Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Perhaps the major reason Jews have been able to keep their national identity alive for 3,000 years, the last 2,000 of which were nearly all spent dispersed among other nations, is ritual. No national or cultural identity can survive without ritual, even if the group remains in its own country.

Americans knew this until the era of anti-wisdom was ushered in by the baby boomer generation in the 1960s and '70s. We always had national holidays that celebrated something meaningful.

When I was in elementary school, every year we would put on a play about Abraham Lincoln to commemorate Lincoln's Birthday and a play about George Washington to commemorate Washington's Birthday. Unfortunately, Congress made a particularly foolish decision to abolish the two greatest presidents' birthdays as national holidays and substituted the meaningless Presidents Day. Beyond having a three-day weekend and department store sales, the day means nothing.

Columbus Day is rarely celebrated since the European founding of European civilization on American soil is not politically correct.

Christmas has become less nationally meaningful as exemplified by the substitution of "Happy Holidays" for "Merry Christmas."

Memorial Day should be a solemn day on which Americans take time to honor those Americans who fought and died for America and for liberty. But, again, fewer and fewer Americans visit military cemeteries just as fewer communities have Memorial Day festivities.

We come, finally, to tomorrow, the mother of American holidays, July Fourth, the day America was born. This day has a long history of vibrant and meaningful celebrations. But it, too, is rapidly losing its meaning. For example, look around tomorrow -- especially if you live in a large urban area -- and see how few homes display the American flag. For most Americans it appears that the Fourth has become merely a day to take off from work and enjoy hot dogs with friends.

Our national holidays were established to commemorate the most significant national events and individuals in our history; they now exist primarily to provide us with a day off. This was reinforced by the nation's decision to shift some of the holidays to a Monday -- thereby losing the meaning of the specific date in order to give us a three-day weekend.

National memory dies without national ritual. And without a national memory, a nation dies. That is the secret at the heart of the Jewish people's survival that the American people must learn if they are to survive.

When Jews gather at the Passover Seder -- and this is the most widely observed Jewish holiday -- they recount the exodus from Egypt, an event that occurred 3,200 years ago. We Americans have difficulty keeping alive the memory of events that happened 231 years ago.

How have the Jews accomplished this? By the ritual of the Passover Seder. Jews spend the evening recounting the Exodus from Egypt -- and as if it happened to them. In the words of the Passover Haggadah -- the Passover Seder book -- "every person is obligated to regard himself as if he himself left Egypt." The story is retold in detail, and it is told as if it happened to those present at the Seder, not only to those who lived it 3,200 years ago.

That has to be the motto of the July Fourth Seder. We all have to retell the story in as much detail as possible and to regard ourselves as if we, no matter when we or our ancestors came to America -- were present at the nation's founding in 1776.

The Seder achieves the feat not only through detailed recitation of the story, but through engaging the interest of the youngest of those at the table (indeed, they are its primary focus), through special food, through song and through relevant prayer. Obviously, just as secular Jews tend to avoid the prayer part of the Haggadah, so, too, secular Americans are free to avoid the prayer part of an American Seder Book.

But someone -- or many someones -- must come up with a July Fourth Seder. A generation of Americans with little American identity -- emanating from little American memory -- has already grown into adulthood. The nation whose founders regarded itself as the Second Israel must now learn how to survive from the First.

How to contact Mr. Prager?
Mr. Prager, if you or your staff read these comments, please know that I have completed the Independence Day Hagadah that you implicitly called for in the article above. I have written e-mails to you and your staff using 3 e-mail addresses 10 times so far without any acknowledgement. I have called your show twice, including today, when your screener hung up. The question that remains at this point is whether you were serious in the column above. What was the point of writing it and calling for the "July Fourth Seder" if you are not willing to examine this document? I produced exactly what you asked for and I am confident that you would enjoy it. Were you being sincere, sir, or not?

Independence Day Hagadah now complete
For the record, and much to the chagrin of the anti-Semitic pygmies that swarm over this site, I have completed writing the Independence Day Hagadah proposed in Mr. Prager's article. I am proud of it. It is patriotic, solemn and festive. I have tried to communicate with Mr. Prager and his staff about this for more tahn one week, but they have not acknowledged my messages. This is frustrating, because I know how important the project is to Mr. Prager. I still await his reply.

Hans
Thanks for the dialogue. Hope you change your mind, as you surely hope I will change mine. My patriotism remains very deep, and is a major motivation (second to my faith) in wanting my beloved country to be better. It is very disappointing to reach my senior years and become a bit cynical about those in power here in the USA.

And I'm not a liberal Democrat. My family has been Republican since 1856 - that is, my maternal side, 'old Yankees' of Puritan stock who came to MA in 1639. Their grandparents had fled Belgium and the Inquisition and gone to England once they had embraced Protestantism. The French side came to Montreal area by 1663 - that was the year of the first recorded marriage on the French side. Lots of names in that lineage, among them Cordier, Martin, Ducharme, Begnoche, Lucier, Lasalle, Fortin, etc. etc.

Yes, I was jailed as a Freedom Rider in 1961 and again while working with Dr. King in 1962. Sadly, many too many conservatives tried to stop the advance toward broader freedom in this nation. I'm still shocked that you sympathized with Franco, who scoffed at real freedom. And that you believe in Catholic Church domination of society. I don't see how that is compatible with your apparent commitment to racial equality. Freedom is freedom.

You may be interested to know that I follow a rather conservative code of personal ethics, part of my Protestant heritage. Never drank or smoked. Observe the Christian Sabbath quite strictly. Etc. But also strongly favor equal rights for all.

But enough of all that. God bless. Keep well and happy.

Too
Roy, yes, I have many more important things to do. God Bless you in your fight to help end racial discrimination; that is indeed a yeoman's job. The spelling jabs were not directed at you, but the philistine who calls himself Grateful American. We agree on some good points, and I meant no insult labeling you as a neo con. I do not think at this time, in this forum, we will agree on theology. You appear to have years on me(I'm 37) and have many more life experiences to share, which I am better for having read. Vatican II is the ultimate cause of the low turnout in Quebec and western Europe. How sad. Quebec's population is expected to be halved by 2025! Something about big families and Catholic social teaching that keeps cultures going . . . Hmmmm! My wife's family's name is Brenoit, I think. Have a wonderful weekend. I am of to Mass.

Hans
Don't really know why I'm continuing this. I really have more important things to do.

Yes, your wife and I could be related. Since there were not that many in New France when the British took over, most French-Canadians are related through intermarriage etc. And I'm part Native American - as many French-Canadians are. My family left Quebec in part because they became Protestant and Grandma used to say: "The English looked down on us because we were French, and the French treated us like lepers because we had become Protestant." When they moved to the USA this problem quickly ended.

A few random comments. The last thing I am is a neocon. I consider the neocon crowd dangerous. They were major pushers for the Iraq War and many of them now urge us to bomb Iran!

I disagree completely with your sweeping analysis of the Civil War. War is a tragedy, no matter what. But there were cruelties on both sides. One of my kin died at Andersonville. Another was at Libby prison. Fortunately, he survived but returned home a human skeleton and never had good health thereafter. He was 18 when he was captured in Md after Gettysburg. To many of us, of course, the Civil War was about slavery. Union soldiers didn't sing "as He died to make men holy let us die to make men free" with something else in mind. (I was jailed twice as a young man, over 45 years ago in the deep South, battling racial discrimination. So, hm, I guess I have grown up already.)

As I indicated, I appreciate some aspects of modern Catholicism, though I am a liberal Protestant. If Catholicism changed more (permitted marriage of clergy, cut out the transubstantiation superstition, cut back on the adulation of the Pope, brought Mariology and Saint adoration under control, permitted more freedom of expression. allowed greater democracy in church government, etc) maybe Christians could reunite. But that won't happen soon.

I guess I didn't realize that I was such a poor speller. Gee, and I won many spelling bees many decades ago. But I don't always take the time to read over everything carefully. Very sorry if that offended you. I know how major a sin it is. I believe that it is Ann Coulter and not Anne Coulter. A thoroughly rude woman. Which reminds me of the popular legend that St. Anne was the grandmother of Jesus. Where is that in scripture? Assume you have been to Ste. Anne de Beaupre north of Quebec City. On my last visit I asked the guide what percentage of Quebec Catholics now attend mass regularly. His answer even shocked me: 7%! That's seven percent! What is happening to the RC Church? Is God asleep at the switch? What about that vast army of guardian angels? Maybe they should be fired for incompetence.

Sherman, Hitler, Grateful Amer. et. al
First things first--I am not a patriot--do not claim to be, do not want to be; I claim no allegiance to the American flag or the United States. Um, Sherman leveled cities and towns in Mississippi, too. So, even if not true, by your tone, you feel he was a great patriot because he was nice up to the point of shelling civilians in Atlanta(not South Carolina)? You Americanist neo-cons are living in denial or are so deceived: Sherman, Grant, and Sheridan killed, raped, and pillaged hundreds of towns and thousands of innocent men, women and children. The soldiers raped and killed many black women and slaves, all in the full knowledge of the first American Caesar. This is something to be proud of? Destroying an entire culture in the name of union solidarity? The Thirty-years' War is lamentable, but if there had been no Reformation, there would have been no war. Simple cause and effect. OK, so the moment you have been waiting for--tick, tock, tick, tock--nooo, I am not an admirer of Hitler or Mussolini. Just like Lincoln, they were too belligerent and expansive. I also have this thing for not wanting to wipe people off the face of the earth(I'm Polish). Sarcasm aside, it is convenient for modern Nazis to use the fight against Bolshevism as a rallying cry and as an apologist defence. Nope. Not no Nazi, brother. I got kids, some of whom are black and brown and yellow and white(all via adoption). Roy, I dearly and truly admire your intelligence, but please stop putting traditional Roman Catholics and muslims in the same category. Just because I believe in government being subserviant to the Church does not make me a foaming-at-the-mouth-rabid killer. As I have stated before and will state in the unchangeable Church doctrine(and language): Extra Ecclesian nula Salus. I have not forgotten that Luther was a monk. I also have not forgotten that he was a wicked and cruel individual(read what he said about Jews). Broken world, broken people. I freely admit the Church in Luther's time as a human institution was scandalous, as it is today. However, you are once again a victim of anti-Catholic bigotry. You are reading history through the lens of rabid anti-Catholic protestant historians. What tyranny? If things were so bad for peasants in Catholic, medieval Europe, how did the West become so formidable? Look at the art, music, and agriculture just to name a few. Do you like beer? Thank the monks. What about the German and Swiss furniture makers and tinkerers and musicians and painters? How did people meet and fall in love and have children if they were in virtual prisons? Think about it. Anyway, the groups you may be refering to are called sedevacantists(seat of Peter is vacant). Canon law dictates that a heretic can't be a Pope, therefore those who claim to be (current) Popes are not Popes because they are heretics. I do not fall into this camp. I believe that Cardinal Ratzinger is Benedict the XVI. However, I do not agree with Vatican II. This has led to the debacles we have today: cultural marxism. When the most powerful institution the world has ever known lightens up and attempts to change, then the sheeple will start making morals relative. My wife is French Canadian. We could be related. Yeah, uh, Grateful American, um, we all make mistakes, brother, but I would employ the use of a spell check. And, as I said above, I'm Polish and lost many relatives--all Catholic--to the SS. Thanks to Hitler, I am now in this God-forsaken country. Please stop trying to be like the neo-con poster girl(it would be one ugly poster, by the way), Anne Coulter. Grow up and learn to spell. G.A.

HANS
Bavaria is a fitting place for a NATZI like yourself. It would be returning to your roots. GOOD RIDANCE!

Hm! Hans is a bit wild for me
I guess I'm much more of a patriot than you are. I think of the USA as the world's greatest country, even though my patriotism leads me to object strongly to some of our policies. I had ancestral grandfathers both at Bunker Hill (a drummer boy) and at Gettysburg, so my US roots run very, very deep. (Sherman was quite kind to most of the South until he reached SC, the first state to secede, certainly kinder than rival groups in the earlier religious wars.) Both paternal and maternal sides came to the New World (US and Canada) in the 1600s - paternal side was French-Canadian Catholic, by the way.

You sound a lot like those Muslim extremists who want Islam to run the state and impose shariah law. Only, you want pre-Vatican II Catholicism to run things. Thank God there aren't very many of you these days in the RC Church.

I've run into a couple of Catholics who believe that with John XXIII apostasy took over the Vatican, that the Masons and Jews sabotaged true Catholicism, that even Benedict XVI is apostate, etc. Are you affiliated with one of these splinter groups? I'm not familiar enough with them to recall their various names.

You didn't respond to my query as to whether or not you thought Hitler and Mussolini were admirable. I'm curious. Many western Catholics, as you know, thought that the Axis was a bulwark against Bolshevism, an avid enemy of Catholicism. These included some Irish Catholics whose anti-British feelings overshadowed everything else. And Catholic priests, as I remember, ran Hitler-puppet regimes in Slovakia and perhaps Croatia. Details elude me somewhere, but I'm sure you're acquainted with that history.

PS Don't forget that Luther was a Catholic monk. So you deny that the church had become quite corrupted by 1517? If the church had treated him intelligently, instead of ordering him killed, perhaps the Reformation never would have happened. I am not especially a Luther admirer, but he did begin a good thing that freed Europe (and later the USA) from the tyranny of the 'one true church' nonsense.

Moving
Roy, yes, I have thought of moving to another country. Where? I don't know. Maybe Poland or Bavaria in Southern Germany. Maybe Chile, Nicaragua, or El Salvador, where all abortion in illegal. It is nice that we are able to agree on a anti Iraq war platform. Maybe we can both focus our prayers on a peaceful and quick end to this epic blunder. Have you been to Spain recently? I have heard that it is a cesspool of pornography and bad living. They are contracepting their way out of existence. Is it coincidence that the western European countries who have given us so much tradition(with church/state union) now are exponentially dying out? Why is that? Thanks to original sin, we live in a broken and confused world, with competing ideologies. Those Catholics whom you thank are in error, as are all protestants, muslims and other religions. Luther was a flunky and a foul-mouthed, scatalogically obsessed demon whose fruits have condemned millions of people. God set up a hierarchy for us to follow. Liberalism is the fruit of death, my dear brother. Where can I find the writings from St. Thomas(about heretics)? Please understand one thing about me: I am in no way a pugnacious individual. I believe in peace at all costs. However, as St. John wrote in the Apocalypse(3;19): "Such as I love, I rebuke and chastise. Be zealous therefore, and do penance." I have a zeal to bring everyone to grace; it is my duty as a Christian. I will not do it by the sword or a bomb, but with prayers and steadfast disagreement with the legacies of protestatism and the most hypocritical, murderous country the world has ever know: The United States.

"Israel lobby" and Iraq
God, is there no end to this stupidity? Once more, with feeling:

American Jews oppose the Iraq war more than the general population.

Various pro-Zionist hawks have consistently said that they saw Iran as a much bigger threat than Iraq.

Nevertheless - Saddam Hussein shot at American planes patrolling the (legally constituted) no-fly zone; conspired to assassinate President George H. W. Bush; sheltered international terrorists such as Abu Nidal and Abu Abbas who had murdered Americans; financed Palestinian-Arab terror, which took the lives of American citizens; and in his genocide of 180,000 or so Kurds, employed chemical weapons, which are WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

I'm so sorry to interrupt you anti-Semites with mere facts. Now, back to your kook conspiracy theories.

George Washington's Birthday
A small correction Dennis, regarding George Washington's Birthday, and Abraham Lincoln's Birthday.

Lincoln's birthday was never a national holiday, but was a state holiday in some states. Mostly his birthday was freely and spontaneously celebrated, especially in schools.

George Washington's Birthday was moved on the calendar by a self-centered act of Congress, and it's a shame, but the "national holiday" is still called George Washington's Birthday, not Presidents Day. Unless you live in Texas (and some other states), where lots of people are still unhappy about the change.

President Bill Clinton, in a Proclamation (no doubt written by someone else; he just signed it) made a reference to "Presidents' Day" and the damage was permanent. Add in the carelessness from calendar makers, and dear old George is almost history.

Hans
So, I am 'the victim of the cult of Americanism'. And you oppose the separation of church and state and favor church/state union.

Nothing personal, but have you thought of moving to another country (if you live in the USA now)? I am proud to be an American, even when I disagree with my government. For example, I strongly opposed (and oppose) the invasion of Iraq, as did the Pope. Stupid blunder caused by (1) arrogance, (2) ignorance, (3) oil, (4) Israel lobby and (5) profits.

Certainly I was not a admirer of Franco. He was supported by Hitler and Mussolini. Maybe you liked them, too. Nor was I for the Loyalists. One of those cases - there have been many in history - where a 'plague on both their houses'. I visited Spain during Franco's time and Protestants had to hide, unless they were in an embassy-related church. (e. g., Anglican Church in Madrid.) I presume you would justify this ugly and undemocratic discrimination, too. Outrageous.

The Bible tells us that 'ye shall know them by their fruits'. The Catholic Church has done some fine things, but it also has been the cause of enormous suffering through its persecution of dissent, etc. St. Thomas Aquinas, for example, wrote that heresy is so evil that heretics should be delivered to the civil authorities to be executed. I presume you would approve of that, too. Sounds a lot like Muslim fanatics of our time. That was the policy in many times and places where Catholicism was the established church.

I am proud to be a liberal Protestant who thinks for myself. I do not follow the 'party line' of any Pope or cleric or creed. God provided us a brain to use and not turn over to some outside organization. On the contrary I respect all faiths that seek God, who love God and their fellow human beings (per Jesus). I have less patience with those who think they have truth 'in a bottle' and who claim that those who don't accept their truth are outside the true faith. Intolerant, bigoted, and arrogant hogwash. And thank God that most modern-day Catholics do not agree with you. They appear to have learned that there is no 'one true church'. but that people of faith, whatever their religion, should not only tolerate but seek to understand one another.

Great column, mixed bag of comments
I love this column. Many people responded in the sincere spirit in which the column was written.

I am stunned to read the level of vitriol coming from the nut-left and the nut-right. One thing has always united these groups - it's always the fault of DA JOOZ! I hope that those people suffering so miserably at the hands of the Zionists will also shun the fruits of Zionist labor, whether it be agriculture, medicine, or high technology. Some of these folks look forward to the day when they will be among that miniscule group that manages to make it into their stingy version of heaven, where they will have the satisfaction of watching most of the world burn eternally in hell - the goal of their spiteful god. Sounds just like the jihadists to me.

I intend to take up Mr. Prager's challenge. I think most Americans are benevolent and patriotic, and they will enjoy this ritualized reading. Mr. Prager, keep an eye on your e-mail inbox! Well done!

Church Militant
Roy, yes, I am of the Church militant. I am an unapologetic Traditional Roman Catholic. I do not, however, in any way, condone killing in the name of God. The majority of murderers in NYC during the draft riots were Irish Catholics, yes. But do not forget that Sherman, et. al. employed derelicts, pardoned convicts and bible-only protestants to plunder Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina for the precious 'Union'. We can quid pro quo all we want and use history as jabs, hooks, and round-house kicks. That will get us no where. We need to focus our intellects on what will cure our nation and civilization. I also freely admit that those in control of Christ's Bride: The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, mere mortals, are prone to error, as we all are. I commend your knowledge of history. God established one Christian Church, not a group of 33,000 different sects spouting their interpretations of (forged) Scripture. Furthermore, the philosophies of dualism(Descartes), taken to its logical extreme, have given us(mankind) the wickedness of the French anti-clerics whose legacy is the moral abyss we now inhabit: porno, infanticide, normalization of sodomy, etc. Descartes and his contempories have put posion into men's minds(Marquis de Sade) that we are seperate from God; we are not. I unapologetically support Church/State union; I unequivocally support Generalisimo Franco(another vitim of anti-Catholic propoganda and his fight for Tradition in Spain; read about the Red Death the freedom loving liberals in Spain inflicted on Priests, nuns, and apologetic peasants. So, do you support the anticlerics from the Spanish Civil War?). There can be no separation of Church and State for goodness to be manifest. You are a victim of the cult of Americanism. Free thinking leads to mortal sin and decay of civilization--our country is guilty of the slaughter of close to 48 million innocents--all in the name of choice and freedom. I pray that for the salvation of you and your family's souls that you all will come back to Catholicism and pray for an end to divorce, abortion and pornography. Democracy destroys.

Independence Day (Seder)
America's teachers have removed books of American History, American Writers and English Literature from the libraries and schools do not require students to take courses pertaining to the above subjects and teach the courses incorrectly and sparingly. This is why students are ignorant of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution.

"Two hundred and thirty-one years ago this July 4th, 1776 a committee of five patriots, headed by a young farmer from Virginia, presented the final draft of the Declaration of Independence to 55 of his colleagues in the Second Continental Congress. After making relatively few changes to Thomas Jefferson's work and then, pledging to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor." All 56 members signed their names to this Declaration of Independence. By doing this they created something that was then unique in the world: a country based on the concepts of individual liberty, religious freedom, private property, pursuit of happiness and democratic governance of the people, by the people and for the people.

Students are also ignorant of how Americans fought the American Revolution against the most powerful military in the world and defeated, the United Kingdom of England, with a "ragtag militia", insurgents and patriots of General George Washington's Continental Army which was poorly equipped, fed and clothed. Nevertheless, America was on her way to becoming the United States of America...and of course, the rest is history.

There is a lot more about the history of slaves from shackles to freedom to Civil Rights in the libraries now and in some schools and colleges are required courses. But nothing about the history of the American Revolution so the 4th of July is just another holiday from work. True patriotism is on the battlefields throughout the world...American men and women fighting and dying for freedom so the uncaring and unknowing may have a day of fireworks and fun. I believe the Declaration of Independence should be read on the school and college intercoms, in all the churches, synagogues, temples and yes, even the mosques and especially BEFORE the parades and fireworks begin...this will be OUR COUNTRY'S 4TH OF JULY SEDER.

I thought as of last night we were shunning Robert-o?

Hans
You sound like a militant Roman Catholic. I'm sure you take pride in the one Catholic who signed the Declaration of Independence. Probably you also applaud the draft riots in NYCity during the Civil War when Irish Catholics killed Black orphans among others. Going back a few of centuries, you must think the Pope was terrific for ordering a Te Deum sung after the 'wonderful victory' of killing thousands of French Protestants in the Massacre of St. Bartholomew. Oh, and Pope Adrian IV, the only English Pope, gave William I all of Ireland because the Irish, in his words, were so immoral! More recently, you can boast that Mussolini and Franco were Catholics, along with Laval - oh, and Hitler was baptized Catholic (though to be fair, he was essentially anti-Christian).

That's only the beginning. Up until Vatican II (thank God for John XXIII) the RC Church eagerly wanted to turn the USA from a democracy (founded by Protestants) into a 'Catholic state' which would outlaw contraception, bar Masons and the YMCA, give federal funds to parochial schools, exert broad censorship, enforce the index (verboten!) on books by such heretics as Descartes, Voltaire, Pascal, etc.

But most American Catholics today aren't led like pliable sheep as was true 50+ years ago. They think for themselves and don't pay all that much attention to what the Pope or the Bishops say. So, those of us who once fretted about Catholic power in the USA now relax. How much influence does the church have upon Pelosi, Kennedy, Durbin, Dodd, and dozens of others Catholics in Congress? None.

Then, again, my father's family were Catholics - nice people - thinking people - so they departed that church and became broad-minded Protestants. They treasure their freedom of thought. Of course, Protestants can't boast about some of their history, either, although the Reformers started a good thing. Sadly, some of the most irrational and irresponsible people in the USA today, while well-intentioned, are hidebound, 'born again', end-time, ignorant, superstitious evangelicals. God save us from them!

I do like Francis of Assisi and Mother Theresa, and compliment Catholicism on its aid to the poor, hospitals, etc. Too bad that some Catholics are still 'true church' bigots.

Crusades, Part Deux
Wahabism took off to counter the humiliating defeat of the Muslims by the Hapsburgs at the gates of Vienna. From there it fomented and lay dormant for some time in Saudi Arabia, but it went on to assume control in the spirit of Mohammed and bloodlust eminating from the 'true' Islam of the 7th century. When the Brits and other western empires started the ad hoc annexing of the Middle East for oil, then the Wahabis found their causes belli. Your use of the Crusades as a counter punch misses. Since you have lived in Protestant America and have been fed a steady dose of anti-Catholic propaganda, you believe the Crusades to be an offensive war to slaughter Jews and Muslims. In reality, Pope Urban called for crusaders to protect both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Christians from Islamic bandits and zealots. Yes, I know, there were those among the crusaders who wontonly killed and maimed; however, all Popes in these two centuries condoned such activities and excommunicated those who perpetuated and ordered the massacres.

Hans more
"Exporting democracy to tribes accustomed to warlords and clan hierarchy is idiocy as all men are not created equal."

Maybe true. I assume then you would prefer the alternative which will have to be like the crusades "part deaux"

Hans
Actually no. Wahabism was quite a minor sect in islam until the discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia. Even then, the sect wasn't militant until the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, the followers of Sayyid Qutb which really took off in the 1960's

Daily Mail article
Thank you, Apoplectic, for the link and the insight. I will defer to the fact that, yes, this follower of the religion of peace and his immediate comrades were motivated by Western decadence. Between the Barbary Wars of the late 18th century and the creation of Israel(or obliteration of Palestineans) how many times did the Islamists attack us? Or issue Fatwas? Wahabism was intact, I believe, all this time. The Jacks(Brits) got whooped in Afghanistan because they were there. Basically, it is not the job of one country to be the conscience of the world. Exporting democracy to tribes accustomed to warlords and clan hierarchy is idiocy as all men are not created equal. All men yearn for powerful leaders. God Bless a return to the Divine Right of Kings.

My 'ilk'
My 'ilk' built Western Civilization. My 'ilk' have provided you with everything that you have. However, starting with the deformation of Martin Luther and apexing with the French Revolution, your precious liberty, cult of democracy and Americanist religion is destroying the civilization that saved you from Islam. Your vicious wish for me and other Catholics to experience hospitable living conditions is cold-hearted and uncharitable, but nonetheless predictable from a neo-con. By the way, living in a country free from abortion, pornography, homosexual activism, consumerism, etc. would not be a bad thing. I am already enemy number 1 to atheists, homos, zionists, and all other heretics here in good 'ole abort-'em-if-you got-'em, put-off-having-kids-buy-a-harley-and-a-flatscreen-tv, watch-porn-vote-republican, send-your-two-kids-to-public-school, worship-heretic-Sean-Hannity USA

Hans said
"They are over here because we are over there" is absolutely correct"

That is absolutely incorrect. It is simply an excuse used by the radicals to deceive those, like Hans, that are ignorant of their real adgenda. This article is about what is really going on http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=465570&in_page_id=1770

Re Christmas, Passover, etc.
I appreciate Prager's patriotism. Two quick thoughts.

His column seems to lament the fact that Christmas is being upstaged by "Happy Holidays". And why is that? In large part because Jews, primarily secular Jews, have persistently and aggressively fought against any and all evidence of Christmas and Christianity in our public culture. That includes everything from banning prayers at high school graduations to removing crosses from state and community seals. Check out those who initiated such suits. And check out the biggest shots in the ACLU.

As for the passover ceremony, so highly tauted: that always struck me more as a nationalistic festival than as a religious one. Rather like Hannukah and Purim, which also are more based on historical Jewish victories over enemies than on religious faith. Consider the bloody revenge element in the Esther (Purim) story. Quite in contrast to the message of Jesus.

In contrast, Yom Kippur is a truly religious holy day. And Roshashanah, also.

I favor the separation of church and state, one of our great blessings here in the USA. But I can become annoyed when traditional religious traditions have to be discarded because they smack of Christianity, the faith of 80% and more of our people. I also find it ironic that none of these Jewish dissenters seem to object to the massive financial aid we have provides Israel for years. And Israel is clearly a theocracy where one religion, Orthodox Judaism. is given official endorsement and preference. I recall my four visits there, where - for example - no buses and TV are allowed on the Sabbath, the Star of David is on the outside of the Knesset, the national anthem lauds the Jewish people, Orthodox Jewish men can be exempted because of religious studies, Orthodox schools have public funding, etc. etc. Why no outcry from those who insist upon complete separation here?

Just curious. I love everybody, and respect Judaism and faithful Jews. But some of these contradictions do trouble me. Christianity seems to be a frequent target.

Robert, Huh?
"If Saddam...
had had something to do with Islamic Jihadist then you might have apoint, he didnt, you dont."

I suppose giving large sums of money to the families of suicide bombers was not "having something to do with Islamic Jihadists"

Well said, and I will do as you suggest as well.
God Bless America and have a Happy 4th.

the true meaning of tomorrow
perhaps everyone could stop complaining about everything "going wrong" with our the Bush administration and the 110th congress for one day and instead embrace the fact that we are all proud to be Americans and honor our Founding Fathers for writing the Declaration of Independence!!

Just a thought... but I know tomorrow is one of the few holidays that has not turned into just another 3 day weekend.

Got 'em all dyerje
Every book you list is in our family library. They're all great and there are dozens and dozens more I could list.

(I am currently listing resources at my new website, and I am only through the Ancients so far.http:www.lisa.crews-family.org I have no idea how long it will be before I get to American History.)

There are so many outstanding books, it's so sad few people outside the homeschool Classical Education community are familiar with them.

I would LOVE to read lists from other people. I might be missing something good and that simply will not do!

Homeschool Mom
What excellent recommendations. Mr. Prager is right: preservation of our national heritage will have to be the project of the people in their private capacity, and annual traditions on our national holidays are the best start on that.

Patrick Henry's famous speech was a favorite in my family too. My grandfather knew most of the Declaration's charges against George III from memory, and I remember each of my siblings in turn reciting from the Declaration of Independence, on July 4th, after we had memorized portions of it in school. I doubt kids memorize it any more.

My mother was always wonderful about finding good children's books to make our national story come alive for us. The Ingri d'Aulaire and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire books about Washington, Franklin, and Lincoln were particular favorites. Alice Dalgliesh and Leonard Weisgard's The Courage of Sarah Noble, about a girl whose family moves to the frontier in the early 1700s, is another one that young girls, especially, are likely to really enjoy, and a good Thanksgiving read. Slater Brown's Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys was another favorite when we were in the elementary middle grades.

Of course, Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books are well-known and beloved by many. Little Town on the Prairie has an absolutely wonderful description of a July 4th celebration on the frontier -- and in fact, both that one and These Happy Golden Years convey a superb sense of the knowledge of American history and our national ideals that were common among ordinary people, and were communicated to young people through education and national celebrations, in the 1880s.

Better suited for Christmas -- because the event in question occurred on Christmas of 1776 -- is Lynne Cheney's excellent children's book When Washington Crossed the Delaware. This book beautifully captures the difficulty of Washington's gamble on one of the riskiest tactical moves there is, and the slenderness of this thread on which the fate of the American Revolution hung.

I'm sure people have many more suggestions. Again, great idea, Mr. Prager, and thanks to Homeschool Mom for priming the pump.

Erudite? Lean in your ear.
You get your marching orders from talk radio and their ilk. Talk about speciousness. "They are over here because we are over there" is absolutely correct. This clash of cultures you talk about has been going on since the 7th century. A spine of steel? Are you fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan? If you are, all the best. If you are not, stop with the hypocrisy. Yes, my sweet neo-con, isolationism works, imperial democracy does not. To call Ron Paul a 'quack' is insulting to those in his district; you owe them an apology.

Hellpful Resources
Independence Day

Rituals

We read aloud Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!" speech before fireworks each year.

I also had my girls memorize most of the first 2 paragraph's of the Declaration of Independence when they were 7 and 9. (We ended with the line ...most likely to effect their safety and happiness."

Our third child became a citizen when we finalized her adoption, and when we finally get her citizenship papers from CIS (a 12-18 month wait on average) we will read aloud the part where she is declared a citizen.

Fantastic Books

If you are introducing your children to the Dec. of Indep. read it from The Declaration of Independence: The Words that Made America illustrated and inscribed by Sam Fink. There are very interesting pictures that humorously illustrate each phrase which really engages children.

Also get Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride illustrated by Ted Rand. It is the full text with the most beautiful watercolor paintings.

Thanksgiving

Rituals

Our first course at Thanksgiving is five pieces of corn on each plate. We read about the "starving time" where the pilgrims' daily rations were 5 pieces of corn. Then we read the names of the pilgrims who died that first year. (Plymouth Plantation has a great selections of resources you can order online.)

For an even bigger picture read The Story of Liberty by Charles C. Coffin which begins with establishment of Parliament with the Magna Charta and follows European history along through the Reformation until the Colonization of Jamestown and Plymouth. A great read aloud for mid-elementary kids and up.

To help your children understand the harsh conditions of the pilgrims read If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 by Ann McGovern.

Once you get to Plymouth read aloud Stories of the Pilgrims by Margaret Pumphrey. It is geared to elementary aged kids and is really enjoyable. We read the whole thing in 2 sittings a few years ago (before my 3 child came along) because the girls begged for more each time I stopped.

These are a few gems in a huge selection of quality books out there.

A 4th of July Tradition
Normally our family watches the musical 1776 on July 4th. Perhaps I will bring it to the cookout at the rabbi's house tomorrow instead. It's not quite a haggadah but it is a start. Happy Independence Day to all!

And TV can't be bothered, either
A&E and The History Channel used to run their wonderful series, "The American Revolution." But no more! Can't be bothered. We've got "Biography" and that series about the underworkings of cities to show.

Maybe, just maybe Turner Classics will be showing some war movies, that highlight what we used to consider virtues. They usually do. On the other hand, they've caved to the gay lobby now, too, and run their series on homosexuality in the movies. Great. Keep it up. It probably brings ratings.

Fagh!

(That's a transcription of an expression of disgust, by the way, not a slur on gays)

Put Memorial Day back!
What better way to show our appreciation for those who have given their lives for our country, than to put Memorial Day back the the 30th, and to celebrate it where it falls, than just to have it as the fourth Monday in May.

By changing the holiday, we told our war dead, "Yeah, thanks, we appreciate it and all, but it's too inconvenient for businesses, to have to deal with the floating day. And we'd really like to get a start on our summer. Sorry, boys, there'll be a parade, but it's really more for the antique cars, and the local theater's float. You understand, right?"

Same goes for "Presidents' Day". What an insult to the two most influential Presidents in our history, that we can't be bothered even to celebrate their memory individually--again, too disruptive of business. Let's just lump 'em together.

Next thing you know, we'll move the Fourth of July to the first Tuesday of the month, and Christmas will be the last Friday in December.

A nation that forgets its heroes and its past has lost its moorings, as we have found out.

Shame on us all.

Hillary delenda est.

Ominous
Mr. Prager,
Your idea has great merit; more Americans associate July 4th with fireworks than with the freedoms for which our ancestors fought. Even honoring the meaning of the day by getting off of work is not comprehensive: look at most furniture stores, car dealerships; as you point out, July 4 is only an occasion for another "sale."
This society has become so watered down with political correctness, it may be too late.
Maybe I'm a "half-empty" glass person, but I doubt there will be any Americans celebrating the founding fathers of the USA 3000 years from now!

BINGO!
Dennis, you nailed it! There is no appreciation for The Hardship that was required for America to gain independence. Of course, Liberal Shill has a post ranting about Tribalism. SO WHAT! The tribe is Americans and tomorrow is The Birthday of Our Homeland!

Happy 4th everyone!

American Seder?
I am usually impressed with Mr. Prager's abilities to elucidate his opinions and beliefs, even though I disagree with him on almost everything. This article is more fodder for those of us who abhor the sovereignity that the US has absconded to the Zionists. Contrary to Mr. Prager and the likes of the neo-Catholic Bill Bennet and other neo-Con Zionists, the United States is not the 'last best hope' or even a shining beacon on a hill. Just ask the 45 million plus babes in limbo, the Indians, the Catholics, etc. The grand American experiment is nothing but the whore of Babylon described in The Apocalypse of St. John. Get over the cult of Amercanism.

Depends on what you're looking to do
Well, if it meant celebrating Jefferson, Locke, Washington and the principles of freedom, liberty and federalism, and how a limited republican government turned into a giant behemoth that is more intrusive than King George could ever dream of, then more power to you.

However, if it’s just another quasi-religious ceremony that is attempting to idolize the current Federal Leviathan and equate devotion, obedience, and unquestioning loyalty to the State with service to God, then no thank you.

Great Idea, Dennis
The Passover Seder is a most beautiful and moving ritual. Those who are not familiar with it really need to experience it to understand how powerful it really is.

Unfortunately, Americans often take for granted those who came before us and made this country great. We have the luxury of "forgetting" because we do not have to worry about survival. We are so relatively safe that some cannot imagine that there is a horrid evil out there who would kill every one of us if given the chance. And, no that evil is not George Bush.

I am a special education teacher (learning disabilities) and I co-teach in U.S. History and English (American Literature) where there is a mix of reg and special ed students. Being a people-oriented person, I focus on the great people in history and I am an unabashed fan of those people. I refuse to judge them according to present day standards.

I read about and study historical figures (autobiographies and biographies are my favorites). The students have commented that it seems like I actually know these people. They enjoy hearing things that bring these people to life.

Great men and women have brought us to where we are. We honor them by keeping their words and deeds alive. This is not to say that other countries have not had exceptional people as well, but these are OUR people. We are unique, and we are wonderful, and yes, we are special. Our children need to understand that.

For those of you who think America is not special and is not worth fighting for, etc. why are you here? You would not have near the freedom you have here in most other countries.

Profound Indeed
Ah, Mr. Prager, you’ve done it again. I enjoy you for one thing I tell my employees I prefer most in human characteristics, the ability to see past obvious problems and offer a solution.

The Problem:
“…the era of anti-wisdom was ushered in by the baby boomer generation…”

The Solution:
a commemorative activity to bring focus back to what freedom and liberty meant/means.

One reason the Fourth of July has not been downgraded as severely as other memorial traditions is because it happens when our children are away from their Neo-communist Day Keepers. The regularly scheduled celebrations of diversity during the school year in the name of distributed misery, err, identity are foisted upon our young for the same reason you give as what keeps alive 3200 year old traditions. It works by youth’s natural desire to assimilate with their elders. That is the young before puberty, which may be the reason for another Jewish tradition that recognizes when you’ve changed into an adult and should begin behaving like one.

First we need some attention getting activity. No small feat in this day and age, especially when it’s the de facto time for family vacation away from home. It’s also a time of family reunion. And, there is still some promise in that as a celebration of heritage.

I propose that some particularly patriotic state or local government body mandate their school rooms be made available on the 4th for families to gather and put on displays of their personal family history in this country. It would foster community awareness and be a gathering point for those new arrivals to an area.

Media types big and small would enjoy covering that kind of event, since everyone would be in one place. A press release is a simple thing.

For my part, I’ll start looking around my own town, for next year. Thank you for the inspiration.

sign of the times -
Perhaps another reason why the celebrations are not as significant and meaningful as they used to be is because our society has become too "busy", always on the go-go-go which leads people to yearn for a most coveted day off. I myself am a little guilty of this. I gotta admit, those 3 day weekends do sound nice at times when they come up!

Additionally - there are way too many 'holidays' and even "months" and awareness days (i.e. February being Black History month; Earth Day; Secretary's Day; Breast Cancer awareness Month, those in the midwest will be familiar with Sweetest Day, etc. etc. etc.) I'm not diminishing those entities but when you have all of that and an ever increasing number of them, it gets way overboard.

Finally, you have TV and retail stores pushing an ever-increasing number of 'holidays' (I'm using that term very loosely) with all their advertising/marketing - just go to your local greeting card store: "Happy (Kwanza, Grandparents Day, Ramadan, Tax Free day, Cinco de Mayo, Groundhog Day, Insert Holiday here)" It's ridiculous!

Just a comment...
Dennis,

This is all well and good; however, I am sure that you are aware of the problems faced at present by the Jewish community (in a religious sense, not a national one). The number of Jews that are seriously committed to traditional Judaism are tiny relative to the number of Jews that are either assimilating, intermarrying, or simply choosing not to fully commit to Judaism. So before we start prescribing a "Seder" for Americans, let's make sure that actual Jews are observing the real Seder on Pesach (Passover).

ValiantforTruth, I don't think that what Dennis wrote is in conflict with your post. Dennis is not arguing for a theological connection between the Biblical Israel, and Covenant Theology. He is simply making a cultural comparison. America cannot survive without a strong ritual, historical and cultural memory - not unlike the one possessed by Judaism.

Incidentally - and speaking of ritual/historical/cultural memory - today is "Shiva Asar be-Tamuz" (the 17th day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz), which is the anniversary of the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem prior to the destruction of the 1st (and according to the Talmud, Ta'anit 28b, the 2nd) Temple. Jews mourn this occasion by fasting.

I hope that all those who bemoan the lack of a strong cultural memory among recent generations of Americans are making sure that their own religious commitments are strong and secure. Having said that, I wish you, Dennis, an easy fast.

Peter Marshall Jr
He is the son of The Peter Marshall, Chaplain of the Senate and great man of God. He's been
writing and teaching our heritage for decades, wrote some great books on our early history, "The Light and The Glory" etc. Lately he's begun an education project to teach our historical heritage. If you visit his website, it will explain it a lot better than I can.
There's some who post on this site who never miss a chance to put down home schooling yet it's
those kids who are getting the non revised American History and civics. I know, because I
taught my youngest son for 10 years and made sure
he knew what this country is about. And 12 of my
14 grandchildren are also homeschooled or were, and the two who aren't now, began as homeschoolers but the marriage broke up and she had to work. They are all getting educated the old fashioned way, with the Bible (as was my son)
the primary source for all other subjects.
It's time we started pressuring our state electeds to return to our unrevised history and civics and mandate they be taught in public schools.

It's all just tribalism...
... and if you look through history, you'll see that tribalism ain't necessarily a good thing. That's not to say that remembering great people or important events isn't important, but I'm not sure using them to enforce a "them and us" attitude is such a noble idea.

Those who
...fail to learn from history are doomed to relive it. I know, it's one of the most quoted phrases ever, but unquestionably true. With the popular definition of history as whatever Paris Hilton did last month and other such self absorbed crap, its easy to see why the average seeker of instant gratification thinks of history as the class I slept thru in HS. A tradition such as rhe seder would be hugely instuctional in current times. Those who decry our lack of progress in Iraq have forgotten the following time line: 1776 Declaration of Independence, 1783 Victory at Yorktown, 1789 ratification of Constitution(following failure of Articles of Confederation). Let's see, that means only 13 years to throw off a colonial power which at the time was a global superpower, adopt one form of government which went down the tubes and replace it with an alternative that worked(oops it worked for about 65 years until half the country revolted, only to be subjugated by force of arms-it was called the civil war). I guess the Leave it to Beaver crowd wants a bigger task, uniting factions which have a centuries long history of emnity, done in half an hour while mom bakes cookies.

Something better is here...

'The nation whose founders regarded itself as the Second Israel must now learn how to survive from the First.'-Dennis Prager

Mr. Prager, your last statement needs some explanation.

Most of the Founding Fathers held to Covenant Theology. Their concept Of Israel was much different than yours, since they embraced the New Testament revelation as fulfillment of the Old Testament. The blessings and promises made to old Israel are realized spiritually through a new nation identified as the New Covenant Church [Hebrews 8 & 10; I Peter 2:4-10].

They saw America as new Israel in that the Kingdom of God was advancing in the New World through the proclamation of the gospel in the church.

The new Israel has no borders in space or time. Its citizens worship the living God in spirit and truth. You do greatly err in calling us back to the first. Something much greater is here in the new. The great event that forever links the two is the cross.

Unfortunately History isn't Sexy Enough

Unfortunately a prime mover of patriotism is television and movies, and I don't think it's any coincidence that the near vacuum of presenting characters or stories mentioning national pride or reverence for historical characters within the last thirty years has resulted in a decline of national pride and history appreciation. Some movies do perk a kind of incidental blip of national pride like Independence Day or early Bruce Springsteed -- which show you can jar people's sense of country that way, but it's not done often enough to counter the one-worlders. We just don't hold history in much esteem any more. When you see children's programming on the Family and Disney Channels belittling history as a laughable and irrelevant general knowledge point and a nuisance school requisite that's in the way of strutting fashion and pop "music" indulgences, it's just dismaying. Maybe by making history sexy too somehow is the cure, but then it'd lose its sacred value I'd guess.

Thank You Dennis
Clarity rules the day once again. I went to a local grocery store yesterday, and they had beautiful little cakes decorated in patriotic red, white and blue frosting. It never occured to me before to buy my kids a little cake like that, put some candles on it and sing "Happy Birthday America". Even little things can make big impressions on children and create memories that last a lifetime.

To inspire gratitude to our children for our blessed country rates right up there among the most important things one can do to promote happiness.

God Bless Dennis Prager.

Right on Dennis!
You are absolutely right. This is why I love your program. You cut through the fog of so called intellectual arguments to the core of problems. Clarity is needed everywhere in our society. And national pride kept alive by the retelling of our birth is so very needed.

Thank you

Dan_Schwartz: I only wish that were true
Instead of a Sukkot, I think most homes use Thanksgiving as just a pigout!

Thanksgiving: The American Sukkot
By the way, I explain to my newly-arrived Jewish friends and acquaintances, as well as fellow Jews in Israel, that Thanksgiving is The American Sukkot, where we celebrate bountiful harvests...

Hot dogs and beer...
Hot dogs and beer sure beats hem-stitched cardboard and horseradish!

Amen, Dennis!
I have heard you say this on your show before, and think it is a great idea!

I'll go you one further: I say that people who aspire to live here and come from other countries, should go through a national "conversion" experience. I propose a sort of secular "catechism" that they must learn that includes everything about our national story from George Washington to Johnny Appleseed. They also need to go through a ceremony similar to a bar mitzvah, where they are required to recite a proscribed text IN ENGLISH.

I have often witnessed mass citizenship ceremonies, that politicians are fond of conducting at 4th of July festivities. While I am moved that so many love our country so much that they want to join our club, on the other hand I find these ceremonies superficial, compared to the gravity of the commitment.
