Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

A little over three years ago, CBS sent Dan Rather to Baghdad to ask meaningless questions to, and provide a propaganda vehicle for, Saddam Hussein. Last night, Communication for Barbarians Service broadcast Mike Wallace's equally meaningless interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran's fanatical leader.

Interviews with evil leaders are meaningless at best and destructive at worst. Few reporters will ask real questions or challenge the propaganda responses of these leaders. These interviews merely offer them invaluable "humanizing" time and ask questions that reconfirm the low state of television news.

Here are some of the tough questions Mike Wallace asked one of the vilest leaders on earth today: What he thinks of President Bush, why he is concerned about how his jacket looks on television and what he does for leisure. Never once did he challenge Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's attacks on America -- such as America's loving war, seeking to be an imperial power or oppressing its own people.

When asked about his statements that the Holocaust is a "myth," Ahmadinejad replied, "What I did say was, if this is a reality, if this is real, where did it take place?" Wallace did not respond to the leader of a country saying "if" the Holocaust "is real" with a single question. But he probably laughed more with Ahmadinejad than any American news reporter has ever laughed on camera with the president of the United States.

If CBS wanted anything more than ratings and Wallace wanted to be more than a "useful idiot" (Lenin's phrase for the Western journalists and academics who supported Soviet Communism), here are some questions he should have asked Ahmadinejad:

In countries with a free press and where history is understood as consisting of verifiable facts, anyone who denies the Holocaust, the systematic murder of approximately 6 million Jews by the Nazis, is regarded as either an anti-Semite or a kook or both. You have repeatedly denied the Holocaust. Why should the world not regard you as either a kook or an anti-Semite? And do you understand why most free societies wish to prevent you from acquiring nuclear weapons?

Given that you have announced that you wish Israel to be erased from the map, why would those countries that do not share your desire to extinguish a country not try to prevent you from acquiring nuclear weapons?

In Iran, under your direction, religious police walk around the country monitoring how much skin a woman reveals. Most of the world considers this primitive and another reason to regard you and your regime as fanatical. On what grounds do you support whipping women who reveal their arms in public? And do you understand why such policies help explain why most free societies wish to prevent you from acquiring nuclear weapons?

Why do you believe that millions of Iranians chant "death to America" and "death to Israel" but no Americans or Israelis chant "death to Iran"? Are people more bored in an Islamic republic than in a free society? Does your brand of Islam promote preoccupation with death rather than life? Or is there simply a lot more hatred in your country than in free societies? And do you understand why all this hatred helps explain why societies in which people do not chant death wishes would like to prevent your society from acquiring nuclear weapons?

In Iran, women determined by Islamic courts to have committed adultery have been stoned to death. According to The Washington Times, "The condemned are wrapped head to foot in white shrouds and buried up to their waists. Then the stoning begins. The stones are specifically chosen so they are large enough to cause pain, but not so large as to kill the condemned immediately. They are guaranteed a slow, torturous death. Sometimes their children are forced to watch." Do you believe that this brings world admiration to Islam? And do you understand why most societies in which women who commit adultery are not stoned wish to prevent you from acquiring nuclear weapons?

Last year, a teenage girl who said she was raped by two young men was not only not believed, she was given 100 lashes by your Islamic republic. Many of us find whipping teenagers for having sex, not to mention for being raped, unimpressive. Does this help to explain why societies that do not whip teenage girls are not excited about your country acquiring nuclear weapons?

Last month, a British newspaper, the Sunday Mirror, reported that in your Islamic republic, "16-year-old Atefeh Rajabi was dragged from her prison cell and taken to be executed. The Iranian judge who had sentenced Atefeh to death was left unmoved as he personally put the noose around her neck and signalled to the crane driver. Kicking and screaming, Atefeh was left dangling for 45 minutes from the arm of the crane . . . Atefeh's crime? Offending public morality. She was found guilty of 'acts incompatible with chastity' by having sex with an unmarried man, even though friends say Atefeh was in such a fragile mental state that she wasn't in a position to say no."

Does this help explain why people who don't support hanging young girls from cranes might be concerned about Iran acquiring nuclear weapons?

As it happens, Mike Wallace and CBS News did what they set out to do -- win in the ratings war Sunday night. But they hurt America and abetted evil in the process. Not deliberately, but knowingly.

Islamophobia
>>>>>"When asked about his statements that the Holocaust is a "myth," Ahmadinejad replied, "What I did say was, if this is a reality, if this is real, where did it take place?" Wallace did not respond to the leader of a country saying "if" the Holocaust "is real" with a single question.

Wallace didn't have to ask. He extracted a stupid statement -- and few of us are dumb enough to need Dennis Prager to explain the obvious.

Prager's in-yer-face style may work sitting at a computer, but what good would it do to attack the person you're interviewing???

>>>"Why should the world not regard you as either a kook or an anti-Semite?"

Wallace is a brilliant interviewer, who made his subject look like an ass without the need for any of the "tough" questions that Prager suggests.

Great interviewers focus on their subjects -- not on their own ego -- and extract what they want.

Prager would have been facing an empty chair within 15 minutes -- and convincing himself that his failure was a success. As the background music fades in, "Ma ...cho mac...ho man."

Then again, Ahmadinejad may have sat back and calmly responded, "Why should the world not regard you as far more bigoted than you claim me to be?"

>>>>>>"If CBS wanted anything more than ratings and Wallace wanted to be more than a "useful idiot" ....

They wanted an interview.

Here's your card.

Are you ready to convert to Islam?
Mike Wallace and CBS are predictable. In contrast, George Bush talks tough about Iran, and does nothing.

Iran took Americans hostage a generation ago, and we did nothing. Iran's proxies blew up a Marine barracks shortly thereafter, and we did nothing. Now Iran supports terror in Iraq and Israel, and we do nothing.

Nothing but talk.

The Muslims laugh at us. They laugh that our "tough" president says that Islam is a religion of peace. Since 911, Muslims have killed civilians in Russia, Spain, America, England, France, Holland, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Sudan, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and many other countries.

Of course, there's nothing new there. Muslims have been killing and enslaving civilians for centuries.

Muslims want to kill we "infidels" or force us to submit to their will. In return, we send them billions of petrol dollars and give them unfettered control of our newspapers and television networks to spread their evil propaganda and we invite them into our countries in the millions.

How many more women and children must die before the civilized world unplugs its iPods?

Wallace whitewashes new Hitler
Wallace is known for years as someone who hates Israel and Ahmadinejad are friends on that basis.
And what he has done here is essentially promoting and collaborating with someone who is working day and night to destroy the state of Israel.
He invites standard journalistic practice which looks for the most sensational stuff. A couple of days ago Ahmadinejad stood before a hysterically cheering crowd and led them in the chant 'Death to Israel'. Where was that footage in the interview.
Wallace is a slime but Ahmadinejad is dangerous. He has to be eliminated and as quickly as possible.

dead on Prager
There is adult thought and whining child thought. I surpassed CBS long ago. I do not ever watch CBS news. Why do I want to hear how I am such an evil person for living on this planet. We all know it is a game of looking at evil in the eyes with love in their hearts and baby talk. Why does anyone give CBS any credibility. I remember in junior high talking out load saying why don't you ask this question? Why do you ask the obvious and don't challenge them on their stupid answer? Come on folks. CBS is no different the Jerry Springer show. At least Jerry Springer is honest about the trash he produces.
Tell me this, how does going to Journalism school give you any credibility or knowledge of how the world works. Mainstream media says they are the gatekeepers. So this means people who have no qualifications or education of any subject aquire the information and distribute it in a manner to create a conclusion that they percieve is accurate? About a year ago I realized that Bill Oreilly is a popnjay. He is no different the mainstream media. He pontificates on subjects that he knows little about. He gives no credit to those who are experts in said fields and the brings on idiots to make him appear smart.
News should be we report you decide like is done on Brit Hume show. We don't need uneducated people deciding what we see or how to think about it. CBS ignores empirical data and bring discredit intellects on their shows to bolster their uneducated stupid conclusions.
I digress...

Disappointing...
I missed the original airing of, 'the interview.' However, I did catch some of it early this morning. Being the optimist I am, I kept waiting for the exciting conclusion wherein, Mike Wallace shouts, "You sir are crazy!" Wallace then pulls out his cleverly concealed six-shooter and plugs the newest version of, "Ruler of the world" right between his squinty snake eyes.

Shucks.

Anti-Partisan Righty...
Your comments seem to make sense until one considers that the tone in Mr. Prager's column that you consider offensive and ineffectual in interviewing Heads of State like Ahmadinejab is the same tone that "journalists" like Mr. Wallace use when interviewing George Bush and other members of his administration.

I think that Prager is addressing the spirit of the interview anyway, and not the specific questions. And that is the real issue. There was no challenging or critiquing of any of Ahmadinejab's responses, which a genuine interview, if it were honest given the geo-political situation which gave rise to the interview in the first place, would have contained.

This wasn't an interview. It was a profile.

He could have done more
Wallace could have pressed harder without necessarily causing Ahmadinejihad to walk out. But if he had walked out mid-interview, he would have shown the world that he can't stand up to tough questioning. And if he had responded to tough follow-up questions by sitting back and calmly responding, "Why should the world not regard you as far more bigoted than you claim me to be?", Wallace could have simply reminded him that he agreed to the interview and that interviews involve questions and that responding to a question concerning matters of fact and public record with a question is no answer.

Anti Partisan Swings... misses

"Brilliant"? OMG, Mike's Mom is still alive? Seriously friend, what "useful" information was extracted from this "brilliant" interview? Was it important to you that Ahmadinejed was humanized and given the opportunity to join in the chorus of lefty talking points?

And when the "brilliant" interviewer uses patronizing statements like "the so-called free world" and prefaces his own holocost question with "Ifs" does that not paint him as more sympathizer than interviewer. If the White House Press corp approached their jobs the same way, David Gregory might be invited on hunting trips with Cheney. Oh wait, bad example.

In any case nice to see the "useful idiot" still has a following.

BIPSY QUEEN, AND OTHERS
You, and most others who have responded to Mr. Prager's column, actually know how to read. Apparently, anti-partisan can't. He spouts his nonsense without understand the meaning of the message.

This is the last you will from me about any of his replies. I have do not have the time to waste on people that keep their head buried in the sand and do not understand what is going on around them.

He calls conservatives "islamophobes" when in reality all he is doing is exposing the fact that he hates President Bush and he hates those of the Jewish faith. His tunnel vision is so narrow that that is ALL he can see. Kind of like the islamofacists that are trying to destroy us (the U.S.) and the rest of the free world today.

Anti: You sound like you would make a good islamoterrorist so why don't you just fly to Iran or Iraq and join them. In fact, I'll buy the ticket for you. It would be worth it so we wouldn't have to jump past your drivel while reading comments that are written with thought and insight.

Here's YOUR sign.

Prager Had a Point
The thrust of Prager's article was accurate-Wallace did in fact give Ahmadinejad some increased stature. Prager indicated some questions he would ask--they were too long and convoluted. Any Specialist 4 in the Army could do a better job. Once again you all miss the point--the purpose of all you see the MSM doing is to degrade our government and its institutions. It is not that they love Islamofacist more than their own government--it is that they love Socialism/communism more than they do a capitalist Republic. Now the word is Russ Feingold will be the Democrat presidential nominee--he is a Communist through and through. His father was a Communist and he read Marx long before he learned to tie his shoes. The left thinks it is time to take over, they think based on the polls 27% approval for our government, and the hate of the current President, the time is right to make a move. Feingold is home dusting off the Hammer and Sickle.

Thank God for Dennis Prager
I am happy that a man of Mr. Prager's intelligence stands up for the right things regardless of the politics involved. Absolutely, Mike Wallace's interview with the ruler of Iran was a puff piece in that Wallace didn't pin down Ahmadinajhad on his obvious lies. Whenever Prager writes a column, it will contain nothing but logic and plausible arguments, you can never punch holes in his stands, since he always tells the truth. Prager is the most honest columnist on Townhall.

Anti-Partisan needs to look around
Take a virtual stroll through the Daily Kos, the Democrat Underground and the Huffington Post and look at all the people who thought Ahmadinejad was thoughtful, smart, savvy and suave. See them lament that the Bush Administration has been trying to mislead everyone into thinking this fine fellow is some kind of madman. Then come back and tell us what a good job Wallace did of making him look like a buffoon.

The Fourth Estate
The Fourth Estate is quickly becoming a fifth column! They treat the most murderous dictators with deference and respect (see Castro), they praise tyrants for winning near unanimous elections (see Hussein, Saddam) and now they allow the world's most dangerous anti-semite to answer softball questions from Mike Wallace. Add to that the fact that they seemingly seek out classified information to publish and report, and they are opposed to every anti-terror measure the G has put forth (see Patriot Act, terrorist surveillance, etc) and you have the media acting basically in concert with those that seek our destruction. When will these idiots realize that if the dreams of their socialist role models were ever to be achieved, they would be the first to go to the gulag? I suppose that they think all of their help over the years would hold them in good stead, but we all know that will never happen. This is just another nail in the MSM coffin!

Dennis Prager
Dennis' comments would have made a MUCH better interview. The good news about Mike Wallace is, that he fathered Chris Wallace, who is NOT a left-wing interviewer like his dad. But I digress. Dennis Prager is THE MOST REASONED, THOUGHTFUL RADIO HOST AROUND. In my state, he comes on at the same time as Rush, and I find myself choosing him over the Maha-Rushie, about 60% of the time. His articles on Townhall are one of the highlights of my week.
For the NonPartisan Righty: Dennis is not an Islamophobe. He sees the world clearly, without any Bush hatred clouding his vision. I cannot say the same for you.

Kozinator13
So what? So what if ASKING questions engenders a threat. A person does not deserve to live, or BE an American, if one is afraid to ask questions.

Prager is stupid
All Prager's questions amount to are an attack on the man and his culture. All Ahmadinejad would've done is respond by attacking our culture. And I'm sure you culture warriors out their can think of a few ways to attack the morailty of our culture, can't you?

Prager should stick to what he does best, asking himself questions and then unfairly paraphrasing the response of people on the left.

Phylo out.

Phylo, and Leftist Moral Equivalence
What is simply amazing is that, looking at American culture and Iranian culture, Phylo finds neither one more deserving of attack than the other. There is a pissy, ornery, spiteful part of me that hopes that these Leftist idiots will someday have to live under a fascist Islamic regime, will have to see their precious civil liberties stripped away, so that they at long last realize what the rest of us have known all along: ours IS a superior culture, even with all its faults.

Phylo, go to Iran and protest for abortion rights, or gay rights, and tell us how that goes for you.

Phylo is stupid
Rather than tell us why Prager is wrong, Phylo just says he's stupid. Of course Prager's questions are attacking Ahmad...'s culture. It's evil. How can you sit there and imply that our cultures are equivalent? Did you even read Prager's article? Rape victims whipped, mentally weak women hanged for having sex, etc. You have to be pretty screwy to think that culture is equal to the Western free culture.

shame on cbs
Taking morality to a new low.

Interview, Schminterview
Dennis,

Mike Wallace proved once and for all he is a self-hating Jew of the first magnitude. Would he have taken the same tack with Hitler in 1933? Probably. He also proved he is no journalist, but merely a flack for the left wing. He never asked the questions even a high school newspaper reporter would have asked.

Regarding your last sentence, I disagree. If someone KNOWINGLY COMMITS an act that harms another, is that not DELIBERATE? I believe they are evil, and because they knew what they were doing, crossed over into being wicked. Evil is bad enough, but wicked is worse, because it is deliberate action promoting evil.

I enjoy reading Phylo & Anti-Partisan
I must admit, it's for selfish and pretentious reasons.

For whenever I read Phylo Se Fizer and Anti-Partisan-Righty, I laugh till my sides hurt. It's ammusing to read their posts, and observe their immature rants and their out of control expressions of hate.

It's not nearly as cute as observing children play, but is sure more interesting.

Another way to get a chuckle, is to read the daily kos.

Thumbs up for Prager
I'd like to commend Mr. Prager for his insightfulness.
He could have asked all those questions and put that wee "small man sydrome" idiot from Iran in a major headlock. A few uppercuts like that would have sent him realing.
Amiduffus is a small little man with a pumped up ego backed by another very small man, Mike Wallace.
I thank God that Mike couldn't influence his son Chris and we have him to object and interview his own father about his stupidity.
Retire for real Mike...you are done.
I hope one day that Mr. Prager will get the chance to ask those questions and then some.
Thank you

I am not sure what
all the fuss is about. Back in the '60's we referred to CBS as 'Continuous Bull Schidt'.
I had to get premium cable where I live to get Fox News. But since then I haven't watched any of the Alphabet news channels. Don't even know why everyone is in such a dither about them. Quit watching them. They will either change or start continuous reruns of Sesame Street. Which is closer to the intelligence level of anyone who believes that drivel.

Kozinator 13
If Wallace couldn't ask real questions, why did he go?

the left that is left
Mike Wallace's treasonous interview with Amandmaninjihad proves that modern liberalism is a dangerous and self-hating philosophy with no relation to reason or truth.

Modern liberalism has so embraced the darkness, that it has become one with the darkness.

Truly, the left in America has gone mad, and when at some point(probably soon), the jihadists incinerate one or two of our cities in nuclear fire, the left that is left will blame George Bush.

Phylo Se Fizer
Torturing women to death is not a "culture". It is the reason why madmen like your beloved leader of Iran need to be exterminated from the face of the planet.

Wallace Interview
I think Anti-Partisan_Righty summed it up best. Ahmadinejad displayed a frightening sociopath on a Hitleresque scale. Watching him made me afraid, very afraid.

Mike Wallace in Iran
Anti-Partisan_Righty writes: "NOTHING!!!"

Dear Anti-Partisan.
You wrote an article but you SAID NOTHING. What grade did you complete in school? Or did you go to school?

korect spelleeeng
Amadmaninjihad---this is the correct spelling of the Iranian lunatic's name.

Nothing new here
As I have noted in posts to other columns, there's nothing new either in the MSM's adulation of pure-evil tyrants in general, nor in Mr. Wallace's performance in particular.

TIME magazine named both Hitler and Stalin their "Man of the Year" for different years.

Wallace said in a public forum (PBS' "Ethics in America") that he would let American troops walk into an ambush that he knew of beforehand, rather than try to warn them, because "You're a reporter" and it's "simply a story to cover."

Ernie Pyle is spinning in his grave.

C BS
Next up is Katie Couric.

Need I say more?

And Don't forget,
Would have named OSAMA Man of the Year, if not for the public outcry.

I too enjoy the left's comments here
I enjoy them because it lets me know how wacko they really are. It makes it so much easier for us to win elections. All we really need to do is to let the people understand what they really think and we will win! These folks are so crazy that only 20% of the country agrees with them. If we can show these positions, the Democraptic party will die a quick and painless death.

By the way, I agree that Prager's questions were insultingly phrased. However, even making them "nice" would not take away the stink of their truth.

How about "Many of the people in the west feel that your punishments for what they consider minor issues are both cruel and barbarous. For example.... How do you respond to them". Not insulting, but force the wacko to explain that G*d told him to kill a girl after she was raped or torture to death a woman who made a human mistake.

Oh brother
I didn't say the two cultures were equal. Where did you people come up with that? My point is that his questions would inevitably lead to the interview devolving into a "yeah, but you guys do this and that" festival of insults.

Or do you guys think Ahnadinejad would suddenly say "Hmmmm, you know Mr. Prager, you have a very good point there. We are evil. We will now change our ways. Thanks you so much."

THAT is what I meant when I said that Prager is stupid.

Phylo out.

Phylo Dough can't understand
He complains "I didn't say the two cultures were equal. Where did you people come up with that?"

I will take that as an actual question and answer. Phylo said "All Prager's questions amount to are an attack on the man and his culture. All Ahmadinejad would've done is respond by attacking our culture. And I'm sure you culture warriors out their can think of a few ways to attack the morailty of our culture, can't you?"

Phylo, what you said is that A. The question attacked his culture. B. He would attack our culture. C. There are things to attack about our culture.

Since democracy, capitalism, free speech, and freedom are our culture and torture, rape, biggotry, r*cism, and s*xism are his culture, and we have issues of our own, that asking the questions are worthless.

Here is a little clue. The interview was not for Iranians. It was for the US to understand who he is. I have seen enough Mike Wallace specials to know that even if he could not get a straight answer to a tough question, he would do something else. If this was a Big tobacco CEO, he would intersperse the interview with statistics on tobacco deaths and opposing views. Here, there was no explanation of what was being asked or why. Just soft ball questions that were allowed to lie there without examination.

So, my two points. Your post DID make equivalence between his culture and ours and Mike Wallace played the creampuff. Perhaps not in the interview, but certainly in the edit.

Come read my new blog. Click on my name to link!

Phylo: Bull.
Phylo wrote:

"My point is that his questions would inevitably lead to the interview devolving into a "yeah, but you guys do this and that" festival of insults."

Bull. Wallace has interviewed PLENTY of folks where he took a hostile tone in his questioning, they tried to turn it back around, and Wallace didn't let them. He is the man who practically INVENTED that approach, for God's sakes, at least insofar as telejournalism is concerned. It is possible or even likely that you are right that Ahmadinejad would have tried that tactic, had Mike Wallace played the adversarial role, but we will never know for sure because Wallace never even tried. He soft-pedaled the tyrant, and did everything in his power to make him look GOOD for Western audiences.

"So-called free world"??? Give me a break.

And it may not have been your intent, but the definite thrust of your first post was a moral equivalency between Iran and the U.S. If that wasn't what you intended to convey, you really ought to learn to express yourself more clearly, so that you might avoid sticking your foot in it again. Your LEFT foot.

No need to make ISRAEL enemies our own..
IRAN's tiff with ISRAEL shouldn't concern us. Our fight is with AL QAEDA not with every muslim nut job there is out there. ISRAEL can defend itself very well and we don't need to be making more enemies than we have...

The president's use of islamofascist is an attempt at us trying to make ISRAEL's enemies our own. Lebanon is not a front on the war on terrorism. AFGHANISTAN is because that's were Bin Laden is.

We should focus on the real prize which is BIN LADEN's head, and not get distracted with IRAN, IRAQ LEBANON and any other enemy ISRAEL has...

questions
The question I would like to see asked is: If you were to use nuclear weapons to destroy Israel, what about the Palestineans, Lebanese, Jordanians and other friends of yours who would inevitably be killed as well?

The Sharia answer to DP's question about executing women who are judged "immoral" (and I've heard of cases where the immorality was gossip and unproved) is that we are wicked and sinful and worthy of destruction because we do not execute them.
Someone with this mindset truly would not understand DP's question.

I think I know where Ahmad..'s question about the "where" of the Holocaust would have gone had MW followed up (because I've heard it often enough from Arabs): Why should the Palestineans pay for the sins of the Germans?

Like I need another puff peice
I could live along time and not miss it if the Left-wing press didn't try to convince me that it's just a cultural divide that keeps the West from understanding the East ~ We know what we know and that is that Iran and much of the Muslem world want Israel gone and Hamas and Hezbollah are the tools to achive this goal ~ and if Iran builds an A-Bomb a 15 yr old Palestinian boy name Ahmed will carry it into Tel-Aviv ~ So why not ask how Iranian weapons were found in the possessions of Hezbollah terrorists ~~

Hey Kim Jong-il thise are some nice glasses, that was a nice village you showed us, what do you Kim Jong-il think is wrong with America and could you give us some advice on how to inprove it ?

Johnny, we hardly know you
So, our battle is with Al Qaeda. Not with the other nut jobs. So, if the London plot turns out to be by Hezbollah, then we should not worry that it almost worked?

Do you even know what Al Qaeda is? It is a financing network for terror groups. It is not a single nation, it is more like the United Nations of terror. Our battle is with the radical branch of Islam that wants to impose Sharia law on the world by the sword and to overthrow anything that does not fit in their world view. They want to eliminate all religions other than Islam, Judaism, and Christianity and to put the later two into a second class, barely tolerated position. Barely tolerated in that no churches or mosques are allowed nor is worship. However, you can be allowed to live even if you don't convert. Big whoop.

Now you can call these Islamists, IslamoFacists, Islamic Terrorists, or a hundred different names, but if you insist on limiting this war to Al Qaeda, you are a fool.

Our friends?
No, you got me confused with someone else. I don't care for any of the countries you mentioned.

I think we need to keep focus on BIN LADEN. Let ISRAEL have a knock down fight with the ARAB WORLD if that's what they want. We don't/shouldn't stand to gain/lose from them getting into a war with the rest of the arab world. IT IS NOT IN OUR GEOPOLITICAL INTEREST TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT ISRAEL OR THE ARABS for that matter...

Get out of IRAQ and invade AFGHANISTAN and PAKISTAN if that's what we need to do to get to BIN LADEN.

Value of the interview
If he had tried to ask about stonings or public hangings either the interview would be terminated or you would get the typical Islamic tactic instead of answering he would come up with "What about pedophile preists?" or "What about the abuse of women by American men?" The importance of such an interview is to see the guy in person rather than reading his comments in the news, to get a feel for who he is. I am daily in a chatroom which is Anti-Jihad and Pro-Israel, Pro-American and the reaction in there was they hated Mike Wallace but for once he did good. Also as to millions of Iranians shouting death to America, millions more love America and watch American TV on Satilite as well as American movies and listen to American music. I have been in contact with an Iranian in Teheran every day through email and chats and helping him translate books and he loves America and claims that (two years ago) 90% of Iranians are against their government and want freedom. Through him I have met many other Iranians and they are decent people who are more interested in their families and jobs than politics. They ask me questions about my country my town, my family not about Bush or Israel. They want to get on with their lives not protest against cartoons. The one time I asked my friend about the Koran saying do not befriend Jews or Chrisitans because he said he thought he was supposed to love Jews, he said he interprets the Koran differently. I didn't want to try to talk him into hating me so I left it at that. His english students when they email me talk about their spouses and how much they love their families and their jobs. The ones I spoke to would never put a bomb belt on their kids and when I spoke to my friend Ali about the 16 year old girl who was hung in public he thought it was monstrous and he said the same the day the bus was bombed in Jerusalem by Hamas. He also said the Iranians are Persians and have no love for the Arabs who conquered them. They are proud of their ancient culture and visit the ancient Persian cities. When I one day mentioned his government he replied, "Don't call them my government. They don't represent me." When I said maybe someday we could meet in Israel he repied, "What are you trying to do get me killed."

JOHNNY TOO GOOD
Hey Johnny ever hear this little ditty "Death to Israel, Death to America" catchy lil number aint it ~ I hear it's the #1 song for 27 years straight in Iran ~ good thing they arent our enemy.

History forgotten
Why is it that no one on the left seems to know history. They prattle about Bin Laden as if he is the alpha and omega of terrorism. They speak of Israel as the cause of this or that or say it is our cultural imperialism that drives these wackos.

The west's problems with the Muslims began at the founding of Islam. Immediately upon consolidating his position in Mecca, Mohammed and his armies began to move out. As they moved, they gave their victims three options. They could die, convert to Islam, or if they were Christians or Jews, they could live but only if they agreed not to own possessions, worship, or serve in any office.

This continued for several hundred years with whole populations either slaughtered or converted. Islam's conquests ranged from France where they were defeated at the battle of Tours to Cracow Poland. From the Saharrah desert to midway through India. This expansionism drove the Eastern Roman empire to dissolution and to the Pope asking for help in defending Christian lands. This directly led to the Crusades.

Ultimately, this constant strife and internal political issues led to the exhaustion of the culture and the fragmentation of their empire. Regardless, after 1300 years, the lands that were conquered became 90% Muslim. That is how we got where we are today.

Shortly after our nation was founded, we had our first run-ins with Muslims. In 1801, after paying over $2million in bribes to keep the Barbary Pirates from plundering our shipping, Thomas Jefferson decided enough was enough. He led the build up of our navy and took the war to them. By the way, these were not Pirates by normal meaning. They were privateers of the Ottoman empire. By 1814, a peace treaty was imposed at the point of a gun.

Flash forward to the resurgance of Islam. This has been fueled both by the freedom offered by the British empire taking the middle east from the Ottomans and Turks and by growing revenue from oil in the Arabian dessert.

Once again, there was money to grow and leisure to think and consider old grievances. As all land that was once Muslim is always Muslim and as it is the will of G*d that all the world shall live under his law, the establishment of Israel was a mortal affront. Not because it was a new nation, but because it was not a Muslim nation. Not because there were Jews, but because it was a democratic state that did not live by Sharia.

Thus we are here. Yes, 2/3 of the Muslims just want to be left alone and will leave you alone. Unfortunately, the other third still hews to the orders of the original religion. To expand and conquer until the world lives under the rule of G*d and honors his only prophet.

There are only 3 ways this will end. Either we will surrender and Islam will be triumphant, Islam will be beaten down until exhausted and go back into a slumber, or the third of the religion that believes in conquest will be killed.

This is not Al Qaeda or Iran. It is the expansionistic facistic branch of Islam that we fight.

attn: mr. prager

i'm sorry, i find your views on this unhelpful. while Mike Wallace, and CBS indeed are self serving liars and not even very good at the interview process, the iranian leader kept him on topic.

truth be told, the uSA missed great opportunities 25 years ago which may have resulted as iran as an ally not an enemy.

that the usa has been absolutely inept in the middleast to the point were every division within the mid east has worked against us. now i doubt any initiative no matter how grand or bright made by the USA would be anything but another failure.

and last iran is a multi cultural non arabic, multi lingual 10,000 year old civilization. today iran numbers almost 80 million people. They have every climate and terrain, a rich history of literature, art and scholarship. clearly their diplomatic corp are better rhetoricians. most importanly the iranian leader gave great advice. Mr. president, you can change the tone. bellicosity shuts ears. you want respect, give respect.

i suspect if everytime president bush carter/reagen/clinton spoke publically about iran he included a small bit of their rich history, commented on their art, poetry, languages, maybe even food. dropped a personal annecdote of an iranian friend ..... the message of a mutually safe world, respect and settlement of borders, the dangers of terroist infrastructure, and nuclear proliferation might fall on ears prepared to listen. rhetoric, what the iranians do so well and we fail at. you see diplomacy does not guarantee success, nor is it appeasement .... it can however guarantee that their is a possiblilty of success instead of the certain failure of our present course. the dummy light needs to shine, oooops, what do we really need? why? how would we best optain that? certainly we are not doing that now. any salesman will tell you the velvet hammer works best.

it is fairto say that the entire west muslim conflict is much more accurately framed as a rhetorical problem, and we are losing.

you might think "muslims only respect force" but that would be silly. tastey red meat, more of the same, drift to further real danger.

but until the west makes real gains as friends within the muslim community, chaos is the only sure result.

The hard questions
Forget about defending Wallace on the grounds that he couldn't ask the hard questions because the interview would have ended at that point. I heard him defending the Iranian leader to Sean Hannity on his radio program saying "He's a reasonable guy".
Give me a break! Hitler was regarded the same way by journalists the world over. All Wallace accomplished
was doing the Devil's handiwork by humanizing an evil, despicable and dangerous leader that the world should fear, not feel warmly and cozy about.

gc.....
So I guess in your words"bellicosity shuts ears. you want respect, give respect." is good for the goose but not the gander?

From the lips of the respectful Ahmadinejad

"We ask the West to remove what they created sixty years ago and if they do not listen to our recommendations, then the Palestinian nation and other nations will eventually do this for them,"

"How comes that insulting the prophet of Muslims worldwide is justified within the framework of press freedom, but investigating about the fairy tale Holocaust is not?"

"Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury."

"Israel is a rotten, dried tree that will be annihilated in one storm."

we say things equal in their distaste to iranians. i am not saying appease, or cease saying difficult things ....but to treat people as equal in intelligence and history. it improves the exchange ...in fact, as he said without it their is no communication that can yeild positive change.

Response to Jeff
Jeff says: "Since democracy, capitalism, free speech, and freedom are our culture and torture, rape, biggotry, r*cism, and s*xism are his culture..."

Thank you Jeff. You have perfectly summarised the major problem with right wingers: ALL of the aspects of our culture are good, ALL of the aspects of their culture are bad.

I think you people like to have very clear and bright lines of distinction because it makes you feel good about yourselves and where you stand in the world. But it's not the reality folks. The reality is much more complicated. This is not to say that the two cultures are equally good. It is also not to say that Iran is a good culture. It is also not to say that the US is a bad culture. Those answers would also be too simplistic.

The reality is that, if you were you to go to Iran, you would mostly see happy, intelligent, humble, compassionate, gentle, loving people. Of course, you would also see some mean, angry, greedy, vain, gluttonous, ignorant people, just like you do everywhere else.

But you people don't want to think about that because it would cause you to suffer from a massive attack of cognitive dissonance. It would destroy your nice, neat, clean world view.

Of course, you blame-America-never-folks also tend to ignore the fact that our culture has done some truly evil things to many countries around the world.

For instance, did you know, Jeff, that in 1953 our government overthrew their very popular, democratically elected leader, and then installed the Shaw, who was reviled by the population? The only reason we did this was because Mosedegh (the leader we overthrew) had the audacity to want to nationalize the oil reserves and use the funds to benefit all of the people in the country. British Petroleum would have none of it. So our CIA staged a coup on behalf of BP.

Judging cultures is not as simple as the Republican talking heads would like you all to believe.

Phylo out.

History not forgotten, foolish policy
Jeff, Here are a few nuggets for you to digest:
1) Yes some muslim sectarian groups are radical. No they all don't advocate the destruction of the west
2) Most of the radical groups, of whic Al Qaeda is the prime mover, wants the US to stop supporting ISRAEL (by providing material and/or financial support) and us to get out of their countries (first Saudi Arabia now IRAQ).
3) Al Qaeda hit us. Ignoring or forgetting this essential fact make you a fool - not me. We need to focus on knocking them out.
4) Hisbullah has not attacked us since we left Lebanon in 1986. They don't have a beef with us but with ISRAEL. Thusly, we now lump them with AL Qaeda as if to say ISRAEL's problem is now ours. This is just stupid, wrong and plain bad politics.
5) Hizbullah is made up Shia muslims, who abhor Al Qaeda Sunni leadership. If the neocon juggernaut had any geopolitcal/diplomatic sense or political skill it would pplay one against the other so we can team with the ugly Hisbullah and kill the evil Al Qaeda. But our "can't shoot' straight governing neo con gang only thinks in linear terms and a think DEMOCRACY will cure all ills. Never seen a more idiotic bunch in power.
6) I insist: We need to invade Pakistan and take over that country and get rid of the remnants of AL Qaeda there if tnhe Pakistanis can't do it on their own.

GC is right and wrong
You are right when you decry the idea that Muslims only react to force. That is incorrect in two areas. First, it is Arabs that we are talking about, not Muslims. Second, it is not force that they react to it is strength.

After having lived in Turkey for 2 years, and knowing many Turks, Lebanese, and other Arabs, I know somewhat how they think and behave.

One aspect of the Arab culture is one of hyperbole and extravagant claims. Another is loud and strident discussion. Screaming, crying, threatening, and boasting are not negatives and are not signs of anger. They are simply means of explaining your feelings and asking for proper resolution. Two Arab friends can be screaming at each other, waving their hands and threatening each others lives and families one moment and going out to dinner 5 minutes later.

One thing that Arabs hate most is meek and soft men. Spanish have a word for it - Machismo. Arabs buy into this in spades. If you apologize or talk meekly, they will think you are soft and weak. If you bluster and threaten, they will bluster back and back down if they are in the wrong or see their position as weaker.

Our kind, reasoned diplomats and our restrained actions and rhetoric tell them we are weak. You need to tailor your words to the hearing culture.

Johnny too too
Hmmmm
"Yes some muslim sectarian groups are radical. No they all don't advocate the destruction of the west" Can you name them? I certainly can't. Some have other agenda items before "death to America", but it is on all the lists.

"Most of the radical groups, of whic Al Qaeda is the prime mover, wants the US to stop supporting ISRAEL (by providing material and/or financial support) and us to get out of their countries (first Saudi Arabia now IRAQ)." Really? Have you gone to their web sites? They want Israel destroyed, and the Crusaders to leave Muslim lands. That includes all of the middle east, north Africa, Eastern Europe, Georgia and the southern parts of the former Soviet Union, Spain, Afghanistan, and India. They want us to stop "cultural imperialism" in that they want us to censor our books, movies, & TV.

"Al Qaeda hit us." This is both accurate and inaccurate. Al Qaeda is composed of: al Jihad, Islamic Group, National Islamic Front, and dozens of others, including Hezbollah.

4) Hisbullah has not attacked us since we left Lebanon in 1986. True. Their specific objective is the destruction of Israel. We are not there, so they just yell and ask people like you to help them disarm their enemy to make that destruction easier. I have no belief that even after they would be successful in that destuction that they would all go home and bake cookies.

"Hizbullah is made up Shia muslims, who abhor Al Qaeda Sunni leadership." This is a huge red herring. Shia and Sunni terrorists hate each other, but hate us more. They work together all of the time! Syria is Sunni and they work hand in glove with the Shias of Hezbollah.

"I insist: We need to invade Pakistan"
Oh, that is smart. Forget Iraq, a nation of 76 million and invade Pakistan (162 million) and who is working with us in many cases to eliminate the terrorists. That will go so much better, to invade a partial ally instead of a diametrically opposed nation (Iraq) with who we were still at war.

jeff
respectfully iranians are not arabic. every iranian i have ever spoken to has strong negative opinions of arabs. islam, like in many countrys is not native to iran / persia ....islam was imposed on persians.

no matter what we decide as geo politicaly correct positioning, all would benefit from learning more, respecting more, trying to understand with their cultural eyes ......even in war this only benefits the west.

Journalistic Limbo: How low can he go?
This interview was a low point even in Mike Wallace's low-road career. Shame on him. Shame on CBS.

Thank you Dennis Prager.

gc, sorry if I was unclear
I agree that Iran is not Arab. Sorry. The Arabs are the desert people and the people of the Med. The Persians are Iran & Iraq. Not the same folk at all.

That said, to my understanding, they do hold many of the same character traits as Arabs. However due to their long imperial history, they are more reasonable to diplomacy. However, they still love the hyperbole.

jeff
i'm sorry
the people of iraq are not and have never been anything but arab. iraqies arabs, iranians not arabs. in our context, turks and iranians are not arabs ......the other countries discussed are .....except israel i guess.

and i think if you told iranians that they were the same culturally as arabs you could expose yourself to danger. they are not even close

but exactly my point. thank you. if the western leaders when commenting on muslim countries used compliments, information and acknowledgement in their messages maybe we all would be better informed, and our ability to communicate interculturally would be improved ....duh.

i mean come on people, have none of you read kayam.... ???

CBS Article
Dennis' only wrong point in the entire article is thinking that CBS' "knowingly" running the piece was not "deliberate."

Mike Wallace
At least Ronald Reagan had the class to withdraw from the public when his Alzheimer's took hold. CBS keeps trotting out their doddering old fools hoping we won't notice they are senile. But I think even Ahmadinejad noticed Wallace should have been put out to pasture long ago.

For gc...
if the western leaders when commenting on muslim countries used compliments, information and acknowledgement in their messages maybe we all would be better informed, and our ability to communicate interculturally would be improved

What compliments would be the most effective? We like the way you keep your women folk in line? Arresting people solely on the basis of their religious faith is an intresting way of showing religious tolerance, or some information perhaps! Iran has the highest proportion of heroin addicts in the world, In the south Tehran quarter of Maulavi, a gram of heroin goes for as little as 3,000 rials (40 US cents) or some acknowedment might go far on halting the wacky idea that Israel is the problem with Islam so here goes, Boy Iran makes some nice rugs! Boy I feel better now that I have made that all clear and we are now having a meaningful dialogue

thank you for making my point. you sound just like muslims seeking to point out each negative they find abhorant about the west. and likely they shut down in the same way you would if they pointed out americans like to kill people by remote control, that after slavery we continued with racism, or our history with mexico or american indians ....maybe the japanese internment, etc etc ..... the point is, the middle east has a rich culture you know nothing about ..... telling an iranian he is an illeducated facist mysogenist before you try to negotiate is not functional ....duh.

do you really think we can beat the sense into billions of people? have you had children? was it the most effective way of living with conflict? seems some growing up is needed in diplomacy

gc... please
What does he find abhorant about the west? that we can chose our own Religion? that our Women have rights? That Mullahs don't choose or Presidential candidates? We kill by remote control? that's silly everyone knows we kill by ESP, How should we kill our enemies?, with posion gas, or maybe stoning or maybe suicde belts, and slavery we in the USA were late commers and early extinguishers of that human trade that they still pratice in some muslem countries ie. Sudan P.S. it wasn't Native born Americans that started in with the Indians it was Europeans, maybe we should relive the diplomacy of the Carter years and speak well of a madman as Carter did with Khomeini, Perhaps you are right that one can not beat sense into billions of silent but still culpible because of that silence Muslems but one can try to expose the billions of non-muslems to the truth about what they are up against and not put a happy face on a madman for the sake of ratings.

I cant believe you think that one can reason with a man who's avowed goal is to ready the earth for the comming of the 12th imam who he believes will bring absolute peace and justice throughout the world by establishing Islam as the global religion, But first Israel must be destroyed, Do you have your prayer rugs ready GC?

P.S. gc.....
I lived in Saudi for 9 years so I know something about the culture... I also know that nonrepresentational theocracies
of the Muslem word are a problem not only for us but for the unfortunate citizen of the countries in question, and you are advocating that we should diolouge with them to find out why they want Islam to be yours and my only choice or die for not making the correct choice seems shall we say naive at the least....

P. double S. gc....
And if your so knowledgeable about Middle Eastern culture please enlighten us.....What can they offer the world? What goods other than textiles, Oil and date palms do they produce, How many books have been translated into Arabic, Awww that isn't fair of me so I'll tell you the total number of books translated into Arabic during the 1,000 years since the age of Caliph Al-Ma’moun [a ninth-century Arab ruler who was a patron of cultural interaction between Arab, Persian, and Greek scholars—WPR] to this day is less than those translated in Spain in one year. so it sounds to me that we are more knowledgeable about their culture they they are of mine, Why is it that Arab rulers stay in office all their lives and create dynasties that inherit power, and the peoples are unable to institute change, Please enlighten me....

**Optimist Conservatives
Why does anyone give CBS any credibility.

There's something like bigotry at play. And a logical fallacy,

One of the major logical fallacies is called poisoning the well. The person who uses it may or may not be a bigot. But he or she is appealing to bigots.

For example, reaonable people can disagree on the value of Mike Wallace's interview.

The anti-thinker simple dismisses it by attacking the network. He or she is poisoning the well -- the source -- a form of personal attack that avoids have to actually prove anything.

In over recent post here, the poster said he had googled an issue and then posted a complete transcript from the CNN website.

One forum member was upset that google had been used, and suggested other search engines.

Another upset forum member probably explained the first one, by proclaiming that CNN isnot a reliable source.

Poisoning the well. Not just failing to think -- refusing to think.

Here's one definition:

"Poisoning the well is a logical fallacy where adverse information about someone is presented to an audience, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything that person is about to say, or has said. Poisoning the well is a special case of argumentum ad hominem."

What's so amusing (and sometimes scary) is when these people angrily defend their personal attacks.

Keep that in mind, when you hear certain phrases used as a reason to dismiss an argument or fact.

1) The MSM

2) The New York Times

3) CBS

4) A liberal (or lefty)

That person, by definiton, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything another person is about to say, or has said.

Tell me this, how does going to Journalism school give you any credibility or knowledge of how the world works.

Well, thst explains a lot. You have confused news pieces with commentary.

Journalism is the factual reporting of what happened.

**Optimist Conservatives
Mainstream media says they are the gatekeepers. So this means people who have no qualifications or education of any subject aquire the information and distribute it in a manner to create a conclusion that they percieve is accurate?

See? You really don't know. First you ask us to tell you. Then you form a conclusion based on a fallacy.

Avoiding statements like that is one reason people go to journalism school.

Presenting material in a manner to create a conclusion is the exact opposite of Journalism. It is commentary, also known as an OPINION piece (or propaganda).

Thus, you don't know the difference between journalism and opinion -- not my opinion -- a fact based on your own words.

Here's your card.

It’s time to “really” retire......
The only thing worse than a fool is an “old” fool. I would hope with age a person might gain a little more wisdom and insight. In this case, an understanding or perception of the real dangers facing the civilized world today. To think, at one point in my life, when much younger, I had a certain admiration for this journalist.

If he were interviewing the U.S. President, his questions would be hard-hitting and focused on the real issues. But we can’t expect the liberal MSM to honestly report on tyrannical despots or rogue nations for fear of offending delicate sensitivities. The interviewee must be thinking “Ah! Another useful idiot”.

Advice: Save the “fluff” questions for the Hollywood types.

Cowards
Isn't that the bottom line for these Main Stream Joournalists. They are afraid to speak truth to power when there could be consequences. Dan Rather with Saddam was the same. Their fear of running those Mohammed cartoons showed the same cowardice. And maybe the reason they gave the Clinton's such a pass was fear of what they were capable of. Remember the FBI files the Clinton's had. Maybe it was just wanting to sit at the cool kid's table or their normal socialist group think, but maybe down deep it was fear of retribution.

Pilgrim
Actually, no, IN FACT, that is NOT the 'correct spelling'. The monster's name is CORRECTLY spelled in Arabic (Farci, right?), and any English translation is merely a representation of how the name is spelled. It's like "Osama bin Laden" verus "Usama bin Laden", or "Sadam Husane" versus "Saddam Hussein". Neither are "correct", they are merely English pronouciations of the name.

Phylo Se Fizer
You again demonstrate why it is YOU who is stupid. I believe Prager effectively proved that there is no debate whatsoever. It isn't a matter of the cultures being "different" or "equal". It is a matter of one culter, though flawed, at least trying to be moral, and a collection of brutal monsters who demonstrate that there IS, in fact, hypothetical instances where genocide is the appropriate response. Any society that belives torturing victems of rape constitutes justice themselves deserves to be the victem of genocide. Period.

A-madman-in-jihad...
...took me awhile to figure that one out. Of course it's not the "correct" spelling, Beowulfe. It's like Madman Insane, my favorite way of referring to Saddam Hussein a few years back. We had a picture of him on the wall at which we had fun tossing darts to see who could get him between the eyes.

Yes, childish. But sometimes you have to vent your frustration.

In the novel I'm currently working on, called "The Gordian Knot," I finally figured out part of the reason the Islamic Extremists hate us and call the US the Great Satan. It's because of the culture of corruption spawned by the Democrats in one form or another since the founding of the country (and probably before).

We complain about secular humanism setting the individual up as G*d, and the consequences in the form of "anything goes." But we're used to it, and we know that it's an ongoing battle between those in this country who choose to walk on the bright side of the Golden Rule and those who do not. We see the country as being about evenly split between the responsible and the irresponsible.

BUT, how--or rather from whom--do the majority of the people in the Middle East get their view of us? You guessed it--from the MSM, AP, Reuters, the Beeb (BBC), and also from our movies. How do you explain "Brokeback Mountain" to these people? Since all they get through our media is a blast of filth from the culture of corruption and none of the good that also happens here (because if it's good, it isn't news), how could they believe we are anything but evil and be very afraid of us? Hate rises as much out of fear as it does out of love soured by too many disappointments.

This is not to excuse their overreaction, or their determination to destroy Israel and the U.S. But it does explain part of the link between the culture of corruption growing out of secular humanism, held with religious fervor by many among the Democratic Party, and the Islamo-Nazis like "Amadmaninjihad." If you want more information about that connection, check out my blog, specifically the 7/23 post "An Interesting Take on Islam."

So, yes, Phylo, we DO need to consider the problems in our culture and decide whether we're going to go on allowing the culture of corruption to ooze out of our country and afflict the rest of the world, or get off our couches and say to secular humanism and all of its adherents, "enough already. You will either choose to walk on the bright side of the Golden Rule and act accordingly by treating everyone you deal with as an equal, with respect unless attacked, or on the dark side of the Golden Rule and bring on yourself the death you long to dish out to everyone else."

BTW, thanks to all you regulars on both sides of the aisle. Without your comments, I wouldn't have such an interesting tale to tell. Check my blog from time to time for progress reports. I'll let you know when it's available for download.

Yeah, including that commie creap Thomas Jefferson

Great satire! But are you sure you want to ridicule the modern conservative mindset so heavily?

Then again, it has been the MSM speading West Nile Virus into the red states.

Thomas Jefferson, et al
I'm glad you like my "satire," Anti-Partisan Righty. However, I'm not a fan of Mr. Jefferson and I did not intend my comments to be taken as satire.

While I'm not the history buff my husband is, I have read quite a few biographies of our founding fathers this year, starting with "Hamilton," and also "His Excellency" (George Washington). Yes, Mr. Jefferson had a great deal to do with the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, but that doesn't mean he was terribly effective as a person or as a president. Also, if it is, in fact, true that he fathered children by someone other than his wife (even if he wasn't the only one of the founding fathers to do so), that doesn't speak very well for his moral behavior on a personal level.

I have also recently read "A Team of Rivals," about President Lincoln, the development of the Republican Party, and the run-up to the Civil War (to say nothing of the war itself). The characterization of the Democrats, especially the Southern Democrats of the time, as being determined to do whatever it took to maintain slavery as an institution was VERY interesting. Among other things, they tried not only to force all the new states coming into the Union be slave states (whether they wanted to be or not), but they wanted to force the entire country to be slave. Maybe it was "just a few Senators" but they were vicious, both in word and deed, and so were their followers. Even my "Roadsides of Kansas"--mainly a geology book--mentions the attacks by the pro-slavery forces from Missouri--along with the Bogus Legislature that tried to make Kansas a slave state. The Kansans still haven't forgotten that. But read "Team of Rivals" for yourself. I'm not going to try to cite references here.

Others have done far better than I to show that it has been the Republicans who have done the most (or at least tried, only to be smashed by the Democrat power structure) to make it possible for those descended of the slaves to learn how to make the most of their freedom to choose, so I won't go into that.

What you may find interesting is that I was raised a Democrat. My father, a retired college professor, is still a "flaming" liberal. We do not discuss politics.

He once asked me how I felt about abortion. I believe it is murder, no matter how you slice it, even in cases of rape or incest, because it isn't the baby's fault its parents were irresponsible. The logical end point of this assertion is that we as individuals have a duty to our children, born and unborn, to be responsible, and to help each other learn how to treat each other as equals, so that rape or incest happens rarely, if at all. (I have written a novel about this.)

My father believes abortion should not only be available on demand but that it should be used by most people because they shouldn't have kids in the first place. The logical end point of that assertion is that most people are terminally stupid and should be sterilized to prevent them from passing their stupidity on to future generations. That begs the question of who determines who is allowed to procreate?

I have no use whatever for the Democratic Party, especially in its current ridiculous incarnation, because I believe that its very philosophic underpinnings are hypocritical lies. It's all about power for them. All about tricking people into thinking they can give up their responsibility to anyone else and not reap the disastrous consequences of their choice to be irresponsible. I've watched those consequences unfold over the last 40 some years, and I fear for the future.

Because there is very little I can do as an individual (other than be politically involved at a local level with the Republican Party), I work on space development in the hopes that the sensible will join me in creating havens here on Earth and out there that are capable of withstanding the large scale destruction I see coming, be it from our own stupidity as a species or from the completely impersonal impact of a comet or asteroid such as wiped out 90% of life at the end of the Permian, or the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous. And I write novels for my own comfort and perhaps that of others of good will.

As far as I'm concerned, the Democrats are already in hell--and they want to drag all the rest of us into hell with them. If you want to live in hell, fine. Just don't try to convince me I do.

Re: Anti-Partisan_Righty
They wanted ratings and it was at the cost of giving a madman and an enemy a forum to recruit and sway ~ And anyways why the Islamophobia header ? are you some kind of Islamic Cheerleader ? in my book being Islamophobia is called being realistic, give me one reason I shouldn't fear Islam seeing that I am not a muslem ~ I'd think that even non-jihadic muslem would be Islamophobic as they share the fate of every infidel as shown by the fact that Islam kills more muslems than the rest of the world combined ~ by the way in perusing your posts I must ask have you gone so righty that your a lefty ?

I guess I get flaged
So whats so bad about Islamophobia ? I think it's just good sense to be phobic about a religion in which "smiting heads" is all in a days work for a hard working jihadist ~ Ask any non-jihadist muslem and he'll tell you.... or maybe he wont for fear of being labled an infidel and getting smited his ownself ~ Wallace was going for ratings at the expense of the truth and should be ashamed !

Outstanding article on CBS interview
CBS is an embarrassment to our country and what we stand for. I simply will not waste my time in watching their dribble. I watched Mike Wallace make a complete fool of himself and I knew in advance that he would. I say enough is enough.
