The Republican Wilderness: Four Years - Or Forty?

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The Grand Old Party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, & Ronald Reagan, has entered the proverbial wilderness.  It moves from the box seats to the cheap seats, or better - to mix the metaphor a bit – the backbenches.

How Republicans handle this exile, and just how long the era lasts, will depend largely on what is done with and in the wilderness.

The idea of a wilderness period as a picture of exile is actually much older than American politics or even anything from our ancestors across the pond.  It is a concept dating back to Biblical history and the frustrations and wanderings of the ancient children of Israel.  Poised to enter the “Promised Land” of abundance and fulfillment following centuries of bondage and privation, and in the wake of the clearly providential exodus led by Moses, that generation fell tragically short.

They missed their rendezvous with destiny.

Entering the wilderness – a place, but also a process – they lived out a forty-year reminder of what had been left behind, while also grieving the loss of a compelling future.  They had allowed short-term frustration to short-circuit long-held principles and dreams.

And the Lord told them in the book of Deuteronomy that the reason for the wilderness was, “to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart.”  In other words, the wilderness for them was a divinely ordained “time out” – the kind of thing my dad would do when he sent me to my room to “think about” what I had done (when it was really all my brother’s fault).

The wilderness was a time for purging and preparing.  Attitudes, habits, and ambitions had to be dealt with, and priorities revisited and clarified.  The duration of the wilderness depended on how well the lessons were learned.  In that ancient case, a journey that should have taken no more than a year became a forty-year generational failure.

And something that was lost, forgotten, or just misplaced, desperately needed to be found.

As the Republican Party moves into its own desert of exile for a while, it is time for reflection.  It needs to figure out what it really stands for and what it can offer the nation the next time it is called upon to lead.  How it manages in the wilderness will determine whether it will come back in four years, or forty - if at all.

That another such time will come is, of course, almost inevitable – not just because of very real concerns about the capacity of recent victors to translate historically flawed policies into real success, but because of the inherent cycles of politics.   What happened on November 4th was due nearly as much to the tendency of politics and history to repeat themselves and the public’s tendency to soon tire of anyone on center stage, as it was a mandate for real “yes, we can” change.

Writing in the book, In the Arena: A Memoir of Defeat and Renewal, the late and former president Richard Nixon dedicated a chapter to the phenomenon of the wilderness.  He knew a thing or two about the ups and downs and ins and outs of political life.  The period between his loss in the governor’s race in 1962 and the winning of the White House in 1968, is a textbook case of how to come back from the kind of defeat that tempts opponents to write someone off permanently.

Nixon mentioned something described by Arnold Toynbee in his, Study of History, described as “the phenomenon of withdrawal…a disengagement and temporary withdrawal of the creative personality from his social milieu and his subsequent return to the same milieu transfigured in a new capacity with new powers.”  Throughout history, great leaders demonstrated this.  Certainly Nixon did and clearly identified with others who went through deep valleys.

In the 1991 movie, City Slickers, Billy Crystal and his best friends head out west looking for adventure.  Crystal’s wife in the film wanted him to, while moving cattle from point A to B, along the way find something.  Something he had lost.  Something he needed to recover.  His smile.  The movie ended happily with said smile finding its way back to Billy’s face.

For the Republicans, they do not need to find something as insignificant as a group smile.  Rather, they should be looking for something much more vital if they are to have a real shot at coming back from this wilderness.

The key to this is found in another place where the ancient scriptures mention a wilderness.  We learn about this from the writings of the prophet Isaiah, when in the 40th chapter of his book we come across the vital phrase, “the voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

No doubt Winston Churchill, another frequent wilderness wanderer, identified with this little phrase during his years as a political has-been in the 1930s.  He had no power, no position, and no prospects.

But he found his “voice” – and began to warn his countrymen about Hitler and dangers to come.  Later, when he once again found himself in forced exile, having been voted out of office in the Labor sweep just a couple of months after the victory had been won in Europe, he found his “voice” again.   This time he did not speak in the House of Commons, but rather in the gymnasium of a small college in the American mid-west.  From that unlikely pulpit in the wilderness he cried out about an “iron curtain.”

The Republicans have clearly found the wilderness.  Now they need to find their voice.

The GOP needs to figure out what it wants to be if and when it grows back up.  Are ideas like limited government, the free market, and at least an interest in understanding the relationship between the morality of personal responsibility and self-discipline and the ills of the larger culture – now officially gone forever?

The word paradigm comes from the Greek language and the word paradeigma.  It basically means a perception, or frame of reference – a lens through which to interpret reality.   Author Steven Covey in his book, The Eighth Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness (hint: the eighth habit is “finding your voice”), insists that “if you want to make minor incremental changes and improvements, work on practices, behavior or attitude.  But if you want to make significant, quantum improvements, work on paradigms.”

The time for tweaking is past.  As the nation readies itself to enter a new era of “bold experimentation” under an activist Obama administration, it is time for the party now finding itself in the political wilderness to find what it has lost.  By definition, something lost is not something new – it is something once possessed.

Republicans can find their voice during the wilderness period, but to do so will require a willingness to have the wisdom and humility to make a paradigm shift, one that surely involves a quantum journey back to the future.  The must find what once worked – and has been lost.

And if anyone thinks that the idea of going to the past to find something that will resonate in the future is not politically feasible, please remember this: America just elected a guy who advocates policies and programs that failed 75 years ago.

Wrong!
It's all about numbers, and you right-wingers don't have them. And what you do have are getting smaller every day. You should come over to our side and help in completing what FDR and LBJ started.

Dead!
The Republican Party is dead. Dead Dead!
I think it was Jason Davis who said something like, "When there are more people in the wagon than there are pulling the wagon, it is all over."
Well, even though there are probably not more in the wagon today, there soon will be. Lets see, everyone working for GM, Ford, Chrysler. They will need a bail out about every six months. California, Massachusetts, Michigan, etc. Tell me the people in the wagon will ever want to get out.
Joe's right. The Commies have the numbers. Dead!

The Republican Party may be.....
politically DOA, but conservatism is not, and as such, a complete breakaway from the GOP would be in order....

and talking about Nixon?......yeah, ALOT of good that guy did.....sheesh....?

"I am not a crook".......lol

At some point
USSA's credit rating will also get adjusted...downward.
We have been living off borrowed money from China and Saudi Arabia for a while. At this point America has a majority of it's people as tax consumers. Unless China and other wealth producing nations decide to allow us to tax them for our benefit, there is no way we will dig ourselves out of the hole we are in.
Pretty soon their good will and our credit will effectively run out.
Unless we start producing tangible wealth again we will find ourselves in truly dire straights.

Wilderness wonderings were
filled with murmurrings. I want to go back.

I personally refuse to go back to progressive Republican ideas. If anything comes out of this it should be ideology or what do I believe in.

I for one will denounce anyone, even within the party of liberal beliefs. The party of the Constituion, is one of individual freedom. Reject big business welfare, and domestic welfare.

Many politicians use this to buy votes because of the money that is used. The Republican party has to decide, will ideology buy their votes or money of the left of promises to offer my taxes for votes.

The Party is OVER
Here's what everyone's trying to avoid and that's the deep level of racial content that is a resonating undercurrent.

According to population studies performed by the US Census Report of 2007, fully 43% of all Voters under the age of 20 are ethnic minorities and by the year 2050 the entire voter population balance will have changed, that is, the USA Voter majority will be what is now considered part of a minority group. (reported in Aug 7 2008 New York Times)

Racial and ethnic minorities now account for 43 percent of Americans under 20. Among people of all ages, minorities make up at least 40 percent of the population in more than one in six of the nation’s 3,141 counties.
The latest population changes by race, ethnicity and age, as of July 1, 2007, were generally marginal compared with the year before. But they confirm the breadth of the nation’s diversity, and suggest that minorities — now about a third of the population — might constitute a majority of all Americans even sooner than projected by census demographers, in 2050.

Historically, the under 20 voter, minority or not, will vote Democrat for obvious reasons. They've got the largest number of future concerns and seek the most assistance, they think it will be more available with Democrats in power. Put that together with 95% of the Black vote, 66% of the Hispanic vote, between whom resides twice the level of unemployed who want and need extended benefits and within which the largest number of groups exist that seek one form of government assistance and it is clear that the Democratic Party now owns the Government and now has a clear path to continued dominance.

The likelihood of the Republican Party regaining the Presidency, Senate or House of Representatives is statistically and realistically a diminishing possibility. The direction and meaning of government has, if nothing else, changed to an entirely new direction and with it, a new set of expectations.

You're Excused. but there is no excuse..

"Lincoln wasn't a hateful racist bigot like 'y'all. He was a compassionate liberal progressive."

Oh yes, not a racist at all...he only proposed sending y'all's forebears back to Liberia...permitted racist negro platoons to be used as cannon fodder...You may need to wait a few years to try and pass that concept off. There are still a few of us around that remember the truth.

Lincoln was made great by events that shaped his presidency. However, there was no Saturday Night Live to do "Great Ape" impressions of him to belittle him in the public eye. The newspapers who did call him the great ape...and they did...also respected the office and closed ranks once Fort Sumter was fired upon, not looking for ways to do front page exposes on how Pinkerton's was protecting the president and looking for confederate spies. He got much better treatment in wartime than the current occupant of the office.

NOW IS THE TIME TO GROOM a Candidate

PALIN is awesome :::::::::::::: except:::

her grammar is the worst and it stands out like a chopped off hand:

OBAMA spent 4 years and MILLIONS on personal coaches, a scripted Hollywood and media production.

HE NEVER NEVER NEVER apologized or explained anything:
1. HE JUST NEVER KNEW:: that was his scripted reply to every question that was raised about his incompetence, lying, criminal and corrupt past. even including Auntie who lived in the slums and was an illegal!

Why Palin can never win:

Palin has the values, the character, the spine,
that "judgment" credibility, etc.:
However::::::::::: you cannot take the HICKSVILLE out of her:
When she speaks, her pathetic grammar skills is grating.

POTUS has been crafted to be a HOLLYWOOD image:

slick
polished
exception speaking skills
100% scripted

The illiterate dumbest generation is obsessed with brain fried druggie Hollywood glitz and they are now the majority

Stick to the FACTS !

Obama spent 1 billion and 4+ years running for President
he spent MILLIONS on personal coaches and a Hollywood scripted campaign:

HE PLAYED THE RACE CARD and the SENILE Senior CARD, he lied about his lies, and never never took questions from anyone, He preached from his Hollywood rock star stage, and played HOOPS infront of the cameras to generate a mental image of the "YOUTH" "Physically" strong young man agains the crippled senile senior.
HE used the reverse discrimination joker to sucker the media, the illiterates, the minorities and what is verified now as the dumbest generation to "ALMOST" LOSE to a

Liberal, senile crippled senior, without cash, without the support of enemies from around the World, and without lying about anything.

Character is King
There! There! Now! You are you injecting hateful racist bigotry into this election. koolmuse shame on you. The vast overwhelming majority of Americans are simply seeing the color of his politics. You democrats love to keep this pot simmering because it's an easy way to forment voter motivation. The identity of the black man should be "American". U.S. history is and should be considered his heritage. If the black man thought this way he would think what is best for America. You judge a man on the content of his character, not his skin color". -- The Rev. King Anyone with intelligence knows this.

As to the subject in question, Being brutally honest and upright, ,informed, sensible, humble would help both voter and politicians to restore our country's moral character. I would take any cross section
of Americans that matched those character qualities over experienced career politicians. We need national repentance for
moral corruption that has not been addressed.

It is Once again the 1850s.
The Republican Party must be destroyed just as the Whig Party was by those, such as Lincoln, Seward, and Chase, who correctly realized that the Whig Party could not be reformed. The Republican Party has gone in directions that Archaic-Cons do not wish to travel.

The Pseudo-Cons have a stranglehold on the Republican Party and they will never give up their power. The McCain candidacy, the two Bush presidencies, the Paulson Bailout, how much more evidence need be presented that the Republican Party must be eradicated.

The name of a new Conservative Party is not really that important. What is crucial is that a truly conservative party be formed from the ashes of the Republican Party.

Down with the Whigs!

The voice in the wilderness
God has raised up leaders throughout history to guide his children through the wilderness. We have short memories, unfortunately. We want instant gratification and, like the Israelites in the desert, we begin to worship idols and forget God's promises. If this is a wilderness period in America's history, so be it. I am praying for godly leadership and vision as I believe this divine experiment is not yet over. We need to focus on character and not power, the seductress of the political illuminati.

Treason And The Unthinkable.

The country commited both on Nov.4.

If only that were the worst part.

Both Egon (Reply 4) and pjal (Reply 7) are correct. Plus, there's the overall dire state of the nation on the domestic and foreign fronts. This would be an epic challenge for any of our greatest and strongest presidents. Instead, we have one ill-advised on every level. One who will soon add a ton of federal programs. One who thinks that after a cup tea with Putin and the Iranian nut job everything will be peachy keen.

The nation has lost it's way and stands right on the edge. God help us.

This nation committed suicide last week
A majority rejected a man of service, intellect and character for a novice with no track record at all just because he could read a speech and it would be cool to vote for the black guy.

They were sold a bill of goods and now this country will begin a slide into a mediocrity from which it will never recover.

This welfare state will enlarge exponentially to buy even more votes, it provides gov't jobs to people that hand out our money to the recipient class so we pay twice, but stupid greedy people voted for even more of it thinking the rich will be the ones taxed.

The less than patriotic ingrates bash Bush and by extension McCain on the war, forgetting the lack of attacks here at home and ignoring the threats to come believing bambi will talk our enemies into being friends with us.

Can you BE that stupid? apparently so.

Obama and his minions lied through their teeth and hid behind PC when any criticism of him arose.

By the time he and pelosi etal get through there won't be anything left to work with. People like them have been slowly destroying this country for 50 years and the commie in chief will finish the job.

The split.
As one poster pointed out, the issue for the GOP is that 43% of those under 20 are minorities. Further, the Democrats picked up 67% of the hispanic vote, 95% of the black vote, 70% of young women, 67% of young men, and 57% of women over-all. In as little as 25 years or so, 1/2 the country will be non-Europeon, as their birth rate, in combination with anchor baby and chain migration and ongoing green card worker programs, guarantee these demographics.

Right now, however, there is a clear split between much of the GOP's base, and many of it's currently elected governors and senators. At the core of the split is not the issues of economic conservatism or defense, it is how to deal with the wedge social issues of immigration and abortion. The leadership, to include those such as Palin and McCain will never agree to deport illegals - yet the base believes the laws should be enforced. At the same time, three states rejected banning abortion, even when exceptions for rape, incest, and threats to the life of the mother were included. This simply confirms what has been evident for some time, and that is that even if Roe v. Wade is over-turned - abortion will not disappear. And the Supreme Court, seeing such results in states like South Dakota, may well be less likely to over-turn it in any case.

The issue for the GOP is that it can move back to clearly conservative economic policies while standing for a strong America, but it cannot turn back the clock on immigration or abortion. The US is becoming a culturally diverse country - and the GOP must mirror that change. In the case of immigration, the bitter opposition of the base ensures only that those minorities will be driven into the arms of the Democrats. In the case of abortion, the party can be pro-life, but it cannot use that position to seek to have it banned. However, I do not believe the base is willing to make that choice. Thus, the split will continue.

Paradigm and reality
Once a piece of a paradigm has failed, all beliefs (or legs)of the paradigm have to be called into disrepute. The hardcore 28% of Republicans who staunchly support the failed paradigm of wedge issues (i.e. no to all of the following: stem cell research, pro-choice, gay rights, any liberal idea, etc.)cannot construct a new paradigm without first rejecting the old paradigm. Thus far, no rejection of the old, inadequate and failed paradigm has been undertaken. Until it is taken apart, the old beliefs remain. The problem is that the old belief structure will doom the GOP because it is not able to expand the base with new voters.

Return to Power to Accomplish What?
The road the Democrats travel will not produce prosperity as their view of human nature and economics is wrong. Only the free market makes economic sense. Unless it is embraced for real and the individual empowered to act in his best interest our economy will not recover.

This is the opportunity handed to the Republicans. What the Democrats want to do will not work. If the Republicans do not champion what does work they deserve to wander in the wilderness. The problem Republicans face is there are too many within the party that have no faith in freedom. They see power flowing to politicians from a populace dependent on government. The only way to return from the wilderness is to marginalize members of the party that believe in bigger government and offer Americans a vision of prosperity built on freedom. At this point not enough Republicans believe that is true.

Pragmatism...
ought to be a significant part of the debate. There is nothing wrong with responsible tax policies. There is nothing wrong with responsible sizing of government. Will-he-nil-he tax cutting and government reduction has become the perceived stance of the Republican party. That's irresponsible.
The same applies to social issues. Draconian stances do nothing to bring understanding to society.
Nowhere in all the Biblican references in this column does one read "Do unto others..." That should have been included, and should be a working mantra for all political parties.

Pulling the Wagon or on the Wagon
If there are more people on the Wagon than pulling the wagon, it breaks down like the unlamented USSR.

Maybe it is time for a national divorce. In the Bible Israel split into north and south Kingdoms. The southern kingdom prospered for hundreds of years. A more recent example was the splitting of Czechoslovakia into the Czech and Slovak Republics. The Czechs wanted a free market economy; the Slovaks a socialistic economy.

Even the most optimistic conservatives think it will take 25-30 years to recover from the BO presidency. He also plans to make 12-20 million new Illegal Alien citizens.

How many were angered last year at the attempted Amnesty of 2007? How many were heartened that it was stopped with People Power? This, despite the entire political class' unanimous support?

Thomas
what so treasonous about voting? That's what America did on 11/4. What are you saying?

Seawolf
What you just described was the 2000 election and we are all seeing the result. Conservatives had their chance to be in charge and to make policy and in the opinion of most Americans it was a dismal failure.

So they fired your sorry Axxe's and hired the other team. Herbert Hoover has been replaced with FDR.

blame it on RINO
The conservative members of this party have always had the same (correct) voice, it's how we live our lives. It's these RINO country club, blue blood, Rockafeller Republicans that run the GOP, that screwed it up. THEY DIDN'T LISTEN TO US.
Now we're all in the wilderness. we have nothing to learn, they do!!
God help us.

alicelouise
The GOP's leadership was every bit as determined to provide amnesty to illegals, as the Democratic. What you're not connecting to, however, is that you may have won a battle, but you'd already lost the war. Neither party's leaders will enforce existing immigration laws, and the act of refusing to grant amnesty will in no way change the fact that America is now going to become the culturally diverse country that many in the GOP base fear. And there is nothing they can now do about it. This war had to be fought in the early 90's - but wasn't.

The only thing the amnesty victory did was drive more votes to the democrats - while changing nothing in terms of the shift of the US to a multi-cultural society in which whites will no longer be the majority.

And, of course, there's nothing left to split. The GOP will return to economic and military conservatism, and then adapt its message to appeal to minorities and women, or it will stay in the minority until it does.

LBJ & FDR
LBJ & FDR were true economic disasters. If you bother to read history and look at the facts as opposed to the liberal "perception". over 20% unemployment for 8 years during the depression.
If Obama is as disasterous as FDR, I don't think we will be in a financial position to survive, given the debased currency and the extreme debt. This election has turned me outright nihilistic. God help us!!

Redlac, Trulib

Excellent comments. Eexcellent points. The challenges ahead for Republican Party are on huge scale and almost beyond reach.

.........................

To wrightstrong52: I was speaking metaphorically. For those of us on the right this past election was a travesty. By the way, the country might have commited something worse than treason and the unthinkable.

Check Seawolf, Reply 16. A frightening post which, I pray, is not true.

If
If the Republican's maintain their "culture wars" against women, latinos, gays, and Muslims..

Then they will confine themselves to irrelevancy.

David Stokes: The Republican Wilderness.
Obviously, all one has to do is read all the articles about Republicans needing to make a come back to realize that the GOP might be in some trouble!! I've read many of those articles and Mr. Stokes presents the best solution thus far...step back...see where we were...see what's good about that, and lets move forward in a conservative idea ridden way; let's make a real "conservative plan" without lots of government involvement or at least keep that involvement to a bare minimum. What's more, David Stokes has written a very poignant account, using some prime examples, of where we are in the conservative Republican party that needs to to be taken seriously in order to repair or replace it.

56,000,000 is no small number
and unfortunately many cons. didn't vote at all in this election, so there are untapped millions.

The OH vote was only 5000 more than 2004, even with 200,000 specious registrations by ACORN and ilk.

When FDR became pres., there was NO national debt, NO deficit, NO unfunded $59 trillion Soc. Sec.-Medicare obligations. They ALL came from Dems. and Dem. Congresses.

The financial credit crisit comes from Dems.:
1938, FDR, Freddie Mac
1968, Johnson, Fannie Mae
1977, Carter, the first CRA
1992, Clinton, the 2nd CRA
HUD Sec. Cuomo under Clinton threatened banks with de-licensing if they didn't lend to more bad credit risks and outright crooks.

The above is all still functioning. Next year, there'll be another crisis, producing more money printing and inflation: Voila, stagflation and Carter re-dux.

And then the socio-commies and their gloating will be gone again. As to demographics, Hispanics are considered white, they inter-marry 6 to 10 with whites and assimilate, so the multiculturalists don't win over all either.

One election does not a cataclism make.

Palin/Jindal in 2012. Make O a one-termer, like Carter, since the Big Bro O is resurrecting all Carter's failed admin. for *new* appointments.

Some hope and change. 1978, here we come.

LOST IN THE WILDERNESS?

.....HARDLY ...We are reading too much into this election ...it was just time for an oil change ...the natives were restless ...

.....On the positive side was the emergence of Sarah Palin ...without her on the ticket McCain would have been blown out of the water and Obama would have had his mandate which he wants badly ...that is why he is mustering his troops to go to GA to defeat Chambliss ...

...Remember that Reagan's landslide came after LBJ's landslide and after the Nixon/Watergate debacle ...one election does not make a trend ...just like the stock market goes up and down, so does the electorate swing back and forth from Liberal to Conservative ...it is a cycle ...

.....When the mob is unhappy they throw the bums out and elect new bums .....COLOSSUS

Re: Joey from NE... Wrong!
Joey to the world,

Sorry but the Russians tried that and it doesn't work...then...now...or will it ever--especially in America. Not exactly sure of what you mean by "numbers"...dont get too excited about your numbers, they have changed before and will again!!

Timeless wisdom.

Hey, Stokes... great commentary.

More than ever, America desperately needs its next generation of leaders. But ONLY the ones who, as you put it... have "found their voice".

And especially those who can get away from the drone of green eye-shade rhetoric, and engage in basic but effective "people speak".

Because we will need some truly compelling voices to cut through all of the falsehoods that are put out by the left, the media, the entertainment industry and academia. And that folks, is a lot of mis-information.

Because tragically, we have an electorate that is increasingly ignorant (not stupid) and is at too many times prone to sit on its hands and complain.

But, we will not have to do all the work.

Liberals will again make fools of themselves, as more and more people will learn the very same lessons that many of their parents did...

...that leftist policies wind up hurting the very people that they are supposed to help.

Take it to the bank, friends... the left will self-destruct. Again.

But sadly, and for way too many... it will be a very expensive lesson.

But then again, some stop signs only get put up... after the cross and the flowers.

This Lurch to the Left
Just because we will likely have a return of many Republicans to office come 2010 there is no reason to feel good about the future. We have had many swings between the two parties but the path of our society has been inexorably towards more government and less freedom.

However far to the right we may swing it never compensates for the leftward swing prior to it. The problem is that people that truly believe in limited government do not go into government. Government is populated by those that believe in it's goodness regardless of the lack of evidence to bolster their position.

So we go lurching towards less and less freedom until we are forced to rise up and shake off the chains we have placed on ourselves. History has not ended, we have just forgotten it. Re-learning the lesson is not pleasant.

BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY

.....OBAMA refuses to, or cannot, produce a Certified Birth Certificate ...everyone born in America has one ...until he produces his I will not accept him as my President ...

.....This is rich ...we are about to be "Ruled" (not governed) possibly, by a Keynan National or an Indonesian Muslim ...

.....This is right out of Serling's Twilight Zone ...better than a Tom Clancy novel .....COLOSSUS

Redlac (the split) is spot on!
Good post. Good analysis. GOP has to examine its former paradigm and create a new one. Wedge items are in the way of moving forward. Former paradigm wedge issues continue to be championed by Palin, neocons, fundamentalists, Hannity, Demint, etc. and the "loyal" 28% who view any review or criticism as disloyalty (see retribution against Parker, Brooks, Smith, Cameron, Buckley Jr, et al). Kill the messengers, I guess.

I'll read the whole thing later, but
one obvious point occurs.

Which is the crux of the whole Mac the Knife, Repubelickem loss.

I don't give a damn what happens to Repubelickems.

I only care what happens to Reaganism.

If they had remembered that they wouldn't have abused us Conservatives.

Now I've divorced the Rocky Feeler Robber Barons of the Gilt Gird Cabin Conservative Free GOP.

I want a New American Conservative Party.

Rush, Sean, Lara, Levin, Coulter should get together over dinner with Dick Morris, maybe Sarah Palin and maybe Newt and lauch the thing.

Oh, lest we be unclear--the dump Reagan movement had only two Values. Shamnesty at any price, even losing, and Christian Hating Pro-homoness.

That's the generation that "knew not Joseph" that "always err in their hearts" and will "die in the wilderness."

Only the people of God, one culture and clear on their Morality, is going to make it out of the desert.

But I'm with Coulter from a week ago, let's acclerate the process by hunting down every Mac the Knife supporter.

The Big Mick

The Big Mick's post is the problem
Not the solution. Old paradigm thought process. In with the old, I guess.

Joey
What FDR and LBJ started is what has caused the financial crisis. How many times must it be said that you can't tax your way to prosperity? Every able-bodied person has to put their oar in the water to row the ship of state.

You will soon find out what socialism means -- a stunted economy, stunted lives due to higher taxes and regulations everywhere. When they destroy capitalism in the U.S. (the stated goal of the Communists and Obama is a Communist), then everyone will have to work for the government. Good luck enjoying any freedom or hope for improvement. We will grind along in small, cold apartments, riding public transit and harrassed by government if we don't keep our heads down.

Please read about the miserable lives of the Cubans for the last 40 years (the ones who weren't forced to leave or killed in firing squads). Castro approves of Obama. Wonder why?

The paradigm
Our shift needs to be a return to conservative values and the courage to lead from those values.
President Bush professes "compassionate conservatism" that led to bigger government, not smaller. Medicare, passive acceptance of the benefits of the financial liberalism and then government solutions to true market problems. The Republican Congress gave him "big government" legislation and he signed it.
Senator McCain gave us restrictions on our contributions to campaigns, "global warming" cap and trade rhetoric, recommended "forget the law" immigration policies and general criticism of his party but not the opponents. We selected our failure (though by a plurality instead of a majority).
Take back our children's education. Don't be afraid of insisting on basic education and a large dose of "American history". They understand what it is like to work for something that is then "given" to someone else, we just don't explain it well.
My thoughts, thanks for the time.

40 years may be just the begining

If the republicans do not go back to the principles of fiscal responsibility and a balanced national budget, strict adherence to the words of the Constitution, maintaining a strong military, and limited government, they may as well become accustomed to bein g out of power for the next 40 years and beyond. Why should we support them if they are going to do exactly like the democrats? Why should we support them if they are going to be like EITHER of the Bush's? Why should we support them when they run RINO's like McLame?

The answer is,WE DON'T!! The last election is proof and it is just the begining of what the conservatives are NOT GOING TO ACCEPT ANY MORE. We will accept the democrats in office before we will see another worthless MODERATE republican elected.

The one GOOD THING that came of the last election is to draw a strong distinction between the conservatives and the republicans. Here to fore they had been the same. Those days are GONE!!

It's Not About Republicans!
This was not an election based on party. It's an election based on promises that were broken by Obama beginning with his promise to McCain. It's an election based on a 99.9% slanted bias far left mainstream media whose mouths were dripping of Mrs. Butterworth's syrup for Obama and trashing McCain and Palin. It was an election based on unprecedented campaign funds brought in from anti-American countries according to news reports that the government won't bother to examine and do their job. It's an election based on race and misleading by the media reporting that a African-American aka Black man won the race because he's neither, he's bi-racial. 50-50! Yet, the White media doesn't recognize him as White, only Black. It's a race where the Article II of the Constitution only means some thing to White candidates but means nothing in this race because of "race" and who knows if he's a legal natural born citizen or an illegal alien because so far, that fact has been a non-issue by the judiciary and the far left media.

My thoughts
I've compiled some thoughts on rehabbing the Republican Party. Here's a link for any that are interested

http://inyourrightmind.blogtownhall.com/2008/11/14/republic an_rehab.thtml

It is about Republicans
If conservatives keep blaming (pick one)the media, McCain, fraudulent elections, Kathleen Parker, Couric, African Americans, RINO's, the Race Card, illegal immigrants, muslims, latinos, gays, intellectuals, etc., etc., etc., then no resolution or rebuilding can begin within the GOP. The message from Nov 5th indicates a national repudiation of the status quo within the GOP. The overriding need is to attract voters to conservatism, not to drive them away. For example, a person can be pro choice and can also be a conservative. If you cannot accept that proposition, you might as well form a new political entity. Good luck on that.

future
The Democrats won big because voters were sick of George Bush and the direction that the country was heading in.
It's not so much what the Republicans do now that counts, it's really all about the Democrats and what they do.
If the democrats do a good job and please the voters, then they will keep power, if they do a bad job, then they could find themselfs walking in the same shoes as the Republicans.
It's about job performance.

Forty Years a Short Time, Unless...
Forty years in the wilderness of radical Liberalism being punished and wandering to and fro like the Israelites may be a short time for the U.S. unless those who know and care can figure out some way to overcome a generation of dumbing down of U.S. voters in our schools.
The radical movement started in the 1960s-70s, ironically in reaction to the Southeast Asia War brought by JFK and perpetuated by LBJ until Nixon got us out of that self-inflicted tragedy.
Then Liberals took over our schools. For evidence think of William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Ward Churchill, the NEA.
Muslims like Walid Khalidi are now moving into our schools, and the NEA pushes education in Islam to teach tolerance of diversity.
It is a daunting task but our first order of business on the domestic front of the culture war ought to be countering the influence of Liberal domination of our schools. It can be done by mandatory, remedial education of K-Graduate level students.
The courses in remedial education would include: 1) reading with comprehension to recognize lies and propaganda, 2) reasoning logically rather than emoting and relying on false assumptions, 3) real vs. revised history, 4) civics with emphasis on recognition of ACORN and other election fraud, 5) the ethics of intolerance of the intolerant and common cause/unity over diversity and divisiveness, and 6) competitive sports to teach fairness is more important than winning pyrrhic victory.
We’ve got to do something. We can’t just sit here and hope for the best, hope for change like the Liberal ostriches have bought into with Barack Hussein Obama, their heads in the sand, butts high in the air, waiting for what comes next.

Wilderness
Remember that the reason the Lord gave for 40 years was that he wanted to kill off the generation That knew Egypt. We need to purge the party of the generation that sold it's soul to the socialist temptation - get rid of those that got sucked in by that most tempting of aphrodesiacs - power. GET RID OF THEM!

Paul...Wilderness...
I agree…I just hope it does not take 40 years! Republicans must get back to their roots and confront Democrats each and every time they try to force their socialist agenda upon this Nation. They must learn to DO and SAY the right thing, not what is politically correct. In DOING and SAYING the right thing, it must be in actions and terms that the people can understand and can easily see, what is RIGHT and what is WRONG. Republicans must once again learn to speak with one voice, expressing the virtues and building blocks that founded this great Nation; which are as relevant today as they were 230+ years ago.

This election has set the course of this nation for the next two or three decades and possibly forever. I fear that the voting public does not really understand the choice they just made. It holds only the promise of security and will definitely create bigger government at all levels, and more entitlements; and carries a huge price tag of more expanded governmental power, deficits, and taxes at the expense of our individual liberties. My hope was that voters would choose the more difficult path of liberty and limited government; so that the American dream and culture for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would once again triumph and flourish.

Make no mistake: Barack Hussein Obama’s Socialist policies are both scary and very risky. Where ever Socialism has been tried, it has failed each and every time.

“Hope” and “change” may be pleasant catchalls, but as Benjamin Franklin wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac, “He that lives upon Hope will die fasting.” On change, John Adams wrote, “A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.” In 1787, the year our Constitution was adopted, Thomas Jefferson, wrote, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.” I am hopeful that we shall not have to go that route.

More Hate
#37,

Yep. That is the ticket. If only we hate homos enough (and why not throw in the 25 million or so druggies while we are at it) the Republicans will gather enough votes to win elections.

And further up thread: I admit that Mexicans do not have a Northern European Culture - however they tend to be hard working Christians who will in time fit in well in America - just like Italians do these days.

The paradigm shift
Shift to the Goldwater paradigm. That is how we survive. Individualism is the framework from which the Republican should operate. Every issue must be approached from the perspective of individualism.

In terms of the three-legged stool model, the formula is:
1. Strong national defense. That does not mean start unnecessary wars. It means to put American self-interest first. It means to be willing and able to deal decisively and quickly with security threats, without apology, at the least possible expense in American lives and treasure.
2. Pro-capitalism. No government bailouts, health care, charities, etc. Republicans should oppose ALL environmental initiatives and ALL efforts to regulate business and should work to reverse those currently in place. What is so difficult to understand about this?
3. Pro-personal freedom. Drop the anti-abortion/gay marriage/embryonic stem cell/Internet gambling/baseball steroids/etc. etc. social conservative efforts. The positions on social issues the GOP has previously taken are losers and are a contradiction to the principle of individualism. This lack of consistency has destroyed the Party. You cannot consistently and effectively oppose faith-based welfare or any leftist statist idea for that matter if you believe that God told you to take over government and impose a way of life on people. It is incompatible with individualism--the notion of that the individual has inalienable rights and is an end in himself, not chattel in the service of others.

This is the ONLY way the Republican Party can survive over the long-term. The Party's inconsistency has come to its logical conclusion: Death. Only by weeding out the ideological inconsistencies can the conservative movement flourish intellectually and deal successfully with changing times.

The Next Conservatism
For those interested in this vital topic, Paul Weyrich, Bill Lind and others over at "Free Congress Foundation" have already taken the measure of this topic in a 5-monograph series entitled "The Next Conservatism." Presciently, they foresaw the failures of the Bush Administration well before many others did, and moved to address the crisis at its intellectually rotten core. The GOP forgot from wence it came, and instead mimiced the Democrats, promising all things to all people - which is a path to destruction. Given a choice between full-blown Democrats and Democrat-lite, the voters chose the former.

If the GOP hopes to have a viable future, it had better rediscover what once animated it in the time of Ronald Reagan, the spirit and ideas of the Founders. If it cannot or will not relearn the lessons our forefathers bought at such price, the party does not deserve to continue, and will in due time be replaced by one worthy of that precious intellectual and moral heritage.

The series has much to recommend it... this is a good starting point.

Reality check
Too many Republicans really and truly believe that the reason they lost was because the party was not conservative enough. So I guess that explains why people voted for the most Liberal guy in the Senate intead? Yeah, right.

And for the lat 2 years, the GOP has been snickering about the fact that the Democrat controlled Congress had lower approval ratings than Bush. So what did the American voters do? They elected even more Democrats this time around.

You people are seriously out of touch with reality. Dems have the young voters, the Blacks, the Hispanics and the women. The GOP has the old white male vote locked up but thats it. Unless there is an influx of old white males from around the globe, things won't get any better.

Obama will appoint a lot of moderate Rebulicans to his team and will govern from the middle - at least for his first term. And George W.Bush will hang around the neck of the Republican party like an albatross for many, many years. 95% of the regulars here supported W. - so now it's time to grow a set, act like men and live with the consequences.

Two Years
I figure it should take two years of King O policies to convince Americans, particularly those who thought they were Punishing the Republicans by cutting off the branch they were sitting on, to wake up and realize that government is not an intellectual exercise, but a real life scenario.

The only good thing that will come of this disaster is that it will finally end the Age of Aquarius as people see what Tom Haydens Manifesto looks like in their faces.

See you in two years. Meanwhile my address will be Galts Gulch.

Hosecuervo
Your logic is nonsense.

This election had nothing to do with how far left or right the candidates were.

It had nothing to do with message. Obama had no message. He had slogans: hope and change.

It had EVERYTHING to do with the perception of many the Dem would be better in fixing the economy - the GIFT given to Obama courtesy of the September Surprise.

McCain was leading until that hit.

You all cannot have a GIFT like that every election. The Republican message wins - as proved by the fact since our last entry into the "wilderness years", after the loss in the '64 LBJ landslide (a true landslide; Obama did not have a landslide), we have WON 7 of 10.

I hope your leaders are going to be as over-confident as the stupid libs posting here in TH.

Thank you for your support Hose!

"When FDR became pres., there was NO national debt, NO deficit, NO unfunded $59 trillion Soc. Sec.-Medicare obligations."

Actually, in June 1933 the national debt was 22,538,672,560.15 gold-backed dollars. The deficit in 1932 was $2,885,000,000 There was also a 25% rate of unemployment and the collapse of the banking system.

Thomas: How can the country commit treason? Treason is giving aid and comfort to the enemy, and the people get to decide who that enemy is.

WHISTLING PAST THE GRAVEYARD
Absent a catastrophe the Republicans will never win another national elections, and who wants a catastrophe? With about 40% of voters no longer paying any federal income tax, do you expect them to kill the Democrat goose which lays the golden eggs? This means that the Reps will need to get over 80% of the remaining 60% tax paying voters, which is close to being an unachievable goal. This doesn't mean that the Reps will not continue to win local and state elections where the Ants substantially outnumber the Grasshoppers. In Aesop's fable, the Ants refused to give the partying Grasshoppers any of the hardworking Ant's production. Today the government requires the Ants to part with their hard earned property, and to give it to the Grasshoppers by means of spread the wealth through taxation. I hate to say it, but if I was young I would be looking for a new country, although I admit I don't know where I would find a suitable country anywhere on this planet.

Raj
you are so wrong. I won't muster any further effort in reply your point is so wrong.

Was just thinking....will 'mokin cigs in a Federal building, the White House, be repealed now that we have a cig 'moker in the White House?

What's Obama going to do, walk out to the colonnade for smoke breaks?

Two Years Republicans Storm Back
Catastrophe is on its way. There is even the possibility of a coup if nukes go off. Silly Democrats, there is a God and the end game is about to begin.

REED
I agree with you. In two years of Dhimmicrat rule, when that 95% redistributionist "tax cut" coupled with tax increases on the "wealthy" and small business (sure to come) cause Carteresque inflation and unemployment, the "wilderness" phase will be over if Republicans can articulate a traditional program of tax cutting and controlling spending to solve a rising misery index.

Reduced spending
Republicans continually speak of 'reducing the cost of government'. But this seriously misses the point. Return to government LIMITED by the Constitution is what must be proclaimed and lived. Our government's spending outrageously can be directly traced to extra-constitutional endeavors either to gain votes, or to 'mold' society. The first order of business should be to show how our alphabet soup of government agencies absorb our taxes and distort or society.

As pointed out in speeches on the floor of the Congress by Rep. Ron Paul, their is NO constitutional authority, for example, of Foreign Aid, conduct of war not directly authorized, and supported, by Congress, not to mention the, EPA, OSHA, Dep of ED, etc. These are all issues best approached and handled at the LOWEST level of government, i.e. Counties with mines should control safety for THEIR citizens, Schools should be governed by those who's children attend them not a bureaucrat or judge located remotely.

Until Republicans and independents understand and function on this level, our government, our freedom, our liberty will slowly dissolve into a violent anarchy. GOD SAVE AMERICA, AMEN.

The Democrats will overreach...
They always, always do. They misread the electorate. They think that since they won an election America wants to go from free market capitalism to Soviet Stalinism overnight. They think Americans are sick of conservative traditionalism like the crazy concept that marriage is between a man and a woman, and the meme that a man should be able to keep most of what he earns. I think Dems actually think that Americans believe our taxes should be higher for the common good. And I'm positive that Democrats think your average American lays awake at night fretting about whether the rest of the world might hate us. Dems and liberals think that voters gave them carte blanche to eviserate our military, shut down those "nasty" conservative talk shows, and give unions the power they so richly deserve and which they haven't had for the last 70 years. And Democrats I think are convinced that average Americans are pining away for the company of millions of illegal aliens in their community and are wistfully hoping their Messiah will grant these leeches, I mean, individuals amnesty. It's a mandate, after all! Oh, sonny Jim, the overreaching is going to be breathtaking...and the voters will show the Dems in 2010 just how "pleased" they are with their new overlords...gonna be awesome!!

There is NO hope
...for saving the Republican Party. After years of excessive spending, erosion of basic rights, nation-building, and a constant subversion of the Constitution, anyone who still thinks the Republican Party is conservative needs a "check-up from the neck-up"!

The only political party which espouses conservative values is the Libertarian Party. Do some research before you dismiss third parties and don't be fooled by the Republicans again!

Smartest Option: Emigrate from the USA
Both the anti-American GOP and Democratic Parties of Corporate PC whores in DC will illegally grant Amnesty soon in a matter of months to millions of Illegal Alien Criminals. This will be the official death knoll for Conservatism for years to come. With this apostate Socialist government in DC now officially no longer representing Conservative Americans whatsoever, it is time we Conservatives started thinking waaaayyy outside the box about making the ultimate voter protest: with our feet and our money. Our forefathers left tyranny, insanity, oppression, corruption, persecution, no economic opportunity, and dysfunctional government for a better life elsewhere. This is a perfectly normal thing to do when a government and a people have lost its mind. I believe gradually in time we will see more and more Conservative Americans apply for emigration & citizenship elsewhere. Conservatism will never come about again until America is brought to her knees, and this will be a very painful process. God's Judgments on America are already just beginning, but they will get MUCH WORSE! Our biblically illiterate idiots in both parties have divided the land of Israel which God has strictly warned against in His Bible with serious consequences. At this stage of the game, Liberals are pandemic in every aspect of society from the church to the kindergarten, from the college classroom to the CEO's boardroom, and at every level and echelon of government bureaucracy in DC.

Emigration - Cont'd...
I'm telling you, People: Short of an act of Almighty God, we have a dauntingly impossible task of reclaiming the culture and the politics. Socialism and the Welfare State are about to be released at a force heretofore unrecognized in this country. The first thingthey will do very shortly is the Global Poverty Act. It has passed the House and Biden's Senate Committee on a VOICE VOTE ALREADY, and we all know what those Liberal GOP nutjobs in the Senate will do!!!! This legislation will create a PERMANENT 7% GDP tax that will go directly to the UN every year to pay ostensibly for "world poverty". We all know that money will go to support and grow Communist and Muslim dictatorships in the Congo and elsewhere. The tax for this year alone will be $840 BILLION DOLLARS of your taxpayer money. Now that's what I call some serious "change"!!! The insanity of DC boggles the mind and defies reason. DC is now officially "D.emocrat C.ity" a.k.a. the "D.istrict of C.riminals." I do not have enough faith that our State leaders in Conservative States will have enough sense to divorce themselves from this Union of Fools that no longer even honors its agreement with the States known as the US Constitution. This USSR, United States Socialist Republic, in DC now threatens our very survival as a nation. The only viable option short of Secession is Emigration. The government in DC is NOT the government OUR STATES agreed to join when they signed the Constitution many years ago. It's time to go!
