The Orwellian Presidential Bully Pulpit

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Does the following statement from Melody C. Barnes, director of President Barack Obama's Domestic Policy Council, strike you as a) patronizing or b) Orwellian? "The president believes that it's particularly important to sign this (presidential memorandum authorizing federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research) so that we can put science and technology back at the heart of pursuing a broad range of national goals."

Your answer should be both a and b, especially when considered in conjunction with another presidential memorandum "aimed at insulating scientific decisions across the federal government from political influence."

The president brazenly sermonizes against scientifically challenged conservatives while triggering federal funding of research that is scientifically controversial and preparing to impose cap and trade penalties on corporate America in deference to global warming junk science.

While you won't hear much about this in the mainstream media, there is a meeting currently taking place in New York City that serves as an ironic backdrop for Obama's embryonic stem cell order.

OneNewsNow.com reports that more than 70 scientists -- representing the views of tens of thousands more scientists -- are meeting at The Heartland Institute's second annual International Conference on Climate Change to make the case that politically motivated alarmism, not science, is driving climate change activism, which potentially threatens the sovereignty of the United States.

At the conference, European Union and Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus likened those pushing global warming hysteria to the communists of Old Europe, who refused to listen to opposing views. Their goal, Klaus warned, is to control the public.

Sounds familiar. The Obama administration repeatedly implements policies that are in direct contradiction to its benign rhetoric, which is what I mean by "Orwellian." Consider its fiscal recklessness accompanied by promises of fiscal responsibility, including its staggering denial that it is promoting earmarks. Or its boasts of bipartisanship while shutting Republicans out of the legislative process. Or calling its plan to chill an employee's choice to opt out of union membership the "Employee Free Choice Act."

But Obama's statements while introducing his embryonic stem cell executive order truly take the cake. He said: "But after much discussion, debate and reflection, the proper course has become clear. The majority of Americans, from across the political spectrum and from all backgrounds and beliefs, have come to a consensus that we should pursue this research -- that the potential it offers is great, and with proper guidelines and strict oversight, the perils can be avoided."

It would take several columns to parse that statement alone, but just look at the misleading phraseology: "The majority of Americans … have come to a consensus." Assuming a majority favors embryonic stem cell research -- and even federal taxpayer funding for it -- is it not deceptive to imply that a majority constitutes a consensus?

Of course, those who agree on a proposition always share a consensus among themselves, but doesn't "consensus" suggest that there is almost unanimity on the issue?

The answer is yes. The Obama left repeatedly uses this type of language to manufacture the impression that only a fringe minority disagrees with the overwhelmingly accepted majority view. They declare a consensus when there isn't one and bully the true opposition from voicing their concerns. They do it with global warming, embryonic stem cell research, "intelligent design" theory and now Keynesian economics.

They have plenty of help from the liberal lapdog media. They dutifully report that Obama is lifting a ban on embryonic stem cell research when there has been no ban on such research, only a restriction on federal funding for it. Nowhere do they acknowledge the genuine ethical objections to or the scientific problems that have been encountered in such research. Instead, they just portray opponents of federal subsidies for the practice as Luddites.

While the left ridicules those who don't buy into their decreed "consensuses," they are the ones who suppress scientific inquiry and debate on various issues. They are the ones who suppress publication of facts that contradict their agenda.

You'll rarely hear from them about the failures and hazards of embryonic stem cell research, such as a report that embryonic cells injected into a boy caused multiple brain tumors. You'll never hear them speak about the increasing successes of adult stem cell research, even though adult stem cell science is less expensive, more accessible, probably involves less cancer-causing risk, and is not ethically controversial.

Beware; when the Obama left mounts its rhetorical high horse and tells us it is advancing science in furtherance of a consensus, it is most likely signaling that it is implementing a highly controversial, scientifically dubious policy whose opposition it intends to intimidate and silence with the formidable force of the presidential bully pulpit.

Ranger29
Considering your side won the election Ranger29 and are having your socialist wet dream coming true why do you bother trying to debate over at a right wing site?

You seriously need to seek help if you can't help yourself by coming over here and farting in the chat room.

You are such a pathetic loser.

Ranger29
Once again Ranger29 the article explains it is Orwellian language to say it is a ban on stem cell research that was lifted. The only thing that was restricted was taxpayers funding it.

You need to go let your farts somewhere else.

Ranger29?
Is this guy for real?
Is the 29 his I.Q.?
Just thought I'd ask.

ok
Coming from a family with background in the hard sciences [physics], I can safely say that real scientists are conservative. Now you can push the "right wing whackos" out of science, and what you got left are left wing liars. And fools, politicians, Wangers, but I repeat myself.

Glen in OH
I don't know whether your questions regarding Ranger29 are real or rhetorical, because I don't know if you're a relative newcomer to TownHall, but if you want the lowdown on Ranger29, go to Burt Prelutsky's current thread and read MyOpine's 10:34 pm post.

There are almost no conservatives who post here regularly who regard Ranger29 as anything other than a pathological liar. I personally don't respond to him directly because I see no point in trying to have a dialogue with someone with whom nothing he says can be taken at face value.

Ranger29
"...you people are so easy to blow logically out of the water, blah, blah, blah..."

And yet, we see no evidence of this in any of your posts.

Glen in OH: Ranger29 redux
Oh, just in case you don't know: every morning at 8:00 am, Ranger29's posts are deleted from every thread he's posted on. So if you come onto this site tomorrow morning and wonder why he has suddenly become, a la Orwell's 1984, an "unperson", you'll know why.

This treatment he gets daily on this site should tell you everything you need to know about him even without checking out the MyOpine post earlier tonight that I referred to previously.

Stop the Lies
It amazes me the laziness of the media and so many people. There was never a ban on stem cell research, there was a ban on embryonic stem cell research that caused the scientist to create or destroy embryos.

Furthermore, under President Bush funding for stem cell research increased. That is why scientists were able to conduct research that led to the development of stem cells from a person's skin cells.

Chalk up another in the Culture of Death of the Democratic Party.

Follow the Money . . .
There is one group that REALLY stands to gain from this stem-cell signing by Obama, and that's the abortion industry. They are the ones who've been pushing for this reversal of Bush's ban on use of embryonic stem cells. It has nothing to do with scientific research - and EVERYTHING to do with further justifying the existence of Planned Parenthood in particular and the entire abortion lobby in general.

Standshisground
Thanks for the info on Ranger29. I didn't really believe that he meant to be taken seriously. After reading his response to my post, I'm not sure anyone could.

Brightness Lesson
Rush signs a 200plus million 5 year contract.

Wobbie lives in Mommy's basement.

Lesson ends.

Back to the Subject
When President Bush explained on the air that we would continue to fund research for the lines of embryonic stem cells already in use, but not create any more new lines by aborting embryos or in-vitro fertilization and then destruction, the cry became "He's banning research!!"

This was patently untrue.

Most of the advances in medical cures using stem cells come from adult stem cell research, like the woman in England who grew a new throat from adult stem cells.

So much lying, obfuscation and hper ventilation over nothing.

BTW, I support abortion. More liberals should have them.

What are you talking about Hard Thought
When you say more liberals should have abortions? Liberals are the afterbirth of their parents abortions. The parents threw away the kids and kept the afterbirth just to guarantee that their progeny was spineless and gutless.

Especially in Wobbie's case.

BTW, One of these days
Since Wobbie thinks he "pistol whips"(in his mind anyhow) everyone he "debates," and he doesn't know anythng about guns, maybe on one of those occassions when he's "pistol whipping" himself, we'll be lucky enough that he'll be holding the "gun" by the barrel and when he hits himself with the butt, the gun will go off and hit Wobbie right between the eyes.

Not that the bullet would hit his brain and kill him(you can't hit and kill what doesn't exist), but it will let all the hot air out and his head will just deflate.

R29:The Limbaughs pay boatloads in taxes
because they are republicans. Its in the Democrat party where you can find the tax cheats (Geithner, Daschle, Solis, etc) and welfare recipients who don't pay taxes.

More insight on Obama
Ranger29, or whomever is writing under your pseudonym tonight, here is a significant argument for why Obama is a socialist:

Marine's Dad
You may be right. That could be why they are so slimy and smarmy.

EMBRYONIC STEM CELL HYPOCRISY
If embryonic stem cell research is so vitally important for the cure of degenerative diseases than where was the Left all these years in raising private funds for research? Where were the stars and moguls of Hollywood and the liberal media in raising consciousness about the revolutionary cures that would be found if enough money was raised to finance research? Eight years and the lefties sat on their fat do nothing arses making no attempt to so much as raise a dime for the cause! Instead the hypocrites used the issue as a political battleax to slam George Bush and make him look like a mindless cretin while not showing a scintilla of genuine concern for the suffering millions who badly needed this research. And now we have the biggest lying hypocrite of them all pretending to banish the dark ages of the Bush Era and returning the light of science and reason to the White House and Washington. What a joke! Maybe stem cell reserach will find a cure for the wretched sickening degenerative disease of liberalism; or maybe Barack Obama and the massive failure of government will be the cure.

MORE FROM COMRADE MAOBAMA

(Click on my name to check it out!)

ExRCSD Deputy
You did not have to wait long!

I'd bet a 1000.00 that Rush pays more in taxes than Robert aka Ranger 29 makes in a year.

Liberal class and wealth envy is a pathetic trait of a whiny victim.

The Father of Lies
Obama, our radical congress, and some of the comments on this site remind me of what Jesus said: "Why can't you understand what I am saying? It's because you can't even hear me! For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don't believe me!" John 8:43-46

For radicals it really is a consensus. Every reasonable person believes it's good to kill babies - for the scientific welfare of mankind. Every reasonable person believes that government is the source of every good thing. Every reasonable person believes that government needs to make sure that wealth is equally shared. Every reasonable person believes that we are nothing more than dangerous animals.

I think it's revealing that Saul Alinsky dedicated his 'Rules for Radicals' to Lucifer.

“Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology, and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins — or which is which), the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom — Lucifer.”

Can we expect any less from Saul Alinsky's disciples than a continued worship of Lucifer and his lying and murderous ways; for the common good of course.

Ranger29
"you people are so easy to blow..."

Sounds like you're an expert in the field. Small wonder you're a liberal.

GunnyG
Good morning to ya.

Great post on your blog.

It's fun watching all the gaffes and blunders on the Obama Comedy Hour. The way he's going, the show will definitely be over by January 2013.

LOL

Apollo: You NAILED THAT ONE!

"And now we have the biggest lying hypocrite of them all pretending to banish the dark ages of the Bush Era and returning the light of science and reason to the White House and Washington."

For someone who, when asked, "At what point does a baby get human rights?" claimed that it "is above my pay grade" Bozo is making some pretty lofty decisions.

The longer Bozo is on office, the more we're finding out what else is above his pay grade!

Perhaps stem cell research will find a cure for the wretched sickening degenerative disease of liberalism, but there seems to be an element of evil involved here too.

When asked if evil exists and if so how it should be handled, Obama answered, "we see evil all the time," individuals will not be able to "erase evil from the world. That is God's task."

Perhaps he knew MORE on the subject of evil
than we gave him credit for.

David
But Obama's statements while introducing his embryonic stem cell executive order truly take the cake. He said: "But after much discussion, debate and reflection, the proper course has become clear..."

LMAO to claim that an embryo is laughable. It is a potential human. To have preachers setting policy is silly. To deny evolution is silly when it is part and parcel of all the progress science has made over the last nearly 200 years. Stick your head in the sand all you want; we choose to go forward....

Actually, what's laughable and silly is YOU!

"To deny evolution is silly when it is part and parcel of all the progress science has made over the last nearly 200 years."

Really? HA HA HA HA HA HA

"Evolution" has proven NOTHING! And scientists have NOT proven that there is anything to evolution. Get it? NOTHING!

And, we ALL KNOW EXACTLY where you've stuck your head! How long has it been since you've seen the sun?

The White House liar-in-chief is a master at the Orwellian art of newspeak.

There is no consensus on the subject of embryonic stem cell research.

There is no consensus on global warming - certainly not among the scientists themselves. There is only intentionally induced hysteria.

Thank you for pointing this out.

Liberal Trolls Are Paid To Come Here!
This comment is directed to any newcomers to Townhall. Most of the Liberal "Trolls" who comment here are PAID to comment at Conservative sites.

The reason they are paid to do so is simple. First, they disrupt the "flow" of Conservative ideas.

Second, they are able to "bully" any moderate who expressses any concept different than the Liberal "Talking Points".

To be sure, some of them are highly intelligent and have admirable backgrounds. But also be sure they are paid to comment at Conservative sites.

Watch the comments of some of the "long time" commentators here at Townhall. Men like "GunnyG", who served in the US Marines and Ladies like "Anne of PA". When you see some one attack them, in a manner that approaches almost pure hatred, then you have "spotted" a Liberal Troll.

Beyond the moral
issues of a society cannibalizing its children, something no one ever talks about is embryonic stem cells cause cancer and other uncontrollable cell growth. So it appears that those seeking such treatment may get more than they asked for.

The other issue is that adult stem cells have been used successfully for 40+ years to treat disease. Obviously the push for embryonic stem cells is more about promoting a culture of death than anything else.

Great Article, David
Thanks, David. Your article is right on-point!

doofass! Whatever "consensus" there

might be is, there is NO VALUE in embryonic stem cell research. The ONLY SUCCESS has been in adult cell research!

And, in case someone hasn't actually read the column to you yet, Limbaugh notes....

"... more than 70 scientists -- representing the views of tens of thousands more scientists -- are meeting at The Heartland Institute's second annual International Conference on Climate Change to make the case that politically motivated alarmism, not science, is driving climate change activism, which potentially threatens the sovereignty of the United States."

Did you get that part??? "... politically motivated alarmism, not science, ... potentially threatens the sovereignty of the United States."

If you could only get 70 scientists
that's about as close to a consensus as you could get. That's about the attendance of Holocaust Denier conventions. Certifiably whacky.

Hey I am a retired military guy and served as I said. Do you have a problem with that or are you making fun of my service? Those are the facts. I do not advertise them unless my service is questioned.

David In AK
There was a ban on Government funding for embryonic stem cells. Private researchers had venture capitalists to fund the research they were doing. 22 years ago I did a position paper on the the use of stem cells and cures for disease.
At that time, they said Parkinson's, Diabetes and Paralysis could potentially be cured by using fetal stem cells.

Here we are today, and surprise, why is there no FetalGen company out there for all the promise fetal cells have shown? Why are the venture capitalists not breaking down the doors?

Because, David, There is no interest in what does not work. Adult stem cells have yielded much more success than any fetal cell research. Therefore, if 22 years has not caused more "immediate" research promise, then WTF?

Well, I'll tell you WTF!! The POTUS is using taxpayer dollars to pay back his cronies. AGAIN. The private companies have done the work, advancement is slow going. Why cost the taxpayer money on something that has been tried and failed? To pay back his cronies. And you are too blind to see, like the rest of your ilk would rather cheer him on than admit he's WRONG, WRONG,WRONG!!

Doofus And the Founding Fathers
Sooner or later, Doofus will state in this thread that the "Founding Fathers" were "Liberals".

Regardless of what TH's resident Liberal Troll says, the Founding Fathers wren't "Liberals". The terms "Conservative" and "Liberal" weren't even in existence at that point in time.

Instead, you must look at the actions of both sides during the Revolutionary period and decide for yourself:

Crippling Taxes: The side of the King (and today's Liberals)

No political dissent: The side of the King (and today's Liberals)

No private ownership of firearms: The side of the King (and today's Liberals)

I am sure many of you can come up with more comparisons for this list.

Another payback

Why do I have to pay for this? When is he going to demand that I pay for abortions as well? That all hospitals must perform abortions.

Who is going to be watching? Sounds like another excuse to grow the government.

Don't under-estimate Doofus. He has an agenda and he is following it to the letter. His agenda includes the "belittling" of Conservative ideas and the pushing of Liberalism as "main stream America".

However, I do agree with you. Doofus and the Liberals are 180 degrees away from the truth. That is one of the points we as Conservatives must show to the moderates and right-leaning Democrats.

Anne 10:19am
Agree!!!!!!!

This is one of the points that Conservatives MUST show to moderates and right-leaning Democrats. The Constitution does NOT call for a vast, all powerful, federal government.

If we are going down the "road" to secession, we must make sure that the World, and our countrymen, understand why we are doing it.

good article
Thanks to Mr. Limbaugh, it goes without saying that the Obama administration feeds us only their twisted perspective on issues that they propose and carry out, and, of course the drive by media reports lapdoggingly! It is beyond me, that we,are now going with science, and that we were not into science until Obama came to our rescue! How twisted is that? It's not a science issue, its an "ethics" science issue! The truth must get out to the masses or we will stay in this ignorant, God-forsaken condition we're in for some time.

Amen, another thoughtful post, well said. I agree with Anne's thoughts on your last paragraph.
Obama has opened himself up to evil from the Father of Lies. He's been fast tracking every single abominable policy he can find and he's only been occupying the office for less than two months. "We must not care only about abortion we must care about the hungry which is just as important". He is a false brother. As if OBAMA was going to make sure the hungry were fed and McCain was not. Trying to bring the "life" issue down a notch in Christian thinking. Catholics for the Common Good (just a website backed with Soros money)commercials on every 15 minutes on Christian radio before the election. Now these Catholics and Evangelicals that were fooled and voted for the fraud have to live with the consequences and their consciences and the blood of babies on their hands.

And as you may have guessed "The Global Hunger " initiative never came to anything.

Hey, did you see the item this morning on this site about the Chinese harassing a Navy mapping ship in international waters?

I guess the Chinese have just sent a shot across Obama's bow regarding how much respect - and fear - they have of him as Commander-in-Chief. I'm sure their provocation won't go unnoticed by other governments around the world.

Anyone think the Chinese would have tried such a stunt if John McCain was in the Oval Office right now?

I just want to say that I cannot stand this "President" and cannot bring myself to refer to him by that name. Obama is a disgrace to this Country and to all who fought to preserve its freedoms. Impeach the jerk. He is totally inept.

No, I didn't. But you are correct. The "World" totally understands Obama. Their leaders understand that like Clinton, Obama is a "paper-tiger".

I expect more actions like this as the rest of the world "wakes up" to the Obama presidency.

Social Justice means Socialism

Capitalism by default, places humans in different 'Economic Classes' - self determination and 'Hard Work', simply produces more than indolence, 'Play Times' and the life of a professional beggar (welfare).

Social Justice (Socialism) wants 'Equal Outcomes' based on the theory that all humans would do well, if given the proper Social Justice.

Barack Obama and Liberals, 'Hate America', not only because America is rooted in the 'Rule of Law', but fits their theory that all 'Oppression' is caused by the powerful.

Not only is America the most powerful Nation in the world, but the rights Americans have, is predicated on the inalienable rights granted by the Creator - God.

Barack Obama and Liberals believe that not only is 'Man' the cause of all problems - 'Man' also can be the cure of all problems.

Some simple illustrations of that thinking, is 'Global Warming' and the 'War on Poverty'.

Barack Obama and Liberals think their Quest for Social Justice is so 'Noble and Pure' that it should NOT be questioned nor criticized.

Barack Obama's clarion call is that a true American Patriot should be willing to 'Sacrifice for the Common Good' - even if that means giving up your personally held values and property.

"Iran Test Fires New Long-Range Missile," from Fox News, March 8:

Iran has launched a new long-range missile, Reuters reported Sunday, days after the Islamic Republic's military chief warned Israel that Tehran's missiles are within range of its nuclear facilities.

"Iran test fires new long range missile," Press TV, Iran's English-language television station, said in a scrolling headline, Reuters reported.

The report comes days after Iran's military chief warned Israel that its nuclear facilities are within the range of Iranian missiles.

The warning from Revolutionary Guards commander Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari is the latest message from Tehran that it will strike back if attacked.

Israel and the United States suspect Iran's nuclear program is a cover for weapons production and say they would not accept a nuclear-armed Iran.

Tehran denies the accusation and says its nuclear activity is for generating power.

Iran's Shahab-3 missiles have a range of up to 1,250 miles, putting Israel within striking distance.
=====================

Nuclear Missiles with a 1250 mile range - will be used for generating power all right.

“At the “World Without Zionism” conference held in Tehran in October 2005, as the crowd chanted “death to Israel, death to America, death to England,” the Iranian President Ahminajead said...with the help of the Almighty, we shall soon experience a world without America and Zionism, notwithstanding those who doubt.”

Interesting
The thing about this ESC thing that I find interesting is how many people assume that if the government isn't funding it, it's not taking place. I'd love to hear at least one story about it that includes, high in the article, that embryonic stem cell research has been taking place, but has yet to produce a result worth boasting about. Perhaps there's a reason the private sector isn't (or didn't) throw a ton of money at it. When it's one's own money (not that taxes aren't one's own money, but we have no choice once the money is taken) you invest in things with the best track record and best chance of success. Apparently, those in the know don't see ESC research as a good bet.

Good morning!

Exactly! If embrionic stem cell research was so wonderful and important, why wasn't there a rise in private funding for it during the Bush administration? Why wasn't the left screeching about it for the seven years that federal funds were banned from it?

Well,as to embryonic research...
...it's like any other project funded by private money. If the private sector can't produce results then the government is, somehow, obligated to step in and fund the program forever. Results not withstanding.

Actually the last part isn't true, poor results only show the need for more government funding, this funding being inversly proportional to results, the worse the results the more government money is allocated to it.

California
has been funding embryonic stem cell research, that adds to our debt I might add, and received absolutely no returns for their troubles.

Now, when the government is in a self created fiscal crisis, Obummer is going to throw more good money after bad.

One doesn't need to get into the life issues to know a bad investment when they see one.

1. favoring complete obedience or subjection to authority as opposed to individual freedom: authoritarian principles; authoritarian attitudes.

2. of or pertaining to a governmental or political system, principle, or practice in which individual freedom is held as completely subordinate to the power or authority of the state, centered either in one person or a small group that is not constitutionally accountable to the people.

That is not the argument put forth for stem cell funding. The argument put forth is that if it were funded it would produce sure fire cures. Well stem cell has been funded, longer than adult stem cell, and has produced nothing.

What I consistently see in this country is tax payers funding all sorts of scientific research in procedures and pharmacology and yet we get overcharged for the results. We need to stop funding or make the money reimbursed. Most of it anyway is just a way of some 'scientist' of some sort, selling a con job to get job security. What you will never hear is how much money was thrown to research and nothing produced from it.

I would like to read about the percentage of successful experiments based on adult stem cell lines, relative to the percentage of failed research attempts utilizing embryonic stem cell lines. According to conservative news outlets I have listened to, the ONLY successful treatments developed so far have been derived from adult stem cell lines. But I would feel better knowing that this is a positive finding based on safety & efficacy-- as opposed to merely being an artifact of the limited levels of effort & research funding for research with embryonic lines due to the Bush funding policy.

Email response from DNC

Last week, I asked if you had a message you'd like to send Rush Limbaugh. The response was overwhelming. We received tens of thousands of submissions, and we picked the top five:

* "Americans didn't vote for a Rush to failure"

* "Hope and change cannot be Rush'd"

* "Failure is not an option for America's future"

* "We can fix America, just don't Rush it"

* "Rush: Say yes to America"

Now, we're putting it up for a vote. Decide which slogan Rush will see in his home town.

The slogan with the most votes will be put on a billboard where Rush can't miss it.

It's up to you to let Rush know that Americans reject his desire to see President Obama -- and our country -- fail.

Vote for your favorite slogan now:

but I have to disagree on this, "Anyone think the Chinese would have tried such a stunt if John McCain was in the Oval Office right now?"

Unfortunately, I don't think that McCain would do any better in regards the Chinese as he is only marginally better than the One. We were not presented with a decent choice in this election cycle unless you were hoping for McCain to win and become disabled enough that Sarah, the baracuda, Palin could take over. I believe that McCain, when broken by the Chinese/Russian/NV, was forever broken to be used. Not as the ultimate "Manchurian candidate", but still usefull in much less obvious ways.

I don't think we will last until 2013, perhaps the Mayans had it correct and the One will allow the destruction of the earth to start in time to end our civilization by 2012.

Actually, in the interest of accuracy, I'll give you Mod Mark's EXACT quote made in a post to Lolo1 last year:

Gee, and he's promising no evil Bible quotes. Wow, what a guy, huh?!

May I point out, a fundamental change occur in the market after oil bottomed ~6 years ago.

Oil companies signed long term supply contracts back then and got burned when oil prices bottomed out. Remember the good old days when we felt sorry for Exxon?

No more they said and switch to just buying the oil at the current market price. This lead to the rise of the oil traders who are now the middleman concerning oil. Exxon no longer deal directly with Saudi while buying oil.

Hence OPEC has lost much (not all) of its ability control prices.

Here is something to think about. High oil prices is scaring the cr*p out of Saudi's (see last week).

It cost them $6-8/barrel to produce. Why don't they just sell it for $50/barrel?

SnarkyMark's comment of the day.

To prove I am not gay, I have become a Muslim, praise Allah. I was unware that Jesus was gay (no kids, no wife, hung around 12 white guys).

Muhammad on the other hand had a wife, Khadijah, who was quite hot from my understanding. Muhammad was always in a good mood.

Civil??

You call that civil??

We can talk about stem cell research all you want. I think it's worth it but forcing the taxpayer to fund it is wrong, and IMHO, it's not the government's job to force us to pay for it.

And the drill example? Did Bell invent the telephone with government money? I can list hundreds of inventions and innovations created by the private sector. Just because the government gives them our money, it doesn't guarantee results, just a bigger bill for us.

There is NO VALUE, or even promise,

in embryonic stem cell research.

So far the ONLY SUCCESS, ie PROMISE, has been in adult cell research!

My view, man rejected the violent and hateful God in the old testament and set Christianity on a new moral direction. Hence it was man who created the myth of Jesus.

Liberals and counter-intuition (1)
Liberals correctly recognize a relationship between counter-intuition and intelligence. Some of the greatest scientific truths are counter-intuitive. The most obvious of these is that the earth revolves around the sun while spinning on its axis. Nothing in the observable day-to-day experience of human beings would suggest this reality. Intuition would tell you that the earth is flat and stationary, while all the objects in the heavens move across the firmament. Counter-intuition is the most impressive feat of the intellect. Liberals are constantly mimicking counter-intuition in order to impress one another with their genius, ala "The Emperor's New Clothes". Their insecurity is pathetic.

Embryonic stem cell research is a case in point. Only a superior intellect, i.e., a liberal, could arrive at the counter-intuitive conclusion that the balance of concern for life should favor those living with terrible diseases over mere embryos. Harvesting embryos repulses us mere mortals, but to our more sophisticated, "more equal" liberal brethren, such feats of counter-intuition are a sure sign of intellectual superiority - and anyone can play! You, too, can pass yourself off as "smart", regardless of your actual candlepower limitations.

Of course, even this inherently weak case could only be made in the absence of other, less dangerous, more promising alternatives, such as the recent technology that transforms adult skin cells into stem cells. But, liberals have been waiting years for their opportunity to make a statement ridiculing GWB's intellectual inferiority, and, by God, they will not be denied!

Liberals and counter-intuition (2)
This infantile, empty gesture will result in the confiscation of wealth from folks who find the harvesting of human embryos to be equivalent to murder, to pay for that sin, even as that obsolete method has been left in the dust by science. Well, that's what they get for not being liberals! So there!!!

This was never about science. It was always about insecure liberals' need to feel superior.

Believe it or not a kid did actually ask my daughter that, and since it is so in line with ModMark, I couldn't help but wonder about the DNA involved. the question was so stupid my daughter was laughing out loud and even the liberal teacher told the kid to shut up...literally! When my daughter realized he was serious, she felt sorry for him, and did go on to answer him, once she quit laughing. What is pathetic is the question and discussion took place in a AP English class. I can only imagine the size of the cross SHE is having to take up daily by being married to him.

Rich Not Wealthy:

You may well be right that McCain may not react to the Chinese provocation any differently than Obama will, or that the Chinese would have refrained from such an action in the first place, if McCain were in the Oval Office right now instead of Obama.

But I would MUCH rather have taken my chances with McCain in the Oval Office in such a situation as this one than Obama 8 days out of 7. One of the biggest reasons I voted for McCain in November was because I had no trouble picturing him as a genuine Commander-in-Chief, unlike Obama. And if McCain were in the White House right now instead of Obama, I think we can ALL agree that HE would not be sucking up to the Muslim community around the globe as Obama has done - and he DARN SURE would never have signed that executive order allowing residents of the Gaza Strip to be able to come to the United States, with U.S. taxpayers footing the bill for their relocation, nor even PROPOSED meeting with ANYONE in the Taliban. And that he would be on Israel's side in the current Mid-East geopolitical crucible instead of its enemies.
