What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

You've got to hand it to Democrats. They are bountiful in chutzpah and relentless in trying to expand their tent. With the second-class treatment they routinely mete out to Christian political activists you'd think they'd be more discreet about proselytizing Christians on the virtues of liberalism. Think again.

Never mind that Democratic leaders become apoplectic every time Republicans so much as whisper about Christianity in the public square; their presidential candidates came right out in the open Monday night and attended Sojourners' Forum on Faith.

Mainstream media reporters couldn't hide their incredulity as they detailed the religious statements of candidates from Hillary Clinton to John Edwards, who just couldn't brag enough about the importance of prayer and faith in their lives. A Washington Post article covering the forum was titled "The Democrats' Leap of Faith."

You've got to admire the Democrats' tenacity. No matter how consummately the Republican Party is destroying itself, Democrats refuse to concede any voter bloc.

Of course, this is nothing new. Jim Wallis, founder and organizer of Sojourners, has been trumpeting the compatibility of evangelical Christianity with political liberalism for a number of years, most prominently in his book "God's Politics," and exhorting Democrats to pursue evangelicals with an evangelical fervor.

Wallis isn't the only one on the left with such ideas. Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne has written passionately about the family-values friendliness of liberal domestic programs, particularly concerning Senator Ted Kennedy's family leave advocacy.

Dionne wrote, "If you are for family values, how can you oppose Kennedy's call to give all employees at least seven days of paid sick leave a year so they don't face 'a cruel choice between losing their job, or neglecting their sick child or sick spouse at home.'"

No matter which leftist is making the point, the theme is generally the same: Republicans don't have a monopoly on family values or even Christian values. In fact, Democratic liberal values, they say, more closely reflect the true Christian spirit.

DNC chairman Howard Dean once asked indignantly, "How can Republicans get to talk about moral values when they don't have any? I don't want to hear any lectures about Christian values from the Republican Party. They are the Pharisees and the Sadducees."

Former DNC chairman Ed Rendell said, "You have to look awfully hard" to find anything about abortion or gay marriage in the Bible. But in every chapter of the Bible, and the Koran, and the Torah, he said, are references to the Golden Rule, which squares more with political liberalism than conservatism. Continued...

Thanks, Cam
I appreciate your response, and I agree that we will have to disagree on this one. I think that we just don't see eye to eye on when an embryo becomes a human being, and I can accept that reason better than any of your others.

Truthfully, none of us know when the soul and body meet, I would rather err on the side of caution on that one. And, to be honest, I was doubtful myself about the humanity of the embryo at one point. But then I acknowledged that killing it would be killing innocent human life no matter how you looked at it. And the pictures of aborted embryos, even at early stages, really impacted me. I appreciate your willingness to consider the issue. I think most people haven't really thought through where they stand on this one.

As far as Republican moral errors go, I agree with you that the Republican party is certainly not the beacon of morality that some make it out to be. I am happy to see Democrats taking on the abortion issue and trying to do something about it. If I had to choose between a pro-choice Republican or a pro-life Democrat, I would probably vote for the Democrat. Faced with two pro-choice candidates, I will write someone in. As I have told many Republicans who accuse me of being a single issue voter, I'm not a single issue voter, I am a bottom line issue voter, and my bottom line is abortion. I just can't vote for someone who supports it.

Anyway, thanks for the dialouge, I appreciate you helping me to understand your position of being both pro-choice and Christian.

Excellent response
Thank you for your very thoughtful response. You take a much more thoughtful approach than at least your partisans on this website.

We may have to agree to disagree on whether it’s OK to prefer not to be born with a birth defect or to an impoverished family. If others made a different decision, I’d be delighted to support them financially. I guess I’m operating under the assumption that if my embryo were terminated at a few weeks, God would find another one for me.

Time magazine had an interesting article several months ago about a married couple who had a mild form of Down syndrome and were supported by their families. When the woman was informed that it was very likely that any child of theirs would also likely have Down syndrome, she chose to get sterilized. Was her decision “insulting” or just better informed than anyone else?

As for my main point of the Republicans being in no position to criticize Democrats from a scriptural basis, I’m still 100% certain of that. It was the Republicans who reduced the tobacco company penalties from $130 billion to $10 billion despite the fact that they were targeting teenagers and manipulating nicotine levels. About 1,000 people die every day prematurely from smoking. It was the Bush Administration that gutted New Source Review regulations, saving power plants billions of dollars in required upgrades. It was the Reagan/Bush National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations that ignored SUV rollovers for years at a cost of 12,000 lives. They justified their inaction based on the public’s “right” to choose vehicles. On the other hand, Bush II appointed former representatives of the pharmaceutical industry to run the FDA. In five years, FDA’s warnings on misleading drug ads were cut in half while the reports of violations stayed the same. FDA also adopted the pharmaceutical companies’ assertion that imported drugs were “unsafe.” That assertion was “discovered” in a focus group formed to determine what would turn Americans off to imported drugs. Now the public had no “right” to choose. In both the SUV and drug issues, Republicans ignored the science in favor of the big bucks. After midnight in 2003 the Republicans gave away billions to the drug industry by forbidding Medicare from negotiating with them. The key sponsors in congress walked away with huge salaries in the industry. The money lost through forbidding negotiations could have been used to provide more services to 47 million uninsured Americans. An estimated 18,000 Americans die each year for lack of health care. During the Iraq/Iran war, the Reagan/Bush Administrations sold anti-aircraft equipment to the Iranians while advising the Iraqis to step up their aerial bombing. Now we’re in the midst of a war that was planned from day 1 of the Bush Administration and substantiated by a series of demonstrably inaccurate statements.

So I’ll take you at your word on all of your facts and figures. As I said, I’d like to see my party do more on abortion. Some in congress are doing so. I’d love to see someone take on the Spring Break phenomenon in our country. But if I have to choose between a party that’s callous with embryos and a party that’s callous with walking, talking, innocent, and genetically distinct people, I’m afraid I’m going to have to go with the former rather than the latter.
