Christian conservatives should feast, not fast, on politics

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Democrats, with the unsolicited aid of some Republicans, have put on a full court press for "values voters" in their bid to regain control of Congress.

Through various tactics, like tarring the entire GOP with the Foley scandal, and capitalizing on defections by some Christians from the GOP, they hope to suppress the Christian conservative voter turnout. At the same time, they are courting the votes of those they can't discourage enough to stay home.

Democrats have been agonizing since Election Day 2004 over how to repackage their message to deceive values voters into believing they truly represent their interests. Never mind their promotion of same-sex marriage, abortion on demand and partial birth abortion. Never mind their ridiculing of Christian conservatives, their comparisons of Christian "fundamentalists" to Islamic fundamentalists or their institutional sneering at Boy Scouts.

Then, serendipitously, as if by divine intervention, Foley fell into their laps. Next, with the pre-election timing that conspiracy theorists couldn't possibly countenance as coincidence, a number of Republican "insiders" released books recommending a downscaling of influence by Christian conservatives on the Republican Party.

Former Sen. John Danforth's book laments the Christian right's apparent hold on the GOP. Former White House Faith-Based Initiative Deputy Director David Kuo charges that while President Bush is sincere about his faith, "he is a politician and is ultimately no different from any other politician, content to use religion for electoral gain more than for good works."

With friends like these on the right, it's no wonder Democrats are feeling so cocky about their November election prospects. While I believe Danforth is a good and honorable man, I couldn't disagree with him more -- assuming I understand his position correctly -- about the involvement of Christian conservatives in politics and, in particular, the Republican Party. They have as much right -- indeed an obligation -- to influence policy consistent with their worldview as any other group. If not Christian conservatives, who will stand up for the unborn? Who will stand up for traditional marriage? Who will better stand up for originalist judges and religious liberty?

Conservative Christians, I might add, didn't start this fight. They didn't issue the unconstitutional federal judicial edict severely restricting state regulation of abortions. They didn't try to change the thousands-year-old institution of traditional marriage. They aren't leading the assault on religious freedoms.

Secular forces are not planning on withdrawing from politics. They don't believe in leaving their worldview out of their policy advocacy, their governance or their law making. How can responsible Christians even consider unilateral surrender? And why are they always asked to make the false choice between their politics and their evangelism? They can and should do both, with vigor.

David Kuo, despite his suspicious timing, appears to proceed from genuine motives, but his concerns and solutions are woefully misguided. He seems most upset that Bush didn't secure the promised funding for his faith-based program and thereby betrayed Christian conservatives, who he took for granted.

Kuo laments the political naivete of certain Christian leaders for putting too much faith in political leaders. He believes they have been duped by the administration and intoxicated through their proximity to presidential power from holding the president accountable for failing to deliver.

But it is Kuo who is politically naive for believing that government handouts should be Christian conservatives' most urgent concern. President Bush might have failed to secure the funding he'd earmarked for faith-based programs, but he has most certainly delivered for Christian conservatives on policy -- and that's what is most important.

Kuo's naivete is further displayed by his reckless recommendation that Christians tell Republicans "we are fasting from politics for a season." To the contrary, it would make more sense for Christian conservatives to become political gluttons for this electoral season. If not, they will be directly participating in the acceleration of the decline of their culture, a cultural climate less hospitable to their evangelical duties and a less secure America, for starters.

In the meantime, Democrats are enjoying their popcorn as they watch the spectacle of these intramural GOP squabbles, hoping to laugh all the way to the polls secure in their knowledge of a depressed values voter turnout.

But, as usual, they can't leave well enough alone, as they are once again playing semantic games to convince values voters they are on their team. Their latest "values friendly" platitude designed to make this case, recently articulated by Bill Clinton, is: Democrats are striving for the "common good." I hope they just keep on insulting our intelligence. If nothing else will motivate Christian voters to go to the polls, maybe that will.

Egos
It would seem those, who have books to sell, will do just about anything to do so, including “eating their own.” Jack Danforth+ is on some Via Media crusade and David Kuo seems to be on some sort of purity trip. Both are egos on parade and should be ignored.

The Missing Governor
Mitt Romney and a gay lawyer created gay marriage, long with Judge Margert Marshall and her three coherts. Go to Hadley Arkes, the missing governor. The faces of the natrual human family are forever being denied and the right to protect the children are being lost, to lead them down the path that decends into H*ll. Morals, values, self-discipline, principals and the natrual value of the human family, the state of marriage is reduced to PartyA and PartyB. The state of parenthood, father and mother, is reduced to Parent A and Parent B. The Union between and man and woman, the coming together as one, is reduced to the coming together of many. Parental defination is anybody's guess. God is abandoned and replace for sexual gratification and evil. Our marriage and our way of life is forever gone, in the eyes of the law of Massachusetts??? What has become of the natural human family? A Mother A Father, A Child, A God that grants these gifts to His Children. Call Governor Romney and ask for the answers to these questions at 617-725-4005.

Go To massresistance.com
Go to massresistance.com and missionamerica.com and get all the information on what is happening to our marriage our children, our schools and what is plaguing our country. This insanity is threating our very exsistance.

Limbaugh's correct.
Every time conservative Christians walk away from politics, or even engage in boycotts like the one against Disney by the Southern Baptists, they lose.

You can't complain about the outcome of elections if you don't participate, any more than you can complain about an entertainment company's content if you don't attempt to buy it instead of boycotting it.

There's nothing the libs secularists would love more than to see conservative Christians pull their tents and walk away from the struggle.

play

Like the punch line to an old joke (paraphrased)

"You no play the game, you no make the rules."

If we want any say in the "rules", then we have to play the "game">

VOTE!

gay marriage
has been critisized by Romney. Unfortunately, he is in a state dominated by democrats.Don't blame him.

When The World Becomes WarTorn
When the world becomes worntorn and military might fill the air with toxic gases. When mother nature cast her fury and there are no homes left. When there is no agencies nor government to blame. Who will help??? God is my government, He will heal and save my soul... he will give me eternal life... Think and act now... tommorrow may not come, for some. Amen!!! God Bless!!!!

Retaing Rights
Vote! Otherwise you don't have bitching rights if your guy loses.

David Kuo
It is a shame that David Kuo does not understand that when we believers approach the political arena and, in particular, certain politicians it is with the hope (though not the expectation), but the hope, that we can successfully persuade a few, if not more, of those politicians to cast a vote that might count toward doing such things as protecting the unborn; putting an end to public policies that promulgate out-of-wedlock births and the wretched lifestyle that that imposes on innocent children; fighting poverty and hunger without stripping folks of the dignity of employment and self help...if we manage to do that then we believers have accomplished quite a bit. Where David has gotten confused is in wanting or expecting non-believing politicians to LIKE him.
Who CARES if Karl Rove rolls his eyes when a zealous, evangelical lobbyist walks away?
Who CARES if those people in Washington don't LIKE us?
Who cares if they think we're weird?
Why care at all?
All we should care about is if they, in fact, get in there and vote the way we ask them to vote.
We Christians are not of this world, right?
We are citizens of another world.
This world will NEVER "get us"!
We need to get over that and just keep on fighting the good fight.
We do not NEED the world to like or approve of us.
That is the example that Jesus set. He set about the Father's business and did not worry about whether or not He was appreciated or liked or admired or "popular".
He just did what He was called to do and that is our example.
Don't worry if "those people" ridicule us or if they like us or dislike us or approve of us or disapprove of us.
Just get their support and call it a victory!

David Limbaugh is right
HYDRANGEA and David Limbaugh are correct...don't withdraw from the fight, because that assures a Democrat/Socialist win.

We Christians need to compel our congressmen and senators to vote our way on issues that matter to us. Our country (even Republicans)is drifting leftward, and we need to be involved and engaged, to stop it, and advance our traditional American values.

"The common good" which Bubba talks about and "It takes a Village", which is Hillary's idea -- are right out of the Socialist playbook. Take a look at the mess of Western Europe, and know that the USA doesn't want to drift that way. VOTE!! GET INVOLVED FOR THE USA, FOR YOUR CHILDREN, AND FOR THE TROOPS!!

Getting desperate?
Sounds like David is getting desperate. More to the point, big business is getting desperate. So they are trying to get the "values voters" to show up so they can maintain power. And why do they want that power? So they can continue to rape and pillage the working class, shipping our jobs over seas to be done by slave labor.

Consider this: if they are trying to get the "values voters" on their side, what does that say about their "values"? They are the "economic voters", which tells me they don't care about values, only about economics. Sure, they'll USE "values voters" to get into power, but from there, it's all about economics.

Sorry David. The GOP should have defended our borders instead of pandering to businesses that would rather put Americans out of work so they can drive down our wages and make more profit.

There's Something Funny about David Kuo
I heard him interviewed on All Things Considered. As an evangelical, I expect a few basic things to be in place. One is that they'd refer to God as "He," and yet I swear I heard David Kuo refer to God as "it."

He also spoke the Democrats' talking points, yet claims to be speaking to conservative people.

I'm aware that there are evangelicals who don't agree with the Bush administration, but as yet they don't step out into the light very often.

Of course, it is a free country and people can formulate their political ideas however they feel the need to. So maybe this weird coloration of David Kuo's words is not a big deal, but maybe it is.

Dim Kim,
Dim Kim, let the light in. We don't hold the governments veiw of marriage. We hold fast to the word, The living Word of God. I know that's a big task for the secular mind to comprehend. But like it or not gays are not and never can be considered suitable parents under the goverment of God. Lord knows many hetrosexuals fit in that description. But lets, bring light into the picture. The light of our Lord Jesus Christ is the light of life. Amen!!!!! Praise Jesus!!!!!

Christian Tools for Big Business
Christians are realizing that they are only political tools, a source of votes, for the Big Business wing of the Republican Party and nothing more. Christians provide the votes and Big Business gets the policies- capital gains tax cuts, outsourcing, downsizing, mindless "free" trade, large-scale immigration. All but the capital gains tax cuts demonstrably hurts social and religious conservatives directly. And what have social conservatives got in return? Fine Supreme Court picks, a child tax credit, a few symbolic bones and little else. The GOP won't even honestly deal with the absurdity of homosexual "marriage".

The primary issue for social conservatives today, however, is the swamping of the nation with Third World immigrants. As more come in, social conservatives will be marginalized. Worse, our historic nation will be fractured beyond recognition. Big business strongly supports the current immigration staus quo due to tehir own repellant selfishness. It is readily apparent that policies should be enacted that attack big business, not only for the sake of punishment for a spoiled child, but so that they have no reason or ability to hire Third World immigrants. Yes, economic growth should be sacrificed so that the historic American nation can be restored to whatever extent possible- Big Business be d*mned.

In the end, Big Business will most likely get its way in the Republican Party and social conservatives will get the bones. More and more, social conservatives will realize this and slowly become disinterested in government and more interested in their own families and communities. Like the early Christians in Roman days, they will turn their backs on a degenerate society and concentrate on their own betterment. One manifestation of this is the homeschooling movement.

Lastly, the more intelligent Christians realize Pres. George W. Bush is a phony Christian. His staff has homosexuals and fornicators, the most prominent fornicator among them being the Chief-of-Staff himself, Joshua Bolton. Bush has appointed homosexual ambassadors and certainly has homosexuals in sub-cabinet positions. One of Bush's top political functionaries is a homosexual not yet outed due to his being more important to homosexuals being on the inside than on the outside. Interestingly, Laura Bush and Secretary of State Rice both attended a recent swearing in of an AIDS ambassador who had his male "bride" by his side, a blatant show of support for homosexuality by the White House. Adding to that are the antics of homosexual Republican congressmen Jim Kolbe and Mark Foley along with the exposure of the fact that the Republican Congressional staffs are brimming with homosexuals. Social conservatives are learning that the Republican Party is part of the cultural decadence eating out the innards of the country's soul.

Blind faith...
Conservatives realize that voting for a Democrat is like voting for Stalin/Hiter.

However, not doing one's homework on a Republican candidate (checking voting records, etc) can result in the election of RINOs such as Foley who has again proved the point that regardless of what is used for a cover, homosexuals can't be trusted with children.

What is David talking about?
What exactly has this administration "delivered" for values voters? Are we close to having abortion on demand made illegal? Is there a constitutional ammendment to ban gay marriage? What specifically has this administration done?

Note to Democrat leadership:

We don’t expect our politicians to be sinless, but we do expect them to be Americans rather than socialists. We expect them to show some remorse when their wrongdoing is exposed, not to glory in their shame. We expect them to put interests of country above that of political party. We expect them to be more truthful and less full of hypocrisy. We expect them to be able to identify the enemy of freedom, and to engage the enemy rather than the President.

We know these things are difficult for you, because we now recognize that you have identified yourself to be the enemy of freedom, rather than the friend of liberty. We will do everything within our power under law to see you removed from office. Freedom loving Americans will never vote for you with your current leadership and policies. You and your lapdog media are failing because the new media is exposing your fraud. You filter your agenda driven news all you want. We gave up listening to you a long time ago.

Thank God for the new media.

Please Consider
All of you whom are beholding to the secular way of thought, please consider, ask God for direction, Call on the name of Jesus, even if it is just a test for you. See if He shows any sign of being real, because He is. Jesus rewards those who call on Him. He gives comfort in mind and body and soul. Please, I request of you in His Holy Name. Don't shut yourself out, because He loves you and so do I. Amen!!!!! Praise Jesus!!!!

There is A Kingdom
There is a kingdom, greater than this. There is a Kingdom of God. It is in the heart and soul of man. It is a kingdom of great love, where no-one is evil, no hurt one's, no lonely one's.
There is a Kingdom that lights the spirit,so open yourself up to it, for that Kingdom is Almighty God, and His love which is your refuge and your salvation. Amen!!!! Praise Jesus.

Christian Right
The jury is still out on Dubya. It appears he has selected two promising SCOTUS members but we don't know yet how they will rule on the unconstitutional Roe v Wade. Reagan screwed us on abortion and so did Bush 1.

I hope Republicans take abortion seriously. If we don't get an honest, law abiding Supreme court, we will punish those in power by not voting for them.

The Christian mind set is that God will take care of us regardless of who is in power. Its the pagans who will suffer the most under destructive, perverted, liberal leadership.

The future of our countries economic prosperity is threatened by 12 million invaders putting socialist Democrats in office for the next 50 years. They will turn our nation into Canada or worse.

SCOTUS?
RA Wrote:

If you think Bush gives a darn about Roe v Wade, you're crazy. The proof of that is Harriet Myers.

The Republicans will keep making excuses for not delivering until either they have the power they want (at which time they will throw the "values voters" overboard), or they are thrown out of office. But to deliver would mean to give up their carrot. Kinda like Jesse Jackson actually solving race relations.

Now what Bush IS interested in are judges that will give him the leeway he wants to hold AMERICAN CITIZENS as enemy combatants, in violation of their Constitutional rights, and shutting down the trial lawyers so we have no more recourse against the gov't or big businesses.

"Values voters" are nothing more than usefull idiots to the current Republican Party. Sorry, but that is the cold, hard fact.

ugh again
I have to stop reading this trash.

Pull your collective head out of the foul and disturbing place you have put it!

Your fundamental philosophy and approach to political thought is so skewed there is no prayer for advancement of adgenda.

Going to war in the political arena armed only with emotion is a tactic for the insane. I wave to you and give the helpless there-goes-a-noble-idea-in-a-foolish-head-marching-to-their-miserable-demise, In the words of Miracle Max, call out, "Have fun storming the castle!"

See that you stay well out in front so that the rest of us can avoid stepping in the charred sludge of your carcass.

Democracy does not equal freedom.

Kudos to VT
Great post! I agree completely. Although I would like to add that I don't like the direction the Repub party is heading. It is clear to most Christians that voting Repub is simply picking the lesser of 2 evils, but they are both "evil".

I would like to see an end to the 2 party system of government in this country, but I find it unlikely. The socialist school systems have so corrupted our youth and younger generations that I believe that our country is on the downside of being a great nation.

I am simply amazed at how often young people in our country are in favor of socialist/communist ideas that give control of everything to the government. They cry about how the Bush Administration has too much control, but in the next breathe want the government to control their medical coverage and everything else! I question how much history they really understand regarding politics in our country, specifically Presidential powers. I also question what makes them believe that the government can do anything well, let alone something as important as healthcare!

I make these observations as a young person - age 32. I am not an old person talking about a problem that I might not fully understand. I have been thru the public school system. I had good teachers and bad teachers. I have seen the extreme socialist tilt in our public school system. It is hard for them not to be socialist since they are part of the government machine.

The biggest problem in the schools, in addition to the socialist leanings of most of the teachers, is the inability to actually teach! Even if the teachers want to teach, which most don't - they just want the kids to "feel" good, they cannot due to the social environment in our schools. Kids have no motivation for doing well. Smart kids aren't encouraged, they are made fun of! They do just enough to pass. The schools are afraid to praise the smart kids too much and make the stupid kids "feel" bad. So they give them a D grade written in purple instead of a F grade written in red. Either way, the kid cannot read, but he feels good about it!

As long as our children grow up to ignorant and uninformed, they will continue to be easily turned into "useful idiots". As conservatives, we need to make every effort to fix this problem at the source - the schools. Until we do, we can expect many Dim Kims and the like filling up the Dem party. If they truly understood how damaging their policies are, they might be more willing to change. But they don't understand because they haven't been taught how to think for themselves.

The real immorality
Emphasizing sensational issues like homosexuality and abortions is a smokescreen to coverup the real problem with immorality in America for over thirty years now. Despite the fact that the vast majority of Americans believe in God a big majority also believe it is okay to cheat on exams to get ahead to achieve the dream of wealth and comfort without doing the hard work that it should require to become qualified for the jobs that pay for our luxurious lives. If it is okay to cheat on an exam then why not on your spouse or on your taxes or why not just steal from your employer and many do? And on a large scale you end up with an Enron. On another large scale the married family has officiall become the minority which is a disservice to children who deserve both parents and a real home to grow up in. It is easy to grab attention with sensational headlinse about gay marriages but our real problems are that the majority of Ameicans are willing to accept dishonesty as a way to succeed or just as a way of life, and this includes Christians, Jews, Atheists or people from every fath or lack of it. Until this problem is fixed America is in deep moral trouble that ammendements about gay marriage are not going to fix. The problem has been identified but no one has suggested we tackle it and fix it. It just isn't headline grabbing enough to warrant attentions and if we wait too long it will become too late.

CHOICE
Evangelicals have plenty to gripe about with the current Republicans.

RINOs generally refuse to support Conservatives in the party.

W has not fought hard on our issues and his guest worker program is only not a disaster when compared with what a Democratic House would bring.

BUT we must remember that we still haven't:
1) elected a conservative majority (Too many RINOs, especially in the Senate)

2) demonstrated enough perserverance with other Republicans such that they trust us not to cut and run (thanks Rush). Twelve years is not a long time in party politics.

3) become involved in local and pre-election party work. We need to volunteer and work in amounts that reflect our numbers in society.

4) kept our in-fighting to the primaries and willing to support the Republican in the general election. (although we have done slightly better than the RINOs)

So we have a choice: leave politics to the RINOs and see Democrats run the House Senate and White House or work for our values all year long with-in the Republican Party.

If you think the Democrats will be responsive to our concerns, just ask them why they support Pelosi?

Hydrangea
Beautifully spoken. The world may or may not like value voters, but pols recognize power expressed as votes. Vote, and you will part of the tangled mix of conflicting viewpoints pols monitor to stay elected. Stay home and you are not part of the process and our values will be ignored.

Random
Good thoughts. If there is anything good brought to light this election it is the wakeup call to conservatives to get out early and be active in the primaries. Its too late when the choice is a RINO or a D. But the RINOs do help keep R's in control of the agenda and particularly the judiciary committee. some of the R's are even conservatives, or at least wary of irking the values voter, the 2nd amendment voter, the low taxes voter, the small gov't voter, the pro life voter and so forth. We need you all.
