Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Do all Americans truly have a yearning to fundamentally "remake" our nation? There must be a subversive minority out there that still believes the United States, even with its imperfections and sporadic recessions, is, in context, still a wildly prosperous and free country worth preserving.

Some of you must still believe that politicians are meant to serve rather than be worshipped. And there must be someone out there who considers partisanship a healthy organic reflection of our differences rather than something to be surrendered in the name of so-called unity -- which is, after all, untenable, subjective and utterly counterproductive.

How about those who praised dissent for the past eight years?

Is there anyone who still believes the Constitution was created to ensure each citizen has liberty and the ability to pursue happiness rather than a guarantee of happiness -- and a retirement fund, health care, a job, an education, a house

Yes, two important historical events transpired Tuesday. The first was the peaceful transfer of power from one freely elected politician to another -- an uninterrupted streak we often take for granted. Then there was the first presidency of an African-American, which proves we can transcend our unsightly past.

After that, what we had was just another presidential election. We conduct one every four years. For those of you not shouting hosannas, it might have occurred to you that we are suffering from a rampant sickness in American life that casts government as the author of your dreams and an Illinois politician as the linchpin of your hopes.

Tom Brokaw -- whose hero, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, corralled thousands of innocent Asian-Americans into internment camps and assaulted the Constitution at every turn -- went as far as to compare Obama's inauguration to the Czech's fight for freedom over Communist oppression.

George W. Bush's administration, which I had a multitude of problems with, was not comparable to a tyranny, despite the protestations of his emotional detractors.

Liberals, rightly, recoil at the prospect of conservatives dictating which morals they should live by. Obama, though, has spent the past year preaching his own brand of morality -- with a list of demands. Everyone, you see, "must" sacrifice. As Michelle Obama recently explained, "Barack Obama will require you to work. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed."

Those of us who refuse to buy left-wing orthodoxy will remain "uninformed" and, inevitably, "selfish."

To be fair, I'm uncertain what Obama is going to require of me during these next four to eight years. I do know, right off the bat, that if he passes his centerpiece trillion-dollar ideologically driven government expansion (in the guise of a "stimulus" plan), he will be demanding my grandchildren work overtime to pay it off. That's after they're done paying Bush's tab.

Obama challenges Americans to have "a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves." So if you find massive concentrated power in Washington a turn-on, you've found your higher purpose.

But surely, most of you found meaning in something greater than yourselves long before some politician demanded it.

To require such fealty to power in the name of patriotism was once repugnant to the left. Now, with the right guy in charge, apparently, it can be embraced once again.

Change, indeed.

About The Author
Re: lilly
I found another article in that same "Atlantic" issue that should give everyone pause: "Silenced Majorities," about the filibuster. Our Founders had no intention of setting up a pure democracy for the simple reason that a pure democracy would permit the majority to "freely and democratically" vote to enslave any minority. So we were given a Republic with safeguards to protect minorities from a "tyranny of the majority." The filibuster is part of that protection. The Democrats had a filibuster-proof majority from 1964 - 1968 and even leading Democrats were worried; when **Democrats** are worried about having too much power then everyone should sit up and take notice.

The article about the Founders "Big Mistake" did not impress me at all. The Executive Branch was designed to be weaker than the Legislative and Judicial Branches but with a different set of priorities. Foreign policy, e.g., was put in the hands of the Executive Branch because quick decisions will be necessary; the President, as Commander-in-Chief of the military, also needs to make decisions quickly. We haven't won a war since WW2 because Congress has usurped those powers. Then they blame the President for the results.

Our government was not founded with efficiency in mind; it was founded with the purpose of preventing any person or branch from getting too much power. The fact that Executive Orders have made undesirable changes is because Congress failed to apply the brakes. The Founders laid out the framework but it is up to the voters to keep tabs on its operation.

Voters have tolerated this
Having read Harsanyi's book "Nanny State" and observed what happens at the polls I am not surprised at what happened in November. For decades, voters have supported seemingly innocuous issues that were supposedly "for our own good. We have "no smoking" laws, laws governing the content on our TV's, seat belt laws, ad nauseum. We have "Child protection" laws (and officials who are more interested in breaking up families than in protecting children) and should be demanding why that is.

Locally, six boys who were abused by a lesbian couple escaped from that situation but Children's Services wanted to hand them back!

As to why there is such an effort to destroy families, a look into modern history will give the reason. During the periods of the Third Reich and the Soviet Union government wanted children to spy on their parents and report anything said against the government; however, families were sufficiently close-knit that they stuck together.

All of the "Nanny State" laws voted into place have served one major purpose: more power for Big Brother. When I was in grade school the teacher read us the fable about the Arab and his camel and we discussed it in class. For the uninitiated, first the camel wanted his nose in the tent, then his head etc. At dawn the camel had the tent all to himself. That is the ultimate purpose of all the "feel good" legislation that is passed "for our own good."

45 Cal TX on Coon/Possum recipes
First time I've heard of that in years.. My Father would eat damn near anything, but Possum and groundhog were his favorites..My Mom's brothers used to tease Dad about the whole thing and always said they preferred the process U desceibed but after all the oreparation "u throw the meat away and eat the screen wire"!! A variation of that was with Carp.. U broil carp on a pine board until brown/crispy then throw away the fish and eat the board.. Just a wise-a$$ HillBilly story..

Unintended consequences...
Those who want to remake this country in their own socialistic or Marxian image do so at their peril and ours, for they risk inviting a beast among us which further promotes the "culture of death."

Socialism, Marxism, Maoism, Fascism, and Naziism are not merely repugnant for the way they devalue life, but also in the way they devalue the QUALITY of life.

Our society has been a meritocracy for the most part, with people being advanced or promoted on their own merits.

What the socialist advocates among us desire is NOT a meritocracy, but rather a system where the strong prey upon the weak. Survival of the fittest is the name of their game, or at least the survival of the most clever and most unprincipled.

And the beast they risk inviting into our midst is a by-product of rule by the strong: ASSASSINATION.

Imagine a society where in order to advance yourself, either as an individual or as part of a group, you simply eliminate those who stand in your way. Openly doing so might invite the pretense of justice against you by the powers-that-be, but doing away with a rival in a way that can't be traced back to you... such is the behavior that the socialism advocates among us find so praiseworthy. In fact, the number-one rule they all seem to live by these days is "DON'T GET CAUGHT!" Investigation is not the forte of justice by their way of thinking, because life is cheap in their worldview... and no one cares enough to bother.

So do what you can to oppose these wolves-in-sheep's-clothing at every turn. We can't let them make things worse than they already are. Now is the time when we who know better must draw the line and say to them, "This is as far as you go, and no further!"

Minorities
John writes:
"Yes. You have become a minority. Thank God for that."

Don't know if I would blame God for that but look at the bright side. Liberals protect and defend minorities. Or so they claim.

John in PA
Not for long...we're the ones having babies. You are killing yours.

Richard TX
East and west coast have gone bye, bye.

Richard TX
Too late.

John ask yourself
if American becomes a carbon copy of France, England, and Germany then who will stop the next Hilter, Stalin or Tojo? Socialist countries have for 100 years been unable to stand up to tyrants so if American follows the socialist path who then can stand up to the tyrant?

Personally I don't care about what happens to Europe I just hope that there is someone left to stop them before they reach the eastern or western seaboard.

Nancy
This is interesting:

"Have I become a minority believing that we need to stand as one culture -- the American culture -- with our laws and rights based upon one set of christain values and morals?"

Yes. You have become a minority. Thank God for that.

Liberalized America?
How can this be happening to us? I can't believe the majority of Americans want a liberal socialist nation. Have I become a minority believing that we need to stand as one culture -- the American culture -- with our laws and rights based upon one set of christain values and morals? And what can I do to reverse the tide of liberalism?

Lulu
Is correct there are lots of legal ways to buy and sell without paying taxes.

Avoiding taxes as appose to evading them is legal when dealing in after market merchandize.

The deprecation of merchandize after the original purchase means you can buy things for less then the taxes would be on original purchase.

Take advantage of this before no one can buy or sell with out some kind of mark.

Mod Mark don't worry
under the obama health plan you will not be allowed to eat any fried food unless you can afford the high fired food tax. Potatoe chips, anything with butter will be taxed at 300% to pay for our nationalized health care system. The food police like they now have in the UK will come around and make sure you are cooking out health government approved food. You will also be required to provide on demand to the exercise police you exercise log to show that you are getting the required amount of government approved exercise or have paid your couch potatoe tax.

The
libs wanted a king, they got one.
I prefer the rallying cry of the Revolution,
"No King But Jesus"..works for me!

Excellent article,
Mr. Harsanyi. Too bad you are only preaching to the choir, except for Mod Mark that is. But, he doesn't listen anyway. :-)

The One
The Monad is born out of the pressure from the Male (Republican) and Female (Democrat) primordial snakes applying constant pressure on the people.

With a big bang “The One” will appear from the egg to bring order to the universe.

All the elements will be brought in line The Earth, Water, Air, Fire (energy) will become under control of “The One”.

No one will own the land all boundaries will disappear.

Crime and Sin will become a civil rights movement.

There will be no way to tell if you’re male or female.

The Monad wants you to worship him/her in him/her image.

The Monad is the light barer.

This knowledge will liberate and enlighten you right out of your life, liberty, property and pursuit of happiness.

I love Social Alchemy it’s so predictable through out the ages.

Col Mitchell on the nail!
Quite true that groats lack integrity--most obvious example of this is Canada's officious "multiculturalism" program (copied stupidly by the Brits, under Brown's Labour--which only illustrates your point) first foisted upon English Canada (his home-province Québec was exempted) by treasonous Liberal PM Trudeau!

TOM BROWKAW!???
IS A DEMA LIB!,BARRY IS HIS HERO!

Mod Mark:
You asked for recipes:

Feral cats are quite tender. Ask any Vietnamese you know for recipes. They all have them. It is quite good.

'Possim and Coon:

Clean and boil whole for six hours to cook and tenderize. Then place in a baking pan on a wire mesh about three inches high. Season to taste and cook for another four hours. That will allow most of the fat to drip below the meat. It is then good to eat.

Actually it is excellent. It was my uncle's favorite meat. My aunt had to take all day to cook it but it was great.

Laugh if you will ModMark
but I decided during the campaigns that I would not work to pay for those who won't. So just an example, but one thing I did was all my Christmas a Birthday shopping for 2009 before Obama was innaugurated.

And who needs recipes parts is parts especially if you fry it.

Col.Billy Mitchell
I guess great minds think alike, I feel the same way about Obama's Speech. My Grandson helped protect this country for 6 years, and I resent the hipocracy of the use of our Military yesterday, after refusing to support them and their mission juring the campain. I also resent President Bush being blamed for the Economy, when it did not decline until the CHANGE, in the Congress and Senate in November 2006. The Dow was an all time high at 18,000, and now it is around 8,000. I almost believe that President Bush even helped him write most of his speech. What was said campaigning was probably the only way to win the election with the current represenitives. I do wish the best for this President, regardless of how our Past President was treated, I thought that was what Americans were supposed to do. God Bless, and open eyes America.

Lon
I think the word you were looking for was "inherited", not "hired"...because that would make no sense. That little tidbit aside, riddle me this: How can I work to make the economic situation nationally better? What can I do to make sure that the people at GM and Chrysler learn how to run an automotive company? What are you going to do to revive the housing market or banking industry?

You see, the talk about us all working together to make the economy better is just that...talk. Anything that we may have been able to do in the private sector is being cancelled out by a government that seems intent upon taking control of the private sector. The government has decided that it is the answer to all of our problems, without recognizing that government intervention in the private sector is at the root of the problems!

But hey, I know you're walking on sunshine right about now, so don't let my little dose of reality kill your Obamabuzz. Float on grasshopper...float on!

LULU SAYS,
"Basically starve the beast -- we should not subsidize our own inslavement."

Why not LuLu? We have been subsidizing the descendants of slaves for approximately 50 years!

I imagine there will be millions of Americans doing exactly what you suggested but, not by choice.

There are ways to protest
peacefully. Stop spending money on anything but absolute necessities. If you are a two income family -- figure out if you can be a one income family. If you currently work overtime or a second job to earn a little extra -- stop. If you are a small business don't invest in expansion only to give your profits to government. Home improvements -- don't do any that will raise your property taxes. Repair rather than buy knew. Buy things at yard sales, ebay, etc. If you smoke stop when the fed tax increases or roll your own.

Basically starve the beast -- we should not subsidize our own inslavement.

We will keep the power in our own hands.

Useful, Interesting Article Online
Wherever you stand on Obama, Bush, Reagan, or any other US president, you may be interested in reading "The Founders' Great Mistake" by Garrett Epps. It's in the current issue of "The Atlantic" and is online---google it by title. This article explores the historic role of Alexander Hamilton in designing the US presidency, with special focus on the concept of "the unitary executive"---eg how much solo power the president should have and how much power Americans want their president to have.

How dare he
How dare he challenge us? What does he think he is a king? Oh that's right he is a president who hired an economic mess from his predecessor and thinks we should work as a country to address it.

Presumably Harsanyi is just practicing for when he has a legitimate complaint to make of Obama.

Pride Will Always Bring Failure
It's okay to be proud but when pride comes before common sense and truth. It will be your downfall.

Obama and his followers are so proud that he is first Black American President that they have thrown aside any common sense and truth to keep him up on his pedestal.

The last few days have been surreal in honoring Obama without questioning his back ground, his policies as the past presidents have been scrutinized.

Who will be brave enough to second guess a coronated KIng after the past week of constant praise ?

Brokaw
I find it interesting that you mention Tom Brokaw. It seems he is only one of a long line of "unbiased" reporters that pretend to seek the truth when the evidence shows that they are only interesting in securing fame and money. I guess more than half of us (based on voting) favor the greedy choice over doing what is right and consistent with the constitution.

wbheff writes:

Keeping in mind that he just got there are you willing to to not pay any social security or income tax and see what BHO's administration does?

Should a "universal" health care plan be enacted like one of the recently proposed ones then everyone will be required to pay into it. Now mind you Congress writes the laws (or should) but the Pres is head of the branch that enforces the law.

CROWNING KINGS
With the mainstream media crowning Barack Obama king of America, starting after his inauguration (coronation), The White House’s official name will be changed to, Read it at, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/2009/01/obama-to-chang e-name-of-white-house.html

Mr. Obama will not "require" me to do one flipping thing! As an elected office-holder, he is my employee, not my ruler.

Good title
The American Revolution was meant to ensure that we might have no more kings and no more foreign masters. Obama may turn out to be both.

Note to Col. Billy: "Liberals are not deep thinkers." Indeed, though you could've shortened that sentence by one word without any great loss of meaning.

Liberals simply lack integrity

Liberals simply lack integrity. Both moral and intellectual.

If you listened to Obama's speech, all the words could have just as easily been spoken by George W. Bush.

Obama says them, they applaud. Bush says them they scream and yell.

Liberals are not deep thinkers.
