Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

This month, opponents of scientific research set off an incendiary device at the home of Edythe London to protest her medical research at UCLA. In October, the research opponents flooded London's home. In the preceding two years, activists left bombs, which failed to ignite, outside of the home and under the car of two UCLA researchers.

Since August, activists have harassed UC Berkeley professors at their homes late at night and even leafleted the soccer game of a researcher's child, according to UC Berkeley spokesman Robert Sanders.

Who are these anti-research extremists and why are they waging a campaign of intimidation against law-abiding scientists?

They are animal-rights activists who oppose medical research with laboratory animals. Of course, these activists have a right to their opinion. But they do not have a right to terrorize researchers -- and their children -- because they don't like the way these scientists are working to cure disease.

"I think it's important to call this terrorism," said Michael Conn, co-author of the book, "The Animal Research War" and associate director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center. "This is not an effort to change laws or persuade people. It's an effort to frighten and intimidate."

Researchers have good reason to be afraid. In 2005, Jerry Vlasak, a Southern California trauma surgeon and leader of the North American Animal Liberation Front, which is an animal rights organization, told a U.S. Senate committee that he could justify killing researchers. Vlasak said, "I don't think you'd have to kill -- assassinate -- too many. I think for five lives, 10 lives, 15 human lives, we could save 1 million, 2 million or 10 million nonhuman lives."

Now researchers know that if they dedicate themselves to working on cures to save lives, they do so at the risk of risk forfeiting their own.

The scare tactics are working. In 2005, UCLA researcher Dario Ringach e-mailed Vlasak, "You win." Ringach pledged to stop animal research. In 2002, after being targeted and threatened with hundreds of calls, letters and e-mails by animal rights activists, Michael Podell, a leading HIV researcher, left Ohio State University and went into private veterinary practice.

For every Ringach and Podell, there must be many more young scientists who decide not to become involved in vital medical research because they don't want to subject their families to the harassment and they don't want to live their lives in fear.

Conn doesn't understand how a woman can have her home flooded and torched -- because she is researching nicotine addiction -- and there is no outrage.

Maybe it is because these activists claim that they are acting on behalf of lab animals that the public doesn't care that these anonymous bullies are terrorizing good people striving to save lives.

They compare themselves to Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Conn noted, "But I don't remember Gandhi or King wearing masks and coming at night, burning houses or threatening children."

He added, "Whoever thought that somebody doing ethical and federally regulated research would have to live like they're in a war zone?" In the age of the Internet, which allows activists to intimidate scientists with complete anonymity and no consequences, it may be time for universities to build Green Zones for researchers.

The vision of the annointed redux
These people are not disciples of St. Francis. They see themselves as "St. Zorro of the Beasts" and elevate animals ABOVE humans. Note they chose a constituency to defend that cannot refuse their oh so enlightened help.

The Animal Rights Activists
Of them, the Scripture says: "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, worshipping the creation and not the Creator." Idolators have a long history of becoming, and remaining stupid. And here is the classic example of it.

Gandhi and King?
They compare themselves to Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Conn noted, "But I don't remember Gandhi or King wearing masks and coming at night, burning houses or threatening children."

They are much more comparable to Nazi brown shirts.

Target Research
I'm suprised someone hasn't started taking out these activists.

I have a suggestion
Cease ALL federal funding for AIDS research. This hopefully would turn two of the extreme liberal wacko groups, the gays and eco-terrorists, against each other.

Corndog
And be sure you say that you are ceasing funding this research BECAUSE of the terrorist organizations and name them.

Put out posters with the usual African babies on them and the words "[Animal Rights Terrorists] killed this baby."

The usual selective quotes abound
Ghandi is often thrown around like a saint. His non-violence and vegetarianism were supposedly not to be separated. In his case he was quoted as saying "Most meat eaters are far less violent than some vegitarians I know."

Lets not forget the uber animal rights activist who sent a non-Jew to Auschwitz for cutting up a frog for fish bait. Adolf Hitler of course. He had a LONG list of "sins" against animals but had no problem rounding up and murdering six million human beings.

The whackoes like to point out that ONE sign of a future serial killer is cruelty to animals. There is the problem. To them ANY use of an animal, even as a pet, is "cruelty". They try to link hunting, fishing and trapping to serial killers. They have lots of celebrity equestrians among their supporters. I wonder how many of them know that PeTA would force them to "free" their horses if they got the power.

When Behavioral Sciences at Quantico came up with their "signs" to look for they were talking about kids cutting up live animals or burning crushing or drowning them NOT hunting or fishing or riding.

Where are the PeTA moonbats?
We used to be overrun with ARFs (Animal "rights" Fanatics) on Prodigy. You couldn't have any kind of discussion re: hunting or fishing without them popping up to "set us right". Maybe they don't really have the clout they imagined? Or did they lose what little they had?

Animal Rights activists
The Humane Society of the U. S. has no humane societies, no animal shelters, anywhere. And PETA euthanizes many, many animals.

They had one little fling where they would go to outdoor dog shows and release dogs from their crates. Setting them free, don't ya know.

They have all these naive, ignorant, feelthy rich celebrities convinced that they're wonderful and worthy of huge contributions ... or at least the celebrities' help in getting $ from other people ...and they plant themselves in local legislatures to pass onerous anti-dog laws.

Death of animals
I am fairly sure that there are actual calculations that equate non-human (critters) life to human (pestilence) life. These are:

1 human is equal to

37,960 voles
14,758 mice
225 parakeets
19.62 howler monkeys (only because of the urine and feces thing, otherwise the ratio would be MUCH lower)
7.5 rabbits
2.75 dogs (on average - breed specific numbers vary)
2.65 cats (again, on average)
1.25 chimps
1.01 gorillas
.80 all endangered species (this includes the Hooty Sporty Owl).

I, myself, have witnessed the majestic hooty sporty owl as this beautiful, and very endangered, bird nested in its only known habitat - the very rare broken K-Mart sign. It was a sight to behold!
