Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

This week, the archbishop of Denver, Charles Chaput, told a Canadian audience, "A spirit of adulation bordering on servility" had sprouted up around Barack Obama. "In democracies," he went on, "we elect public servants, not messiahs."

Disciples at the Church of Transcendent Hope will learn, of course, that all politicians, even breathtaking orators, will disappoint. And Republicans should relearn the very same lesson.

For the past year, conservatives have been grousing about all the messianic adulation (at least, on this plane of existence) in the air. They've mocked it. They've criticized it. And with great eagerness, they've been prowling the nation trying to find their own savior to lionize.

When Sarah Palin first appeared on the national scene, she was greeted with an enthusiasm that far exceeded her achievements -- much like Obama. As soon as Palin's flaws emerged, Republican critics were treated to some Old Testament-style fury from the blindly faithful.

The newest contender for Redeemer is Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, whose intellectual prowess and personal story rival the president's. The problem is that his retort to Obama's address to Congress only rivaled Jimmy Carter.

"I don't want to hear from you ever again if you think that what Bobby Jindal said was bad or what he said was wrong or not said well, because, folks, style is not going to take our country back," an agitated Rush Limbaugh bellowed.

When Limbaugh invites me on his show (and God only knows why I haven't been on yet), I will be forced to recuse myself. Yet I do believe he's onto something. Style alone isn't going to take the country back.

Too many conservatives have convinced themselves that Obama's temporary success is attributable solely to a remarkable aptitude to blow smoke with hopey-change bromides. The party out of power, in fact, always presumes that Americans are clueless imbeciles. But what if we are getting exactly what we want?

Let's partake in a theoretical exercise: Do you believe that the majority of Americans would accept socialism or nationalization if it meant saving their homes? Would they surrender their constitutional rights to rescue their cars or 401(k)s or keep them safe from terror? Would Americans forfeit freedom for safety, liberty or "fairness"?

We do it all the time under all administrations. But today we are undergoing a radical change in the role of government. Do we want it?

According to a Rasmussen poll, 72 percent of voters say they believe that a free market economy is more advantageous than one managed by the government. So either these Americans have no clue what a free market economy means or they have no clue what sort of massive expansion of government control Washington has deployed.

Republicans can only make a comeback if they convince us, once again, that a vibrant free market, with all its risks and pitfalls, is preferable to the stagnation of a centrally controlled economy.

So it's ideas, rather than personality, that matter. The leader comes later. And if that day ever comes, perhaps the Republican Party actually will adhere to the principles it advocates.

But we'll focus on one miracle at a time.

About The Author
Republicans
Need to explain WHY what they believe is betterfor America rather then just saying WHAT they believe. The RNC should create PSAs that talk about free market principles, basic economics, the benefits of tax cuts, etc etc. We need to educate people about conservative ideas.

yet to see an indication of intelligence
"whose intellectual prowess and personal story rival the president's"

Still ain't buying that Obama is smart - not seen a shred of proof. Evil, self-important, racist, narcissistic, shallow, elitist - yes but smart, naw, I don't think so. Now the shadow puppet masters proping him up - they're smart.

Scott
Great point! There is lots of "something else" with pres hussein but its NOT intelligence.

the question
Do you believe that the majority of Americans would accept socialism or nationalization if it meant saving their homes? Would they surrender their constitutional rights to rescue their cars or 401(k)s or keep them safe from terror? Would Americans forfeit freedom for safety, liberty or "fairness"?

Yes David, I believe most Americans are petulant, immature cowards.

Barack has NOTHING to offer America outside of being a good orator. He has no private sector experience, had no executive experience, had questionable ties and yet was "the perfect man for the job".

I am still trying to figure out which job the Democrats were talking about.

not messianic
There is no messiah complex. This is an obvious case of "refusing to take a stand because if I criticize the first black president I'll be called a racist so I'll kiss up no matter what idiotic nonsense he dreams up complex".

Slaves?
One of the first things any student of politics should realize is that a nation will accept "order" over freedom, every time.

Obama inherited some large problems from Bush I and 2 and from Clinton (all advocates of a New World Order), that have stymied this country and which should have been, and could have been addressed, but were not.

I believe now that Obama, via Soros and others, is amplifying the chaos of those problems and at the right time...which i suppose may be now.... his administration is going to start solving those problems
with the advent of complete national control regardless of what our Constitution directs us to do.

These guys hate that document and they hate us too. They are going to offer us order, which we will accept, but we lose the rights guaranteed by the Constitution even if they take those rights by martial law. That is one of the reasons this administration wants to take more of our money and impose more gun and ammunition control.

I hope he fails miserably and that he and his supporters are eventually tried for TREASON. Every supporter of this democratic administration needs face the consequences of these actions. I suspect that we have a huge fight coming and I seriously doubt that most Americans will even think of getting involved to retake their country.

The Great Divide
I think Republicans/Conservatives suffer the same illness most Christians face: there's a great divide between the rhetoric and the practice. If conservatives would actually do what they say is important, more people would take them seriously.

David, Wrong
It is belief in those ideas, adherence to the principles, and execution. The majority of the Republican leadership failed that test.

They professed a belief in lower taxes (one doesn't hear the term limited government nearly enough), which causes who knows what assumptions by the electorate. In my case I thought they believed in liberty and the associated principles of a free market. Bush badly disappointed on that many times.

Finally we had the TARP bill. On what idea or principle could anyone TRULY believing in a free market vote for it?

It isn't ideas. Your are right that Americans aren't imbeciles. They see right through such hypocrisy and the Republicans reaped their just rewards. Now they want our trust back. A first step towards healing is to get rid of the 3 Republican jellyfish (Collins, Snow, Specter) who didn't stand firm on principle and thus gave us the stimulus bill.

David it is action that speaks the loudest.

The average American
is a mainstream media watching, intellectually lazy, handout craving, couch potato.

The other day, after Obama's speech, a guy at work started raving about it. He asked me what I thought. I told him that I thought it was a bunch of socialist drivel. He had no clue what "socialist" meant. After a little polling, it turns out most of my co-workers didn't didn't know, didn't care, or weren't correct in their knowledge. They now know, care, and are more correct.

Palin
Palin was right on many issues, and she was brighter than you are willing to admit. She is also more conservative than her prospective boss, who has no ear except for his own inner voices.

But you're right about one thing: we need to stand for something. Meanwhile, we're whittling sticks to put on a beaver dam while the flood is about to overtake us.

David
The majority of Americans have an IQ at or below 100. They believe what they're told.

Ideas Over Personality, Yes!
"So it's ideas, rather than personality, that matter."

Bravo! Elevate the conversation.

This Republic
was founded on timeless principles, an as one Founder said, would only work for a moral and religious people. It isn't working now because
the American Church ceded it's historical right
to speak out against immoral laws and to hold
the people accountable. The tax exemption was much more important. We can come up with all kinds of excuses, what if's and who can we find, but until we find ourselves as One Nation Under God, we will fail, as we have seen men
will fail us. The Republicans failed us big time. We will have these problems and crisis's
until we surrender our wills back to God, He is the One who gave us our Constitution..it didn't come together until the Founders knelt before Him in prayer..THAT's an historic fact, and it was Ben Franklin who suggested it.
Now we have elected leaderwannabe's who worship at the altar of baal, and sacrifice the blood of preborn (and with the O born babies) to him.
We cannot serve two masters, either it's God
or the devil..God gave us a choice last Nov
in the persons of two candidates..SARAH was for life and O was for death..the people chose death
and our way of life is in grave danger of dying because so many selfish people allowed themselves to be bought. And no Christian can
be excused if they voted for this anti life
pretender..the blood of innocents is on all the hands of every one who voted for him. Even the Pope tried to get through to that dunce, Nazi Pelousi but she hasn't listened; she knows and
one day will answer for it. Proverbs 24:11-12

THE MESSIAH VOTERS
The HYPOCRITICAL BLACK and WHITE CHRISTIANS are the very people who put the messiah in the White House even though they knew he authorized doctors and mothers to kill babies!

Fruits of education
I guess it is too late. The American voting public was educated in the public school system on all levels. Now we have the result. My only wanderment is; why our new leaders shying away calling themselves socialist? What is wrong with it?

The Deviant messiah
DNA test, college records, health records, and all the other records Obama have spent over a million dollars to hide from the American public. No Republican president have never not released his college transcript. No Republican member of the Senate have not released their college transcript. Obama is the first member of Congress not to release his college transcript, only because of the racist acceptance of liberals and hatemongers. The sexual deviancy of the sixties, the drug usage of the seventies all were experienced by Obama in the eighties the decade he his hidden from society. Yet DNA test result will reveal exactly what happen, as does his college transcript, and his medical records.

(!)
Poll after poll shows most Americans believe in conservative principles.

Why, then, did we elect a person with ideals so against conservative principles?

Look again to the polls. Time after time they tell us the President was elected because:

1. He spoke well.

2. He was going to change things.

3. He was going to help us.

4. (One I heard personally): He is handsome.

5. He's not George Bush.

So much for electing our leaders based on substance and ideals.

action not words
The Democrats are effectively laying the foundation to remain the majority party for years to come, the Republicans have a very difficult mountain to climb and will only achieve the top by staying true to their core principles at each and every opportunity, the Democrats are streetfighters and will use every trick in the book to stay where they are, only a fundamentally disciplined approach will get the job done. The question is, are they up to it?

O got no mandate
60,000,000 did not vote for him, 20 states did not vote for him, and he had NO LANDSLIDE.

Richard Nixon had a landslide. He took every electoral vote except DC, MA, and Guam.

Reagan's 2nd win was a landslide. He took every electoral vote except MN, and lost that only by 300 votes, a recount today if I ever saw one.

And Hal, when you're paying 10% inflation next year, they've boarded up half the houses on your street, and Barney the the Belch and Chris the Dodge and the Big O want more trillions out of you, I expect you to give and give and give without complaint. After all, Biden said it was patriotic. (Not that wealthy Dems. pay their taxes, but hey, they're special.)

I Blame the Public Schools!
We allowed the left to take over public education and impose their agenda--dumb down the populace and then slip a little communism in there with a promise of pie in the sky. I'm sorry to say I think it's too late to turn it around. Voters really don't have a clue about the definitions of capitalism, communism, Marxism, socialism, freedom (no, not even that one!), or why that last one beats the European bleat of "equality" every time. Sigh. At least those of you with children and grandchildren should get them out of public indoctrination camps and into religious schools.

It was clear to me after 9-11
we had became a nation of cowards. Look at the difference between 12-7 and 9-11. Did they ground all planes after 12-7? NO. Did congress go running into bomb shelders after 12-7? NO. Did the public go scream in terror after ever shadow and misdirected letter after 12-7? No. but they sure as hell did all that after 9-11.

So yes the majority is more than willing to give up individula freedom, liberity, self respect for the illusion of secuirity.

There is a great scene in the movie Seven Days in May.

President Jordan Lyman: He's not the enemy. Scott, the Joint Chiefs, even the very emotional, very illogical lunatic fringe: they're not the enemy. The enemy's an age - a nuclear age. It happens to have killed man's faith in his ability to influence what happens to him. And out of this comes a sickness, and out of sickness a frustration, a feeling of impotence, helplessness, weakness. And from this, this desperation, we look for a champion in red, white, and blue. Every now and then a man on a white horse rides by, and we appoint him to be our personal god for the duration. For some men it was a Senator McCarthy, for others it was a General Walker, and now it's a General Scott.

Obama is our McCarthy, Walker and Scott all rolled into one.

Who is the Messiah?
St. John McCain, the Maverick P.O.W.?
St. Sarah Palin, Moose Hunter and Soccer Mom?

Why?
"Why, then, did we elect a person with ideals so against conservative principles?"

Because the Republican Party has also been a liberal, socialist party since 1995.

Because the Republican candidate, John McCain was the Democrat's first choice for vice president in 2004, and is Ted Kennedy's favorite Republican.

In short, it's because the voters had a choice between two liberals, and the only real conservatives were third party.

RE: Don in Ca. at 10:37
Great Post.

Bravo!

Wu Wei
if you watch the media you will see who they have installed as the dear leader, the Fuehrer, the chairman, the Commissar what ever socialist title you want to give him. Herr Obama is our new fuehrer.

Remember who kept Specter in power
"A first step towards healing is to get rid of the 3 Republican jellyfish (Collins, Snow, Specter"

Conservatives nearly knocked Specter out last time around. He won with only 51% of the vote. The reason his conservative challenger lost is because the Republican establishment, including President Bush and McCain, strongly supported Specter.

Reason why? They WANT a liberal Republican party. They let Rush talk about "socialist" to keep those dollars and votes coming in from the rank & file, but what Republican leadership really wants is Senators like Specter and bills like Obama's stimulus.

America elected Obama
because he talked in generalities about Hope and Change and was never pressed to articulate what kind of Change he was offering. How can you be against fairness? People were so desperate to elect a black president in the Hope that it would tell the world that we had Changed and aren't racist anymore. It wasn't until he slipped with Joe the Plumber and hinted at his true intent - redistribution of wealth - that we began to see what kind of Change he was really talking about. And his campaign scrambled big time, counterattacking Joe, because they know that lots of Americans would not take too kindly to that direction. We'll probably have to wait a few more months before they start to wake up - then we can ask them "Is this the Change you Hoped for?

Only...
Only the Right uses the Biblical language to describe the President.

Very interesting, considering the fact that they also claim to have the corner on the morality market.

Obama's change is McCain's change too
If you watch it will all become clear. McCain has already complimented Obama on his Iraq withdrawal plan. McCain, like Obama, has a "Cap & Trade" pollution tax on businesses which will generate a lot of money to be used for redistribution. John McCain was also the main Republican champion of amnesty, so no doubt he will work with the new president on this.

This is the obvious pattern in the conservative media too. 99% of the space is spent attacking the horrible "socialist" Democrats, while the rest is spent praising Republicans who support those socialst Democrats, like McCain, Snowe, Specter.

It's not only McCain. Orrin Hatch supported the D.C. Representation bill, along with 7 other Republicans. 14 House Republicans supported Obama's Omnibus budget bill.

NRCC Chairman: Conservatives not wanted
'National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn said Friday that the GOP may need to recruit fewer conservative candidates in order to win in 2010.

"To be a national party we have to put blue and purple states in play," the Texas senator told an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference. "I would rather have a Republican that would vote with me 80 percent of the time than a liberal Democrat voting with me 0 percent of the time."

He told the gathered conservatives that attacking moderates in the GOP who have voted with President Barack Obama is counterproductive to the party's goals. He added that a "circular firing squad" will not help Republicans regain the majority.
'

wrong: part 1
Charisma and ideas are not mutually exclusive. Witness Washington, Lincoln, Reagan. You could also witness Jesus: both full of ideas and very charismatic.

The major-party candidate with greater public charisma nearly always wins. The republicans are right when they look for a star. The problem is not that B. Hussein has a lot of charisma. The problem is the blind adulation his followers give him. That is the "messiah complex" that is so disturbing.

If the Repubs keep running zero-charisma characters like McLame, they will keep losing. Good ideas are never enough. There must be a charismatic candidate to embody them.

wrong: part 2
B. Hussein did not win because the USA has become a nation of cowards or morons or sheeple or whatever the latest put-down for the American people is on this board. B. Hussein won because the economy was tanking and the natural (usually wrong) instinct is to blame the president. Eight years of BDS by the media really helped Hussein, too.

With the economy tanking as it was, the Repubs could have run a ticket of Washington and Lincoln, and the Dems could have put up Bozo the Clown and Ronald McDonald, and the Dems would have won. (Come to think of it, that's pretty much what the Dems did.)

tgwWhale your post
supports the idea that the country has become the home of cowards instead of the brave. Yes the ecomony takes a little down turn and the public panics into voting for a socialist without bothering to think about what that means because they are scared and herr obama promise to take care of them like good little boys and girls. That is an act of a coward.

Pet Goat
Matthew 23:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divided his sheep from the goats.
23:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left,
23:34 then shall the king say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

23:41 then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.
Does that answer your question? I guess we don't call the left, left for nothing..and since it's your party, your voters who chose death over life in your president and your
candidates..soooo

In Politics Looks Matter
Bobbie Jindal may be the smartest true conservative that the GOP has but he looks like a little nerd. A staunch conservative I try to view people and actions impartially and I am willing to go on record and say that Jindal will never be elected president. Americans still vote not only on records and ideology but on how candidates look. Remember all the female voters who wanted to bed Bill Clinton and we know the young girls just swoon over Obama.

It's a fact of life. Ron Paul had the same problem in the last election. A winning candidate has to present the complete package: A credible philosophy and message AND a winning personality and presence. You have to look like a leader to be anointed as one.

Thanks, Denise
I took French in high school and college and always wondered what the French curse words were. I liked "sacre bleu." But that expression you translate seems, to me, to be more effective in the English-Germanic version. If a Frenchman said it to me I would laugh and respond, "Merci, beaucoup."

Republicans failed & got thrown out
It has nothing to do with Obama, since Republicans were thrown out across the board at all levels of government, all across the country. The Republicans failed miserably both at the economy and defending our country, so the voters threw them out. The Republicans didn't even have a plan to improve.

The crap about messiah is almost funny considering that only Republicans say it. No Democrat or independent ever called Obama anything like savior. In a way I can understand why Republicans are confused, considering we just had 8 years of a president who refused to speak or even try to help the country. I guess now that we have a president who isn't a mime, some Republicans are shocked to see a president giving speeches, taking charge, and trying to fix things. Really though Obama is just acting like a normal president -- Bush was the deviant.

Marxist Millionaire to Chicagoize USA...
Barry Soetoro is what many of us thought he was - a smooth talking, quasi socialist, race hustler. Nothing more.

The idiots who voted him want a Nanny state government because Obambi played the "class warfare" schtick perfectly and it worked with the weak-knee, limp-wristed libs.

Add in 24/7 media cheerleading with photos of the Kenyan/Indonesian moooslim boy showing him with a soft lighted background to emphasize his Divine Nature and you can get 52% of the public voting in his favor.

Barry has a tenuous, questionable connection and allegiance to our country - he identifies with the turd world - with mooslims, africans, asians and the like. What do you expect? He is what he is.

Lots of Reasons
Obama was elected because we have allowed everyone and his dog to vote. Welfare deadbeats and other simpletons that should be out of the gene pool pour into the voting booths and vote Democrat every time. He was also elected because of voting irregularities. Cities that allow people to vote for days on end, those who do not require proper identification, and those who do not abide by any reasonable policy set the stage for voter fraud. I suspect that foreign nations also helped Obama win. Monies collected on the Internet are impossible to regulate and monitor, therefore soliciting funds in this manner should be prohibited as should fund-raising in foreign nations. A complicit news media that did no investigative reporting, disregarded or glossed over problematic areas of the candidate, and provided no vetting at all aided and abetted this process. Obama would never have been elected in a nation with an unbiased media. In addition to all of these things, Republicans had a lousy candidate.

We used to lock up people
who thought they were Napoleon, now we have a guy who is equally screwy thinking he can do all the stupid things he espouses..He can, if you don't mind paying for the privilege of destroying your own country.

The only way to stop this is to starve this gov't till it dies...change your W-4's, claim a dozen kids so that they can't take anything from your paycheck and then escrow the money until they get the message...they cannot lock up everyone, in fact I think it's perfectly legal, hell they will probably give you a cabinet post.

It's the only way short of the armed rebellion that is coming...there are some seriously pizzed off people out here and it's growing exponentially.

If we don't stop this fool, our kids will never enjoy what we enjoy, they will be nothing more than cash cows for bambi's recipient class and this country will be nothing but one more seat at the UN's table which is what he and his commie handlers want in the first place.

Make no mistake, this guy isn't stupid, he knows exactly what he is doing and doing what's right for America is not it...if he was really trying, he'd have cut both taxes and spending which was how Reagan did it..instead he does the opposite despite the historical evidence and the advise of experts.

Redistributing the wealth.......
B. Hussein is doing exactly what he said he would do - redistribute the wealth. From normal, average middle class Americans to the lower income people who are often blacks, latinos (often immigrants, legal and illegal), muslims, etc.

Translation: from white Americans to non-white Americans.

That's Barry's "reason for being".

Bi-racial boy's goals......
Enjoy a diminished standard of living thanks to Barry-boy and his worldview that the USA is too srong, too proud, too independent.

Barry-boy wants to bring us down until we'll no different than Belgium, Thailand or Kenya. That's Barry's psychology. As a wimp himself, as a slick salesman, he believes he can convince enough gullable, self-loathing white libs to join him on his quest of bringing down the USA a few steps on the ladder.

No, we can't drill and refine more oil - the peons need to pay more for oil so we can get the country moving on windmills and solar panels - what a joke! Neither can we build more nuclear power plants - Barry-boy wants "green energy sources". Give me a break.

obama
i knew exactly what i was doing when i voted for obama. 8 years of bush's crony capitalism where the top 1 percent saw increases of 800 per cent in income while median family income went down. instead of ceo's making 25 times the average workers salary its now 300 times. i voted for obama because i thought he was the best guy to deal with these inequalities. and he will. you can call it class warfare or wealth envy or whatever you want but this is gonna stop. and if you all don't like it well thats too bad. find yourself a candidate and get him elected is all i can tell ya. but all this secessionist and revolution talk is just plain silly. most people of wealth are soft and i see nothing here that would change my mind about that.

bet
you see the key to all of this is getting off the addiction to middle eastern oil. and if an old oil man like t. boone pickens tells you that you can't drill your way out of this and you need to go green it would behoove you to listen. he oughta know.

Roy from IL
You haven't got a clue. You voted for Obama because you're too dumb to think through issues intelligently, and too naive to realize you've been sold a pack of lies.

Before you change your mind, Roy, you need to have one. And as an Obama kool-aid drinker, you obviously do not.

Obama basically secured the nomination in May of 2008. The Dow was at 13,000 plus at that point. It's now around 7000, and it drops everytime this dimwit we call a president opens his fool mouth. Wall Street anticipated the socialism and big spending policies that would come, and they were correct. There is zero confidence in this man and his policies, except from idiots like Roy, who wouldn't know a fact if it bit him on the rear end.

annfan
thank you for your kind words ann. i realize that i am dumb so the only words i can come up with is we won.deal with it.

Wu Wei
Actually, Oprah called Obama "the One" and Farakhan called him "the Messiah." We couldn't make this idolatry up because we conservatives don't look to the government to save us.

Religious conservative?
' Actually, Oprah called Obama "the One" and Farakhan called him "the Messiah." '

Well, Louis Farrakhan is a religious conservative. I don't know what party Oprah belongs to. Either way those are just TWO individuals who said it ONCE. It is CONSERVATIVES who keep repeating "messiah" over and over and over again.

Proselytizing for conservatism
I would say not to overestimate the cognitive processes of the average American. Most don't have a good grasp of what "free market" means (thanks, Bush). They think that if people are doing things that pertain to the market, like sell things or work for a company or relocate for a job or go to school, then we have a free market. They don't understand that critical to the concept of the free market is freedom from government interference. They also do not understand all the ways in which government has its hands throughout the private sector. Free markets require that citizens think about all issues in terms of the inalienable rights of the individual. The average citizen today does not. They must be taught.

For them to accept it, it is necessary but not sufficient to explain why capitalism is the most eminently practical and why any degree of statism will only act to destroy it, not make things better. It is also necessary that citizens begin to see capitalism as moral. They must see that capitalism is the system of property rights--which entails all other rights. They must see that government interference is wrong because it is a violation of individual rights, that the individual is an end in himself and not chattel or cattle to be sacrificed for some ineffable greater good. Indeed, since a society is not a super-organism but is simply a number of individuals who are bound together by geography and culture, this expression really means the sacrifice of some individuals to others.

richard
