Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In July, federal authorities indicted Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, on corruption charges on the grounds that Alaska's Prince of Earmarks concealed hundreds of thousands of dollars of gifts and improvements to his Alaska home provided by a powerful oil services company. Also this summer, amid the mortgage meltdown, newspapers reported that a number of senators -- including Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.; Kent Conrad, D-N.D.; and Barack Obama, D.-Ill. -- were the beneficiaries of sweetheart home loans.

In June, the Senate Ethics Committee began an initial look into Dodd's and Conrad's discounted Countrywide Financial VIP loans, as is fitting. Meanwhile, with all of the ethics stink bombs lurking in Washington, the committee, chaired by California Democrat Barbara Boxer, is aiming its guns at Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., for "a serious violation of Senate rules."

Coburn's bad? An obstetrician by profession, Coburn won't heed the committee's threat to reprimand him for delivering babies back home in Oklahoma -- for free.

"On my own time, I'm taking care of women who have a need, and I'm going to continue to deliver babies," Coburn told Politico.com.

And, bully for him: "I'm not going to stop." When a member of the House, Coburn delivered 400 babies under an agreement with ethics meisters that allowed him to do so -- if he charged only enough to cover his expenses.

When elected to the Senate, which was first run by Republicans and now Democrats, Ethics Committee members told Coburn that if he wants to treat patients -- largely poor and "at risk" mothers -- he could not charge them, and thus would have to eat the costs of his practice.

The Senate Ethics Committee allows big-buck book deals for U.S. senators, but in a May memorandum, it told Coburn, "you are allowed to practice medicine if you provide such services for free." So he started working for nothing.

Even free wasn't good enough. After the Muskogee Regional Medical Center, where he practices, was taken over by a for-profit operation, the committee told Coburn to cease "providing any and all medical services" by June 22, pursuant to Senate Rule 37 on conflicts of interest. Coburn could practice medicine only as a solo practitioner, for a private entity that provides services for free, or for a government or tribal health facility.

What's really going on here? The senator -- who prefers to be called Dr. Coburn -- has been a thorn in the side of both big-spending Republicans and Democrats. He calls earmarks "the gateway drug" to Washington's spending addiction. The Washington Post's Dana Milbank wrote back in 2006 when the GOP ran the Senate, "Tom Coburn is like an imam at a pig roast: He sees pork everywhere, and he doesn't like it."

Coburn bucked party leaders as he tried to block Stevens' $229 million earmark, largely for a bridge between Anchorage and an island with 50 residents, infamously dubbed the "Bridge to Nowhere."

When Democrats took over the Senate, Coburn challenged their pork-barrel projects as well. In July, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid bundled 35 spending bills into a $10 billion omnibus package, Coburn successfully led the charge to block the measure -- citing next year's projected $482 billion deficit. As Coburn likes to say, the American people elect senators to "make hard choices and live within our means."

After I called Sen. Boxer's office, a committee spokesperson sent me a note that said, "The work of the Ethics Committee is confidential and we cannot comment on matters that may be before it." In July, Boxer told the Washington Post, "He knows what he's supposed to be doing."

The savvy observer has to conclude that because Coburn has challenged Senate pork, the Ethics Committee essentially is willing to stick it to poor pregnant women, who might benefit from a free delivery.

It's a tactical blunder. If the committee continues to push for a public reprimand, Coburn has the right to ask for a full Senate vote. While Boxer may not mind coming across as petty and vindictive, other senators might hesitate before publicly bullying a man for delivering babies for free.

As Coburn spokesman John Hart noted, there have been many stories about lawmakers, their friends and families profiting from earmarks, but "no one has ever chosen to have Dr. Coburn deliver her baby in order to sway his vote." With Democrats in charge, the Senate Select Committee on Ethics is no more ethical than it was under the GOP. In going after Coburn, its mandate is clear: Forget Ethics, It's Payback Time.

Dr Coburn
Makes me proud to be an Okie! I just wish he could be McCain's VP.

With Coburn's dislike for pork...
he sounds like he should be on the short list for McCain's VP, Stacey. Lucky you to have a senator who understands why he is in DC.

Boxer vs. Coburn...
....Coburn: All human life is precious...

....Boxer: Just kill those poor womens babies, they dont need to be born, they will be a drag on socity, blahblahblah more abortionist tripe here...blahblahblah

Wow
This is astonishing. I wonder why you hear NOTHING about this from the media?

Dr. Coburn
Aaaaaarghhhh.
I'm so sick of politicians, and this takes the cake.
God bless you, Dr. Coburn.

Ethics
Will we ever get politicians that try to what is right rather than spend all of their efforts on following party lines and getting re-elected? We need to send most of them home in November (Dr, Coburn excepted). The idea of the ten percent politician (amount of graft) sounds like a good deal!

Vitaglubet

Procreation bias
"The savvy observer has to conclude that because Coburn has challenged Senate pork, the Ethics Committee essentially is willing to stick it to poor pregnant women, who might benefit from a free delivery."

It seems the dhimmis aren't as supportive of women as they claim to be - at least those that have kids.

'Sleep around' Edwards nearly shut down the obstetrician business in North Carolina with his peculiar medical theories and suits that raised malpractice coverage premiums to prohibitive heights.

Now we have a gallant and principled obstetrician who happens to be a senator, who self insures all these malpractice risks let alone the medical service fees to pursue his noble and humanitarian profession, and he's castigated by his corrupt collegues for opposing their earmark pig fest.

It makes me wonder if the 'ethical' dhimmis would have no problem with his activities if he were aborting the babies instead of delivering them.

Carpetbagger Boxer's not corrupt? Apart from all her other enterprises she carefully nurtures by means of her senate position, while she opposes expanding our domestic supplies of oil, she is heavily invested in said oil industry. Keeping the price of gas up makes her wealthier. From her point of view, vilifying the oil companies simply makes good business sense. Don't look for her to support domestic drilling.

And this creepy pig-b2tch opposes Dr. Coburn from delivering babies as a senate ethics violation.

If he was providing
free abortions on his own time, these miserables would love the man.

Run them all out in Nov. and make Dr Coburn speaker in the new congress.

Here's hoping...
dummie Boxer continues pursuing the ethics fiasco against the good Dr.
I cannot think of a more deserving idiot for full public humiliation than this Bee itch.

Stacey
I'll trade you a Durbin and Obama for one Dr. Coburn.

Sheesh, Boxer out Pelosis Pelosi. What are they doing in the granola state that that is what they elect. They act like this is JR HI and they're running the student year book.

I've heard Dr. Coburn interviewed. He is a man of principles, something the dumbocrats can't fathom.

Seawolf
You stole my thunder ! I thought when I was reading the article that he would be a hero if he was doing free abortions.

This is just par for the course for the Democrats. They are trying to destroy any semblance of decency in congress. The decent ones tend to make the others look even worse.

The Democrats smell blood and are going for the kill. If Obama is elected,it will be a massacre.

Its pretty much agreed as fact
by all members of Congress that Barbara Boxer is their dumbest member. and thats against some real stiff competition

There is only one appropriate response
that DOCTOR Coburn should give to babs:

"See ya on the floor, Byatch!"

oddly misleading column.
It does seem silly that Coburn can't do pro bono medical work. But Saunders is rather misleading in pretending this began with Boxer, when this is a dispute that predates the democrats taking over, and the ethics committee is one of the few that is split between dems and republicans. Democrats cannot make such decisions without republican supports.

She is also rather dishonest in lumping Obama's buying a house in with the Senators who got deals from Countrywide. She apparently was hoping people wouldn't notice when his name suddenly disappeared from those who were being investigated. Or possibly she wanted people to see some ominous conspiracy in it when in fact he simply wasn't related to the Countrywide issue at all.

The Post did run a story on this dispute, so when one says the media ignores it, that does not actually include the mainstream media.

Tom Coburn: Noble and Humble

The hypocrisy of the Democrats never ceases to amaze. They (Democrats in the Senate) should be tarred and feathered on the steps of the Capitol Building and run out of town.

Stacey
Kudos!! You guys should continue electing Dr. Coburn...every life is precious. In these times of disheartening medical procedures, when the democratic president is spouting partial birth abortions, that there is a knight defending the rights of less affluents, to have a first rate doctor caring for them for free it's heartwarming. You guys know how to choose a deserving soul to represent "you the people"
Amazing!

Exposing the blindness of Democrats
Of course, the MSM has not reported this! They can't stand to reveal anything that puts the liberal Democrats in a bad light. Yes, if Dr. Coburn were an abortionist, he would be getting the spotlight. Information such as this should be flooding the internet so that thinking people will know the truth about Boxer and her fellow villains.

Ethics
As long as we continue the policy of seating the Ethics Committee with the same people it is suppose to govern, the results will be the same sorry mess we have now regardless of party. Given the power a Senator has and then allowing them to 'govern themselves' is beyond stupid. Lon, I think you are correct in your blurb on Obama. I believe he got his house through a crooked associate or something along those lines. You know, Mr. World Citizen, above reproach and all.

NOT Coburn for McCain's VP
PLEASE NO!!!!

If Dr. Coburn were on McCain's ticket (and they win the White House) he'd be OUT of the Senate!! The VP is only called on to vote in the Senate as a tie-breaker. The VP has no veto power.

As a VP Dr. Coburn would be relegated to Senatorial irrelevance!!! Where would we be with all that pork freely flowing again?

Let Boxer and the rest of the Dumb-o-crats perform their political ballet (with their steel-toed ballet jack-boots). Dr. Coburn can't lose this issue as long as it goes public - which it currently is!

All you Oklahomans out there: keep this man of integrity as long as he's willing to stay!

I grew up in Cali but live in Oklahoma.
The transition was tough to take when I was 20 years old and in college, but now that I'm an adult and my main concern in life is no longer wondering where the next party is, I am quite happy with where I am.

I tend to hate 95% of politicians but of the few I do like, and like a lot, Coburn and Inhoffe are right at the top. Thank God I'm no longer in the land of Pelosi and Boxer.

Dim-o-crats
Or is it Dum-o-crats. The demonrats according to the Internal Revenue have the largest number of millionaires of any group in America which is not hard to understand when their theivery is reported, which never is by the streamlie media. Carter C. Hart

To make the U.S. better
I wish we could trade McCain for Him. Carter C. Hart

Doctors in Congress
The lawyers in Congress don't like the doctors there. I've heard that there is a bill there to ban doctors from running for any office on the grounds that by their profession they are required to "serve" and that means they must remain out of politics.

The reasons for this? The doctors won't toe the lawyers' line of government and they are almost the only profession that gives them enough income to compete in elections with lawyers.

California's Senators' Real Names

Let's get it straight. California's senators' real names are Senator BOXHEAD and Senator FINESWINE. That explains a lot, doesn't it?

E-mail Boxer!
This is a prime example of those who will call evil good and good evil.

Here's a recommendation - don't just whine on townhall about Boxer. Send her a message like I did. Her website for e-mails is:

http://boxer.senate.gov/contact/email/policy.cfm

It feels good now that I've been able to share my frustrations with her about her inablility to act like an adult.

Boxer and Pilosi TOO
Enough to give California a bad name.
The dumbest senator AND congressperson!
Who votes for these fools?
BTW, the Bridge to Nowhere was to be in Ketchikan, not Ancorage.

Oddly Misleading Column???
Lon,

Who cares when the debate of Coburn's pro-bono medical work began? The point of Saunder's article is to point out that the debate is ongoing from an ethics committee being chaired by Boxer. If I were the chairman, I wouldn't allow this nonsense 2 seconds on my committee floor. I'd dismiss it after the first mention from either side of the aisle and move on to more important topics. Committee chairs have a tremendous amount of power when it comes to what they will and will not allow on their committee agendas. Stop trying to be a Boxer apologist. It makes you look almost as bad as her.

Unbelievable!
Stevens should resign immediately!!!!

It is obvious that the guy took 100s of thousands of dollars in bribes when he had free work done on his home. The man is a senile old idiot who in earlier times would be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail. Probably a death sentence for a geezer like him!

All the ethics committee of the US senate can find to inquire about is a medical doc doing free baby deliveries?

BTW: Has there been an inquiry into BO's pork earmark of $1,000,000 in 2007 for the University of Chicago Medical Center? Mrs BO received a $200,000 a year pay raise from Chicago MC when BO became a US Senator. The pay for sleeping with a US Senator is evidently about $300,000 a year according to Chicago Med Ctr as long as hubby earmarks $1,000,000 to the center. Are you a professional when you are paid to sleep with someone?

No conflict of interest there. Even BO himself saw that it might appear bad when he said the pork was "probably something that we should have passed on to Durbin." Whaaaaaat? BO thinks that by having his buddy Sen Durbin do the deed it is any less corrupt.

Sorry Young Lonigan
It appears I've used your idea of Tar & Feather without quotes. Sorry!

Eagle154
So you are as upset with the Republican Chairman who started this issue, or you are playing partisan politics while pretending to make a stand on principle?

Apparently Coburn is violating Senate rules, but doing so in a way that probably should not be a violation of senate rules. Probably a case in which discretion is appropriate. But then Coburn is a grandstander which can make discretion more difficult.

But making this an issue of Coburn vs Boxer is to misrepresent the issue. And the ethics committee is one in which the chair has less power because the ethics committee does not pass laws, it makes pronouncements on other members, and so it has been set up to make domination by one party much more difficult.

So I agree that Coburn should be able to practice medicine pro bono. But I disagree that the issue should be used to dishonestly single out Boxer in the matter. That relies on a misunderstanding of how the ethics committee works.

So the answer to your question is that people who think that debate should be honest care whether an issue is being presented honestly. If you are not one of them, that is your business.

rules are rules
the issue is seeing patients at a for-profit hospital. It is just coincidental he delivers babies. If the senator was selling stocks for a stock brokerage and receiving money for it the ethics committee would be looking into that. If they don't have rules then Mr Stevens would be remodeling his house with supporters money with no rules to go after him. If Coburn is now delivering babies for free and not doing it at a for profit hospital then the issue is finished. He is following rules. let him deliver all the full term babies he wants. That seems to have nothing to do with the abortion issue.

Oxymoron..Dem Ethics Committee

There is only a handful of US Senators who are deserving of America's respect, on their on merits, and Tom Coburn is one of them. According to the Dem's "ethics", Like Sen Corburn..former Senator Frist, who frequently went to foreign countries to perform free heart surgeries, would have also been in "violation"...

When Dingbat Boxer isn't erroneously grandstanding for the (increasing) polar bears, in order to get ANWR drilling banned forever; She is busy Bullying the Senate Good Doctor for doing good..
Boxer & Pelosi are truly the Twisted Sisters of the 9% rated US Congress..

oxymoronic
California-Values

If the Republican Party had a brain!
If the Republican Party had a brain, Tom Coburn would be a poster boy for Republicanism.
- "Mr. Smith" goes to Washington and fights against government wasting YOUR money! On weekends he delivers babies free of charge. -

Unfortunately, too many Republicans like their pork, and big government, as much as Democrats.

WHAT
we need is an old fashion throw down, kick in the groin, knock out fight for these big spenders in DC.
May I suggest Mr. Coburn, that you walk up and kick Mrs. Vindictive right square in the b@lls. It’s a good a place to start as any and then contact me for a list starting with red nancy, and trust me the pork spenders list is a long one, and has both parties on it!

LMAO (not used with seatbuffers permission)

Free Ramos and Compean

Let US make
the rules for these pampered pimps! Wow-did I really say that? Guess knee jerks are sometimes fitting. Anyhow, the rules made by both the House and Senate have become self-serving to either party. They both abuse them and manipulate them. The fact is that these people are elected to do what is best FOR THE U.S. while respecting the inalienable rights of every individual citizen. Yes, the Constitution was written BY THE STATES FOR THE STATES UNITED. Instead of a strong union we have petty infighting and tradeoffs for pork in the various states. Those in one state are always willing to steal from the PEOPLE of the other 49 in order to better their standard of living. This is sheer madness and unconstitutional. How in the world can either have an "ethics" committee? Now that is an oxymoron if I ever heard one. While these jerks play footsies in- country our Republic is at risk from without and within its borders. It's about time that we give every one of them a kick in the butt by re-writing our Constitution to provide rules for the Senate and House under which they must live or return to their respective states. Until then we must all at once fax, telephone, write, and email every idiot in Congress protesting their BS. Let us watch them do business as usual when they are drowning in paperwork, tied up phone lines, and their fax machines run out of paper every 10 minutes (if they don't fry).

I know how he can get approval
If he only delivers the babies for Illegal Immigrants then they will leave him alone!

Lon
I'm independent. I don't care if the Congress-person responsible for this is Republican, Democrat or any other party. Quite frankly, I'm disgusted with both parties and probably 90% of all politicians. This investigation is wrong bottom line and if you have evidence regarding a current Republican who's in on this ethics investigation, I'll send him or her a not so friendly e-mail as well.

'Apparently Coburn is violating Senate rules' - Oh yes, everyone knows that Senators always follow their own rules including those on the ethics committee - NOT! How do we know Boxer and Co. are following their own rules as they investigate Coburn? You're use of the word 'apparently' is proof enough you don't have enough information to make this judgement call regarding the issue. You're guessing just like the rest of us.

Again, committee chairs have tremendous power over their agenda. This would disappear if Boxer really wanted it to. One of the first lessons in leadership is that the leader needs to accept responsibility for things that happen within his/her juridiction. Boxer is the chair - she is responsible more than anyone else. She should have squelched the investigation long ago.

Since you're so interested in who started this investigation, why don't you find out and send him/her an e-mail. As far as I'm concerned, that's water under the bridge that I have no influence over unless that same person is still on the ethics committee.

Boxer is a pig prostitute
Great article. Wonder why we didn't read about this in the MSM????

The justice in this case being so obvious it would be easy to relax knowing that Coburn will win, but Boxes is such a prostitute, such a pig--speaking of pork, that, who knows?, Coburn may lose, so let's keep the pressure on Boxer. We are writing letters to her and Reid today.

It seems to me
that the Founders envisioned citizen legislators, that would represent the people
and able to do their professions as well. I know they didn't envision lifetime tenure for
incompetent nincompoops. Maybe Luis has
identified Boxers former profession.

I hope Dr. Coburn dares her to bring this to
the Senate floor. I don't think she's got the guts. Betcha Dodd and company walk.

God Bless both Dr. Coburn and Jim Inhofe..me
I'm stuck with a couple of socialist/marxist
arrogant DEMONRATS.

The problem is that Coburn is NOT
a member of the elite lawyers club. He works for a living.

TEA PARTY...MAYBE WE
SHOULD MOVE TO OKLAHOMA..?
ELVIS

Good Senators
Maybe before the liberal idiots start woofing about the Muskogee Regional Medical Center, they should note where that hospital is. Muskogee is not a very big place. It is not a metropolis and serves mostly rural and Native American peoples. The people in the region are not rich by any means of the word. Also note that Muskogee Regional Medical Center only recently became a "for profit" hospital. I had to move from my beloved Oklahoma several years ago when my daughter was diagnosed as terminal. I can't wait to be able to move back and out of "The Peoples Republic of Oregon".

Just libs
showing how much they care about the little fella. They also did the same thing to Mother Theresa, making her shut down places of refuge for the poor and homeless, because some obscure regulation wasn't followed. I have met Dr. Coburn and he is a good man. He would be one of the few polticians I would keep if we could ever wipe the slate clean of the trash in Washington DC.

Free medical for Women
The Democrats have been pushing for free medical for years. Whats their problem? Oh yea I forgot, it is not run by the government free medical. Good guys doing good things for people goes against socialist dogma. The Democrats are looking pretty stupid, You can't help people because we said you can't.
I can see the testimony on C-SPAN, Yes I was delivering Babies for free, Take me away.

California' s Curse
The California citizens must feel they have been cursed. Which other state has the same caliber of officials as they do?

Ahnull,Boxer, Feinstein,Pelosi, just for starters. Most of the others are dubious to say the least.

It's no wonder the earth trembles with earthquakes...it is trying to heave them into the ocean. Maybe someday it will happen.

Lon:
"But Saunders is rather misleading in pretending this began with Boxer, when this is a dispute that predates the democrats taking over..."

Here's a quote from said article:

"When elected to the Senate, which was first run by Republicans and now Democrats, Ethics Committee members told Coburn that if he wants to treat patients -- largely poor and "at risk" mothers -- he could not charge them, and thus would have to eat the costs of his practice."

I don't think Saunders was misleading at all. The Senator was complying with the ethics committee all along. Now Boxer wants to change the rules once again. Boxer deserves the disdain that she's receiving.

Lon:
I said "I don't think Saunders was misleading at all."
I'm sorry, I didn't acknowledge that she may be misleading about the Nationwide scandal. So I was wrong on that point. But I don't think she was misleading about the ethics committee.
