Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

That was some confirmation hearing for madame secretary of State this week. One for the annals. Not so much for what Hillary Clinton said (boilerplate stuff) but for what the Senate Foreign Relations Committee did. The senators showed up to examine, at least, the many red flags popping up between Bill Clinton's ongoing global charitable foundation and Hillary Clinton's upcoming global diplomatic portfolio, but they stayed on to gawk and burble. On Thursday, the committee voted 16-to-1 to give the lady a big, fat stamp of approval.

But sometimes inexplicably: "The (William J.) Clinton Foundation exists as a temptation for any foreign entity or government that believes it could curry favor through a donation," cautioned Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana. "It also sets up potential perception problems with any action taken by the secretary of state in relation to foreign givers or their countries...." Therefore, he concluded, in a sharp reversal of his own logic, "I believe that every member of this committee will seek ways to support Senator Clinton's work as secretary of state." Huh?

And sometimes with hearts and flowers: "I truly appreciate all that you are poised to do and what you have done in the past," Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska told Mrs. Clinton.

Or with an awkward turn of phrase: "Despite the news accounts that say that I'm the one that's going to ask you the hard questions about potential conflicts of interest, I have no questions about your integrity," said Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. And none about the Clinton foundation. Weirdly, DeMint then appealed to Mrs. Clinton "to do whatever is necessary to silence any critics before you take office."

Whatever is necessary? That'll give a turn to old Clinton hands who still can't shake the image of Webb Hubbell rolling "over one more time," or of Kathleen Willey's poor cat. "Enough said," said DeMint. Maybe too much.

"I'm just a junior senator from Tennessee, but it seems to me that everything has a season and this is your season," Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee told Mrs. C., splashing the Senate hearing room with chicken soup for the soul. "It just seems to me there's no reason whatsoever to have continual press comments and other kinds of things that might take away from, I think, what might be extraordinary efforts on your part."

Such was the loyal Republican "opposition."

"I believe that the better your diplomacy, the better your ability to defend yourself," Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia, another Republican, explained to Mrs. Clinton. "A strong military is a great foundation for good diplomacy. And then if you add the development, which I think is "soft power" or "smart power," you have a great trilogy. Do you agree with that?"

Penetrating question.

"Senator Isakson, I couldn't say it any better," said Mrs. Clinton. "I certainly do agree."

All of which goes to show this confirmation hearing wasn't exactly a trial by fire -- unless, of course, "fire" means the kind of "fire" Mrs. Clinton said targeted her 1996 airport arrival into Bosnia -- i.e., nonexistent fire.

But, as Corker put it, there's no reason for "continual press comments." Why bring up the millions of dollars bubbling out of the Middle East and into the Clinton foundation from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Dubai and the United Arab Emirates? No Arab sheikh will give any of that moolah a thought when Secretary of State Clinton comes to call, right?

And just forget about the millions passing into the foundation coffers from, say, Lebanese-Canadian businessman Victor Dahdaleh, now facing a U.S. federal investigation into charges that he helped defraud a Bahrain-government controlled metals company -- Bahrain being home of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet. And never mind the donations of Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese-Nigerian businessman closely tied to former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha. Chagoury, as the Wall Street Journal reported, has donated millions to the Clinton foundation. He also donated to Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign -- later helping to arrange a hefty speaking fee for the former president -- while members of his family donated thousands of dollars to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Just because this Clintonian sugar daddy has large oil interests in Nigeria, not to mention close ties to Lebanonese religious factions, let there be no "continual press comments" about these and other conflicts of! interest. As DeMint put it, "Enough said."

But Senate gag aside, these colossal conflicts of interest Mrs. Clinton carries with her to the State Department won't go away.

Kudos to Sen. David Vitter, Republican of Louisiana, who voted against Mrs. Clinton's nomination due to conflicts posed by her husband's globe-spanning charities. And at least he asked whether and how donations to the Clinton Global Initiative, a breakaway arm of the Clinton foundation not covered by the agreement worked out between the Obama team and the Clinton foundation, will be monitored. In his final allotted moments, he even mentioned extremely troubling donations to the Clinton foundation from Iran-linked terror-tainted interests. But to no avail.

The situation was "unprecedented," said Lugar at hearing's end, adding: "I am hopeful that, as we go through the history of this, that people will not say, well, Senator Lugar, Senator Kerry and others were pressing it. They saw the problems. And we'll get full credit, but that will not be helpful to our foreign policy, to you, to your husband, to the foundation."

Full credit, senator? Full blame, I'd say.

Cordon Sanitaire?
Or, Cheesecloth walls.

It's up to the Clinton's now.

More bitter aftertaste or a strict adherence to the "Chinese walls" every law school student learns of by the second year.

Forget the Devil and Daniel Webster; we've the Secretary and Mr. Creosote.

These
Republican Senators are gas bags, they don't have an ethical bone in their rancid bodies.
They have an extraordinary talent for brown nosing. So much for their oaths, it seems this
exclusive club is more interested in schmoozing with their own than protecting the country.
(There are so few honest Senators it's enough to make you give up.) There are only a couple of Republicans I'd trust to be Americans before anything else. They still don't get it, that there are millions of us in the grass roots watching and keeping score and the fate of the GOP as a viable party is in the balance. If
they continue to buy job insurance over integrity, they may end up outside looking in if a strong third party emerges out of this debacle.

Reply to Tea Party....
Great post on your part! There has to be a credible third party arise from the ashes.....there's really no more alternative. I really believe that the American people have FINALLY caught on to the B.S. that the Repubs are pulling.....I honestly believe the GOP is ALREADY finished as a viable party...(and good riddance)

Tea Party
After seeing and hearing about the groveling this week, I would have to agree with you that there are NO LEGITIMATE Republicans (save maybe Vitter) in the "House of Lords." If anyone needs to really understand why the country went blue in 2006 and 2008, we only need to look at the behavior of this group of pseudo-Democrats whose definition of integrity is singular.

Our Bright Future
I either read or saw on some TV show that in American prisons, punks are made to walk along side their masters and hold the masters' belts which denotes them as bytches, wives of their dominators. It's a mark of shame for the punks.

This idea has merit in our congress. Pelosi should order that no GOP guy is allowed outside his office without being escorted by a democrat, and that the GOP guy has to hold the democrat's belt. She should also make GOP "men" wear sundresses and high heels to clearly show they have no masculinity or honor at all.

Now McCain's odd behaviour during his campaign makes sense. Elected GOP "males" are eunuchs, deballed geldings, supine, jellyfish punks. It's why they're all old and dried up, unable to stand erect, always on their knees, always beginning every sentence with an apology.

Conservatives in America have no choice at the present time other than to prepare themselves for the coming disaster. We have no leadership, so everyone is on their own. Only when we go through the severe economic collapse, the resulting civil disorder and chaos, then tyranny and oppression, will we then have the motivation to rebuild.

But first, there will have to be a civil war with them, the others - the communists, the freeloaders and looters and the ruling criminal element now in power. This chain of events must always take place in a failing empire before freedom reigns again.

This sounds absurd to most today because they delude themselves believing their Messiah will lead us into the promised land.

But when it's revealed that he is merely a mortal and when we finally are confronted with what the thieves in congress have done to us, then the fun starts.

Then we will have the motivation to do what needs to be done.

This is an interesting dynamic

Liberal Democrats in the Senate want her out of the senate because she steals the spotlight from them.

Conservatives want her in the State Department because they know she will undermine Obama for her own Presidential desires.

SMART POWER VS DUMB POWER
Is Hillary Clinton's "smart power" the intelligent force that we saw in action during the 1990s when bin Ladin's contempt for America was such that he called us a "paper tiger" who could easily be defeated, then proceeded to attack us worldwide culminating in the destruction of the Twin Towers? Is this the "smart power" Hillary was talking about?

Funny, but I don't recall bin Ladin calling America a "paper tiger" during the dumb power years of George W. Bush. I hear that Bush's years were so abysmally dumb that he had bin Ladin pooing in his pants thinking that he was dealing with a mad man. For who but a mad man would follow the invasion of Afghanistan with Operation Iraqi Freedom to topple Saddam Hussein? Who but a mad man would redouble his efforts in Iraq when the country was going to hell? Who but a madman has no regrets for his time in office hunting down and killing al Qaida thugs by the thousands and letting Israel decimate Lebanon and Gaza?

On January 20th Osama Bin Ladin will heave a sigh of relief as mad man Bush, Al Qaida's holy terror, is replaced by a soft gentle passive man who'd rather be a domestic president than a war time leader; a 60s born antiwar leftist who thinks global warming is a greater threat to U.S. security than global terrorism and that jihadists should be treated as common criminals. When Barack Hussein Obama is sworn in as President and the era of dumb George is at an end Bin Ladin will be giving thanks to God and joining the celebration as he unsheathes his deadly sword.

How embarrassing...

End quote.

I hang my head in shame...Demint just fell in lockstep with the rinos...what a disappointment!

Hilary Clinton with integrity?!

That's like oil and water...they don't mix!

Clinton's approval

One republican had the courage to vote against Clinton. The others, as is their way and has been their way follow the democrats.
Already we are seeing the Republicans walk in lock step with the Democrats because they are truly liberal. The Republicans continue to show how spineless they are and exhibit a fear known only to cowards.

Warning!!!
to Obama -- get a food taster.

Wolf Pack
Those who treated Hillary with such gentlemanly courtesy have shown extreme cowardice and are only there to keep their jobs. Real examination of the conflicts of interest involving her hubby's foundation were with one exception completely ignored. If this is responsible government, then there is little to feel good about. The wolf pack always knows and submits their necks to the dominant wolves.

Get your handy dandy Obama INAUGURATION FLAIL before they are sold out! BEAT YOURSELF INTO SUBMISSION. Salesmen made a killing in the GOP!!!!

I have never seen such cowardice from so many who were elected to uphold the constitution and to serve "we, the people!"
No conscience? No problem!!!!!

16-1
looks like there was one FBI file that her highness didn't have. what a travesty. integrity my a##,a 5th grade civics class would have come up with tougher questions. they should be ashamed.

Cowards watch out for switch
Clinton and Obama could be using the hearings for Secretary of State as a springboard to the United States Supreme Court. Look at all the details vetting by Obama brought out about all of his nominees. The Clinton nomination brought no unknown details.

Tea Party @ 7:26 pm yesterday
You can write my two senators off. I have not heard much about the junior senator's associations, but the senior senator's actions are a perfect illustration of "bad communications corrupt good manners"--witness his longstanding association with the Drowner of Chappaquiddick.
