Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

With apologies to Dion and his now 40-year-old song - Abraham, Martin, and John - I see the ghosts of three past presidents standing slightly off stage as the nation watches the approach of inauguration day.

The ancient Israelites tended to name-drop a patriarchal hat trick when they wanted their rhetoric to stick.  Crying out about, “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” was enough to speak with authority.  For a politician these days, especially the highly successful one who will have to settle on seeing the White House from his Hay-Adams Hotel room window before actually moving in, there is no better political triumvirate to invoke than the really big three: Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy.

President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration will certainly be one to remember.  Anticipation alone exceeds anything in recent memory.  The convergence of historic imagery and the fact that so many challenges await our 44th president, make this transition something that rivals only a few such moments from our nation’s past.

The inaugural prayer has become a source of controversy, and now the oath itself – at least the suffix “so help me God” – is under fire.  I am sure Mr. Obama hopes what he has to say in his maiden address as our new president will be so resounding that any other pre-inaugural firestorm will fade into distant memory like that burning space heater on the platform in January 1961.

From the start, the Obama campaign dispensed with any pretense of subtlety as it sought to conjure up and identify with images of past presidential greatness.  He announced his candidacy surrounded by all things Lincoln, solidified political support at a key primary point by tapping into the still apparently potent power of Camelot, and raced to the November finish line sounding a lot like Mr. New Deal.

His cabinet complete, his team now in place, and his much deserved (and no doubt needed) Hawaiian vacation over, the next event on the calendar is the inauguration itself.  And all pre-inaugural controversies notwithstanding, central to that event will be the speech.  The new man from Illinois has already demonstrated the ability to come through during big speeches – but this one is the granddaddy of them all.

No doubt he has been reading up for a long time on the inaugural addresses of his ghostly trio.  But will he be able to deliver something that will rise to the standards they set?

When John Kennedy was working on his inaugural address, he charged speechwriter Theodore Sorenson with studying Lincoln’s Gettysburg address.  JFK was very conscious of history.  When he died, his widow commissioned a quick review of our 16th president’s funeral to use as a working model for her assassinated husband’s sad and somber farewell.

Of course, Franklin Roosevelt’s 1933 address is probably the most famous – largely because he entered office just as the nation’s economic outlook was at its bleakest.  One thing Mr. Obama needs to remember though, if finding inspiration from FDR, is that when the 32nd president took office things were much worse than they are today.

Those who advocate a New Deal-like approach to the current economic situation would do well to read up on their history.  If there is any parallel to what has happened recently and the events of The Great Depression, what should be remembered is that we are only a few months in, following a market tumble.

In Great Depression terms this is 1930 – not 1933.  In January of 1930, the market had rebounded and there was little indication that things were going to get much worse.  In fact, a case can be made that it was the actions Herbert Hoover and the Congress took in 1930 – things like the Smoot-Harley Act (protectionism), raising taxes, and attempts by the government to manage the economy – that led to a continued downward spiral.  Add to all of this the fact that more than half the nation entered a period of sustained drought that year (timing is everything), and we had the makings of what became a long national perfect storm.

Then FDR came to town and kicked it up a notch.  Thus began a frenetic period when the “best minds” made things up as they went along, content that they simply knew better because they were running things.

I once heard it said that a fanatic is someone who, when faced with the clear failure of a plan of action, determines to work harder and redouble the efforts.

Reading the entire speech Mr. Roosevelt gave on March 4, 1933 – beyond the “fear itself” stuff - is, in fact, quite chilling.  In true populist fashion, the new president railed at the enemies that would become his usual suspects for more than a decade: business leaders and those he called “money-changers.”  He used his words as a scourge to drive the culprits out of town:

“The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization.  We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths.  The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit.”

He called on the nation to fix the “overbalance of population in our industrial centers,” suggesting migratory “redistribution.”   Pack your bags and go west, or south, young man.  Roosevelt talked of extensive “national planning” and unprecedented governmental “supervision” of major sectors of the economy (and the country itself).

And Franklin Roosevelt threatened that if the Congress did not bend to his will on these things, he would seek “broad Executive power to wage war against the emergency, as great as the power that would be given to me if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe.”

Ray Moley was one of the men tasked with helping FDR craft the speech, and in his handwritten notes the word “dictator” appears (though without any elaboration).  Possibly this was bounced around as a word fitting for that whole “broad Executive power” idea.

It is known that many on the left in those days saw virtue in the “strong man” approach to leadership.  A movie (funded by William Randolph Hearst) was produced at the time called Gabriel Over the White House, starring Walter Huston, and extolling the virtues of “benevolent” despotism.

FDR loved the movie – even offering some suggestions about the script.

Mr. Obama would be wise to put the FDR speech away, however – there is not much there that really applies to current reality.  At least, let’s hope not.

That leaves us with the ghost of Old Honest Abe.  Like Mr. Obama, he came to the presidency with a somewhat unimpressive resume.  But he also knew a thing or two about speech making.  His address at New York’s Cooper Union in February of 1860 paved the way for the Republican nomination.   Before that he had gained fame and a reputation for effective rhetorical argument during his legendary debates with Stephen Douglas.

We think of Lincoln these days as a great communicator (a traits most of our more effective presidents have in common).  His address at Gettysburg is still studied.  His Second Inaugural was a classic with lines like “with malice toward none and charity for all.”

But can anyone quote a line from Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural?

He put in a plug for the postal service: “The mails, unless repelled, will continue to be furnished in all parts of the Union.”  Inspiring stuff.

Regarding slavery he “boldly” said: “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.”  He was, as Winston Churchill once described a political foe, “resolute to be irresolute.”

He, of course, did elaborate on the Constitutional idea “to form a more perfect union,” probably the most memorable portion of the speech.  But beyond that, the fact is that Lincoln’s first inaugural was a bomb.  What he had to say was important – and he spoke against the backdrop of perilous times.  As a speech, however, it was not memorable and no one studies it much these days.  It was too long – more than 3,600 words and delivered in about 45 minutes.  And he tried to cover too many bases; a big mistake in inaugural addresses.

There is a reason why JFK had Ted Sorenson study the Gettysburg Address, not Lincoln’s first inaugural.  The speech at the cemetery in 1863 was a mere 278 words long.  Kennedy’s inaugural was 1,364 words long and delivered in slightly under 14 minutes.

FDR flirted with long-windedness – his 1933 address came in at about 1,900 words.  But, his tag line, the one that is remembered, was right at the beginning.  It was all down hill from there.

John F. Kennedy knew, like Abraham Lincoln grew to understand throughout his presidency, that brevity was the soul of wit.  When a speech is shorter, a great line even toward the end will resonate – as did the “ask not” part.

So, before this column becomes ironic, let me simply suggest that President-Elect Obama follow sage advice ministerial students and seminarians have heard for years as they study how to preach: “Stand Up – Speak Up – Shut Up.”

Or in the great African-American pulpit tradition: “Start Low – Go Slow – Rise Higher – Catch Fire – Retire.”

OK – one more and I promise I am done.  An old – and somewhat cheesy - “preacher joke” has the clergyman’s wife whispering in his ear as he goes to the pulpit “K.I.S.S.”  This stands for “Keep It Short, Stupid.”

On January 20th, I will keep an eye on Michelle.

Inauguration Let Down
With Warren's invitation causing problems with the homosexual marriage proponent groups, and the hype of the media about the inauguration becoming a sappy story - Obama's speech will fail to meet the expectations of the viewers. Already, people who hoped for 'change' have seen nothing except skin-deep change. The other half who are still hoping for 'change' are realizing that 'on the job training' will take a little longer than anticipated. It's true there is pride in having an african-american (half) being inaugurated as president, it's also true that with all the hype, there is nowhere else to go but down. The predictions are - Blogo scandle will include Obama
- Rezko's final trial will include Obama
- Russia's aggression will highlight Obama's weakness in foreign policy as he stumbles to address Russia's Nuclear plants' joint ventures with Iran, N. Korea, Venezuela, and China.
- Gaza's ground war with Israel will weaken Obama's perception as a 'uniter' because neither his hama's favored approach nor his silence will be viewed as leadership in time of an international crisis.
- Pakistan and India are on the brick of war and Obama has not yet made a statement or given any indication he has a clue since he offered to send troops to find bin ladin. His problems are bigger than finding bin ladin in this region.
- Iran's nuclear programs are scheduled to be completed by summer 2009 and Russia the collaborator has veto power in the UN Security Council....mmmmmm.....
- Gitmo prisoner's (I mean freedom fighters) are waiting their turn on the Obama 'favor' list by being offered reparations and jobs in our weakening economy because no country will take them.
- And of course, Universal Health Care will be implemented as promised using borrowed money from China (the other collaborator in the nuclear programs in Iran).
Does anyone think 'yes he can'?

IF INDEED
If indeed, there are Presidential ghosts on the sidelines as barry is sworn in, they'll be singing, we're "Rollin, Rollin, Rollin".

OBAMA'S ELUSIVE KENNEDY MOMENT
Till now Obama has been a man in search of a Kennedy moment in his speeches a single stirring phrase that would stick in our minds and long be remembered. But alas, Obama has been unable to find it. My guess is that Obama's inaugural address will be no different from his previous failures and that the nation will have to endure another forgettable speech delivered by an unexceptional man with the pretense to greatness.

Crash and BOOM
Oct 24,1929...Crash..the beginning

The crash that caused this nation to flounder like a salmon on land also began the sorry state of affairs we have now. Pretty broad statement, I know however....

A short time before the crash Hoover was telling everyone the economy was fundamentally sound (Remember Frank and Dodd saying the same thing)
Unemployment skyrocketed, banks failed, automakers shut down because no one could afford new cars.
Unemployed started jumping trains to look for work elsewhere Shantytowns were named "Hoovervilles" and we got Smoot-Hawley, raising tarrifs..Hoovers worst mistake.

FDR wins and pledged to the country a NEW DEAL (raw deal, are better
words)substitute.Hope/change)

FDR called Hoover a big spender (laughable charges in reflection)

FDR in his first 100 days passed a cornucopia of Laws. 15 to be exact, so fast congress hadn't completely read them but signed them anyway (some were later reversed as unconstitutional)
The Emergency Banking Act,The National Industrial Recovery Act,The Civilian Conservation Corp, Emergency Relief,Agricultural Adjustment Act, Emergency Farm Mortgage,Tennessee Valley Authority, Truth In Securities,Homeowners Loan Corp,Glass-Stegall Banking Act and Farm Credit Act....look at what's going on today...didn't work then

He gave us his "brain trust" He took us off the gold standard. He had asked for and received broad executive power,
Thus began his alphabet soup (hobo stew) of agencies. (Which we're paying for today.)
The SEC...
The FCC...
the WPA ...
The PWA...public works..

Then the minority congress (GOP) couldn't do squat to prevent it...
Well folks..here we go again..Pie in the sky promises but a deep plunge as the new majority grows government as the socialist elect has promised.
Now for the follow up...
PEBO's philosophy in a nutshell

Freedom Is Not Free
Perhaps Obama should reduce his inaugural speech to a rap song. Now that would be more memorable and more appropriate. Up to now his speeches about "change" have been meaningless and insipid--"just words."

It would be appreciated if the President-elect focused on hard work, American freedoms, and individual responsibility, especially in respect to the broken families not only in the black community but in the white as well.

But when he talks about the state ministering to our needs grab your wallet and remember TANSTAAL--There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

Does anyone take him seriously?
Does anyone take BHO seriously? I mean, I may have been born at night but it wasn't last night.

A never-stops-talking lawyer with very little experience but with huge amounts of money, some illegally recieved from foreigners no doubt, and with 24/7 press/media support, wins our American Idol / Dancing With The Stars election and I'm supposed to be impressed?

To be frank, it's laughable.

Why is this election so historic?
Is Barry's supposed race what makes this election so historic?

Barry has no race. He's not black, he's not white, he's bi-racial.

I think this election is historic because we've never elected such an inexperienced mouth-piece like Barry. We've never before elected such an extreme leftist, with so many bizarre associations in Chicagoland, like Barry before.

The Magic Negro is the biggest empty suit we've yet had in the White House. But with a sympathetic press and academia, I have no doubt Barry will go down in history as the greatest American who has ever lived. No doubt.

Reading Suggestion
There is an interesting article about Obama's attitude toward the media and his "transparency" in government. It is entitled "Guess Who Doesn't Like the Press?" and it is in the Dec. 29th issue of the Weekly Standard. Obama's refusal to answer direct questions and his non-answers are laughable. He can't comment on the stimulus package until his financial team gets back to him with a recommendation. Who's running who? Maybe the media will finally get tired of being stiffed and try to do their job. This should be fun to watch. The chorus turns.

"I, Barack Hussein Zero, do solemnly..."
'Empty suit' is right. The man has proved nothing other than the facts that he can deliver a speech pretty effectively, and that he can deliver an electoral victory against a very weak opponent...the only reason the election was "close" is because of all the voters that were unsure about Mr. Zero, and went with the ol' man of the sea, instead, even though they knew he would lose. He is a fairly crafty politician, having been molded in the smelting pot of Chicago politics...that's nothing to put on one's resume, however.
"Historic election," I suppose, because he is half-black, half-white, and thereby racially represents the diversity that is America. 'Too bad he couldnb't have had an Hispanic uncle in there somewhere, or an Asian aunt...'what a storybook election THAT would have made.
When it's all said and done, he IS going to be the president. 'May his hand be steady and his judgment sound, because, like it or not, everything is riding on his success or failure.

Re: What a Joke!!!
Look, this entire election along with this clown from Ill. and all of his cronies is the most laughable event I have ever witnessed in my 50+ yrs living in this country!!! What a travisty of the entire process!! This guy along with his cronies from the most corrupt area of the country will try to run this country from the center?? That my friends is a HaHa!! He can't and he will not even attempt to do so, because he has a congress that is full of the leftist socialists that are drueling at the bit to get their agendas passed, oh no, Mr. Obamarxists has got to keep the slobbering leftists like Pelslobby,Dupe,Frump, and Weird passified, yesiree, this will be a four years of total stuffed shirt!!!

The bar isn't very high
Given the medias love for BHO. The fact that they, in regards to BHO, did nothing in regards to the proper vetting of a Presidential candidate, and that some have already stated that they'll go out of their way to paint the BHO Presidency is a good light, there seems to be a very low bar for "greatness" in the historic content of the BHO administration.
The real question is, exactly how many days after Barry is sworn in will we hear from the media that Barry had NO idea the scope of the economic or foreign policy problems, that were obviously hidden by the evil Bush administration.

Ads for a New Generation
If you bothered to watch the infomercials for the messiah-elect, while he was merely a candidate, you might see how things are gonna play. Now that he's about to take his seat, if he's smart, he'll cut it short; if not, he'll sound more like Fidel or Papa Joe. The excited masses will become bored. One day, they may be bussed, en masse, to schools and auditoriums to hear the Emperor speak - for hours and hours.

I suspect that Obamessiah will offer a counterpoint to the Multi-level Marketer, AKA Rick Warren, and also have Congressman Priapus from Massachussetts speak what's left of his mind: Obama's idead of a big tent includes both, and both of these guys have tents of their own, so-to-speak. He'll try to fold them into his own Big Tent.

We're a perpetually divided nation, and we just had a "Uniter" who did a fair job of crossing the aisle (aid to Africa vis-a-vis AIDS etc.) and other non-conservative intitiatives, and this new guy...will end up mad as Caligula - when he finds out that his cult-of-personality won't solve actual problems.

Long speech, short one, it doesn't really matter: like Caligula, we'll have 2 years of relatively benign leadership, followed by...

Abraham, Franklin and John
I agree concerning the similarities between Lincoln and Obama: 1) Neither had any appreciable executive experience coming into the White House; 2) Neither has/had any appreciable respect for our Constitution (of course, Dubya had none for his entire second term); Both are/were from Illinois, perhaps the most politically corrupt state in the nation (yes, we ARE known by the company we keep!).

Not Much in Common with A. Lincoln
Lincoln took over having to fully face an inurgency against which his androgynous predecessor did ZERO to prepare. The Great Unvetted One is inheritng a solid antiterrorism aparatus - not perfect, but certainly through its worst days. So stop feeling sorry for him. He is getting success handed to him on a platinum plate. It's not easy to see that through the gloom the MSM is planting for him.

Obama's New Deal . . . . .
I find it rather nauseating that Obama is continuously being compared to Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy. Before making such comparisons PEBO needs to achieve something other than being a gifted speaker and getting himself elected. What I find so amusing is how Obama is made out to be some sort of political genius. It remains to be seen if he can bolster confidence and reassure the private sector that he can keep our financial crisis from spiraling out of control. Personally, I don’t believe Obama has the ability to manage our economic problems, other than raising taxes, and government “supervision” of major sectors of the economy which will lead to a continued downward spiral.

If that the Obama Administration holds true to the policies presented during the campaign, it will drive our country into a Depression more severe than that of the 1930's. On second thought, it appears in that manner Obama is very much like Roosevelt.

John
"The Great Unvetted One is inheritng a solid antiterrorism aparatus .."

I wish this were true, but that "aparatus" [sic] has given the US a black eye in the all important propaganda war, i.e. Gitmo and torturing and Black water. Here we are now, 8 years since Bin Laden, still free, and the Taliban, stronger than ever, are not been taken care of.

The dead Presidents
They are there, alright. And laughing out loud. they cannot believe how dumb we really are.

Taft

And we've been attacked how many times since 9/11?

I am SO looking forward to inauguration day so that I can begin a count on how many days the Messiah has been in office without capturing OBL and destroying the Taliban.

I'm setting the over/under at 1,461 days.

Primus

Using those techniques aren't what protected us, it was the billions spent on homeland securities and changes in air-traffic rules, as well as police work. One thing that is deeply troubling is that the CIA and the FBI may not have learned to communicate and share vital knowledge about plots and things. I read, a year ago that they hadn't.

Getting Bin Laden may have been asking the impossible, but it should have been within Bush's grasp that he mustn't provide them with propaganda victories again and again. With his Israeli/Palistinians strategy, he has just recruited this week thousand of new radical hate filled recruits for Bin Laden. No wonder they were so heart broken when McCain lost.

Divorced from reality
I find almost every post in this thread distressing. If not personal attacks on the President-elect, we have hypothetical predictions of doom and gloom, based on conditions that Obama had virtually no hand in creating. This follows a recent pattern of negativism that does little to address the critical issues that currently, and in will in the future, affect this nation.

Consequently, the conservative message has become muted due to a complete lack of leadership that encourages the positive aspects of this nation's character.

It seems no one wants to admit a few basic things about Obama. He is an intelligent pragmatist who feels that his positions are in the best interests of this nation.

Opposition to many of these positions will resonate with the American people when presented in an intelligent, pragmatic fashion.

My biggest fear with the incoming administration is growth of the nanny/welfare/entitlement state, which needs to be reduced, not expanded. This will be especially challenging given rising unemployment in almost every sector of the economy. The answer is not creation of more government jobs and more government bureaucracy. The answer is to use this money to stimulate the private sector.

It would be nice to see conservatives stay on message with issues instead of obsessively negative rhetoric.

Our first celebrity President
The people of America have elected their truly first celebrity President. They elected an orator, a great public speaker who makes an impressive appearance, who smiles broadly, speaks the common man's language, and ignites the passion of the unthinking proletariat.

The media, who swoon at his very appearance, turned Obama into a celebrity. The people of American bought it 200% and elected as President a man of no accomplishments, no achievements, no demonstrable track record and a past that he seems to be quite successful in covering up. They bought "change," "hope" and "yes we can" instead of real proof of the ability to lead in ANY capacity.

Barack Obama has nothing in common with any U.S. President, dead or alive, other than that he was elected to the office. Never before in history have the people of America elected such a completely unqualified person to the nation's highest office -- proof that being a media darling and a media-made celebrity WORKS in this country better than achievement, better than track record and better than common sense.

Arby --
-- couldn't have said it better.

My Wallet
"President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration will certainly be one to remember. Anticipation alone exceeds anything in recent memory."

Since I have no plans to watch BHO's inauguration or speech, I will have little memory of it. Of course, my wallet will remember his regime for many years to come.

Thanks a lot, Obamalot-Spendalot!

JFK? Not even close.
Not that I am a great lover of JFK's Presidency, but he did issue a clarion call to the nation: "Ask NOT what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

PEBOlA has managed to turn Kennedy's words into a mockery. It has been more like, "ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU...DEMAND IT"!

Music to the ears of Peggy-the-Moochers everywhere, I'm sure.

Kudos to Arby
Well said! Exactly how I feel. The scary thing is what power BHO will have with the dumb population and media behind him.

On a related subject, I know so many couples where the husband works and works and is a Republican. The dumb wife voted for BHO. (I am a woman too and can say this) What is wrong with women? They are going to bring down this country.

Hey Poncho!
Poncho, wouldn't the LEFT call your biggest fear nanny state/welfare/entitlements as negative conservative rhetoric?

Arby
Don't forget the Dope from Hope. BHO may well be a rockstar POTUS but the sclickmeister preceeded him in that caapacity.

the prez is supposed to communicate?
We think of Lincoln these days as a great communicator (a traits most of our more effective presidents have in common)
*******************************************************************************************************************************
Stokes is on to something here. Speaking was certainly not one of W’s strong suits. If only he had studied a little more in speech class – who knows what might have been.

One of my favorite Bushisms:
“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." —Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004

…wait a minute – yikes – he may have meant that?!?!

No
I don't know if it's worth the time to respond to someone who can't spell Pancho correctly(once is a typo;twice is a misspelling), but nanny/welfare/entitlement state is an issue.

It can be framed in negative rhetoric, or it can be framed in positive rhetoric.

For instance, Arby is commended several times for the following rhetoric:

>The people of American bought it 200% and elected as President a man of no accomplishments, no achievements, no demonstrable track record and a past that he seems to be quite successful in covering up. They bought "change," "hope" and "yes we can" instead of real proof of the ability to lead in ANY capacity.<

I'm wondering why this post, which is basically a flurry of generic insults, is commended, when it doesn't address any particular issue, and only serves to promote obsessive emotionalism.

I'm really curious as to how conservatives think continual harping on Obama being unqualified will help move this country forward. He's been elected, so qualifications are a moot point. The only message it projects is one of sour grapes.

Personally, I refuse to spend the next four years dwelling on impending doom.

Similarities
If I were president elect I wouldn't associate myself with past leaders that had been assassinated. This may convey a death wish, in other words becoming a martyr for something. BO would be truly dangerous.

Not A special Day For Me....
I do not intend to watch the inauguration of the biggest fake ever elected to be our president. People who voted for him will get what they deserve. The rest of us had better stay vigilant.

well said Barbara
it makes me sick to think of the inauguration, you are correct, the biggest fake ever elected to president. i am not going to watch it.

i am more interested in what will happen in the days after it.

i pray all are ready for it

BHO and crew
evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. to deceive is to make others believe falsehood and truth and accept wrong as right. Our defnese against deception is to know God's Word, for "all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness"

I'm with you
Barbara, If you forget... and others, I will NOT
watch the 'investiture' of the O. I intend to be doing something other than having tv/radio and very likely no internet that day.
If he isn't forthright enough to tell the American people just who he is and where he came from and where the money came from to buy the White House then he doesn't need my support.
As far as I'm concerned he's the president of the idiots who couldn't look past what they perceive as a pretty face, could ignore his
nefarious connections and his marxist rhetoric.
So he can read a script written by a Chicago
political thug, so what, that doesn't make him presidential or even Senatorial material. Just a thought, how many days will he show up in the Oval Office? More or less than the 148 he showed up in the Senate on OUR DIME? It may be a dead horse, but dead horses STINK and until we know his citizenship, he's just keeping the seat warm in the W.H. and it makes no difference if he answers or not, he's already told us all we need to know by NOT telling us.
And this will haunt him throughout his hopefully
one term.

Yo Taft!
Torture?? 3 big time terrorist leaders waterboarded to get valuable intel. This is why we don't just shoot them on the battlefield. Or is making a verbal joke to a prisoner torture. Or forcing them to wear women't underwear on their heads. At Gitmo, they are treated very well, more comfort than our valient troops receive. They still yell up to the guards that they will be back on the battlefield killing us. Their two biggest complaints are: 1) not enough skittles candy, and 2) soccer balls given them to use are too hard. When PEBO and his ACLU bugs get their way and the terrorist prisoners are brought to CONUS to stand trial as basic criminals, they will be awarded all rights of discovery, revealing our intel gathering techniques (oh, wait, the NY and LA Times already have done this)and perhaps released into the general population, as others have suggested. Perhaps YOU could volunteer to take one or more of them in your neighborhood. Just remember to hide the cutlery. BTW, exactly what "Bush" policy re Palestine(Jordanian Arabs)vis-a-vis Israel (the only sane nation in the region)causes more Islamist crazies to flock to the AlQueda banner? He is giving tens of millions of taxpayer $$ a year to the "Palestinian Authority" with nothing but resentment to show for it. Let them take the money that their leaders steal and use it to better the lot of its citizens. Why do you hate Israel, bud?

The Anointed One
I think that PEBO has put up a front of cabinet nominees that have lulled the "conservative" intelligentia to sleep. They have been tripping over each other to praise the One for His wisdom. Things to look for in the first year: 1) Push to enact more "intelligent" gun control laws. An armed citizenry is ever the stumbling block of the liberal tyrant, and besides, who in this day and age needs a gun? 2) Re-enactment of a "Fairness Doctrine." Yet another way to get back at their "enemies" by liberals. Talk radio and any meaningful opposition to the leftist power structure in the media will disappear, with the cooperation of the major networks. The internet will survive as perhaps the only meaningful counterweight to Obama/Reid/Pelosi power. 3)Government provided healthcare. People have changed since the defeat of "HillaryCare," and seem to be open to a chimera. It will create new "crimes," such as seeing your own doctor outside of the system. The big corporations will be carrying water for this, as they see it as a way of dumping their employee healthcare expense onto the taxpayer. This is the "other shoe" dropping as part of the bailout. When people realize that they have to wait 2 years for an MRI, CT scan or surgery, or maybe not enough expensive treatments for any illness are available, it will be too late. This, I am sure, is a partial list, and I am sure that the great people on this blog will come up with others, but I think these will be first. Change we can believe in...

Different Time, Different Government
While the circumstance are eerily similar and it appears that the financial institutions are behind this again, you can't really expect an FDR type program to work like it did then. Over 80,000 of the over 130,000 pages of regulations now on the books were written between 1971 and today with another 3,000 pending. It's hard to say how many regulations existed in 1930, but the onslaught of federal regulation generated by the FDR administration resulted in the establishment of the Congressional Record to keep track of the new ones.

It is safe to say that, during FDR's time, it was far easier to generate a statute and the regulations required to enforce it without causing a disaster in unintended areas. It's amazing that anyone can work at all now or any business can get started. What's more amazing is that Congress can be in session without messing something up.

We need someone who's willing to press Ctrl, Alt, Del a couple of times and return our limiting government to its proper role.

Barack wants...
Barack wants everyone to think he is on-the-level of Abraham, Franklin, and John. However, those informed, know that Barack thinks of himself above all of that. Better still, an elitist, an intelligent, eloquent but untested conman as our leader of the “Free World” (Jimmy Carter was the first, Bill Clinton the second). “The obvious apprehension is that the anointed one is a stranger—a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant but flawed stranger with whom we had a sweltering affair. Once we wake up, we will see the ring and wonder who exactly we married last night.” If President Obama is able to parley Congress to get what he has promised (taking from Peter and giving it to Paul; you will always get Paul’s vote), this wake-up-call may come to late to save America. We made the mistake of giving him the ring on November 4th. We were so disposed in doing so, only time will tell if we will live to regret it. Nov. 4th, 2008 will become known as “Judgment Day”.

The collective judgment displayed by the majority of the voters on Nov. 4th, 2008 is very disturbing. Obama reminds me of others throughout history, with their ability to so quietly and enchantingly say one thing, mean and do another; and people will shake their heads in approval of the very things they oppose. What is amazing is they believe they have agreed with him. The results of this election provide proof that people can be hypnotized to the degree that they not know what they are doing. What is very scary is that history has also proven repeatedly; that those willing to agree without questioning become hypnotized and are the first to die by the millions.

My hope was that voters would choose the more difficult path of liberty and limited government; so that the American dream and culture for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would once again triumph and flourish.

I'm with U on this one..I'm gonna head out to my Farm (50 miles away) and , weather permitting, intend to cut firewood all day..If the WX isn't accommodating I'll go in the barn and split firewood..Either way I WIN No Prez for me that day; I do wish him the best tho--My Grandkids deserve that. HAPPY NEW YEAR.!!!!

At least Carter and Clinton had been
governors. Clinton had also been one for years and also an AG.

Carter had also been a captain in the Navy. And Carter had run a farm.

Big Bro O hasn't led a Boy Scout troop, did vote over 100 times *present* in the IL leg. rather than commit to *aye* or *nay^ votes that would actually put him on record, and did spend merely 143 days in the US Sen. before declaring himself fit to be pres.

If he isn't a natural born citizen, he won't be president. And should be become one, when the next 9/11 happens, is he going to decide *present*?

It will be a typical Obama "Messiah"
speech, packed with high flying rhetoric that the Obamedia will talk about in superlatives for weeks. It will be the same empty trash he used to get elected and the same empty heads will love it. The best part about January 20th is that this is the day reality starts closing in on Mr Obama. He starts taking the hits for decisions his administration makes. I can't wait to hear the excuses and see how many more go under the bus!

What About Freedom of Speech?
Since Obama snubbed his nose at Article II of the U.S. Constitution and violated the supreme law of the land by refusing to provide proof of citizens as a natural born U.S. citizen, he's setting a precedent for foreigners to challenge the law in 2012 which is very dangerous for the U.S. citizens and diminishes the mandated laws that have been in existence for 220 years. As a constitutional lawyer and former U.S. Senator and president-elect, he holds himself above the law while the rest of the country must follow the law. And, then we have the Fairness Doctrine that the far left liberals support so they can control the media, but it is my opinion that we already watched the controled media during the election when they made McCain and Palin out to be idiots and elevated their man 24/7 and dwell on his glistening pectorals and that he walks on water. One thing I've learned from this election is that money talks and if you have the right friends in the right places with the right kind of money then anyone in that position can buy a seat in the White House even if you're an illegal alien.

Well Said, Rose from CA.....

lol...yes, these are trying times....but your perception appears to have lots of truth to it......very sad indeed!

LOL...No Doubt....Barb in AZ..

"Not A special Day For Me....

"I do not intend to watch the inauguration of the biggest fake ever elected to be our president. People who voted for him will get what they deserve. The rest of us had better stay vigilant."

Think I'll watch "The Simpson's" marathon that day or something......

Boy oh Boy

Why do republicans hate America, the best country on the face of this earth, so much? If you hate America so much, I heard Iran is accepting Republican refugees.

SDF
What are you talking about Republicans hating the US? If I remember correctly, wasn't the Dems who put up an illegal allien for the POTUS, had Al Franenstein steal the Senate election and Blago running wild in Chicago?
