Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Should Americans become more like Our Betters in Europe?

Clearly the 200,000 Germans who gathered to watch Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama at Berlin's Tiergarten on Thursday thought so. And in that Obama liberally challenged U.S. policies on the war in Iraq, global warming and U.S. interrogation measures, he gave the German audience the affirmation it craved.

A Pew Research Center poll showed 82 percent of Germans had confidence that Obama would do the right thing on world affairs. No wonder.

In Germany, it was all wunderbar. Addressing the throng as a "proud citizen of the United States," but also "a fellow citizen of the world," Obama seemed to be giving Europeans a role and a voice in an election in which they have no vote.

Not that Europeans haven't tried to play a role in U.S. electoral politics before. Who can forget Operation Clark County? That was the campaign waged by British paper the Guardian that encouraged Brits to write to voters in a swing county in the swing state of Ohio to urge them to vote for 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry -- because "the result of the U.S. election will affect the lives of millions around the world, but those of us outside the 50 states have had no say in it."

Well, they had their say, and Clark was the only county in Ohio to switch from supporting Gore in 2000 to Bush GOP in 2004. George W. Bush garnered some 25 percent more votes than in 2000.

To date, Obamaland has run an extremely savvy and effective campaign, but the European leg of the Obama world tour could be one big wrong turn. Figure that Obama already had the majority of votes among Americans with passports -- that's roughly 34 percent of Americans age 18 or older, according to the Economist. (In 2004, pollster James Zogby found that Americans with active passports preferred Kerry, while those without passports preferred Bush.)

Today, Obama is not polling as strongly as you would expect, given his media coronation. His European capitals tour probably did little to appeal to two-thirds of no-passport-required Americans who may not be all that impressed if the French and Germans go gaga for Obama.

While the speech went over big in Berlin, over time Obama's speeches seem notable for the irritating manner in which he straddles issues. There are no rough edges in his stump rhetoric. While he has a way of seeming to be critical, he is always careful not to make a sharp point.

The speech was classic Obamaspeak: "In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right, has become all too common. In America, there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe's role in our security and our future. Both views miss the truth -- that Europeans today are bearing new burdens and taking more responsibility in critical parts of the world; and that just as American bases built in the last century still help to defend the security of this continent, so does our country still sacrifice greatly for freedom around the globe."

As usual, his words appear to be analytical, but probably that's because he comes to no specific conclusion. There is no straight talk on this jet.

Obama opposed the Bush surge of troops in Iraq, and to applause in Deutschland, he spoke against the war. He told the crowd what it wanted to hear.

Conversely, Obama has proposed a surge of U.S. troops in Afghanistan -- a position that will require sacrifice from American troops who could use more help from abroad. Germany has sent more than 3,500 troops to Afghanistan, most of them essentially exempted from combat duty. Polls show that 85 percent of Germans object to sending more German troops into the southern part of Afghanistan -- yet Chancellor Angela Merkel's government did send a German combat unit into that theatre this summer. Obama had a chance to praise Merkel and speak in support of sending 1,000 more German troops.

This is what he said: "The Afghan people need our troops and your troops, our support and your support, to defeat the Taliban and al-Qaida, to develop their economy, and to help them rebuild their nation."

Before the speech, the Washington Post reported that an aide had revealed Obama "will ask Europe to shoulder more of the burden to help deal with global security threats." I guess that was it.

OK, maybe Obama didn't want to come across as a "cowboy," but he didn't exactly come across as a leader either.

When Obama went overseas, he had the perfect platform to take on Western Europe's defense-light posture, but all he could mutter was, "Merci beaucoup."

They weren't there to hear OBamBam,

NO WAY, JFK DID NOT GIVE HIS SPEECH AT THE GATE.

Just as an example of how the press gorifies ObamBam. John F Kennedy never made a speech at the Brandenburg gate, never. He visited there, but he did not speak there.

But have you seen or heard anyone in the media ever correct that statement.

We have visited Berlin multiple times, and spent time visiting the then West Berlin City Hall. Rathaus Schöneberg was the seat of the West Berlin city government during the Cold War and is the location where John F. Kennedy made his famous Ich bin ein Berliner speech.

-----------

And why doesn't someone mention that most of the people in the crowd in Berlin, were there to hear the "sewer sounds of the garbage generation," a couple of so called rock bands.

The point of that gathering ...
was: anyone could have been propped up in front of 200,000 concert-goers and looked popular. The music, the beer, and the food was free. That'll bring a crowd in any country. How many of those German youths would have come if Obama hadn't had an attractive warm-up act? I dare say this does have overtones of a vast media conspiracy.

If it's Thursday ......
Reminds me of that delightful comedy, circa 60's maybe 70's - "If It's Wednesday, it Must be Rome." Americans were becoming "worldly" taking 7-10 day whirlwind tours of Europe. The movie was intended as satire and comedy - and it was all that.
Mr. O's "fact-finding" tour is/was a joke! How much could he really and truly evaluate in a few hours at each of the locations on his itinerary? Photo-ops with foreign leaders and select military. As for the crowds in Germany and elsewhere, as pointed out, free food, entertainment, and don't forget curiosity are sure-fire crowd collectors.
Although I must say, perhaps BHO should have kept up his obvious basketball skills and opted for a career in the NBA.

Follow the money.
I have lived and worked in Germany for many years, traveling to every corner of it in the course of my work. I love the country's beauty, and marvel in its language and literature. However, I am also well versed in its history and have no illusions about them. They have been practically exempt from providing for their own defense for the last 50 years, allowing them to pump more and more money into their infrastructure and social safety net, and they want no part of any US politician who puts or might put them under pressure to significantly contribute to our global peace keeping efforts. Obama is not the man to place demands on them because most of his voter base doesn't support such efforts. Of course Germans prefer him over McCain, just as they preferred Clinton, Gore, and Kerry over the Bushes.

coronation
...change... the underlying message in Obama's speeches and positions (not that he ever has given much detail, nor really pumped by the prsss for more detials) is that he sees the US as being a better place if we follow the socialist countries of Europe's lead. I really do not want to live under the high and extremely complex taxes that these European "utopian" societies have to bear. Look at the tax rates in Europe, look at the complex and completely bloated VAT system -- this is what awaits us if we follow the "change" Obama wants.

Too Bad
We the People paid for a big portion of that trip - when Obama could have had his smiling face superimposed on those Middle Eastern scenes - eliminated Reed and Hagel who looked distressed anyway (as they probably know the real BHO) - and could have even placed himself shaking hands with the enlisted people - not just the big shots. Beneath Barack - that's the impression.

What's Next?
Now every future wannabe president will go overseas for a photo-op!

Geez, what an embarrasment. I'm glad theat BHO is finally being seen as the impostor that he truly is.

It appears that the electorate is finally waking up.

Redmanrt
Red man you are spot on.
They want to continue their free ride; defense without any cost. Obama would gladly do that.
Boomer, Fl

On Point
Great article. B.O. is finally recognized for the stink, rather than the sleek!
More please!
We need to get the word out on this racist wacko.

The Ugly American?
Who remembers this book from the 60s? A well-intentioned young man is sent to uncover the world's problems, but is constantly distracted by having to meet with world leaders. He returns from his trip inevitably spouting the political line from each country he visited. BHO passed up his one opportunity to meet with "the people." All we know for sure is that he now knows how to visit dignitaries. How does this set him apart from/above any other candidate?

Who votes?
In November only Americans will vote for their leader. It doesn't matter what Europeans think, and more importantly they won't vote here. The left might find thousands of dead Americans to vote, they might find folks to vote ten times, they might even find hordes of illegals to vote but the French, the Germans, Brits etc. will not vote here. Considering the rate of decline in Europe, it's impending Islamization, and it's failing institutional socialism I'm happy they can't appear at our ballot boxes.

The Europeans will support anyone that continues their free ride on defense. As previously pointed out the free ride funds the socialism they have become addicted to.

Emulate Europe Obama? Why, they're dying!

for Hardnox
Hardnox writes: "Now every future wannabe president will go overseas for a photo-op!"

Obama had never planned to go.

The main reason Obama took this trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, was that McCain and the GOP kept taunting Obama to see what conditions were like for himself, as McCain had done before.

The Republicans were hoping and expecting Obama would screw up overseas.

They were flat wrong. Obama did fairly well and the trip backfired on McCain.

IF EUROPE LOVES OBAMA

.....That would be enough reason for me to vote against him ...

.....Europe would like nothing better than to see America dragged down to their level of weak-kneed Socialism .....COLOSSUS

...PROTECT AMERICA'S SOVEREIGNTY - GET OUT OF THE U.N. ...

Obama/Europe
Once again Debra J. was right on the money. Windlass

Can do
Obama stands back to take credit for having the prime minister of Iraq agree with a time table. He fails to give credit to the military for giving him this nugget because they have put Iraq that much closer to victory.

Had he been president instead of Bush his declared policies would mean Sadam Hussein would be standing on his balcony celebrating the deaths of children blown apart by suicide bombers.

Obama is just like the rest of the democrats who have called George Bush and Cheney the worst criminals to walk the earth, while at the same time not bringing them up on charges, of any kind, or not voting against any of the funding they tell us is so desprately needed here right now.

Show me the beef! (is Jefferson still in Congress?)

Obama goes into Europe and represents the whining "can't we just get along?". To his credit he did ask for more German troops but did he ask them to change tactics from the U.N. don't shoot unless shot at to an aggresive find the terrorists they are the enemy and kill them?
Still in negotiations.

McCain represents the Ronald Reagan and yes even George Bush unique American CAN DO and
Get er done spirit. McCain said stay in Iraq for a hundred years because most people can not know when victory will be achieved and stuff tends to happen to make time tables pipe dreams. This is supposed to be a negative? Actually the military has such a time table but just doesn't announce it to the ENEMY BO.

Fake European Speech
The Bush administration has done all what Barak Hussein Obama has proposed in his speech. This guy simply couldn't think up of anything new. He's a dinosure, big body and no brain. This guy preferred showing hoop for tv show and skipped visiting injured troopers in the hospital. What a jerk!

IT'S ALL OVER FOR OBAMA ! ! !
Wave goodbye to the greatest charlaton, poseur, fraud, imposter and self deluded loser in living memory!!!...it's an absolute SCANDEL, how this American Idol could be a serious contender for president!!..the Dems should be ashamed of themselves for nominating such a obvious unqualified lightwieght!!
Sunlight is the best disinfectant!!...Obama is slowly decomposing before our very eyes!!
The American People have smelt a rat!!...he'll never be more popular than now!....it will be all downhill after the Convention!!!!
OH YEA OF LITTLE FAITH...have faith in the good common sense of your fellow Americans!!...there are simply not enough idiots to elect this deluded fool...this American Idol!!
Obama is unelectable...MCCAIN wins by DEFAULT!!

Obama Plays to the Pacifists
Europe had better think twice about what it wishes for. Today, Europe has no ability whatsoever to defend itself. It relies completely on the United States to bear the burden of its defense.

Barack Obama talks a good game with respect to pandering to the European liberal mentality. He, however, would likely be reluctant to do anything in any regard to act as a deterrent against any aggression, either waged on the United States and especially on Europe.

He would give a hell of a speech though, condemning the growing threat of attack against Europeans from non-assimilated Muslim immigrants. You see, Obama is a man of evangelic oration. To be more specific, a man of "just words."

OBAMA CRIME CHICAGO STYLE

********* CRIME -CRIME - CRIME ******

********** LOSE - LOSE - LOSE ************

While Barack "Barry" Hussain bin O'BoomBox (nee: Obamass) traipsed around Europe blasting the neo-Nazi National Socialist crowds there were 15 gang related shooting on the Southside of Chicago including a 2 year old girl - not fatal and a mother of 3 - fatal and a 16 y/o boy shot seated in a car.

The O'BoyToy swings his hands preaching about Burma, Bangladesh, and (at last) Zimbabwe as a "Citizen of the World" while the slum area of Hyde Park Chicago is a warzone where more died then soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

I got an idea
Lets start sending draft notices to all those Europeans who want to run our affairs while free-riding on our military capabilities.

That just might get their attention long enough to disrupt a few of their fantasies.

Another "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy"
Here's a great super-secret tactic to use in fighting the great threat of socialism in America and Obama as the POTUS: THE TRUTH.

Lots of people aren't political junkies, and they simply don't KNOW the truth about Obama. The media tells them how popular Obama is, how McCain has no juice, and they believe it.

Every day between now and November 4th, we need to reach out to all the members of our families, especially the young adults who might be swept up with all the Obamamania they see with their peers. Talk to your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers, the people on the bus with you (trying to save $$$ on gas), any and everyone you come across. We need people to be as INFORMED as possible by November, and we need to come out in record numbers to be CERTAIN the electoral college fully understands "the will of the people." We can't chance this one folks. This particular election will determine the life of America itself; will what our founders built be destroyed, or will we be able to fight off the home-grown socialists and communists? Like I said, we need record numbers.

under our noses
Isn't it odd, that a man of virtually no accomplishments should be so demanding? Have you noticed what his favorite word is? "Require".

"Eh huh well, you know … uh I think that there are … there are so many ... issues ... in which I am not an expert ... but REQUIRE ... you to be an expert uh that mm-mm the most important job that I will have as president is ... choosing ... excellent people tuh help to shape ... policy and provide me with a clear set of decisions."

"Barack Obama will REQUIRE you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism ... that you come out of your isolation. ... Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed."

"In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be REQUIRED to do more - not less. ... So history reminds us that walls can be torn down. But the task is never easy. True partnership and true progress REQUIRES constant work and sustained sacrifice. They REQUIRE sharing the burdens of development and diplomacy; of progress and peace. They REQUIRE allies who will listen to each other, learn from each other and, most of all, trust each other."

If listening to Obama has taught us anything, it's that when he uses the passive voice or an impersonal pronoun, he is still the subject. Obama requires us to do more, to work constantly and sacrifice unremittingly, to share burdens and listen to, learn from and most of all to trust, him.

J

Obama the Televangelist
I think a lot of Americans find themselves asking, "Just who in the hell does he think he is?". He goes to Iraq and Europe and conducts himself - and is treated - as though he IS the POTUS. He talks about audacity, which seems apropos considering he gave a Kennedy-esqe speech in Berlin despite not yet being a legitimate head of state.

Barack Obama IS the largely unaccomplished junior senator from Illinois, and the presumptive (and presumptuous) Democratic nonminee, but nothing else. He is perceived to have unleashed some sort of political tsunami, when in fact he barely squeaked by Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries, and only because of the Dems' twisted rules as well as the exclusion of Florida and Michigan. The rest of the world seems to believe that American voters are ready to stampede to the polls to vote for him, when in fact his lead over the uninspiring John McCain is in the single digits, and may in fact be a dead heat.

I believe he appears to many Americans not as a political tour de force in the mold of JFK, but as a televangelist in the mold of a multi-kulti Elmer Gantry. A lot of Americans have been wooed by the sales pitch, but in the end they won't buy the snake oil.
