Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Afghanistan has been dubbed "Obama's War" but maybe it should be called "the war on civilian casualties."

You may have thought the United States was at war in Afghanistan to "defeat" the Taliban and win one for our loyal ally in counter-jihad, the Afghan people. But even that pipedream is beside the point. The latest concern-turned-obsession of the United States is eliminating as many as possible, if not all, "civilian casualties." If we can only do that, according to brain-trust, top-brass, fairy-tale thinking, we will surely win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people. If we can't, Afghan hearts and minds will go to those globally recognized humanitarians, the Taliban.

Indeed, there is something wrong with this picture. That is, if the Afghan people were really with us, they would be, well, really with us -- not constantly on or past the brink of "alienation." But who wants to admit this? It would necessarily mark the end of the Bush and now Obama Islamic nation-building fantasy that began seven years ago with the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in Operation Infinite Justice. Come to think of it, we hurriedly changed that operation name also for -- guess what? -- fear of alienating Muslims. Tacitly accepting the Islamic position that only Allah dispenses "infinite justice," the U.S. government launched Operation Enduring Freedom and "won" its first battle against Muslim alienation. Chalk one up for dhimmitude.

Now, a new battle against such alienation rages in Afghanistan. "Mullen: Civilian Deaths Hurt US in Afghanistan" reports the Associated Press; "U.S. Envoy Vows to Help Cut Afghan Civilian Deaths," reports the New York Times. The premise of these stories is that it is our own shortcomings, our own failures -- not inculcated Islamic attitudes in the population at large -- that are responsible for Afghan resentment over our nation's continued efforts to defeat the Taliban.

"We cannot succeed in Afghanistan or anywhere else, but let's talk specifically about Afghanistan, by killing Afghan civilians," Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen said recently, practically as if killing Afghan civilians were U.S. policy. He added: "We can't keep going through incidents like this and expect the strategy to work."

By "incidents like this," Mullen was referring to a battle early this month in Afghanistan's Farah province where, according to Afghan government claims, 140-plus civilians were killed during a U.S. aerial bombardment. Even as the U.S. military was still investigating the incident, U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Lt. Gen. Karl W. Eikenberry hightailed it to an Afghan mosque with Afghan president Hamid Karzai to present both U.S. condolences and mea culpas.

According to the New York Times, Karzai, who is seeking re-election, promised to rebuild the villagers' houses, to arrange for some of the survivors to go on the haj pilgrimage to Mecca, and to build schools, clinics and roads in the province. This sounds like your tax dollars at work.

"It is clear to me that if we don't get this right, we do run the risk of alienating the Afghan people and creating what David Kilcullen has called the accidental guerilla," Eikenberry later told the New York Times, referring to the Australian former aide to Gen. David Petraeus, who once infamously claimed that if he were a Muslim, he would be a jihadist out of a shared "sense of adventure." (This, truth be told, alienated me.)

As Eikenberry sees it, it's all our fault. Except that it's not. On Wednesday, Centcom issued interim findings indicating that 60 to 65 Taliban were killed in the engagements in question along with 20 to 30 civilians -- a far cry from 140-plus. Which makes me wonder: Could the ambassador have apologized to imposters in that audience of "survivors"? Perish the alienating thought.

Worth mentioning are some details about the battle itself. According to Centcom, after Taliban fighters beheaded three civilians in an Afghan town, Afghan police and army forces were ambushed en route by 200 to 300 waiting Taliban forces. Two policemen were killed. "Outgunned and outmanned," Centcom reports, "the provincial governor requested help from a coalition quick-reaction force."

At this point, Taliban launched another attack on Afghan and U.S. forces, and "a U.S. Navy corpsman was shot in the shoulder attempting to rescue a wounded Afghan soldier. The coalition force used F-18 close-air support to suppress enemy fire from nearby buildings and allow for the rescue of the wounded Afghan first sergeant, who was trapped by heavy Taliban machine-gun and rocket-propelled-grenade fire." Coordinated by a ground commander, "a B-1 bomber crew fired on enemy firing and gathering positions in buildings and a tree grove. Afghan and U.S. forces remained in the area and observed the villagers returning after the fighting had ceased...."

"We strongly condemn the Taliban for their brutality in deliberately targeting and using human shields," a U.S. military spokesman said. Which is precisely what Mullen and Eikenberry should have said, praising our forces for a job well done. If that "alienates" Afghans, good riddance. But meanwhile, an apology is owed here -- to the U.S. military.

WHO CARES ABOUTR "CIVILIANS?"
When are we gonna take off the handcuffs and get the Napalm out. There no good civilians over there, just a bunch of towel heads who would be better off dead. Of course O bambi wants us to die so he can get his 72 virgins. Not so secret Muslim in charge of a CHRISTIAN nation? Thanks a lot God, Where are you- laughing at your cruel joke on this country? Ready for some Rapture. If not now, WHEN?!?!

Dear Ms. West,
Seems to me you have ripped Obama, Petraeus, brain trust top brass, Lt. Gen. Karl W. Eikenberry and Adm Mullen.

Pandering to Muslims
Its about time somebody calls it like it is. There are a handful of vocal American Muslims and of course the ones fighting in our forces that are denouncing radical Islam. Let me reiterate the Bush Doctrine that even Bush got gunshy over after nine years of bashing (Oblaba is still invoking Bush today to cover up his ineptness supported by his pmm [Propaganda Media Machine aka msm] cronies). If you are supporting terrorists (crying civilian when all these creeps hide behind skirts and kids) then you will be considered a terrorist. Iran, Iraq, Taliban, Syria openly support terrorists. What is so hard about this? Eradicate them until they're gone. I guarantee there will be no more moderates and no skirts or kids will be around the sub-species when the shooting starts.

Is Mullen a "Liver"al?
I think our military has tried very hard NOT to kill civilians. They are the best soldiers in the world! Where is this Mullen and all, bleeding heart drool coming from? Ohbooboo?

Should we just take every soldier's weapons and send them out with brooms? Perhaps they can just sweep the Taliban out of Afghanistan. Wait, be extra careful not to hurt the murderers or get a broom straw in their eyes. Let's get something straight. They are the cowards that hide behind women and children and DO NOT care if innocents die---NOT US!!

Don't second guess the guys on the ground. They are the front line that must do the hard fighting in this war. And give them the props they deserve. Not some crappy spiel about winning hearts and minds. Is Mullen going to run for president? What freaking insanity!

Time to Withdraw
We are in a war we can not win. Today, we face countries steeped in poverty with their governments only prevailing in the large cities, where their graft and corruption prevent any change to the outlying populace. Those struggling to survive are caught between a unified insurgent force and a lack of government security. Insurgent forces live off the land by taking what they want when they want it. We have no real support from a world willing to sit back and watch us condemn ourselves.
If you ever watched the movie, "The Magnificent Seven," you'll see the difficulty of the situation and there will be no Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson coming to your aid. The outlying population has little, if any, contact with the central government. Never has, never will, most likely. Civilian casualties will always occur in war and their front-page reporting never occurs from within, only from without, by western journalists eager to point to the dificiencies of war. We have been in Afghanistan long enough with little gain. Withdraw, let the Taliban reassume command and then carpet bomb them back to Allah.

Interesting question
Obviously it is ridiculous to think that the Afghans are affected by civilian casualties. After all when Americans are killed we all smile and say that's life stuff happens and harbor no ill will against the people who killed them.

Or alternately we sometimes launch wars on unrelated people killing 10s or 100s of thousands of people in the name of the Americans killed.

But if Afghans resent the killing of their civilians over a period of 7 years it has to be that they are unreasonable fanatics whose lives are irrelevant.

Which is more insane, what West writes, or that people actually don't find it crazy here.

If we want to restate . . .
our position in the world, it is time to "take the gloves off".
We should put the world on notice that ANY attack on the United States or its citizens will result in the total destruction of a city in the offending country and then MAKE GOOD on the "promise". After medina or another muslim city got "vaporized", any "muslim" that talked about attacking the United States would be summarily killed by his own people.
Of course, obama (the muslim) would never go along with such a plan.

Big Tim
It is obvious to me you've not been to Southwest Asia, much less Afghanistan. There are millions of potentially useful civilians in the Rock Garden.

They are called children.

Don't forget
that in Vietnam we were told that we only bombed churches and children’s hospitals.
The power of propaganda and selective reporting can be impossible to overcome. For example, during the Tet offensive the Viet Cong massacred five thousand people in Hue including teachers and nuns. Nary a peep of protest was heard. But when General Loan publicly executed a guerilla leader who had used women and children as hostages, the American public was horrified.
The same thing is happening today. Unseemly enemy activities are overlooked, while ours are grossly exaggerated.

The littlest Soldiers
My heart was broken and at the same time, I was infuriated when I found out that their children were being taught by a cartoon/puppet similar to Mickey Mouse, that killing and dying were good things...
We don't recruit our children into our wars. No matter what the Rabid Liberals may say, we don't.
A child that has been planted with the seeds of hate and the path of death is broken, and can never be repaired so long as that voice is still whispering in their ears... Unfortunately, as long as there is a single radical left over there, they aren't just whispering... They are screaming in their ears...
Hate.
Murder.
Hate.
Murder.
Sometimes, the only option is the brutal surgery of war to cut away the cancer down to it's smallest roots.
May God have Mercy on their Souls.

Loon
You have got to be one of the most idiotic posters on TH, not to mention a pathetic excuse for a human being! In fact, if I knew where you lived, I'd personally come to PA and kick your sorry, worthless butt!

Who smiles when Americans are killed and says that's the way it is? I mean, besides you?

Obviously, you never served in the military and apparently, don't have any relatives that ever did, either that, or you just ignore the sacrifices that have been made by free men everywhere, when Americans have died. You certainly haven't ever made any!

Why--
Should We worry about the well-being of Tribsmen, who clean their behinds with their left hand after answering Natures Call??[then "clean" their hands with sand, Or Not] These people would cut an American's throat, for Lunch Money!! They have been at war with Someone, since Recorded Time. It's not Ever going to Stop. As for the Libs, they don't give a Rat'z Patoot about any MOSLEMS. They just want to beat the Conservatives on the head with Any thing they can!

Civilian
I am a Vietnam veteran. My daughter is an Afghanistan veteran. In such areas, the enemy does not wear uniforms, does not fight according to accepted rules of warfare, and does not represent a recognized government. The enemy kills and maims far more of their fellow Moslem civilians than they kill of us infidels. The danger of mines and booby traps left by the Taliban and Al Qaeda is so great that no one may leave Qandahar base unless on official combat missions. The "innocent civilians" provide food, shelter, support, and their own children as recruits for the jihadist movement. In fundamentalist Islam, those who actually are innocent non-combatants rarely live for very long.

James
from one VietNam vet to another, welcome home, bro!

I'm sure that you were like me in hoping that by our sacrifices, no one else would have to go to war again. My dad was in Korea and he told me that he felt that way, too. Unfortunately, there are too many people in the world that will not let that happen.

Tell your daughter that I am proud of her!

Big Jam #1
My preferred tactic for taking over Fallujah was to allow non-combatants to leave, fly away the MSM, and cover Fallujah with napalm.

Bruce #12: The answer to your question is Liberal Democ-rats.

The Good News.......
"By 'incidents like this,' Mullen was referring to a battle early this month in Afghanistan's Farah province where, according to Afghan government claims, 140-plus civilians were killed during a U.S. aerial bombardment."

The current estimates are 30 to 40 civilians and up to 65 Taliban. It was clear to on scene commanders that civilians were killed. The desire of the media to undermine the mission in Afghanistan was blunted by quick contrition on the subject.

The Good News.......
Civilians were killed in Farah.

http://badnewsbarnes666.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/u-s-forces -killed-civilians-in-farah/

So apologies were made.

The Bad News: In accordance with the rules of "proportionality" it is the portion of reality that the MSM (Marxist Stalinist Media) leaves out that sells news. You don't honestly believe that a headline like "200 to 300 Taliban Driven From Farah", sub head "Taliban Executed Three, Human Shields Die" would be a bigger seller than "140 Die In U.S. Air Strike".

Wars and rumors of wars
I am not a liberal peace-nik and I daily pray for the military, but does anyone out there ever just get tired of war? So I apologize to our brave men and women not for the job you are doing, but for the stupid politicians who wind up sending you into some God forsaken country that has fought bloody wars almost from the Time of Genesis.
As a Christian I believe in a STRONG defense, but I'm coming to the point of I'd rather have you with all the weapons encamped around the shores of America and when the dirty rotten skunks come to our shores blow them into eternity. That way you would not be accused of killing "so called" innocent civilians. However, then the MSM would have nothing to report would it?

Bruce-MN
Regarding Ur response to "Loon".. I'm sorry to say U would be wasting both Ur time and trip..The referenced individual can and does take either side of a given situation that he/she concludes will elicit argument..
I have chosen to totally ignore said person.. the last comment I made regarding things I should have ignored (personal) about this person was apparently flagged/deleted..I'm retired Military (Korea/Vietnam eras) and have some pretty strong feelings about both the Military people who defend this Country and my Country PERIOD!! Confront this jerk if U wish; many of us choose to ignore the source..CHEERS

excellent point Barnes

So true, yet I would expect the former to be a bigger seller. I guess I'm not filled with hatred for the USA. I suppose I'm banned from The Party forever.

I didn't like the idea I got that more than half of the terorrists got away. I would have preferred ALL DEAD.
In fact I expect it.
Come on USA, time to kill them all, nothing else can be done.
