If It's Bad for America, It's Good for Democrats

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

One of the two major political parties of the United States has linked all its electoral hopes on domestic pathologies, economic downturns and foreign failure.

It is actually difficult to name any positive development for America that would benefit the Democratic Party's chances in a national election.

Name almost any subject, and this unhealthy pattern can be discerned.

If African Americans come to believe that America is a land of opportunity in which racism has been largely conquered, it would be catastrophic for the Democrats. The day that most black Americans see America in positive terms will be the day Democrats lose any hope of winning a national election. Whatever one believes about the extent of racism in America, one cannot deny that the Democrats need black Americans to feel victimized by racism. Contented black Americans spell disaster for the Democratic Party.

If women marry, it is bad for the Democratic Party. Single women are an essential component of any Democratic victory. Unmarried women voted for Kerry by a 25-point margin (62 percent to 37 percent), while married women voted for President Bush by an 11-point margin (55 percent to 44 percent). According to a pro-Democrat website, The Emerging Democratic Majority, "the 25-point margin Kerry posted among unmarried women represented one of the high water marks for the Senator among all demographic groups."

After women marry, they are more likely to abandon leftist views and to vote Republican. And if they then have children, they will vote Republican in even more lopsided numbers. The bottom line is that when Americans marry, it is bad for the Democratic Party; when they marry and make families, it is disastrous for the party.

If immigrants assimilate, it is not good for Democrats. The Democratic Party has invested in Latino separatism. The more that Hispanic immigrants come to feel fully American, the less likely they are to vote Democrat. The liberal notion of multiculturalism helps Democrats, while adoption of the American ideal of e pluribus unum (out of many, one) helps Republicans. That is one reason Democrats support bilingual education -- it hurts Hispanic children, but it keeps them from full assimilation -- and oppose making English America's official language.

Concerning the economy, the same rule applies. The better Americans feel they are doing, the worse it is for Democrats. By almost every economic measure (the current housing crisis excepted), Americans are doing well. The unemployment rate has been at historically low levels and inflation has been held in check, something that rarely accompanies low unemployment rates. Nevertheless, Democrats regularly appeal to class resentment, knowing that sowing seeds of economic resentment increases their chances of being elected.

The most obvious area in which this rule currently applies is the war in Iraq. The Democrats have put themselves in the position of needing failure in Iraq in order to win the next election. And again, perceptions matter more than reality. Even if America is doing better in the war, what matters most for the Democrats are Americans' perceptions of the war. The worse the stories from Iraq, the better for Democrats.

That helps to explain why the mainstream media, who ache for a Democratic victory, feature stories of wounded American soldiers, grieving families of killed soldiers and atrocity stories -- such as the apparently fictitious story printed in the New Republic. But they almost never feature stories about military heroism and altruism. Americans read and watch far more stories about soldiers who commit atrocities than about soldiers who commit heroic actions and who show love to Iraqi civilians.

The list is almost endless. Thus, when pro-American foreign leaders -- such as Nicolas Sarkozy in France -- are elected, even that is not good for the Democrats. The more the Democrats can show that America is hated, the more the Democrats can argue that we need them in order to be loved abroad.

Undoubtedly, some Democrats might respond that the same thesis could be written if a Democrat were in the White House and the Republicans were out of power. But that is not at all the case. First, there is no equivalent list of bad things happening to America that benefits Republicans. Second, everything written here about the Democrats -- except about the Iraq War, which was not taking place then -- could have been written when Democrat Bill Clinton was president.

I am not saying that in their hearts all Democrats want black America to regard America as a racist society, or want Hispanics to remain unassimilated, or Americans to feel economically discontented, or fewer families to be formed, or America to lose in Iraq, or foreign nations to hate us.

But what most Democrats want in their hearts is not the issue. The issue is that if Democrats want to win, they can do so only if bad things happen to America.

Again, Prager right on the mark
Prager lists a few examples, but the list is endless.

Democrats need Americans to feel like victims and need them to feel that the establishment is set up to keep them down. This is the fatal flaw of the left. Most evil done in the world is done in the name of victim hood. It can cause you to do things you normally wouldn't do and keeps you wallowing in your self-pity which keeps you from advancing in life. Take the Palestinians whose victim hood and hatred of Israel have stunted their own growth while Israel has thrived.

Blacks in America can thank the Democrats for continuing the notion of their victim hood status keeping them treading water in life. "Why should I put any effort in when Jesse Jackson tells me the evil white man will hold me down anyway?" This is why immigrants from Japan, Cuba, China, Korea, etc. can come to this country -- not knowing the language -- and set up a small business or find menial jobs to survive. And by the second or third generation, they are thriving and making more money on average than the median American family. And this is virtually with no representation in government unlike African Americans. Why can they thrive like this and African Americans have so much trouble moving up the ladder? Because they are not told they are victims everyday. They are told America is great and anyone can succeed.

As for Mexican Americans -- lets all hope you do not get cast under the same spell by Democrats, or your growth in America will be stunted as well.

You name the issue, the better people do in life, the more successful they become, and the more optimistic they feel about their future, the worse it will be for the Democratic Party.

Like life, America is a bad thing.
What Prager fails to point out is that Democrats have the vision to see that life is a task to be endured, not enjoyed. If a man is paying attention, he will see that the world is packed with misery, and trouble lies at every door.

Success should not be celebrated because others had to be taken advantage of on order for another person to succeed. Nature cannot be appreciated because the air is foul, the water pollutd, the scenery littered with evidence of man, and all animals are either exploited or face extinction.

Any man that is content is merely ignorant of his situation. All non-whites are victims of those from European stock. The poor are victims of the rich. And the rich are evil because they are greedy parasites.

All invention and development has only served to destroy the ecosystems, and even medical advances are bad because they keep nature destroying people alive longer.

The world is an evil, filthy cesspool, and life is a horrid experience. America, with all of its advances and industrial might makes it so. Conservatives choose to ignore this reality, whereas leftists are willing to remind themselves of it every day.

LD
I think you rushed this one a bit.

Shame on Daniel Prager
Of course I come to this board to check on what conservatives are up to. And I am not shy about expressing my feelings on the issues. But, I genuinely enjoy reading the various authors and I hate to admit it but the quality of writing by conservative pundits is often far superior to the liberal counterparts. A well written article is a great pleasure to read even if you do not share its conclusions.

I used to even enjoy Mr. Prager's articles. But no more. Out of the authors on this board I find the most unredeemable despicable. He claims to be a man of god and not only says that his religion guides him but that it should guide us as well.

But his articles are almost always filled with hatred and contempt. He really showed his true colors on the Duke case. While he stated that he was appalled at the treatment of students who had been judged before the facts were clear he levied a vicious attack against the accuser. But the accuser had been convicted of no crime. No civil judgment had been levied against her. And she was described as disturbed. Any one who has experience with sexual assaults know that the truth can be a very slippery thing. The students may have been innocent. But that does not mean that the accuser was lyeing about what she perceived. She was after all in what Mr. Prager would have to say was a sexual exploitive situation.

It may be the accuser was an evil plotter out to extort money. But this has not been proven. Far more important is the message Prager sent to women who actually are raped, that if they can't prove it that a man of god would viscously name and attack them in the press. How many women did not report rape because of Mr. Prager's actions?

Turning to this particuliar article

In this article he just continues with his shameful mendacity. The Republicans loudly bragged that they were invincible because of the 9-11. And Mr. Prager says nothing bad can help the republicans. There are many more such things but crime and drug abuse are easy to name.

But the real sin of this article is how he denies any legitimacy to the liberal voters. He pretends that it is impossible that blacks or latinos vote for Democrats because they share their values, not because of their problems. After all there many in what republicans like to call the liberal elite , wealthy happy people who vote Democratic. Mr Prager not only disgraces himself but sullies the image of the religious.

Rather lame
Perhaps it is too difficult for Mr Prager to write something original, so he just rehashes the same old stereotypes about the Democrats. Mr Prager should learn the art of conciseness: Democrats bad; Republicans good.

His thesis -- that what's bad for America is good for the Democrats -- is true enough in some circumstances, but it's also true of the Republicans in some circumstances. So what's the point? If the economy had slid into recession before the election of 1996, Clinton might have just been a one termer. Who doubts the stagflation and foreign policy flops of Carter were beneficial for Ronald Reagan?

I find it amusing for Mr Prager to level this charge at the Democrats since President Bush owes his brief, but stellar approval rating after September 11 to the worst terrorist attack in our country's history. Ever since then, however, Bush has been sliding into the muck. I don't doubt that many GOP partisans would like another terrorist attack to resuscitate Bush's declining fortunes before his unpopularity wipes out the Republican Party in a typhoon of disgust in the next election.

like life, america is a great thing
Loyal Democrat,

As a conservative, life is an adventure, and I determine the outcome!

Your interpretation of success as celebratory at the expense of others, maybe true in some instances, but in all candor, it's convoluted and marxist rhetoric....I'm an entrepeneur, and if you'd really like to get into this, we can!

As for your last paragraph, it's classic leftist rhetoric! It's so obvious your utter contempt for this country. Did you honestly come to these conclusions on your own, or did you just get done reading the Communist Manifesto. Or better yet, maybe a collection of Noam Chomsky!

Seriously, if life is such a horrid experience, then what I recommend is listening to Dennis Pragers happiness hour. It airs on Fridays at 1000am to 1100am PST. I'm worried about you and I think this will help...

Old news, Prager.
It has always been that way. It is common knowledge. Nothing can be done about it. It is simply the way it is.

Hell's Party
Whoever said,"God is not a republican, but the devil is a democrat" was pretty close to the truth.

Cornpone
It is easy to see your problem - you hate anything that concerns knowing the differance between right and wrong - typical of a leftist and liberal. Anyone with a brain knows right from wrong. You do not kill someone, you do not rob from someone. Those are easy precepts. Ah, but if you question as you do all the rules showing right and wrong, anything goes and you don't have to follow the rules and you can then rub it in the faces of people who want to do the right thing. It must be difficult, though, to remember when you are allowed to do the right thing and then when it is OK to do the wrong thing, all in the name of doing what you want to.

RIGHT AGAIN!
Open your eyes! Smell the sad and rancid lies of the left! If some of you do not remember that one of the words used to pin the Declartion of Independence was "HAPPINESS" then read it again! If you truly believe that the only way to fight a war is to run home to mommy and cry that you are not getting what you want or cry that not everything is going your way, then I only have one thing to say to you and that is: GROW UP!!!! Of course, We do not live in the prefect world where we can have perfect healt care, drive the $100,000 car, buy or bulid the home of our dreams, or spell correctly! There is one thing that is true about this column and that is HE IS RIGHT and the left is wrong! Here we work hard and get rewarded for it. We are the Greatest Nation because we give evryone who is a good law-abiding person a chance no one else will and wants to! All we ask in return is to follow our laws, pay your taxes , raise like-minded kids and SUPPORT THE MEN AND WOMEN ( of ALL COLORS!) WHO FIGHT FOR THIS GREAT HOME WE CALL AMERICA!

Mr, Prager
Everything you ssaid is right on the money with the exception of this; "the current housing crisis excepted". There is no need for we here at TH to perpetuate this myth. There is no crisis in housing. Prices are falling in some areas, stable in some areas, and actually rising in some areas. Real estate prices have always been about one thing, location. Some locations priced themselves too high during the days of low interest rates. As rates rose the prices had to come down. This happens during every economic cycle with interest rates. What appears to be different about this one is that the interest rates stayed low for a long time. This allowed a lot of people to "forget" that rates always come back up. People stretched themselves out on variable rate loans expecting the days of wine and roses to never end. When they did end they found that they could afford the loan. If this happened in an area where prices were "readjusting" whoever owned that mortagage paper if the loan defaulted lost money.

This represents a very small fraction of the market and it hardly is a crisis. It will only be a "crisis" if the government makes it one.

You have to wonder
what would possess anyone to subscrbe to the ideas of the left, which have proven time and again that they do not work. In fact, they always make the problem worse. Always, all through history. What, aside from sheer ignorance or being educated above one's intelligence, could possibly lead to such dysfunctional beliefs? Please, moonbats, enlighten me.

Militant Leftist
"...the truth can be a very slippery thing. The students may have been innocent. But that does not mean that the accuser was lyeing about what she perceived. She was after all in what Mr. Prager would have to say was a sexual exploitive situation."

You have to be kidding. If this doesn't highlight the hopelessly large gulf in reasoning on the Left versus that on the Right, I don't know what does.

Traditionalist conservatives do not see the truth as a "slippery thing." The truth is the truth. If we don't know it, it's only because we haven't yet gathered enough facts. Don't blame Prager for potential rape victims being persecuted. Place the blame squarely where it belongs: on an individual who chose to level false charges over a sustained period of time, acts which traditionalist conservatives consider "first-degree" (i.e., willful) bad citizenry, if not outright criminality. Enough of this "troubled" BS. It's amazing what people -- even those who are purportedly "troubled" -- can do when they have to and aren't molly-coddled by self-congratulatory liberals such as yourself.

Sheesh
corn pone and militant leftist your remarks prove Prager's point!

The bottom line for me however is that the Republicans are not a good choice either I agree with nearly all the conservative Republican positions, however they have proven beyond a shadow of doubt they can not deliver what they say they stand for! Vote for Joe Oliva or vote for the Libertarian candidate. None of the Republicans deserve to stay in office and I would rather be dead than vote for one single Democrat!

Ron Paul...
...The following is extracted from James Taranto's "Best of the Web Today",Wall Street Journal,13 August.

"On Friday Katharine Q. Seelye of the New York Times posted this dispatch from Iowa on the paper's Web site:

Ron Paul's supporters are actively encouraging Iowa voters to take advantage of Mitt Romney's offers of free transportation to the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames on Saturday and then, once they are there, to vote for Mr. Paul.

"Some say if Mitt is willing to bus Iowans to Ames for the straw poll, they should take him up on his offer!" says a flier in Iowa and on the Internet in advance of the straw poll for the Republican presidential candidates. The flier says that after riding the Romney bus to Ames, and allowing the Romney campaign to pay one's $35 entry fee, Iowans should then carefully weigh their options and "they may decide to vote for Ron Paul."

So how'd it work out for Paul? Although edging out the Thompson twins, he finished fifth, behind Romney, Mike Huckabee (whoever that is), Sam Brownback (whoever that is) and Tom Tancredo (whoever that is).

Maybe Paul would've attracted more voters if he threw in a free lunch."

Single equals liberal?
I find it amusing that Mr. Prager would assume that all single women are liberals.

There are plenty of immature married women, often seen marching in afternoon weekday protests because they have husbands who pay their bills, who are avid supporters and frequently bankrollers of various liberal causes. It's the married women who campaign for employers to be forced to stock breast pumps at work and give Mommy two half-hour breaks per day for the purpose of either pumping or having the Nanny bring the baby to her for breast feeding. It was the married women who campaigned relentlessly for the year off with pay for all who get pregnant. And whenever there is meddling to be done, it is married women crying FORTHECHILDREN who lead the campaign to have everything made safe for unsupervised toddlers.

Single women are busy making a living, and trying hard to keep Mommy from removing all their money and taking up all their time with mandatory overtime (coming soon: a law forbidding bosses to assign overtime to any woman with children under the age of, oh, 30 or so)...

Married women are more likely to be liberal than conservative, because they can afford it.

TTSSYF
One can certainly short change people by having low expectations of people.

But overly high expectations of people are no better. You would be disgusted at someone who told a paraplegic that the reason they couldn't wall was because they were sinful and not trying hard.

Similarly it is cruel to say everyone can succede if they just try hard enough. Peoples abilities fall along normal curve. The majority people are in the middle and small number of people are at both hands.

The small number of people at the lower end just don't have the ability to support themselves because they don't have the abilities to do even mundane tasks.

If you have ever taken the time find out about mental illness, you would know that people with schizophrenia absolutely believe their delusions. With absolute proof they are wrong they can be backed off the story, but will revert back to it later. It's not a matter of effort even the best medicines are of limited effect.

The fact is Mr. Prager was so self righteous about the assumptions of the players but so quick to judge the accuser. If the case against the accuser is so clear, why hasn't she been charged. Mr. Prager's assault on this lady was just judgmental but it was hateful and more than a little misogynistic.

Loyal Democrat
I hope you're just delving into the sarcastic side of your brain. Otherwise I would advise you to avoid all bridges, knives, and/or pharmaceuticals in the near future. I just wish more people would bother to read the 2 most important ideals ever recorded for not only Americans, but for the world. The Declaration of Independence, and the forebearer of that document, the Magna Carta. History is full of people in power taking advantage of the regular Joes and Janes. By ackowledging that even the common person has a right to make pesonal decisions affecting their life, the monumental dream of freedom was born. Now we would willingly give it up, both left and right, for some feel good slogans and a 2 week vacation every year. The Democrats can't get it idealogically together, and the Republicans have become what they have always been reviled to be, arrogant, rich, jerk-wads who care nothing for the plight of those who work hard and live simply. Need proof? Look at the disregard for our pocketbooks both sides of the aisle have shown. Both parties have opened the figurative doors to our home and let the burglars not only come in, but help themselves to our refrigerators, beds, and medicine cabinets. I'm going Libertarian for as long as they espouse true freedom, and if it splits the vote, to bad. There's about a dime's worth of difference between the Ds and the Rs. I have yet to see any candidate that carries more than one issue that I agree on. I happen to be a more-than-one-issue voter. I strongly believe that unless there is a major clean-up of both houses we will never get through this with our American souls intact. Our children will inherit an Orwellian world foist upon them by their cowardly parents. Only courage to vote out a majority of the incumbents will make true changes. We can start with Ted Kennedy.
And now a word from our sponsor: Prozac, the working man's happy pill!

The truth
There may be an absolute truth. But sometimes even all available information does not reveal the truth. In rape cases this was often the case.

The victim can feel that she was too drunk to consent. The accused could feel she was in full possession of her faculties. There can be genuine disagreements amongst the people who witnessed their behaviour at the bar.

A victim may have gotten increasingly uncomfortable during sex and try to stop. She may feel that she made her feelings clear or even said "no". The accused may have misinterpreted her demeanor and/or not heard her objections.

Sex is a very powerful thing that releases a lot of hormones and emotions. It can seriously screw with ones perceptions even if one isn't mentally ill. A current situation can easily be conflated with a flashback of a past situation.

Rape is one of the hardest crimes to judge after the fact. No doubt more people are falsely convicted of rape than of any other crime, maybe all other crimes. And I would suspect rapist are punished less often than any other kind of criminal.

Give 'em enough rope...
Believe it or not, I'm inclined to believe that there is a large slice of truth in what Prager writes (even though it has been written a million times before). But rather than look at himself and fellow conservatives for answers he takes the easy way out and blames those diabolical liberals for all of his woes. Iraq is a quagmire, to use Cheney's chillingly accurate prediciton; Western society is still deeply racist; women do vote for more liberal candidates in general... all of which plays into Democrat hands. But he seems to forget who has been running things for the last 7 years. At the moment it looks like the Republicans are going to get wiped out in the 2008 elections - the Democrats could pick a chimp to run for president next year and it would have a pretty good chance. Whose fault is that? All the Democrats have done is give the Republicans enough rope and they have obliged. Until Republicans accept some blame themselves there can be no moving forward. Prager sounds like a whiny schoolboy, which he is most of the time. A simpleton with a totally simplistic world view based on him being right and everyone else being wrong. What a bore...

"Happy thoughts"
What kind of politician runs on a platform that says "yeah, everything is fine under the current administration, why change it if it ain't broke"? I mean, it's hardly going to win many elections is it? It's totally naive to think that any politician is going to run on anything other than "things can be better if you vote for me". Everyone with their hat in the ring, on both sides of the political fence, believes that America is a great place - but that it can be, and should be, an even better one.

It's called
the party out of power trying to win an election. If you look back at Republican presidential hopefuls in 2000 you'll see the same message: doom and gloom.

From the Heart
Prager dosn't think Libs(Dems) hate America from the heart, but I disagree. One has to be cold hearted and uncaring of others to want Americans to suffer so that the politicians can achieve power. This is as heartless and evil as one can get. The Dem. party is the party of shame.

3 blind mice
The Dems. are like the 3 blind mice. 1) There's been an almost uninterrupted bull market since 1982, but libs. write and talk of nothing except the "losses" to the middle class (one thing they've gained is the AMT--minimum tax law--"designed" to punish millionaires) and the high salaries of CEOs and subprime foreclosures. MORE PEOPLE OWN THEIR OWN HOMES TODAY THAN ANY TIME IN HISTORY. Homeowners are more solid citizens and taxpayers than anyone else. MORE PEOPLE ARE INVESTED IN THE STOCK MARKET THAN ANY TIME, ETC. Pensions and IRAs et. al are all invested in the stock market. Virtally 70 percent of the working population has a direct connection to Wall Street, but Dems. STILL view profit as an enemy.

2) Turning from Wilson, FDR, Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson, current Dems. have become isolationist, xenophonic, US-firsters, a la the protesters against WW II (that they all claim to admire as the "good war"). Libs. (THE ONES SMARTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE) seem blind to the threat of Islamic radical militarism and an unstoppable global economy. In lib. blogs and cols. nationwide, libs. slather over an ignominious defeat in Iraq like a dog with a sirloin. How perverse!!!

3) Dems. haven't had a new idea since FDR, and his ideas were 19th C. European socialist. Reps. of the last few years have not been much better at curbing spending and interferring with Am. citizens' lives, but the Dems. have only had Congress back for eight months, and they are hellbent on spending 100s of billions more monies, raising taxes on almost everything, and seizing huge sectors of the economy like healthcare. They can't run Soc. Sec., buy IRS computers compatible with each other, spend money on highways in the HIGHWAY BILL, or connect the dots on tic-tac-toe.

conclusion
I get to see NEA-liberals upfront almost every day, and as they buy their second retirement home or take their third Med. cruise for the year, all I hear is how bad everything is. If Dems. do produce a rout in 2008, their taxes and top-down management (they always know best) and foreign policy failures will guarantee a Carter ec.: high unemployment, high interest rates, high inflation, energy shortages, military humiliation (they hate the vol. army almost as much as they hated the draft--not that any were in the military or were drafted), and a decade like the late '70s. Won't that be just peachy?

Bitter little people...
Well, we'll see what happy go lucky electioneering the Republicans come up with in 2012 because undoubtedly they will be in opposition by then, trying to win back the White House that the current administration has handed the Dems on a plate. Thankfully the overwhelming majority of the electorate is finrly in the middle of the road. You Townhall zealots had better get used to finding your own views lumped in with those expressed at the Daily Kos, 'cos you are two sides of the same coin...

Hey, cornpone
You said: individuals who are burdened with this ridiculous gothic sense of messianic mission to save the republic from all the socialists, isolationists, nihilists, communists, syndicalists, elitists, humanists, atheists, environmentalists, protectionists,
traitors, ad nauseum.
Well, I for one think that all of these people you've named are the very people we need to be defending America from. And, by the way, Loyal Democrat is a satirist.

the dims strategy
Is the dims stratedy nothing more than reducing every issue to it's worst scenerio so that should they get elected they can employ the latest current cure. We can do it better. The dims seem so sure that the country is in terrible shape and that direction we are going is not in the best interest of the world. But elect either missus clinton or obama and the whole world will come to love us. All international strife will end and domestically the new govt programs we enact will solve everybodies problems. Universal health care, better schools and our nerw 20 million citizens, previously called illegals will benefit us economically and solve the social security and medicare nightmare. The dims approach seems that the american people don't realiz the depth of out problems, but as they have pointed them out, they will solve everything. Just give us your votes. But they are for the most part silent on what these new plans will cost and that's the real problem. There is no free lunch except for the dims who continue to cater to the victim groups they continue to enable

Renny
What, like Bill Clinton did? Erm, yeah, because there was a domestic economic meltdown while he was president, wasn't there? And US foreign policy was an abject failure that resulted in foreign perception of the US falling to its lowest point ever... is my memory serving me right?

$71 trillion in the red?
U.S. government over $71 trillion in the red?

How much longer do you think lawmakers can run up the future liabilities without Americans feeling the credit crunch? How can we have a healthy economy when we are so for in the red?

Prof. Kent Smetters’s testimony before the House Budget Committee (Feb. 17, 2005). He estimated that, as of 2007, the unfunded liability of the U.S. government would be over $71 trillion.

Testimony by Kent Smetters for the Committee on the Budget of The U. S. House of Representatives. Submitted on February 14, 2005, for hearing on February 17, 2005,

Thank you, Chairman Nussle, and members of the Committee for the opportunity to speak on the challenges in meeting the nation’s future obligations in its domestic entitlement programs. While these programs provide vital resources to many American households, these programs also face enormous financial shortfalls during the next several decades.

The purpose of this testimony is three fold. First, it documents the looming financial problems in the nation’s entitlement programs. Second, it demonstrates how the current federal budget framework encourages the U.S. Congress to promise more in the form of future entitlement spending than can actually be afforded; conversely, the federal budget makes it difficult to reduce these unfunded obligations. Third, this testimony shows how various budget frameworks and rules are ineffective at controlling entitlement spending. A new framework is then recommended.

SSGTRET
Yeah, just like they slammed that one on Slick Willy in 1996. At least you are sensible enough to admit that the 2008 presidential election is already a write-off for Republicans...

Hey, MassachusettsLiberal
I say Dems do:
1. Do not support parts of the Patriot Act that help the federal government accomplish its constitutional mandate: to provide for the common defense.
2. Support the troops by telling them to frag their officers, print untrue articles about our atrocities (New Republic), print hundreds of stories about Abu Graib(NYT), print leaks of classified information that make it harder for the troops to do their job: Osama no longer has a sat phone so we can't track him (published by NYT), published how we were tracking financial transactions that fund terrorism (NYT), published NSA wiretapping of foreigners calling into America (NYT). Oh, and never never publish positive stories about Iraq. Just insist that they cut and run and shrug your shoulders about genocide. Oh, and hold up military funding. Yeah, way to go to support the troops.
3. Shove homosexuality into every venue, even into kindergartner classes (Mass.) without allowing parents to remove their kids from those classes (put the father in jail). Violate the law and perform homosexual marriages (Gavin Newsom), try to make homosexuals a protected class with more rights than straights.
4. Refuse to allow anything other than Darwinism to even be mentioned in classrooms. There is no diversity of thought allowed in liberalville!
5. Use the arts to constantly undermine what makes America great. Hollywood movies, religious art with rhino dung on it, pi**Christ, yeah, great art. And Sean Penn has a great sense of humor.
6. What does cage elections mean? Minority voting rights means insisting on no requirement for identification so illegals and felons can vote.
7. Are you kidding? The Dems invented deficit spending and growing government. Remember Roosevelt?
8. That's the first time I've heard conservatives accused of being lazy. Know how to govern? How about the House vote where the Repubs won but the Dems pulled a fast one and declared Repubs had lost?
You are a tool.

Hey Randy
I don't know how old you are but I suspect there aren't many people contributing to this who remember Roosevelt...

1. Freedom and LIBerty: Do not support parts of the Patriot Act that curtail Consitutional Rights
The Patriot Act cutails NO ONES civil rights.
( Are you making phone calls to Al Quida?)
2. Military: Support bringing troops home and support for veterans.
You don't support the veterans. Are you willing to accept the consequences for what happens when we leave Iraq?
3. Civic society: Support human rights for gays and lesbians.
gays and lesbians have the same civil rights as everyone else. We don't believe they should have "seperate or exclusive"" rights.
4. Education: Support science over ideology.
You support self esteem training over math and science education.
5. Arts: Liberals are more creative and have a sense of humor
You're right. That staement is hysterical.
6. DEMocracy: Support minority voting rights and do not cage elections.
Support, yes, create additional rights, no. We do not pay attention to proven false claims of voter fraud. Proven fraud by democrats are a fact.No election has ever been "caged".
7. Federal Budget: Support reducing the size of government and do not support deficit spending.
You are right about that sense of humor, you are a riot!!!!!
8. Government: Know how to govern, are not lazy, and make the correct decisions.
The only thing I can see that Dem's can do is appoint special prosecuters and go fishing.

Militant Leftist says re the Duke case..
"She was after all in what Mr. Prager would have to say was a sexual exploitive situation."

SHE WAS A STRIPPER! Of course she was in "a sexual exploitive situation."

DUH!

Militant Leftist also fails to point out that the accuser had the DNA of several other men in her system and she also had a past record of false accusations.

evidently thinks that leftist ideology is the best for running the country. I challenge him or her to give us examples of leftist programs that have proven successful. All I can see is a limitless supply of my hard-earned tax money flying away, a long list of entitlements that will bankrupt us eventually, and countless lives ruined by the "War on Poverty". Leftist ideas have always failed to produce the paradise they guarantee, what makes you think your team can change that fact?

loudandproud , don't worry ...
... Loyal Democrat is an amazingly skilful satirist. He doesn't really mean it.

libs and taxes
I wonder how happy the lib masses will be when the new govt programs and higher taxes all advocated by missus clinton and obama prevent them from taking the new vacation, buying that new car, buying a new house or fancier clothes because their money has been transferred to congress in their zeal to redistribute our wealth. Everything that comes from wash is under budgeted and ends up costing far more than those in congress envision. The solution is less taxes and force congress to live on a decreasing budget. Let congress sacrifice spending binges and stop the porkbarrel spending they feel they were elected to do.

the dims main problem: they don;t trust the people to make good choices. We must allow govt to make our decisions, they are far wiser

Embracing Turmoil Not New 4 Left
__Their electoral hopes, and aspirations, are of turmoil, and turbulance. As it is "difficult to name any positive development for America that would benefit the Democratic Party's",it is also difficult to name any positive development the left ideal has made for America. To hear those, who embrace their liberal providers,America is full of racist, greedy, gun toting vigilanties, who could care less about fellow Americans, the world society. The liberal left, with factions in tow, have secured their power, and wealth,on personal turmoil, and individual passion.Disaster, turmoil, and turbulance, draws a crowd, has spectators view the calamity according to their passions. The left has learned to play these passions for individual prosperity, while securing individual prosperity. It's called DIVIDING the UNION! Their person civil war, recruiting, and collecting,a union of separatist with singular expectations.A civil war that blinds this society of its responsibility to this republic, and those oppressed throughout the world.

Keep it up
You've got four years of whining coming up once the 2008 election is over, you might as well all start practising now... and considering the amount of money the curent administration is spending, which makes Clinton's budgets pale in significance and has resulted in deficits that generations to come will be paying for, it's a little rich to warn about the catastrophe that awaits us when the dems take over. Government spending can't get any worse than it is at the moment...

WOW The whole gang has twisted knckers
"First, there is no equivalent list of bad things happening to America that benefits Republicans. Second, everything written here about the Democrats -- except about the Iraq War, which was not taking place then -- could have been written when Democrat Bill Clinton was president."

Oh my let me just ask one question. I think something like it was asked by one of your false gods. Is the country better off now than it was 25 years ago?

Phylo...
without wishing to cast aspersions on our fellow townhall readers, "I think you get the point" might be wishful thikning... they'll never get a point that attempts some sort of balance because that would mean removing their collective heads from the sand... but good luck trying!

Critical Bill consider the earmarks!
__Millions in liberally applied earmarks that should never have happened.Of course this liberal left majority is so concerned with the national deficit,a million here,a million there, for personal district benefit,is no big deal.I guess that money couldn't be used to pay down the deficit.

Militant Leftist
Your post is the perfect example of the leftist confusion between "feeling" and thought.

Either a woman is drunk or she is not. And if she *thinks* that she might do something she'll regret while she's drunk its her responsibility to avoid becoming drunk in a potentially hazardous situation.

Either a woman says "No," or she does not. If she changes her mind after consenting to sex she is responsible for saying, loudly, clearly, and unmistakably, "No. Stop now. I changed my mind." If she does not do so the man is fully justified in believing that her initial consent remains in effect.

What she "feels" about her actions after the fact is irrelevant. What matters is what actions she actualy took. And if she'd *thought* first rather than just *felt* she probably wouldn't have been in the regrettable situation in the first place.

Though even a whore has the right to say "No," as long as she refunds the money, that doesn't absolve women from the responsibility for their own choices. And if tomorrow they feel that the choice they made was a bad one they need to learn the lesson to not do it again rather than cry victim and pretend that they never made the choice in the first place.

Definitions ~
Militant Leftist ~ you have a strange definition of "Lady" referring to the Duke accuser. What is your definition of "prostitute"?

...Good for Democrats
"After women marry, they are more likely to abandon leftist views and to vote Republican. And if they then have children, they will vote Republican in even more lopsided numbers". I guess you never interviewed my wife.
At least her views never affected my children!

Expound Truth
Are you trying to tell me that earmarking is a monopoly controlled by democrats? What, Ted Stevens is a democrat all of a sudden is he? Come off it - earmarks are abused by both sides. Not that I don't agree with you, but earmarking ain't a partisan problem. They're all guilty!

70 Percent, Wrong Direction
And if the Democrats were to suddenly succeed at something Prager? Seems to me that Republicans have painted themselves into a failure corner and are required to hope that every Democratic policy fails, regardless of the merits of the actual program. What if the Democrats, who represent American in Congress, did something successful Prager? Who is really counting on failure of America?

70 percent of Americans believe that America is heading in the wrong direction. And the Republican party keeps promoting that direction. Seems to me Republicans are selling failure as success. Republicans are not understanding why that lump of Christmas coal bonus isn't making the American people happy about the economy.

Let me see if I can do this.

"I am not saying that in their hearts all Republicans want Democrats to always fail, even when in power, or want Democrats to remain mentally diseased, or Americans to believe rosy economically propaganda in favor of their real world experience, or fewer Democratic voters to be informed, or Democrats to be wrong in Iraq, or foreign nations to hate us.

But what most Republicans want in their hearts is not the issue. The issue is that if Republicans want to win, they can do so only if bad things happen to Democrats."

No one wants American failure more than Republicans when Democrats are in power, ergo Republican attacks on Clinton back when America did believe it was heading in the right direction, as opposed to the 70% who believe the opposite today.

Clinton had to be a Democratic failure, an American failure. Republicans set a precedent by having an American President be sued in civil court while sitting in office.

If there is a party that not only relies on failure to the point of desparation, it is the Republican party. Republicans cannot get elected without the Karl Rove, Ann Coulter politics of personal destruction.

Militant Leftist writes:
"...it is cruel to say everyone can succede if they just try hard enough. Peoples abilities fall along normal curve. The majority people are in the middle and small number of people are at both hands."

The above quote encapsulates the essential belief of the Left that human beings are helpless pawns of fate, economics, racism, genetics, or whatever. The cosmic forces changes, but the essential rap that individual people are helpless puppets , this time of statistical cosmic forces, does not.

Unlike the Left, conservatives of every stripe are the only humanists left in the world, or people who subscribe to a belief in both the actual and potential good nature of people - regardless of where they came from, while Leftists do not.

Critical Bill
Methinks thou hast counted your chickens very early within the cycle. As for earmarks, the Republicans did not campaign on the issue promising to reform the process and be the "most ethical congress" in history. Most US citizens know that politicians are liars but when one of your center-piece platform slogans is proven to be a lie in less than 6 months of operation it tends to reduce support for the Party. The Republicans lost in 06 because the party platform was abandoned so that most of the Republicans became Democrat-Lite. A large part of the Republican Base stayed home.

Now the Dems are p*ssing on their base and demonstrating to the independents that their platfoem was a lie. Congress's approval ratings are at the lowest point in history.

Hey it could be an interesting election in 08. What will happen if BOTH main party's base stays at home. Will it be a tossup between the Libritarians and the American Communist Party? Of course if the Communists take it it would be the same as the Democrats.

prager
Although I tend to agree with him,I think he is wrong to lump all dems together. Many are not as liberal as their party leaders. The dems had a good chance to improve their image,if they would have tried to fix ss instead of all those stupid investigations

This is nothing new for dems
Remember Pres. Carter in his infamous sweater sitting by the fireplace talking about "the national malaise"? He didn't last long.

Those of you on the last 10 or so respnses are getting a way from ideas and into insults. Not very productive.

Victimhood
Most of the libes didn't deal with the substance of what was written, just that Prager is wrong, evil (surprised I didn't see "just like Hitler").

Democrats have to have some groups see themselves as perpetual victims. Even recent comments about the surge Sen Clyburn on good news about the surge in essence saying success could be bad for the Democrats. What kind of garbage is that?

Black (like myself)that stray of the plantation are vilified and insulted, see Michael Steele and what was done to him, Condi, Clarence Thomas and many others.

White liberals see minorities (especially blacks) as unable to succeed with out hand outs and help from them.

All are guilty,but...
...in times of turbulance, which ideology buckles down? Which ideology takes proven steps to correct the problem, and which liberally speculates? Looks like the ideology of speculators won, personally securing their interest, with power secure in the hands of the democrat majority.A once proud party held accountable by "We the people",but now controlled by individual factions securing personal possessions.America needs to hold all of their representation accountable at all times. To argue it,happened before is pointless, has it proves,"We the people",were not correcting the problem. This is why we are a republic. The people, united, see the needs of community, state, and nation, and act accordingly, to fulfill those needs.

I can't argue with Prager
This article is conceived and constructed in such a way that the points are inarguable. Absolutely brilliant! I don't AGREE with him but I have to be honest; the writing demonstrates great skill.

Besides, if you Lazy Liberals would get a job with Health Insurance, you could get a better deal on Drugs. Something Liberals ALWAYS Love!

The democrat mind set
Just like Loyal Democrat writes, most all of the Dems I know see the glass half empty. Many of them seem to be full of hate, and just can't see all the good things going on around them. We have never had it so good in America. Yes there will always be issues that must be addressed, but that is what makes live exciting and interesting. We have the best health care in the world, the ecomony has been steady and strong for several years, we are at almost full employment, we have the terrorist on the run, and there has been no attacks on U.S. soil since 911. The stock market, even with adjustments, has put millions in the money with 401-ks and retirement plans. Americans as a rule feel good about the future, as we should. The democrats feel they grain and hold power by causing a division in the population, blacks against whites, hispanics against blacks and whites, women against men, rich against poor, union vs non-uunion. Their goal is to hold on to power. The war in Iraq has given them a rope to craw back out of the hole that Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter dug..

Dennis,
Looks like you hit a nerve with the Libs. Keep up the good work.

"There is NO government program that has EVER been run on budget or very efficiently."

Hmmm WWII went pretty well what was it a ship a day'? The Marshall Plan worked very well. The Cold War went pretty well.

Like so many here you use the perfect to destroy the good. Get real for the last 20 plus years you have proven that conservatism is a failed philosphy ranking right up there with communism. Guess what America now sees it

the flip side, that's all
Prager writes: "First, there is no equivalent list of bad things happening to America that benefits Republicans. Second, everything written here about the Democrats....could have been written when Democrat Bill Clinton was president."

That is FALSE on both counts.

As for Prager's first point: During the Clinton 1990s, social conservatives got a lot of political hay by charging that the country was slipping into immorality and licentiousness. Remember Bork's book "Slouching Toward Gomorrah"? The Republicans have scored political points against Democrats by charging that America had become a moral cesspool, with rampant abortion and out of wedlock pregnancy and same-sex marriage and so on. And they blamed Democrats for allowing it to happen.

And Republicans are still doing it. The GOP base insists on regarding an influx of Hispanic immigrants only as a threat. Even LEGAL Hispanic immigrants are viewed negatively by many social conservatives who worry that too many Hispanics will dilute America's existing culture.

As for Prager's second point, under Clinton most Democrats (except the far left) went along with Clinton's economic policies because they seemed to work, giving us economic prosperity with a balanced Federal budget. Unlike 2008 in which the GOP isn't even sure they can run on Bush's record, in 2000 nearly all Democrats wanted Al Gore to continue the Clinton legacy, at least in the economic sphere.

In 2000, it was Republicans whom the Democrats accused of "talking down the economy." Then, as now, the GOP has flatly refused to admit that Clinton left office with the U.S. economy in better shape than it had been when he entered office. Or, they insist that such improvement would either have happened anyway or was due to his precedecessor (the same dodges that Democrats had used to refuse to give Reagan any credit).

Liberals astound me
After reading the BS from the Liberals posted above, I am astounded. Anyone with half a mind and the will to research all the facts will come to the conclusions that the Liberal Picture is Lies. I have never met a Conservative who switched to being a Liberal, however, I have met hundreds of Liberals who switched to become Conservative. Most honest Americans will recognize the weaknesses within their party and attempt to correct the issues. The GOP has its problems, but the Demonrats and Liberals are a joke. Just look at their recent actions, and actions speak louder then words, King Admentment, Specials Union Elections, Lack of support for military, attempts to tie the Military hands concerning equipment and who and when they can be sent whereever, attempts by this Congress to make Earmarks even less Transparent, Their Budget busting bills and even more, refusal to support School Vouchers, saving Social Security, Voter Fraud, attacking the Patriot Act which has no bearing on Americans inside the USA and they know it, and a whole lot more. With the GOP verify and stay active, with the Demonrats don't ever trust. They are destroying this Great Country one day at a time.

Here we go lie after lie after lie.

What part of it is over don't you understand? Republicans are fleeing their party in record numbers and the military is rapidly shifting to supporting the Democratic Party. Argue and lie allow want but your are as disconnected from realty as you were when you tried to shove Schiavo down our throats or it is all New Orleans fault. No one believes it any more go talk to your neighbors let some sun light in.

If its good for America....
Then Its Bad for Republicans..?

the whole premise for Mr. Pragers article is that only the republican/conservative agenda
is positive for America and the democrats agenda
is negative is total bs.

I'd say midterm elections 06 proved this point to be totally wrong and with dems poised to regain the whitehouse and retain control of congress in 08, expect to hear more excuses and whining from repub/cons press an politicians..

Blaming the media for their political problems is disengenuous and a diversion from the truth, that being that:

The republican party has no one to blame for their current state of internal division and
unpopularity than themselves and mostly their
misguided President. In other words they shot their ownselves in the foot.

Democrat Party = Terror
I hate the Special interest pathologies of the Democrat party.

The Special interests are so dominant that I classify the Democrats as the right arm of all Muslim Terror and domestic terror in the area of destroying the first amendment's free speech.

EVIL now fits the Democrat Party. They are a threat to this nations very existence.

They doth protest too much!
The FACT, NOT opinion, of the matter is that Democrats MUST rely on bad times. This is the basis of their ideology.

Democrats believe that the problem for every social ill is government intervention. Some people can't afford health insurance? Well, lets create a massive government bureaucracy to provide them with "free" health insurance. Some people don't earn very much money? Lets create another massive government bureaucracy to provide them with "free" money.

Every single perceived problem in all of existence has only one solution, according to Democrats: more government.

What happens, though, if everyone up and decides that the Democrats' perception of what is and is not a problem is flawed? Well, they stop voting Democrat, that's what.

Democrats MUST conjure up all sorts of mythical "problems" that they must be elected in order to "solve".

Oh, too many go without health insurance!! "Free" health insurance for everyone!! Who cares if the vast majority of those without health insurance do so not because they can't afford it, but because they feel they don't need it!

Oh, too many schools are failing to teach our kids! More money for the schools! Who cares if private schools spend a tiny fraction of what public schools spend, yet produce better students!

If people instead looked in the mirror instead of holding their hands out, saying "gimmie, gimmie, gimmie", the Democratic Party wouldn't exist. That's why Democrats are constantly coming up with new excuses for people to stick their hands out and say "gimmie, gimmie, gimmie".

Critical Bill writes

This is the whole goal of Leftists. If Americans do not know our history, then the Left can make it up to seize power and establish a Union of Socialist Republics, or the Peoples Republic of America, or the American Democratic Republic. All of these are great examples of Leftist doctrine bringing prosperity to their citizens and guaranteeing the rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

For those of you who recently graduated from public schools, the above refer to the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), the PRC (Peoples’ Republic of China), and the DDR (German Democratic Republic-Deutche Demokratische Rubublik in German).

Bad for America = good for politicians.
A better article would have been "If it's bad for America, it's good for politicians".

A scan of the above posts makes it clear that the lowliest element of our society has managed to obtain and retain power by keeping the citizens at each others' throats. The politicians adhere to the principle of divide and conquer very well, and like the dumb sheep they take us for, we choose to lash out at each other rather than purge ourselves of the filth that infests our high offices on both sides of the aisle.

Proof is easily found. Take election 2004, Kerry vs. Bush. Those were the two men that we as a nation found worthy to vie for the power to lead us? That was the best that both parties could offer?

While we bicker over which candidate has the most character flaws (and it is indeed hard to count that high), those that are pulling the strings are selling us down the river. But we are too busy fighting with each other to take notice and root out the cause.

RE: Phylo
As has been pointed out at least 100 billion times already (though you are obviously too fact-challenged to accept it), life expectancy has ZIPPO to do with the quality of health care, you moron.

Our lower life expectancy is mostly a result of our life style. We shovel more McDonald's junkfood in our mouth than the entire rest of the planet, for example.

That we "pay more" is mostly a result of our subsidizing the health care for the rest of the world. For example, nearly every other nation on the planet has price caps on prescription drugs. Also note that you can count the number of drug companies based outside the US on one hand because only in the United States are they allowed to pay for research and development of drugs through their pricing, a practice that is banned outright in most of the rest of the world.

Next, the only European nations that have had consistently higher GDP than the US have been the developing, mostly ex-Soviet bloc nations, you twit. To claim that that means anything at all is absurd. These nations are coming from rock bottom. They have a LONG ways to grow, whereas the US economy is the world's envy.

Finally, if you were actually LITERATE, I'd tell you to actually go READ the last NIE report (the parts that are declassified). In that report, they did NOT say "very clearly that Al Queda is now back to pre 9/11 strength and is benefiting from the war in Iraq". Quite to the contrary, they said that al Qaida-proper -- that is the al Qaida that is headed by OBL -- is essentially defunct, but that essentially a bunch of copy-cats who call themselves al Qaida have emerged in Iraq. The NIE report also said that the "surge" is pushing even these leaderless copycats out, though they still pose a threat.

Does Party Triumph Trump the Gospel?
One thing most troubling about "Christians" in politics is that many promise they will not permit their faith to influence their decisions. (This was a key element in JFK's overcoming the fear of Americans the "Pope would rule America if Kennedy were elected.)

But I can't help but wonder about II John 9-11, saying that Christians should not wish God speed to those who do not abide by the doctrine of Christ, that those who do are partaking of his evil deeds. In my opinion, voting for or giving money to politicians who promote evil (abortion, sexual perversion, pornography, etc.) are doing more than just wishing them "God speed." They are aiding and abetting them.

The "doctrine of Christ" is all-encompassing, not a Christian buffet from which we may choose what we like and ignore everything else.

Whatever your political party, I think it wise of people who claim to be Christians to think about just what they are voting for. Principle should come before party or pocketbook.

Opposition Party vs Incumbent Party
Gee, Dennis, you've really developed a new and revolutionary concept here!

It seems the Opposition Party campaigns on the perceived failures of the Incumbent Party. Is this what you're trying to say, Dennis?

Examples might be how Eisenhower ran on the Korean War; Nixon ran on Vietnam and Law & Order; Reagan ran on the Iran Hostage crisis and inflation; Bush ran on restoring morals and piety to the White House.

Here's some breaking news: The Pope is Catholic. Bears defecate in the Woods. Dennis Prager belabors the obvious.
