Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

THE SWISS ALPS, SWITZERLAND -- "Explain the minaret ban," I asked.

I was sitting in the side room of a house, overlooking a flat plot somewhat larger than the trampoline outside. Beyond that trampoline, still visible in the evening light, rose the Swiss Alps. Across the table, Oskar Freysinger sat poised to address my query over some cups of espresso, speaking as a local leader of the Swiss People's Party.

Or perhaps I should say -- a local leader of the "extremist," "bigoted" and "xenophobic" Swiss People's Party. That's how this largest political party in tiny Switzerland is routinely discussed, or, rather, dismissed by elites, glitterati and other social deadweights.

Why? Because the Swiss People's Party is, with noticeable success, fighting to bring massive immigration, including Islamic immigration, under control in Switzerland before this rigidly neutral, quite independent, non-European Union country loses its uniquely Swiss character. (Hardly unimaginable given that 21.1 percent of Swiss residents are foreign.) This makes men like Freysinger a dire threat to the multicultural world order. Hence the very nasty, but meaningless names.

Now engaged in probably its greatest battle yet, the Swiss People's Party has just amassed more than the requisite 100,000 signatures on a petition to trigger a national referendum, in this controversial case, on whether Switzerland should ban minarets, the towers that often soar high enough over mosques to transform the skyline of any cathedral town in Europe. Out of 90 mosques in Switzerland, only two have minarets. Three more are now in political limbo.

"We have long reflected on this," said Freysinger, 48, a strongly built man whose intelligent face, long, dark pony tail and summer sandals confound the Tyrolean-capped, alpine stereotype. A high school teacher of German literature, he is bilingual in German and French, and plenty serviceable in both Italian and English, the latter being our interview lingo.

Discussing the "long progression" of Islam -- now 4.3 percent of Switzerland's mainly Christian population of 7.5 million -- into Swiss life, he explains that what concerns him is "not the (Islamic) religion, but the law," meaning Islamic law, or Sharia. And while there is religious freedom in Switzerland for new mosques, this same freedom does not extend to minarets, which he sees as political more than religious symbols. "Minarets are not necessary for the practice" of Islam, he explains.

Indeed, historically, the minaret has often served as a sign of Islamic political power. In our own era, it may be seen to symbolize the introduction of Islamic law into formerly non-Islamic societies.

"In that case," Freysinger continued, "we said: `OK. We'll attack the symbol. It's always about symbols because symbols have a big truth behind them. And so we attack this symbol of conquering Islam and we say: You are welcome in our country, but there is one law, and one constitution for every person in this country. And there is no special law for an Islamic girl, or an Islamic man. There is no Sharia. Nothing."

Given the premodern inequities of Sharia, the notion of one enlightened law and constitution for all should be a simple, desirable state of Western affairs. But no. As the West tilts Islamic to accommodate aspects of Sharia ranging from diet to sexual segregation to polygamous marriage to Sharia banking to censorship regarding Islam itself, Freysinger's point of view becomes, to appeasers, an increasingly controversial and dangerous one, reliably eliciting catcalls and worse from world media and political establishments. In their postmodern parlance, to be opposed to the totalitarian tenets of Sharia is be an "extremist." My only question is, How do you say, Ich bin ein extremist?

One litmus test I applied to the many politicians on the European Right I've recently interviewed concerned their views on Israel. As supposed "extremists," "fascists," even "neo-Nazis," what would they say?

I asked Freysinger where Israel fits into his worldview. "Our party has always defended Israel because we are well aware that if Israel disappears, we lose a vanguard," he replied. "They are fighting now our fight in fact; and as long as the Muslims are concentrated on Israel, it is not so hard for us. But as soon as Israel will have disappeared, well, they will come to get the other part."

I think by "the other part" he meant the rest of the West. In this outlook, Freysinger is by no means alone on the European Right: members of other such parties -- for example, Belgium's Vlaams Belang, the Danish People's Party and Holland's Freedom Party -- explained to me how they find in Israel's struggle against both Islamization and jihad common cause.

"The right-wing parties should join their forces to fight Islamization," Freysinger said.

Good idea.

It is a good idea, to put it mildly.
Do I sense a rustling of (backlash) against the spineless multi-culti suicide column, who's moral compass and common sense are so hopelessly broken as to still not be able to accept the declared and demonstrated imperialist tendencies of this savage dark-ages death-cult pretending to be just another religion?
There may be hope for what is left of Europe after all.
Too harsh?
You will know the meaning of harsh if islam succeeds at it's stated goals of putting you under the heel of sharia law.

It's the immigration, stupid!
You let large numbers of Moooslims into your country, you will see Sharia law pushed for implementation. You accept large numbers of Mexicans into your country, your country will become "Hispanicized". You admit large numbers of Indians into your country, your country will become "Hinduized".

Duh.

Islamic imperialism
How refreshing it is to see some common sense taking hold in Europe. Seeing the nonsense going on in France, Spain, and England, it is easy to believe that the European west has a death wish. How many times does one have to be punched in the nose before one realizes that the fellow standing in front of you wants to do you harm? islam, being a political movement as well is a cult, is a malignancy that needs to be excised. Everywhere islam makes inroads throughout it's history, there follows strife, violence, oppression and despair. Just look at the countries where islam holds sway for verification. $#it holes one and all. Three cheers for Mr.'s Freysinger, Wilders (Netherlands) et. al.

I've often thought the Swiss...
... were the sanest people in Europe. A progressive policy on gun ownership, bank secrecy, and during WWII, they told both Hitler and the allies to go stuff themselves -- just send us your money to watch.

Belief vs multiculuralism
Sadly I think these guys cannot prevail. Europe including Switzerland is post-Christian (cultural Christian) without strength of conviction. If one does not hold Christianity as Truth, then it is just another religion like Islam. Hanging onto catherdral spires while suppressing minarets has roughly the same justification as squatter's right (we got here first), and will lose out when demographics change (and the younger generation get indoctrined by the Left).

In the USA, orthodox Jews historically do not integrate because of their religious practice. Other cultures have their own ethnic enclaves (such as China town). A lot of it has to do with self protection as 1st generation immigrants deal with integration issues. Then as 2nd generations on get educated and gain confidence, integration and assimulation take place.

There have been synagogues for eons. There are Buddhist and Hindu temples built in recent years. These do not have the virulent belief (political) system of Islam. We can joke about some unsavory fund raising activities for certain political party, but they do not preach to overturn the West.

It will take believing Christians everywhere to stem the tide of Islam.

Western rationalism vs.Islamist hegemony
Finally, some good news out of Europe. Resistance to Islamist dogma and its' inevitable totalitarianism may actually spread before it is too late.

Now Europe, about INCREASING that native birth rate....
(Aside) Anyone out there think a market exists for $1 a roll toilet paper stamped with Danish Mohammed cartoons interspersed with Koran passages ?

Israel must comply to UN res. 242
Diana, you are globetrotting to find out whether antiimmigration parties in europe support Israel . I support a moratroium on immigration in our country.
With respect to Israel, I support President Carter in his effort to get Israel to meet its obligations under the Camp David Accords. That means that there is to be a removal of all settltements from the occupied territories and the establishment of a Palestinian state with its capitol east Jerusalem . This will be in accord with UN resolution 242
and the Camp David Accor

The culture where you live
If I, as an American, go to live in another country, the absolute bare minimum that is expected of me is that I follow the local laws and respect the local culture. I am not to declare "I'm an American, and I have rights to free speech, freedom of Religion, keeping and bearing arms, etc." If I brought a handgun to Sydney, Australia (where guns are banned) I could be arrested because that's the law. If I were to live in a Muslim country, I'd have to adjust to the fact that it is a Muslim country. I would be expected to follow their laws and respect their culture because I am in their land. If I were still in the military, it's almost certain that I WOULD have had to live in a muslim country for a short time, anyway.

So why is it that many politicians in the Western World, whether it be Europe or here, get upset when I demand the same consessions of visitors here that other countries demand of me when I visit? Why are immigrants to the US or Europe (provided they are from Latin America or the Islamic World) encouraged to bring their own culture and laws and language into the country in which they intend to live rather than at least being told to respect the laws and culture of their new homes? People coming to live in this country ought to learn to be fluent in English just like people who intend to live in France ought to learn to be fluent in French.

What's worse is that the expectations of Americans travelling somewhere are different from the expectations of Muslims travelling somewhere. Americans abroad can expect the locals in some countries to turn their noses up at us, while Muslims abroad can expect precicely the same people to bend over backward to allow them to bring their culture and oppressive laws into that country.

Historical Ignorance
Joseph - you need to re (or maybe begin) to educate yourself as you were obviously robbed of all historical facts concerning Israel and the middle east. Even Mark Twain, when visiting Israel, wrote of the desolation there - nary seeing a person in fact! Israel/Jerusalem is not even mentioned one time in Koran (some holy site if it's not even mentioned!) AFTER Israel became resettled by the Jews then Islam SUDDENLY desired it. Look at a satellite map - Arabs have 97% of all the middle east - whilst the Jews live on a piece the size of a postage stamp (wonder why thats the only part that is flourishing, while the rest of the middle east is a wasteland???) Then read Arafats manifesto, about how westerners are so dumb, and the media so complicit that if they stay there and then rename themselves Palestinians and shouted it long enough, then the ignorant, uneducated, but easily indoctrinated west would believe it! (guess Arafat was on to something afterall - to YOUR shame!) And if we are going back to "deals" then how come no mention from you about how the Arab states were supposed to bring back these "palestinians", but they caused so much terror that they kicked them out! Did you, perchance FORGET about that? And if Israel must "give back" to whom it never was anyway, are you suggesting we "give back" the USA to England?

ex-canuck
Where do i buy that toilet paper? That's a million $$ idea....except for the death sentence that you would get from the religion of peace.
Back in a few, have to wipe with Mohamed.

rocketeer
Look for it in about a year, secrecy/security factors being explored now. I just figured people might wish to show their regard for the "religion of peace" in a tangible way. Perhaps we could donate a percentage of any profits to wounded soldiers and marines, or bereaved families.
Heck, if "artistes" can feature our Saviour's image in a jar of urine, or elephant dung smeared on a rendering of the Blessed Virgin Mary, why can't WE poke fun at another "sacred cow", or in this case, pig ? OUR saviour/prophet/buddha-figure never married 9 year old girls, or murdered anyone, or incited "jihad" .

IMMAGRATION
Back in the forties, men out of work living in San Francisco, were seen on many a corner preaching to the public about the illegals coming into the USA. Here we are 2008, and the illegal migration of the illlegals are worse now then in the 40s. The point is, our goverment isin't listening to "for ther people"
The laws are on the books, and not enforced How sad

Sharia Banking
Not just in Europe.

http://www.augustreview.com/issues/global_banking/global_ba nks_embrace_islam_2007121282/

The implications for the west, and especially for the United States, are staggering. Because all Islamic banking products must be created and offered according to strict Shari’a law, global banks are doing for Islam what it could never do on its own: give legitimacy to Shari’a and infiltrate it into the fabric of western society.

Zakat demands a tithe of 2.5 percent of revenue be donated to Islamic charity. If western banks follow this rule, their contributions will be staggering. It is certain that a portion of this money will end up in the hands of radical Muslims who are sworn to destroy the U.S. and replace its government with Shari’a law.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority pledged to make a $7.5 billion investment in Citigroup (C, news, msgs).

Both investment groups are expected to take board seats, which means these moves alone put the fate of two of the largest banks in Europe and the United States in the hands of managers from regions that not long ago were dismissed as high-risk.

Saudi Arabia plans to establish a sovereign wealth fund that is expected to dwarf Abu Dhabi’s $900bn and become the largest in the world.

We fund the war against ourselves. One more ramification of transferring our wealth to other countries...who want to see us destroyed.

Whats Wrong With Populism Now?
"They claim the minaret is not necessary for worship, but is rather a symbol of Islamic law, and as such incompatible with Switzerland's legal system.

Signatures are now being collected to force a nationwide referendum on the issue which, under Switzerland's system of direct democracy, would be binding.

The move has shocked Switzerland's 350,000 Muslims, many of whom have been campaigning for decades for more recognition for their faith.

In theory Switzerland is a secular state, whose constitution guarantees freedom of religious expression to all. In practice however mosques in Switzerland tend to be confined to disused warehouses and factories."

The Swiss People's Party is trying to preserve the heritage of the Swiss people without being runover by the 350,000 thousand Muslems who live in their country.

Well, isn't THAT interesting...

As they say, it takes a thief to catch a thief. I guess it takes barbarian to beat barbarian. Irony of the Universe.

No, I'm not insane. Do you know when women got right to vote in Switzerland? Universal suffrage was voted into a law, then came into effect on January 1st 2000. Yeah, that's AD, not BC. Up to then, every individual canton could have banned women from voting - obviously, MOST didn't. But I still remember an article I read in late 80s - early 90s about popular revolt in one of the cantons because they wanted to allow women to vote.

Then, about toilet paper - I don't think there would be any problem with that. Precepts of muslim religion don't allow them to use toilet paper for THAT need. They use water to clean themselves up after number 2. Often in a bottle, most advanced toilets have hose running into the bowl for that need.
