Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

As the conversations and accusations continue to swirl around the proposed bailout legislation, Dennis Prager sought clarity from Senator Joe Lieberman. He spoke to Dennis from the Senate cloak room.

Prager: Let’s begin with this: Were you surprised? The public is being told a deal was made and then torpedoed by House Republicans. Is that the fact?

Lieberman: This is not the fact. There was not a deal. There was an agreement, let’s say, among some members of the Senate Banking Committee and the Democrats in the House side of the House Financial Services Committee. They went out and announced it. Frankly, I think they announced it prematurely, because the normal course is to take those agreements back to the four caucuses. So, there never was an agreement. It was clear the House Republicans are very much against the Paulson plan. I was in the Senate Democratic caucus with Paulson the other night—one of my rare appearances these days, Dennis, at Senate Democratic…

Prager: I was thinking that.

Lieberman: And there was a lot of really emotional challenging of Paulson. [It was the same among] Senate Republicans. So no deal, and then Senator McCain came back to try to put one together. I think he’s in a position now as the titular leader of the Republican Party to have a special ability to bring people together. And his goal is to get an agreement that saves the country from an economic disaster—but to make sure the taxpayers’ money is protected in it, and I think that’s the direction in which we’re heading.

Prager: What was the major Senate Democratic objection to the Paulson plan?

Lieberman: Now the difference: To some extent the things people focus on in the different caucuses are different, but the overall concerns are not. There’s real concern about one making sure that if it does end up being $700 billion of taxpayers’ money that the taxpayers are protected as best we can—and that we basically try to get an ownership interest in any fiscal entity that we put money into. That was not there in the original Paulson plan. That’s a major concern of House Republicans as well, and also Senate Democrats obviously want to go after Wall Street and cap compensations—so does John McCain—of the CEOs on Wall Street. Of course, they would like to introduce a tax increase into this bill, but that will never go.

Prager: Alright, so what is the big divide? Are there one, two, three issues? What’s the big divide?

Lieberman: You know it’s an interesting question. I think there’s a conceptual agreement that there has to be protection for the taxpayers’ money, there has to be a cap on executive compensation, there has to be a sort of oversight—none of which was in the original Paulson plan. The House members are very concerned. They want to—they would prefer—that the government have the ability to try to just insure some of these banks instead of actually buying assets, because that could be done more cheaply, and [they want] to have Wall Street pay for it. Secondly, Secretary Paulson seems to be skeptical about whether that would work. I think that compromise may be—make that one of the options that he has to consider. But the good news here is that we’re now down to four people negotiating—one for Senate Democrats and Republicans, one for House Republicans and Democrats.

Prager: And who are they?

Lieberman: It’s Chris Dodd, senator from Connecticut for Senate Democrats, Judd Gregg, senator from New Hampshire for Senate Republicans. On the House side it’s Barney Frank from Massachusetts for Democrats and Roy Blunt from Missouri for Republicans. I feel quite optimistic that these four can reach an agreement, hopefully by the end of the day that we can take to the floor of both chambers tomorrow. I think everybody understands that we have got to get something done before the markets open on Monday. But frankly, it’s got to be something sensible because it makes no sense to rush to do something that doesn’t get the job done and is unfair to the taxpayers. And I think that’s the whole McCain approach. That’s why he flew back. That’s why I think he’s been constructive. That’s why I think you are seeing some coming together of the parties.

Prager: So Senator McCain’s coming back to Washington was helpful?

Lieberman: Yes, I mean the Democrats are trying to put out the message that there was a total agreement and McCain came back and blew it up. That’s just not right, not true. There was no total agreement. The House Republicans particularly were always not part of the proposed agreement and a lot of Republicans and Democrats in both Houses were not part of it. I think McCain went back and forth yesterday afternoon, this morning between Senate and House. He talked to a lot of people, was on the phone with the administration, the White House, Paulson and I think he’s a big part of the reason why it’s down to four strong negotiators that are roomed together. That’s always the best way to get something done. And then they come out to the caucuses. So he felt that there was enough progress made that he could take off for Oxford, Mississippi. He’ll be at the debate tonight, and then he will fly back right afterward to be here tomorrow to see if we can close the deal.

Prager: Did Senator Obama play any analogous role on the Democratic side?

Lieberman: Not that I can see. And that’s an interesting point. I wasn’t in the White House meeting yesterday. Some of the Democrats criticized John McCain for not making a long speech saying that Senator Obama had, but John’s here not to make speeches. It was a very contentious meeting and he basically said for the sake of the country and the people we serve we got to get together and reach a bipartisan agreement. And then he went to work to try to make that happen.

Prager: I have to tell you that was my read before you came on. It was all conjecture and, ironically, I came to that conclusion based on Harry Reid’s comments.

Lieberman: It’s really been laughable. The truth is, when McCain came back he did it sincerely. He did something risky because staying on the campaign trail you are not accountable for what happens here. He came back to try to do something right for the country. But, if it doesn’t happen, then he’s accountable for it.

Prager: That’s right.

Lieberman: I think he is going to help make it happen this weekend in a way that will protect taxpayers. So to say that he caused a problem—I think Obama and McCain are the now leaders of their parties by virtue of their nomination.

Prager: That’s right. Well said.

Lieberman: This is a big problem. And for them not to be here would have been a mistake.

US Treasury Department dreams up $700B
A Forbes article http://www.forbes.com/businessinthebeltway/2008/09/23/bail out-paulson-congress-biz-beltway-cx_jz_bw_0923bailout.html quotes:

"In fact, some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy.

"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."

WOW! so our own Treasury Department doesn't even know what's going on, but throws a dart at the wall, and whap! 700 billion???

What kind of lunacy is this? Does anyone expect our government to get this right, when we don't even know what we're doing?

This is SCARY!!!

The Bailout
Three words I have not heard put together :
Sound Banking Principles. How would this act of Grand Theft (sic) bring on sound banking principles ? The Community Reinvestment Act
should be suspended by Executive Order, then
repealed. That would be a start.
The Federal Reserve Board should be
audited and the effect and scale of their
loose money/ manipulated interest rates
should be loudly exposed. Then, the Fed should
be abolished and a Gold Standard implemented.

How we got into this mess

The Fox Protecting the Hens
The idea that Chris Dodd and Barney Franks are the ones working on a solution for a problem that they created and guarded, while personally benefitting, is mind bugling.

Excellent article
Joe Lieberman is a hell of a lot better source than Reid/Pelosi or Dodd/Frank (who should be ridden out of the congress on a rail. McCain went back to DC to continue his effort in trying to solve this mess.Obaloney went back on the campaign and started slandering McCain.Who should be President? I had really hoped McCain would have read chapter and verse to Obaloney in the debate when he tried to pin this on the Repubs, but of course, had McCain pointed out it was Democratic Presidents starting with Carter and aided and abetted by Clinton, the NAACP, ACORN, LaRaza and other "protectors of the downtrodden", the cries of "racist" would be heard through-out the land. Its tough to fight with one hand tied behind your back.

Why are Dodd and Frank allowed
anywhere near the "fix". They are directly responsible and should be in jail, not figuring out how to screw the American people more.

If there is no bailout, some people will hurt and the economy will slow for 5-10 years. If there is a bailout, we will all hurt much and we will never recover, because we will have ushered in complete socialism and be no different than Venezuela. Our government is now going to "own" all the financial businesses in the US?? Determine prices and wages and to h@11 with the American ideal of property ownership and personal responsibility.

Bye USA, it was nice while it lasted. Prepare for anarchy, because there are too many that will not sit idly by and allow the socialists to simply steal the country.

IMPEACH SENATOR BARACK OBAMA
Hi,

I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed:

"Impeach Senator Barack Obama"
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/obamaimpeachment?e ...

I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It's free and takes less than a minute of your time.

Thanks!

Reality over appearances
Well, if any of these politicians are so concerned about putting country first as they claim, they would make the effort to first LEARN the facts and then take a stand to abolish the rule mandating mark-to-market accounting instead of bickering and haggling over ACORN vs. securities insurance!

Private entities should be allowed to choose what accounting method they want to use, as long as they disclose honestly. But once again, the government has to interfere in yet another profession--accounting--as yet another avenue for its do-gooding. Decreeing that companies must use a certain accounting method for the sake of the lazy, passive investor is what caused the slip on the edge of the economic knife.

Here is a fact, and McCain had better consider it: If McCain supports the bailout and it passes, and Obama does not, Obama will take the election. That is because in the final analysis, the American people respond to reality and self-interest, not appearances and showmanship, and when there is sudden hyperinflation, recession, banks still going bankrupt, markets collapsing, and unemployment spiraling, they will (rightly) connect it to the bailout and remember who supported it and who did not. All of McCain's "I'm the leader who got 'er done and Obama didn't" posturing over the bailout bill will actually work against him. Not even a nuclear war could alter the election outcome at that point. McCain had better start facing reality, or else he will totally destroy any chance he still has of winning the election.

This is my final warning to McCain.

No Bailout!!
I posted an article from The Augusta Chronicle today at 9:58 A.M. on Michelle Malkin's column. It was surprising that this is still going on,if we are in such dire straits.

I do not believe we are being told the reason for this bailout. I hope no Republican will vote for it. Democrats caused it and only want Republicans for scapegoats in case it all blows up.

reply to Cape Conservative
I get sick of hearing about how minority "borrowers did not understand what they were getting into," and "lenders took advantage of them." HOGWASH! The libs and 'Crats obsess with making victims of EVERYONE-- it is their damm religion.

You cannot fix/coach stupid! Borrowers MUST be clearly told that their payments can go up on an ARM. If they were gambling that their home values would keep escalating so they could sell to cover their behinds-- well, dare we say it again? STUPID!!!

It is STUNNING that lenders were told to make no job verification and slack credit mortgage loans. Some of the stench here relates to loans made under these circumstances to ILLEGAL aliens, who sported out in the night when the payments were do... the very loan documents they signed were ILLEGAL due to multiple frauds.

Oracle1 - Indeed
a MONSTER problem!

Remember trying to qualify for our first homes??? We had to jump through hoops...add it all up / divide by / results not acceptable? Too bad! Try again at a later date! Thankfully we were never turned down, but we also did our homework and never bit off more than we could chew ;-) In today's NOW world, no one believes they should wait for anything!

With Dodd & Frank the two
DEMOCRATS negotiating, that is like having the bank robber's driver in the negotiator's chair! Who made this decision???? Why????? Are there no senators in the Senate Building with better credentials than these two thieves who looked the other way as our country's financial ship was sinking???? All I can say is WOW! Some brilliant Congressional decision-making here!

JUST ONE MORE REASON TO:

VOTE CONSERVATIVE!!! LOCAL/STATE/FEDERAL!!!!

McCAIN/PALIN 2008 will help get our country back on the right track!

Read Give Me That Old Time Religion column by Daniel Henninger in the Wall Street Journal for some great insight on what's missing in America today and what we need to do about it!

replies to onceamarine and Lady X
thanx for the kind words... some other thoughts:

Speaking as a veteran banker (25 years at senior levels with major banks)...

There is NO QUESTION that the government's sticky fingerprints are ALL OVER this mess!

Banks were told in no uncertain terms-- make loans to "poor people," or you cannot grow via mergers and acquisitions. The larger banks (doing the merging and acquiring) make many more loans.

Fully $1 TRILLION of sub-prime loans were made, ostensibly backed up by "Frannie" and Fannie, which were under-capitalized and run by crooks like Franklin Delano Raines.

The government SHOULD regulate banks to assure that they are adequately capitalized (as a margin for error) and making decent loans because they are playing with other peoples' money. The government should NOT, however, attempt to redistribute wealth by ordering lenders to make loans to people who do not even pay rent on time and whose source of income is unproven.

"No credit? Bad credit? No Problem!" Wanna' bet?! A monster problem!

Great link to this youtube video. Thanks.

All I have to say personally to the crowd of idiots is, IDIOTS..

.

To Sheila and Oracle1 --
Thank you both for the link to that very telling video! I will CERTAINLY pass it on, and would encourage others on this site to do the same.

Here's another one worth watching and passing along to anyone of voting age:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMnSp4qEXNM

a GREAT video about the crisis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5tZc8oH--o

This youtube takes a few minutes to watch, but it shows really WHY we are in this financial crisis, which was substantially caused by the left/'Crats... I urge you to WATCH IT, PASS IT ALONG, and POST IT ANYWHERE where cognitive people might be interested in understanding the mess.

The video has links and reference sources to build its case. Speaking as a banker of 25 years who was asked to deal for a time with problem assets, I can attest that the banks were effectively compelled to make marginal to poor mortgage loans under the guise of government backing. We all knew that CRA type lending was a ticking time bomb.

The video shows how a flawed social engineering theory resulted in a massive housing bubble, which inexorably had to burst eventually, exposing the fatally flawed lending mistakes engendered by government leftists, first beginning under Jimma' Carter, but made far worse under Slick Willie Clinton.

It was not first and foremost (or even primarily) the marketplace which failed here... it was, once again, social engineering theory and government fiat... but "greed and graft in the marketplace" will wear the collar. This is not, however, to exonerate the thieves packaging mortgages (MBS's) on Wall Street. They are the same morally-bereft, vulture types who were there for the LBO and "dot.com" ripoffs... this time it is MBS's and derivatives.

I will say this-- IF the government bailout does not overprice the "assets," we COULD actually come out whole. We did on the Chrysler bailout, and even when we bailed out Mexico, which paid us back early and at a premium-- probably with some of the oil or drug $ we send them! We even came out surprisingly well on the massive S&L bailout following Reagan's ill-fated and ill-advised deregulation of thrifts (S&L's).

To those who said Lieberman.....
isn't a valid source because the left doesn't recognize him are wrong - who cares what the
radical leftists who hyjacked what used to be the Democratic Party, think??? They are a useless but dangerous body in this Nation, and the sooner we can get rid of Pelosi, Reid and the rest, the better.
It's obvious that McCain wants to fix the problem while Obama wants to use this as a way to boost himself into the White House. He is a dispicable excuse for an empty suit.

Insighting Truth and Kari
Insighting Truth:
Is your motto "screw the truth and the facts as long as you sound intelligent and emote?" Sheeeesh. And you even include the word "truth" in your name!

Kari:
What can you expect from people who refer to 9/11 as "ancient history" for fear with which to manipulate the masses?

Lieberman
...has been cast out of the Democratic Party because of his refusal to toe the party line. All good Leftards are now required to accuse him of being just as much of a liar as the Republicans are.

And I've had Leftards tell me he's "scary", too.

If you're a true Leftard, Lieberman is no longer considered a valid source.

We all have our marching orders. Let's go!

No to Obama is a No To Socialism.
And, Obama promises even more Socialism. Heard his speech last night. More Government Spending on Existing Bureaucracy, plus adding some new programs, that spend, spend, spend, and produce catastrophe, and the more they meddle and spend, the more catastrophic things become.

And, Obama failed to mention that his old Financial Advisor Buddy, Raines, the CEO of one of the Freddie or Fannie outfits passed on over 100 thousand dollars to Obama and numerous other Social Democrats during this campaign cycle. Wonder what 100 thousand plus dollars to Obama will get you in millions or billions in Tax Payer Dollars. This is how the country got in this mess. Those Liberal Democrats and their Socialist Programs get Campaign Finance Money and other Payoffs that go "undisclosed" for favored legislation that pay back their "contributors" in the billions, and all,of course, at Taxpayer Expense. This is why all those slobbering Liberals like Barney Frank, Harry Reid, Chris Dodd, Pelosi, Obama, and all the rest were seething and angry at Responsible Republicans who were saying, "No, let Wallstreet Pay For Their Own Bailout." These Liberals and their reckless legislation, policies and the associated spending is what brought on this debacle to begin with. Look at the Mess Liberalism has also caused in Education. We now have the most expensive public education system in the world that has dumbed down our kids to the Lowest Common Denominator, and Senator Barack Hussein Obama has, as one of his new Bureaucratic Ideas to make kids attend one of these dumbing down factories at even earlier ages that they do now. The Socialists do not want to leave even one Child Behind Who Has Not Been Thorougly Dumbed Down and Brainwashed into being a Little Socialsist. Dumed Down Populations are easy To Manipulate and Control. The Communists have always known this. Hitler also knew it. He had the Youth Corps that trained little Nazis.

McCain & the Bailout
Sorry about that bad link. This is the right one about Obama and ACORN
http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/07/05/obamas-acorn/

McCain & The Bailout
You bet McCain threw a monkey wrench into the "deal" the dems wanted without even listening to the house. That is what he does. He looks out for the Country no matter what the conquences. His main platform is he will shake up Washington. If there was a deal it was a bad one. The Dem's wanted 20% of this money to go to ACORN, A radical Obama driven org. that has a very bad record in regards to voter fraud, corruption, just go look at their record. Obama was one of their teachers. They have said on more than one occassion they will take over this Country from the inside..."HELLO" that is precisely what they are trying to do. Go to http://noquarter.com and read all about it folks.

McCain didn't blow up agreement - truth
I am glad an insider can give us the right information about how the Democrats announced an "agreement" that did not totally exist, knowing it did not exist, trying to make it look like McCain caused the derailment.

I just hope this can be communicated widely to the average voter who may not be as politically aware and believes what he/she reads in the news.

Here's the facts:
The proposal is socialistic.
Bush is a socialist.
Bush is 100% behind this proposal.
Obama is a socialist.
Obama supports the idea that tax payers pay for the bailout.
McCain is a socialist.
McCain supports the idea that tax payers pay for the bailout.
The socialist are in charge.
No matter who wins in November a socialist will be in charge.
The American people will be screwed by the socialists in charge.

betray us
if our betters in washington reward the criminals with a bailout instead of prosecuting and permanently imprisoning the perpetrators, and i do mean all of them, including dodd, frank, rangel, and obama, this is just another in a long list of betrayals. we sent representatives to washington to represent us, not betray us. put the criminals in prison!

DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR DEFINITION IS?
"Prager: Let’s begin with this: Were you surprised? The public is being told a deal was made and then torpedoed by House Republicans. Is that the fact?

ASLAN WRITES:

Oh Well, I guess as Bill Clinton would say: It depends on what your definition of is....is......?????? Interesting that Dennis now knows where most of the deals are made in the Senate? The Cloak Room.....

Mark to Marketing
In the previous reply I suggested Googling "Mark to Marketing" to learn why this type of financing should be stopped, according to Newt Gingrich. Evidently, M to M is common in today's financial world. I looked it up myself and found the following url:
http://www.bis.org/events/armpr05/landsman1.pdf as an informational example. You can find a lot more if you try.

out of it
The people who think there is no rush and there should be no rush are just out of it.
We are a world community. An agreement should be reached before the stock market in Japan opens, I am told, and they are ahead of us in time.
Banks don't keep money around ready to hand it back to investors. If there is a run on the banks they go bankrupt. Our economy requires faith in our financial institutions and banks, and in our currency. If people rush to the banks to get their money out and then convert it into gold,we could see a collapse of the world economy. This is not the time to be petty about some people who are getting away with having exercised bad judgment. There is enough blame to go around. Just fix it, now.
Wake up.

Reid is a Rat-faced lier
First Harry Reid goes on TV to say that the Bail-Out won't go forward until Sen. McCain comes on board with it because he wants to Dems to be able to put the blame on him with voters rise up in rebellion. Then when he finds out that McCain is actually coming to D.C. to help out, he blows up and says it is political posturing. After which he blames McCain for ruining the Bail-out, even though he doesn't say anything in the meeting and actually there was never an agreement. When are people going to wake up to the fact that Reid and Pelosi have to be kicked out?
There should be no bail-out as such. Check out "mark to marketing" on Google. Newt Gingrich says getting rid of that would take care of 75% of the problem, and Wall Street could take care of the rest. Then we need to investigate everyone in charge of Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac and the politicians that supported them and blocked the recommendations of reform over the past 5 years, and put them in prison!

Just a thinker:
In a sense I agree with you, but you may go a bit far. Still, I like your attitue. I heard today about a DA in San Diego who wants a middle of the road approach - keep people who are defaulting in their homes and have them work out payment arragements with the banks - they stay in their homes, have to keep their committments, and maybe pay a little more than they expected, and the banks take less than their contract, and so feel some of the pinch, but it will be much less catastrophic.

No Obama Ever!!
Obama is a stooge who is the Hand Picked Hand Puppet of the Liberal Democrats who want a president who will never read a bill, but will sign it, a president who will appoint anybody the Liberal Democrats tell him to.

Obama will not read any bills because, even if he did, he would not understand what they said. He is a know nothing, do nothing narcissist, who only wants the Spot Light and the Trappings of Power that would go along with the Presidency. He started using a Presidential Seal even when touring Europe and the middle east. Presupmtious and pomopous a$$ is what he is. Oh yeah, he replaced the U.S. Flag with the Obama Circular Swirl Flag. What a Narcissist??

Delusions of Grandeur are what fill his head which is devoid of anything else.

Well, he has awaken America to a Clear and Present Danger, and we now know that for now, Obama is that clear and present danger, and that is why we will make sure he never gets elected. We are Voting No Obama on Nov. 4, 2008, and when McCain gets in, the party in DC is over. He has promised to cut out federal agencies and their wasteful spending, that Liberal Democrats use to control us and to buy votes from Constituents who get paid for doing nothing at workers expense.

Baloney
There should be NO bail out. Period.

And, WHY does this have to get done this weekend behind closed doors, without anyone having read the final product or the public knowing anything but soundbites by liars like Reid and Dodd.

And, DODD -- who should be on trial at this point with Barney Frank. Why is Dodd in the negotiation when he is one of the robbers.

No way -- Lieberman is wrong wrong wrong. They said 3 days ago the stock market would crash, and here we are and the sky is not falling. Sure there will be fallout, but that is capitalism and free markets. Get rid of Fannie and Freddie and put the thieves in jail with the Enron boys.

We the citizens need to take our country back and our liberty and freedoms back. Clean both houses and get some true conservative, Constitutional believers back to do the people's work.

But
Zerobama said "call me if you need me" when you are the anointed one that's all that's needed, isn't it.
He's one of the kings of pork isn't he?

I've been irritated since this whole prolonged
election fiasco started..this clown has been in the Senate three years and only put 143 days of work (if that's what you call it) in the Senate, the rest was out campaigning. He's paid
$166,000 and some change, by us; so that's a pretty good part time pay check; I wish someone would offer me such a job. This obssessed
drive for the Presidency by a rookie, without any thought to the fact that by running one our dime, when he should be in the Senata is STEALING, he's a THIEF..no work ethic and yet he expect to be rewarded for his white collar theft with the Presidency. Not with my vote he won't.

Thanks for the clarity
There is no MSM to trust anymore, Fox tries hard to be impartial. McCain was needed and Barry was not, but the Dems were in a fix.

Being sincere about his country and the crisis, McCain reacted accordingly.

The rest is spin to cover Barry.

The Great Boondoggle
Why is it imperative that this thing pass this week? Are Paulson and some Democrats trying to get it done before it can be investigated?

85 billion has already been given to AIG. Two-thirds of their assets are out of this country. If this turkey passes will it be the end of handouts? No one knows?

How could money from this turkey be allocated to ACORN? How many other dubious factions are waiting for their hand-outs?

I believe much of this money will be sent out of country. Barack Obama has plans to put money into poorer countries. Is this buyout being proposed hoping he will be elected?

Tonite--
Tonite, Lou Dobbs (our favorite) had this bailout fiasco spelled out. It is a sham and we all know it. If the sky falls as some of the political punks say, we can hope it falls on the punks that are responsible, politicians included....

McCain Saved $700B
Anyone that says McCain went to Washington to NOT serve the American tax payers have not paid attention the last two days.
Senator McCain is obligated to me and you to make sure we do not get FLEECED! So is you know who.
The Maverick has a LONG track record of getting it done, and yes getting it done with oposition.
And for those of you that say he's just like BUSH, HE IS DEFINITELY NOT LINING UP THIS TIME!
It's the lib dem's handing our $700B over.
Thank you House Republicans and the Maverick!

Renny
It is said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I am frankly astonished that you can say "Mac was thinking of America and Dems, as usual, were thinking of pork." No I don't see it that way at all. Remember the proposal was devised by a Republican President Bush and his appointees, including Secretary Paulsen. The original proposal had 700 billion given to Paulsen without any oversight. Dems (with some republican support) asked for significant oversight. Oversight including a veto of Paulsen's detailed distribution plan. In addition, Paulsen wanted the 700 billion to be given in one lump sum. It was the dems who proposed (Senator Schumer was first) to give the money in partial payments with the requirement that Paulsen must come back to congress for more (congress could disapproe). It was the Dems who proposed that the public investment must have a strong payback plan where the public money would buy equity and not be loan. That is the public would be paid back first. It was the Dems who fought for (along with Republicans) that any company that receives the "bailout" does not allow its executives to get a windfall payout. It was the Dem leadership who fought for a clause in the agreement include protection for people holding "bad" mortgages. I'd say the dem leadership goals and plans look a lot better than the Bush/Paulsen Plan. But as I said beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

As usual, Mac was thinking of America
and Dems. were thinking of their own pork.

Reid has to be the worst majority leader the Senate has ever produced, and there have been some doozies already.

Nothing Reid says can be taken to any bank. He declared Iraq lost. He has his own sleazy land deals all over NV. He's from a state whose major industry is "Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," surely the most immoral and amoral motto of any organization in the world.

An Idea
Why don't they formulate say 3 plans, make the details of all 3 public. Give the American public time to go over these plans then have a nationwide referendum to choose which plan to make into law. This would relieve the gutless wonders in the Congress from being responsible and it would allow the American public to decide an issue that is so important. Just a thought.

Spin Top Spin
Senator McCain when asked by Katie Couric what he thought of the proposal from Paulson and the President (well after he, McCain claimed he was suspending his campaign to come to Washington) said he hadn't even read the proposal. This was at the time a 3 page proposal. How pathetic can you get. Then we are told at the meeting at the Whitehouse that McCain offered no ideas either positive or negative about the revised plan sent back to the President from Congressional leaders. My guess is that Congressman were getting heat from their constituents. The conservative Republicans at the last minute decided they couldn't take the heat and would scrap the President's plan and go a different route. (Which may or may not be a better plan.) However, they did this without telling the leaders of congress before the meeting at the Whitehouse. McCain presumably knew about this but chose to let the meeting go ahead. For what reason was McCain and Obama summoned to the Whitehouse? What exactly has McCAin done to help the process. As far as I can tell little or nothing. Frankly, I wouldn't trust anything he proposed himself given his financial knowledge. Further, I feel very sorry for the Democratic leadership that really is trying to make the Paulson/Bush proposal work. There is no doubt in my mind that they are trying their best for the American people. The question is asked by a poster could McCain have blown the agreement by not saying anything at the Whtehouse meeting. The real question that needs to be answered is if McCain knew the agreement was dead (the others in the room apparently didn't) why did he let this meeting go ahead. Given his smile at the cameras prior to the doors being closed I have grave doubts about the motives of McCain in this crisis.

SubPilot
You are so right. Obama promises change, is this the change he envisions? How is this any different than the past? In a time of crisis the last thing the American people need is Harry Reid making up stories of how McCain "blew up the deal". It sounds like Mr. Reid is upset perhaps because he knows McCain will expose his trying to add earmarks? Even while Reid is trying to help the economy by bailing out failing banks he's also trying to quietly sneak in legislation to ban drilling for shale oil which FURTHER hurts our economy AND the American people overall. Reid and his cohorts need to be replaced ASAP with real leaders who are more transparent. Adding earmarks to this bill is outrageous and Reid should be exposed for trying it.

The Truth Does Not Matter
I am looking at all this with total disgust. What is being attempted is to prevent a total meltdown of not only our economy but the world economy. This is the deal that must get done. What are the Dems doing? They are beyond spinning they have gone to outright fabrications in order to bring Presidential Politics to the issue. They do thier normal thing and accuse others for what they have done themselves. It is an old trick, and they are very good at it.

The truth simply does not matter anymore. Only the narrative or story matters. I am not interested in spin from either side. The American People want facts. Facts are a little hard to come by these days. It requires a lot of effort to research any news story to find the facts. I am tired of having to filter the news. Fox has done the best job, but still they pass on the spin from both sides as if it were fact.

No surprise here...

If you actually listened, one minute the Rodent Reid was saying that McCain ruined the "agreement" and in the next minute he was saying that McCain said nothing but a few words at the end of the meeting....

So, the question is, how could have McCain "blown" an agreement if he only (supposedly!) said a few words at the end of the meeting.

Got to give it to the RATS... they're pretty good a lying and spinning, but not that bright!

Bailout and John McCain
Thank you Senator Lieberman for clarifying. I was certain John McCain was sincere about helping the taxpayers and that the Dems were trying to "spin" the situation. Thanks Dennis for speaking with the Senator.
