Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Imagine someone saying that he seeks the destruction of Italy because he regards Italian national identity as racist. Further, imagine that this person constantly denies being anti-Italian, because he does not hate all Italians, only Italy and all those who believe Italy should exist.

Now substitute "Jewish" for "Italian" and "Israel" for "Italy" and you understand the absurdity of the argument that one can be anti-Zionist but not anti-Jewish.

Among the many lies that permeate the modern world, none is greater -- or easier to refute -- than the claim that Zionism is not an integral part of Judaism or the claim that anti-Zionism is unrelated to antisemitism.

In order to understand why, it is first necessary to explain Zionism and anti-Zionism.

A modern secular movement called Zionism was founded in the 19th century, but the belief that Jews belong in Zion (the biblical term for Jerusalem) is as old as the Jewish people. See Part One of this series, "Explaining Jews," for a discussion of why Jews are a people and not only a religion.

Starting in 586 B.C., with the destruction of the first Jewish state, Jews were already Zionists in that they fervently prayed to return to Zion. While the movement known by the specific name "Zionism" is modern, the movement of Jews returning to Zion is more than 2,500 years old. That is why the claim that Zionism -- the return of the Jewish people to Zion -- is not part of Judaism is a theological and historical lie.

Judaism has always consisted of three components: God, Torah and Israel, roughly translated as faith, practice and peoplehood. And this Jewish people was conceived of as living in the Jewish country called Israel. One can argue that the modern state of Israel was founded at the expense of Arabs living in the geographic area known as Palestine (there was never a country or a nation called Palestine); but that in no way negates the indisputable fact that Zionism is an integral part of Judaism. Nor does the fact that some Jews who have abandoned Judaism are opposed to Zionism, nor that a tiny sect of ultra-Orthodox Jews (Neturei Karta) believe that only the Messiah can found a Jewish state in Israel.

When anti-Israel Muslim students demonstrate on campus chanting, "Yes to Judaism, No to Zionism," they are inventing a new Judaism out of their hatred for Israel. It would be as if anti-Muslims marched around chanting, "Yes to Allah, No to the Quran." Just as Allah, Muhammad and the Quran are inextricable components of Islam, so God, Torah and Israel are of Judaism.

But, one might argue, even if Zionism is as much a part of Judaism as any other part of the Hebrew Bible, the modern Jewish state of Israel has no right to exist because it displaced many indigenous Arabs, known later as Palestinians. Continued...

rtommer's Flawed Anti-"Neo-Con" Argument
rtommer said:

"No one is arguing that Zionism is not a part of Judaism; rather the reverse is the matter:

1. Jews want to control the Middle-East.
2. Israel has a disproportionate amount of influence in the U.S., through the media, our elected representatives, the banks, the corporate culture.
3. Anyone who even points this out is immediately labeled an "anti-semite", the equivalent of calling someone a "heretic" in the 17th century."

rtommer: Hey there, Mr. Pot...Be careful what you say about the Kettle. In other words, your argument (if one can call it that) is flawed itself.

I fail to see how your cute three point syllogism explains what the problem is with Zionism. Your premises are completely wrong, and therefore your conclusion is completely wrong. But, hey, since when did incorrect premises get in the way of validating anti-semetic conclusions, right?

To clarify:
1. Jews do not want to control the middle East. Jews would, however, like for their historical, biblical, and CURRENT homeland to be left alone so that they may live in peace in that tiny sliver of 8,000 sqaure miles of real estate wedged in between 5,000,000 square miles of unadulterated antisemitic rage. Would you care to back up this premise with anything other than your hatred for or ignorance of Israel. I can back up mine with the repeated attempts of Israel to give away "land for peace" (see, e.g., Gaza, Sinai, Lebanon, etc., etc., etc.).

2. I doubt you really have read Mr. Prager's other columns, or else you have a terribly weak memory (or a terribly strong intentional ignorance), as he demonstrated that the Jews who "influence" media, culture, banking, etc. are almost always "non-Jewish Jews." I could further shred this bit of anti-semitism to shreds (the whole "disproportionate influence" argument), but I have neither the time nor inclination (for a swell "conservative" like yourself) to do so.

3. As Mr. Prager said, if you advocate for the destruction of Israel, you are an anti-semite. Though you remain "neutral" on the U.S. role in standing by to allow Israel's destruction (and therefore I cannot conclusively say you are an anti-semite based on that), I can, in fact, conclude you are anti-semitic based on your blazing ignorance of Israel and on your need to post comments displaying such ignorance without considering their merit.

You also say that "this 'conservative' townhall needs more actual conservatives, and fewer neo-cons." I say any conservative townhall would do better without voices like yours.

Regards,

Your friendly neo-con neighbor

Prager's Flawed Argument
I've enjoyed your series, Mr. Prager. I want to compliment you on taking the initiative to get right to the heart of the matter. However, this final installment mars the rest with its flawed argument of anti-semitism and anti-zionism.

No one is arguing that Zionism is not a part of Judaism; rather the reverse is the matter:

1. Jews want to control the Middle-East.
2. Israel has a disproportionate amount of influence in the U.S., through the media, our elected representatives, the banks, the corporate culture.
3. Anyone who even points this out is immediately labeled an "anti-semite", the equivalent of calling someone a "heretic" in the 17th century.

Your argument is an old one (AND flawed) in that the Jews (for some reason) deserve to have Israel, because it's their "homeland". South Dakota is the home of the Sioux Indians, and they're not getting it back. Why? Because they were conquered in the 19th century. The Jews were conquered in the 1st century.

Should the Jews conquer the Palestinians? Does might make right?

I say that Israel should do what they can, without the help of my tax dollars. I am not under the strange spell of this tiny postage stamp of a country, or the Jews who seem to be in control of mine. Call me an "anti-semite" if you want.

By the way, this "conservative" townhall needs more actual conservatives, and fewer neo-cons.
