Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Democrats have concocted a surefire political victory. They've notified America that the so-called "stimulus" bill might take a long time to work -- which is exceptionally handy, considering we always come out of a recession at some point.

The problem is there is no evidence that colossal government spending and expansion will help a nation claw its way out of economic trouble or, more importantly, generate a single job through real economic growth.

So what do you do with an unproven idea? Well, you go big. Make the proposal the most expensive ever to adorn paper -- or, more precisely, a trillion scraps of paper. Scare the holy living hell out of detractors with doomsday scenarios worthy of Nostradamus.

And for God's sake, unite! Those pikers in Congress can do a lot better than $825 billion. Surely, there are more states to bribe, more special interests to reward, more unions to pacify.

And Republicans? Just throw in a tax cut. They're easier than Holly Golightly.

Remember when Democrats complained that Bush tax cuts coupled with out-of-control spending would saddle our children with crushing debt? They were right; it's just impolite. Barack Obama will leave it for our great-grandchildren, too. We never are going to have to look those suckers in the eye anyway.

But please, let's stop calling this a "stimulus" plan. How does another $650 million for digital TV coupons (why don't we just buy a million new high-definition televisions and hand them out?) spur economic growth? What does $600 million for government vehicles do other than allow bureaucrats to do nothing more efficiently?

Hey, are you under investigation for widespread voter fraud? No problem. Like ACORN, you might be in for billions in "stimulus" aid, too. And a proud nation needs more than just $200 million to repair the National Mall; it needs an additional $21 million in sod.

Speaking of stimulus, Nancy Pelosi's contribution to this plan (though it may not survive) was to potentially spend hundreds of millions on condoms. There was another $335 million that could fund programs to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

I, too, support luxurious lawns and the widespread use of prophylactics. I, too, fervently oppose sexually transmitted diseases. But how any of this fuels economic recovery is a mystery.

An analysis of this urgent "stimulus" plan by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says that less than half of the $30 billion in highway construction money would be released into the economy over the next four years.

The CBO also found that only $26 billion of $274 billion in infrastructure spending would be used by next fall. Only 64 percent of the entire stimulus would reach the economy by 2011.

Just in time for elections. Probably just a coincidence.

In the early 1980s, we dug out of a deep recession by easing the tax burden on businesses and American people to save real jobs rather than creating jobs we didn't need.

Now, worse than all the pork or the massive de facto tax hike (someone pays -- always) is the mass acceptance that we can stimulate the economy by buying our way out of trouble.

Democrats, in fact, have exploited our alarming situation by trying to enact highly ideological policy that is jammed with political payoffs (the very same crime they accused the Bush administration of committing).

Because in this "stimulus" plan, the only things stimulated are the imaginations of power-hungry partisans.

About The Author
Oink, Oink, Oink
Prok, pork, and more pork. Obama said they would be no pork in his bill. The whole bill is nothing but pork. When Bush does something it is a crime. When the Democrats do the same thing only bigger it is a stroke of genius. Yeah, right.

Truth
Soooooo incredibly true.

If the government did nothing.

History tells us if the government does nothing we will come out of the resession.

People will need to buy a new car, refrigerator, sofa, beds, clothes sooner or later and that stimulate the economy at a more sustainable growth rate.

The Liberals stimulus plan is deception at its worse.

Col. Billy Mitchell
liberals lie all the time. That's why Obama is president. Now with a money happy president who's spending money like he won the lottery it's sad that democrats rarely oppose their own party members and are ostracized if they do. I wonder what the repubs will do.

Needed: Protein, not Caffeine
This is SOP for the Dems.

Remember how Bill Clinton in 1993, walking in, immediately pushed for a big aid-to-cities bill that was nothing but a pork payoff to his supporters. When that was balked, he morphed it into a "crime bill" mostly by tacking on a gun ban (which Arlen Specter treacherously helped pass.) Of course, BC had a pretty decent economy (not "the worst in 50 years") to work with, which he proceeded to loot by using the CRI & other mechanisms to blow big bubbles, for which we're now paying.

Col. Mitchell, you are spot-on, & that's the crux of this whole deception. The "stimulus" spending will be falsely given credit for a recovery that would take place anyway, assuming the gov't doesn't abort it, say by rationing energy & confiscating the remaining private capital & profits to feed the beast.

What's the old saying that if you treat a cold aggressively, you can cure it in seven days; if you neglect it it will hang on for a week?

The economy needs nutrition, not 'stimulation.'

Bribing Iraqis vs. Bribing our own
It is an outrage American tax dollars are spent here in our Homeland.

Monies could be better spent in Iraq.

Bush was right.

Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize winner in Economics, declares Iraq venture will ultimately cost American taxpayers 3 trillion dollars.

Some estimates have the total even higher.

There are 25 million Iraqis.

25 million divided into 3 trillion is about $120,000 in American tax dollars for every Iraqi man, woman, and child.

Take your pick: Bribe state governments in our Beloved Republic with a portion of the $850 billion, or bribe Iraqis with the $3 trillion(and counting).

Now, 850 billion dollars is a tidy sum, but it is only a quarter of what American taxpayers are divvying up on behalf of liberating and democratizing a bunch of Muslims.

Certainly we can spend money here on our own, especially in light of recent revelations of our decaying infrastructure..Minneapolis bridge collapse and, more recently, huge water main break in Maryland.

Our airports resemble those of third world nations. NYC subway system dates from 100 years ago.

It is not a crime to spend tax money on our own needs, our infrastructure and electrical grid...unless having more "brownouts" in the future is deemed to be a prudent taxpayer-saving virtue.

Of course it is a crime to spend tax money unwisely.

One last point, conversion to digital television is not the same as high definition television.

And Harsanyi's attempt at ridicule in suggesting the government simply purchase millions of high definition sets(instead of digital television coupons), fails to understand the distinction.

But I actually agree with him there.

The television broadcasting industry ought to be providing its customers with this coupon, not the government.

A Planned Failure?
It is obviously not a stimulus bill. A worsening condition must be planned so the party in power can falsely claim " .... a failure of Capitalism!" and exercise even more government control. New New Deal? They are doing the same thing FDR did (which BTW only prolonged the depression recovery) but more !! Already banks have been nationalized. Businesses are next ?(think: auto, oil companies, coal users) ? Infrastructure expenditures are not going to stimulate the economy more than a modicum amount. It is impossible to cure credit/debt problems by incurring more debt! It only leads to inflation which is an insidious tax on everyone. Solution: Raise taxes on the "rich?" (Atlas will surely Shrug). Look also for squelching the voice of opposition. Note: Among many other porky things, the bill contains 4 bil. for ACORN which is Obama's vote getting, ballot box stuffing, organization!

It's a Bush/Paulson segue. Pass a 600 page bill NOW or else! Don't bother taking time to read it....!

Oh: and the way to avoid "Earmarks?" Call it a stimulus.

dictatorship of the proletariat?
no, permanent dictatorship by the democrats. that is what the "stimulus" will buy. it is loaded with payoffs to democratic co-conspirators, and bribes to the useful idiots that voted for obama. liberal vultures, democratic hyenas, and welfare recipient dogs all fighting for a share of the american corpse.

PLANNED STIMULOUS
JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALLOTTED MONEY FOR CERTAIN ITEMS DOESN'T MEAN THEY WILL USE IT FOR SUCH.TO THEM,IT'S ALL A GAME AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAVE A CLUE.

We have an economy troubled by

bad debt and we are going to rescue this economy by increasing our debt by the trillions.

THIS is what makes sense to our political leaders?

Obama 'Promises to Stay the Course'

Global Warming has America in an icy grip.

Thousands are without power and many are trapped because of Global Warming.

Barack Obama promises to send 'Tire Gauges' to those without energy to heat their homes.

Barack Obama 'Promises to Stay the Course' until global warming loses its icy grip on America.

Many are burning Al Gore's book 'Inconvenient Truth' to stay warm.

Actually no
The biggest con is Social Sick-you-rity enacted by Democrud president FDR!

i read every townhall article.....when will someone stand up and demand that OUR justice do its job. george soros hand picked obamma. george soros furnished 200 millon for obamma's campaign in untraceable credit cards. when will one of townhalls "esteemed" columnist push for this investigation...without george soros, obamma would not be the pres today.

No, it will NEVER work

No worries, mates. The "stimulus" bill will NEVER work. Not even after a long time.

This is because with all these bailouts and all that psychopathic spending in there (birth control?!?), this thieving, lying, damnable Congress, gang-led by that contemptible, bicep-flexing Shrieker of the House, has mortgaged the souls of our descendants down to about the 10th generation.

By the time these worthless mountebanks -- oops, I mean public servants -- get done with this medicine show of theirs, their will be no money in America, no prosperity, no national wealth -- indeed, there will be no nation.

Nice, nice work, "liberals," Dummy-craps, phonies. You will stand smack dab in the midst of all the ruin, misery and devastation you've caused, and you will still be lying about it, straight out of your duplicitous faces. I fully expect it.

But that's your way, the way of the whore: "She eats and wipes her mouth and says, 'I have done nothing wrong.' "

Too many in this present generation are intoxicated with the maddening wine of your fornications, you "liberals," Dummy-craps and phonies, but future generations will curse you.

Rightly so.

You are rapidly becoming my favorite conservative humorist. Great column!

PS: Where's the photo?

I Knew Obama would fail.
It will not be long before he has actually be
in office for a month, and the economy is still
a mess.

You are right. I concede. The whole thing
was a big mistake. Bring back Reagan, bring
back Bush. No wait, bring back Cheney. He's
my favorite.

It is people like you - sane, contemplative,
level headed - who make America great. Thanks
for your input. Mind if I chew on it for
a while. You have given me a lot to think
about.
