What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

For lo these many years, the Democratic motorcade class has scolded American workers for driving gas-guzzling cars. Now that Americans have begun driving more fuel-efficient cars and driving less, how have the finger-waggers reacted? No, they are not planning a parade -- they already are working on a new tax on miles driven to make up for lost gasoline-tax revenue.

With the help of a six-year, $2.1 million federal grant, Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski is moving forward with a proposal to tax Oregon drivers for the miles they drive. "As Oregonians drive less and demand more fuel-efficient vehicles, it is increasingly important that the state find a new way, other than the gas tax, to finance our transportation system," Kulongoski told the Albany Democrat Herald.

Why not simply raise the gas tax so that Hummer owners continue to pay more than drivers of four-cylinder put-puts?

"It's very difficult to raise the gas tax when the price of gasoline is so volatile," answered James Whitty, Kulongoski's point man on the Oregon Mileage Fee Concept. (In lieu of the term "concept," many Oregonians might prefer to substitute the word "squeeze.") Politically, Whitty explained, raising taxes has been untenable in Oregon and on Capitol Hill since 1993.

In November 2007, a task force released the findings of the Road User Fee Pilot Program. Guess what: It found that a road tax has more advantages than disadvantages. In that self-congratulatory tone perfected by bureaucrats who have succeeded in finding what they always planned on finding, Whitty noted in the report, "The Oregon Department of Transportation concludes that the Oregon Road User Fee Pilot Program tested the critical elements of the Oregon Mileage Concept and yielded the result -- Concept Proven."

Not so fast, buckaroo. Continued...

Bush really wasn't the one who set up monitoring phone calls. That was done by Clinton with his "Privacy Improvement Act". Every new telephone, fax, or computer has a chip installed that records all outgoing messages and transmits them to Washington to be searched by computer for certain code words such as "bomb" and "terrorist".

Who the heck cares? Are your conversations so important that anyone would care to listen? And if they did, what can they do about your calls? Actually, if you listen to yourself on your next call, it would probably bore even you. They are even more boring than someone else's home movies or vacation pictures.

The only ones who really care are those who are trying to put something over on the country. Those are basically our enemies anyway. Care to guess who Bush and company want to listen to? It certainly isn't the honest citizens of this country. They want to listen to those aiding the terrorists with money, equipment, and information. Personally, I hope they catch them.

Incidently, Clinton's Goals 2000 educational program also included NOT teaching 90% of Americans how to read and write, a skill once considered the most important in education. The reason? It is much harder to catch writen messages than it is vocal ones.

The Real Reason
Gasoline has to be acquired at the pump so it is easy to tax. Deisel, ditto. But electricity? It would be easy to install a plug at home. How would the government tax that without taxing the power you use to heat and cool your home? And if they tried to tax that, then there is a good chance they would get the revolution they don't want.

Alternate fuels are the same way. Propane is hard to tax for roads now. Natural gas is as bad as electricity.

But a milage tax? Now that covers any fuel! It doesn't matter what is available now or might be available in the future. You tax everyone!

The trouble is that most of these people wanting to tax milage live in inner cities like Washington and New York or they drive only minimal distances, like Congressmen who have government limos to ride in. They don't travel great distances so wouldn't pay much tax. But take a look at most Western and Midwestern states. Many here drive as much as a hundred miles to work each day - each way. We get the cars with the cheapest milage because we simply can't afford the taxes if we want to work. A milage tax would mean it wouldn't matter what type of car we drove - we'd pay the full amount.

Congress (and state legislatures) don't worry about why people drive. They simply want a large amount of tax money to spend. And this milage tax will give them that, particularly when they know that they can't continue to force Americans to drive with gasoline that they can easily tax.

Why do you think that we don't already have cars that can get over a hundred miles per gallon? And don't say it can't be done! I'm a mechanical enginer who deals with equipment every day. A 1967 Trihumph could get 75 mpg. It is not only possible, it can be done almost immediately. But think of the loss in taxes our poor government officals would see! They might even have to cut back on their spending!

Naw, they would never do that.
