The Democrats' Entrenched and Immovable Antiwar Posture

Will Sarah Palin make a run at the GOP Nomination in 2012?

The Democrats' long-entrenched position, partisan interests and ideological inclinations militate against them changing their mind on Iraq, regardless of the facts on the ground.

First, please consider honestly what the Democrats' reaction will be if in September, Gen. David Petraeus reports that our troop surge in Iraq is yielding unambiguously successful results against the enemy and in training Iraqi security forces?

Do you believe there is any realistic possibility Democrats will rejoice at the news, applaud the efforts of our troops and retreat from their demands that we begin immediate troop withdrawal? (Their reaction to the surge's success so far give us some clues, does it not?)

If I am correct that they will not -- and I would be most happy to be wrong -- why do you think that is?

One major reason, of course, is that they cannot stand President Bush nor bear the prospect of history vindicating his stubborn determination. They have staked the last four years on discrediting him on Iraq and know that history cannot vindicate him without repudiating them.

Their repudiation would decrease their chances of electoral victory in 2008. Can you imagine all the capital they will have wasted on their efforts to destroy President Bush and undermine our mission in Iraq?

They shouldn't have the economy as an issue, including the deficit, since Bush's tax cuts are leading to fulfillment of his promise to cut the deficit in half. They'll still trot out class and race warfare and push national health care. But a consistently strong economy, apparent success in Iraq and an earned reputation for softness on national defense and security during time of war will be formidable hurdles.

But I submit that their unremitting hostility toward Bush and their partisan interests are not the only reasons for their intractable opposition to the war in Iraq. The Democrats want us out of Iraq, not necessarily because they don't think we can win, but perhaps because they fear we can, because they don't believe our cause there is just.

Not that I need further proof for these suppositions beyond my observations, but I received an e-mail recently from an articulate, passionate liberal saying he had no desire to wave the American flag because of his contempt for our policies in Iraq, which has resulted in the unnecessary and unjust waste of lives and resources. The e-mailer's sentiments were nothing exceptional, but fairly typical of the antiwar position. Continued...

The anti war posters refuse to see anyones point of view but there own.

In there view everything starts and ends with America's interference in other nations business.

I remember seeing a movie when I was a kid about an alien robot that would zap anybody that showed acts of agression.

These anti war people are depending on one of those things when Ron Paul wins the White House.

He's going to bring our troops home, turn his robot loose.

What Could Happen if We Fail
There is little discussion in the media about what may happen if we fail in Iraq. First, don't be swayed that this is just an internal Civil War. Al Queda has no made Iraq the center on the war on terror because we are there.

Moreover, the ethnic strife has a great potential to cause a larger war. The Iranians and Syrians are Shi'a and that is why they are backing the Iraqi Shi's. The Suadi's are Sunni and the potential is there that Saudi Arabia could end up becoming involved in an unstable Iraq which would get them involved with Iran and Syria. This is a World War I scenario waiting in the wings where a little ethnic strife could spread into a huge conflict.

Secondly, what about the Kurds in the north? The Kurds are next to their enemies the Turks. Remember the Turks, these are the people who engaged in the successful genocide of the Armenians. The Turks could end up drawn in to an unstable Iraq if they feel threatened by the Kurds in the north.

Now, if a larger conflict occurs in the Middle East because we left Iraq unstable, what happens to the economy of the nations around the globe that depend on oil? An unstable Middle East could rock the global economy and the markets will surely fall into a global depression especially in this intertwined economy.

Third, where does all the oil money go if we leave. That is a huge amount of money that if it falls into the wrong hands could support terror operations against the US.

Fourth, what about the possibility of ethnic cleansing after we leave. More than a million Vietnamese were killed by the communists after we left including people who worked with our soldiers. The same thing will surely happen in an unstable Iraq. Will the democrats take any responsibility for the bloodbath that will follow? Probably not....
