Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I have seen the future of conservatism and ... he is a hedge fund manager.

I refer to hedge fund manager Clifford S. Asness, and I'm only halfway kidding. Or maybe I'm not kidding at all. The fact is, Asness this week launched the single most lucid and inspiring counter-attack against the Obama administration's brazen assault on capitalism as seen in its Chrysler bankruptcy shakedown.

Basically, the White House Chrysler plan picks economic losers and winners according to a naked political calculation that penalizes bondholders and rewards the union bosses of the United Auto Workers. It's that simple, that appalling, and that anti-capitalist. The hedge funds, seeking not to surrender the protections afforded their investors by the bankruptcy court process, quite naturally balked at the Obama administration's blatant power grab on behalf of what amount to union cronies. As Asness explained, "Some bondholders thought (the White House plan was) unfair. Specifically, they thought it unfairly favored the United Auto Workers. ... So, they said no to the plan and decided, as is their right, to take their chances in the bankruptcy process."

Their "right"?

Hah. With a remarked-upon display of anger, President Obama publicly castigated bondholders for opposing his plan, deriding them as "speculators" who refused "to sacrifice like everyone else," and who only opposed the White House deal to "hold out for the prospect of an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout."

It was after this that Asness penned what stands as the first post-Obama capitalist manifesto, now making the rounds on the Internet.

"I am indeed fearful writing this. It's a really bad idea to speak out," Asness admits in a preamble that reads like a bulletin from capitalism's trenches where white-shoe comrades, as Asness writes, remain "anonymous for fear of going on the record against a powerful president." Possibly, Asness was also thinking about bankruptcy lawyer Tom Lauria's recent charges that the White House had pressured the firm Perella Weinberg to "withdraw its opposition to the (White House) deal under threat that the full force of the White House press corps would destroy its reputation if it continued to fight." (The White House denies the charge; Perella Weinberg says economic considerations compelled it withdraw its opposition.)

Asness, whose $20 billion company AQR Capital Management is not involved in the Chrysler mess, went on to describe the bankruptcy process ("the rules of the game lenders know before they lend") which the president's plan upends, along with the fiduciary obligation money managers have to manage their clients' money apolitically. Then he gets to his bottom line: "The President's attempted diktat takes money from bondholders and gives it to a labor union that delivers money and votes for him. Why is he not calling on his party to 'sacrifice' some campaign contributions, and votes, for the greater good? Shaking down lenders for the benefit of political donors is recycled corruption and abuse of power."

I don't know who Asness is aside from being a highly successful hedge fund manager -- an occupation for which I don't even know how to pack a briefcase. But he is speaking truth to power, which is exactly what the American people need to hear. "The President screaming that the hedge funds are looking for an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout is the big lie writ large," he writes. "Find me a hedge fund that has been bailed out. Find me a hedge fund, even a failed one, that has asked for one. In fact, it was only because hedge funds have not taken government funds that they could stand up to this bullying. ... The President's comments here are backwards and libelous. Yet somehow I don't think the hedge funds will be following ACORN's lead and trucking in a bunch of paid professional protestors soon. Hedge funds really need a community organizer."

Contrast this fiery defense of capitalism -- the latest cause of the "culture war," according to Arthur Brooks, the new head of the American Enterprise Institute -- with the gag-inducing mush almost simultaneously offered by Jeb Bush, Eric Cantor and Mitt Romney during a political event during which, as the Washington Post noted, these proto-presidential hopefuls "did not directly attack President Obama, rarely used the word 'Republican,' and engaged in a healthy dose of self-criticism."

"You can't beat something with nothing," burbled former-presidential brother Jeb Bush during this GOP-lite squish-o-rama. "And the other side has something. I don't like it, but they have it, and we have to be respectful and mindful of that."

The "other side" has something, all right -- possession of the economy, which is nothing to "respect." It is something to oppose.

As Asness does. "This is America," Asness concludes. "We have a free-enterprise system that has worked spectacularly for us for 200-plus years. When it fails it fixes itself. Most importantly, it is not an owned lackey of the Oval Office to be scolded for disobedience by the President."

Could there be a pulse in the body politic? Be still, my political heart. This is the vital spirit of rebellion that just might lead conservatives to declare: Hedge Fund Man for President.

Way to go Clifford!
At last someone is willing to stand against the onslaught of our would be dictator and say no more. Capitalism has freed more people than communism, socialism and progressivism have destroyed. Our newly elected president is willing and able without disregard to destroy this country which is the beacon for peace and economic freedom in the world. In any crisis around the world America has always stepped forward with support and donations which have been provided by capitalism and the spirit of its people. Are we willing to extinguish the statue of Liberty's light for "Hope and Change" Change can mean towards a better future or a road backwards where only the old can remember that America was once a shining light. Peter Scott

As always
As always Diana,a great article that goes to the heart of the matter. The more the Obama team protests its truthfulness the faster we should count the silver left on the table.

Hedge Fund Man is Right
The letter by Asness came to my attention the other day in the highly informative and readable economics blog done by Roberts and Boudreaux from GMU. They link to the full letter's text.

It is indeed a brave and wonderful service that Asness provides in the open letter to an overreaching federal government. Diane West highlights many of the most important and inspiring sections of Mr. Asness's comments, but does not give the final line which is both funny and poignant. Mr. Asness references the congressional and presidential audacity on the AIG bonuses by saying, "I am ready for my 'personalized' tax rate now."

During the election run up, I thought I was truly losing my mind. I had continued thoughts of, "I think it is time to buy weapons and lots of ammo, because there will be a reckoning if Obama is elected." I consoled myself by saying that the founders had constructed a document that served us well for over two centuries and it would put the brakes on these yahoos. I seem to have forgotten that Obama (and his water carriers Reid and Pelosi) don't give a tinker's damn about the content and clear meaning of that document. I believe that a reckoning is coming and that I am not losing (and haven't lost) my mind.

If another "American revolution is

necessary, it does not have to be a war conducted between opposing armies.

It will only take independent groups of about 20 people per state. If there is more than one independent group of 20 per state, all the better, so long as they implement the same strategy. Having independent groups exercising the same strategy will ensure that the identification and capture of one group will not stop the revolution.

The strategy should be execution, by sniper fire, of all elected federal office holders, all appointed federal judges and justices, and of all high ranking (assistant secretaries and above)appointed federal officials.

The combined efforts of a number of independent organizations using the same strategy (sniper executions) would be impossible to stop. This strategy's end result would be a surrender by whatever federal officials remain alive. It would also prevent massive casualties on both sides.

I am not advocating revolution. I am just theorizing about the best way to go about it if it becomes necessary.

I agree with the above poster who said violent revolution should not occur unless the federal government becomes violent against its law-abiding citizens. Imprisoning people for exercising their right of free speech (among other things) would constitute violence against citzens.

Rich
Exactly! I sat there during the election cycle, watching the numbers move toward Obama while listening to his words, finding out about his actual "accomplishments", meeting some of the "friends" he kept, and seeing the media cover for the man over every issue. (Even now the most atocious economic data are given with the most amazing positive spin Bush would have died for. I won't even mention the halo pictures I keep seeing either.)

I couldn't believe so many were taken by this guy who had done so little, stands for nothing but self-promotion, and has never been good at anything--except self-promotion.

I knew we were in for some sort of national castigation even then, because you can't shoot yourself in the foot and suffer no consequences. Well, we got what we wanted: Hope, Change, and a whole lot more.

Hedge Fund Man For President
Its getting to the point where democrats should start drinking their cool-aid. They are still in denial about who Barack Obama is. He is a stooge for the unions, bought and paid for by the unions. He's against school choice, why, unions, he's against bankruptcy court, why, unions. The man is a dictator. Firing CEO's and making up his own bankrupptcy laws. Clifford S. Asness has Obama pegged right. Now that his letter is out I want to see if someone at the white house daily briefing has the guts to ask Obama's lap dog about it. At this rate in four years we'll be like Cuba.

That's who I want...
in charge of my retirement investments! Someone who will acknowledge he has a fiduciary duty to me, not to a corrupt administration. He sounds like a true American capitalist -- my kind of guy!

Welcome to Obamaland!
Eddie (#4): I understand your anger, but please keep your "theorizing" to yourself, and off of this forum. What are trying to do, get this site shut down? Too many people, i.e. DHS Secretary Napolitano for example, plus who knows how many of her employees, already think conservatives are fringe nutjobs looking for an excuse to undertake violence. Posts like yours do the conservative movement no favors, and you might wind up answering the door to some guys with FBI badges if you aren't careful. Just my $0.2 worth. By the way, I think DHS should be abolished, and never should have been formed in the first place. Far as the "Commisar-in-Chief" goes, I wouldn't have voted for him if he was the last candidate on Earth.

About the article: Well, as a conservative trapped in Obama country, all I can say to all of you is "Ain't Chicago-style politics grand??" My God, the number of times I yelled at the TV set watching Obama speak, worried about him winning and now it has come to pass.

Is it too soon to begin impeachment hearings?

Eddie Too??
Can someone explain to me how a poster (Eddie from NE) who actively advocates assassinations of politicians and officials who are guaranteed their offices by law, the Constitution, and the People is not removed from this site?? I have already reported him to Town Hall, yet a day later it is still up.

This site is ridiculous!! He should be banned for that kind of nonsense!!

Another Republican Revolution
We had to have a Jimmy Carter to get a Ronald Reagan. Barry will be a one-termer who will pave the way for the light of conservatism. Don't worry, there will be someone to take the mantle - perhaps it is hedge fund man. It sure as he** isn't J Bush, Cantor, or the like.

GeorgiaBoy
4:13 post..Thank you for admonishing Eddie, I have cringed at his posts.
Talking about that kind of violence doesn't do
anyone any good, it just feeds the progressive
bigots.
And I happen to believe what we are enduring,
experiencing whatever you call it is because God is allowing evil men (and women) to have their way in this land because the American people have turned away from Him. 67% of the voting public chose death in the person of Obama
and rejected life as personified by SARAH. They
chose to over look his blood thirsty support of
torture and execution of the most innocent of our citizens the preborn and surviving babies of abortion for their own selfish desires.
We are under His judgement and will be until
things get so bad the people once again turn
to Him and repent of their wicked ways.
So Eddie, cool it, God has it under control, He alone raises and deposes rulers.

Diana
You found your John Galt.

Jimbo, The halo pics are weird. Have a few catalogued. The most eary of them all... election night, Grant Park. The way the crowd had a moment of wtf, but then snapped out of it. The black widow dress....anything but hope.

Eddie needs to go. That language is not fit no matter how you feel.

I like 'diktat' and I like Asness

Diktat comes from German, from Latin dictatum, neuter past participle of dictare, "to dictate." It is related to dictator.

Diktat really sums up Obama's relationship with the rest of the Constitutional America, now doesn't it. Obama & Chavez - what a pair.

I think we all want to know - where IS the political outrage against Obama??? We have to rely on people like Glenn Beck and Clifford Asness to publicly tell it like it is? Obama lies to us and steals from us continually - and the GOP remains silent? WTH?

No wonder the Republican Party is losing in the public consciousness - the party has no cojones and just doesn't call it like it is. They apparently have no leaders.

In all times, we need strong leaders to help us uphold the Constitution and defeat tyranny here and abroad. Right now we are a divided people and are witnessing the disassembly of our country. How tragic.

Maybe Asness SHOULD consider politics. After all, he has our attention, and he certainly has shown us he knows how to succeed in his own work efforts - we just need to change his job description.

And, Asness clearly isn't afraid of 'His Holiness' Massah Obama and the Obama gang of 40 thieves. Great chutzpah (i.e. guts)!

If we had more clear thinkers and fearless conservative speakers in the GOP, I would have no reason to be so unhappy with the wimpy Republicans for letting down lawful America when we need them the most.

No more Mr. Nice Guy - this is war - a war for the hearts and minds of the mainstream American spirit. Screw the un-American progressives and their gaggle of on-the-dole slaves!

God Bless Constitutional America and our great American Spirit!

Even politeness can be taken to an
extreme. The Bush family has good manners. But Common Sense and the future of my children must come before respecting the wrongful and evil opposition.

With Bush,McCain in that group they have no intention of listening. They will lecture every one, because they are rino's they know best. What a bunch of losers

Banana Republic on it's way
Being a South African, two comments resonate with me as we struggle to maintain some international dignity in the face of a growing decline to banana republic status.

1) Only banana republics have presidents who almost by decree change the rules of the game whenever they feel like it. We see it with Pres. Zuma and now we start to see it in the USA with Pres. Obama.

2) Quote: "...not an owned lackey of the Oval Office to be scolded for disobedience by the President." This type of behaviour amounts to an absolute fashion statement in despotic governments all over Africa. You can't govern a banana republic if you don't scold the recalcitrant. It has become popular amongst the ANC elite in South Africa and Obama seems to be joining the craze on that side of the Atlantic.

USA, welcome to the road to banana republic status. South Africa is a little further down the road than the USA, so we know the warning signs.

Thugocracy
Posted this right after the election:
Thugocracy based on the Commie Model. We the people have a lot to look forward to: 1) Ideology that is completely at odds with the intentions of the Fore Fathers, 2) Carefully concealed deployment of the socialistic agenda that will be rife with corruption and deceit, 3) The systemic dismantling of institutions, not necessarily in name but in the core reasons for their existence, so as to serve this ideology, 4) A rapid decline from super power status to a large banana-obama republic with Castro-like ideology driving its mediocre accomplishments, 5) Social upheaval with high risk for violence, 6) A stagnant economy or worse, and 7) National Security problems up the wazoo.

Creeping Fascism
"Another Republican Revolution

I doubt that can happen again. Between ACORN and corrupt election officers, I believe fair elections are a thing of the past.

When the white house and ACORN get done with the next census I'm afraid its all over.

The new hate/thought crime bill just passed by congress allows them to target anyone.

Their next step is to shut down TV & Radio stations that oppose his plans.

Agree with hedge fund man
but I think there is a problem, in that capital needs markets in order to be employed efficiently, but it seems too often market traders are being rewarded, and not capital. Hedge funds seem to emphasize trading profits, and not the profits from using capital itself. The compensation plans for the hedge fund managers seem to promote speculation rather than efficiency.

While we need traders to create the markets capital operates in, we don't necessarily need traders dreaming up ever more complex devices such as credit default swaps which don't seem to add real value.

Of course, all this seems lost on Obama, who appears to be a believer in the Marxist "labor theory of value" which says capital contributes nothing, but the cost of capital is a "tax" on labor and immoral.

Others will follow
The Hedge Fund Man is one voice, but his is a powerful voice, and he represents an advancement in the developing resistance.

Soros is a hedgefund manager
Soros is a hedgefund manager
and he gave a bad name to all hedgefunds. Apparently there hedgefunds that can have a "good crisis" during the Obama administration, and hedgefunds that must be vilified in that same administration. That comes hand-in-hand with some having more rights than others. Are some of you still surprised?

Cliff Asness
Cliff Asness has decided to break rank despite of people in the financial industry have been keeping mum lately. Cliff Asness, from AQR Capital, let President Obama have it, after the chief executive announced his discontentment of how hedge funds were held back from investing in Chryller LLC and with their restructing deal, while their bankruptcy negotiations were ongoing. According to Asness, the hedge funds manager has the responsibility to their clients, and granting debt relief to a company in bankruptcy isn’t among them. Which means, that he doesn’t have to invest nor participate in any deal he doesn’t think will make his clients money, and keep clients out of wanting short term loans is what Cliff Asness does for a living.
