Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

From the day President Bush took office, the long knives were out for him -- in ways they will not (and should not) be out for President-elect Barack Obama. The chattering class saw Dubya as a walking style crime in a cowboy suit. They hit Bush for everything -- for the way he mangled syntax, for the books he read and because he worked out too much.

Note that now that the buff Obama is taking office, stories gushing about Obama's daily workouts flood the channels. Oh, yes, and the same people who belittled Bush for sending troops to war even though he only served in the National Guard somehow do not seem to notice Obama's utter lack of military experience.

To trash Bush was to belong. There was little upside in supporting Bush, even if you had supported his agenda.

Most of the Democratic candidates for president in 2004 and 2008 voted for the Patriot Act -- and then campaigned against it. They voted for the resolution authorizing U.S. military force in Iraq -- then bolted from the war itself. Likewise with No Child Left Behind. Somehow Bush was the guy who looked bad as he withstood the heat while his caving critics preened.

When the Dems were pushing for a humiliating retreat from Iraq and opinion polls supported troop withdrawal, Bush instead pushed for a troop surge that has made all the difference. Vice President-elect Joe Biden -- who voted for the war before he was against it -- visited Iraq last week. While there, he promised the Iraqis that America would not withdraw troops in a way that undermines Iraqi security. Yet that was exactly what his party advocated a year ago.

Does Bush get any credit? No, just as he has received little credit for efforts that have prolonged millions of lives, thanks to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Forget considerable goodwill in India and Africa. His good deeds, you see, don't fit with the prescribed story line that, with Bush in charge, the rest of the world hates us.

Yes, the man also stumbled, and others paid for his mistakes more dearly than he has.

Under Bush's watch, Osama bin Laden evaded capture.

Worse, Bush's slowness in changing strategies in Iraq suggested a presidency in a fetal position when Bush should have been managing the store and demanding results.

Weapons of mass destruction? The CIA believed Saddam Hussein had them.

So did Hussein's lieutenants. I did, too. The conventional wisdom was wrong, but Bush can take comfort in the knowledge that without his efforts, Hussein almost certainly would have outlasted U.N. sanctions, armed himself to the hilt and wreaked unknown havoc in and beyond Iraq.

There is no comfort -- there is no upside -- to be had in the $810 billion Bush bailout. The Bush administration should have been on alert to contain the damage from the housing-price drop and mortgage foreclosures; instead, it allowed the credit crunch to reach a tipping point and roll over the U.S. economy. It was so avoidable. It was like the Katrina trailers all over again -- except this preventable and unnatural disaster left toxic trailers strewn across America.

There's an out-to-lunch sloppiness to the whole mess. It feels as if the barrage of criticism made the Bush engine seize up and stop running the business of the nation.

America's first MBA president turned out to be a poor administrator, more interested in ideas than making the machinery work. He was good at fighting -- and winning -- ideological battles in Congress, but he never demonstrated a commitment to making his own administration deliver as promised. In putting loyalty at a premium, he overlooked incompetence.

How will history judge Bush?

Osama bin Laden once told Time magazine that the U.S. withdrawal from Somalia after the murder of 18 U.S. troops on a humanitarian mission made him realize "more than before that the American soldier was a paper tiger and after a few blows ran in defeat." Members of al-Qaida have told intelligence officials they never thought Washington would respond to the 9/11 attacks as ferociously as Bush responded. They expected a few bombs to be dropped, no boots on the ground, a swift withdrawal if casualties mounted -- the usual short-attention span foreign policy that warped Lebanon, the Persian Gulf War, Somalia, the African embassy bombings and the attack on the destroyer Cole.

Bush showed America's enemies a country that does not retreat in fear, does not bomb with impunity, and most important, does not desert civilians or foreign governments that trust us. If you think that doesn't matter, look at Libya, which disarmed its weapons program. And see how much easier Obama's presidency will be because Bush kept the faith.

Osama bin Laden may live, most likely quivering in a cave. And no one thinks America is a paper tiger anymore.

Oh joy
Yet, another column on the wonderfulness of our soon to be ex-prez.

nightmare ends

No looking back. If Bush truly was as wonderful and "misunderestimated" as the author alludes to, there would be no reason to defend him, because his approval rating would have reflected it.

Bush had one of the highest approval ratings immediately after 9/11, and the support of nearly every American. He and only he is responsible for losing much of it.

DDL & no-mo-brains: You and your liberal

idiot friends are about as low-class and tasteless and anyone could imagine.

But, get ready to kiss your classless butts goodbye when Bozo and Panetta dismantle the CIA and everything that Pres. Bush put in place to keep even YOUR ugly, ungrateful butts safe!

And, who said this, or any column was written to "defend" Pres. Bush or anyone? Just you and your demented little minds.

Geeze, what a bunch of children you libs are!

Children
Call others names. I really don't mind if I read comments calling politicians or members of the media names or insults who are not participants in discussions, but to do so to active participants is rude and immature behavior, IMO. I can honestly say that I have never stooped to anyone else's level of name-calling or hurling insults on any messageboard, no matter how viciously I was personally attacked instead of the opinion that I shared.

I am willing to bet that conservatives like Anne never, or at best rarely post their viewpoints on websites that are dominated by liberals or moderates. They are looking for validation, admiration, and commiseration from their like-minded peers, not debates with people who might politely and/or strongly disagree with them. However if you must, just go ahead and insult me further if it makes you feel good about yourself.

Bush's Priority

Bush understood his first priority was protecting the American people.

Liberals don't value life the same as normal people do so its easy for them to discount or de-value the service Bush provided the american people.

Popularity as more to do with the Liberal media reporting and less to do with job performance.

Many Liberals are unaware of all the good Bush did for the enviorment, healthcare, workplace, education, science because the liberal media never told them.

Liberals are not intellectually curious enough to find out on their own and need information spoon fed to them by the Liberal media.

Well, DDL, if you must know
and I'm guessing you might already know, when Anne, myself, or ANY other conservative posts a comment or a reply on ANY of the liberal or "moderate" dominated websites, the second an even SLIGHTLY conservative point of view is detected, that post, and the posters membership there is deleted, IMMEDIATELY!!

Liberal and "Moderate" websites, you know, those run by "open-minded" and "tolerant" people on the left, DO NOT TOLERATE ANY DISSENSION FROM THEIR LINE OF THINKING. EVER!!

Now, compare that with Townhall, where SOME libearals and outright leftist loons may not be well tolerated by some of us, they are still allowed to remain as members and post freely. You might also notice that their posts, unless REALLY offensive, are never deleted.

So your arguments against Anne are irrelevant. Especially if you already knew how liberal sites are.

no paper tiger?
how about a blind tiger who smells trouble on his right and snaps his jaws at anything passing by on his left? or a tiger so afraid of 'the other' that he will terrorize his own pack in a misguided effort to keep them all on alert?

or a cheap, poorly made stuffed tiger that has been spit up on once too often and should have been tossed in the trash long ago?

Paper Tiger Returns...
I am very afraid that the paper tiger monicker is going to be back soon. With the Democrats in Congress I think any action will be as half hearted and hollow as those under Clinton.

USMC Lt
Yeah...sigh...I agree that I have seen that happen, conservative posters getting banned on liberal-dominated website messageboards by the moderators. There is one that represents my hometown that has banned many conservative posters, but it at least happened after they were warned several times for violating the rules, (no name calling) even though it appeared that some liberals were not banned "as quickly" for doing the same thing. It is quite hypocritical of them for not being completely fair about it.

There is now mostly a bunch of syncophants posting on it, since there is no longer a fair balance created with opposing viewpoints, and it caused a steep drop in topics and replys on that messageboard as well.

Bush is no paper tiger, BUT
I can live with the country President Bush has left us. After 9/11 everyone, everyone, was waiting on a daily bases to see when and where the next attack was coming from. American's went to bed grateful that the day ended with no attacks. In fact even President Bush critics were so grateful his first four years ended with no terrorist attacks, they elected him for another four years while still attacking him. The critics hated President Bush, BUT they couldn't think of another four years without him to provide the safety they had while still attacking him. Now that President Bush is ending his Presidency, everyone has a list to show their not a cool aide drinker of President Bush. There's a couple of things those list fail to mention. Like car bombs, suicide bombers, and kidnappings in protest of the war in Iraq. That's right, thats a country the terrorist wanted to give us, not the country we have now. Who would trade the problems we have now, for the problems we would have had, if President Bush didn't take the right turn in the fork in the road. No one died for any mistakes President Bush made. During the war soldiers even died in Europe far from the war in Iraq, were their deaths mistakes of President Bush's also because they wore the uniform during his Presidency. There wasn't one time during President Bush Presidency, that we said we don't recognize this country anymore because of the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, the economy, the bailouts, or even the election of President elect Obama. The country we see now, is the one President Bush promised us and not the country the terrorist wanted to give us. President Bush kept his word. To fight war far from American soil where the people could go about their lives with business as usual, BUT he's still attacked.

DDL
Agree with your 7:15 posting.

But in another post you made a comment to the effect that "Anne and other conservatives...".

I take umbrage at that.

Please don't besmirch the reputation of traditional conservatism by associating Anne with it.

Not just the WOT
The WOT will not be the only defining element of Bush. He was aggressive in taking down much of Al Queida's infrastructure. But much of this was also due to Al Queida's actions in Spain, London etc., which caused many Europeon nations to change laws and root them out. We are left, of course, with an unfinished war in Iraq, and a situation in Afghanistan that deteriorated because we underestimated Iraq, and did not have the forces to secure Afghanistan.

Aside from this, we made little or no effort to secure our borders. The lack of attacks here indicates that Al Queida did not have the capability - because it certainly did not have to worry about access if it wanted it.

The GOP, in turn, has lost the house, senate and presidency during his tenure, in no small part because it spent and ruled much like the Democrats had done historically. And, of course, because Bush and Rumsfield - when faced with a clearly deteriorating situation in Iraq - took 3 years to react - extending the war and causing many Americans to lose confidence in their judgement.

Combined with the condition of the economy, and the fact that he's leaving office with 7 years of an average of $500 billion deficits, and the last year of a $1.2 billion deficit, I suspect that those that believe that "absence will make the heart grow fonder" are likely to be disappointed.

During his tenure, both his party and the economy was weakened, he could not resolve the conflict over the allocation of forces pertaining to trying to fight on two fronts, and the influx of illegals expanded to such a point that we now know that the US will become a nation in which minorities are in the majority.

BUSH, 9/11 & THE HUDSON RIVER MIRACLE
I find it highly significant that President Bush's splendid, moving and gracious Farewell Speech summing up his eight eventful years in office, with its focus on the war against terror and national security, was delivered just hours after the miraculous crash of Flight 1549-when an heroic commercial pilot who served in the military safely landed the damaged plane in the frigid cold of the Hudson River saving himself, his crew and a 155 passengers. I find it significant and relevant to the President and his stewardship for the following reasons:

1.One of the lucky passengers John S. Howell of Charlotte, North Carolina was brother to a firefighter who died on 9/11; and 2. the plane once evacuated drifted down river from Midtown Manhattan and came to rest by the USS Intrepid before it recommenced its journey south to Battery Park where amazingly it stopped by Ground Zero as if moved to that spot by God.

the usual short-attention span?
Ms Saunders writes:
Members of al-Qaida have told intelligence officials they never thought Washington would respond to the 9/11 attacks as ferociously as Bush responded. They expected a few bombs to be dropped, no boots on the ground, a swift withdrawal if casualties mounted -- the usual short-attention span foreign policy....
BUSH WITH FEW SUPPORTERS PUSHED ON TO VICTORY!

Where's Bin Laden?
Bush still has not produced OBL. Wasn't this the #1 World Terrorist? Didn't Bush promise to get him dead or alive, to bring him to justice or bring justice to him? If the USA is not serious about getting the world's #1 terrorist, the "War on Terror" is total bull.
Bush certainly fooled you Conservatives. You people failed to think critically and look at the difference between rhetoric and action. Bush never intended to keep his promise to the American people in the first place. That was just red meat rhetoric to keep you Conservatives voting Republican and drooling for blood vengeance that would never happen. Bush proved that Conservatives are naive and easy to manipulate.

Bush disbanded the CIA's Bin Laden Unit in 2005? Rationale? The 2004 election was over.No need to fulfill promises.

The Bush's and Bin Laden have a family relationships and friendships that go back years. Bush senior was actually at a breakfast meeting with the Bin Laden family in NY on the morning of Sept. 11th.

Bush wisked the Bin Laden family on private jet back to Saudi Arabia shortly after 9/11.The Bin Laden family acquired "special privelege" from the U.S. government. Rationale? Wealthy elites don't let other wealthy elites get harmed.

Bush did'nt even keep America safe by repeatedly ignoring warnings both from the Clinton Administration and throughout the summer of 2001 from his own Intelligence Community. Richard Clarke even told him "Bin Laden determined to attack inside the USA".

Why Republicans lost
The Republican Party lost the Senate, The House and now the Presidency because Americans are finally waking up and realizing the nation is about to go under. Can you blame them?

Conservatives can't govern. They are incompetent as government officials and do not keep promises. They cannot even win a war against rag tag countries. They cannot even route out Bin Laden. They cannot even protect our border from the Mexican Invasion. They don't even protect the environment choosing to import MORE foreign oil and take the tops off of mountains to get more cheap dirty coal. They don't honor theur word and actively violate our International Geneva Conventions, the 1994 War Crimes Act (passed by Republican Congress) and use torture and suspension of habeas corpus to trample on human rights. They actively violate our own Constitution and use wire tapping to intrude on the private lives of innocent Americans.....then they lie about doing it.

Why should anyone believe Conservatives in the future or elect them to office? For 6 of the last 8 years Conservatives held both houses of Congress yet failed to abide by the rule of law or reign in the rogue President. Since they did not honor our country or their oath of office then, why should anyone expect them to be different in the future?

As For Me
As for me and my family: WE are better off after 8 years of Bush than we would have been after 8 years of anybody else available.

That is how I see things. And how I see things determines my actions. Those that see things differently are rather irrelevant.

George Dubya leaves last day in office falls on the birthday of Robert E. Lee. There are parallels between both of these Christian gentlemen.

Educated people.

Educated people know there is a difference between Conservatives and Republicans.

Most Conservatives happen to be registered Republicans. But not all Repbulicans happen to be conservatives. Arlen Specter, Olympia Snow as examples.

This is also true among Democrats and Liberals.

If you ask a rank and file hard working, tax paying Democrat about Liberal issues you find they oppose just about all of them.

They oppose higher taxes.
They oppose tax breaks for businesses who don't pay taxes in the first place.
They oppose higher spending.
They oppose Earmark spending.
They oppose more government regulations.
They oppose weakening our military.
They oppose a corrupt United Nations.
They oppose letting Europe dictate U.S. Foreign Policy.
They oppose Affirmative Action Quotas.
They oppose "special rights" for minority groups.
They oppose Liberal Judges making law and not following the law.
They oppose Liberal Judges letting violent criminal out of prison.
They oppose illegal immigration.
Abortion and Gun Laws cuts about 50/50 depending upon how you phrase the question.

So clearly Rank and File Democrats agree with Conservatives on many many issues. They just don't agree one which political party can best address those issues.

Sorry, "First,"
I agree with you that Conservatives can't govern. But we disagree on the reasons. The only Conservative who ever governed in the United States was Ronald Reagan, and for a short period he did well. But since then conservatives have been relegated to weak sister status even in their own party.

When the Republicans, over the objections of Conservatives, nominated GWB, it became clear that Conservatives would not be governing anything, just as it was in the first Bush administration.

In short, Conservatives can't govern because the vast majority want life handed to them on a silver platter and don't want to work for it. That includes most Republicans as well.

So Conservatives are at the mercy of the majority. Which is why the Republican Congress spent so Liberally. It was full of Liberals.

The only way Conservatives will ever be able to govern is after the ruling Libs of both parties run this country into the ground the way they have been doing the past 20 years. Give us a couple more trillion-dollar bailouts and the resulting crash of the currency. Social Security will fail within ten years, probably during the Obama presidency.

Until catastrophe happens, nobody listens to conservatives. We're a gloomy lot.

A Tiger in Need of Rehab

DEBRA J. SAUNDERS writes: "Osama bin Laden once told Time magazine that the U.S. withdrawal from Somalia after the murder of 18 U.S. troops on a humanitarian mission made him realize "more than before that the American soldier was a paper tiger and after a few blows ran in defeat."

As bin Laden sits in his cave gleefully assessing the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, what does he and his fellow terrorists think of a country which on its soil suffered 3,000 -- THREE THOUSAND -- fatalities at the hands of bin Laden's terrorists and then proceeded to go to war against a country which Pres. Bush has conceded was not directly responsible for 9/11?

Universally, Osama bin Laden is believed to have been the force behind the catastrophic attacks, yet today, some SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS AFTER 9/11, bin Laden is silll free, still recruiting terrorists and STILL threatening to annihilate the United States!

What fear of the U.S. do mass murderer bin Laden and his fellow terrorists have when after the horrific attacks of 9/11, Pres. Geoge W. Bush, the leader of the most powerful nation on earth, repeatedly vows to "get" bin Laden "dead or alive" and then incredibly states six months later that bin Laden is of "no concern"!

What must our enemies think when George W. Bush, Commander in Chief of the world's most prolific military, tells the world that the United States must go to war with Iraq in order to protect U.S. security and survival and vows to "plan carefully" and exercise the "full might" of our military in Iraq. And then, after four years of deadly fighting, is obliged to employ a "surge" in order to avoid the consequences of humiliating defeat.

For all his blustering and bravado, truth is George W. Bush, guided by a defective compass, has converted the United States into an erzatz tiger unsure of which is its head and tail. And badly in need of rehab.

Einstein's definition of insanity
is doing the same thing and expecting different results each time. Hamas fires rockets and gets hammered. They whine for world opinion and get Israel to back down. They fire rockets and get hammered again. So forth and so on. Hmmm. Is there a classification for collective insanity (other than liberalism)?

Soli Deo Gloria!!

Thank you Mr President!
Funny thing it are so many Liberals that criticize Bush and his Iraq War policies, yet none that I know of, ever spent a day in the Military helping defend this Country. That goes for a lot of Republicans and Conservatives. Many take a stand in supporting Bush, but do so from a safe and lofty position such as their Arm Chairs. For Liberals and Conservatives alike, who seem to have all the answers when it comes what is best for the security of this nation need to put their money where their mouths are and head on down to their local recruiters and sign up. There are very few restrictions including age preventing a person from getting in, so come on folks, those of you meeting all necessary requirements, those of you who have all the answers, sign on the dotted line, and show us all, just how patriotic, brave you really are. For the Liberals, your Boy Obama never spent a day in the Military, so where do you get off criticizing G.W Bush?

To you President Bush, while you may not be perfect (there are few of us Humans that are), thank you for protecting our country.

Farewell
It's all over for Pres. Bush, at least according to Howard Cosell... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7B4a3G5oQbg

Conservatives can't govern... ?
Liberals seek to be governed and say conservatives can’t govern. OK. Lennin, Stalin, Mao, Hitler, and Hussein were among many despots down through history who showed they could govern.

If you are a liberal who needs the authoritarian environment of being governed maybe you should have stayed with your mommy and daddy.

As a conservative I neither want nor expect to be governed. I want elected officials who represent the people, are responsible to the people and courageously act in the best interest of the people whether the people understand they are doing so or not.

I have never seen such outright rude treatment and abject hatred of any president as I have seen displayed toward George Bush. If you were part of it you should be ashamed of yourself. George Bush has been a champion of the United States. When Obama screws up, and he will, I hope we can give him more gracious treatment.

It is one thing to disagree with Bush. But in matters of national security and military action you and I are not privy to the information on which he was obligated to act.

Bush got set up for economic disaster by Carter's Community Reinvestment Act and by the corporate cheating that got underway during Clinton's administration.

Clinton should have had the courage to respond to the dozen or more terrorist attacks on his watch instead of letting the terrorists think that the US was weak. Clinton should have been strengthening, not weakening, our intelligence. Emboldened by Clinton's timidity the terrorists brought us 9/11.

Bush has not been perfect. He was left an imperfect situation in the violent and chancy world of today.

The United States is safer because of him. Your tender liberal behind, that so much seeks to be governed, is alive. It's time for gracious and patriotic Americans to simply say: "Thank you George Bush for a good job under tough conditions."

Chuckles

Maverick
I agree with you ! Well said !

even more a paper tiger
noone has failed to notice the instant uprising against the war by the treasonous left. twice mobilized, the traitors will be even faster to unite forces to prevent the successful conclusion of any future war. noone with enough brains to become president will be unaware of that. there is no conflict that we can possibly become involved in will be spared the treasonous opposition of the left. any president that wants to win a war had better be willing to round up and execute at least a thousand traitors before he gets into a war. in obamas case, that would mean executing all his friends and supporters. i am not going to say that he wouldnt do that, but if he doesnt, he better not get into a war, even if it is helping hamas defeat the israelis, which his friends would initially support, but would soon oppose.

Paper Tiger
OBL didn't realize that this Paper Tiger deals out fatal paper cuts.

Bomb with impunity?
This needs some serious editing!

"Quivering in a cave?" This is delusional.

But, overall, you are right on target: We've shown, under Bush, that we are not to be messed with.

Now, of course, THEY may be the ones who are delusional, thinking Barack is no true American. They will be dead wrong. Just let them try something as big as 9/11.

President Bush's Only Mistake
Was to not articulate to the American public there was a relationship between Al-Qaida and Irak and he left the media do the biding for him. Buried in the liberal archives were the bombings in Spain that killed 200 people. Guess who claimed the attack? Al-Qaida. Al-Qaida punished 200 Spanish citizens for their government's involvement in Irak. Pres. Bush should have learned from Reagan and go out there and explain to the folks, that everything we did in Guantanamo was legal, especially when the CIA thugs released classified information to the NY Times to discredit him. To this day it baffles me Pres. Bush never fought back. Those in Congress who want to prosecute him, sat there and were briefed on all potential methods of interrogation and gave their blessings. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Jay Rockefeller, Jane Harmon etc. Are these people going to take the stand and admit their involvement? Can they explain why they signed the Patriot Act, FISA? The fact is they have NOTHING; there's more probable cause in the Marc Rich pardons, the Puerto Rican terrorists pardons and I don't see anybody asking for the AG nominee's head. As a Republican I too want unity and want our country and our new President to succeed but he will be held accountable if he takes our country in the wrong path. Perhaps we as Republicans can teach a lesson in civility to low life liberals and be nice when we criticize our new President. Godspeed!!!

Pres. Bush has my deepest thanks
for keeping me, my children and grandchildren, safe thru 8 years of the most bitter and most undeserved criticism. BHO promised change (from WHAT?). Those who fell for this ploy now see that we're getting the Clintonistas, and worse, back in power. Obama and friends -- to whom he owes over $500 million of donations -- have promised to march the USA down the road of socialism (read "increased gov. interference and redistribution of wealth"). BHO is the enemy of unborn children and the Constitution. I have no confidence, no optimism, that BHO knows how to lead America. I fear for my country. Sit tight --- and PRAY.
