Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

American voters want -- and President Obama campaigned on a platform of -- European-style government at American tax rates.

Consider the Obama take on GM's and Chrysler's extended hand for another Washington bailout. Obama recognizes that the Detroit automakers are in trouble because of pension and retiree health care costs and quality issues, but his focus Monday was on the failure of GM and Chrysler to manufacture the "fuel-efficient cars and trucks that will carry us toward an energy-independent future." That's the happy conceit of Democrats who -- their own personal driving habits and what you see on the nation's highways every day notwithstanding -- have determined that Americans really prefer driving small, fuel-efficient cars in the style of Our Betters in Europe.

Now, with gasoline in the $2 per gallon range, Obama's brainstorm for a successful business model is to create "the next generation of clean cars." Get it: GM and Chrysler are in trouble because their cars weren't liberal enough.

It helps if you forget that the Big Three cranked out big cars for years because Americans bought them in the days before gasoline hit $4 per gallon.

Here's the European-government-with-American-taxes angle: If Obamaland believes it is in the interest of America's national security to drive fuel-efficient cars, the only sure route there is to levy higher gasoline taxes -- as they do in Europe.

Look at France, where taxes account for about 70 percent of the price of gasoline, compared to less than 17 percent in the United States. Our Betters in Europe pay some $5 to $6.50 per gallon of gas -- or 2.5 to three times more than Americans pay. That's why Europeans drive smaller cars. And that's why European carmakers design smaller cars.

Instead, Obama plans to push Americans into buying his promised "new generation of clean cars" with -- you guessed it -- lower taxes. This week, he supported "a generous credit to consumers who turn in old, less fuel-efficient cars and purchase cleaner cars." That's on top of an Obama stimulus provision that allows consumers to deduct sales and excise taxes for cars bought between Feb. 16 and the end of the year.

There's a logic deficit to the whole approach.

If the administration truly wants Americans to drive smaller cars, it needs to instill in automakers utter certainty that gasoline prices will rise and stay at very high rates. Short-term tax credits can't do that, as they leave carmakers unsure of what families will buy and afraid of losing the cushy-sized car market.

Raising the gasoline tax gradually but continuously is the only sure way to meet Obama's fuel-efficiency agenda. But Obama won't propose it because there is no way to hide the tax. Every time drivers fill their tanks, they'll see the price tag and know who put it there.

His entire 2008 campaign was based on telling voters they could get more government programs to promote health care, education and his environmental agenda -- but 95 percent of families would not have to pay for it. When asked in a debate with rival John McCain what sacrifices he would ask Americans to make, Obama answered, "There is going to be the need for each and every one of us to start thinking about how we use energy." That's right, his sacrifice wasn't in the pocketbook -- except for families earning more than $250,000 -- his sacrifice was in asking voters to think.

Consider Obama's campaign pledge to deliver universal access to health care. Say this for the French, they pay for their services; they pay a value-added tax of up to 19.6 percent and a 40 percent tax rate for income above some $88,313. But at the 2008 convention, the Democratic platform asserted that under ObamaCare, the "typical American family" would save "up to $2,500 per year." European services, American taxes -- with a bonus.

Who really pays? The future taxpayers of America saddled with rapidly accumulating debt.

There you have the real Obama model -- Europe, but on lower U.S. tax rates. This combo makes for an unsustainable model. Like Chrysler.

Liberals love taxes.

Liberals love high taxes because the less money people have to pay for their own healthcare, education, housing, food, and retirement, the more they will depend on government.

When you depend on government you must jump through government hoops in order to qualify. You lose freedom of choice, freedom of self determination, and loss of self empowerment.

Cigarette tax, Alcohol Tax, Gasoline Tax, Phone Tax, cable TV tax are all designed to keep poor people poor and dependant upon government.

Class warfare is designed to direct the anger of poor people toward the rich and away from Liberals who are keeping them poor.

The USA is not Europe!
No country in Europe is as diverse as the USA in any way shape or form.

Thus, just having small, fuel efficient cars susch as are found in western Europe won't meet the needs of citizens in the rural areas of our country, especially in places like Wyoming, Kansas and New Mexico.

The small models seen in France and Italy would be great in our cities and suburban areas, but not on the Great Plains. My husband and I have found that some of the vehicles, especially those made by Ford, are quite attractive. Why can they not be shipped here or made here. Our polution controls are a lot stricter and the emissions technology would have to be reworked.

Obama's one size fits all mentality denies the very diversity he purpots to champion.

An opportunity for the GOP
Someone with a brain in the Republican Party needs to calculate the hidden taxes that are about to impact those foolish people who thought only those making over $250,000 were going to see any increase in their taxes.

They need to break it out in terms of actual percentage increases as a function of increases in fuel costs, the coming skyrocketing cost of electricty becuase of "cap and trade," taxes on everyday activities from movies to soda, not to mention the new cigarette tax.

And if you think higher energy costs will only be limited to power, think again, everything that requires significant power to manufacture will go up by equal amounts.

If the average American knew just how much his actual taxes are going up, they would blow their stacks. Are their any Republicans with both the brains and the brass to compile and publish this dirty little secret.

Whiners Keep On Whining

It started with the Great Society, then The Dumbing Down Of America, and continued with parents' giving their children everything even if it bankrupted the households. Now, we have the whiners, who have never done anything, demanding even more.

Take a look at the New York Time's slime of the clownish behavior in London during the G20:

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/02/protesters-fail -to-bring-down-global-capitalism-with-costumes-puppets/

And, guess what? The whiners are coming to New York City in September for the next G20 meeting.

Uunintended consequences
An unintended consequence of having a $3.00 floor for gas would be that it would make more fuel available from the Indians and Chinese, which would allow their economies to grow while we would stagnate. The oil that we don't buy will not stay in the ground. It will be sold to others and the oil money that goes to people who don't like us will still keep flowing. It would be better to increase the amount of oil that we produce ourselves, which would lower the world price, and reduce the money flow to other oil producers.

It won't matter
With fuel efficiency, people will just drive more. They are more likely to drive less if they have a guzzler. People won't buy those "VOLTS" and I foresee a giant jump to Toyota, except for pickup trucks.

A correction for Jerseyvet
I meant to say that Debra is "one of the few columnists FOR GROAT MEDIA writing in fluent Americanese..." (since a lot of groat columnists have grammar/semantics similar to those of "killer").

A floor under gasoline
For many years now, I have advocated putting a tax floor under gasoline. That is, the Federal tax on gasoline should be constantly adjusted, so that the pump price of unleaded gas NEVER goes below $3.00 a gallon. (And that number should be adjusted for inflation in future years.)

If American drivers know that the pump price will NEVER AGAIN go below $3.00 a gallon, that will be a major incentive for them to purchase fuel-efficient cars. If the world price of oil would push the price of gasoline much higher, say to $4.00 or $5.00 a gallon, the Federal tax would be automatically reduced to cushion the blow to drivers.

Skip The Teabags

Send a cigarette (fa-g) or an empty cigarette box instead since Mugabe has broken another campaign promise (no one making a penny under $250K will see a tax increase) in order to "save the children".

As for wackiness, a British researcher recently said that tea is a carcinogenic! Of course, not wanting to slam the national pastime, he advised letting your cup cool for 5 minutes!

Also, I wonder if Gordon Brown wasn't so chummy with Mugabe because he wanted another bailout??? And, you my fellow Americans will be on the hook for the GBP because Mugabe might not like Churchill, but he loves playing "Money Messiah".

Obama's Generous Credit for cars
First, do you know where this money is coming from? The states, like Texas, that refused to take the stimulus money. That's right, 185 billion was refused so he wants to use the money this way.

And there are some catches. First, you have to have an old clunker - which generally limits who can get the money. Second, it is only for a new car from GM. Not every company. We have something similar here in Texas to get the bad cars off the road. Most of the people who can take advantage of this cannot afford the payments on the new cars. Waste of money.

Ms.Kelly
From what basis do you derive your opinion. The purpose of writing is to communicate with your readers. Old people don't understand that language has changed. My writing serves my purpose. You may feel free to pass by my post every time. We will never agree politically,so let us accept that and "Move On". I am confident in my writing. The message will not "Change",nor will the "Challenges". President Obama and the First Lady looked like the "Bomb". The aforementioned statement has an intended "Context". Can you guess what it is?

Killer in GA - orphaned at Birth
Please everyone take pity on poor little "Killer in GA", he cannot help himself as he was Orphaned at birth and evidently never knew his real parents. He no doubt was adopted by some Liberal Woodstock Babies. Afraid that being an Orphan would seriously damage his self esteem, they named this poor pathetic creature "Killer".

jerseyvet
You must not be too familiar with killer's writing. This is actually completely normal for him. And, hard as it is to believe, I have seen much worse from killer.

I guess his name is indicative of the way he murders the English language. LOL.

Immigration stats answered that
over a decade ago.

Number of Canuckistanis living legally (on temp work or dependent visas or Green Cards) in US: 660K

Number of Americans correspondingly living in Canada (note, not exactly true--Canada tempworker dependant visa holders can also work, unlike those in US): about 8K.

And, to reinforce:
(*) even European leaders aren't exactly enthused by EU-socialism
(*) Putin--an ex-KGB chief--gave "horse's mouth" warning to Oblunder that Socialism is disastrous/catastrophic
(*) even Canuckistan voted out in 2006 a socialist party for one advocating fiscal responsibility (albeit as minority government) and returned it to power last year (again as minority, but less of a seat-deficit than in 2006).

Jerseyvet (08:39), brain-dead idiot ("killer") wasn't using that term of Denise, but of the columnist (who is actually one of the few actually writing in fluent Americanese--not the same as "true" English, such as spoken in Oxford or Doncaster); on the nail that his post was cent-percent bakvas.

jerseyvet
I have asked you in the past, not to read my post. "Worshiping" at my "Altar" is not allowed,by you. Please just say NO? She is "Stupid"! You on the hand, exceed my imagination!

Product of Our Education System?
Killer: "America's progress has been apprehended by it's past failures. President Obama is trying to "Pry" it loose. I realize that you and others have to make "Political Hay". But Damn, you are "Stupid",if this is your best effort."

You're calling Denise "stupid" when this is the most ungrammatical, misspelled paragraph I've seen in a long time. That first sentence belongs in the encyclopedia of gobbledygook! Denise deserves her diploma but obviously you were taught by a mediocre English teacher. Jeez!

FUEL EFFICIENCY BASED ON FALSE PREMISE
The push for smaller fuel efficient cars is based on the spposed need to decrease CO2 emissions.

The motivation to decrease CO2 emissions is based on the premise that CO2 causes mam-made global warming.

But more & more scientists believe that man-made global warming based on CO2 is a hoax.

If man-made global warming based on CO2 is a hoax or false premise then there is no need for smaller cars.

Lesson in Economics
Question: What's the difference between Obama's vision of America and Zimbabwe?

Ans.: Only a matter of time.

Debra
To call you a "Dummy" would be an insult to "Dummies". Small cars equal less gas, which equals more money to spend in other areas of the economy. I know you can't be so dumb,as not to see this. Health Care should have been redesigned 30 years ago. Unions have membership, which can and should dictate the their level of care. In fact Unions could design their own health care model and hire their own Doctors. America's students are some of the most "Technologically" advanced students in the world. Yet everyone is forced to attend "Outdated" schools because Teachers need Jobs. America's progress has been apprehended by it's past failures. President Obama is trying to "Pry" it loose. I realize that you and others have to make "Political Hay". But Damn, you are "Stupid",if this is your best effort.

Rumor Has It...

That Obama flew to London with an entourage of 500, which includes:

His Barackness
Lady Macbeth
David Axis of Evil
The Captain and Co-Captain.
The Chef
Three flight attendants.
and, 491 Teleprompters.
