Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

EVERYONE’S HEARD of the 9/11 Democrats. The 9/11 Democrats are people like actor Ron Silver, comedian Dennis Miller and blogger/author Roger L. Simon. Stunned by the events of September 11, these people surveyed the political landscape and developed new views. A seismic event changed them and changed their politics.

A less noble creature is currently crawling out from Washington D.C.’s swamps. These are the 11/7 Republicans. Stunned by the election results of November 7, these Republican office holders surveyed the political landscape and decided that they had to distance themselves from the Iraq war to have any chance of preserving their political viability. While the 9/11 Democrats worry about the future of the country and matters of the highest principle, the 11/7 Republicans worry about their own craven interests in a completely unprincipled fashion.

THE POSTER CHILD FOR THE 11/7 Republicans is Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon. Oregon is a blue state (or a purple state if you’re a cockeyed Republican optimist), and Smith is up for re-election in 2008.

After the 11/7 election results, Smith had several epiphanies regarding the Iraq war, epiphanies he shared with the country on December 8. In an address that ephemerally made him a hero to the inmates in the virtual insane asylum that is the Daily Kos, Smith distanced himself from the war effort that he had long supported. From the well of the Senate, he forthrightly declared, “I, for one, am at the end of my rope when it comes to supporting a policy that has our soldiers patrolling the same streets in the same way, being blown up by the same bombs day after day. That is absurd. It may even be criminal.”

Declaring the Bush administration “criminal” may knock ‘em dead in the liberal blogosphere, but conservatives were decidedly underwhelmed.

Some conservative cynics even questioned the timing of Smith’s revelations. In the same address, he confided to the nation that he had been nursing growing doubts about the war for quite some time. The fact that he unburdened himself of these doubts only after the cataclysm of 11/7 seemed a tad curious. After all, if he felt the prosecution of the war was perhaps “criminal,” surely he shouldn’t have sat on such sentiments merely because there was an election afoot. That wouldn’t have been much of a profile in courage.

As a matter of fact, Smith’s entire December 8 address didn’t register very high on the political courage meter. Putting the fulminating against the administration aside, it was impossible to determine what Smith wanted or was recommending with his December 8 stem-winder. Regarding the then-recently released Iraq Study Group report, Smith was a veritable profile in ambivalence. At one point in the speech, he “welcome(d) the report” and observed that the “commission has just done some, I suppose, good work.” A few paragraphs later, he was less committal, downgrading his assessment to, “The Iraq Study Group has given us some ideas. I don't know if they are good or not.” A mere two sentences later, Smith castigated the report for counseling a strategy of “cut and walk.”

Even after his December 8 speech, Smith was not done with his amusing displays of intellectual incoherence. After the plans for the surge were announced, Smith released a statement labeling it “the President’s Hail Mary pass.” And yet he proclaimed himself a stalwart supporter of the troops, even while he publicly belittled their mission and their chances of success.

SO WHAT DOES GORDON SMITH, the poster child for the 11/7 Republicans, really want? Regrettably, Senator Smith was unable to grant me an interview, but I did get to chat for a few minutes with his spokesman, R.C. Hammond.

Hammond bristled at my suggestion that Smith’s comments on the war had anything to do with the Senator’s reelection campaign. Quite the contrary, according to Hammond, the two aren’t related at all. When I raised the issue regarding the odd timing of Smith choosing to unburden himself of his concerns only after the 11/7 cataclysm, an annoyed Hammond assured me that Smith’s December 8 speech was the result of six months of analysis and reflection.

As regards the Gordon Smith Plan for Iraq, the key ingredients seem to be saying “whatever the generals want” while offering yet more intellectual incoherence. For instance, Hammond says that the Smith plan would forbid Americans from engaging anything that has the fetid stench of sectarian strife. So while Smith would allow U.S. troops to engage al Qaeda fighters, the hostile, destructive and allied-with-Iran Sadr militia would be off limits. The Smith plan, as expressed in his December 8 address and as Hammond explained it to me, would have American troops withdraw to the “horizon.” Whether the “horizon” is in Sadr City, Anbar or Okinawa has been left maddeningly undefined.

DURING HIS DECEMBER 8 SPEECH, Smith referenced the fact several times that he is a “student of military history.” As a self-professed military history buff, I hope Smith appreciates the following analogy: Smith is leading his Senate career and potentially his entire party into a political Cannae.

Conservatives who have been and remain stalwarts on the war will be disgusted by Smith’s change of heart and tone. Longtime opponents of the war will not welcome him into their fold. Even those who have traveled a similar intellectual path as Smith claims to have journeyed will find the sincerity of his alleged epiphanies, given their timing, to be implausible.

In short, Smith, any like-minded Republican Senators and the RNC if it decides to support such Senators, will wind up like the Romans at Cannae: Surrounded by hostiles, without friends, cut off from the outside world. Like the Romans at Cannae, their fate will also be destruction.

And it will be deserved. The fact that the 11/7 Republicans are prepared to play politics with matters of such import is contemptible. On Friday, my co-blogger Hugh Hewitt published the thoughts of Lieutenant Mark Daily, a UCLA grad who joined the army a week after we declared war on Saddam with the full intention of serving in Iraq. On why he decided to serve, Daily wrote:

“I simply decided that the time for candid discussions of the oppressed was over, and I joined…Please remember that America's commitment to overthrow Saddam Hussein and his sons existed before the current administration and would exist into our future children's lives had we not acted. Please remember that the problems that plague Iraq today were set in motion centuries ago and were up until now held back by the most cruel of cages. Don't forget that human beings have a responsibility to one another and that Americans will always have a responsibility to the oppressed. Don't overlook the obvious reasons to disagree with the war but don't cheapen the moral aspects either. Assisting a formerly oppressed population in converting their torn society into a plural, democratic one is dangerous and difficult business, especially when being attacked and sabotaged from literally every direction.”

Mark Daily was killed in Iraq this past Monday. To say that the Mark Dailys of our country deserve better than craven political opportunists like the 11/7 Republicans is to merely state the obvious.

But hey, perhaps I have Gordon Smith all wrong. Like I said, I tried to interview him to hear his side of the story. But if he feels any of this is unfair, I can offer him a far greater forum than Townhall.com to set the record straight. Hugh Hewitt has authorized me to extend an invitation to Senator Smith to appear on his radio show.

Hugh and I both hope the Senator accepts.

I am a member of the Constitution Party.

Gordon Smith
I hope the people of Oregon vote him out, he is worthless. I voted for my republican candidate in WA but he lost to Cantwell because of King County (Seattle) being very very liberal.

I just read the post by CDR Will...
...and was about to eat my Glock 9 when this inspiring bulletin crossed the Fox News crawl:

"...Senator G.Smith of Washington to be honored at annual Ted Kennedy awards ceremony- "Profiles in Hutzpah"...The gathering of dignitaries, nicknamed the "Balsies",will be held on the same day the last American steps onto the last helicopter leaving Iraq, one step in front of the headsmans dull, rusty knife...In related news:Con.Pelosi innitiated the process of 'VietNamization' of the war in Iraq by tearing up a check, symbolic of support for the mission,on the Whitehouse lawn while chanting,'The real terrorist is Bush! The real terrorist is Bush!'...Most of congress and the entire Senate, minus Lieberman, gave her a standing ovation..."

Mmmm, poison me with your tasty lead, you little German vixen!

From Pasadena Phil's blog
"We are winning and the only issue is whether the GOP is going to jump on the bandwagon."

Who are "we"...and the GOP (which ARE Republicans) are jumping on whose wagon?

Again, answer the question, real simple...are YOU A REPUBLICAN?

Sanity
You can visit my blog and find out.

Sonny & Pasadena Phil
Oh by the way...speaking of RINOs...are you two Republicans?

Those of us
who love freedom are basically screwed.

That is - short of an all out rebellion. And that may only buy some miserable time.

The masses of America are more concerned with American Idol and Survivor and won't know what hit them until the tear gas cannisters are busting through the windows

I've been laughed at for believing that George Orwell was a common sense prophet. No special magic involved, just pay attention and cogitate.

Count the number of surveillance cameras as you travel the roads. Ask yourself why, if they are just for watching traffic conditions, they are pointed in the angles that they are? Hmmmm?

Why is it that we look to the government to take care of everything down to practically wiping out butts and then wonder about the lack of freedom and privacy.

Why do people think the government, at whatever level, ought to "do something" without realizing that the moment you tell the government to "do something" you just lost another part of your freedom?

The freakin' bureaucrat that just got hired by the career politician because he "knew somebody" doesn't give a rat's a$$ about your freedom or fairness or the concept of being a public servant. He or she has now landed a government job with all the perks and a retirement package and all they have to do is not screw up on a monumental scale so as to bring attention to themselves.

I have more to say but this is too long.

Virginia, Virginia...
there was no conspiracy to "decrease border and workplace enforcement thereby increasing the number of illegal aliens to a point where we are being told it is not possible to reassert control".

Simply put...Bush and the GOP were concern about issues like the war, the courts, and the economy...you know, the issues that most Americans cared about in 2004 instead of the one issue that was STILL there in 2004 but the RINO press like Ingraham didn't seem to care enough to push the issue with Bush when the presidency was on the line.

Bush and the GOP has NOT changed. YOUR RINO PRESS and their absolutist base DID.

And it cost the GOP in 2006...the only question is will it cost America the war, the courts, and the economy if in 2008 the absolutist continue to push the American voter toward a "moderate" Hillary?

Your move.

Quick read, no comprehension
My "explanation" was deliberately open ended as the term RINO press is not exclusive to Laura Ingraham, Peggy Noonan, Charles Krauthhammer, Rich Lowry and his cast of NRO writers...

Now either you read my blog where I named some of these RINOs and I defined the labels you throw around so carelessly--and already knew this...or you are incapable of understanding what you are reading.

If it is the latter, I can't help you.

If it is the former, then you should know one thing about me. I try to keep my promises.

I made one at the end of my last article.

Bingo Tasha Tchin
Makes me wonder why W. held the Rumsfeld firing until after the elections. Maybe he wanted some Republicans to lose seats? As more has come out (Totalization treaty, North American union, amnesty) I get the uneasy feeling we conservatives have been had. The plan all along was to decrease border and workplace enforcement thereby increasing the number of illegal aliens to a point where we are being told it is not possible to reassert control. "We can't ask them to leave". Horsefeathers. Si se puede(yes we can)We just need to vote out those who will not and elect those who will. It is still our country. Amnesty will sail through the Senate, the fight will be in the House. There are 44 Bluedogs in this new Congress. Combined with Republicans that produces a majority. I have no illusions that it would be easy to stop, but we have a chance. We need to keep the debate focused on border security and illegal aliens. If we allow them to paint us as anti-immigrant racists we will lose.

Sanity 102
I just visited your blog and I must say, I think you are just angry at everyone and everything. You really need to take a break and think through what/who you are angry at and exactly what it is you want. Your arguments make no sense here nor at your blog. You might start by defining your terms (like Republican, conservative, RINO, liberal, etc..) to agree to the generally accepted definitions. You can't have intelligent discussions unless we agree on the terms. Sonny just asked you to name the RINO media and you gave an incoherent explanation of what YOU think it means to be a Republican. On your blog, you say you are an indefinable but fierce independent. I think you are an angry, confused person. Take a break.

RINO press (AGAIN)

Sanity102

What I am requesting is: "YOU and your absolutist RINO {press} did".

I already knew what RINO means. But what is the RINO - press - you are refering to?

Is the "press" a publication of some sort or what.

Thanks

Sonny
RINO is an acronym for Republican In Name Only...

Which describes anyone that:

...refuse to call themselves a Republican.(except when they wanted/want the Republican President and Republican Congress to do something to make them happy...then it's "their party" that let them down.)

...those that view the GOP as "just a party" to be used...Republicans dislike using anyone.

Republican also do not think that "loyalty" and "support" is expendable...it is something that "friends, family, and allies" do and something that they can and SHOULD expect in return.

They are not for "job protection", work too hard to give out blank checks for government projects like building a wall on the southern border, and many own their own mom & pop shops and do not make war on business. Most adhere to the value of personal responsibility and have little time or inclination to blame it all on the government.

I'm not sure what they are...some claim to be Libertarian, some Reagan Conservatives, some Bucananites...but they are NOT Republicans...except in name only...

ah...but who's the majority now?
and what happened to the absolutes like Santorum and Hayworth?

And why does border state Arizona keep electing non-absolutist like McCain?

There isn't enough of you absolutist to convince the voter to kick out the illegals...to over turn abortion on demand or make partial abortion against the law...to define marriage nationally...but add your numbers (and you did) to the other extremes and guess what? You got EXACTLY what you wanted...a GOP minority.

Of course the result was a Democratic majority with Libs sitting on every important committee.

Talk about being "empty-headed...!" Exactly what was accomplished? Did you get your absolutist agenda passed?

And I find it ironic that you are all angry with Bush and the GOP for not doing what you want blindly and for no better reason than you are supposed to be their "base"...yet none of you feel compelled to return the "favor."

conservatives blew it,not
yea sanity 102 lincoln chafee was one of the most conservative senators out there. the idea that conservative legislatures wreack republican chances at the polls is laughable. What happens is that as time goes on and spin is added to campaigns those that falter begin to blur the lines between democrats and republicans. I think then it becomes an issue of why vote republican centrist or liberal, when I can vote democrat and get the real thing.

Tasha Tchin: excellent point
It is interesting that the RINO's keep blaming our strident stand on illegal immigration for having cost the GOP on 11/7. If that is so, why didn't the Lollapelosi Dems not include comprehensive immigration reform in their "100-day" circus? Because more than 80% of people want a halt to illegal immigration! Had we re-elected the RINOs, they would have already sealed the deal. I expect this will be a core issue for the Blue Dogs because it was pivotal to their being elected in the first place. The open borders crowd is deathly afraid that come 2008, we plan to finish what we started in 2006. We will not forget. Conservatives are winning and we must continue to "bring the pain".

I have had doubts about this war myself,
well not about the war really, but about the "politicaly correct" way we are fighting this war from the very beginning.

After 9/11 I figured for sure we were going to break out the nuclear weapons given that the Soveit Union faught for 8 years in Afganistan and got there buts handed to them. what made us think we would be able to fight preety much the same way and get a differant result?

Dubya's Exit Strategy
On 11/8, Dubya fired Rummie!!!.....clearly showing the way for all in his party to attack his Iraq Policy.
Tasha Tchin, Right You Are. Bush is no conservative and will continue to embarass the Republican party til his resignation.

Sanity 101
Republicans minus conservatives=Democrats. If you had bothered to visit the line I posted, you would have learned that Schummer was complaining that the Dems were out of touch. He was talking about Dem leaders. Meanwhile, Blue Dogs are beginning to populate the floor to put the squeeze on them. The Republicans are fumigating the floor of conservatives. It seems that everyone is afraid of us. Are they just superstitious or maybe we have power to swing elections? Maybe there are more of us than the establishment wants to admit? If you want to be a loyal empty-headed "what-ever-, as long as its a Republican" Republican, go ahead. You will end up greasing the way for the first woman president: John Edwards.

The happiest 11/7 Repub of them all
The happiest 11/7 Republican of them all is Dubya himself. Immediately after the Republican Party lost both houses of Congress what did Townhall's favorite "conservative" do? Gleefully suggest that now, with the Dems in control, he can finally get his nation-destroying amnesty and "guest-worker" scheme passed through Congress. Great job, Dubya!

2008?
If you leftist collaborators can't find any better candidate than you usually field you will loose again in 2008.

I guess Kerry is representitive of the modern Progressive Party.
Phoney as a $3 bill, Picture hangs as an ENEMY hero in their war museum.
Absentee Senator who misses %72 of the votes.
LIED to Congress and slandered our Armed Forces.
NO executive experience.
His only qualification is name recognition as a TRAITOR!

While you Communists cry and moan about Bush, remember YOU forced him into office by YOUR FAILURE to field a viable Candidate to oppose him!
RINO press?
You Commies have found a media we are unaware of.
Do you have a link?

RINO press

What are the names of the RINO press that Santity102 keeps refering to? He can't be talking about the MSM? Human Events? What?

California Phil
You're right...Bill DID get it...that's why he won twice and despite being a pig in the White House and showing no respect for that office, he is STILL beloved by the Liberals.

Arnold also got it...after getting all his bills trashed, he pulled the moderate road and got re-elected.

I got it and so did hundreds of politicians...which is why you will NOT get the hard conservative issues addressed.

What YOU don't get is that your absolutist issues LOST...along with the war, the tax cuts, and the courts.

That's it...game over...go home.

The next game is in 2008 and if Conservatives are going to try the SAME LOSING game plan, they will lose.

But then your people will have something to actually complain about--only please don't try to squirm out of the fact that this is YOUR (absolutist) fault.

Bush & the GOP did not change from the first 2 elections...YOU and your absolutist RINO press did.

Time for a Conservative Party
hosekuervo correctly states that thousands of soldiers that went to Iraq are Democrats. Given their volunteering I would bet they are conservative Democrats.

Over the years the Democrat part has abandoned its conservative base. Now we see the Republican Party doing the same.

Perhaps its time for a real Conservative Party that will support the values of all conservatives whether they used to be Democrats or Republicans.

KC

So, Let's Make A list
Is it 60 for runnin and 40 for stayin?

Or, 59 for runnin and 41 for stayin. Could make a big difference as time goes on tween now and November 2008. If Senator Johnson does not make it back, what is the count to stop a filibuster? Still 60?

Wahtever or whoever we have left in the Senate needs to make a lot of noise over the next two years to disrupt the retreat from Iraq and the war on terror.

OBL must be really happy right now. The dhimmis had better not quibble on their deal with AQ or there might be a 'pay immediately' bill coming due.

jerabaub

The U.S. military's presence is currently in 144 countries throughout the world. Give it time, pal, we ain't through yet. We go where we can when we can and all by volunteerism. Amazing, don't you think?

Perhaps it is perceived by some the Republicans are roasting their own. I see it as changing the menu to a good helping of Conservatism instead. It is time to put the RINO's in the garbage disposal and "cook up" the real stuff for the American political diet.

I guess the new mantra we can expect from the Liberals will be, "Throw the bums out". Is there anything else they can write about except impeach and convict? As the plumber turns the water off to repair the damage, so should Congress "turn off' the funds for Iraq. Sounds so simple. Of course, let's elect plumbers to Congress. Why didn't we think of that before? That's the strategy for success that we have been overlooking.

As for Santity102, from what he wrote, I don't think he knows what conservatism is. He doesn't need ME to tell him if he doesn't already know.

As for a draft, patriotism and a desire to do the right thing is all it takes to have all the people needed for the military. The problem is the public is getting a mixed message and is too confused to know what the "right" message is. Many of the young people today are misled by teachers who have received their training in the liberal educational institutions led by the war protesters of the 1960's. Instead of putting their life on the line for others, they would rather warp young minds instead. What disturbs me is that what they think they are doing is virtuous and honorable. In other words, to act against your own country is the right thing to do. How paradoxical is that?

Hey Sanity 101
Read this http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,245220,00.html.

It's Charles Schummer and his new book blasting the Democrats. That's right. Schummer. I had to read it twice myself.

When are you going to get it?

Forgive my typing.
In the subject field of my post, I meant Bush, not Nush.

I was so carried away, so enraptured, that finally we have a president who understands our mission as a nation, that I made a typo.

But what is important is what we do now. Not my typo.

We can change this world!

Nush, neocons right, RINOS wrong.
We now have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make our world a better place.

We are blessed to have a president who has the conviction to improve this world.

There are probably 100 nations in this world whose leaders oppress their peoples.

As Barnett's article asserts, we Americans have a responsibility to the world's oppressed. We have a commitment from the Almighty Himself to help oppressed populations turn their torn societies into democratic, pluralistic ones.

Reinstate the draft now. The oppressed of 100 nations are depending upon our sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, to enter their lands, remove their despots, so they too can bask in Freedom's sunshine.

We finally, at long last, have a president who understands what is at stake, and is not shy about sending our military on a mission to bring democracy to the world.

We are a wealthy nation for a reason. We have this wealth so it can be utilized in assembling a military such as the world has never known, to enter these lands where despotism reigns, freeing people from bondage.

Why would the Almighty have blessed our nation with such abundance and wealth, if not that we use it to improve the world?

What better sacrifice of our young, of our best and brightest, of our treasury, than in the quest to make this world a better place.

At long last, we have a president who understands.

Reinstate the draft now. Let us begin!

Negotiating
War is a negotiating too. It introduces indisputable facts. Very clarifying.

Gaylord
What are you going to impeach on? Going to war in accordance with the 1991 ceasefire that obliged us to return to remove Saddam and his government if he broke the truce?

Hose- You've been partaking of your product again. Those RINOs on the Iraq Surrender Group just wrote a bunch of diplomatic drivel. Diplomacy doesn't work with Islamofascism. When you negotiate with someone who wants nothing more than to kill you, all you do is slow down your own response to his blows while he keeps working on his weaponry. Diplomacy worked REALLY well for Stalin when he signed the non-aggression pact with Hitler, didn't it.

The left undermines us
At every turn the left, liberals, democrats, progressives, whatever they are, undermine our efforts in this war and everywhere else. Your papers with your announcements about CIA activities and activities of troops you question have caused much damage and many casualties of those who are serving in harm's way.

Find something patriotic to do and I'll change my mind. The left is an enemy within in this great country.

Sanity 101: Bill Clinton gets it. You?
The Dems barely regained "control" of Congress by electing new conservative Blue Dog (Reagan Democrat) members. Clinton admonished Dems to beware soon after the election: "the voters have not given us a mandate, they have given us a chance." Dems won by veering right. GOP lost by veering left. Who doesn't get it? With your logic, if Kucinich were the GOP party favorite, you would vote for him principles be damned. You're right. There are only two options. Vote Republicrat or something else. I'm voting something else if my principles are trashed under the globalist screw-the-voters steamroller.

make some sense
You didnt have to tell me there were wmd's, because 17 violations of UN (useless nations) violations and shooting at our planes in the no fly zone was enough for me to attack. but regarding the troop buildup: I dont support continuing it unless they change the rules of engagement and let our guys kill the little plump Iman in Sadr city and blow away neigherhoods in Ramalha. UNTIE THEIR HANDS MR PRESIDENT AND WIN THE DAMN WAR

Did YOU honestly think
that the RINO press and their base could bash Bush and the GOP for 2 solid years and retain power?

This would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

You've got two players...really, despite the Ross Perot hype and the 3rd party dreaming...there are only two viable parties. You had TWO options...just two. You go after the Dems--or you go after the GOP.

If you go after the GOP...and the Dems are going after the GOP...what does MIDDLE, INDEPENDENT, AND BUSY America see? Two opposing parties fighting each other or two opposing parties AGREEING that it's all Bush's and the GOP's fault?

The fact that the 11/7 election was even close is amazing.

The fact that Conservatives didn't even get it...that they STILL don't get it...is beyond belief.

Simply put: we have a Democrat Congress because YOU weren't happy with the tax cuts, the removal of two horrific regimes, and the appointment of great judges including Roberts and Alito. You wanted to solve decades old immigration problems and centuries old government spending...and let's be honest, you wanted to tell the White House and the GOP majority Congress what to do.

The alternate press is in danger of being regulated because YOU bullied any 9/11 convert and any possible ally with your strict interpretation of what it means to be "conservative".

You've got 11/7 Republicans because politicians are in the business of getting elected (and it is extremely stupid and/or naive to think that a politician can succeed without satisfying the GENERAL public--NOT just his "base".) The fact is that YOU and your absolutist views did NOT...let me repeat this...DID NOT, produce for the politician.

So sit back and watch what your arrogance cost America. You WERE the majority. You HAD the ability to fund the troops, to change the world of terror, to change our courts, to keep our economy strong and viable against an ever growing China.

Now, you're the minority--and according to YOUR view point, minorities don't count. At least you didn't want them to as long as YOU held the majority.

We have less than 2 years...God, I pray that Conservatives go back to being conservatives with a small "c" and realize that America isn't all about them and their point of view.

hosekuervo?
Is it just a coincidence that you chose the name of a rot-gut booze as a handle? So your "facts" are more embued with "truthiness"? Make a point or go away.

One more point
You might also note that analyzing the independent vote seems to be gaining increasing importance in polling. That is because independents are growing in number and I'll bet they are growing more conservative. It might help you focus on being a conservative rather than Republican/Democrat were you to reregister as an unaffiliated independent. We need to reassemble in neutral territory. Both parties are marginalizing us. Dump them.

The first and foremost step in remedying
this epic, strategic military blunder is to impeach and convict. Even a plumber shuts off the water source before attempting to repair the damage.

Harry Truman remembered
It sure has been a long time since you could call a democrat a peacemaker and patriotic. Democrats of today are folks who believe we were wrong to become involved in WWII. Getting attacked doesn't phase them in the least. This great country clearly has an enemy within and they are feeling mighty big since November 7, 2006. We'll see.

I always have great hope, likely that comes from a lively and sure faith in God. This country has been truly blessed and we have been and will continue to be most generous with our blessings. Ever hear a liberal refuse to acknowledge the charitable nature of this country? Yikes! Is there anything about the blessing of your citizenship in this great country you are not ticked about, liberals? Goodness sakes!

I join the majority of us who are on our side in this war on terror we did not ask for.

Amazingly surprised
Im surprized at how many so-called conservatives in these blog rooms are liberal big-gov types and don't even realize it.

The big gov that has been produced by this admin is mind boggling to me a a fiscal conservative.
The waste from this "so-called" conservative admin is a disgrace to the definition of conservatism.

Neo-cons think their conservative but in reality they are just another form of big gov liberalism.

This is the issue the Republican Party has to get through before 08, or I guarrantee they will lose bigger than they did in 06.

Meanwhile, Neo-con Liberals like the author of this article want to blame and bash the fiscal (real)conservatives who are fed up with the big gov liberalism from this admin and the party.

As a result of their failures we got more big gov liberals in 06.

The left wing in the Repub party becomes more and more hypocritical by the day in my opinion.

Offer up some substance besides socialism or get out of the way and/or out of the party to preserve conservatism.

Expanding on Buck's point
It is also important to remember that the new Blue Dog Dems who go elected are conservative and they were excluded from the Lollapelosi "100-day circus". Yesterday, they showed some muscle by uniting to challenge the Dem leadership on their "cut and run" non-binding resolution. It just seems to me that the nature of the game might be changing but it isn't necessarily the conservatives that are on the run. For all of the Rinos that stand to lose their seats, there are conservative alternatives from either party. As conservatives, if ever there was a time to vote our principles, this is that time. We are not Republicans or Democrats. We are conservatives and we are in the early stages of winning. The establishment pols of both parties are falling in line with the "moneyed" interests because it is too hard to stand out and try to reconcile words to actions. There is comfort in blending into the flock. Now we have to thin the flock. Think conservative and lose the Republican/Democrat talk.

Senator Smith (Rino, Ore)
Unfortunately, I voted for the bum. No more. I just hope we can get a true Conservative elected, or even nominated, but that is unlikely, as the majority of his votes come from the Portland area, which is very liberal. If he is on the ballot, and the Dem is a liberal, I will write in "none of the above". I have written to him, but he never answers his mail, so I don't think he is interested in what his constituents think. So, He has received my last vote. A conservative has little chance in this district.

Touchet
Alllllll the typical Lefty/Defeatist points are there; you didn't miss a note!

You even finish off with the standard finale: "America must developa strategy..."

Tell you what, Genius: why don't you tell us, what would this winning strategy be? We're all a bunch of dumb Neocons here, all we can do is take our talking points from Karl Rove, so how about you show how smart you are, and suggest a winning strategy for dealing with an ideology...

Profiles in Cowardice....
A book all Americans need to become familiar with is COPPERHEADS~The Rise and Fall of Lincoln's opponents in the North.[Jennifer Webber;Oxford Univ.Press:October,2006...Forward by Professor James McPherson]. The book details the virulence of Democratic opposition to President Lincoln;his Civil War policies...in particular...Generals (Grant& Sherman)who prosecuted these policies at staggering cost(60,000 Federal troops in fewer than 6 months in 1864)as well as spelling-out the crass fecklessness--boardering often on TREASON-- of should-be supporters.[One again:New York Times was right up there as anti-Federal/Lincoln"fire in the rear".Resentment of US military is also noteworthy(voted pro-Republican en bloc until 1936).RINO republicans take note:Americans are ready to be called to sacrifice! You and your Yuppie enclave are about to be summoned to reckoning. The Democratic remnant is utterly corrupt and enfeebled(PRETTY BOY EDWARDS;LADY MACBETH CLINTON;OBAMA HUSSEIN BARAK!!!);the nation needs another Lincoln;FDR or...on the world-level...Publius Cornelius Scipio(SPQR) to take-on Islamo-fascists. If RINO's can't stand the heat~beware the kitchen!Ultimately even PC'd history is unsparing judge of Profiles in Cowardice. A. McVarish, Houston

We Started Cleaning Out The Closet 11/7
But not all RINO's were up for reelection.

Gordon Smith you're one of a bunch more who need to go in '08!

McCain is another one. Instead of checking his presidential credintials he needs to be checking his ability to hang on to his Senate seat.

Notice that MOST of the Senators that voted for the amnesty/citizenship package were NOT up for reelection in '06?

Remember.

My, my, my, the repubs are..
hosting a feast and the main course is the repub party. So many different recipes are being used to roast the entree. Remember the adage about too many cooks.

9/11 convert
Before 9/11, I had been a life-long Democrat, mouthing liberal drivel, collecting 'entitlements', not really in tune with current events or politics or, it seems, reality.

The towers came down, my interest came up and I started looking at the political world around us, really looking.

It was a quick transformation, almost overnight. Now, I'm a conservative and a card-carrying Republican and I'll never go back.

I guess that means I'm smarter than I thought I was. Most liberal Dems seem to be too easily convinced by Dem lies.

By the way, has anyone seen a new Ron Silver movie? I haven't. Has he been marginalized by liberal Hollywood? I wouldn't doubt it. It would fit in with the liberal lies of 'equity' and 'tolerance'.

Pure politics
There can be no doubt that this is a purely political stance taken to protect the Senator's chances of getting reelected. Politicians are what they are...interested mostly on keeping themselves in office!

Jerabaub: I am sure you are only trying to make some brilliant point in injecting the plight of Africa into this conversation. We all know that no military draft is forthcoming, and we also know that this war is about much more than democracy. It is about out national interests, first and foremost...the spread of democracy is a side item at best. But that does not mean that it is not important; another beachhead of democracy in that region can only help to inspire the pther oppressed people in he region like Libya, Syria, and Egypt to make a move towards democracy as well.

To Mountain Rose
Mountain Rose writes: Saturday, January, 20, 2007 1:18 AM Down the Rabbit Hole we go every time the Left is in power.

But ever since the 1968 Democratic Convention, the Left has been gradually taking over the once more moderate Democratic Party, and have been sewing their evil seeds everywhere they can.

Now whenever I hear the Democrats speak, I hear insanity speaking. I am hoping that they do not really believe the nonsense they spread, because that would mean that a large percentage of our country has gone mad! It seems as if some alien force has come in, taken out their brains and inserted some alien brains.

How can people not want to defend their own country? How can they spout such disgusting vitriol for their homeland?

And how can we ever make our way back to national sanity?

This is what you get when politicians, be they demo or repub, care more about being reelected than they do their own country. The politicians say that they have to pay attention to reelection or they can not accomplish the goals they desire. The problem is that after a few months they lose track of everything but reelection. It becomes their sole obsession of life. The Republican described in the article above has gone over to the dark side in an attempt to preserve his chances of reelection. This reminds me of what Bejamin Franklin said about safety. “Those who give up essential liberties for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. “ The only difference in this case is that it should be “those who give up their principles for political office shall have neither. If this Republican polititian thinks that he can reverse his stance and be reelected by a largely socialist electorate in Oregon he is sadly mistake. Perhaps if enough of the RINOs see this they will attempt to de-RINOrize and grow their tiger stripes back.

...11/7 Republicans
When the going gets tough, the tough get GOING!

It's just simply to easy and a real 'cop out' when you go with the political flow instead of the facts that still remain about WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE & HOW the Radical Islamic Terrorist's of the World, including al-Qaida, want our Country, it's Culture and the Freedom we represent to the World, GONE...

What part of the word 'enemy' don't some understand???

Let's reinstate the draft now!
On justifying the rationale for invading Iraq on the American people "having a responsibility to the(world's)oppressed...and in assisting a formerly oppressed population into converting their torn society into plural, democratic one", let us extend this magnanimity and compassion to the continent of Africa, for example, where probably two dozen nations could benefit from an American invasion to remove the yoke of oppression, liberating them.

Certainly the Africans are every bit as deserving of the sacrifice of American blood and treasure as Iraqis. Brutality exists there, as well as with Saddam.

And certainly we would not want to be perceived as discriminating against Africans. All persons, regardless of color or creed, are deserving of being liberated from oppression by the sacrifice of our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters.

I submit we resurrect the draft, and field a 4,000,000 member army to be placed in the service of bringing democracy to the continent of Africa.

What could be more noble!

While we are at it, it is unfair to limit our democracy crusade at the point of a bayonet merely to Africa.

There are probably fifty or more nations around the world whose citizens are oppressed, and in need of armed intervention on our part.

We will make this world a better place!!!

Thanks Doug
You are pointing out one of the half-truths of the Left that seems to fool people who only half-way pay attention to the news.

I remember the reasons that were given during the run up to the war. I was laid off at the time and was glued to the news. I saw every press conference the administration held, and the things you say agree with my memory.

As soon as I heard the Left talking about it, I knew that either they were misinformed, or lying.

But they seem to be so well organized in their ability to spread their lies, half-truths and talking points so rapidly.

The truth takes explaining to someone who wasn't paying attention, while a lie can be told in a soundbite.

"Rogue Repulicans"
Conservatives and republicans need to do a better job of staying on message. It is amazing how many varied answers there are to why and who got us into Iraq. Im sure we all have heard the wmds reason. Its as accurate as the No New Taxes pledge break that ruined George H.W. Bushes 2nd term. The answer is in Authorization for use of Force against Iraq 2002. in it are 2 reasons. 1)National Security 2)Enforcement of all relevant U.N. security council resolutions. In that law are over 20 examples of how Saddams Govt was either a threat to U.S. security and or continued to be non compliant with U.N. resolutions. Some talked about wmds many did not. Democrats have been not masters at, but very persistent in taking part of the issue and reframing it so as to divert attention away from the overall princple of the basic issue. This is where conservative, republicans I think get messed up is by leaving their core principles behind as they try to chase after misleading points. Much like the contract with America in every issue we need to,when faced with a prolonged assualt to return to the core priciples they win every time.

Down the Rabbit Hole
we go every time the Left is in power.

The Democrats of forty years ago knew what it meant to be patriotic, to stand up for one's country and to defend her against all foes, foreign and domestic.

Was there corruption back then?

Yes, there has always been corruption since the fall of man in the Garden.

But ever since the 1968 Democratic Convention, the Left has been graduslly taking over the once more moderate Democratic Party, and have been sewing their evil seeds everywhere they can.

Now whenever I hear the Democrats speak, I hear insanity speaking. I am hoping that they do not really believe the nonsense they spread, because that would mean that a large percentage of our country has gone mad! It seems as if some alien force has come in, taken out their brains and inserted some alien brains.

And how can we ever make our way back to national sanity?
