Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

DENVER -- The goodie bag given to attendees of the Democratic National Convention includes maps, magnets and Dale Carnegie's Golden Book. The first principle for Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is: "Don't criticize, condemn or complain." No. 2: "Give honest, sincere appreciation."

Clearly Carnegie didn't write an opinion page column, but in that I think my original take on Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's choice of running mate was a tad harsh, I would like to address what was positive about his choice of Joe Biden.

My first take? I felt the same as when I watched the end of the last episode of "The Sopranos." Let down. The go-to-black ending may have been nuanced, but as far as I was concerned, the producers punted. They chose a non-ending because they couldn't decide on a strong ending.

Yes, Biden is considered a statesman with strong foreign-policy credentials. He also comes across as a very decent man. He has been an effective senator, who could work with Democrats and Republicans alike.

Politically, however, not choosing Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate seemed a gratuitous way of insulting Clinton's close-to 18 million voters. Worse, it must have felt like rubbing salt into the wound to Clinton and her supporters when Obama passed her over for a man who, months ago, was shooting for a third- or fourth-place finish in Iowa -- then dropped out after he came in fifth, having failed to garner 1 percent of the vote.

There are more than 1,500 delegates pledged to Clinton in this town -- and you know what they say about women scorned. So, if you have to pick the Iowa horse who couldn't win, place or show -- well, first, hide the ashtrays.

Now for the honest, sincere appreciation part: It was gutsy for Obama not to pick La Hil. Maybe he didn't pick her because he doesn't like her. Or maybe he didn't pick her because his pollsters think that Clinton would cost him votes. Whatever the reason, if Obama loses, he will spend the rest of his life hearing that this is where he screwed up.

And it won't matter that Clinton ran a disorganized campaign, burned through $106 million before the first vote was cast and frittered away a solid lead. Clintonia will whisper that if the Dems lose the White House, then it will be because Obama didn't pick Clinton.

The upside of this gamble? If Obama wins, then he'll own the operation. He'll start with a clean slate.

One big problem with Biden: Like Hillary Clinton, Biden voted to authorize the use of U.S. military force in Iraq. Some liberals forgive Biden for his Iraq vote, noting that he has been highly critical of the Bush administration's handling of the war -- albeit with his quirky proposal to divide Iraq, Gaul-like, into three parts.

And like Obama, Biden said the surge could not work. Well, it has worked.

I think Clinton lost because she voted for the war. I think that Democratic primary voters chose not to forgive in 2008 a vote they forgave in 2004 when they nominated John Kerry. I remember looking out at delegates at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston -- 86 percent of who, unlike me, opposed the war -- and thinking that if they wanted the party to be truly united, they should have nominated a candidate who did not support the war. As I wrote at the time, "They should have picked (Howard) Dean."

In 2004, Democrats thought they were being clever in nominating Kerry, whose vote rankled so many delegates. In 2008, they picked a clever candidate who opposed the war from the start.

Look beyond the convention. Even those voters who have strong misgiving about the war in Iraq nonetheless may not want a vice president who voted for a war, then walked away from that vote when it became politically unpopular.

Biden says that his old friend, John McCain, has changed his positions to win the GOP nomination. "I've been disappointed in my friend, John McCain, who gave in to the right wing of his party and yielded to the very 'Swift Boat' politics that he once so deplored. Folks -- campaigns for presidents are a test of character and leadership," Biden said.

Leadership? When the polls showed his support of the Iraq War could kill his chances in 2008, McCain stood firm. He even called for more troops in Iraq.

Robert, Mrs Obama had no message....
because she was trying to accomplish the impossible - make americans believe she loves this country. It's hard to fake it when for 2 years straight, she has consistently stated that this country is devastatingly weak. Only Obama has the charisma to say 'I love Wright like an uncle, and I don't know Wright' in less than two weeks and still keep some people interested in his candidacy. Unfortunately, his wife's anger is not hidden so well and it comes through even when she gives her half smile.....and chokes on 'pride of country' message.......her outfit was nice though and reminded me of cindy's wardrobe.

THE OBAMA MAMA SPEECH
Anyone can say they are normal everyday people and they love their country and have their kids by their side to prove they love their family . Mama and brother telling of the dead father/husband and the sister/daughter and how much they have loved her and she them. No one doubts her love of family , she sees a country of Barack's and her making that she loves and no I don't think it's the same country we love , and those who vote for him will be getting just what they think they wanted.... SURPRISE

She's not done yet !
A Clintonista from Philly has filed a lawsuit in Fed. Court questioning & requiring the FEC to look into charges that the Messiah was NOT U.S. born.
Heh,heh,heh...what was that about a woman scorned? She's not done w/ Obambi yet!

Michelle: Family Values?
But not where it concerns her in-laws, does it?
I mean, I didn't like my in-laws either, but hers are all the way in Kenya, which is a bonus for those who never wish to see their in-laws.

Sending a card with some cash once in awhile to them shouldn't be above the family values of the Obama's. Apparently it is. In fact, it's more to the Obama's liking that WE pay for their distant family and others like them around the world.

What is very telling and the juiciest of the DNC that is not being televised, are the side speeches from representatives of the core radical leftist groups who are not being headlined.

There is such racism such hatred against white people, which only goes to show, this circus is all about race. One woman said that we should learn to be more like Australia because they apologized to the aborigenies (sp.) And so with Barak in office, white Americans can now apologize to the indians and the blacks and the hispanics for everything that ever happened over 300 years ago.

Sorry, as a white person living in the year 2008, I have nothing to apologize for, nor do anyone who isn't white deserve and apology from me.

If McCain's campaign wanted to scare and upset the living crap out of Americans, they should be broadcasting these core radicals speaking there and ignore the rest.

Obama's Anti-War BS
God how the media loves to report that Obama opposed the war in Iraq from Day One. Even the allegedly conservative writers like Saunders here spout this crap as if it means something.

Wake up people. When that choice was made, Barack Obama was an Illinois State Senator. He had no voice or say in the question. His opposition was meaningless.

You know, there were some kindergartners who also opposed going to war in Iraq in 2003. Why aren't they on the Democratic ticket? Their opposition meant just as much as Obamas. Nothing.

@JustPaul
The kindergarteners you mention (now grade-schoolers) probably aren't on the ticket because they don't, as yet, meet the minimum age requirement for president. Otherwise, from what I've seen, they'd probably be getting nominated - that kind of logic level is about par for the course from most of those liberals I've had the dubious distinction of facing. (Most, not all. I've run into a few who have gained my respect, even though I disapprove of their stances on the issues.)

We Live in Interesting Times
I like that allusion to the old saying: "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." I think it is almost unanimous among TH bloggers, and many others, that if Hill got the Veep spot Obama's election would be a cinch.

How many observers were saying at the beginning of this year, "If Hillary gets the nomination she'll win the White House"?

But there's another old saying that conservatives should pay heed to: "Be careful what you wish for..."

Obama the Kenyan, Obama the Indonesian
Obama is not a citizen of the United States of America. We cannot stand on this fundamental denial of the authority of the Constitution of the United States of America. Where is the mainstream media?

the end of the missus clinton
the missus clinton has only one choice. She either fights to win or is tossed on the assheap of history.

If the meesiah, and that is my new spelling for the self absorbed loser from the chicago corrupt political machine, wins there is no future for the missus clinton to gain the presidency.

If mccain picks a woman and then pledges only one term with his successor being a woman, the missus clinton again loses.

This is her last chance to win. Besides it gives her another problem what to do with all the undies she had embroidered with commnder in chief and the day of the week on them

Obiden & Obama
Two phonies. Two who want it so badly they will allow themselves to be used by the very people whose main goal in life is the destruction of this country as we know it.

The DNC and their benefactors did not want the Clintons because the Clintons have their own agenda and would not allow themselves to be used if it would not benefit them.

Whatever any politician tells you,you can't take it at face value. They all have their own agenda and it usually is not for our benefit, but for theirs.

Political Folly?
"Politically, however, not choosing Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate seemed a gratuitous way of insulting Clinton's close-to 18 million voters. Worse, it must have felt like rubbing salt into the wound to Clinton and her supporters when Obama passed her over for a man who, months ago, was shooting for a third- or fourth-place finish in Iowa -- then dropped out after he came in fifth, having failed to garner 1 percent of the vote."

When was the last time any presidential candidate picked the runner up in their party as their Vice President? It doesn't appear to have hurt anyone yet.

Biden a decent man????
decent; 1. decorous 2. modest 3.respectable
4. passable 5. sympathetcally fair
Okay Debra..which definition fits bin Biden?

1. decourous i.e propriety..getting kids
jobs with lobbyists? Seems to be a bit
of nepotism there, especially when kids
are newly minted grads..no starting at the
bottom for those scions of the house of bin Biden.

2. Modest..oh yeah, Joe is surely THE most
modest of the kinglets in the Senate. (about to give in to a bout of hysterical laughter.)

3. respectable..any respectable person would not be caught dead with a nominee that's
on record for supporting the torture, abuse
and execution of preborn babies..some just three inches from their first breaths, and some born but left to gasp their lives out ..alone.

4. passable..this could fit..2. not very good but neeting minimum standards

5. sympathetically fair ...compassionate (see meaning #3),2. congenial 2. pleasant and synpathetic..ask Judge Bork and Justice Thomas.
Fair..6. just; equitable honest; impartial (again see Judge Bork and Justice Thomas), 2. openly honest..he's a bloomin' DemonRAt!!!,
above mediocraty..sorry he's so mediocre, he's a joke.

re: Camintx
Actually, yes there is that was Reagan he gave the VP slot to the guy that came in second in the Primaries George HW Bush. Actually, it's not unusual for Democrats and Republicans to choose the runner up. It's pretty common in very divisive campaigns. It's a healing gesture.

So Sad
At a time of peril and economic challenges, these are the best a nation of 300 million citizens can field to go up against the mullahs, the czars and the Red Chinese?

Jesus God, is no one paying attention? Are we just too fat, stupid and lazy to find someone of merit? Are so many of us dependent on the government?

This is what we're going to do with the legacy of all the guys that died face down in the mud of foreign lands to protect our sorry lard assses?

Hillary, Biden, Obama. Not an accomplishment among them. At least McCain served his country. But the other three have never made an honest dime in their lives. They've never made, produced, sold, manufactured, created or built anything of any value. They've spent all their lives as hemorroids along for a free ride.
