Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Barack Obama’s choice to involve Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late president, as part of a three-person team leading his search for a running mate is another not-so-subtle example of his very real desire to be seen as the present-day embodiment of Camelot. It may turn out to be a very effective strategy in a day and age when style and image trump just about everything else. His repeated vow to change this country, with its non-specific resemblance to JFK’s 1960 rhetorical promise to “get America moving again,” seems to resonate with crowds.

Change what? Move where? Such messages tend to resonate with people who are disaffected, and the hearer is free to insert his or her own hopes and fears into the narrative.

A closer look at Mr. Obama, however, will reveal that he actually seems to bear a closer resemblance to JFK’s younger brother Bobby, who was tragically murdered forty years ago this week in a moment of violent insanity.

Robert Kennedy’s late entry into the already rambunctious 1968 presidential campaign in mid-March that year sent shock waves through the political world. Richard Nixon was in Portland, Oregon on March 16th as he watched the New York Senator’s candidacy announcement. Already well on his way to the Republican nomination a few months later, he was facing the fact that he might indeed find himself running against the brother of the slain president who had beaten him eight years before. He told an aide as he watched, “very terrible forces have been unleashed. Something bad is going to come of this. God knows where this is going to lead.” Nixon understood something about politics, people, and the political milieu of the moment.

There arose a legend in the aftermath of Bobby’s death - one similar to what was conjured up following his brother’s assassination five years earlier. As the story goes, everything would have been different had he lived and been elected president. That’s certainly an understandable sentiment from those who loved and followed him – but as with most martyr-driven myths, it’s unrealistic. He probably wouldn’t even have won the nomination that August.

The fact, though, that so many hopes and dreams were projected onto a forty-two year old politician, who had little of the obvious charisma of his famous sibling, is a reminder that faith (as in believing in something or someone intensely) is a powerful dynamic when released politically.

Barack Obama, for what it’s worth and for whatever reason, seems to be tapping into that mysterious force. Many seem to be willing to ignore actual issues because they see in the young man from Illinois a non-specific inspirational quality. For example, many Catholics overlook his radical stand on abortion – as do many younger Evangelicals – in a way they never would with mere mortal candidates.

Georgetown University history professor Michael Kazin defines populism as: “a language whose speakers conceive of ordinary people as a noble assemblage not bounded narrowly by class, view their elite opponents as self-serving and undemocratic, and seek to mobilize the former against the latter.”

He also suggests in his book, The Populist Persuasion: An American History, that populism is “more an impulse than an ideology.”

This explains candidacies that seem to transcend the race for a particular office and become, in fact, movements. That’s what was happening in 1968 with Robert Kennedy and it’s happening these days, for better or for worse, with Barack Obama.

Those of us old enough to remember those days have vivid memories of Robert Kennedy’s funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, complete with an eloquent and moving eulogy by Ted Kennedy. And we remember that train traveling more than 200 miles from New York City to Washington, D.C. where Bobby would be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Evan Thomas, in his book: Robert Kennedy: His Life, wrote:

“As they had for Lincoln, many thousands – perhaps, for RFK, a million people – lined the tracks. The coffin, on a bier close to the floor of the observation car, could not be seen by bystanders. So Kennedy’s pallbearers lifted it up and placed it, a bit precariously, on chairs. Along the route of the train, Boy Scouts and firemen braced at attention; nuns, some wearing dark glasses, stood witness; housewives wept.”

The comparison is often made between RFK’s final trip and another one 103 years before involving slain president Abraham Lincoln. However, often overlooked is one other rail journey bearing the body of a fallen populist hero. That funeral train actually makes a better comparison to the Kennedy story.

The date is July 29, 1925 and a train leaves tiny Dayton, Tennessee. It bears the body of William Jennings Bryan – the populist and pacifist three-time Democratic presidential nominee. He died in his sleep on a Sunday afternoon a few days after the ending of his Scopes trial showdown with Clarence Darrow.

Though he had chronically fallen short of the presidency, he along the way earned the lasting loyalty and deep affection of a vast following of regular everyday people across the country. These common people felt that he was one of them and somehow, somewhere along the way, the unofficial title of “The Great Commoner” permanently attached itself to him.

During the previous five years the nation had mourned several fallen leaders: Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding, and Woodrow Wilson. But those presidential state funerals fell short of the everyday glory surrounding Bryan’s semi-divine passing. As the special train made its way from town to town in Tennessee and Virginia on its way to the nation’s capital, it was met along the way by grieving throngs - people who personally identified with Bryan. What these largely rural Americans had in common with him was more than political affinity, it was deeper – something quite spiritual.

People came from miles around to rail stations in Tennessee towns like Garysville, Coulterville, Melville, Hixon, and Boyce, en route to Chattanooga - and Cleveland, Athens, and Sweetwater, beyond - all just to catch a glimpse of the flag-draped, bronze coffin. They took off their hats and bowed their heads.

When the train arrived at Knoxville shortly after 2:30 in the afternoon there were more than ten thousand people waiting at the station, and the decision was made to extend the planned stop there by twenty minutes to give the crowd time to process it all.

When they reached the next station, in Jefferson City, four young men, students at Carson-Newman College, climbed on a pile of railroad ties and sang a hymn.

The widow, Mary Baird Bryan, who was largely confined to a wheelchair due to severe arthritis, was deeply moved by the crowds she saw at each stop and “appreciated the sympathy” of those who came to pay their respects.

As night fell, the train crossed into Virginia stopping first at Bristol and then Lynchburg. At 2:15 a.m., Bryan’s daughter, Ruth Owen, was amazed to see a great crowd had gathered. She “ordered the doors of the funeral car opened so the crowd might pass through.” A few hundred made it through, but the train began to move on after ten brief minutes, disappointing hundreds of other mourners.

The journey ended with the train’s arrival in Washington, D.C. shortly before 8:00 a.m. on the 30th. It was met by hundreds of railroad employees who removed their hats in respect.

The next day, the funeral service at the church of the Presidents, New York Avenue Presbyterian, in Washington, D.C., was broadcast live across the country by radio for millions of Bryan’s fellow-citizens to hear. Then the bronze coffin was carried through the capital city and across the Potomac toward Arlington Cemetery. There “they laid the great pacifist to rest among the bodies of soldiers.” Flags flew at half mast across the country.

Barack Obama wants to claim the mantle of John Kennedy. But his candidacy is more like that of Robert Kennedy – with a little William Jennings Bryan in there somewhere. The issues today are not those of forty or a hundred years ago, but the “impulse” is very much in evidence. Political boundary markers are being obscured by a populist fog and redefined faster than pundits and other cultural surveyors can chart.

Obama is, in fact, a very effective populist – probably the most skillful one to come along in decades. That he gets so many to abandon or suspend long-held positions on this or that because he inspires them is quite impressive.

And not a little scary.

I find it quite scary
First of all I am not sure what the author is trying to say here. I agree that Obama is hypnotic in some ways, but are we all so busy or uninterested in researching his background that we just stand there dumbstruck with our mouths open.

The facts are many that Barack Obama is not the gentle populist some want to think. He has lied several times in relation to his PACs, his earmarks, his special interest groups, his relations with Reszko, his relationships with Wright and Pfleuger, his record in the Senate where he usually caved into big business requirements. I could appreciate Obama if he weren't a hypocrite pretending to take the high road.

It's hard for me to think of voting for someone who I am sure will manipulate the truth to fit his personal purposes. The hardest part is that I think he believes his own lies.

Populist? I call him a "Con Artist"
Smart people can see through Obamba.

JUST SAY "NO" TO "O"

IT'S RAINING MCCAIN HALLELUIAH!

Column repeats
The last paragraph is repeated.

RFK's Assassination
The Obama campaign and the mainstream media pounced on Hillary for even bringing up the subject of Bobby Kennedy's assassination when she used it in a time line discussion, charging that she was "suggesting" the assassination of Barack Obama, yet there are TV programs at CNN featuring his assassination not two weeks later by the very same talking heads who charged that she was cruelly "suggesting" Obama's same fate. The press again shows that it did what it had to do to make sure Obama was the nominee. This is the same mainstream media who was so in ah of George W. Bush that they didn't ask the hard questions about going into Iraq. Now, they are so in ah of Barack Obama, they aren't asking the hard questions of him either. We need a free press, but we need unbiased reporting. I have had my fill of the Campbell Brown's and Chris Mathew's type people who get tingles running up and down their legs. We need real, serious journalists who treat everyone with respect, but get to the hard questions. And the key word here is "EVERYONE", not just Hillary Clinton.

Obama - Populist?
I understand David Stokes' intent with this offering. The comparison to William Jennings Bryan, however falls short. Bryan really believed in his philosophy. He lived it. From the vantage point of my 81 yrs. I feel qualified in evaluating today's youth. His is the rhetoric that has appealed to young people of every generation. Obama has a way of presenting "pie-in-the-sky" as a practical, obtainable nirvana. Like most young people, his followers have not experienced the reality of how government operates or where the funds come from to fund all the wonderful "I will give you..." promises. Without the tax base of the common worker, there is no government money. Mr. Obama talks pretty, he is young, he projects a youthful hope ... he is very charismatic - and he is also either truly naive or deliberately deceptive. The child's nursery rhyme comes to mind, "Come into my parlor said the spider to the fly."

JFK and RFK
In January 1962, I went to work for RFK at the DOJ as a young attorney fresh out of law school.

Indeed he had the charisma that was equal to or greater than JFK's, but it was for personal relationships, not public ones. Those who knew him knew that JFK was the public snake charmer, but RFK was the guy who knew the policy and could change his mind with logical persuasion every time.

People listened to Bobby when the chips were down, for example, the Cuban Missile Crises. That only happened because Kruschev correctly measured JFK as lacking the fortitude to face up to him; he had not experienced the steel nerves and mind of Bobby.

I'm a Republican, but I would have followed Bobby anywhere, and lots of others would have, too. If he had been someone else's brother, he would have been President, and a good one. But Joe Kennedy decided that it was Jack's turn first, and that was that.

Sirhan Sirhan...
...Bobby's assasin,is still imprisoned on McNeil Island Federal prison in Puget Sound,Washington State.Every once in a while he is intervued on TV.

Understanding Politicians
All politicians want something that belongs to someone else. Saving the world. Change. Change for the better. Hocus pocus. It is one thing to get half crocked and start mooning over someone but to bow and kiss the hand of a politician is beyond belief. For example, referring to Hillary's "final" speech as magnificant and her best is silly. Those aren't her words, they were written by "best" people that money can buy. When she applies her own words it is -- "You know,"... Now that is real talk, as normally comes from a teenager who more than likely will not learn to talk because of a government school education. Her "you know" is a pause in grappling for words, as in cackles. Barak may be an effective populist only because he promises peace, prosperity, happiness, free health care, free oil, middle class free of taxes, free, free, free. That is the single most important advantage over Hillary, and will be over McShame. McShame will continue the program of the CFR.

"...And not a little scary..."
Indeed. It's downright terrifying. Many "if's" linger here, but IF Obama is elected, and IF his ability to conjure up hypnotic fog that suspends reason and rational inquiry continues to be at his command, what of the Cabinet selections approval process in Congress? He already had the media eating out of his hand. Will the newly-elected demagogue get whatever closet radical leftwinger he wants for his inner circle of department heads, ready and willing to do his every bidding? What of judgeships and court appointments....will the ObamaNation fog also suspend reason when these proceedings get underway, as they must? Will he be able to ram tax increases down the throats of Congress and the American public (hereafter to be known as 'sheep')? Will he sit down with President Imadinnerjacket of Iran and negotiate us out of a nuclear standoff, or usher one in with his naiveté and inexperience?
If you've listened to Iran's leader in interviews, you know he's a master of the dodge 'n weave non-answer, and no slouch as a debater, either.
Being naive is no crime nor sin...we are all born that way, and hopefully at some point maturity and experience overwhelm naive and we become reasonably 'worldly' and open-eyed. But to enter the most powerful job in the world as an inexperienced and untested neophyte, when most of the world is gunning for us in one manner or another...that's not forgivable... That's what the Democratic Party wants us to allow Senator Obama to do...'walk onto the world stage like he's the latest contestant on "American Idol." Well, people, I've already heard quite enough of his singing. I'm definitely voting for experience in November - spelled McCAIN.

Another Jim Jones only...
this time a politician, but the kool-aid is just as deadly.

He plays and preys on people's emotions. His good looks and smooth talk and gentle manner belies the man beneath the surface.

Character is reflected in reputation and reputation is earned by the company we keep, where we go and what we do, what we spend our money on and how we treat people we may not agree with.

The following words are an excerpt of his so-called denouncement of his church...

"I'm not denouncing the church and I'm not interested in people who want me to denounce the church... The church has been suffering from the attention my campaign has focused on them... I know it's the right thing to do for the church...."

He denounced nothing.

Your right on the money. And so are those posting here that see the real Obama. He is a pure con man and not even a good one! It is the Mass Liberal media that is doing the work for him.

"And not a little scary." is only the beginning.

(P.S. Goshawk.. I hope you saw my apology.)

Obama is a Media Selection
I am sorry but Barack Obama is a second rate intellect who must follow what is fed him or fall flat on his face. His speeches are without substance and it is impossible to miss the vacillation in his voice and the unmitigated gall of his explanation. I do not see black or white. Color him red.

MoniQue writes: "JUST SAY 'NO' TO 'O'"

Spot on! I've been calling him a modern day Elmer Gantry, but that doesn't even begin to adequately describe B. Hussein Obama.

"Smart people can see through Obamba." I agree that those who see through B. Hussein Obama are smart, but unfortunately not all smart people see through him.. YET!

Our only hope
Is either folks actually listen to what he intends (fat chance) or his speech writers develop writers block.

Obama
voted head of the Law Review at Harvard Law School, not a minor feat for anyone but for a black admit who had no benefit of affirmative action in his contest for the law review since it is a plum desired by all the ambitious students both white and other, this is not a minor accomplishment.
Had the audacity to actually enter the campaign for the Presidency of the US. Not a minor leap since in the early new coverage you can see that even he doesn't think he has a chance. It was most likely originally an attempt at getting more attention or a very plausible shot at a Vice Presidential slot with the Hillary/Bill team.
Major accomplishment of the 2008 campaign so far to bettering the political process in America? Yes, he killed Hillary and Bills chance of getting their hands back on the reigns of power of the US Presidency. For this alone Barack Obama deserves not only a tremendous amount of respect from the populous but our undying thanks. RSVP Bill & Hillary Clinton 2008

It doesn't make any evermind
Our constitution permits a President, through the use of emergency powers, to exercise dictatorial control over the people in response to national emergencies like economic downturns or global warming. This year, we have a choice between a poverty-pimping, race-baiting Marxist and a former sailor who, in the face of his oath not to do so, has successfully assaulted the First Amendment to that constitution, albeit under color of law. One of those, I contend, bids fair to be our next dictator. Take your pick, but personally I think we're better off with McCain.

Disappointing
Barack Obama's associations and track record disqualify him from the highest political post in the free world, yet his followers don't care. Not one of them will logically examine what he has done or for that matter not done and say "he should not be our leader". They will crowd his rallies and listen to his messianic message in the rapt fascination ascribed to fanatical worshippers. No reason required, no logic invoked, only the effervescent babbling of a presidential wannabe matters. Yes, Mr Obama, make it all good for us, you're our god. Nevermind that based on his present associations he is more likely than not to gut our economy and vastly increase the numbers of folks at or below poverty level. Remember that this imbecile wants the UN to receive your hard earned money in the form of a poverty tax. In other words this marxist windbag wants to fund the dictatorships of third world nations with your money!

Politicians rarely deliver on their promises and then only when it furthers their careers or that career is threatened. Geez, when are we going to learn?

Uninformed electorate, you bet, lack of critical thinking skills, absolutely. Once again we get what we deserve. How tremendously disappointing that Americans make choices like this great con artist.

grammshart

What a marxist twit! The messiah of the left continuing the empty promises and meaningless rhetoric the left have blessed us with for so long.

Obama brand of Marxism
Subject: What is the Obama Marxism?
Marxism in its simplest form is 'Class Warfare'.

What has Obama added 'Marxism' + black racism.

Obama Marxism is a mixture of 'class warfare' and 'black separatism theology'.

Obama was not nominated for the Democratic candidate in 'spite' of his peculiar brand of Marxism but 'because' of his brand of Marxisim.

Marxists always divide people into groups and then pit those groups against each other.

Obama is the perfect Democrat leader pitting racists against each other - religions against each other - income classes against each other - genders against each other.

The Democrats now have the 'Perfect Obama Storm' to change America into collectivism.

Traveling medicine show
Obama's the epitome of the old snake oil salesmen. He'll say anything to get into the White House.

Obama's playing short-con. He simply needs to flaunt his eloquent oratory and meaningless platitudes until November and (he thinks) the masses will insert him into office.

McCain was a hero many decades ago. Does he have the right stuff today? Probably not. He can't speak in public (like Bush) and he panders to the left.

If Komrad Obama gets elected, it will be with McCain's inadvertent assistance.

The REAL reason
The REAL reason why Obama has such a great shot at the Presidency, is that Bush has been a failure as a President.

This is 1980 in reverse. In 1980, it was the incumbent Democrat, Carter, with only a 30% approval rating. The public was so disgusted with Carter that they said "Time for a real change" and elected the most conservative candidate in decades--Reagan.

Now it's flipped: Bush is so unpopular that the public is willing to consider electing the most LIBERAL candidate in decades--Obama.

If Bush had been a more successful President, or if there had been an independent conservative voice on Capitol Hill like Gingrich, Obama wouldn't be having a shot.

We conservatives need to look in the mirror and admit to ourselves that we let the country down, that Bush has let the country down, that the GOP has let the country down--and promise the country a fresh start. I doubt we can do that as long as Bush is still in office though.

SteveL
You know, there are things that I haven't agreed with in Bush's administration. However, I am not going to start pounding the same drum that we've been hearing from the left since day one of his election.

Think about his presidency and tell me he hasn't had extraordinary challenges.

1. Florida...he never even got to celebrate his election because of Gore and his Hanging Chad routine

2. Nine months in office and 9/11 happened. The most horrific attack on American Soil since Pearl Harbor. Not Military forces and equipment lost, but civilians with the attendant blow to our economy and psyche

3. The single most devastating hurricane in recent history obliterates New Orleans. Local government drops the ball and he takes the heat for 'mis-management'

4. He went to DC with the idea he could UNITE them. He tried to cooperate across the aisle and look what happened? He got Gridlock. No Judges confirmed. Filibusters etc. etc. etc.

Yes, I agree he has made mistakes. But he has more guts and integrity in his little finger than the current crop of 'leaders' in the Swamp. I don't agree with NCLB, Perscription Drug bill or Amnesty, but I don't for a moment believe he sent our military into harms way lightly or frivolously.

I am tired of the Bush Bash Brigade.

Just Say No to B.O.

I also am tired ...
of the "Beat Bush Brigade." This man is not evil incarnate. Those who vote for Obama because is is not George Bush, are voting out of sheer emotionalism, something that separates the mind from cogent thought process.

Perhaps Obama will be the rod of God's anger on our nation, I don't know. I do know, however, that our country is going to change into something my husband and I will not recognize. I feel very emotional about that, but my thought processes are still intact. And, thank you, town Hall posters, for your intelligent and thoughtful comments today.

The Hope Brigade
Good defense of President Bush, Miss Paddy!

I can make one prediction that no matter what happens in November a lot of people are going to be unhappy...

McCain Republicans if Barack is elected and...

Barack supporters if he gets elected because Obama is the joker in the deck and there's no way in heaven or Hades that he can achieve Utopia in four years.

It's part of growing up when you realize there's no Santa Claus and no tooth fairy, only political hucksters who find there's a fool born every minute and the world will always have them with us--lemmings excitedly running over a cliff led by the Al Gores and Barack Obamas of each generation.

Thanks for putting forth my thoughts on our president. You said it ever so much better than I could! These people who continue to trash our president sicken me. It has been almost 7 years now without an attack on America and I'm sure that hasn't been simply by "luck" alone!

There are many places where I have felt he could have been stronger, but realizing hindsight is 20/20, what a terrible mess our country would be in today had either Al Gore or John Kerry been elected! On that point alone, a thinking person should NOT vote for Obama!

Yes, I wish we had a more conservative Republican candidate, but I will continue to speak out for everyone to vote for conservatives in their local and state races. That way, no matter who wins the presidency, the conservatives will have strength to keep them in line.

Bobby & Bryan...

That doesn't explain the giddy bedazzlement experienced by Barry's supporters. The MSM media admits to feeling thrills going up the leg? People faint in the street as if they were 13-year girls seeing Frank Sinatra--or Elvis--or the Beatles?

There is no rational explanation for this self-induced delirium. Yah, he was editor of the Harvard Law Review. Can you remember the last Harvard Review editor who inspired such national euphoria?

It's scary alright; scary that such people actually vote. Imagine what people throughout the world, who have some stake in who becomes POTUS, are thinking right now.

That Americans are insane...and they could be right.
