Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

More noteworthy than Ned Lamont's defeat of Joseph Lieberman is the loony left's and Democratic leadership's puffed-up reaction to it. I say give them more rope and let them completely hang the party they've hijacked.

Many are acting surprised at the Democratic Party's readiness to throw Lieberman overboard. They shouldn't be.

Lieberman's 90 percent liberal voting record isn't good enough for the monomaniacal antiwar fringe. Complete obedience is required. No belligerence toward terrorists can be tolerated; all venom must be reserved for President Bush and the neoconservative cabal.

While Joe Lieberman was good enough in 2000 to join Al Gore on the national ticket, he probably wouldn't even be allowed in Jimmy Carter's prestigious box at a Democratic National Convention today, unlike the rabid Michael Moore, who has rooted for the terrorist insurgents against American troops in Iraq.

No matter how loyal Lieberman has been to the party, he violated the cardinal rule against showing civility to President Bush. Worse, he supported him on the War on Terror, Iraq Theater -- a truly unforgivable sin. Didn't he realize that all interests, including America's national interests, must be subordinated to the overarching agenda of hating and demonizing President Bush? Well, he'll realize it now. Or will he?

While Republicans are falling all over themselves praising Lieberman, they, too, should be careful not to turn into single-issue advocates. While Lieberman's support for the war in Iraq against the oppressive Democratic tide has been admirable, let's not forget just how liberal he is on almost all other issues, from taxes and abortion to guns and Kyoto.

Nor should we overlook how Lieberman was virtually forced to behave as the election approached to ensure a respectable showing against his anti-Bush primary rival. He made clear he was no Bush-lover and certainly no conservative.

In a speech at the East Haven Community Center two days before the election, he couched his remarks in terms chosen to clarify -- above all -- that he was no Bush lapdog. He "opposed the Bush ban on stem cell research." He opposed the "Bush constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage." He "opposed the Bush bankruptcy bill" and "the president's efforts to undermine affirmative action." He "stood with my fellow Democrats to oppose George Bush's plan to privatize Social Security."

Let's not lose our heads and pretend Lieberman's a conservative -- such as with the Weekly Standard's toying with the idea of his running as a vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket in 2008. There are plenty of national security hawks on the Republican side who are also conservative on economic and social issues.

I respect Lieberman for doing the right thing on national security, but his post-election posturing shows how even honorable Democratic politicians are willing to pander in a desperate effort to avoid permanent ostracism by liberals.

Let's keep our eyes on the big ball. This isn't about Lieberman, but the Democrats' steadfast refusal to support the good guys against the bad guys in the War on Terror and their excommunication of anyone in their ranks who dares to buck their thought police.

While Republicans are pointing to the Democrats' purging of Lieberman as proof they've marginalized themselves as the party of Cindy Sheehan, Democratic operatives and leaders are boasting about the development and what it portends for 2006 and 2008.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid says he is more confident than before Lieberman's defeat that Democrats can recapture control of the Senate. Sen. Chuck Schumer joined read in saying, "The results bode well for Democratic victories in November." Sen. Kennedy called the election a "clarion call for change."

But these Democrats, perhaps unwittingly, are just reinforcing what we've been saying about them: They have no constructive solutions and no policy agenda other than to oppose and trash President Bush and "his war." Reid and Schumer admitted as much when they essentially dismissed Lamont's role in the election, saying it was "a referendum on the president more than anything else."

Liberal Slate magazine confirmed this Democratic mindset in an article following the July debate between Lieberman and Lamont by conceding that "Lamont is less a candidate than he is a conduit" for the expression of displeasure against Lieberman for supporting Bush on the war.

Hopefully, Democrats will continue to glean the wrong message from this election and believe they can rely exclusively on an anti-Bush wave to carry them to victory instead of resuming their long lost role as a credible party offering an alternative agenda. Such ill-begotten and delusional smugness is exactly where we want them to be going into 2006.

Not sure about Democrats in November ...
"this bodes ill for Democrats in November."

It definitely bodes ill for LAmont.

Mark my words. Lieberman will win in November. Donk support or no.

Longwinded Lefties...
I find it hilarious that all leftists/socialists/Marxists have to expend so many words to explain themselves. Look at the length of the posts for Ajhil and Kenboy.

I look forward to November, when the hard working silent majority speak through their vote.

Dems have been a little slow in their get out the vote effort the election cycle. If they don't hurry they wont be able to get the buses reserved to ship their illegal... I mean... disadvantaged/poor voters to the polls.

For those interested
I posted a new essay today, on my blog, dealing with this general issue. Just click on my name, above, if you're interested.

Stop telling the Dems to...
...stop being stupid?

Like they listen to us? Besides, it's so much fun to tease them and watch them go crazy. Would you believe we actually managed to get Left Angle to tell us his plan for saving the world from terrorism (over on Gallagher's column). I keep checking back, and it's being thoroughly disintegrated. Oh, he keeps yapping back, but his plan is so ridiculous even I (hardly an expert) found at least three holes. The experts have variously ripped it to shreds or dissected it like a frog in freshman biology. It's been very amusing to read.

Kerry's pardon; Why Reps helping Dems?
>> If I remember correctly, President Cahtah Pahdoned Bubbah from a draft-dodging conviction. <<

And almost certainly changed Kerry's less-than-honorable discharge to an honorable one. If you want to find traitors in DC, just head to the Dems.

Frankly, though, I don't see why Repubs want to keep warning Dems about their stupidity. As someone said earlier, just shut up and let them be stupid. Don't keep telling them to stop.

Comparisons
Saying that conservatives are nervous about Connecticut's election of Lamont versus Liberman is like saying that The U.S. is worried about an imminent invasion by Monaco.

Saying that the Republicans tried to unseat Clinton because of Lewinsky is like saying that the Allies wanted to depose Hitler because he wouldn't marry Eva Braun. (However, don't think for a minute that such a tryst by me with an intern or student at this university would not get me fired)

Saying that the Democratic leadership's current direction is inspiring party unity is like saying that Fidel's leadership has inspired his string of election victories in Cuba.

New Democratic slogan: "Give us unity or we'll give you death."

As a 60's & 70's Democrat, only now can I fully appreciate what we unleashed by elevating McGovern, sex, drugs & rock'n roll. I've since repented.

Joementum
Joe is going to win in November as he will probably be the one guy that a majority of voters will go for in Connecticut. He will still be a liberal, but at least he won't cut and run like the others. Sometimes you have to deal with the devil you know instead of the devil you don't know.

lieberman
He will caucus with the dems. So what have we gained?

Lazlo: I think the saying...
... which, I think originated with Reagan (God, I miss the Gip!), is something along the lines of:

"When your opponent is busy making a fool out of himself, don't interfere".

Let the games begin
My Old Man used to say; "When a man is destroying himself, don't help him."
The extreme wing of the Democratic party has become a single issue entity: Get Bush. They are destroying themselves and everything they used to stand for in pursiut of this goal.
I for one, intend to reside in my chair and watch.
They surely don't need any help.

The idea that demonRATS will "clean up" in November is silly beyond reason. What makes the dems think that after losing ground for the past 12 years (for damn good reason) that any- ANY- unhappiness in conserv and independent circles with the rep agenda will somehow translate into good news for them? I don't know a single conserv or independent who would vote for a leftist under ANY circumstances.
I can promise the lefties this- and they best get in touch with reality- no matter the anger over immigration, the growth of government, or anything else, it will NEVER mean that a voter with a brain will cross over and vote for a demon-RAT.

And know this- the rest of us know, without fail, that you people are NOT "liberals". You are LEFTISTS and nothing on the planet is less liberal than a socialist/communist/leftist/marxist. Here's a suggestion: instead of attempting to rename what you are, why not be proud of it? Why not proclaim it instead of lying about it? It's not like you are fooling anyone...

NRALifer
If I remember correctly, President Cahtah Pahdoned Bubbah from a draft-dodging conviction. Sure looks like Bubbah don't care much for the laws of the land, don't it?

Joe Liberalman is, well...
...a liberal. There's no doubt about it.

Of course, if you're looking at him from the DailyKos MoveOn perspective, he probably looks mainstream if not somewhat conservative. Just like when you look down on people from the top of a skyscraper, they look like ants. Doesn't mean they are.

It'll be interesting to see how the November election plays out in light of yesterday's events. I think the Dems are really going to be socked hard by that.

Good!

Need to Be Careful
But I still do not think Dems will overtake anything.

The Lieberman affair is indicative of little. It does show some about how the liberals have hijacked the party, but little about the future of the election.

Republicans need to stay focus and put forth ideas. Either that or tear the Dems to shreds: get nasty and call them out for who they are. :)

I'm a CT resident:
No one polls me or my family.
So I don't know how kenboy knows that the country as a whole is dissatisfied with the president.
We have 5 in our house who stand with him, with the possible exception of his immigrant stance. And the recent capture of 21 in Britain should make us all think twice and three times about our borders.

I stand with you:
Dear NRAlifer, I stand with you. And I'm definitely not alone. Just in this family, we number 5.
Though we're never polled for our opinion, we're out here.

Laugh of the day
Ajhil typed, "The idea that Lieberman is a true liberal is absurd."

From another column: "Last year, Joe's rating by Americans for Democratic Action was 80. The ACLU gave him an 83, the NAACP an 85, the AFL-CIO a 92, LULAC a perfect 100. In 2004, Joe got a 100 rating from the National Abortion Rights Action League...."

If AlGore had gotten those kind of grades at Vanderbilt, he'd have his divinity school degree.

"Since the Democratic Party really isn’t the GOP, members enjoy a considerable amount of independence in thought and action;"

But, apparently, anything less than 80% is failing. Oh well, at least you can't accuse the Donkeys of grade inflation.

Whistling past the graveyard.
I’ve tried like crazy to get on a mailing list for Republican “talking points” but without success. Ultimately, of course, it isn’t necessary, because one need only pay attention to the parrot-like utterances of GOP apparatchiks and the right wing punditry to discover what the latest list includes.
This week the official party line goes something like this:
In spite of his disgraceful record, Joe Lieberman is a true liberal Democrat [which is why he’s garnering so much support/ sympathy from conservatives!]
By ousting Lieberman, Democratic voters have chosen to endorse the rigid conformity imposed by the Democratic Party’s “stalinist” leadership [contrasting starkly with the wide latitude enjoyed by Republican lawmakers and officials in their politics!]
The result almost certainly spells doom for the Dems’ chances in November [like the 62% disapproval rating for Bush’s handling of the Iraq war, Democratic solidarity against Lieberman in the primaries must be a bad sign for them. It just … has to be!]
In this edition of Townhall alone, four nearly identical editorials appear touting these positions. Reading one after the other is almost like watching an extended SNL routine. This is what passes for independent thought on the right.
Let’s bypass for the moment the growing sense of panic among conservatives. The idea that Lieberman is a true liberal is absurd. Since the Democratic Party really isn’t the GOP, members enjoy a considerable amount of independence in thought and action; but Lieberman’s record has been digraceful:
He refused to back the filibusters of Roberts or Alito, rubber stamp Supreme Court nominees from the far right.
He’s been weak on social security issues.
He’s opposed gay marriage rights.
He voted to reauthorize the Patriot Act.xz
He voted to restrict plaintiff’s rights in class action lawsuits.
He took a truly obscene stand of the provision of emergency contraceptives to rape victims.'
And finally, he has been a consistent supporter of Bush/Cheney's disastrous invasion of Iraq.
The point will be obvious to every liberal reading this: although Lieberman may have voted with fellow Dems ninety percent of the time, the instances where he sided with Republicans have been dispositive.
But for me the defining moment regarding Lieberman came long ago in 2000, when Republicans, thwarted in their eight year, multi-million dollar, illegal campaign to unseat Bill Clinton, seized upon his affair with Monica Lewisky. In that moment, when Democratic unity in support of their president was crucial, Joe Lieberman, the slimy, sanctimonious little weasle, couldn’t wait to condemn him publically.

I’ve despised the man ever since.

And I say, good riddance!

As for the other major right wing talking point this week, it's been a regular feature ever since Bush's poll numbers dipped below forty percent: in some paradoxical way, this bodes ill for Democrats in November.

From the talking heads on various networks, to the well known "some people" invariably quoted on Faux News, to the far right blogosphere, the concensus is that Democratic unity and anger at Bush will work against them in the midterm elections.

I say, dream on, while you can, right wing nutjobs. Wake up call's not 'til November!

Oh well ...
Looks like they posted anyway.

Undeniable, as is everything I post.

Rock on!

"It's no surprise that with this rising anti-Bush sentiment a liberal state wanted an anti-Bush senator over one that is seen as pro-Bush."

You will have quite a time explaining Lieberman's win over Lamont in November, sir.

"This does not bode well for the Republicans. If Novembers turns out to be a poll on Bush, the Republicans will lose both houses."

Yeah, ok. Keep on dreaming. This is exactly the point David was making, and you are too blinded by your own Bush-hate to see the truth.

Oh well ...
I'm not going to re-post my comments.

If TownHall can't get it right, it's not my problem.

Suffice to say, kenboy, that you will be quite disappointed in November.

RWR

David 'gleans' incorrectly
I think this is the wrong message to take from the Lieberman defeat. I think it clearly shows how dissatisfied the country as a whole is with the president, something that is undenial from all of the opinion polls. Connecticut is certainly one of the more liberal states in the union. It's no surprise that with this rising anti-Bush sentiment a liberal state wanted an anti-Bush senator over one that is seen as pro-Bush. I think the real message revealed is how deeply this sentiment seems to be able to affect particular races in particular regions. No longer does it seem that these elections will all be won or lost at the regional level. This does not bode well for the Republicans. If Novembers turns out to be a poll on Bush, the Republicans will lose both houses.
