Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Across the country, Americans are suffering at the hands of out-of-control state governments and spending.

But guess what? There exists an immunization that helps relieve some of the pain associated with that sort of fiscal calamity.

The remedy already is working wonders in Colorado. So, one might ask, why, rather than exporting the treatment, are local Colorado officials in the process of killing it?

Colorado has enjoyed more than a decade of above-average economic growth. The state, with its low taxes and highly educated work force, is cited regularly as one of the best places to do business and live. Colorado ranks high in income and consumption levels and, not surprisingly, also has managed to avoid some of the recession's brute force.

*** Special Offer ***

Colorado's dynamic economy relies on a multitude of factors, but none of those factors happens to be the presence of governors or legislators. Sensible governance is made compulsory by the Taxpayer Bill of Rights and other state spending limits, which keep government lean and responsible yet also allow the state the flexibility to ask voters for more funding.

Now, as you can imagine, politicians abhor few things more than engaging in the unpleasant task of justifying their spending to the riffraff. Even more distasteful is dealing with bothersome spending limits that retard elected officials' transcendent power to help you out.

Accordingly, the bellyaching over spending caps in Colorado is ceaseless. Only a shyster politician would argue that allowing a budget to grow 6 percent over the previous year's total (and more, if you count transportation and capital projects) is unfair. Few Colorado families or businesses, I am relatively sure, enjoy that kind of latitude.

Yet this week -- only days after California voters overwhelmingly rejected their state's bid at economic anarchy -- Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter signed legislation to eliminate Colorado's spending limit, which henceforth will be referred to as "Californiacation."

For those Coloradans who still see usefulness in fiscal prudence, John Morse, a Democratic state senator from Colorado Springs, believes in you. "In the late 1400s, very few people believed the Earth was round," he explained. "By the early 1500s, we knew what was going on."

Colorado voters, treated like the dimwitted Middle Age peasantry of the 1400s, need to get their heads on straight and build a bridge to the 16th century. I agree. Morse's fight for unaccountable and disconnected government screams 1500.

Once spending limits are gone, Californiacation can begin. Having already raised property taxes -- with the help of friendly courts -- Colorado's patrons will have extra billions at their disposal. And now that the Democratic-controlled Legislature has unleashed its collective imagination and started referring to taxes as "fees," billions more will head to Denver.

Gov. Ritter has said that he would like to revisit the Taxpayer Bill of Rights question in 2011 -- bravely, a year after he runs for a second term.

What could be done with TABOR? Well, it could be eliminated. And when Morse and Ritter -- and other demagogues of doom -- push Colorado toward an Age of Enlightenment, they won't tell citizens this: Colorado governments spent almost $26 billion for the 4.3 million living in the state in 2000. And in 2008, they spent nearly $42 billion for 4.7 million people. Imagine what might have occurred without TABOR. Or just imagine California today.

In truth, TABOR forces elected officials to justify every penny they spend and constrains them to rational growth. In many ways, it cleans up government by stripping bureaucrats of power -- and nothing, I assume, is more bothersome to them.

More immediately, TABOR has helped insulate the average Colorado taxpayer from the disasters of overspending and mitigate a recessionary economy.

Other states serious about protecting taxpayers should take notice.

While they still can.

Obama's Negative Rights
He was right, of course. Most of the US Constitution is stated restrictions on the behavior of gov't, and a few enablements. CO's constitution also enables rights by preventing gov't from infringing upon them. One of the hallmarks in recent times is TABOR. Can you imagine the rare good fortune that such a things should be ratified in contemporary times? Almost unthinkable!

I only hope our continued soft turn away from vigilance for our rights does not further weaken TABOR. The right of the State to seize wealth at the discretion of a small, tiny minority that is the legislature is a worrisome power. It should properly be restricted and probably ought to have a manifestation in the federal State too.

Non-Representative Governance ...
is a myth. The bigest argument is about who is going to get what from whom.
The great solace is that economics does have a natural law and in the end the system collapses and the people people must choose between slavery or reforming themselves. They usually opt for slavery as personal reform requires self dicipline, principle and possibly danger without hope of success.

To bobby-g
I don't blame you because you cannot wrap your mind around the fact that the liberals are deep into the process of destroying America as we have known it. The are elimintating capitalism in all it's evil incarnations. They have no interest in the welfare of the people of Colorado, and just like in California, they are following the Saul Alinski RULES FOR REBELS in the destruction of capitalism by overwhelming the state and the federal government in debt. This collapses the economies of each state and the Federal government as a whole. Let them get away with it and you will be the next victim of Obama's bailout program. Once they give you that money, you are shackled to Obama. After the fraudulent elections of 2010 and 2012, and after the restriction of two terms has been eliminated, you will be as helpless as any slave in the 16th and 17th centuries. You say impossible! Well, I thought it was impossible for the government to own the makers of Chevrolets and Pontiacs at the beginning of this year! I have a better name for Californiacation...drop the second 'a'.

Hey CO, just keep voting for incumbents!
That's what we do here in CA. They have totally ruined this State and guess what? No recourse. Increase their, pay, pensions & then re-elect them. That will teach not to mess with the citizens!

We are a pool of idiots. I hope CO joins us.

Liberalspeak
The liberals in Colorado have inherited a legacy from conservatives that has left Colorado relatively unscathed by the current and coming economic disaster.
Now liberals want to undo the structure that has kept them from having to beg the feds for a bailout. Are these people just plain stupid, or is there something more insidious going on? Are they deliberately trying for economic collapse like our legislators in California? I find it hard to believe they are that stupid…
The Feds are on that track as well. Heaven help us all!
Join us at the Central Valley Tea party in Tulare, Ca on July 4th!

Taxing your way to prosperity.

An yet many Liberals still believe you can tax your way to prosperity.

They voted for Obama.

TABOR
This law requires all tax increases to be put to the voters and all surplus money not spent during a fiscal year to be returned to the taxpayers. Democrats hate and have fought against it since it was passed. It forces our government to be fiscally conservative. We recently voted to suspend TABOR limits for five years and,not surprisingly, our government continues to whine about not having enough money. I hope we aren't stupid enough to overturn TABOR.

And the problem is?
Susan: "The CO Constitution is insanely easy to amend..."

Isn't that a good thing? Better to have the power to bypass your legislators than be utterly dependent upon them.

guvment must be restricted...
... or it will spend and grow itself to suck the lifeblood out of an economy.

Perhaps the second worst legacy of Dubya (after embracing ILLEGAL aliens and willfully ignoring enforcement) was his profligate spending which set the stage for the ObaMessiah to really squander funds on guvment growth. The Left gets its reason for being from growing guvment-- as Rahm promised, they will waste no crisis (as an excuse).

The states which are in a budget crisis like Mexifornia are those which do not require fiscal responsibility and accountability.

California's legislators suck!
They are now saying they will cut programs in Sacramento. We will believe it when we see it!!
The voters spoke on May 19th and said "no more taxes, fees and programs". Don't let the tax and spend mentality take hold in Colorado. That type of policy screwed California economically and politically. Vote the legislators out that want to tax and spend. We did not do it in California, and look at the mess we are in now!

under attack in CO
The leigislature here in CO, with the complicity of the governor, is attacking us...the fees (taxes) are going up exponentially...huge increases...'fees' to register my 21YO car just went up to around $100...from $25...and that is going to cause a huge hardship...my husband's truck will go up to $150..

The CO Constitution is insanely easy to amend...

Don't put it to a vote, David
Colorado voters are increasingly like CA voters (probably because too many are from CA).

Remember Amedment 23 which guarantees that there'll be no cuts in education, no matter the economic circumstances of the private sector?

Or Referendum C which allowed the govt to keep our tax refunds for five years? Ref C was pushed by both Dems and RINO's (like then-gov Bill Owens).

Good point about "fees". These are taxes. Every year, my professional "fees" have gone up. And I see that they've added massage therapists to the list of individuals who'll be regulated and "fee'd" by government.

Watch out Occupational Therapists! You're next!

IN THE END
STATES MUST HOLD FIRM AND STATES' RIGHTS WILL HAVE A RENEWED SPIRIT.
I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA,AND IT IS AN ABSOLUTE MESS!I TELL PEOPLE,"IT'S COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU."
HOLD TIGHT AS WE SLOWLY START COMING APART.
AMERICA IS A GREAT COUNTRY,THERE IS NO MATCH IN THE WORLD AS FAR AS GIVING LIVES AND MONEY.
IT IS TIME TO BE SELFISH AND CLEAN UP WITHIN.
