Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

If Barack Obama winds up losing the election this November, most likely a significant portion of the blame will affix to his selection of a running mate.  The issue will not have much of anything to do with Senator Joe Biden’s personality or performance.  It will simply be a case of “what might have been” if Hillary Rodham Clinton had been placed on the ticket.

John McCain’s choice of Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate has further-fueled speculation and discussion about this.

In fact, the man who would be John F. Kennedy, who has sought the Camelot mantle and basked in déjà vu images of a time that never really was, has for the first time in his once-quixotic campaign departed from the script.  JFK would have made the tough and pragmatic choice, against the advice of those closest to him – particularly brother Bobby.   He would have chosen Clinton.  In fact, he did choose “his” Hillary – a man named Lyndon.

It remains for the story to fully unfold, and for journalists and historians to research and write about the behind the scenes machinations leading to the Biden selection and, more importantly, the Clinton rejection.  But I suspect that we will come to learn about strong feelings generated by the deep wounds inflicted during fierce political battle.

The whole image of all things Kennedy clearly resonates with the Democratic standard bearer.  He has laboriously cultivated a calculated political resemblance.  But there are many compelling distinctions between Barack and Jack, not the least of which are fundamental differences in temperament and personality.

Kennedy was not only cool – he was cold.  He could turn the charm on when necessary – and did so with unparalleled effectiveness – but his default mode was to be detached and aloof.   As Seymour Hersh wrote in The Dark Side of Camelot, the public-at-large was enamored of Jack’s “charm and style,” but most “would see very little of the real John F. Kennedy, and would never fully sense the Kennedy cynicism and toughness.”

It is, of course, a very good thing that Mr. Obama has a demonstrable capacity for closeness to others, as is clearly apparent with his marriage and family (another contrast with JFK).  And this suggests that when people close to him feel strongly, he can and will be influenced.

In other words, some in his inner circle have never gotten over what Bill and Hillary Clinton said and did during the primary campaign.  It is that simple.

JFK’s brother and campaign manager Bobby despised Lyndon Johnson – and was distraught when Jack tapped him for Vice President.  One wonders - how did Michelle Obama (Barack’s “Bobby”) feel and express herself about the whole “should Hillary be on the ticket” subject?   A while back, in an appearance on that wonderfully erudite television show The View, Mrs. Obama seemed to distance herself from the process saying, “I am just glad I am not involved in that decision.”  Really?  It is really hard to envision such an otherwise fully immersed life partner not being privy to those discussions.

John F. Kennedy went against the advice of his closest advisors when he chose Lyndon Baines Johnson to run with him.  It was a marriage of calculated political convenience.   It was not about “chemistry” or compatibility.   It was a shrewd and pragmatic decision based on the bottom line: who would best help the ticket in November.

The twelve-hour period in Los Angeles during the night of July 13-14, 1960, as Mr. Kennedy pondered his running mate options, was one of the most interesting moments in the history of presidential electoral politics.   Having captured the nomination on the first ballot with 806 votes (761 required to win), he had beaten back a late-hour challenge by Johnson, the powerful Senate Majority Leader from Texas.   Though LBJ had only “officially” announced his candidacy a few days before the convention, he had been orchestrating a stealth campaign for many months.  When the roll was called, he received 409 votes – a strong second, considering his late entry.

The Kennedy-Johnson battle of July 1960 may have been brief, but it was very brutal.   The Texan tore into Jack using everything he could think of to sway convention delegates.  He talked about Kennedy’s health and the rumors of Addison’s disease (potentially fatal).   He railed against JFK’s youth, regularly referring to him as a “forty-two year old kid” (he was actually forty-three).   He even brought up old family history declaring that in the Second World War: “I wasn’t any Chamberlain-umbrella policy man, I never thought Hitler was right.”  This was, of course, a reference to Kennedy’s father, Joseph P. Kennedy, who had been the U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James in Great Britain in the late 1930s.  His views on appeasement and Hitler led to his recall by President Roosevelt.

The gloves were off.

By the way, part of John F. Kennedy’s detached aloofness was evident in the way he could deflect personal attacks with humor.  In fact, at a hastily arranged televised “debate” before a joint meeting of Massachusetts and Texas delegates just the day prior to his nomination, he listened to Johnson’s tirade.  But when his turn to talk came, he chose only to speak about how much he admired LBJ and how he supported him for Majority Leader in the Senate.

It was the triumph of cool.  That capacity is actually what made it possible for Kennedy to choose Johnson, against the advice of a host of soon-to-be New Frontier characters.

Lyndon Johnson surprised many by accepting the number-two spot on the ticket.   Just why he would give up a clearly more powerful position in the senate to take a job that had been long-referred to as “not worth a bucket of warm spit,” puzzled many close to him.   Possibly the greatest influence on him was then Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, LBJ’s long-time mentor.   Mister Sam, as he was affectionately known by friends, had been opposed to the idea of Lyndon running as VP, but overnight changed his mind declaring: “I’m a damn sight smarter than I was last night.”

Interestingly, one clue as to what Johnson was thinking is left to us in a biography of Clare Booth Luce, former congresswoman and one time U.S. Ambassador to Italy, written by Ralph G. Martin.  The book describes a conversation between Lyndon Johnson and Mrs. Luce shortly after the inauguration on January 20, 1961 – in fact while the two were riding together en route to the inaugural ball.  Having been asked why he accepted the Vice Presidential nomination the previous July, LBJ told her:

“Clare, I looked it up; one out of every four presidents has died in office.  I’m a gamblin’ man darlin’, and this is the only chance I got.”

So the Kennedy-Johnson partnership was born of, and driven by, political cynicism.  It was only possible in an environment where naked ambition trumped personal feelings of animosity, suspicion, and hurt.

Mr. Obama chose not to go down that path when he passed over Hillary Clinton in favor of Joseph Biden.  Because he and those around him are still licking their wounds, he chose the safe-bet over the slam-dunk.   In doing so, he stepped out of predictable Kennedy-esque character in a way not yet seen in this campaign.

If he loses in November, he may very well be remembered as a John F. Kennedy wannabe who couldn’t really pull the cynical trigger.  And maybe that would be best for all of us.

Obama's Gutless Choice.
We must always remember that Obama, unlike JFK, never had a strong male role model in his life. He is a thoroughly feminized man. This explains so much about him - including his reluctance to once again be subject to the rule of a very strong female. As obnoxious as LBJ was, he knew his place. He never challenged JFK directly or in public. It's misleading to compare the LBJ choice to the Clintons. The Hill-Bill team would turn Obama into their White House valet.

If Obama loses...
He may still get to the Whitehouse...I hear there is a lawnjockey position open.

Un-JFK all the way!
The history I have read suggests that JFK was more surprised than anyone that LBJ accepted it, and had only offered it as a peace-making gesture. His admiration of LBJ was limited. He referred to him as 'Landslide' because of the narrow margin of his first election to Congress. Personally, he didn't like him.

I doubt that even JFK would have extended the VP as olive branch to the Clintons, pragmatic or no. They are that disgusting.

Obama had stronger picks in Bayh & Sam Nunn. His choice of Biden was just dumb, indicative of a deeper problem. Still, the country owes him big-time for taking out the Clintons. With some luck, they won't be back.

Another possibilty
"But I suspect that we will come to learn about strong feelings generated by the deep wounds inflicted during fierce political battle."

Mr. Stokes surely considered another possibility but decided to ignore it, namely that Obama (and perhaps even his party bosses) didn't want those two criminals back in the White House.

Pragmatic party bosses
It wasn't perhaps Obama who tossed Hillary under the bus, but rather the democrat party bosses. In March and April they organized the trickle and then flood of superdelegate announcements for Obama, and they had Obama nominated in spite of the poll figures which clearly indicated that he is already in trouble.

I think that they, motivated not by moral objections but by practical considerations, decided that the Clintons are too much of a burden to bear. Bush (who by the way turned out to be a very good president) was elected in 2000 mainly because the electorate reacted against the Clintons. Facing the prospect of another 8 to 16 years of Republican presidents, they did what they had to do.

In short
the democrat bosses wrote off this election and speculated on 2012, factoring in McCain's age. But then along came Palin. Now they are gnashing their teeth as they begin to glimpse the consequences of putting the two thugs (2 for 1 in their own words) into into the White House in 1992.

PS
I wonder who amongst you really believes that the Republican party bosses hadn't picked Palin months ago.

Democratic Downfall
I may be wrong, but didn' the Kennedy's lose stature while in the White House? I have always believed that LBJ was behind the assassination. Maybe this is what Obama feared via Hillary. The Clinton's have also earned a lowly reputation due to their questionable behaviors. Didn't 37 of their associates bear the brunt of the Clinton's? The last place any democrat belongs is in the White House. The Kennedy's won the election because of all the dead people who voted for them. Bill Clinton took $10,000,000 from Arafat when he left office (after allowing 400,000 Muslims into our country) and now we have Obama claiming to be a patriot when all writings about him say otherwise. He even claimed, indirectly, to favor marxism during his speech in Germany. I am disgusted with those who think they can steer the American public through lies and deceit. Hillary was kept out of office by those who know what the Clinton's really represent. Wouldn't it be a perfect world if the public was privy to the truth. I never trust anyone who professes to help the poor.

Various
Mr. Garrison: Your post is in exceedingly bad taste.

PB: Obama's a Leftist who thinks that life begins at birth unless it's inconvenient. But he did take the Clintons, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson down a notch. I hesitate so say that he took any of them _out_. They're all extraordinarily resilient thugs. So he deserves at two cheers.

Diane: Obama's not a complete moron. He knows that if he had put Hillary on the ticket, he would be utterly unable to keep a lid on her or Bill. Moreover, there's enough concern about Johnson's involvement in Kennedy's death -- and about the large number of casualties in Team Clinton -- to give any presidential candidate pause. Evidently Obama wasn't eager to watch his back every second for four years (or eight).

Communist Goals for America 1963

I have the 45 goals the Communists have for America, that was read into the Congressional Record in 1963. You will be amazed at how the Communists have succeeded by 2008 - 45 years later. I have listed five (5) examples
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963
Current Communist Goals EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Thursday, January 10, 1963 .

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Communist Goals
Retired Geek, and it is only going to get worse because the snowball is gaining speed and mass. It will take a massive effort by true American patriots to reverse the damage that has already been done, particularily in the education system which includes the secondary schools and the colleges and universities.

There was a recent movie about the idiots in the future, I think 2520, or somewhere in that range. At the rate we are going it will be by 2100. God help the USA

The quote from LBJ
about how many presidents die in office is trenchant. In fact, it may very well be why Obama did not choose Clinton, although the rioting that would follow such a mysterious death (and that is the way all the Clinton cronies who have died have been characterized) might actually warm his heart.

Biden may actually be the only one who accepted his invitation. Maybe the other guys still have ambitions that they do not want tied to Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers....

Come on Mr. Garrison,
let's show a bit more class than that. I disagree with the Obamessiah on pretty much every issue, but let's fight him on THOSE grounds, not in any way that's even more easily attacked as 'racist' than simply disagreeing with him.

PB
Here in Texas, we have always referred to "Landslide" Lyndon. The reference is to more than just a narrow victory. The Duke of Duval (County) delivered Lyndons victory by 13 votes, if I remember. There was a demand for a recount, but the ballot box disappeared. And I don't think very many Texans like him today.

JFK
Funny thing to me is that the true JFK was much closer ideologically to the RINOs of this age than to the overwhelming numbers of Democrats, including Barry. JFK would be laughing over these pained comparison of Barry to him.
The simply fact is that Teddy has never represented the ideology of his brothers; after their deaths, Teddy had a hate on for this country he blamed for their deaths, and he has done everything he has been able to do to destroy the USA JFK, and Bobby, loved out of base vengeance.

LBJ and JFK
Very interesting article.Since I was only 9 years old when JFK was killed, I don't remember a lot that happened during the election process. So, this was some very interesting insight. And as PB said in his comment, a lot of Texans don't like LBJ. In fact, many of them think that LBJ had something to do with JFK's death. And his comment to Clare Luce might support that claim. (As a side note, my father voted a straight Democratic all his life until LBJ ran in 1964. That year he voted for a Republican for the first time in his life.)

There is another point where JFK and Obama differ as well. When JFK was faced with a crisis with the then-USSR, he used his cool demeanor to make them back off. He stood down the Russians when they were putting missiles into Cuba. Obama would never have gone as far as JFK did, and the world would be a lot different today if JFK had not stood his ground.

I really like your ending comment about Ted Kennedy. That pretty well sums up what he has done. He was never the man either of his brothers were, and I just cringe when people compare him to either of his brothers.

Lyndon Johnson
After reading the quote about presidents dieing in office I feel m ore strongly than ever that LBJ has JFK killed.

There was a streong rumor that JFK was goig to drop LBJ from the VP position for the
re-election.

I believe the Clintons as are as viled as LBJ as well.

Bubba: LBJ---->JFK
Bubba, you took the words right out my mouth. To be fair to Nobama I don't think he wanted the Clintons to do to him, perhaps while campaigning in Arkansas or NY a few years hence, what LBJ did to JFK. I'm not a conspircacy nut, I think Oliver Stone's an idiot, but...well, you remember the play MacBird? I think they got it right way back when.

What has he done? What has he run?
Joe Biden is running dog lackey of Pelosi/Reed. B.H.O. is no reformer – he’s a gangster-style, old school Chicago hack. B.H.O. is not “The One” – he is by calculative composition a champion of his master’s agenda (Unions, Planned Parenthood, and Mr. Soros et al). B.H.O. will change our capitalist country into one, big union shop run by the Democrats; bent towards the left so far that his socialist European friends will recognize him for the Communist at heart he really is.
I do not fear him; I loathe him for the holocaust of the Unborn (and in some cases the Born) he so adamantly supports. I do not think is name is funny; I think his name speaks defiantly of his family’s murderous, African-Muslim roots.
The more his candidacy is vetted, the more we learn about the puppet-masters behind the scrim of the burka. The G.O.P. will have enormous crossover votes because we love to win, believe our country is the best the world has ever seen, and mightily disapprove of American apologists. We will elect McCain because he actually will put the country first – and has the alarming record of cavorting with Democrats to prove it. John may not have led the perfect, conservative life but no one has, eh? McCain’s life is an open book and Obama’s is shrouded in mystery, deceit, and dope.
McCain/Palin 2008; see you at the polls!

BHO=JFK?
If I remember correctly, didn't JFK tell us to ask not what our country could do for us, but ask what we could do for our country? I believe BHO's acceptance speech did the exact opposite by telling us all that he will have the country do everything for us. I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone point this out. Maybe I just missed it.

I've studied JFK in school
All I can sy is if by "JFK" you mean John Francois Kerry, then Obama is very much like "JFK." A communist sympathizer who will betray his country(and in Kerry's case his fellow military people) at every opportunity he gets.

If you mean John Fitzgerald Kennedy, then comparing Barack Obama to "JKF" is to dishonor the memory of Kennedy to the utmost extreme possible.
President Kennedy had his faults, but taxing working people into poverty to give that money to those who refuse to work, and selling his country out to our enenies weren't, and never would have been among them.

Would JFK Agree w/Obama On Abortion?
Somehow, I truly doubt JFK would agree with Obama's extreme position on abortion and on the children who stubbornly survive an abortion.

I don't think JFK would approve of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, either.

To any...
... who might be holding onto some conspiracy theory about the JFK assassination, I would recommend "Case Closed" by Gerald Posner.

JFK
WHO CARES ABOUT WHAT JFK WOULD THINK ABOUT OOBBAAMMAA.I THINK IT IS SAD THAT AMERICANS COMPARE THIS MAN TO JFK.THEY HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON IN ANY DIRECTION.I DIT LIKE JFK AS A PERSON AND PRESIDENT,BUT HE WAS THE SAME AS CLINTON IN THE WAY OF SEX.BUT THIS IS OKAY,BECAUSE THIS IS NORMAL FOR A MAN.BUT IN THERE POSITION THEY SHOULD ONLY LOOK AND EAT AT HOME.AT LEAST McCAIN IS OLD ENOUGHT NOT TO BE SO FOOLISH.

BHO-JFK Oxymoron
JFK's run for prez was the first time I ever paid attention to politics. By golly, I idolized JFK. The biggest arguments I had on his behalf (I was undergraduate student at Texas Tech) concerned his Catholicism.

I was thrilled, and almost worshipped him, when he stood against Krushchev over the Cuban Missle Crises.

I was disillusioned over his betrayal of the Bay of Pigs, but devastated when he was assinated.

Since then, I have learned a lot about him!!!

JFK had "experience". He traveled/lived with his ambassador dad, sat in on international meetings, etc.

What has BHO done, other than campaign for POTUS in a variety of countries?

Diane -Democratic Downfall
"I have always believed ..."

Two things:

1. Remember when they showed newsreels at movies? I was at a movie on Sun. afternoon after Fri. assassination, and four shots were heard (boom boom-boom boom). That newsreel disappeared, and the Warren commission ...

2. (I) asked the question: "Who benefits from a coup de tat (SP)? The ONLY person who benefitted was LBJ. Couple that with the Kennedy brothers plan to dump LBJ, and ...

Like you, I have always believed LBJ was involved.

OBAMA IS MENTALLY ILL
Cape Conservative posted this:

"How he had the "audacity" to put himself in the "temple" just shows it is all about Barack, nothing more! Wonder why he didn't have his grandmother on stage with him to celebrate this spectacular achievement - one, that without his grandparents' help, would never have made!"

You got it Cape. Obama is the Supreme Narcissist. He will never allow anybody to share the Spot Light or The Camera's Flash with The Messiah. This particular Mental Illness is accompanied with Delusions of Grandeur.

A Narcissist is totally in Love With Self, and cares nothing for anything or anybody else.

A Sociopath has No Conscience and can Lie and never make a ripple on a Polygraph Machine.

This particular character trait is almost always found in Serial Killers. Narcissism coupled with the fact that he is Sociopathic, makes him the most dangerous man in America today. If he were just a regular stooge in the U.S. Senate or Illinois state senate, you could ignore his mental illnesses and his ignorance, but just the fact that he has even been elevated to the status as Candidate for the presidency, is very dangerous for this country.

Obama was handpicked by his Communist Handlers for this time in history, and the Communists in the Democrat Party handpicked this Puppet because they Know he Knows Nothing, and as long as they Allow Him The Spotlight, that he will do and say anything they, The Democrat Communists Tell Him To Say and Do.

We have to make certain that this Sociopathic Narcissist never has an opportunity to mis-represent this country as POTUS. Get Out The Vote and Vote No To Obama and Vote No to Any Body that Supports him Locally, in your State, and at the Federal Level of government.

We have to clean up our country by ridding our system of Liberals and then Abolishing All The Laws and Agencies of Government that They Created. We are a Republic, Not A Communist Welfare State.

No-win VP choice for O
During the Clinton’s climb to political power and attempts to stay there, a great many people who opposed them in some way or threatened their plans mysteriously decided to commit suicide, seemingly without reason and sometimes in most unusual ways. One suicide shot himself in the back of the head…twice.

One cannot imagine that O is unaware of these facts about Hillary. Anyone who has seen “The Clinton Chronicles” knows the facts. Had he chosen her as his VP candidate, he would have been standing between her and the presidency she so vigorously covets for herself. And that, my friends, is a highly dangerous if not fatal place to be.

So, I believe that O was finally faced with a potentially no-win choice. He could choose Hillary and risk becoming a tragic suicide, or choose someone else and hope that McCain would shoot himself in the foot by choosing his VP candidate foolishly. O wisely chose to continue to live, but has now almost certainly lost the election because McCain chose an astonishingly excellent VP, Sarah Palin. The Republic is saved and God applauds from heaven.
