Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Conservatives are in a funk—one that threatens to turn into a full-blown retreat from the battlefield of ideas.

Everywhere I turn I encounter conservatives ready to give up for the next few years. After all, many of us rightly feel a bit betrayed by our elected officials given how badly they performed over the past few years. And many conservatives are hoping that two or four years of liberals actually running things will wake America to the dangers they face.

It’s hard to blame people who feel that way, but they couldn’t be more wrong.

Even a mere two or four years of liberal ascendency in Washington policymaking could do immeasurable damage to our economy and our freedoms—damage that could take years or decades to repair, if ever. Once a liberal policy is in place it is almost impossible to reverse it.

Don’t think that a few years of liberals in charge is that dangerous? Just take a moment to consider what liberals dream of doing once they gain absolute power.

There is no aspect of our lives—none—that today’s liberals concede is off limits to the meddling use of government power. In their vision there is no dividing line between the public sphere and the private sphere. Limited government is a concept that makes no sense to them.

A great example of this phenomenon is Time magazine’s columnist Joe Kline’s recent proposal. Kline just recently called for—get this—a reduction or elimination of the use of air conditioning in America. (This is a measure that would be wildly popular in Arizona, Texas, and Florida I’m sure).

Air conditioning, you see, consumes 4% of the energy used in this country, and thus by his lights has become a serious threat to national security. Wars may soon be fought over air conditioning—or at least the energy we use to power it—so we must reduce or eliminate its use.

Air conditioning also adds to global warming, makes us more dependent upon foreign oil, and not coincidentally annoys the heck out of Joe Kline, who happens to like it warm or even hot and muggy.

Kline’s proposal is a perfect example of how liberals think: turn a personal goal or pet peeve into a matter of public concern, and then advocate the use of government power to achieve the desired result.

Kline’s vision is no mere pipe dream. You may recall that California’s Energy Commission recently sought control over every thermostat in the State as a means to save energy. And both the national and many state governments are mandating “renewable” energy and “renewable” fuels as part of the energy mix for the future.

Energy policies are just the tip of the iceberg—although control over energy gives government control over pretty much the entire economy already.

In a world run by liberals literally no aspect of our lives will be outside the legitimate regulation of government. That is because anything—even what temperature you like to keep your house—can be turned into a matter of legitimate public concern.

Everything we do, including breathing, eating and of course procreating, can be argued to have an impact on those around us or the great mother earth. And if it affects others, it can and should be regulated by those who know best, at least according to the liberals.

Liberals want to regulate just about everything: where we live, what fuels we use, what car we drive, whether we can drive or be forced to use government mass transit, where we send our kids to school, what doctor we see, and even to what extent we express our approval or disapproval of others’ lifestyles. It’s hard to find something liberals don’t want to regulate.

Is that a world you want to live in? A world where all our liberties are subject to the slightest whims of lawmakers and regulators?

Whatever our personal feelings, conservatives simply can’t afford to indulge in the funk many of us have fallen into. The price we pay for handing absolute power over to liberals is just too high.

What’s at stake are the very concepts of personal liberty and limits to government power.

We can’t afford to just walk away from this fight.

Nice but. . .
Conservatives have to accept the fact that the majority of this country no longer values freedom. They want to be fed and they want to feel safe. Anyone who doesn't yet see the political tidal wave that's going to make the landslide of '72 look like a toss up is delusional. We have only Bush and the GOP to blame. They brought this on all of us.

Conservatives are wasting their time if they think they can convince the millions of obese, moronic Americans who've copped a slave mentality, that the answer to their problems is hard work. Faced with that and the Left's promise of free necessities at others' expense and you can see which one is going to win.

Eventually conservatives will have to unite, relocate to one or more enclaves, and establish their separate sovereignty(ies) and even risk armed rebellion to protect themselves. We have learned from Vietnam, Iraq and immigration that the US government can easily be defeated when faced with a determined opponent.

When law abidding, "decent", hardworking, gainfully employed, heterosexual, unhyphenated Americans have been properly fleeced of their hard earned wealth to finance the foolishness of government programs for freeloaders and loafers, then perhaps they'll be ready. But not now. It will take time.

Please let me live long enough to see this.

Thank you Antonin Scalia and your four comrades.

Good article, David,
I agree with you. We cannot just sit back and let Obama skate by without a fight. He is lying to the American people and it is important to bring his lies to light. It does not good to sit back and do nothing...in fact, if you do, you are a big part of the problem. And JD's, as an aside to your diatribe, Justice Kennedy is the one with the comrades...Scalia and Roberts are on the side of the constitution and the Supreme Court interpreting laws instead of making them.

Wrong!
We are not retreating from the battlefield of ideas. We are entering it - for the first time in a very long time.

You have to make a fundamental choice - people or ideas. You cannot have both. By supporting those politicians who have eschewed limited government ideals as impractical, we have supported the destruction of our ideology. Why would the "centrist" or "independent" take a look at minarchism when we ourselves do not support it? We have now reached the realization that the sell-outs must go if our ideals are to be restored.

Your second error is that you imbue liberals with a sense of efficacy they do not possess. A liberal is a complete incompetent in the physical world. If it were not for the type of people that are conservatives, they would be starving in caves. They are too incompetent to dole out destruction of any magnitude; they can only give us slow decline. They cannot even pass liberal legislation despite owning both houses of Congress. They are not likely to do much more damage if they own the White House also. They have always relied on Republicans to make their destructive schemes work and will cower like rats when there is no Republican there to say, "Okay, okay, we can make your scheme work. Just please stop calling us heartless." We have simply reached a point where we will not help them anymore.

THEY'VE DONE THIS ALREADY
I can remember sitting in my living room in the winter of '76-'77 - the coldest winter since they started keeping records- and Jimma Cahtah came on television scolding the American people for being so selfish by sitting in a warm home.
He said we had to "wehyah swetahs" and "lowah the termostat" and to "cunsehve."
Let's see, they want us to turn down the thermostats, turn off our air conditioners, take mass transit.Walk.Make compost boxes inside our homes.
There was a motion in the state legislature here in New York last year where they wanted people to take all of their cans and bottles BACK to the supermarket.
I guess what I've been reading here at Townhall about liberal plans for us does make me think they want to convert this nation into cave and tent city dwellers in between the liberal bastions of Los Angeles and the Hamptons where the libs can live in their 50,000 sq foot air conditioned mansions, drive fleets of Hummers and fly around in Lear jets.
The rest of us can ride our bicycles and light our homes with a single lightbulb powered by our windmills.
Heat? we can all huddle together like cattle.

Back to the Stone Age
Yes, Standtall, that's exactly what the libs want, with an intellectual elite guiding it.

I am sometimes exasperated that many people don't realize that the bible of liberals is B.F. Skinner's "Walden Two".

To quote just one sliver of it, "A way of life in which each person used only a fair share of the resources of the world and yet somehow enjoyed life would be a real step to world peace."

He wrote the book in 1948, kind of like his Mein Kampf, and so many real Americans have ignored it.

Read it, and you will know the mind and soul of a liberal.

IF,
Obama should become "President" with a socialist led congress, we will become a communist country with no turning back.

It will stay that way until an armed revolution begins.

The blame? partly republicans in Washington, with a larger part attributed to an ever dumber and ultra lazy population

Sickening isn't it??

Wendy
You are completely right when you say that they only have the power we give them.

The solution is two-prong - eschew the RINOs, and ignore, counter, and/or evade to the best of our ability, all regulations that drive us to the liberal world. That means turning up your thermostat, idling your car, failing to get permits to drain the swamp on your property, etc.

Nice try, Strom
That's all.

Increduous
And your intelligent, well-reasoned argument against him is...?

Nonexistent.

Wow, what a mischaracterization.
First and foremost, the article in question specifically states that raising the thermostat a few degrees in summer and lowering it a few during winter is a personal virtue. He'd just like to see leaders talk about conservation.

Where's the hysterical cry for massive legislation? C'mon, man.

Liberals are *extremely* interested in personal liberty. That's why we're so upset about the FISA bill in front of the Senate right now.

If we're going to deal with the very real problems of global warming and the energy crisis, we need to start talking solutions, not this cheap fear mongering for more page views.

The Misery Index
Face it, socialist Dems just want everybody to be miserable. Without misery, their policies fail; and with their policies, everyone will remain miserable.

SO SO
I do agree that most citizens do not value freedom, but most of these are the remaining, still walking hippie generations, fraud-failure dropout generation x crowd, and now the hip slacker generation y losers. Anyone try to hire one of these morons? A complete waste of time and money.

You can really tell what you are dealing with when they start critiquing you on your knowledge of "green values", or the fact that their eyes are in constant vibration mode from playing video games all night long. You know, a lot of these fools still live at their parents homes?

This is truly a problem for this country. No, the fact that most of these people did not sufficiently stay attentive in gradeschool or highschool explains it. But also, the fact that teachers cannot discipline is another. The same goes with that removed from the parent as well.

We have allowed this country to fall into the hands of the softies.

GOP is all about big government, too
There is no aspect of our lives—none—that today’s "conservatives" concede is off limits to the meddling use of government power either, unfortunately. The GOP majority gave us the prescription drug benefit, McCain-Feingold, Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.

The GOP even has a corollary to remote controlled thermostats -- federal Internet poker legislation, complete with forcing banks to enforce this ludicrous law.

Limited government is no longer a concept that makes no sense to the GOP, either.

Don't waste your vote on more big government this Novemeber. Learn more about liberty. Check out http://www.bobbarr2008.com .

Barr is polling at 6!
Check out today's Zogby Poll, at http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1523 . Looks like the GOP cannot count on the small government conservative vote, huh?

Barr is polling at 6%!

Maybe the party will retool for 2010. Or, maybe they'll continue to kowtow to the big government nanny-staters in the party who want to legislate behavior. I guess we'll see.

.......
----If we're going to deal with the very real problems of global warming and the energy crisis,……..-----

“Paranoid mystic”, is that liberalese for welfare parasite? I find it amusing how the liberal idiots [redundancy] now precede “global warming” with “the very real problem” or “settled science” etc when the only ones peddling this bullsh!t are political hacks who’ll profit from this scam, activists, ecolunatics, anti-capitalists and those who want to receive grants. It’s beyond me how anyone can take these green dimwits seriously when they believe CO2, what we exhale and is critical for plant life, is a contaminant. Tell me stupid, what’s the parts per billion of CO2 in the atmosphere? What evidence whatsoever is there for CO2 being harmful? Also moron, what happened to the at least haf dozen ice ages? Where’d the snow & ice go? Neanderthals driving their SUVs?

As far as the energy crisis it is directly because of you myopic wannabe communist bedwetters. The best thing you and your ilk could do to help is STFU and get out of the way.

Liberals really are the dumbest people on the planet.

----Liberals are *extremely* interested in personal liberty. That's why we're so upset about the FISA bill in front of the Senate right now.-----

But you yawned at the Kelo decision and surely cheered SCOTUS hoping they would bastardize the Constitution further by voting against the 2nd amendment. Intellectual retard.

Who is "we"?
"We can’t afford to just walk away from this fight."

Who do you mean by "we"? Conservatives don't have a dog IN this fight, unless you want to count Mr. 6%

and conservatives on liberty?
lets go down the list of conservatives take on the most important freedoms

1) Right to die with dignity: no euthanasia! you rot in that shell in that nursing home or hospital no ability to chose when to end the story of your life, the very most basic freedom and conservatives stand in way.

2) Womens control over their body: no way! no abortion, restrictions on methods of birth control to those that dont conflict with their wierd primitive ethical ideas, no HPV virus innoculation.

3) freedom of speech: ever more draconian penalties for flashes of nudity or swear words on TV that make the USA a laughing stock in the rest of the developed world that has gotten over its puritanism decades ago. restricting display of any art that challenges their ned flanders reality.

4) economic freedom: oh this is where the conservatives really jump about and wave flags about freedom, however, as soon as what is being bought and sold are things they dont want and find icky, like soft drugs equivalent to alcohol and tobacco but without the traditional stamp of approval, sex, erotica, avant garde anti traditional philosophy etc... they are the first to say Oh no you dont!

some freedom you conservatives support!

Re: Great Satan #16
Personal attacks (aka ad hominems) are the surest sign of poor debate.

Fact is we've got a big problem on our hands and we need to dialogue on some solutions. This article, as I mentioned, moves us backwards not forwards. If you actually read the Kline article, it's an appeal for commonsense, not overbearing legislation.

We need to tone down the hateful rhetoric and fearmongering and gear up for problem solving. We can and will overcome the energy crisis (short term) and the rise in global temperature (long term) with wit, ingenuity, and without sacrificing the pursuit of happiness.

good and bad news
just tax us 100% and send back what they thing we need.

the good news is bottled water is now cheaper than gas.

Concentrating on a benign insult is the surest sign of a thin skinned coward.

Tell me, what is the democrat controlled congress willing to do over the outrageous gas prices other than their foolishness of threatening to tax the oil companies, which will do absolutely zero in adding more oil to the world market.

Interesting
that at least three posters here seem to think that the problem with America is ... Americans.

"the majority of this country no longer values freedom."

"a larger part (of fault for the situation) attributed to an ever dumber and ultra lazy population"

"most citizens do not value freedom"

I know you guys were anti-Democrat, I never would have guessed that you were anti-democracy, too.

David
"..What’s at stake are the very concepts of personal liberty and limits to government power.

We can’t afford to just walk away from this fight. "

Sure bring it on sissy we are waiting LMAO

.....
----that at least three posters here seem to think that the problem with America is ... Americans.-----

The liberal mind is so simple. Yes genius, the problem with America is Americans, more specifically the leftist democrats in congress, the leftist anti-American filth throughout the nation, the leftists communists in academia and the leftist rodents in black robes on the supreme court. The problem with Soviet Russia were the communist Russians just as the problem with Germany were the nazi Germans.

How will the RINO's learn
David Strom and other pundits will try to scare us by saying "Even a mere two or four years of liberal ascendency in Washington policymaking could do immeasurable damage to our economy and our freedoms"
so better to keep the RINO's in office who spend as much as the DEM's. and grow the government faster than anytime in history. Thats hard to swallow.
Jimmy Carter faced a more imposing foe in the USSR. Iran is a threat, but no USSR. GWB has backed up terrorist plans by years. President Reagan did not take decades to pull the USA out of the malaise the country was in.
My vote will probably go to Bob Barr ( i can't believe i just wrote that ). Even if it means Mr.Obama wins. The fact is, the GOP is no longer interested in the same issues as myself. i will not vote for the lesser of two evils. my God, is that really what the political process has become. The USA should weep.

watch it, Great Satan
Your rhetoric is spinning out of control. It's one thing to debate, but to call our supreme court justices "the leftist rodents" is totally inappropriate.

You don't really think of people like that, right? This is a show for the internet bc you feel like no one is looking?

Three most successful liberal
programs are the drug culture (which we could help cure by legalizing everything and letting the druggies fall where they may);

the sexual revolution (50% illegitamcy rates, 54,000,00 fetuses aborted sinve 72, one in five carrying "the herp"--now so prevalent it's a pop phrase and never forget 1,000,000 with HIV/AIDS);

and the corruption of the US pub. ed. system (produced peek SATs in 1972 and now produces a 50% dropout rate for urban minorities);

and AT THIS MOMENT, they want to take over when and where you can put gas in your car, heat/cool your house, or take an airplane on vacation--see HamNation "Obama on Your Shoulder" where he says he'll tell you what you can eat and what you can drive and what temp. you can set your house at).

Al Gore isn't bothered by the carbon footprint he leaves because he buys carbon credits FROM THE COMPANY HE OWNS.

GW if it exists is caused by the sun which is warming the entire solar system. I don't think coal-fired power plants are warming either Saturn or Jupiter. SO, all this blather about fossil fuels is specious and just an excuse for more socialist legislation and more liberal dictatorship.

paranoidmystic
---You don't really think of people like that, right?----

Depends which people. Those like Ruth Vader Ginsberg, Kennedy, Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, Kerry, Gore, Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, Jesse Jackson are just a few of the two legged rodents that come to mind.

I find it ironic that someone who characterizes global warming "as a very real problem" when there is absolutely no proof of it's occurrence and to the contrary, records show a global cooling, would complain about debate. Don't you remember, Algore said the debate is over.

paranoidmystic
--- Your rhetoric is spinning out of control. ---

I'm actually behaving; TH isn't the forum for out of control rhetoric but there are places that are and they're hella fun. I recommend The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler and Ace of Spades.

Thoughts on Your Column
I will admit it! I am one of those disallusioned conservatives your are writing about.

I agree that 4 to 8 years of liberal policy will set the nation back at least a decade, and many of the policies will never be undone. However, I just do not see quality leadership for conservative ideals.

McCain is certainly not a consistent conservative. In fact, I often wonder if the true "dream team" to lead the country isn't OBH, MickyC as his VEEP. Given MickyC's liberal leanings and OBH's recent "shifts" to the center, I really see little difference between most of their individual positions.

Yes, I know. Healthcare, taxes, and judicial appointments are the first line of defense when someone questions MickyD's conservative positions.

That is understandable because even conservatives have "hope". However, as an Arizona resident with the opportunity to observe our Senator's performance throughout his entire political career, I can only say that I really believe very little of what he says. Unfortunately his real positions are never known in advance of his measuring the political tides. More important, I have seen too many times that what he says is not always closely aligned with what he does.

For the next four months, I'll just watch and learn.

It is a dilemma to be sure.

Hee Hee
Presumably Strom is satirizing conservatives here. Presumably the reason that Strom consistently misspells Klein's name is that he didn't actually read the article in question. As someone noted above, Klein's great challenge to American freedom is that the President should recommend people setting their air conditioners 5 degrees higher than they currently do. That is practically like adovcating slavery.

So we have a conservative illustrating either an unconcern with accuracy, or possibly an inability to read basic English. And he is trying to create a panic based on his lack of reading comprehension. And sadly most of his readers probably won't care that he simply failed to understand the article that he found so significant.

Have you ever spent a summer in Texas? Right now it's 11:92 p.m. and its 93 degrees, and it's early July. August is even worse. I already keep my AC at 75. I have installed ridge vents in my roof, and will shortly be installing a Radiant Barrier coating on the attic side of my roof, six more inches of insulation, and hav all my doors, attic leaks, and vents sealed. BTW, my sister in law who is legally blind resides with us. Additionally she has MS, and her neurologist told us the house should be no warmer than 75. Raising our thermostat any more is not an option.

Lon is absolutely right...
That Klein's name is misspelled throughout the column. I take full responsibility for the error, although I did not do the final editing where the error was introduced. I should have caught it before the column went out.

Regarding his other points, they are just silly or inaccurate. Klein is obviously advocating the reduction or elimination of A/C, and to suggest that liberals wouldn't do that ignores the California Energy Board's recent actions. And the Ethanol mandates. And the renewable fuel requirements. And the banning of drilling for oil in much of our untapped resources. And, and, and.

Liberals don't believe that economic liberty is truly liberty at all. They seem to believe liberty involves the right to commit offensive acts on the public dime.

Sure, no more AC
use here in the southeast in summer as soon as there is no more heat used in the northeast in the winter!

kline has not advocated the lessening of the use
of air conditioners, and you are a lier for saying tht he does. what he says is really very easy to understand.. we must cut back on the use of electricity . one way we can do this is by cutting back onthe use of air conditioners.but this is but one of many. . there is a difference between this and what you say he said. but i really dont expect you to undertand or acknowledge it.

a few comments for the posters
Tahssard,
The issues you raise are very interesting and very telling of where you are. You would promote offensive language and visuals in the public sphere however I am sure you are one that also would seek to restrict religious freedom (i.e. student led prayer at a high school football game, any reference to religion in a high school validictorian's speech). Now if you are open to anything should not those freedoms not be restricted either? I really look forward to your response.

Hal,
You claim to be a former military man, have you forgotten the oaths of enlistment that you have taken? You say bring it on, does this mean that you advocate the restrictions of personal freedom? You are fighting against some of the very precepts that you supposedly made an oath even to the pains of death to protect. I do have to admit it really makes me wonder about the veracity of the claims you make.

To all,
With freedom comes responsibility. From what I have seen, liberal ideology would prefer to "save" us from that responsibility by restricting the freedoms thereby avoiding the whole sticky issue of taking ownership of one's actions. Politically correct speech is one aspect of this. Freedom of speech is freedom to be a jerk if someone so desires. That is where personal responsibility most definitely comes in. If I choose to go up to a group of black men and hurl a racial epithet at them well in my humble opinion the beating that I would take would be payment for my actions. Now if I were to say something about me feeling that homosexuality was immoral on a college campus and being penalized by the college for my heartfelt beliefs or religious inclination then you are interfering with my first amendment rights. Freedom of speech means always being at risk of being offended.

Space Cadet
Good line. Freedom of speech always entails the risk of hearing someone say something intended to be offensive. Being offended, however, is a personal choice. Intelligent people don't give enough credence to moonbats to be offended. It would be as sensible as being offended because the rain falls down instead of up.

BAMAddox
Brilliant! We can also ask the Californians to just let nature have its way. Why waste all the water trying to extinguish fires from lightning strikes? It's just nature's way of getting rid of old growth and making way for new. Regarding the next big earth quake in frisco, we can just shrug and chalk it up to nature. No heat in the Northeast, no air-conditioning for the South, break the dams to release the salmon, no more drilling for or using oil, leave the coal alone, and for sure no nuclear power. Ah, the vision of a Democratic paradise is becoming so much clearer. With a healthy dose of self-esteem and a chorus of "We shall overcome." It feels right.

It's McCain's Dream too, Mr. Strom
All of the eventualities you rightly fret over in your column would also follow if McCain should have his way. Remember, he supports the abomination that is "Cap & Trade'. Thus, McCain offers no refuge from this onslaught of government meddling.

tahssard - you're really rich...
Let's see.....
Conservatives don't like euthanasia, abortion, pornography, and drugs. Those are your arguments that say conservatives don't cherish freedom? In your world, things would be pretty much perfect if only we could all agree that those were good things, huh? I think you're serious. Unbelievable.

Wombatty
You nailed it.

The trouble with voting for McAmnesty to curtail liberalism is that he is a liberal too. Or at least simply power-hungry enough to grab onto the global warming hoax. Control energy use & you control the people.

Everything in this column is true. We must vote for the only conservative in the race. His name is Bob Barr.

Yes, Obama will do damage. McAmnesty will do more.

Robert
The Zogby poll is an online SURVEY. It's conducted like a telephone survey, except it's done online. That's very different from an online poll, where people visit a site and vote.

This information is on their website. Was it that hard for you to figure out???? You're not too bright, huh?

----------------------------------------

"Survey Methodology [Zogby Interactive Adults] 6/11/08 thru 6/30/08

Zogby International was conducted an online survey of [46468 adults].

A sampling of Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate. Slight weights were added region, party, age, race, religion, income and gender to more accurately reflect the population. The margin of error is +/- 0.5 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups."

Mr. Strom
Rather than lambast the leftist positions, (these are things we are well aware of), how ‘bout you point out some true conservatives we can support.

Bob Barr has my vote as well.
McCain is merely Democrat lite. This RINO will only do what Obama will do except MAYBE he'll be more decisive when the middle east towel-heads nail us again.

PARANOIDMYSTIC, I have to ask you a few things since you are among the few people I've read who actually believe in global warming in spite of tens of thousands of climate researcher's who proved that it is completely false.

To argue against scientific research is healthy because it gets to the truth, but to go against enormous proof that you are completely wrong indicates blatant denial and suggests delusional thinking.

My questions to you are, and I'm serious:

What do you eat and what do you drink?
Do you know both of your parents?
Did you ever or do you currently have a substance abuse history?
Are you self-supporting?
Have you ever held a regular job?
Do you have a criminal history?
Is truth relative to you?
Have you ever read a history book?

The cognitive map of the liberal is a true mystery. That one would actually reject complete freedom and embrace lying as well as government control of others is an enormous puzzle to me as well. Your kind says you want to help people so please answer the above.

Your handle speaks volumes in regard to evident pathology, but it isn't enough to generate a complete profile of you. Walk your talk here and help me out.

This is crazy
The Republicans are the ones engaging in and defending illegal wiretapping, and this author accuses *liberals* of eroding the distinction between public and private.

Lumberjack7392
You are, of course, right that different people are in different situations and will be able to respond to such a plea differently. That is presumably why contrary to what Strom would have you believe, Klein did not advocate any kind of legislation or coercion in his article.

Where I am is not as hot as Texas. In fact it is rather chilly. Not outside, of course, where it remains hot, but at work where much as Klein notes in his article, the company has chosen to keep it colder here than they likely would in the winter.

I have recently had a couple of occassions in which my children have complained of being overly cold in the summer. That is because they are dressed for summer, and we are inside in places that keep things frigid for whatever reason.

There is plenty of room for reductions in the use of AC. And Klein is right that it would not be a bad thing if we had an administration willing to point that out rather than mocking the issue as Cheney did not too long ago.

MRC says
"kline has not advocated the lessening of the use

It certainly sounds like he's advocating the lessening of airconditioning...and all other electrical conveniences.
Do you ever listen to yourself?

Unfortunately...
Unfortunately, conservatives continue to muddle in the funk they have fallen into. They continue to say “yes” or “maybe”, rather than “no” to Liberals. They have totally and completely lost the consensus of the people. They no longer represent that consensus and the people are angry. The people should voice their concerns at the ballot box. Not by voting for liberals, but by voting them out of office. This should be done not only at the Federal, but State and Local levels as well.

Conservatives in a Funk
I can hardly think of anything more refreshing than to have people in power who are willing to deal with the plethora of real problems facing our country instead of a bunch of single problem conservatives focusing on irrelevant issues.

Stop Blaming the Victim
This article is nothing more than a warmed over, rehashed version of the lesser-of-two-evils argument Republicans throw out to shore up their demoralized base. American lives already are severely controlled and exploited by government, without the help of liberals. The average American has to work through May just to finance taxes, and that doesn’t count state, county and city fees and taxes imposed to conform with federal mandates. All aspects of daily life, from running a business and driving a car, through education, health care and employment, are tightly controlled by government edict. The Republican Bush administration increased spending for government and pushed for further federalizing of education and employment, not to mention its strong support of illegal immigration and mandated benefits for them. Republicans have done nothing to reduce the load of bureaucracy and demands created by government. Instead, Republican leaders and elites leech off the taxpayer to fund their excesses and arcane laws. If they have a philosophy of individual freedom and less government, it has not been in effect over the last eight years.

Lesser of Two Evils....Fool me once.
Just listend to John McCain's town hall and now even I'm ready to vote for BHO. Just kidding.

MCCain is just pitifully apppalling and doesn't appear to represent anything that I stand for. When he makes a rare statement that I agree with, it's so apparant that he's repeating talking points that have nothing to do with what he really believes. He just disgusting.

I don't care if BHO threateneed a 100% tax rate, I still will not vote for McCain.

So all you die hard GOPer's can take your guilt trips and look in the mirror. You are the problem. Small government, liberty minded people are not welcome in the GOP. If we were John McCain would not be the nominee. You got him and you can go down with the ship. Please all of you "you have to vote the lesser of two evils" get on board before it sinks.

In case anyone was wondering...
"There is no aspect of our lives—none—that today’s liberals concede is off limits to the meddling use of government power."

In short, liberals are fascists.

Oh, and for the morons who claim that conservatives are equally looking to "meddle in every aspect of our lives" based upon their opposition to abortion, give me a freakin' break! While one can debate whether unborn lives ought be valued as highly as those of the born, one cannot RATIONALLY argue that it is anything EXCEPT fascism to dictate what we are and are not allowed to eat or whether we ought be allowed to use air conditioning.

Isn't it amusing, though, how, to a liberal, ramming a rusty pair of siscors into a baby's head constitutes a "choice", but sending your child to a Catholic school constitutes "ruining the education for all poor children"?

Speaking of nutballs
thanks for posting High?Gene

just a reminder
You oughtta read the real article, because it doesn't resemble this smear job.

The author proposes some good old fashioned conservative personal responsibility, not legislation.

It's a perverse fantasy to think that liberals are fascists opposed to freedom. Just the opposite of the truth.

McCain's Blazing Saddles
McCain and the Republicans remind me of the scene in Blazing Saddles where Clevon Little points the pistol at himself and gets the town to give him what he wants.

If both B. Hussien Obama and McCain will both drive this country off of the cliff, then why should I vote for the one driving 55 mph rather than the one driving 120?

Global Warming, Illegal Immigration, Gang of 14, Aleto wearing his conservatism on his sleeve, Tax cuts for the rich, how many insults must I endure? This is not the views of a limited government Constitutionalist.

After Bob Dole, I promised myself that I would not vote for a liberal Republican again. I will vote for Bob Barr. The only way that could change is if McCain is not nominated.

Yeah right. It took the SCOTUS to tell libs that the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right, and you cannot ban individuals from ownung a weapon. You are offended by what some says, set up speech codes. You don't like what Talk Radio host are saying, reinstate the (Un)Fairness Doctrine. You don't like military recruiters, restrict the location where their offices are set up, and where they can go. You don't like religious people protesting Gay Pride Parades have them arrested for violating hate crimes laws. You don't like conservatives speaking on college campuses have the school withdraw the invitation, cancel the venue or require outrageous security deposits not required for lib speakers or just assault the speakers. And these are just a sample of libs opposition to freedom.

Thanks JD's Son
I wonder how many civil wars and/or revolutions a nation can survive. We may find out in the next few years. True Americans and lovers of the Republic can meet in Charleston once again. The corner of Meeting Street and Broad.

This is just a request
but I would very much appreciate it if, when responding to a previous post, everyone would present the poster's remarks first with quotation marks.

I see this a lot on TH. People quote a previous poster but don't use quotation marks. If we have not read the previous poster's remarks, we think we are reading the opinion of the one responding to the previous poster. It gets very confusing.

Even if you start by saying - John Doe Says etc., etc. It would be easier to read if it were formatted as - John Doe Says "etc., etc." Please use quotation marks when quoting someone else so everyone will know that what they are reading was said by someone else earlier.

Thanks to all.
