Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

In August of 1976, Republicans met in Kansas City’s Kemper Arena to nominate Gerald R. Ford for a presidential term in his own right, after a long and hard-fought battle with Ronald Reagan. It had been a close race, bearing some similarity to what is transpiring in the camp of the Democrats this year; at least in the sense of being a horse race careening toward the wire.

Reagan was in the crowd when President Ford gave his acceptance speech. It was a better than average performance for Ford, who was not known for his eloquence or for being a particularly animated speaker. That evening he was clearly upbeat and savoring his victory and the moment.

Following the address and during the usual post-speech floor demonstration, Mr. Ford went back to the podium and invited Mr. Reagan to the platform.  Reagan, at first, didn’t seem to understand, and had a look on his face that would become familiar to Americans a few years later when, as President, he would step off Marine One and walk toward the White House; the thumping of helicopter blades giving him cover for not hearing questions shouted by reporters.  But he eventually made his way from his seat in the distance to center stage.

The Great Communicator most commonly read his thoroughly prepared speeches (and was occasionally mocked for this, being called “the ACTING President”), but Mr. Reagan could, in fact, speak eloquently on cue in an impromptu situation. That night in Kansas City is a case in point.

I remember watching this on television and found myself thinking what I suspect millions of others were also wondering: “And, we didn’t nominate this guy, why?”

I felt a little like that last Tuesday night as I listened to Mike Huckabee’s remarks to his supporters telling them that he was dropping out of the race. His generous and eloquent phrases were upbeat and encouraging, and his obvious gift for communication came through loud and clear. He thanked his supporters, as was appropriate. Equally appropriate, in my opinion, is an acknowledgement of gratitude to Mr. Huckabee for a job well done.

So…Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for conducting a positive and people-centered campaign.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for doing this on a shoestring budget and with a comparatively small staff.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for reminding us that it is possible to be conservative without being spitting mad all the time.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for talking about the unborn and the pro-life issue.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for having the guts to suggest that the IRS should be abolished (do we sense an audit in Mike’s future?).

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for keeping your word – you stayed in as long as you promised, and you left decisively without dragging it out for media attention and personal purposes.

Just as Mr. Reagan came back to fight another day with his effective message of hope and conservative ideas, I believe Mike Huckabee’s presence on the American political stage is not over. It’s just beginning.  His approach is the best hope for conservatives and Republicans in the future.

As this political year continues to unfold, and with any hint of drama on the part of the GOP not likely for months, I certainly hope wise Republicans will find a way to make room for Mr. Huckabee at the party table. He needs to be a featured speaker at the convention in September. This is a very important thing – you may remember that it was a speech at the 2004 Democratic convention that provided a relatively unknown politician named Barack Obama the spring board to what he is up to these days.

And Mike Huckabee needs to play a part in crafting the party platform. Though some regard such a process and document as irrelevant, Ronald Reagan reminded us, in those 1976 off the cuff remarks in Kansas City that:

“There are cynics who say that a party platform is something that no one bothers to read and it doesn’t amount to much. Whether it is different this time than it has ever been before, I believe the Republican Party has a platform that is a banner of bold, unmistakable colors, with no pastel shades.”

Finally, the former Governor of Arkansas who ran such an effective campaign with little infrastructure, should be seriously considered for the Vice Presidential slot on the GOP ticket. If he did so well with so little, imagine how well he’d do with the money and machinery of the party behind him?

Frankly, if the number two place on a major party ticket is basically about balance, I would suggest that the balance Mr. McCain needs is to have someone who is a proven and effective communicator on the campaign trail.  Mike Huckabee fits the bill perfectly.

Oh, and there is one more thing Reagan said that night thirty-two years ago, he quoted “a great general” (read: Douglas MacArthur) with the line: “There is no substitute for victory.” And if the Republicans are to win in November, Mike Huckabee needs to be on the field and in the game.

Consider this...
Consider this...
at a rough guess, 80% of Huckabee supporters will not vote for McCain unless it's a Huckabee Vice-President.

Consider this, with so much loyalty for Huckabee, his supporters would even work for the McCain/Huckabee ticket.

And you know Huckabee supporters WORK HARD!!!

Consider all this, Mac Media!

America said no thanks to Tax Hike Mike!
And wisely so! This guy was a big government social conservative who allowing Americans to have freedom. Rather, he preferred a system where government would ration freedom based on what people like the Huckster felt Americans could safely use. Sorry, but that's not my idea of a conservatism. Nor it that most of America's idea of a president, as we saw in the polls. So, don't go away mad Huckster...just go away.

TheEngineer=paid party-boss surrogate
Why else would he make baseless claims?

Prove me wrong TE... Don't just put out your babble without substantiating it with full truths - not the half-truth/out-of-context/mischaracterizations that have been bottle-fed to you by your bosses.

Amazing.

Huck should seek a mega-church pulpit
When Huck, yet again, nearly broke his arm patting himself on the back for running an "honorable" compaign, this nearly 70-year old Christian conservative grandmother wanted to barf! Go back to Iowa and look at the discpicable anti-Mormon whisper campaign Huck allowed to rage under the radar. Sure, the Huckster comes across as sincere, down-to-earth and self-deprecating, all of which he uses to cover a HUGE and self-serving ego. In my opinion the only reason he stayed in a race he could not win was to serve his own ambitions, whatever they might be. Let's hope they lead him to talk radio or a mega-church pulpit.

Huck has all kinds of ethics issues in Arkansas. Plus he painted himself into a corner as the Christian candidate rather than a candidate for all the people. He proved himself weak on foreign policy and seems clueless on the economy. Like Obama, he talks and good talk, but that's it. He would be huge drag on the ticket were he to be the VP. There may be a few evangelical people who would campaign for Huck, but way more that would be completely disgusted with a McCain/Huck ticket.

Huckabee the only choice for VP
I wholeheartedly agree with this article. Mike Huckabee scares the heck out of the democratic party and the only people who would find fault with this guy HAVE to be democrats. Even alot of those came over to the http://www.mikehuckabee web and became Huckabee supporters. A McCain/Huckabee ticket would unite the party, generate excitement (Huck's supporters have that in spades) and give us a balanced ticket. McCain and Huckabee "fill in the blanks" in each other to make for a formidable package. Love the fighter, never quite attitude that both share. Two strong men, McCain has the military experience and Huckabee has the 10 1/2 yrs. executive experience. Huckabee has proven to be the best campaigner out there. McCain and Huckabee had chemistry when they were on the campaign trail together and they honestly seem to like each other. (can't say the same for Hillary and Obama). Plus, Huckabee's million of supporters will not be able to go all out for a McCain ticket unless our guy is in there as part of the team.

Great article on Huckabee
Great Article, you said it very well

''And, we didn’t nominate this guy...''
--
"...why?"

Mr. Stokes, I was in Kansas City in '76, too.

And I know "why."

Because the Eastern (now Bicoastal) Establishment "Rockefeller Republicans" had moved heaven and earth to prevent a Goldwater Conservative from securing the presidential nomination.

You - along with all the other conservatives attending that Convention in the Kemperer Arena in '76 were drawn down to the stockyards in Kansas City and slaughtered by the RNC like the cattle they want you to be.

Just as you've been with the McCain nomination *this* year.

-------------
"Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed. Their mistaken course stems from false notions of equality, ladies and gentlemen. Equality, rightly understood, as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences. Wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism."

-- Barry Goldwater, Acceptance Speeh at the Republican Party Convention, 1964

No! to people with imaginary friends
If the Huckster is so removed from reality that he believes the world is 6000 years old, he should further away from power.

McCain loses my vote if he puts a christofascist on the tioket.

MellorSJ2
I'm no fan of Huck, but he doesn't scare me because he goes to church, or even because he professes to be a Christian. We have had Christians in the WH several times since 1787, and seem to have survived. It sounds to me like you are over-reacting to the miniscule threat of religious people becoming politically powerful enough to force their religious beliefs on the country as a whole. I see a whole spectrum of dangerous ideas far more likely to be forced on the electorate by people who have shown themselves much more inclined to use jack-booted thugs. As a Christian might say, you seem to be straining at a gnat, while swallowing camels.

Have you read this site, savage99?
Well, have you? Several posters openly call for a theocracy. Many more do so implicitly. Hatred of those who do not share their "morals" spills from their every pore. Ask 'em if they want a USA based on biblical principles--and backed up by the force of law.

It is easier to enter a camel than pass a needle.

“Leave Huckabee alone!!!”

Can't we get rid of this guy?
Who are you, David Stokes, and why are there so many commentators on Townhall giving the Huckster the time of day?

He should have disappeared long ago, and the longer he sticks around, the more credibility the GOP loses.

If he does, by any chance at all, get the vice presidential nomination, we are all doomed.

Spectator got that right
"If [The Huckster] does, by any chance at all, get the vice presidential nomination, we are all doomed."

No kidding.

I wouldn't put it past one of these crazies to off McCain to get The Huckster in power. If they do it right (get a gay atheist vampire with emotional problems to do it, say), they'll be able to impose all sorts of christofascist cr@p.

Just like after 9/11.

"Doomed" isn't the half of it.

Thank you for recognizing greatness!
Thank you so much, Mr. Stokes for recognizing greatness in my first choice for president, Mike Huckabee. You have given voice to those who believe as you do, that this man deserves much credit for being who he is-a man of integrity, a great communicator and unifier and a dignified positive person who will one day, I am sure, be president. I pray that we see much more of him now and that more people will see his merit. Right now they are blinded by their own ideas and to what is actually more to their benefit. They are hypnotized by this "historic race", which is a pity indeed!

spectator - Migawd!

spectator says:

"...the longer [Mike Huckabee] sticks around, the more credibility the GOP loses."

Er, you're talking about the same (nominally) Republican Party that just got finished anointing John McCain as its candidate for the presidency?

And you're worried about "credibility"?

Hoo, boy.

Look, I think that Stokes' solution for the problem posed by the Huckster is a pretty good one.

Slide him into a conspicuous "management" post in the RNC - and completely *OUT* of the chain of command in the (laughably remote) possibility that McCain might win in November - and you've got the "Dilbert Principle" working in favor of the Rockefeller Republicans' desired status quo.

Better'n tattooing "Null & Void" all over Huckabee's broad, perspiration-speckled, empty forehead, isn't it?

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

-- Barry Goldwater

MellorSJ2
Sure i read the site once in a while. Sure there are religious fanatics that would love to see a Cromwellian type theocracy installed here, just as there are muslims that would like the world to be a caliphate. Its a matter of priorities, and numbers, and likelihood. I see lots of more important problems than the country becoming a theocracy. I dislike epithets in general, particularly when they apply to only a small part of an identifiable group, but are used to denigrate the whole group. Surely, you agree with me there. Why stoop to doing the same thing yourself?

huck
The preacher has been beguiled like so many others.
Huck was nothing until the Republican back room powers gave him one of their strongest back-roomer's to lead him down the path of "GET ROMNEY'.
He did a an admirable, shameful job.
Not to worry . He will be rewarded by the same back-room powers.

I am in total agreement with this article and appreciate Mr. Stokes for writing it. I have been a loyal Republican for over 30 years and since Sept., I have supported and campaigned for Mike Huckabee. His loss was America's loss and yes he would make a great Vice President. I read the hate filled comments on this site and it only makes me respect Mike more. If some "just want Mike to go away" then you are also telling his millions of supporters to "just go away" also. This is our party too and our vote is just as important as yours. God loves this country and so does Govenor Huckabee and so do I. He would help McCain defeat the Democrats in Nov. and without him our party loses. It will become obsolete in a few years as we shrink in numbers at the polls.

Not quite, savage99
I agree with the thrust of your post, and in particular that the likelihood of a xian theocracy in the US is low.

However, that probability would increase dramatically were the likes of Wannabe VP, if only because of McCain's age. What was the probability of an invasion of Iraq before 9/11? Low, but non-zero. After 9/11, Bush had ready-made excuses for invasion--and he did what he wanted to do all along. In short, circumstances offer opportunities. Better not to let the circumstances come about.

Separately, I agree that muslim theocracy is the greater threat. We can fight it from one of two perspectives: (1) my god is bigger than yours, or (2) reason against theocracy.

I think it critical for a long-term solution that we take approach (2).

Huckabee not my 1st choice-McCain-NEVER!
Huckabee was not my 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice but at least he is not McCain. I now have NO Choice for President (Hill & O-Man are no choice either)

I do not see a way McCain would pick Huckabee and by doing so I would NOT vote for it. McCain is that much despised.

The list of reasons I will not vote for McCain is long but a glaring example is when McCain used the Lords name in vain at MY Senator (John Cornyn)and now calls him "friend" (Cornyn's friend-right!) so he will support him for HIS personal gain; that man does not deserve my vote-period.

Huckabee can decide for himself if he wants to stay active in the Party. I would welcome him but I am not sure other would.

I will say Ford and McCain are on similar tracks and that track is to lose. In 1976 I did Not vote for Ford (Regan man here) and voted Carter. The Party Blue Bloods did it in 76 and have done it again in 08. My disdane for the Party then is much the way I feel today. The difference today, I will not vote for a Dem. So my only choice is

WRITING A NAME IN in NOVEMBER!!!

MellorSJ2
For balance, take a look at SJ Doc and Sandy above. Just as the Dems are fragmented by the identity politics of Obama/Hillary, so the segments on the right were fractured by the lack of a big tent candidate, which put McCain in, quite like Clinton was elected with less than a majority, with Perot's help. Huckabee would be a negative for me on the Rep ticket. On the other hand, i hardly disdain the support of those like Sandy, without whom the right wing has no chance of ever regaining political power. My own litmus test has always been the 2nd amendment, now joined by enforcement of the immigration laws which worked quite well for the over 200 years they were enforced. It can be seen i have no dog in the current race for POTUS.

Huckabee for VP?
Gov. Huckabee was Sen. McCain's lapdog for months by attacking Gov. Romney and not going after Sen. McCain (even when it was evident that McCain had become the man to beat). Was he playing for the number 2 spot? If not his campaign made no sense by not going after the front runner. Even after Gov. Romney dropped out he still hardly ran agressively against Sen. McCain.

Gov. Huckabee on the ticket does nothing for the ticket. Of course I realize that it will attract many evangelical voters who might stay home but Sen. McCain is still likely to win those southern states anyway. Gov. Huckabee's perceive (real?) anti-mormon bias could actually hurt Sen. McCain in the intermountain west where Mormons represent a large enough portion of the voters to put some states in play if they feel significantly slighted by a McCain/Huckabee ticket. Besides Sen. McCain needs someone with bona fides on the economy and that should be evident to almost anybody that that would not be Gov. Huckabee.

to engineer, mellor and typo
words mean things. When you call a candidate Huck or Huckster or Huckaphony you reveal more of your character than you do of what you object to. Instead of debating issues with respect you resort to insults. Whether or not you agree with him is no reason to be insulting. Do you do this on a non internet basis with others? You must have missed Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment not to criticize an ally or another republican.

Huckabee
I seriously doubt that Huckabee on the ticket will help an already difficult election. - We have three unqualified candidates for which we, as Americans must make a choice. Sadly, many American's don't really look at the past records of a candidate - they vote because he is either "a Christian" or "he supports the war" "or they approve of his message and his honesty as to what his real platform is. And then we have the "gimme handout crowd" or the "apathetic American who turns his head". John McCain is a sad choice that the GOP and the media shoved down the people's throats. Every other Republican hopeful was a better choice than McCain. People should demand McCain's health records now - what medication is the man on?

Perhaps a thought: Why not Condi Rice on McCain's ticket? - she is black - she is brilliant and she has a great deal more experience than McCain on international affairs. But would the man listen to her - doubtful.

Another thought - this delegate run election and the electoral college needs to go - we need the people's vote!

Huckabee is a Hypocrite
The only thing that I discovered about Mike Huckabee is that he is a hypocrite. Huckabee stayed in the race long after he should have withdrawn not because he wanted to keep the nominating process honest and competative but because he is a glory-hound who wants the attention.

But, worse yet, he is a hypocrite who isn't shy of using God and religion to further his own personal goals. He blatantly used the religion card against Mitt Romney and played to the evangelicals' biases.

Rather than unite, this man has knowingly and maliciously divided in order to get gain. This poor excuse of a man certainly represents something -- but it isn't noble. Far from it. He represents a certain man I have read about named Gadianton.

This country doesn't need a man like Huckabee. Let him slither back to where he came from.

Here, here!
Add another admiring endorsement of this article to the list, Mr. Stokes. Huckabee was a fantastic campaigner, and with essentially no money cobbled together a campaign that even was the front-runner for a short while. He's got a cheery disposition, doesn't fall into tired and repetitious rhetoric, champions social conservatism, and is capable of sympathizing rather than spitting on those suffering with economic hardships. He had my vote for President, and 'though he did not win, I would be ecstatic to see him as Vice President or the Republican Party's chairman. Particularly if he were McCain's running mate, just imagine, we could get 12 to 16 years of spectacular conservative governance! He has great vision, and a great set of policies to accompany that vision. Best wishes, Mike Huckabee! I hope your star will continue to shine brightly.

Thank You, Mr. Huckabee
Thank you, Mr. Stokes, for your great article! There are millions of us who recognize that Mike Huckabee stands for the future of the Republican party. I, too, believe that Mike would enhance the Republican ticket as v.p. Mike has the character, charisma and possesses the oratorical skills that McCain so obviously lacks. From the beginning of his run, Mike was ridiculed, mocked, and ignored by the press. Where some may have become bitter, Mike continued on with a good sense of "self" and humor (refreshing). He was a gentleman throughout and some could not see the brilliant politician he was through the smoke and mirrors the media had built around his campaign. Most importantly, he never wavered on his beliefs. He was CONSISTENT (unlike Romney who waffled and flip-flopped continually). I truly believe Mike Huckabee would be our nominee today if Fred Thompson had not been in S.Carolina to draw votes away from Mike. Anyway, here we are now. Without Mike, the millions who voted for him will find it difficult to vote for McCain. With Mike, you'll win over those who find McCain a hard pill to swallow. Whatever happens, don't count Mike out. He will be a reckoning force in the future!

Not to worry, Romney to the rescue
Romney is going to be VP. All signs are pointing to an impending announcement. Everyone, from pres. Bush on down are urging McCain to choose Romney, and there are so many reasons why he is the best choice. The personal animosity McCain has for Romney has been overblown, and McCain is probably wise enough to know that the only way he can win is with Romney at his side. This is going to make conservatives feel a whole lot better. McCain knows this.

Romney can help in MI and NV and more. He is an expert on the economy, healthcare. He is young, hardworking, intelligent, no skeletons, no past ethical issues, character beyond reproach. Not prone to gaffes or embarrassing displays. In fact, he has everything that Huck lacks. There is no way McCain could/would ever choose Huck. Like Rove said, Huck would double McCain's troubles.

Listen, Huck lovers - you can't change Huck's spots. He is who is is - a pro-life liberal. He has past ethical problems. He lies, he cheats, he steals furniture. He raises taxes, (er hope.) He pardoned 1000 criminals. He doesn't have a grasp on foreign policy. He eats fried squirrel. He is a bigot. (You think Mormons are going to come out and support him? HA! Millions of Mormons make the difference in some states.)

Huck has a record and it ain't pretty. McCain is not stupid.

Look for a Romney announcement this week.

From my view
Thank goodness the faith bigot is GONE.

He's not the only brand of Christian in he case.

Let's Face It
We are stuck. We are stuck with some choices we'd rather not make. McCain, Hillary, Obama; pretty sad.

Huck may be a good speaker and would pair well with liberal McCain as he is on the fence on some issues as well.

But where are all the Bill Buckley/Reagan type conservatives who believe in the platform as it should be, not a liberalized murky version.

It will not be good for the party to vote for..say a McCain/Huckabee ticket as the Rino/Moderates of the party will believe that is the way the party would have to go to win in future races.

Thinking of that for too long will make you nauseous. Going liberal-socialist to win. Makes me sick to my stomach just to type it. Blaah.

CLF
Touche.

Gov. Boggs II comes to the top of my mind. And if McCain is dumb enough to put huck on the tickjet, the entire west is lost. I promise you that many would work tirelessly for a clinton candiate or obama if that bigot is anywhere near the white house or second seat.

I would rather see an obama or clinton as president, than a bigot in the white house or veep. Period. I'm not alone.

By the way, anyone know where huck registered for gifts this time?

Mike, Meet Peter (Principle)
Huckabee is at the apex of his Peter Principle right now. One more promotion ultimately would demonstrate his incompetence. For the sake of our republic let's hope the Huckster gets a radio talk show host position.

The last thing we need is a religious zealot in a formal leadership position. I believe most of our presidents came from a Christian orientation and background but in the 21st Century it would be a huge mistake to elect a former Baptist preacher president--or even vice president.

I supported Romney for president but my examination of his career illustrated, to my satisfaction, that his religion played little--if any--influence on his conduct as a CEO in the business world and as a competent governor.

Through his speaking style and stump speeches Huckabee demonstrates he is first and foremost a former Baptist preacher whose terms as Arkansas governor did little to change that reality.

For God's sake can't Republicans produce leaders more well rounded and sophisticated in the world than a backwoods preacher?

Huck is for Huck
Amen to CLF, Qweenmum, and Jerseyvet.

Even though McCain and Romney have some major differences, he will accept the VP spot because he wants to serve his country. He has a record of service from his many years of volunteer service in the LDS church, to the Olympics, and as governor. I honestly believe it is all about making a contribution for Romney, not about power, glory or ego. He has a great capacity to do succeed at whatever is placed before him.

He will be an excellent benefit to the party in many ways. And hopefully, he will be president when the time is right.

That is why party bigwigs are pushing for him. They are thinking long term.

Mitt Romney
Mitt Romney is a chameleon. He changes at the drop of a hat! He is transparent to anyone with any brains at all! He reminds me of a slick car salesman. He tells you anything he thinks you want to hear. Who could ever trust a person like that???? It was so obvious that McCain disliked Romney INTENSELY. Not so with Huckabee. Huckabee and McCain hit it off well and the fact that they like and respect each other doesn't need to be said...it can be SEEN in the way they interact! This would be a TREMENDOUS ticket! McCain's run for president will be dead in it's tracks if Romney is on the ticket. Romney couldn't even carry the south; the south is critical for the Republicans if they have even the SLIGHTEST chance of winning this election. WE NEED MIKE HUCKABEE FOR V.P.!!

Huckabee
appears to be a nice person except for his obvious pandering to McCain and except for his one last gratuitous dig at Romney in his final speech.

Actually, Romney would be a better VP because of his knowledge of business and economics, a nice balance to McCains lack of neither knowledge or interest.

thank you
mr huckabee for reminding us of just how effectivelly a politician in a campaign can wear a mask of total deception.

HUCKABEE for V.P
Mike Huckabee was a governor for 10-1/2years! Compare his run as a governor with that of Romney's. Was Romney re-elected as governor of Mass., ..NO! Was Mike Huckabee re-elected...YES by huge margins! Huckabee was named one of the top five governors in the U.S.... That in itself, speaks volumes when it comes to experience! He was a Republican in an overwhelming Democratic-run state. With the blessings of the people of Arkansas, he rebuilt the crumbling road system and overhauled the educational system in Arkansas. Huckabee should be V.P.

Thank You Mr. Huckabee!
I loved your article on Mike Huckabee. And, I totally agree he should be McCain's running mate.

The Republican Party seems to have drifted to the left. Huckabee would add the balance needed to attract Social Conservatives to the plls.

And, the GOP MUST invite him to speak at the Convention. If not, it will be a great snub to Huckabee's supporters -- remember, he consistently attracted 1/3 of the votes this primary season. McCain cannot win unless this substantial Block is convinced to vote for him. I feel the only way to do so is to Include Huckabee on the ticket. And, to include Huckabee's issues on the Party Platform! Let's hear it for the Fair Tax!!

ronwik - it's simple
He's a liar a liberal, and a bigot. It gets no more complicated than that.

charlie
right. I've never seen such an obvious charlatan in decades.

ronwik
Would you vote for a racist if he were a "Christian Leader"? You need to open your eyes to what Huck is.

Ya know
Mellors, you never change your tune,
same song, 32nd verse every thread. We get it, you hate Christians and would feed us to the lions if you could. Instead of anything substantial like one atheist (one that I can respect) on a previous thread, you resort to childish namecalling. You aren't so much atheist as God hater, you have a gripe with God and waste time and breath attacking believers. I feel sorry for you, you have your free will to believe or not to believe but your hate rants are getting tiresome. Sing another tune and learn some American history.
AS for Huckabee, I did vote for Huckabee in my primary, only because he was McCain's last opponent. Romney wasn't my first choice and not because of his religion, but I prefered Hunter. I could support him as veep, I like Watts, Blackwell and Steele as well but McC is so stubborn and arrogant I doubt we'll get who we want. The Rockerfeller pubs will see to that.
I think Romney did a great job in my native state given the nincompoops who run the legislature and state senate..DemonRat majority.
I haven't decided what I'll do in Nov., it may depend on the veep choice, but I don't want to reward McC for his betrayal on amnesty.

Scared of religion.....
I find it funny that so many people in this country eagerly want to hate Huckabee because they are afraid he would bring about some kind of Christain theoracy while at the same time they completely ignore the fact that country is already being forced into a theoracy. The only difference is the religion of choice we are being forced into is the religion of socialism/facism. The Anti Christain as well as the Christian movements are both to share a large portion of the blame for the fact that we have John McCain as our only hope for keeping Clinton or Obama out of the White house. "This canidate isn't religious enough"...."This canidate is too religious"....wake up people!!! This is supposed to be a nation of law/order and individual freedoms, not a nation of religions.

Gosh all the haters still coming out
PC,as I said elsewhere I hope McCain tags Romney then we can get rid of two losers in the same election cycle. Clear the road for Huckabee in 2012. Thanks.

Huck ran a nice campaign, but that's all
Well, not quite! It's what his fullest detractors would like others to think. But I'm sure the title got some folks' attention.

Not even Chuck could save Huck. But I'll give Huckleberry credit for obliterating the biggest phony to ever to come out of my home state, Massachusetts. None other than Mitt the Mindless.

Mitt talked down to people in ways that made John Kerry and Mike Dukakis look like old neighorly ward bosses who'd actually listen to you.

Romney neverin all his life in politics ever got that down. Huckleberry did, and a lot of it had to do with his pastoral experience. He had to look at governance from a human perspective. What do our policies actually do to real people, who aren' numbers, units, votes and potential camp. contributors--but people who've suffered greatly. Romney was too busy chasing the buck and all too (blithely) willing to let his former employees take the fall.

Huckleberry's handling of Romney's snit over pardons was a masterpiece worthy of comparing only to the skill of James Michael Curley and yes, Bill Clinton. But rest assured, Romney was no match for Huckleberry, and he sure as hell wouldn't have lasted five seconds against Clinton, Dukakis or especially Curley.
Hell, even John Forbes Kerry managed to beat him.

Now, my only wish for Huckleberry is to separate himself from the likes of John Hagee, the Louis Farrakhan, or Ian Paisley, of the more radically backward looking conservative wing of evangelical Protestantism.

Hell's bells -- John McCain should, too. But it seems like Sen. Straight Talkin's a little slow here. So is the GOP concerning Catholicism.

Huck's FairTax show NOW !!!
The FairTax and Huckabee are both fire-hot right now. Huck can kill four birds with a nightly TV spot on a cable outlet. 1. People get the FACTS on the brilliant tax plan. 2. Huckabee makes a killin' on the show. 3. The cable group racks up cash also. 4. The show ramps up the tax plan faster in D.C.
If Kudlow, Dobbs, Cavuto, and the other fiscal pundits are cashing in just by simply presenting our problems on a nightly basis, just think how popular an actual solution show would be!
This golden goose is just sitting there, ready for a cable home. Like the FairTax, all involved in this gig win.

Be thankful it wasn't Mitt the mindless
Just be thankful you didn't get stuck with Mitt the Mindless. By the time the public got full wind of his style of "governance" in Massachusetts, the entire GOP, not just the "presumptive" nominee's mother would be holding their noses.

Republicans are wont to cut this, that and hell even programs that supply baby formula to infants (WIC). But at least saying you want to cut before election day is one thing. Getting in and letting government, especially the state's only major university campus (UMass/Amherst) die on the vine was worse. It was decepitive and irresponsibly destructive to even the private sector of the economy in western Massachusetts.

Had the main campus been located in the other part of the state I'm not sure this might've happened. But if it did, the damage to the private sector would've been even worse. Like it or not conservatives: you need the public sector in order to help the private sector grow. They both need each other in the long run.

Green shade ("gotta make the public sector 'accountable'")ideologues whose chief legacies lie in private job killing deals and shoving down expensive health care programs with nary a plan to help those who had to get it was nothing less than a cynical scortched earth plan to kill any public desire for universal health care.

He was more than mindless; he was meanspirited and cheap. McCain borders more on the mindless side of the scale.

Thank You Chuckle-Bee!
Yes thank you Chuckle-Bee. You allied yourself with that jerk McLame to make sure that we wouldnt have a conservative candidate this year. Your smarmy dishonesty, the oozing charm and the 24 carat sincerity that only ex-governors of Arkansas seem to possess gave us a campaign the likes of which we havent seen since Pat Robertson left the stage. The air of oleaginous fakery that Born Agains seem to find so compelling turned off everyone else and defined you as not being a serious candidate. Of course we're going to amend the constitution to adopt the 'Fair Tax' and all our problems will be solved. Easy as pie. Mark Levin has rightly labeled you 'Huck-a-phony'. Now you'll take your well-earned one-way ticket to obscurity and mercifully leave the stage.

Mike Huckabee
I do not see Mike huckabee as an honorable man, rather I see him as a major player in stopping the only Republican Candidate that could have won this election for us. Knowing full well that he did not have a chance in winning, he then decided to lie and attack Mitt Romney in hopes of securing a VP spot with John McCain. I found his tactics underhanded, dirty and shameful. As a Conservative, I know I will not soon forget his actions. I think he has a heck of a nerve claiming he ran a clean campaign. I do not at this point really care who wins the general election-Hillary or Barack. I know a John McCain does not have a prayer of winning. In any case, Mike Huckabee will never get my support.

Donkey tactics among conservatives!
It is a sad commentary today that some "conservatives" have succumbed to the same disdainful, cowardly, personal attacks that are so characteristic of the libelous left.

It is easy to detect the violaters by the vitriolic manner of their speech and should be flagged as offensive. These comments should be for honest debate without reverting to emotional personal attacks.

I McCainicus
What if the media puffed McCain thinking he could never beat Obama/Clinton?

But if these are the last days of Rome maybe the guy you think can't win will.

You know, Nero is busy shooting him self in the foot, burning Christians, castrateing young boys for his harem, his behavior totally out of control thinking the world is his Monica.

Then the stuttering Claudius is the last man left standing, the guy no one suspected.

But the believers quietly keep working and end up winning the day.

This may be God's plan to get Huck in the back door as president if McCain has a stroke or something.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee
I agree with this article 100%. Mr. Huckabee remained calm, respectful to all and he made sense. Fair Tax makes so much sense, it's ridiculous that Democrats aren't jumping all over because it fits with their philosphy.
His common sense approach is appealing to people across the board. My mother is a Dem. However, she wanted to vote for Mr. Huckabee in Nov.
Being a Christian is not a requirement to appreciate common sense. Core American principles do not require one to be a Christian.
I too, don't believe that McCain can win without Huckabee on the ticket. The combined support of the two against the Dems, who are confused right now, would win hands down.

to other bloggers here
It bothers me to hear people speak of potential ill fated possibilities re McCain's health. I could never wish such a thing. Can you imagine what he might feels reading such things? I respectfully ask you to consider your written words carefully.
Yes, his age is a detriment. But that's all I could possibly say on this subject. I can never wish him ill or worse.

Look Past The Stereotype
Oh, good grief- I had hoped all the Bitter Mitters had stopped posting all over the place!
Mike Huckabee brings hope to a very depressing political landscape, not only to evangelicals, Born Agains and other members of the far right, but people like me who believe the FairTax would be the best thing to happen to this country's economy. His stands on illegal immigration, border security, addressing our aging infrastructure, Second Amendment rights, energy independence and transparency in government spending resonate with anyone who looks past the stereotype to investigate them.
PLUS, he's a brilliant orator who knows how to connect with and inspire people- too bad the 100 Million Dollar Man never could (and never will).

I really don't know????
Didn't Huckleberry say George and Jeb are brothers??

I'm glad this self-promoting Baptist preacher man is now out of the picture.

Maybe he could be put in as national preacher man however. I'm sure he would like that, as would all of the evangelicals that voted for him because he is their BRAND of Christian!

McCain/Huckabee YES!!!!
Looks like a perfect fit. Both have been moderates on immigration. John has got to love that. Since McCain is going the way of Ford/Dole, we can get both moderates out of the way in one election. Personally, I think he will choose Guliani. The South will not vote for the Dems for the most part. Guliani gives more draw in less traditional Republican states. Huckabee is a great speaker. He was smart to latch on to the Fair Tax in Iowa. It gave him an instant following. I was Fair Tax long before Huckabee and I still am.
The economy is the big issue now and it will be even more so after 4 years of Hillbama.

others have dropped out
others have dropped out of the race ... and so have their supporters.

NOT SO WITH HUCKABEE...take a look at the continued strength of his supporters (much less continued respectful dialogue).

http://www.mikehuckabee.com/

btw, why does Townhall make it so hard to comment on any positive Mike Huckabee articles? They have disabled most of the links to the comments sections.

my point being
my point being that MAC NEEDS A HUCKABOOM!

Steven
You make some interesting points that might be worth thinking about but I must gently say that, after reading your comments -- if I were you, I would not be calling Mitt Romney mindless. He may be a lot of things, but lack of intelligence is not one of his problems. Unfortunately, you only suggest your own lack of intelligence by suggesting such.

A team of Amnesty John and the Huckster?
Now there's a pair-- Paragoric! The worst traits from the right (neoCONism/ profligate adventurism abroad, religious intolerance and subjective morality, and embracing ILLEGALS) with none of the good ones. Yessir, let's have more RINO/CINO instead of real conservative government values with a touch of wild card thrown in. Saints be praised!

Again I say, better support as many of the real fiscal and limited govt. conservatives as you can for other offices, because the grumpy old man is goin' down. We held Slick Willie in check and got balanced budgets and welfare reform because we had a true Republican Congress for a time in the late 90's-- before they morphed into RINO's/CINO's. We MUST keep a close eye on Congress, or RINO's and the left will make 20 million ILLEGAL aliens voters, whereupon America will be lost, because they will all votes for big entitlement govt., and the 20 m. will soon become 100 m. as the also ignorant, indigent, culturally disparate relatives are brought in.

You can rattle those cages in Congress continuously at their official contact sites right here-- bookmark it and bark at them daily! It was Middle Americans just like YOU who derailed Kennedy-McAmnesty only months ago, but they are trying to sneak scamnesty by again in various bills, including Pelosi's!

Romney will be VP
Romney's websight is back up. Many people in GOP leadership are urging McCain to choose him, including Pres. Bush and Jeb, Rove, and others. They are thinking ahead and Romney is the brightest star.

Romney is on the top of the short list, and for good reason. He has no baggage, he was embraced by conservatives, including talk radio, he has more competence and talent than anyone on the list, his character is beyond reproach, he is good at winning debates, he has a stunning record of success with everything he's ever done, he will help in MI, NV and more, and he is a great fundraiser.

Here is Fred Barnes take, and there are many out there saying the same thing.

http://weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/0 14/854gvvhu.asp

I think an announcement is in the works for this week. If Romney is VP, he would be in line for 2012 or 2016. Add Bobby Jindal to that ticket and we will have a great conservative opportunity for years to come.

Huckabee would double McCain's troubles
Rove says. He's right. McCain needs a conservative, not necessarily an evangelical. Huck is liberal on all but 3 issues. (Life, guns, marriage.) He's not a fiscal or foreign policy conservative.

Romney has all three legs of the stool. And Romney has no past ethical or character problems.

The press and the dems would have a field day with Huck's record and statements. From pardons, to taxes, to not knowing about or reading the NIE report,to squirrels, to stealing furn, to wedding gift registries. And there would surely be some interviews with the crime victims of the pardoned criminals who Huck turned his back on.

Folks, Huck is not even on the list, long or short. He was never more than a useful idiot for Rudy and then McCain. McCain does not need a man with so many easy targets for the MSM to shoot at.

Mindless...??
Steve. when you accomplish.... what romney has accomplished..the come back to to table and talk like an adult! There are things that could be said about Mitt and others that would merit some thought.. but this guy accomplishments are very well noted and impressive ! Probably more than you can even dream..... so get off your double dose of viagra! Just relax... and take a deep breath...take a nap...since your brain already is NAP mode!

No one is trying to set up a theocracy enforced by law. You're the one with the imaginary friends. I take it you're an atheist? It's ok for your kind to force down my throat that I must not believe in God or think of God? You are an un-thinking hypocrite.

PC
Romney would be a good addition to the ticket if McCain were electable. I feel like whoever he selects as VP will be a Jack Kemp, Dan Qualye kind of guy, never to be considered for President. Only exception was Ford/Dole and we see how Dole did when he was the nominee. Guliani or Huckabee would be my choice.

Outside of the Anti-Christian bigots
I find it funny that those who are anti-Huckabee automatically assume that Huckabee's purpose was to derail the Romney campaign.

1) Huckabee won Iowa NOT ROMNEY!!! Until any Romney and Thompson support admits that truth then they should not be taken seriously here.

2) I along with many others believed wholeheartedly that Mike Huckabee would sweep the South. The region was not an automatic Romney gift even if Huckabee wasn't in the race. Anyone of you willing to admit that maybe Romney stayed in the race to derail Huckabee's chances? Let's not forget Fred Thompson who stayed in the South Carolina primary when it was clear that he wasn't going to win.

3) Many Republicans hated Mike BECAUSE of his Christianity. I find it laughable when many Republican automatically paint social conservative Christians as fiscal liberals. However, that is far from the truth.

For many conservative voters the choices were: Fred Thompson, a great conservative, but involved himself into the race a little too late. Mitt Romney, who happened to flop on nearly every social issue prior to becoming a national candidate. Mike Huckabee, who was clearly a social conservative and a proponent of abolishing the IRS.

Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter were two very good candidates but neither were given the time of day by the Republican party. Ron Paul would have been of excellent quality if he didn't have an almost closely extremist position on foreign policy.

I want to add one last thought and present it as clearly as possible: social conservatives including Christians refused to support Romney not because of his Mormon beliefs BUT BECAUSE HE FLOPPED ON SOCIAL ISSUES JUST PRIOR TO BECOMING A CANDIDATE!!!

I will get into the stupidy of accusing a Baptist of promoting a theocracy in a later post.

One more 'Thank you'
Thank you, Mr. Huckabee, for splitting the conservative vote and costing Mitt Romney a chance at the presidency (NOT!).

Your presence in the race did nothing more than give John "Mr. Amnesty" McCain a free pass to the Republican nomination. Now, conservatives have no one to vote for in the general election. Now then, if you love the thought of amnesty for illegal aliens, this election offers you triple the pleasure of loons for whom to vote.

rayfinn...good points
As a romney supporter... I still think whoever he puts on the ticket...still may not help him get elected ! An excercise in futility...period!
The only thing that might change the forcast of doom/gloom..something really big happens..terrible! Making the nation think of nothing but National Security !!!
If juan asks Mitt I hope he declines!
I know Mitt is an awsome money raiser...but if thr demorats out number you at election day..and the very unpopular war is going on w/out huge success...do you get the thought!?

vp...
Any difference? I dont think so!
I could be wrong...but i dont think it will avoid a real bashing!

Another opinion--
I think that the USA will regret the fact that they did not get behind Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo. Reason: None of these leading candidates have expressed to my knowledge anything about completely closing the border, actually putting strong fence in place, cutting off all aid to the illegal alien mess, and placing heavy fines on the enablers of these illegals. The economy was doing fine without the large concentrations of illegals 10,15,20 years ago, and we could do the same now without them and the drain they are putting on our resouces. The outsourcing of jobs, this is another factor that has not been solved. I don"t think either party wants to solve these problems. We can all think of many reasons why they don't. My observation here in a border state.

sdogg1m - wrong about so much
Some evangelicals did reject Romney because of religion, and many have stated so. Even so, the evangelical vote was split between candidates.

Romney did not flip on any social issue except one - abortion. He did what Reagan did. He was always personally pro-life, but ran in MA as someone who would not seek to change abortion laws making him effectively pro-choice.

There are no other social issues he flipped on. He has always been against gay marriage. The only thing he ever advocated was for gays to be treated equally under the law. Romney went to bat for the marriage amendment as governor, urging senators to support it, including McCain who rejected it. That's more than Huck has done for marriage.

Huckabee has more flip-flops than Romney. He changed his tune on taxes, illegal immigration, and foreign policy. He was never a fiscal or foreign policy conservative, and he became anti-illegal immigration about Nov 2007 when he realized his pro-amnesty statements and record wouldn't fly.

And of course Huck's goal was to derail Romney - everyone was trying to. He was always the one to beat. Rudy and McCain both used Huck for that. Huck also had the side benefit of keeping a Mormon out of the White House. If you don't believe it then just consider Huck's past. He has been involved in trashing Mormonism. I'm sure he takes great pleasure in derailing Romney.

But his success is short-lived. Huck has no political future, and Romney is looking very viable for VP, 2012 or 2016.

One more thing. Nobody hates Huck for his Christianity. But they do hate the way he used it for political gain. We don't think he acted very "Christian". He is a faker, a liar and a man completely in it for himself, to the point of making himself ridiculous. He needs to be banished from the GOP.

nrobyar
Your claim that Huckabee critics "have to be democrats" is absolutely preposterous. I've been a conservative, Christian, government-distrusting conservative all my life, and on those three grounds I cannot stand the idea of a Huckabee presidency.

And are you serious that putting Huck on the ticket would "even out" a McCain presidency? How naive do you have to be to even say something like that? It's not a combined presidency! Only one of them sits in the oval office. Only one of them signs legislation. Only one of them appoints SCOTUS justices. Only one of them is commander in chief. So until one of them dies, only one of them is relevant.

I've had it with Hucksturbation. He's a big government "conservative," just like McCain, butt with more self-righteousness. I don't even know how that's possible.

Disappointed in Gov Huckabee
I agree mostly with PC

Gov Huckabee overstayed his welcome.

Yes, he is a decent man with good moral values that I would welcome in the oval office.

Beyond his conviction on social issues though, I don't have a lot of confidence.

Gov Romney could have stubbornly stayed in the race as long as Gov Huckabee and would have certainly garnered many more delegates.

Gov Romney's decision to acquiesce when he did was taking the high road and enabling Sen McCain to save much needed funds to defeat the Dems in November.

Gov Romney knows full well the looming disaster should the Dems secure the White House.

The best nominee will not be representing the republican party in the fall, but he will do less damage to our liberty, freedom and pursuit of happiness than the democratic alternatives.

Gov Romney's stock has risen greatly.
Gov Huckabee's stock has sunk in my humble estimation.

sdogg1m
Okay, first things first. Huckabee won in Iowa, not Romney. There, do you feel better? I know I sure do -- of course, even in my Romney-supporting ignorance, I realized that the evening of the Iowa caucus.

If you voted for Huckabee because you really didn't agree with Romney or were concerned about his record. That's fine. More power to you. You have every right to vote the way you want. I have no problem with people who look at a candidate and look at the issues and vote for those reasons.

I have a lot of problems with people who vote against someone only becuase of their religion. They are bigoted and we don't need more bigots in this country. Now you may claim Romney's religion didn't play a role but there is too much evidence to the contrary. It's sad but true that religion played a very prominent role in Romney's loss.

As for people disliking Huckabee because he's Christian, there may be a few but I think there are more who were offended by Huckabee for the hypocritical way he treated his and others' religion.

What's ironic is that Huckabee was my second choice (I would have changed that no matter what after finding out about his tax and spend approach to government)because he seemed to be a good person and I even commented to a few people that since Huckabee was a former minister, I figured he was at least a man of integrity.

All of that changed when he began attacking Romney's religion in order to move up in the polls. He not only attacked Mitt Romney with his anti-Mormon inuendo, but he attacked me and every other Latter-day Saint. And don't say it was an innocent question or innocent comments -- they were not. I've been studying anti-Mormon literature and activities for thirty years. If it walks like a duck and quack likes a duck, it must be one.

Huckabee's quack is insidious.

Huckabee brings hope?
To whom? Not the western united states. We think he's a loser with the L tattoed oh his forehead. He lost us whenhe did his little 'slip' about mormons. He knows. He knows full well, as he has 'preached' at antip mormon conventions.

Never trust the huck. He's a slimey liar, and those that fall fo his vile, are not too bright.

McCain/Romney 08. It's the ONLY ticket tht makes sense. Oh, FYI. Romney's son was approached to run against Mattheson, who is doing a pretty good job for a democrate. Polls showed that the younger romney would have kicked butt. But he chose not to run. Why? Some speculate that it is because his dad might be veep.

Oh, the world is sweet.

McCain/Romney 08, 12 and 16.

Couldn't be a poorer choice for VP
I agree with K.G.
I have a problem with Senator McCain for President because he is courting the Independents and moderate Democrats which may help him get elected. Not a President Reagan did with conservative principles but with a move to the left (not the center).

But he needs a conservative, and there are many, as a running mate. Just pitching the Fair Tax and getting rid of the IRS is not necessarily fiscally conservative. We need to clean up the tax code and reduce spending.

Mr. Huckabee may garner a portion of the Evangelicals but his reputation will counteract Senator McCain's appeal to the moderate and Independent vote.

Additionally, he may drive people, as myself, to actually NOT vote for the President/VP. I could never pull the lever for a socialist, which is what we have with the Democratic candidates but would have a hard time voting for 2 populists, one hawk and the other pro-life.

Surely you jest!
The Huckester is a shamster. He's a bigot and is the reason Romney is not our candidate. Shame on the huck and his bigoted followers!!!!!!!

Huck a sham and Romney not?
The single biggest phony in this presidential primary was Mitt Romney.

I am perfectly open to hearing a case for why Huckabee is not the real deal (I like in Texas and voted for Huckabee over McCain) but when I hear somebody say that Huck (the sham) is the reason Romney (the apex of conservatism) is not the nominee I stop listening right away.

Romney=zero credibility

Decent article btw, from a pro Huck perspective, but it's not going to make anybody regret not having voted for him.

Huckabee Is Scum
Huckabee has guaranteed a liberal will be in the White House for four years. He is dead meat as far as I'm concerned and is not fit for dog catcher.

Huckabee-Romney
Unfortunately I don't think McCain will pick either. Listen to all that you are reading on this blog today. This blog should tell you there is just too much division between the two.

mark h. and mike
Are you serious about huckabee not being the real deal..? Gimme a break, would ya! he's the real deal! Now do you feel better? But I didnt say real WHAT deal! ever hear of billy clinton
and his phony wife bonnie(hillary)? they did things like..vanish records, parole sleezy ,bad people, etc.! Their partner in crime huckabeery: vanished the hard drive of the computer system, paroled a sleezy bad guy who went out and killed someone,etc.,etc. Now that i think of it
where in HECK have you been for the last 6 months
on mars? do i have to rehearse his attitude about
ILLEGAL,ILLEGAL, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?!

Hucks a grub
These articles tell me a lot about the people writing them. It tells me they do not know what they are talking about.

Judicial Watch, a very reputable organisation has Huckabee in the top 10 most wanted corrupt politicians. I trust Judicial Watch on this call. They investigate the grubby politicians. They out them. Huckabee has been outed as a corrupt politician.

Conservative GOP politicians called Huck “Socialist Mike”. They castigated him on taxes and spending, on immigration, on pardons. Huck beat the conservatives up. The conservatives in Arkansas do not like Huck.

Conservative Baptists did not like Huck. He beat them up when they were trying to clean out the liberals.

Most conservative commentators have been highly critical of Huck. It’s their job to look at politicians history and make calls. Most do not like the Huck.

Who are these Huckbots to essentially call these people liars because they out Huck on his record. Do they know more about Huck than the poor conservatives who had to work with him?? If they are going to voter for him because he goes to their church, then fine, say it. But please do not insult us by declaring he is a good man. Do not insult us by saying his critics have the problem.

Mike Huckabee
I agree with your sentiments about Mike Huckabee. He is still my choice for President. I only hope he will have a very important roll in the GOP future. We need a man of God who is trustworthy and will lead this country in this time of great turmoil. N.J.H

For the life of me, I don't get it
How are so many people duped by the Huckster? The facts about him are out there, but they chose to ignore them. He is a known liar, liberal, tax-raiser, criminal-pardoner, bigot and dunce. He used Christianity as a weapon to gain politically. He is the worst candidate on our side for as long as I can remember.

Please, Huck supporters, look at the facts and have the courage to see the truth about this man.

No to Huckabee
The reasons to not want Huck on then the ticket have nothing to do with his being an evangelical Christian.

He has positioned himself as a Christian candidate to the exclusion of "all of the people". Foe example, I support his pro-life position. But you don't have to be a Christian to be pro-life.

He is very light on foreign policy and is a big government, tax and spend RINO with social conservative positions. His views do not lead to the liberty I believe the framers of the Constitution had in mind.

Government is much too big. Jefferson said that liberty declines as government grows. We are witnessing this today.

A McCain-Huck ticket would be a disaster.

McCain needs a young, fiscal conservative as a VP.

Forgot to mention he's mean spirited
I forgot to mention his mean spirit remarks through out his campaign especially directed those at Romney. He topped it all when he said the two most honourable campaigns lasted to the end. Well don’t ask others opinion Huck. You may not like the answer. What an insult to Brownback, Giuliani, Hunter, Paul, Romney, Tancredo, and Thompson. What gall. He sure does love himself.

Only Viable ticket:
McCain/Romney 08.
Romney 12, 16

Sorry huckalemmings. You guy showed his true colores, and the west, east and North parts o the us don't buy whatever he's sellling. All it too was one little sentance for me and others to take a real look at Huckabee and see he's not what he pretends to be.

Question: When Romney is announced to be the next Veep, will Huck do the gracious thing, put on HIS acting shoes and make nice?

I doubt it.

The Big Secret Huckabee did not know??
Mike Huckabee sucked up to John McCain and really got screwed! Because Mike decided he was a little different and guided by divine inspiration he thought he could make a deal with the devil. But guess what?

Just when he thought he was impressing everyone and continuing his campaign as he put it to the very end because of principle....his hubris got the best of him. He was so sure he was gonna be picked by McCain for that VP slot. Afterall, its in the cards by Gods plan that he should follow McCain as President....but theres just one problem.

What ever be said about Romney...for the most part he is a pragmatist...so he bowed out in February after McCain and he shook hands that he would be the favorite for the VP slot...poor Mikey.....he didnt realize that he was just stubborn and actually prevented any possiblity that Romney would have a chance but he did insure that McCain would get the delegates needed.

Huckabee/Horton?
What a legacy is Mike Huckabee 'Horton the Elaphant?'

Reading on Catholic Online I cam across an early description of 'what a Christian is'. Acording to the author it is (in condensed form) 'One who is in the world but not of the world. Hated by both Jew and Gentile but for no reason they can comprehend'.

It is amazing that the GOP candidate who 'HOLDS' over one third of the party nationwide and most probably more in Republican 'red?' states is now resting up after defeat. While the presumptive one travels on tax dollars to view Europe? Will there be stops at the AIRBUS plants over there?

It came to me one morning that Mike Huckabee is Dr. Sues's (Horton the Elephant). It was one of those weird analogies that we sometimes entertain but it keeps growing in me. This is making me look closer at Dr. Sues and wonder more about the messages in his writings.

While the Catholic comparisons to David vs. Goliath still hold true, I keep wondering who is the real Giant? Is it the DEMS? Not the friendly green Giant McCain at this jucture. But God has shown us as in scripture, Mikes words, Super Tuesday, and Warrenpiece 'SUPER TUESDAY' video that "One small stone.. and the widow's mite.. are truisms today." Go back further in David's life and wonder what beast he has fallen this year...? The bear, lion.. And remember that David was at the first not in war for his lethal ability but only to play music for the king. These things need time to see through yet.

What about the ALAMO? Going into battle with the Alamo as the outcome seems foolhardy. I would be a little nervous in retrospect if I were marching into a fight with an anthem of "Let's go to the Alamo to meet the thousands!" But.....The cry "Remember the Alamo!!!" proved powerful after the sacrifices of the hero's who died there.

Huckabee/Horton?
Quick sidetrack on the Alamo: Some news stories reported that Mike used the Alamo for his stumping but defamed the true spirit of the Alamo by refusing the gentlemanly warrior spirit of admitting defeat??? Hello??? And how about some major news 'Reuters I think' covering Mike's SNL appearance like a real news show and saying that he tried to steal extra 'face time' by ignoring repeated attempts to remove him from the scene??? Despicable and at the same time laughable. See the top about 'Christians hated for no reason.'

OK.. nuff rantin, to my analogy of Mike Huckabee and Horton the Elephant. Stay with me a minute longer... you will see. It was one of those mornings where all of the Media ..well 'alot of it' was focussed on Mike's eminent withdrawal from the campaign later in the day. According to news McCain had now finally made it impossible for Mike to win 'again just like before'. We were all here asking Mike for support....tell us Mike! What are they saying!!! There was a story I think on Huffington Post Mocking President Huckabee for supporting a life amendment in Colorado I think? The headline was 'Mike is the Eggman!' spinning on the old Beatles tune Walrus. Suddenly it dropped to me that Mike is the Eggman...he is the Elephant 'Horton' whom Dr. Sues envisioned! I remembered What Horton said "I meant what I said and I said what I meant, this elephant is faithful one hundred percent!" and he was!

Ok if you have never read Horton hatches the Egg things might seem a little weird from here on out but try to envision it.

I meant what I said and I said What I meant! This elephant is faithful 100%. Through it all Horton stayed and sat on the egg and then in the end the egg hatched and forsook its bird mom for Horton! It was a next generation of flying elephants! Read back through the Alamo segment above.....

Huckabee/Horton?
Another book has Horton hearing a who? Who did Horton hear? 'who?' They were just ordinary Whos in Hhoosville Who's life depended on Horton! Imagine the drumbeats as the folks chanted 'boil that dust speck.. boil that dust speck...boil that dust speck. Then change the words in your head to ... mathematically impossible...mathematically impossible! mathematically impossible! mathematically impossible! mathematically impossible...ad infinitum

Remember another Character who heard the Who ...the Grinch! There was a good story! In the end the Grinch finally learned at the end of his lonesome life the true spirit of Christmas. Even at his age he could still see the light and his heart grew 3 sizes they say 'he cut the roast beast!'.

PS My favorite Sues story is 'the pale green pants with nobody inside em'

This one could be the story of the fear that the liberal 'and conservative?' blogosphere hold for those who openly confess Christianity. Although they have never been afraid of anything 'not very'.

Thank you Mike and all of the rest of humanity who sees things as they really are.

Let us all not shake and tremble but smile wave and say HI!

Long past tired of Willard Romney
Every time an article appears that mentions Mike Huckabee, the Mormon Zealots go into a frenzy, get their special "garments" in a wad, and lose their seer stones. Get over it.
Romney was no great business man. He made a lot of money raping and robbing such companies as AmPad and DDi, which caused civil suits to follow and pay-outs to be made by Bain Company. Damon Corp. was the one that really brought Mitty to prominence. There was a criminal trial there as Bain used Damon for massive overbilling of the Medicare system. Bain paid $119M in criminal and civil fines. U.S. Atty. Donald K. Stern said it was "a case, pure and simple of corporate greed run amok". In his campaign for Governor, Mitty said that the blew the whistle on the whole deal. U.S. Atty. Stern that there was absolutely no way that was true. Great businessman, that Willard.

Long past tired of Willard Romney II
Willard ran to the left of Ted Kennedy when he ran for the Senate. He was Mr. Pro Gay, Mr. Pro Choice, Mr. Leftest Liberal. These honest positions were the same ones his mother held when she unsuccessfully ran for the Senate. Seems like a well held family belief. Then he ran for Governor as a Liberal. He didn't serve out a good term before he decided he wanted to be President. He scooted out of the governor's office fast enough, he thought, that the damage he caused with his health care wouldn't surface until he was further down the political road. But, it has, and, it's ugly.
So here is Mr. Stiff as a Board running for President as a conservative. Never in his political life had he walked the talk he suddenly was spewing everywhere. He had a hard time convincing anyone but fellow Mormons about that sudden change. BYU got tagged for sending out e-mails for support and money for him. After all, it is a wholly owned church school. Just imagine what would have happened to any other church organization. He was so uninspiring that I doubt he could have persuaded a man with a full bladder to use a pay toilet. He just isn't personable. By February 5th, Mike Huckabee had spent $37K per delegate and John McCain had spent $54K per delegate. As Mitt the Wit had not given his January numbers, which would make his spending higher, as of the end of December he spent $306K per delegate. Poor return on investment for such a "great businessman".

Long past tired of Willard Romney III
Even after it was agree, in the debates, that religion would not be discussed, Huckabee continued to get religion questions. Soon to be Prophet, Stakeholder Mitt made arragements to stage a remake of John Kennedy on religion. He said little. He brought it up. Why not explain differences and put them behind him? After all, George H.W. Bush loaned Romney his presidential library to make his presentation. But, he said little more than he believes in Jesus Christ. Well, that's not quite honest, either. Nevertheless, he claimed that dirty tricks were played on him and he lost Florida. He blamed Gov. Crist for not supporting him. Why didn't he acknowledge that Jeb Bush's political machine was working for him full-time? Willard has a hard time taking personal responsibility for his failings despite the tremendous out-spending advantage he had. I guess this all had to do with the alleged "whisper campaign" about him being Mormon. If he could not or would not clarify what he thought was a problem, he's not up to the job.

Long past tired of Willard Romney IV
Maybe Christians have a hard time with the LDS (Mormonism) due to statements made by leaders of standing in that group. Brigham Young said, "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity." Journal of Discourses, vol.10, p. 230.
Brigham Young said, "...no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestrial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith...every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are." Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 289. You will have a hard time selling this propaganda to any Christian who has read the Bible. We are told by Christ that He is the light and the way and that no man goes to the Father but through Him. It is at odds with all other Christian belief.

Long past tired of Willard Romney V
Not to leave it all in a bad place to begin with, Brigham Young went on to say: "He that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but is anti-christ." Journal of Discourses, vol. 9, p 312. So, all other Christians are anti-Christ.
To put a fine point to it, Bruce McCorkie said, "If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation. There is no salvation outside the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." Mormon Doctrine, p. 670. This directly contradicts the Christian Bible.

Long past tired of Willard Romney VI
To quote Orson Pratt, one of the Twelve,"Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces...Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of those apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them unless they repent." The Seer, p. 255.
Those who are not Mormon should read http://www.josephlied.com. It is written by a former Mormon who was kicked out of the "saints" for questioning things that were obviously wrong.
So, don't wing in here with your garmets and seer stones and claim you are of Christian faith. My Bible does not say "To be continued" at the end of it. Even Joseph Smith's writings were changed. Suddenly the "Angel Nephi" became the "Angel Moroni". That change was made after Smith's death. Was he wrong, this great seer who got words from a stone placed in a hat he had over his face?
I can explain why this movement started, I just can't explain how anyone would fall for it. I don't trust such a "believer" to be President, especially when his checkered past shows how freqently he changes his mind on important issues.

Six posts in a row? Seriously, how many people do you expect to read all that crap? More importantly, how many people do you expect to convert?

Readers who aren't Mormon are already not Mormon. Anyone who IS Mormon has already heard everything you just said. They're still Mormon, except now they think you're an a$$.

I'm not Mormon, and I think Mormonism is a false religion, but many Americans think Christianity is a false religion. God can sort it out, eventually, but in the meantime let's be grown ups about this. Look at a candidate's policies, experience, and character to decide what kind of President he'll be, not where he goes to church.

Zedsmom
Thank you. I rest my case on anti-Mormon bigotry among some of the voters.

Beyond that, I better stop because what i would like to call you and where I would like to tell you to go would not be Christian (and, contrary to your statements, Mormons are Christian).

And thank you, Mr. Huckabee,
for giving us loser John McCain.

Payback

McCain and Romeny will be BOTH on Hanity and Colms tonight. Notice huckleberry is not there. Will he put on his acting shoes, smile and support this ticket?

I would love to be a fly on the wall and the huclkebee home tonight when this one airs.

Like I said
McCain and Romney will be on the tube - jointly - tonight. As far as being a fly on the wall, I wish I could. But it's Monday night. We 'non christian' mormons will be spending quality time with or families, teaching them from the scriptures and doing what PARENTS shou, and not paid preachers.

McCain will not be a 2 term president
If by some miracle Senator McCain is elected president, I just don't see him being in office for 8 years.

I'd welcome Huckabee on the ticket so he'd have a better chance in 4. If he's not the VP & decides to run again in 4, he'll have my vote assuming he sticks to his principals and continues to champion the FairTax.

He's the 1st Republican that I actually felt I could support for the office of president, since Reagan in '84, rather than feeling he was the lesser of 2 evils.

Now that he's not in the race anymore, I'll support McCain was a better choice than Hillary or Obama, but I have no love for the guy.

Huck has been running for vice all along. God forbid you call a spade a spade. If there were any element of truth in your tirade of admiration for Huck's pursuit of the political process, sharing his allegedly bold ideas and other such nonsense, then you and those like you owe Ron Paul a public apology.

Qweenmumof7
Thanks for your comments- they are always right on! The folks who ignore the truth about the Huckster are a pitiful lot, indeed.

Get Over Mitt...
Prior to this Republican primary, I knew very little about Mormons. In recent weeks, I have learned that there is apparently a lot of anti-Christian sentiment in the LDS community, as well as a LOT of bitterness and resentment because their candidate was rejected.
Mitt Romney was never my choice, and could not have been. The man practically oozed insincerity, flip-flopped on vital issues, pandered for votes, approved and ran smear-campaign ads against his principal challengers, and THEN...in the greatest traitorous flip-flop of all...dropped out and prematurely accorded his pledged delegates to McCain. His action resulted in a disenfranchised, disillusioned GOP electorate with an unwanted nominee shoved down our throats as the party brass "coalesced" around him.
Mitt Romney most likely has cost Republicans this presidential election.
(PLEASE don't tell me he did it for party unity- he did it for Mitt Romney's political future, period.)
If he's McCain's VP, it will just be one more reason I will not support the ticket.

bethidee
You may not have been paying close enough attention. There is NO anti-Christian sentiment in the LDS community, but a lot of disdain for the way Huck used religion to exploit anti-Mormon feelings among some evangelicals. You are really stetching to say that Mormons are anti-Christian, and it makes me wonder what your motive is.

Yes, there is bitterness and resentment and it comes from the way Huck was able to use religion in a decidedly un-American way against Romney.

For the most part, LDS folks liked Romney not necessarily because he was Mormon, but because he was the most qualified conservative running. (Harry Reid is NOT a favorite among LDS!)

People who don't see what Huckabee did in the proper light are probably not capable of understanding that Romney was by far the best choice for the GOP in decades. It is a huge loss, and we are stuck with McCain because of the Huckster and his dirty deed, not because of anything Romney did. He ran an excellent campaign that was torpedoed by Huck, McCain and the MSM.

Perfect post, number44!
Having read all the posts since leaving for a busy Sunday, I read yours.

"Long past tired of zedsmom: Six posts in a row? Seriously, how many people do you expect to read all that crap? More importantly, how many people do you expect to convert?"

Perfect subject line!

"Readers who aren't Mormon are already not Mormon. Anyone who IS Mormon has already heard everything you just said. They're still Mormon, except now they think you're an a$$."

Perfect last clause!

"I'm not Mormon, and I think Mormonism is a false religion, but many Americans think Christianity is a false religion. God can sort it out, eventually, but in the meantime let's be grown ups about this. Look at a candidate's policies, experience, and character to decide what kind of President he'll be, not where he goes to church."

Perfect! Or very nearly.

Look: _everyone_ believes some things simply because they want to, irrespective of the evidence. Whether it be crystal healing, that Jesus rose from the dead, Joseph Smith found golden plates, or that Hillary tells the truth.

The beliefs our candidates hold in one sense are irrelevant. So what if the candidate has magic underwear? Crystals? OTOH, if they *really believe* in crystal healing and intend to impose that belief on our health care, that's a major issue.

That's what makes Romney safe enough. He believes, but he can separate his beliefs from policy. It's also, in my judgement, makes Huckabee so dangerous: He actually *believes* this stuff.

If he wouldn't act on it, why are you all so keen to have him in power?

PC is a dreamer
Romney will not be McCain's running mate.

Only Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming have a population of Mormons over 8% (2005 numbers). A big deal in Utah and Idaho (and maybe Wyoming), but elsewhere is a non-issue.

Baptist Bigotry is Okay
I am amazed at the number of threads that;
a) bash Huckabee for being a Christian and
b) bash Huckabee for telling the truth about Mormon belief (the pc version reads 'Mormon Bigot')

You are fine with dismissing Huckabee for his religious beliefs, yet excoriate him for 'Mormon bigotry'.

Brilliant....

Tadpole what is your point?
If Huck is VP, Mormons won't support McCain in large numbers. There are millions of Mormon voters so it could make a difference.

But, Romney as VP has nothing to do with Mormon votes. It has everything to do with conservatism, competence, and Romney's qualifications. He has no skeletons, admirable character and integrity, an excellent record of success as governor, in business and in his personal life. No surprises with Romney. He also gained the majority of conservative support before he dropped out.

He would be a hugh asset to McCain and may be the only one who cah put McCain over the top.

Tadpole - nobody bashes Huck
for being Christian and you know it. He is criticized because he used his religious beliefs as a politcal weapon in a deceptiful and decidedly un-Christian way. Not only is Huck not dismissed FOR his beliefs, we just wish he would LIVE his beliefs and act like the Christian he professes to be!

If you think what Huck did against the LDS faith and millions of Mormons is acceptable, then you are beyond help.

correction
Romeny and McCain will be on Hannity & Colmes TUESDAY MARCH 11, Not Monday, March 10. Whew!

Got your acting shoes warmed up, Mr. Huckabee? This might be the big one!

I support Romney not just because he's LDS, but because he's a class act. Because he is smart and knows the economy better than anyone around. Because unlike Huckabee, he's run a business or two, and has been totally successful in that arena. I support Romeny because I see the fruits of his family. Ok, he strapped a dog cage onto the station wagon back in the 70's, but it beats tying a dog to a tree and torturing it until it's dead ala Huckabee's kid. Romney does not remind me of the guys who have laid me off. And I've been laid off a time or two in my lifetime. I understand business and always, without fail got a better job than I just left. Huckabee reminds me not of the guy who laid me off, but the guy who tried to get me fired for my religious beliefs, and tired to do it very quiet and 'stealth' like. I did get fired, but got the upper hand when I was brought onto a company for better pay. Then, that company bought the previous company, and the guy worked FOR ME! oh, was that ever sweet!

Not trying to convert anyone
The first posts were about his very liberal, liberal positions and his business problems. No one seems to deny that. The last were for the onslaught of Mormon posters who keep bashing Christians and Huckabee. How does that make anyone "accept" the Mormon candidate they say lost due to a "whisper campaign" that allegedly started in Iowa? He spent mega bucks with poor results. No answers, just bashing. I am surprised I wasn't called a "bigot", again. That is usually the ploy when there is no factual argument to the facts presented. Romney LOST. Get over it.

zedsmom
"Romney LOST. Get over it."

Bravo! Well said! I'm getting sick and tired of Romney's supporters blaming his defeat on "anti-Mormon bigotry." Some people, such as myself, had problems with Romney that went far beyond his religion.

Republicans need to quit all this whining about "bigotry" and "victimhood." They're starting to sound like Democrats.

PC
Your idea that Mike used his beliefs as a devisive issue in his campaign is just not true!!! Please provide one instance of proof were Huckabee basically presented a comment or commercial stating "vote for me, I am a Christian and Romney is a Mormon?"

Also, anyone who claims that Baptists want to setup up a theocracy need to read history. The term "Separation of Church and State," was provided by Thomas Jefferson to Baptists!!! An American Baptist distinction is separation of church and state. Let me clarify that this does not mean that Baptists or anyone else shouldn't get involved into politics but basically that the Government should NEVER setup a State religion.

I, as a Baptist, DO NOT want the Baptist denomination or Christianity to be the State religion. I dislike the faith based programs proposed by Bush as any money given by the Federal Government to religious organizations will eventually come with string attached. I say these things to let you know that the Baptist community as a whole rejects the idea of a theocracy. Can we please put this absurd claim to rest?

zedsmom, Ken, and sdogg
Mormons don't bash Christians - it's the other way around and anyone who reads TH knows it. Mormons do point out Huckabee's actions and how they affected the race. "Get over it" and stop lying about what is really going on.

Everyone knows that Huckabee's anti-Mormon tactics helped him win Iowa. He would never have won that state without playing sleazy politics.

I don't mind when Romney is criticized for legitimate, and TRUE things.

sdogg - His "innocent" question to the NYT reporter that was anything but innocent. Many, many times Huck used Christianity to get votes. He compared himself to Jesus numerous times, and to David slaying Goliath. Saying he didn't know anything about Mormonism when he was involved as the main speaker at an anti-Mormon convention. The floating cross was transparently silly. But it didn't take much for evangelicals to "get" his sly implications. And that question to the reporter packed a HUGE punch.

Come on, sdogg. You already know all this. Shame on you. You are complicit to bigotry, and that makes you an enabler or a bigot yourself.

PC
Must you label everyone who disagrees with you as a bigot?

I don't care
for Huckabee myself but it has nothing to do with his religion. I am a Christian, myself. I just did not like some of the things he said or did and I felt he was too liberal for me.

PC - Nobody?
Give me a break. Every debate there was a focus on his faith. Networks made a point of putting on people that said they were not voting for a 'Preacher-in-chief'. Huckabee was as often introduced as 'Former Baptist Preacher' as he was 'Former Governor of Arkansas'... maybe more often.

Besides, what exactly did Gov Huckabee do against the LDS faith and millions of Mormons?

Huck wasn't my choice and never will be
McLame hater writes: Sunday, March, 09, 2008

"Your presence in the race did nothing more than give John "Mr. Amnesty" McCain a free pass to the Republican nomination. Now, conservatives have no one to vote for in the general election. Now then, if you love the thought of amnesty for illegal aliens, this election offers you triple the pleasure of loons for whom to vote."

Unfortunately I agree. The problem for me was just that I found no one worthy of my vote. I won't vote for anyone who had been a pastor; no offense, but those are just 2 worlds I'd like to see separate. Romney was OK on fiscal issues, not so good on social issues, probably pretty good on foreign policy issues. 2 out of 3, the stool still falls. However, I do believe that he would be the frontrunner had the Huckster not managed to hold onto (albeit large) a rather homogenous part of the conservative movement. Pastor Mike will never woo more than the sizeable and committed religious right. In his insolence, he wouldn't or couldn't recognize this.

And now, just McCain is left standing. Thanks Huck man, you gave us the only Republican candidate in my voting life time more dull and ineffective than Bob Dole.

And to you Mr. Stokes, your observations fall down in two ways. First, this isn't 1976 and Huck is no Ronald Reagan. And secondly, though it was the blue/bloods who foisted the capable but public dunce, G. Ford, upon the party, we have the Huck to thank for John McCain.

Ken - of course not
And I don't. But I also don't think it's good to paper over the bigotry directed at Mormons. It's not good for America. Like I said, I don't mind it when people oppose Romney for LEGITIMATE reasons.

My main gripe with Huckabee is his bigotry, but his lying, his lack of moral fiber, his shabby tactics, his foolishness, his inadequate intellect, and his liberalism are also enough for me to never support him. There is nothing that could ever convince me to vote for him. Ever. I would reject any ticket with his name on it.

PC
For someone who claims to oppose bigotry, your statements about Huckabee sound awfully bigoted. I say the proverbial pot is once again calling the kettle black.

PC - What I know
is that anytime someone say 'we all know' or 'everyone knows it' that it is rarely the case.

Gov Huckabee had two choices - separate his faith from his candidacy or integrate it. Since there are few that would engage him strictly on political issues without a discussion of his Baptist faith he chose to integrate it.

Why aren't Mormons considered anti-Christian for voting so overwhelmingly for a Mormon?

PC
Stop turning over rocks looking for excuses and arguments as to why Romeny lost. ROMNEY LOST. He lost on his own merit or lack of merit in the eyes of far more voters than have ever considered his religion. He made money in business. Look at the criminal prosecution I referenced. Was he ethical in business? It doesn't seem so.

This is the wrong subject.

1. His entire public persona is plastic and artificial.
2. He and his campaign ran sleazy attack ads against his primary competition.
3. He embraced certain social issues as Massachusetts' Governor, only to reject them later when inconvenient to his GOP presidential platform.
4. Nothing about him is inspirational or motivational- he is a singularly wooden and unappealing candidate.
I beg to differ on the anti-Christian sentiment I've seen on the part of LDS church members. I read the Deseret News online enough to see just how blatant it is.
In addition, this campaign was not about religion, despite the media's best efforts. Christianity and Mormonism should not have played so prominent a role in an election where vital issues like immigration reform, border security, tax reform, American sovereignty, Second Amendment righta, and many others should've been center stage.
Instead, we watched moderators of important debates ask Huckabee the "God" questions over and over, ignoring his remarkably insightful and intelligent stands on the issues.
Instead, we got millions of bitter Mitt supporters crying "Anti-Mormon!" at every rejection of their candidate.
What a waste.

bethidee
you nailed it. This election should be 'about immigration reform, border security, tax reform, American sovereignty, Second Amendment rights...'

I'd just put border security first...

Huckbots are scary
These bloggers are crazy. I thought this was a political site, not a religious bigot fest.

Fact is Huck was a disgrace to what ever religion he believes in. To have Judicial Watch, a very reputable organisation, have Huckabee in the top 10 most wanted corrupt politicians is a disgrace to the character of Huckabee. I trust Judicial Watch on this call. They investigate the grubby politicians. They out them. Huckabee has been outed as a corrupt politician.

He is not a conservative. In Arkansas, Conservative GOP politicians called Huck “Socialist Mike”.

To have this article say thank you is a joke. The man was the most mean spirited, self loving person on the campaign trail (on the GOP side). To the Huckbots, if you suport him because of his church, just say so, but don't insult our intelligence by saying he is a good man.

smreiter... You are right
Huck did give us McCain. They are twins when it comes to issues of character. (This is not a compliment.) They played tag on Romney, did more back flips than an Olympic gymnast and gave conservatives a choice between someone who beat up conservatives in the Senate and someone who beat up conservatives in Arkansas. What a choice!!!

You can only blame the GOP though. It was the voter who left the two worst candidates standing.

Observer
And for those who like Romney because of his religion and ignore his vacillations between far liberal and unproven conservative, why don't they have the integrity to say so? Or for those who like Romney because of his religion and ignore what he did at Bain Capital, resulting in many lawsuits and a criminal prosecution, why don't they just say so? When those facts are presented, I am called a bigot. Considering there are no factual arguments presented to refute what I presented, I stand on firm, solid, correct ground.

Observer
Let's see... Huckabee inherited a $200M+ deficit, raised taxes by $500M over 10 years, improved roads & education, and left with a surplus of $850M? That's over a 100% return on your money over 10 years, my friend.

Call it Conservative or not, I call it good investment of tax dollars.

You know who else is in the top 10
of Judicial Watch's 'Most Corrupt'?... Scooter Libby.

You know, the guy that wasn't guilty of releasing a non-covert CIA agent's identity to the press yet was found guilty of perjury?

Give me a big time break, with that one 'appointment' they lost all credibility with me.

Tadpole
And you can add that, when Huckabee (more than a one term governor)took office, the state income tax for the poorest was 1% and for the wealthiest 7%. When he left office, it was exactly the same. No governor does anything by himself, but when the voters approved the income tax surcharge to cover court mandated school improvements, Huckabee followed through on seeing it repealed three years later. He doubled the standard deduction and child care credit, repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, and expanded homestead exemption. He set up tax free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition. He got voter approval of 1/8 of one cent to improve parks and recreation. He raised sales taxes one cent in almost eleven years. The voters approved that.
That doesn't sound like a bad record to me.

The Best Candidate We Had...
WTG, tadpole!
I am sick and tired of people attacking Huckabee by quoting purported "facts" found online- you can find just about any kind of dirt on any candidate online, with a simple search. Doesn't mean it's true.
His record as Arkansas' Governor was exemplary! To those who keep trying to beat that particular dead horse: how come he was re-elected?
C'mon, people- look past your prejudices and you'll find he's a man of integrity and intelligence, with some great ideas for this country's future.

bethidee
He got re-elected in a predominately Democratic state and dealt with a Democratic state legislature.

The idea that he dashed a multi-millionaire's hope for the nomination is ludicrous. How much money did Huckabee have for his campaign compared to even Ron Paul.

Wake up Romney supporters! PEOPLE VOTED! And, everyone who ran for the nomination was entitled to run if they wanted. ROMNEY LOST!

You Huckbots make me laugh
Get a brain. If you vote for religion say it. But don't make the laughable claim he is a good man. His history does not support it. he has been outed as corrupt. He has been outed as hostile to conservatives. You so easily dismiss the experiences of those who actually had to work with this joker. Reading comments from the Huckbots makes me think they are pretty similar to the man himself.

Commendations to Huckabee supporters
I am a Huckabee supporter as well and have popped in and out of this discussion.

In reading recent posts, it amazes me how anti-Huckabee folks knee-cap Huckabee whenever they can with half-truths and mischaracterizations but when confronted with full-truths they fall back to name-calling. The religious aspects of this discussion are amazing...

I posted the following on another discussion:
-------------
I went to maps.google.com and did a search on Utah... Then did a search on businesses with the search criteria being "Southern Baptist Church" and then did the same for "Latter Day Saints Church" in Arkansas & I got the following:

Results 1-10 of about 1,738 for Southern Baptist Church near Utah

Results 1-10 of about 8,662 for Latter Day Saints Church near Arkansas

It sure seems to me that the LDS faith is fairly well represented in AR... It may make sense for those who insist on playing the bigotry issue to call there brethren in Arkansas and ask if what they think about Huckabee... You might learn a little something that will surprise you.
-------

Thus far, no response. It appears that the folks intent on attacking have no intent on learning the truth. Sad...

Observer must = paid party surrogate
Come on Observer... admit it. You are a lobbyist who has his hand in the cookie jar of the 66,000 page tax code aren't you...

Toss anything you want out there that you can't substantiate. We know your game.

One thing though... do you have kids? Nephews? Nieces? Any investment in younger generations...? If so, shame on you for selling them out. Huckabee, the FairTax, and common sense politics are our only hope & you are working adverse to all that is good.

YK

Huckbots ... I'm laughing harder
Why is it that criticism from those who actually have experience with Huck are telling half truths, but your criticisms of other candidates "are the truth"? You guys kid yourself. This is like the Huck saying the two most honorable campaigns made it to the end. What self loving. What an insult to the campaigns of Brownback, Giuliani, Hunter, Paul, Romney, Tancredo, and Thompson.

Give me a break. Do you Huckbots really think Huck is as good as he thinks he is??? Do you really think the conservatives who have called him corrupt and critcised him for being liberal on taxes, spending, immigration and pardongate are only telling half truths??? Do you guys really know more than the poor conservatives he used to beat up on? Stop having yourself on.

Experience?
"Why is it that criticism from those who actually have experience with Huck are telling half truths"

Observer, what experience, exactly, are you referring to?

Observer = no substance = no credibility
So... remind me again on where you differ with Huckabee?

- FairTax?
---- Extremely positive for the economy
---- Extremely helpful to make gov't more transparent
- ProLife?
- Pro 2nd Amendment
- Secure Borders?
- No Amnesty Pledge?
- Stabilize the middle east?
- Common Sense health initiatives?

Don't just give your bottle-fed regurgitation...

Observer
"It was the voter who left the two worst candidates standing." You are partially right. Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee both chose to stay in the race along with John McCain. Romney chose not to spend any more of his millions. IT WAS THE VOTERS who made the ultimate decision. This is still a democracy, isn't it?
Distort records and call names all you want. That doesn't reflect on me. If the conversation had been on any other candidates, I would set forth facts to stop the distortions of those who can do nothing more than call names.

Zedsmom
don't you have some homeschooling to study for? or even an anti-mormon rally to attend? Huck is a LOSER in the biggest sences. This week, you'll see McCain and Romney together, on the stump. A vision of things to come? Most likely, as all the signs and wonders and porint that way. Wouldent I love to be a fly on the wall when blood shoots out Huckabees eyes, when he learns - from the nightly news not less - that he's OUT and Romney's IN? Oh, the sweetnesss of it all. And we won't miss your vote one bit. Romeny has the west, the east and the North. Besides, I'd rather have a quality voter than an quanity voter, like you anyday.

Mormons didnot vote for
Senate Majority Leader Harry Ried. But that's a different mattter, eh? I love and adore the double standards set forth by those like 'zeldsmom', etc. You go to your little church, clap your hands and play with the snakes and listen with baite breath to every thing your pastor spews out. As for me and my house.... well, some know the rest.

I'llvote for the Baptist/Mormon ticket. McCain/Romney 08.

By the way, You can catch both of them on Tuesday, March 11 on Hannity. Bet that makes your shorts curl up!

Qweenmumof7
Qweenmumof7, you have reached a new level of disgusting in this discussion. Your stupidity is obvious in both your remarks and your spelling.
If you want to participate in a credible way, I suggest a dictionary and some therapy.

Get real Huckbots
Huckbots, because I don’t support your candidate, you think I must have a religious bias, or I must be a paid consultant. Sorry to disappoint on both counts. My wife and I started off liking the Huck. It was her who brought him to my attention. However, I have a high regard for Judicial Watch for the work they did on Clinton. So when they call Huck corrupt, I listen. I listen when Novak gives the stories on Huck fighting conservatives in the Baptist church. I listen when the conservative Arkansas GOP congressmen call Huck “Socialist Mike”. I listen to them give Hucks record on taxes, spending, immigration and pardons. You see, it was the conservatives who were fighting him on these issues. I listen to the respected conservative commentators who have bagged the Huck out. So I have morphed from someone who liked Mike to someone who sees him as a TOTAL fraud.

Then I ask myself, why do the Huckbots continue to support a corrupt person with such an appalling history. That is for you to answer. I suspect the bigotry you see in others is actually in yourselves. I suspect you want to believe he is a good person because he goes to your church. Well wake up and smell the roses guys. You’ve been deceived.

Observer...
Hard to believe that a Republican governor in a Democrat-controlled legislature will be attacked for ethics... hmmm.

You listen to what "the establishment" wants you to listen to. Who was the biggest threat to "the establishment"? You guessed it. Every other serious candidate has already agreed to play by the party rules and be beholden to the party bosses. Toss a serious discussion about the FairTax at a party boss and he is immediately threatened with potential loss of all of those tasty cookies that they have worked so hard make transparent to the rest of us.

I suppose you believe in the "Club for Growth" and the Tooth Fairy as well...

Qweenmumof7-- your own words
"Your a bad missionary for your faith, if all you spew is vile, mis information and hate for your fellow man, who happens to take a different route in life."

Ma'am, you have done nothing but.

Observer-- I started out liking Romney, but became more uneasy with him as the campaign wore on. I had doubts initially about his recent pro-life conversion, but accepted his explanation which lined up with my experience with Mormons. But the more he pandered on other issues, the less comfortable I got. "The only true conservative" mantle that Hewitt tried to put on him never did ring clear with me. And the more I heard Hewitt assail evangelicals, the less I trusted his analysis of Huckabee's record. Also, I am reading Reagan's diaries-- he had some problems with the conservatives also in their absolutism on certain things without regard to the political realities. Living in a state that has been "cultural democrat" for a very long time before turning red (our current Gov is the first GOP since reconstruction), I give any tax increases foisted upon Huckabee a pass. I suspected that Huckabee wasn't being given a fair shake--certainly not by Hewitt. I pulled the lever for Romney in my primary, but I don't think I would do it a second time.

Huckbots
You still haven't said why you ignore conservatives about the corruption and treachery of Huck. Do you know him better than these good conservatives who criticise him? Are you conservatives or are you liberals. Do you like his back flips? What are you so expert in that make you know more than Judicial Watch, Club for Growth, Novak, Coulter etc etc.

You still have not said what makes these people wrong and you so right about the Huck. I suspect you are a fellow church goer and do not care about his corruption and deciet.

To Observer/Listener/Follower
Observer, your suspicion about my reasons for supporting Huckabee is absolutely wrong. It has nothing to do with church whatsoever. I don't even attend church, and if I did, it wouldn't be a Baptist congregation.
As I have pointed out again and again, I support him because of his stands on the issues I feel are vital to the future of this country. I support him because he has executive experience. Because he's the best communicator we've seen in the GOP since Reagan...but not because he's Christian.
As Yt_Knight said, is it really hard for you to believe allegations (outrageous ones, many of them) were made against a dyed-in-the-wool Republican governor in an overwhelmingly Democrat state?
(I'm sure you won't listen to me, anyway, because I'm not a voice on the radio, directing your next move...but you should.)

What civil discourse
Townhall must be owned and operated by Mormons, atheists, secularists, liberals. That would be fine if comments from these camps consisted of facts, logic, courtesy, and civil discourse. But the majority of what one reads is not the least informative, interesting, or even pleasant. So much is negative, vitriolic, caustic, resentful, intolerant, hateful, and just plain mean.

Qweenie, PC and friends repeat the same thing over and over again with such un-Christian name-calling that any useful information is lost in a vat of venom. Their favorite words are bigot and liar. Great way to shine a positive light on Christianity. I expect some who read such comments would become atheists in order to not be associated with such hard-hearted, mean-spirited people.

Observer could stand to remove the rose colored glasses while reading Judicial Watch and others. I've read JW newsletters for a long time. Good stuff, but they got lazy on the Huckabee corruption you cite. Judicial Watch did no independent research on that; they merely repeated assertions of Club for Growth. The Club for Growth was paid to do this "research" on Huckabee. Who paid? Mr. Romney. Do your own research to find the facts amidst the hype. The charges, as has been pointed out extensively, were all found to be unfounded and frivolous filed by disgruntled Democrats. As to Novak, Coulter (and Hewitt, Limbaugh, Hannity whom you didn't mention), they present opinions, not facts. They are not investigative journalists, they merely opine. Did you believe Coulter when she called Edwards the "f" word?

Good grief . . . and good bye!
