Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The question facing America is: who will lead us out of this economic crisis?

George Washington answered this question for us in a letter to Benjamin Harrison in 1784. He wrote: “A people... who are possessed of the spirit of commerce, who see and who will pursue their advantages may achieve almost anything.”

Unfortunately, today, many elected officials, the media, and even big business have lost confidence in “the spirit of commerce” – in the American free enterprise system - and are looking to government for the answer. A recent Newsweek cover declared “We are all Socialists now” and Congress and President Obama just passed a stunningly partisan $787 billion “stimulus” bill. From the TARP to special loans to GM and Chrysler to a new $275 billion mortgage entitlement program, bailout nation is in full swing.

Yet if more government spending could spark sustained economic growth, we'd be in a boom right now from the reckless expansion of spending over the last six years. President Bush nearly doubled the national debt during his two terms, and President Obama is thinking much bigger, proposing $1.4 trillion in new spending programs in just his first month in office. It is possible that the U.S. government's deficit in fiscal year 2010 will be larger than the entire federal budget in 2000.

What's more, the big spending approach to the economy has another nasty side effect that worsens the downturn: uncertainty. The unpredictable and constantly changing rules, political interventions, and vague new government programs only adds to the chaos. The possibility of government bailouts freezes the market, slowing badly needed corrections and adjustments. For example, why should banks sell distressed assets today when Uncle Sam may come in and buy them in the future? And it is never helpful to the confidence of the nation when the President and Treasury Secretary are using words like “economic collapse” and “catastrophe” to scare Congress into passing bailout after bailout.

Even while he embraces this fear-mongering, Washington-first approach, President Obama admits that the current spending binge is not sustainable. That is why it must stop, now. It is time for America to return to its roots and look to entrepreneurs in the private sector to lead us back to prosperity.

Instead of borrowing trillions and sticking the bill to the next generation, America needs to pull itself up by its bootstraps. We need to free businesses from high taxes, runaway lawsuits, and unnecessary regulations so that they can produce more of the goods and services that the world wants to consume. We need to expand our banking sector and develop new forms of lending to replace the gap left by the collapse of securitized lending. We need families to save more of their income to invest in the next generation of American enterprise, and we need a tax code that doesn't punish that savings and investment.

While any downturn is painful and difficult, these economic storm clouds have a benefit. They purge the rot from the system and encourage new ways of doing things. Various frauds are collapsing. Weak businesses in overbuilt sectors of the economy are closing down, leaving more market share for the survivors and freeing up labor and capital to shift to new growth sectors. Lean times drive innovation; necessity, after all, is the mother of invention. The economist Joseph Schumpeter called this process “creative destruction” and this cycle, while difficult, is dynamic and results in an efficient national economy that is poised for growth and a new period of wealth creation. Iconic American companies like Microsoft and Apple were founded during the severe downturn in the 1970s and no doubt new world class firms are being formed at this moment. We just need to get government out of the way and let the entrepreneurs lead.

Capturing this spirit exactly is Robert Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television (and ironically, an Obama supporter), who recently explained the opportunity he senses in the current downturn:

"When you are a serial entrepreneur, you get a lot of ideas. And you want to move on them. If you can get there first, with the right resources, you can create tremendous upside value when other people are sitting on the sidelines. The entrepreneur philosophy is that there's always opportunities out there if you can identify it at the right time, bring in the right strategic resources, whether it's capital or partners, and build a team that knows how to create value.”

Eighty percent of the new jobs in America are created by small businesses doing exactly that: working harder and smarter to create value. America needs to look to its entrepreneurs and innovators, not its politicians and bureaucrats, to solve this crisis. To shift the nation's focus is one reason why FreedomWorks, the non-profit organization I chair, is launching a new online video and essay contest to celebrate America's entrepreneurs. We need to take an overdue look at the ways entrepreneurs in all sectors of our society are improving the quality of our nation's life.

Please join us is this effort to look beyond Washington, D.C., to solve our problems and help America embrace the entrepreneur's moment.

George Bush is not, was not, and never will be a conservative. Why do you think we had to invent new words for him and his followers, neo con, RHINO. These are the globalizationist and there are plenty in the democratic party too.
Any one who follows baseball knew what the Bush business plan was get the public(taxpayers) to pay and the private sector profits. The finiancial crisis was caused by crooks and then the democrats bail them out. and they all got themselves in this mess because they violated the first prinicipal fo the " Gospel of Wealth"
that's a essay written by A Carneige, in which he attempat to distinguish between a captain of industry and a robber barron. Just change to American business and internationl comgolmerant and it is just as relative today. Most favored nation trade status for China, never mind 60 years of anti communist foreign policy and how many wars. But by God we have to keep those big bad Cuban's in their place.I'm so glad that Pres Obama and the demos have taken the millstone of globalization from my neck, now maybe that Obama is carring on the third Bush term we republicans can get back to what made us that in the first place the constitution and principle. besides at the rate democrats are running out of people to fill gov positions, maybe they can promote some of the people out of congressit worked for Hillary. Its for sure they need some help in the protocal dept. DVD's and regifting. i hope all you carbon fearful like having a smart grid tell you when you can use the computer and still have food

Stimulus?
If a stimulus package would work, why hasn't the horrendous Bush spending already save us?

Lawrence
Good riddance, We don't need fair-weather patriots who think of America as little more than a place to make money. Go join your communist buddies in Asia.

Living in the Past
Dick, hate to tell you this, but the world you advocate no longer exists.

If an entrepreneur invents something new in America, the product will be manufactured overseas. In today's world the winners are the inventor and the Chinese who will make the product.

The industrial age that created the wealth of America no longer exists. The old rules of economics you studied don't work any more.

The creativity of the American people is still there. The challenge for the Republicans is to figure out how to turn that creativity into wealth here, not off-shore. No, protectionism is not the answer. No, stimulus packages are not the answer. A new business paradigm is needed - a new Capitalism that gives more people the ability to profit from their creativity is needed. It can be done. Let's recognize the problems with our current Capitalist system and move boldly into the future. Call me. I'll show you how.

Entrepreneurs don't need YOU
Dick - you are right in the you need entrepreneurs BADLY. They create wealth and real jobs (not pencil pushing jobs or McJobs). I am a serial entrepreneur. I have spent 35 years making risking and at times losing large amounts of money. My third venture started with $3M and six people in my basement. Six years later it sold for more than a quarter Billion. I have tried to launch a fourth, but it is no longer possible to do this in America, so I'm pulling up stakes and leaving the U.S. for good, for Asia. I sold ZERO units in the last six months here, and lined up over $1M business in one week in Asia. You are right - you need us, but WE DON'T NEED YOU, or your paternalistic government. I never want to hear the words "compassionate conservative" again. I know many other entrepreneurs and capitalists who are fleeing the U.S. now. Not just their capital - THEY are physically leaving. For good. We are not willing to stay here and be shorn like sheep. It is not possible to fix things from where they have gone. "Hope" you enjoy the "change". Small "change" is all that's going to be left for the government to redistribute. The vote in November was mass political and economic suicide. I'm not staying around to die with you. You politicians did this to the U.S. I hope you are proud of yourselves.

"The Republican party of 2001-2009 refuses to have any accountability."

Quoted for truth!

It's really bad. It seems conservatives cannot point out the shortcomings of the GOP without some people blindly loyal to the GOP (Sean Hannity wannabes) whining in unison about that person "attacking" the Republican Party.

Armey, not Army (sic)
corrected title

Army deserves credit
The only way the Republican party has a chance in the near future (assuming that it does not just disappear like the Federalists and the Whigs) is for Republicans to reject Bush and the Congress that irresponsibly spent money. While Democrats had historically given hand-outs to friends, the Republicans took it to another level with no-bid contracts to companies like Blackwater and with questionable leglislation like the medicare drug bill. Another starting point is for the party to admit that the Iraq war was a great mistake. Things are not better for a lot of people now that Hussein is not in power -- just ask the Iraqi Christian community that has been devistated in the past 6 years (they survived 1500 years, but will likely not survive another 10). The Republican party of 2001-2009 refuses to have any accountability. The party has no chance it they continue to behave like welfare queens who get pregnant with different fathers while asking for money welfare.

Christians and Big Government
Here's a great article by Armey on Christians and big government: http://www.freedomworks.org/publications/christians-and-bi g-government

patches
Dick Armey opposes "big government social conservatism" that seeks to use the power of the federal government to achieve its goals. IMO that is quite wise, as the power we gave the federal government when "we" were in charge is the power that is being used against us now.

Dick Armey is a hero of limited gov't
I recommend everyone here join FreedomWorks, at http://www.freedomworks.org/

Mr Armey
I agree with everything you wrote.

However, you could have helped small business more than almost anybody else (and Bill Archer) by eliminating the tax code as it currently exists while you were in Congress. You had no intention of doing anything to reform the tax code which leads me to believe that this article is nothing more than lip service.

How can you look at a 19,000-page tax code, have the power to change it, but instead, ignore it? And now you champion "freedom"? "Freedom" is the absence of coercion, a far cry from our tax code, is it not Mr. Armey? Your contempt for freedom knows no bounds. You are no fiscal conservative, you are just another back-slapping DC insider.

BTW, I'll be organizing a tea party for a date in April without the help of FreedomWorks. When I found your name as Chairman of FW, I didn't walk from your website, I ran.

Long memory is another trait of pachyderms. This pachyderm will never forget you, Mr Armey. Never.

Huh?
Do any of you people understand who opposed the Contract with America? Do the dim clowns running this country ring a bell? The only way to get the most out of capitalism and entrepreneurship is to hold it accountable for good citizenship and decent use of resources and shut down the bureaucracy. The dims don't believe in any of this and in particular will strangle it out of existance.

SEND IT IN!!!

APRIL 1, EVERYONE MAIL A TEA BAG TO WASHINGTON!

Broken Promises
After the pathetic failure of Dick Armey and his Republican Congress to accomplish the lofty published goals of the “Contract with American,” I wouldn’t trust this man with toilet paper. Our nation has been devoid of leadership for so long, I doubt we’ll recognize it if it ever shows. We vote for promise and change and get the same old irresponsible and selfish spending. NEVER VOTE FOR AN ENCUMBENT!

Small Dick
Not borrowing billions to enjoy life now, families saving to invest for the future , pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps, are all values that grow out of the social conservative movement that Dick Armey abhors.
