Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Imagine this: in 1776, the Founders of our country concluded that the most important means of communication—at that time the printing press—was so vital to the economic and political development of America that they decided to issue, along with the Declaration of Independence, a national office of printing presses that would supplant the existing free presses of the day.

Any free rational individual at the time would have risen up in opposition, justifiably accusing the founders of hypocrisy, and of setting up the conditions of tyranny by using a government-subsidized press to squeeze out the free and open media of the day. The revolutionaries would have first turned on their leaders, before taking on the British Redcoats.

Well, what was impossible then is becoming increasingly the reality today.

Not possible, you say, in America? Think again.

Municipalities across the country are setting up municipal wireless, cable, internet, and telephone systems to directly compete with those operating in the free market today. Already most cities “franchise” cable companies to provide exclusive cable access to homes within their jurisdictions, and were it not for off-air and satellite companies there would be no competition for your cable TV already. And in exchange for those franchises, municipalities routinely demand concessions such as cable-access channels, broadcast of municipal TV shows, and even sometimes outright bribes such as upgrading city streetscapes or other such nonsense.

In short, governments already have too much control over the means of communication.

The new trend, though, is to get into the business of communications services themselves. Several cities have set up municipal wireless systems—which have been largely huge financial failures—and now some are getting into the “fiber optic to the home” business.

These government-run, government-owned, or even government-licensed services are not just financially stupid, but in fact a direct threat to our liberties. Just as government-owned, government-subsidized, or government chartered newspapers would have appalled our founding fathers, the idea of giving over control to the government the most important means of communication in present-day America—telephones and internet access especially—should be repugnant to all who cherish liberty.

Imagine your email residing on government-controlled servers. Your purchase records, your phone records, your television watching habits—in fact, pretty much the most private and intimate information about you—being held directly in the hands of your local government officials.

That is what is being proposed, whatever the advocates of “reduced price” (government subsidized) telephone, television, and internet access say they want to provide. In exchange for a bribe (using YOUR tax dollars), they will soon be asking you to surrender your privacy and eventually your liberty to their tender mercies.

Does anyone really believe that these systems could possibly remain private in such a situation?

In today’s competitive marketplace, communications providers have an enormous incentive to protect your privacy. If they don’t, you have options. Cable competes against DSL, Satellite competes with both, and as the economics change to a more favorable environment perhaps wireless providers will move into the market as it matures and promises profitability.

A government-run system, though, has the ability to dip into tax dollars to hide the actual cost to consumers. You will wind up paying for the system in your property or income taxes, but the subsidized rate will make private providers poor competitors with the developing government monopoly. They will become bit players—or perhaps cut a deal with the government just to maintain their businesses.

In many ways this seemingly benign trend—to “move municipal infrastructure into the 21st Century” some would say—could turn out to be one of the greatest threats to our liberty in our times.

Liberty is rarely lost in one fell swoop. It erodes little by little, bit by bit, as we cede control of ever increasing parts of our lives to government control and regulation. This trend, however benign it appears to most observers, is perhaps the greatest long-term threat to our liberty today. Controlling the communications high-ground—bandwidth to consumers—should never be put into the hands of government officials, or any monopoly for that matter.

Government officials are asking you to make a false and dangerous trade: supposedly “lower” prices (actually subsidized by your tax dollars) in exchange for your very freedom. It’s a fool’s bargain.

Only the free market—which will directly respond to consumers’ desire for privacy, offers any hope at all for keeping the communications market both free and private. Consumers will flee service providers who won’t maintain their privacy—that is, unless they no longer have the option when government controls the market.

So when your city or county suggests to you that they get into the communications business—to save you money, of course—you should give them one answer and one answer only: hell no!

True I know they don’t store like your computer does, except outlook is and was stored on brighthouse until I open it, and then it's on my computer And they still need a warrant to look at them. If locals take over would it not be the same for outlook? And i hear you about small cities i lived in one that when a cable co got its franchise, we had like 22 channels. It was that or over the air waves.

But Doc
I am thinking you don't quite grasp internet access. Providing access does not mean they have a copy of your stuff on their server.

Now the fed gov doesn't need to provide internet access to be able to read your emails or know what you have been surfing. In fact, it is not that difficult for anyone to see what others are doing on the internet. The general rule of thumb is not to say anything on the phone you wouldn't want to say publicly and never put anything in writing that you wouldn't want the world to know (especially on the net).

As for stifiling competition... there is generally little or no competition in smaller cities throughout the country. Where I live, high speed access has only been around for about 2 years and dsl has not been a reasonable alternative around here so far. At one of my businesses, I tried for three years to get the cable company to come a half mile down the road to me and they refused. Our best choice is still dial up.

Wireless for entire cities will be the choice of the near future...just wait.

nomodo
No thanks, indpls already has had a franchise fee and ALL it did was stifle competition! Thank God the state senate finally overrode all locals and opened up the market. Besides, like the man said, i don't need ANYTHING sitting around on local government servers.

Duck
Don't know if that was Ava Gardner's last movie or not. I also was cheering Burt Lancaster to win. I didn't want the Communist to Win or our Politicians to violate our Freedoms in the name of peace. Peace is achieved only thru strength and the will to use it or any means necessary to win. All history demonstrates this as a FACT OF NATURE, even with Animals.

Recently I saw a blog from a Military man, stating that if Hillary won that the Military wouldn't support her. It didn't mention anything else or say any specifics though. And I hoped and prayed that the Military wouldn't follow Hillary and then I realized that the Military won't fight True Americans inside America, but that True Americans (Citizens Militia) might have to get our Military to fight along ourselves. I have watched the deterioration of this Country for too long and have stood and watched the Silent Majority completely ignore the issues attacking our Freedoms and the take over of our Courts, MSM, Academia, and Congress by the Socialist Communists. The Soldiers of our Military want to protect our Freedoms and take back America, so I am not worried about a Military Dictatorship, which is not capable without the support of the soldiers in the field.

already there
"Imagine your email residing on government-controlled servers. Your purchase records, your phone records, your television watching habits—in fact, pretty much the most private and intimate information about you—being held directly in the hands of your local government officials"
Do you think this is not already happening!!
Just replace "local Government" with "Fed government"

Hysteria continued
3. Comparison to state and local control of schools would have been a better example to make his point. After all, many here can agree that the public school system (ranked 7th in industrialized nations) has been a failure and could arguably be seen as mind control of young skulls full of mush. Yet the comparison would fail here also because internet ACCESS is different from content control (besides public education is federally controlled to a great extent).

The worst a local government could do is withhold it's services when it comes to internet access. Sure that would be uncomfortable, but there is always dial up when push comes to shove.

4. The technology of a citywide wireless internet is here now. The individual cost would be minimal and the benefits would be huge. Time Warner Cable doesn't want such a thing even if it controlled the internet contract because it cannot justify a $40-60/ month fee it currently imposes. Also think about the freedom we would experience having wireless in our parks, hotels, resteraunts, and even in the backyard. How about if enough cities had wireless citywide...we could have internet access while driving - think gps, emergency services.

5. Counties like Cook County (Chicago) in Ill. are experimenting with citywide wireless internet access for emergency services as well as invididual use. The local cost savings for emergency use as well as improvements in communication is mind bending. Think about the communications requirements during 9/11 and how it would have been different if there was citywide wireless.

The technology is there... lets stop the hysteria and start pushing for LOCAL control of wireless access.

Silly Hysteria
1. There is a difference between the local and federal government. At the founding of our country, the debate was over state vs. federal control - after all, some control in necessary or there would be anarchy. Local control ensures greater individual control over its government.

The fear was that our federal government would grow out of control and take away the local wishes of the people. To have the federal government get involved in setting up and maintianing local infrasturcture (like water, gas, electric, internet) would warrant such an article. This is not the case here.

2. Local municipality control over internet ACCESS is a wise choice considering the infrastructure and the potential cost savings through distribution of expenses. David's comparison to the printing press is faulty at best. Had he compared it to local control of our water supply (think infrastructure and distribution needs) his premise would have fallen completely apart - cause local control of such a vital resource works. Even if an evil local government wanted to control it's people in some diabolical plot, it couldn't withhold water because it would have to answer to state and federal powers.

Exceptionally insightful
Once information is in government's possession, it's impossible to keep politicians and bureaucrats from exploiting it in service to their own agendas -- and those agendas always have power over others at the top.

The public schools are as devastating to this country as they are not because they're compulsory -- they aren't -- but because they're coercively funded. The cost of paying for the public schools, whether one uses them or not, has made superior private alternatives unaffordable for the overwhelming majority of American parents. If we permit government-funded Internet access to proliferate, you can bet your last dollar that the same will happen to private access providers.

Indeed, in that case it might BE your last dollar.

Plus
Plus there was an article that the ID chips that we put into our pets attract radio waves to them and which causes cancer which is why they are not expanding such ID chips to humans with Alzeimer's. As wireless grows and covers everything the waves will increase. Maybe the nutty lady who came up to me and told me that my metal hair barrette and metal eyeglass frames was bad for my health, maybe she was not as wacky as I thought she was.

Founders
The Country's Founders were not all that pure. When they consciously declared that, the first ten amendments are the 'Bill of Rights’, they knew full well it was necessary because of all the rights being removed. If not, why would a bill of government granted rights be necessary? It has not changed since. All 'rights' are illus ional.

ONLY VITAL ISSUEs for 08 ARE
THE “IRAQ” war is Not the most vital issue it is only a blip in a period of time:

The MOST VITAL ARE:

? 1. THE PORNIFICATION of America by Hollywood, the democrats, the media, and Mothers in America who sell their, forkiddy porn and sex then train their daughters to be Britney

? CORRUPT judicial and legal system from top to bottom:

? THE corrupt Media, who lie, fabricate, exaggerate, distort, invent, engineer, what they call the Facts in all things and their perpetual slander, slime and vicious hate campaign against decency and success.

? ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: ALL aspects of the issue:

? Illegal drugs,

? our entire corrupt and dysfunctional educational system from bottom to top: teachersteaching, hate America, hate success and religion, “how to” in the back of the bus and then molest the kids and never get fired:

? THAT America is NOW the LAND of ramped obesity, drunks, brain fried druggies who expect government to stop them from inhaling junk food while watching a tube, using and boozing:

All of the OTHER single ‘issues” have already been beaten to death and distorted and really are irrelevant because NOTHING EVER CHANGES AND WILL NEVER CHANGE ON Abortion, Gun Control, Health Care, the POOR, gay marriage, taxes, and bogus global warming babble and bogus alternative energy babble:

RON Paul is UN American
RON Paul needs to go run for President of
some terrorist nation

he blames the USA for every single problem
in the world for the past 100 years

SOUNDS like a Terrorist to me:

Hillary will finish off remaining rights

HILLARY's health care plan MANDATES
that EVERY ONE MUST buy insurance

that includes folks like Bill GATES and those who
self insure so that they do NOT have to pay for

abortions
sex change operations
brain fried druggies
drunks
Aids
high risk conduct heath problems

Dictator Communist HIllary will alsodictate
who and what we can listen to on the radio

Ron Paul - NOT
When Ron Paul says that the U.S. can send our military anywhere, anytime, to do anything we want done, THEN I might CONSIDER supporting him.

So long as he keeps pretending that other nations are equal to the U.S., I'd vote for a dead jackrabbit first.

rjas2330
Why aren't our candidates speaking out? Bush supports socialized medicine and so do 2 of the top 3 Republican candidates.

rjas2330
Your statement, "Why aren't our candidates out there pounding the facts about socialized health care into the constituents' heads?"

The present GOP is leaderless. This position is usually represented by the POTUS while his administration is in office and George Bush now can't accomplish anything with the Constituents; He has lost their trust. As long as George Bush allows Iran to kill our Soldiers and arm the Terrorist in Iraq & Lebanon without any penalties, this war will be drawn out and the American People have arguably already lost faith, allowing the Socialist Commies a leg up on withdrawing our forces and complete genocide in Iraq - which will cost America Lives more dearly in the future. Has everyone already forgotten the economic disaster that took place immediately after 9-11. Unless we can fire up not only Conservatives, but Independents, and Conservative Democrats that this Tax & Spend Policies and this Universal Health Care will destroy America as we know it. The Democrats Agenda is a tried Loser in Europe and elsewhere around the Globe and will destroy America Economically. Socialism is not and never will be the answer, and as soon as Americans wake up and smell the roses, the Democrats will be removed from Power and then if we stay in touch with the GOP Congress and have a President who will listen, we can reverse this Socialistic Direction and take back America form the MSM, our Courts, Academia, and our Congress. If not, pray the Military saves ourselves from Congress and Socialism - Remember "Seven Days in May". Except this time the Military will be the GOOD GUYS.

This is the most important issue of our
time. If the free market does not control the telecommunication fabric of our society, the groundwork is set for the slow erosion of our liberty.

Controlling the medium is vital to the interests of the welfare / warfare state control. We must fight to support free market choice on all fronts, the government should be interfering with communication networks (video, data, voice, etc)

One more thing...
Ron Paul 2008

ONe monopoly is no better than the other
Guess what happens when government and business get together - a bunch of monopolies.

Get the government out of our lives, get the monopolies out of congressional coffers, and let free competition and freedom ring.

Always a bad idea.
It is never a good idea to give away your freedoms to the government, because the government is so much more than simply what party is currently in power.

This is only a small battle...
in the overall war against our liberty. The mother of all battles comes up next year when the government tries to take over the health care industry "for our own good".

With control of the health apparatus, it is a very small step to total socialist control of the country. This is a titanic battle and we are setting complacently while once again the libs set the agenda. Why aren't our candidates out there pounding the facts about socialized health care into the constituents' heads?

Dave Stone
Sarcasm? Right?
Because as you know NOTHING IS FOR FREE!

At least some of us can see the evil
I'm glad there are people out there at least getting a little bit of the word out on the horror of this kind of thing.

And I'm also relieved that many of you posting have realized that both parties are the bad guys here. They're both after as much power as they can get. The Dems want us to go to Communism straight away, while the Republicans want to take their time bringing us to it.

We're in a lot of trouble, folks. I believe the United States will collapse in the near future. Either that or we're just going to turn into a fully Socialized country, with two political parties that are really the same except for a few small differences.

I'm disgusted.

Yep; the government
owns the air and as soon as they figure out how to measure it they will begin to tax breathing. All of the libtards scream about the Patriot Act while the government takes more and more every day.

Jimmy D
You're right. It's both parties. They're in it together. It should come as no shock that no other party can break through in any significant manner.

The one that solidified it for me on the Repub side was the backing by some in the party for this nonsensical National ID that will make none of us safer.

you're right
You're right, Mr. Strom. Our liberties are disappearing at an alarming rate, and government having a large say in communications is scary. The next logical step will be more governmentally-backed programs on the airwaves, higher prices and less media freedom of choice. Freedom of the press in this day and age should apply equally to the airwaves.

Can't Trust Government
Can't Trust Democrats or Republicans. The Demonrats are attacking our 1st & 2nd Admendment rights, and both are violating our Sovereignty with Illegal Immigration issues. The Demonrats are attempting to replace the Commander in Chief via Congress, violating separation of Powers, and the Logan Act in who represents America in Discussions with Foreign Governments. The Republicans have been taken over by RINO's and the Demonrats have been taken over by Socialist Commies. Our Forefathers fought, bled, and died fighting against Socialism & Communism to provide America with Freedom & Liberty and now Congress, especially the Demonrats are moving us towards Socialism and eventual Enslavement and the People can't even recognize the facts in front of their face. How could anyone consider Hillary with her record and with what is already known about her as Presidential Material is beyond belief. Maybe our Military can save us if Hillary is elected. Remember "Seven Days in May", however this time the Military will be the Good Guys and our present Government the bad guys. Maybe, we be better off starting all over, but not after we eliminate the Socialist Commies who have taken over our Courts, Academia, the MSM, and Congress.

My friends say I'm crazy,
but Mr. Strom, you are 100% dead on. Anyone know why the GOVT decided that the airwaves are "publicly" owned? You guessed it.....because they knew that had to figure out a way to regulate so let the public THINK they own the airwaves. Hogwash! They did it because they couldn't control the newspapers. The Constitution took care of that. Unfortunately, the founders couldn't have fathomed electronic media.

They keep chipping away and we take the bait like a big 'ol large mouth bass!
