Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

For years, supporters of global warming alarmism have repeated an odd refrain: Even if we're wrong, we're right.

Sen. Timothy E. Wirth, D-Colo., said it in 1988, as the National Journal reported. "What we've got to do in energy conservation is (to) try to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, to have approached global warming as if it is real means energy conservation, so we will be doing the right thing anyway in terms of economic policy and environmental policy."

I regularly receive e-mails with similar arguments. Or, as one reader put it: "If global warming is not real, and we spend money trying to fight it, what harm will come of our mistake? Cleaner air? If global warming is real, and we do nothing, what harm will come of our laxity? On which side should we err?"

Savor, if you will, the lack of science in that argument. The global warming contingent loves to don the Mantle of Science as the reason to curb greenhouse gas emissions. But its backup argument is: It's OK if we're wrong, because we mean well.

What will come of the mistake of changing policies because of global warming alarmism?

The very question presupposes that the sacrifices that Americans will have to make are small.

Viewers of Al Gore's flick "An Inconvenient Truth" were warned of the dire changes on this planet and then were referred to a Website that tells people to buy compact fluorescent light bulbs, properly inflate their tires, drive less and turn off electronic devices when not in use. As if those changes would stop the predicted catastrophe.

Some of the most well-known global warming promoters are big-time energy guzzlers. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who signed landmark state global-warming legislation, has his Hummers and leases a private jet. A conservative think-tank, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, reported that, despite their signature issue, the Gores burned 221,000 kilowatt hours last year, or 20 times the national average, in one of their three homes.

To global warming glitterati, the noble approach to the issue is to push for treaties, laws and regulations that make other people and other industries do the heavy lifting on energy conservation.

Last month, a United Nations conference in Vienna approved a nonbinding agreement directing industrialized nations to cut their emissions by 25 percent to 40 percent of 1990 levels by 2020.

If the United States were to sign onto such an agreement, Washington first would have to reduce emissions by some 15 percent just to reach 1990 levels. Then America could work toward the new goals. In effect, Americans would have to halve their greenhouse gas emissions in 12 years.

How do you do that?

As for me, while I am a global warming agnostic, I am not stopping anyone from taking the bus. Schwarzenegger and others have argued that new technologies can light the way. But those that exist cost too much, which means that only effective way to cut greenhouse gas emissions is to pass huge energy tax increases.

Newsweek columnist and economist Robert J. Samuelson, a reasoned voice on global warming, wrote that he supports gradually raising the gasoline tax of $1 to $2 per gallon. I wonder how many Californians would be willing to not only pay $4 or $5 for a gallon of gas but more for every commodity. And Samuelson is clear that his modest gas tax can't do much to reduce greenhouse gases.

America's sacrifices could be for naught, as long as China -- which is or is about to be the world's greatest generator of greenhouse gases -- is exempt from any global warming pact.

To go the distance supported by global warming alarmists requires big changes.

If the alarmists are right, the whole world will have to change and it will be onerous. If the global warming alarmists are wrong, much of the sacrifices they demand will have been for nothing.

I say
Give it up for Global Warming!

Ooh-rah!

Otherwise we here in LA would be fighting such indigenous fauna as sabre-tooth cats and woolly mammoths, in addition to our daily freeway commute.

An inconvenient economy
Yes, isn’t it a coincidence that the solution is ALWAYS a tax increase, except when it is a tax increase and a trading scheme that creates classes of winners and losers.

Perhaps we should take a cue from Albore and make a movie about the dangers of Global Warming solutions. If we did it in a manner similar to Albore’s outright lies it would go like this:

In order to reach the latest levels proposed by the U.N. agreements the U.S. would have to impose $20.00/gallon taxes on gasoline so that only the ultra rich and government officials (exempt from the tax of course) would be able to drive.

All forms of electricity generation that use burning as a means of generating heat would be phased out within 5 years. This will create nationwide blackouts as 50% of the nation’s electricity generation is lost to the grid. At the same time this generation is lost most of the utilities affected would go bankrupt due to the loss of their revenue sources and capitol intensive generating sites. Those people that had electricity would see rates as high as $5.00 kw-hr. Albore’s electric bill would go to about $10,000,000.00/yr.

Loss of electric generation would cause massive shutdown of industry throughout the nation. In addition, any industry that used "burning" for generation of heat would also be shutdown. The combination of these things would immediately cause layoff of 50% of the population. That would then cascade to another 25% as the economy crashed.

Loss of farm products will cause massive starvation across the nation as the tractors and combines are shutdown. Food prices would skyrocket and those 75% that were unemployed would starve.

The Chinese who were exempt from the standards will then come over and take over the U.S.’s remaining 25% population. Any eco-nut AGW alarmists who are left would be shot out of hand when they speak up. But first, they will have to pay for the bullet that is used to shoot them in the head.

Wait, I thought ethanol
was the magic bullet for all of this. Uh....nope. Wait, no it was those little flourescent light bulbs....that's what was going to fix it....Uh....nope. Wind Farms, that's it. Well at least not on Cape Cod, right Teddy.

This stuff drives me nuts. The Church of Global Warming just doesn't get the fact that the politicians that support this nonsense have no interest or desire to "save the planet." It's about control! They can live your life better than you can!

They want to tax us into submission. Plain and simple.

Phi Scamma Jamma
Temperatures rising? It's global warming. Temperatures falling? It's inverse global warming! In either case the solution is to sacrifice your comfortable lifestyle so the ellightened acolytes can live in mansions, fly in private jets, and ride in limos to let us know how fortunate we are to have them to remind us of the evils of capitalisim.

What about the most vulnerable among us
You know, the "poor." When gas is $5/gal, how will the single mom working two jobs to make ends meet (did I paint that picture right?) be able to afford to drive to her minimum wage jobs and buy food for her kids? Oh, wait, the "rich" people will supplement her income! Prepare for huge tax increases and inflation that will make the '70's look like a boom!

It would be nice
It would be nice if Saunders applied the same logic to Iraq.

Even if Iraq is not a threat to US security, what harm can come from our mistake?

The H-Bomb Solution
No one ever seems to discuss the H-bomb solution, which was mentioned in a debate between Carl Sagan and William F. Buckley back in 1983.

I love this article!
It points out what Rush often says about liberal/democrat causes. It is not the result, it is the good intentions. So many failed feel good projects! But this failed project if actually carried through with methods and strategies its religious followers advocate, this country would be destroyed as we know it.

Bah.
Get the government out of it. Let oil prices rise, and let the free market develop alternative solutions.

IF the cost rises high enough, demand for alternatives will develop.

Making sure the government provided electricity is what created this mess in the first place. Demanding that they control and mandate solutions will only lead to more of the same.

What about them cows?
Why do the global warming alarmist not discuss the repost that claims the vast majority of global warming contributors are the zillions of cattle all over the worlds that feed methane into the atmosphere as they feed themselves?

Greenhouse vs Hothouse
Now that scientists have determined that the Sun will burn out in approximately 5 Billon years, I have started a campaign to root out those that would put themselves before others. Those that lay in the sun, drive convertibles, use solar energy, and use clotheslines are creating a world-wide disaster of biblical proportions. Stop using the sun's energy! Stop using the sun!!!! But, on a positive note, if the Sun burns out in 5 Billion years, at least the global warming problem will be taken care of....

The Real Thought Process
of global warming alarmists was in a recent Dilbert cartoon. The phrase used was "You can't save the earth unless your willing to make other people sacrifice".

Since When
Re: "I regularly receive e-mails with similar arguments. Or, as one reader put it: "If global warming is not real, and we spend money trying to fight it, what harm will come of our mistake? Cleaner air? If global warming is real, and we do nothing, what harm will come of our laxity? On which side should we err?" "

I have always been of the opinion that CO2 is NOT a pollutant.

If we were cleaning the air, that would be a cogent argument, but the global warming crowd have redefined gasses that are natural to the air as pollution.

Therefore, cleaner air is not a by product of the fight against global warming.

Holy Cow!
Debra I am going to have to read my San Fransicko Comical this weekend because I know they are going to form a lynch mob and at the very least tar and feather you if not actually hang you. Global Warming is their religion and just like the Muslims you insulted their religion. Get ready, they are coming.

Ever notice the Global Warming nuts pretty much react the same way as Muslims when you disagree with them?

Global warming stuff
The G warming angle is just another liberal ego trip and power quest;

If you want to read a brilliant and uncluttered analysis of all of the global warming drivel,
then Dr. Fred Singer has done it!! see;

One little excerpt:

Policy Consequences

If this line of reasoning is correct, human-caused increases in the CO2 level are quite insignificant to climate change. Natural causes of climate change, for their part, cannot be controlled by man. They are unstoppable. Several policy consequences would follow from this simple fact:

> Regulation of CO2 emissions is pointless and even counterproductive, in that no matter what kind of mitigation scheme is used, such regulation is hugely expensive.

> The development of non-fossil fuel energy sources, like ethanol and hydrogen, might be counterproductive, given that they have to be manufactured, often with the investment of great amounts of ordinary energy. Nor do they offer much reduction in oil imports.

> Wind power and solar power become less attractive, being uneconomic and requiring huge subsidies.

> Substituting natural gas for coal in electricity generation makes less sense for the same reasons.

In the words of Sullah
in "Raiders of the Lost Ark":

Ooh, looks dangerous. You go first.

utahnotmormon
That is rhe most convoluted batch of fertilizer in the history of Townhall!

BrainR-Lolo-Vic
The Global Warming Kooks sweat more because of their Tinfoil Hats. That is the ONLY warming Mankind can control. The BEST Meteorologists can only forecast weather accurately about 36 HOURS ahead. For LardA$$ Gore to claim he can forecast weather 36 YEARS ahead in an outright LIBERAL LIE! Ethanol is VERY costly to produce and its production will drive up food prices. Supposedly Livestock Farting in a BIG contributor to Global Warming. If you want to see 2 Girly Men in a slap fight, send an Email to PETA saying that the Treehuggers say eating more meat will reduce Global Warming.

The whole things smells of Liberals trying to impose their Drug Addled, Hippie Leftover, Communist Control Freak Values on America before YEARS of Drug Abuse starts killing of these Pathetic, 1960’s, Loonies. Hopefully, Global Warming will serve as The Yucatan Impact for these Dinosaurs.

Georgetwin
Actually the problem with those kooks is that there has been a shortage of tin. They then mistakenly used Aluminum foil in it's place. Aluminum foil doesn't block the harmful effects of RFI, it intensifies it. So ultimately their brains were cooked by a combination of recreational drugs and RFI from Venus.

First, do no harm
It's worse than you think: that is, the global warming madness. All you have to do is actually READ the alarmists' Bible, the IPCC report. It says two things. First, that if we all faithfully implemented the Kyoto treaty (requiring massive living standards degradation and keepinig Third World countries in poverty for another century), we could cut the global temperature increase by 0.2 degrees by 2050! I don't know about you, but I think I can live with 0.2 degrees. The other thing it says is that if we "radically cut CO2 emissions today" (and even more impossible task) temperatures would start to come down sometime after the year 2100. So, the scientific "consensus" the alarmists speak of are actually telling us that there is essentially nothing we can do. So why do it? If nothing we do will matter for the next 100 years, and then only slightly, why not wait ten more years and see if the "catastrophe" occurs as predicted?

LOL, George and Vic
You guys are in rare form today!

How about lead foil? It blocks Superman's X-ray vision. It should work for kooks, too.

the bleak future
While we discuss the ins and outs of so called global warming, we seem to be unaware of the dire consequences if liberals take control of all three branches of government.
Socialism will be institutionalized and by the time the American people wake up to what has happened there will be no turning back.

How did it end?
I have a question for the Church of GW. How did the last Ice Age end when "evil man" was little more than Sabertooth Tiger food? Glaciers stretched as far south as California. Most of Europe was one big ice sheet.

If the climate changed on its own then, why do you believe it is dependant upon man now?

I believe we can all be better stewards of our natural resources. However, the leftists have made environmentalism a strident and divisive concept. I agree with a statement made earlier. Al Gore and his believers don't really care about saving the earth. If they did they would "remove the plank from their own eye." It is all about power. The best way to attain power is to exclude the competition.

BrianR
If we used lead foil they would get heavy metal poisoning and become retarded and thus dependent on goverment subsidy. Wait.....BrianR......you're right......they have been using lead foil.

My question
To globull warming believers is if we humans can change the world's climate at will, how are we going to know when we have reached the "right" temperature? What is going to keep us from going overboard and causing a global freeze? Of course they either refuse to answer or call me names.

Hey all you people like me
who no longer have any withholding, while you are thinking about this new AGW Tax don't forget that your quarterly estimated tax payment should go in today because it's due on Monday. Just think how much higher that payment will be when the dems and the RINOs get this through congress.

LOL, Vic!
Too funny!

Oh the irony of it all!
I live in the heart of liberlaism as many of you know. If you don't, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. What I find ironic as day after day I read the moonbats in the local papers and swear by Al Gore, is you can't drive down any street in this area without seeing an enormous amount of road kill and litter! No one ever picks anything up, and one think that in an area that is overwhelmingly liberal you would not see any road trash or at least some volunteers out there picking it up.

Lolo
I visited San Fran a few years back. I was blown away by 2 things:
01. The Victorian Era buildings
02. The Filth!

Georgetwin
Not surprised. What is hilarious is how everyone always says what a beautiful city it is. Sure, as long as you don't look too closely.

My take on AGW
I think Algore's BTU Tax was intended to give China an economic advantage over American industry in exchange for the contributions Communist China made to Clinton/Gore.

http://www.dailyrepublican.com/clinton_communists.html

When the BTU Tax failed to pass then Clinton gave the Chinese missal technology that allows them to target American cities.

Clintons are getting money from Asia again and I think this AGW Hoax is simply a gigantic hard sell for a Carbon Tax that is simply the BTU Tax in a new shade of lipstick.

My Opine
You may be on to something there!

Wirth said more
Note that Congressman Wirth (2nd paragraph) said more than that cutting emissions wouldn't hurt so much. He said that energy conservation is the right thing to do both economically and environmentally, even if global warming isn't true.

In other words, Wirth is anti-energy, and hence anti-industrial, period. He wants to turn back economic progress because he thinks it's bad. He would prefer that we live in a more primitive society.

Someone should point out to him that more primitive societies, such as the Brazil of today, wreak total havoc on their environments in an effort to feed their people. Brazil has torn down vast expanses of the Amazon jungle for simple farming. Modern high energy, high tech society is much more environmentally friendly than Brazil, provided one doesn't go to the excesses practiced by China. Simple antipollution laws (against real pollutants, not carbon dioxide) work wonders.

Carbon dioxide is natural to this planet. Burning fossil fuels just returns carbon dioxide to the ecosystem that was originally derived from organic materials! Burning fossil fuels is recycling organic carbon!
