Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In this self-congratulatory age of multiculturalism and hyper-tolerance, what religion other than Christianity is treated as inherently offensive? In fact, haven't our cultural high priests instructed that we dare not find other religions offensive, but must even enthusiastically embrace them for contributing to our diversity of ideas and values?

Of course they have, but that admonition -- as all but the most inattentive recognize -- doesn't apply to Christianity, as this year's annual war on Christmas demonstrates once again.

The city of Chicago asked organizers of the German Christkindlmarket, a downtown Christmas festival, to reject New Line Cinema as a sponsor because its advertisements for the movie "The Nativity Story" might offend non-Christians.

Isn't that line getting a little old, especially in a nation where some 90 percent of the people supposedly identify themselves as Christians? It's always easy to say people might be offended, because some people are always in a desperate hurry to be offended.

But what is more likely is that activist organizations like the ACLU, various atheist groups and other radical secularists want to create the impression that Christianity is offensive in order to diminish its influence and its presence in the public square.

But since we're talking about offensiveness, how about the sensibilities of Christians? Isn't it far more reasonable for Christians to be offended at the banishment of their displays from the public square than for non-Christians to be offended at their presence?

Yet this obsession with scrubbing away Christianity from public places suggests there is something offensive about Christianity. I wish just once some of these anti-Christian charlatans would be asked to specify precisely which of Christ's teachings they find offensive -- other than perhaps his unequivocal pronouncement of absolute moral standards.

Secular leftists usually tell us that their primary interest in these matters is to ensure that our society and our laws guarantee religious freedom for all. But this nativity flap is one of many that reveal their true mindset, which is hardly as pluralistic and tolerant as they would have us believe.

If religious freedom were their driving motivation, they would be on the side of the German Christlkindmarket, and its unfettered right to choose its own sponsors. Shouldn't those who boast of their commitment to religious liberty fight for the right of entrepreneurs to promote Christian-based movies or themes?

But these secular objectors aren't committed to religious liberty across the aboard as they claim, because their tolerance and pluralism don't extend to Christianity, for which they have an obvious hostility. Continued...

We don't hate when people have strong beliefs or principles. We hate when people refuse to admit when they've been PROVEN wrong. For instance, natural selection. Over the last 160 years, every piece of evidence collected supports Darwin's theory. Overwhelming scientific evidence versus a book of stories with no physical proof to support any of it. I choose SCIENCE over folklore. It doesn't disprove the existence of God to believe in natural selection, it only means you have to admit that parts of your book may have been inaccurate. It's like global warming. Conservatives choose to side with Sean Hannity over the 900+ peer-reviewed journal articles. There's a point where faith becomes stupidity. It's right about when all proof points elsewhere and someone still chooses to believe in what's obviously incorrect.

If I make a poor judegement behind the wheel of my car and it results in someone's death, I could be charged with involuntary manslaughter. If the president makes a poor judgement call and it results in the death of 3000 soldiers, he gets a pass because he 'stuck to his beliefs'. Very nice.

MJD,
Somehow you read my post as blaming Christians for the persecutions I mentioned. I don't understand how you saw that, but it seems typical for someone who uses the bible to prove everything to have to make up their own meaning in what they read so it fits their argument.
As for being the comment of being the subject of ridicule for being Catholic, I was raised Catholic myself and I know what you mean. I know how terrible it is when you're denied a job because you're Catholic. Or when security guards follow you around a store for being Catholic. Constantly getting pulled over on the highways for being Catholic and it's impossible to get a cab in the city! I hate it when people call me a "Dirty Money-hating Cath" or burn a star of david on my lawn or when I get pulled out of line at the hospital because they think I'm an abortion-clinic bomber.
I'll tell you what, since you're still Catholic and I'm not, if you ever need to hide in my attic for 2 years so you're not murdered by the ACLU, I will gladly help you out.

Peppermint,
Read and comprehend, please. I actually mentioned that you have the right to practice your religion as you see fit. No one's coming to your house and taking away your tree. No one's shutting down your church. All we are saying is that there shouldn't be religious sympbols on government property or prayer in public schools. That's all. The ACLU is not trying to stop you from being a Christian, they're trying to stop the Government from being any one religion. And if a store like Target wants to say Happy Holidays so as not to alienate a portion of its customers with one specific greeting, guess what... IT'S BUSINESS, not an attack on Christians.

Wake up, people. Christians still have a pretty decent handle on things in America. Ever been a non-christian president? How many members of congress are Christians?

comments
The comments following mine actually unfortunately generally serve to confirm my points better than I was able-- many of them show the continued tunnel vision, myopia, narrow mindedness and insularity of some right-wing Christian zealots. The repeated complaints about Christianity or Christians being maltreated or somehow suppressed because many don't want only their religion advocated by our government, reveals the continued lack of understanding of what concerns the large number of Americans of all relgions when they see public funds, spaces, or educational institutions openly advocating any religion. No one has suggested for a moment any objection to Christians practicing their own religion on their own time, in their own homes, etc.
The continued loud and repetitive wailing about this fundamental American concept in these comments confirms my worst fears: that right-wing evangelical types don't really believe in equal validity for all beliefs, but rather feel very strongly that their religion hsould somehow be allowed to be dominant and most prominent in our society, because they believe it's the only right way.

"Don't asssume" has it generally right (except his fact about numbers: actually Islam has the most followers of any religion world-wide, but I know they're all hopelessly misguided and destined for hell, since they don't all believe what (some) real Americans do!

And to label the many patriotic and clear-thinking Americans (including the ACLU patriots)
with some vague negative label like "secularists", or even worse "liberals" just avoids examining the issues. Are we to believe that all who don't embrace one religion that you happen to follow are "secularists"-- those who advocate this are doing an excellent job of showing the point about your own parochiality!

and for those who seem to believe Christianity has been just perfect in its track records, I guess they never heard of the Crusades, the Inquisition, and oh yes, how about the German holocaust? To say that the perpetrators of these brutalities weren't "good" Christians is no different from claiming that those Muslims who carried out 9/11 and other terrorist acts just aren't "good Moslems", but that really Islam is a gentle and peace-loving religion!

and all this is sealed by the lovely religious sermonizing in some of the messages-- spare me your beliefs, please, so that I can decide for myself-- that's what the true American patriot feels, and the point that some of the contributors of the writers are completely missing!
