Shifting The Iraq Debate

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I am constantly amazed that in the ongoing debate over the Iraq War the central question that ought to drive our decision is seldom considered. We focus on the difficulties in staying the course and achieving the mission, but rarely discuss the consequences of abandoning it. This is sheer insanity.

Following General David Petraeus' congressional testimony and based on his recommendations, President Bush outlined his plan to reduce troop levels in Iraq to their pre-surge levels by next summer. Quite predictably, Democrats immediately proclaimed their opposition to the plan.

In the face of this impressive report and General Petraeus' stellar reputation for competence and good character, I can think of only a few reasons Democrats would remain in obstruction mode.

Sadly, Democrats have boxed themselves into a defeat scenario, having placed every single one of their eggs in that basket since before the 2006 elections.

If they suddenly begin supporting the war effort they'll be wiping those eggs on their faces and admitting the error and unfairness of their ongoing criticisms of President Bush. They will also be placing themselves in other boxes: the dog houses of MoveOn.org, Daily Kos and other rabid antiwar groups pulling their puppet strings of failure.

Their suggestion that General Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker are dishonest mouthpieces for the administration is nothing more than a case of psychological projection of their own predicament.

It was hard not to be persuaded by the sober, balanced testimony of these two gentlemen -- so much so that even wobbly, reluctant Republican Senators have returned to supporting the mission. But Democrats, led by Senator Harry Reid and the slew of Democratic presidential candidates, remain wholly intransigent in their opposition.

The surge has yielded significant military successes, beyond our rosiest expectations. The Democrats' goal post-shifting response is that despite any military gains, we are making no progress politically.

But many believe the government is making progress, though not nearly as much as would occur absent the underlying climate of violence. Military progress is an essential predicate to political progress, and we are establishing that predicate. In addition, as General Petraeus noted, it's not an insignificant "political" development that local tribes have begun to turn against Al Qaeda in support of our troops and the new government.

Establishing a new republican government would take significant time even if the process weren't impeded by war. Just think of the staggering arrogance of Democratic lawmakers in castigating the Iraqi parliament for failing to achieve consensus in a fraction of the time it took the new American government to become stabilized. This is even more apparent considering their own unwillingness to support their commander in chief during war. Continued...

Liberals lack guts to fight
LIBERALS AND WAR SUCCESS:

IT’S SORT OF LIKE TRYING TO SQUEEZE TOOTHPASTE BACK INTO THE TUBE—IT NEVER WORKS

BY LISA RICHARDS

I love how Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton want to know the exact date of the pull-out in Iraq. I think Hillary should refrain from using phrases like pull-out, especially with a husband who’s an expert on the subject. And Barack Obama who has about as much experience in anything governmental as Paris Hilton on a three-day drunk trying tell Americans how not to drink and drive, asked questions so absurd he actually made Ted Kennedy appear sober; if that’s possible.

If the questions had been directed at the fired-by Bill Clinton General Wesley Clarke, you can be sure Harry Reid would have been fawning with drool over the bad-tempered liberal who screwed up a Clinton war so bad even Clinton had to ignore the blue-dress whore under the desk to take time out to issue a pink slip to the General the Clinton’s would later go on to endorse as a presidential candidate.

Petreaus is under direct order from Bush and not a liberal democrat, and the past three days of grand-standing do-nothing-but-whine was proof liberals can’t stand any bit of success Bush is having in Iraq. Liberals want Iraq to fail. They want Muslim terrorists to slaughter our troops like pigs. The want Sheryl Crowe sitting atop an enemy tank posing for photos ala’ Jane Fonda. Hell, if they can get Fonda to do a retake of her Hanoi hoopla, liberals would be in propaganda heaven...

Success in Iraq means
a dem. in the center of the Middle East. It will prevent Iran from establishing its nuclear imperialism. It will protect Israel as a fellow democracy and protect the "moderate" Arab states of Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia from the worst depredations of exported terrorism.

There is no downside from success. Failure will make the withdrawal from Vietnam look like a picnic. The Iraqi nation could split into its three regions, weakening any ec. or military force it might have, opening more than one avenue for terrorist takeovers, putting the oil industry at great risk if not disintegration, allowing revenge against our former allies (in Vietnam 2 1/2 mill. went to "re-education" (death) camps and Cambodia killed 2 million--the killing fields), AND, as McCain says, the terrorists simply following us home as we leave.

The fall of Saigon precipitated by c. a year the Carter years of high inflation, high interest rates, high unemployment, and military humiliation. Any one who champions those outcomes needs a lobotomy.
