Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It seems like the end of the world. A deadly virus is sweeping across the globe killing off young and old alike. Media coverage goes round the clock dwelling on the danger. Sounds like the plot for a movie – Stephen King’s “The Stand” or maybe Will Smith’s “I Am Legend.” It’s also the media plot for the avian flu scare of 2006 that went nowhere.

Like most people, you have probably already forgotten. The media gave the danger tons of news coverage and ABC even delivered a cheesy made-for-TV apocalypse movie. Then … not much happened. The World Health Organization reports there have been 257 deaths from avian flu – worldwide. Less than 100 of those have come in the last two-plus years (2007-2009). But the media never looked at the symptoms of their own coverage to find out what was wrong.

This time, the threat might be real. U.S. officials have declared a public health emergency over the swine flu and international officials are warning this could become a pandemic. The virus has already spread to Europe and there are more than 100 dead just in Mexico.

But maybe the easiest way to tell that we should take this incident seriously is that the media never had a chance to pre-hype what might happen. So now, their round-the-clock response is, at least, driven by some actual events.

Avian flu was the ideal news story – one journalists love. It was a looming threat and it loomed so long you could write countless stories about it – complete with lots of on-location video, colorful graphics and expert commentary. It wasn’t just a news story in slow motion. It was a news story that never went anywhere at all. Every death is a tragedy, but put those 257 deaths in perspective. According to the centers for Disease Control, 36,000 Americans die each year just from flu. That’s less than one one-hundredth of 1 percent of the total flu deaths. And 257 are the total number for a global population of 6.5 billion.

In other words, avian flu was more the threat of a threat – and those are easy to hype. Ask ABC. In March 2006, ABC brought the apocalypse into our living rooms. The “news” network highlighted a doctor who predicted “that 50% of the population could die” because of bird flu.

As part of a weeklong series “Bird Flu: Fears, Facts and Fiction; What Americans Need to Know,” reporter Jim Avila interviewed Dr. Robert Webster “the father of bird flu.” Webster came right out and predicted that the virus would mutate. He was storing three months of food and water in his home like some Y2K survivalist, and said the chance of such an event were “about even odds.”

That’s what you need to be thinking about every time you look at the news stories about swine flu. Is this a national crisis? Not hardly. The United States is remarkably well-prepared with stockpiles of the drug Tamiflu just for such an emergency. You can credit the president who made that happen – George W. Bush – but you can bet the media won’t. According to Reuters, Obama “announced steps to release some of the U.S. stockpiles of the anti-flu drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.” But you’d have to find stories written years ago to see that Bush was the one to, as The Washington Post reported, “create a government unit to oversee response to a bird flu pandemic or bioterrorism attack.” That was in 2006.

That won’t be the only gap in the news stories about swine flu. With at least 1,600 official cases, Mexico is the hotbed for this virus. Where is the discussion of border security to keep the virus out of the United States?

It’s nonexistent. Yet, when Mexicans complained American guns were somehow to blame for their drug war, the mainstream media hyped it constantly. Now that there is a major threat to American health, there is no real discussion of guarding the border.

CNN claims that “customs and border protection is watching passengers for signs of illness.” That sounds comforting until you read the April 27 Reuters report on what is really happening at the border and that “Mexicans crossing by car and foot seemed unconcerned by the influenza scare and only a handful wore masks.”

Meanwhile, even the horribly run European Union is advising against the European non-essential trips to Mexico and other nations are taking the issue seriously. ABC News said that “In Japan, officials have been taking temperatures of those returning from Mexico.”

But in America, politicians have taken the temperature of the Hispanic voting bloc and consider not offending them to be more important than border security.

Another topic you won’t hear mentioned very much by the media.

Not a Partisan issue
Bush does deserve some credit for stockpiling Tamiflu as does Obama for increasing and distributing the stockpiles to afflicted areas.

The flu knows no politics and respects no boundries or people. It is an enemy to all of humanity.Let's hope this does not turn out to be as fatal as the 1918 pamdemic.

According to CNN and the Pew Environmental Center, the first case of this flu arose in Mexico in the vicinity of the Smithfield operated pig factory. Smithfield is one of the world's largest pork and ham producers and are not in compliance with standard health and safety regulations for their megafarms in Mexico.

Seeing photos of the lagoons of waste and the pigletts standing deep in their own excrement at the factory farms, its no surprise that this is a fly and flu breeding paradise.

Smithfield should be held accountable for this flu, and pay damages to victim's families who died from this outbreak. Human health must not be exchanged for corporate profit. Basic hygiene and cleanliness procedures are well known and an important safeguard to the prevention of illneses and diseases. If these unsanitary operations are allowed to continue, we must expect that new batches of flus and even superflus can emerge from the breeding grounds of factory farming.

The 1918 flu killed 50 million
worldwide and rivaled the dead in WW I.

Now, there was a flu you could write home about, if you survived.

What is so nuts about this outbreak, like the SARS of a few years ago and swine flu of 1976, is that it is not spreading like wildfire and killing 50% of the people with infections or actually causing any of the hype the news and gov't's have been predicting.

We live in a time of constant shouting where everything is delivered at 11 decibels: global warming, the seas rising, ice shelfs collapsing, anarchy in Afghanistan, yadda yadda.

The cry of *Wolf!* is so loud so long that most of what is worried over and fretted to death is not significant, never produces the catastrophe promised, and simply dulls the senses.

Medicine has advanced enormously since 1918 when people literally wore garlic around their necks to prevent contagion.

This flu did not come from Smithfield or the regulated meat industry.

These flus that develop in China and now MX come from people living with their farm animals, close enough to exchange bodily fluids in which viruses get a chance to mutate and cross species.

This is not an anaimal rights issue. It is a human hygiene and common sense issue.

Seems to me
from my personal experiences that U.S. security types (at least in the airports) are far more interested in hassling people whom they believe to be American soldiers. Every time I pass through an airport with my family, we get searched. Meanwhile, the Middle Eastern military-ages-males walk by without a second glance.

Lyme disease destroys thousands
and goes completely ignored. This swine flu thing is asinine.

Maybe...
One good crisis deserves another? (I know this is no laughing matter. Seriously, this thing didn't just invent itself!)

Speaking of Conspiracies..
Just google "Tamilfu vaccine tainted" to get another perspective.Nothing would surprise me these days!(I didn't choose the name ON THE EDGE for nothin'!) I certainly never expected to be sharing these far-fetched ideas with people I don't even know over a computer either, but here I am. I never thought our country would be taken over by Communism, which is akin to Satanism, but here it is,in plain sight. And for the moment,we're still allowed to publically express our opinions,so I can't resist! God bless Free Speech!

They were right...(part I)
To be concerned. The reason it has only killed 257 is because it is yet...so it seems...to spread from human to human. To get it you have to come in close contact with infected birds. But all it takes is the bird flu to infect a host (like a pig or a human) that also has good old fashion flu too and then the two viruses to exchange RNA enabling the bird flu now to easily be spread directly from human to human. The bird flu has a fatality rate between 60-80%, most people who get it die. If it becomes easily spread from human to human many millions will die and we aren't out of the woods in regards to this flu.

The Spanish Flu of 1918-1919 and killed 40-50 million people (more than died in WWI) and before the advent of air travel and thousands moving all about the planet on a daily basis. If Spanish Flu happened today it would kill many more than the 40-50 million. If bird flu becomes easily spread many many millions will die.

They were right...(part II)
It is believed the Spanish Flu began as an avian virus in ducks and chickens in Kansas and spread to pigs who were infected with a flu virus easily spread to humans, from there they exchanged RNA and you had a worldwide pandemic on your hands. We know the avian flu is mutating and so far luckily it has not acquired the ability to infect humans easily from human to human contact, but it may be just a matter of time before this happens.

The WHO and governments in Asia (such as Taiwan) are still very concerned about this virus. The media and others were right to be very concerned...then and now. H5N1 is still a dire threat to us all and the current Swine Virus also is a hybrid of pig, avian and human viruses. It wouldn't take much for it to infect pigs and then on to humans. If 30% of the population got H5N1 (which is the prediction if it was to go from human to human), as many as 1 billion people could die from it--health services would crumble under the pressure, economies and social order would crash, it would be a doomsday situation. Don't make light of the legitimate concern.

"What is so nuts about this outbreak, like the SARS of a few years ago..."

More than 700 people died of SARS and 8000 were infected. Go to places that were hard hit like Hong Kong and Taiwan and ask them if they think SARS was such a minor event.

Social Worker
Lyme disease kills less that 1% compared to 10% for SARS and 60-80% for H5N1. We don't yet know how fatal this H1N1 is, but it will be much higher than 1%. It like H5N1 is of serious concern and has already had a huge impact on the economy of Mexico and it has only been around for a month. Lyme disease pales in comparison to SARS or H5N1 or H1N1.

"These flus that develop in China and now MX come from people living with their farm animals, close enough to exchange bodily fluids in which viruses get a chance to mutate and cross species."

True just as the 1918 flu came from Kansas where people lived close to their animals (pigs, ducks, chickens) and not unlike rural China today or the semi-rural town I lived in in Taiwan (population 76,000) where chickens and ducks were kept in small cages on the edge of the street and when you went to buy chicken for dinner you bought them live and they killed them right in front of you).

SARS it seems came from the Civet Cat which is an exotic delicacy in Guangdong where almost everything that moves is eaten.

Shut up akagi
My God you are so full of nonsense its pathetic.

100 people died of the "swine flu" or said to have died of the swine flu and a million others died of everything from old age to automobile accidents and murder.

More people have died on the streets of American Cities by gang violence than die from this stupid flu.

Its bs, and it will be used to promote government health care.

Its another play directed on real people by the actors we all know better as politicians.

I believe it is complete bs

Alert!!!
Dangerous Hate Crime Legislation passed.
Dangerous Hate Crime Legislation passed.
Hate Crimes legislation has just passed in the House of Reps.

Hate Crimes legislation will be twisted and misinterpreted to mean anything.

The purpose of hate crimes legislation is to take away our freedoms. INcluding freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Hate Crimes legislation is intended to silence the pulpits around the country.

Do not let the Senate pass this legislation.

OBAMA has promised to sign it

Note to all:
Please don't respond to the trolls, it just encourages them. Trolls respond to articles and comments with personal attacks and Democratic lies (sometimes called talking points), usually in a juvenile, semi-literate fashion. Flag 'em and forget 'em.

When I think back...
on the millions of dollars and the hours of work WASTED on planning for the "bird flu pandemic" it makes me sick! The government required businesses to have written plans for the "bird flu" - which basically came down to figuring out how people could work from home. Big deal.

Now we have the swine flu - again. I remember all the hype on this back in 1976 - which "historians" now claim was all a political ploy by Gerald Ford in his re-election campaign. Oh, but this round IS NOT being used by Obama to usher in Socialized Medicine???

Maybe one reason so many people have died in Mexico is because THEY HAVE SOCIALIZED MEDICINE!!! Well, that and the fact that Mexico is basically a third world country. I mean, you can't even drink the water!

And people aren't DYING here in the U.S. Any more than people died back in 1976. I am so sick of "doctors" and "scientists" predicting that this "could" mutate and "up to 50% of the population" could get it. Well, up to 50% of the population "could" die in car accidents this year - should we ban cars? Can we ban Mexicans? Maybe we should quarantine anyone coming back from Spring Break in Mexico!

Give me a break!

Too many things happening
In the last 6 months that is from government interference in one thing or another.

When Rohm Emanuel, Hilliary Klinton both pointed out they intend to USE the PLANNED Crisis and instigated crisis by government, this "swine flu" FITS perfectly for trying to scare people into what they have been working to get forced on all of us for years.

National Health Care.
Today they are talking about this as an pandemic, and TOMORROW you can bet money they are going to tell us all how this proves we need national Health Care.

The Government is already taking over all private business and blaming Free Enterprise for what they themselves created by planned policy.

Whats more Janet Napilotano IGNORES islamic terrorists and POINTS HER BONY FINGER at Americans who do not think right.
The she REFUSES to close the Border!

They think we are all too stupid to see what they are doing.

We have madmen running the government, insane power hungry tyrants

Shutting down schools is good
But shutting down borders will not be good?

This is the sort of crap coming out of the power mad people in DC.

They are insane with the lust for power.

Do not allow yourself to fall into their manipulated fear mongering.
This flu scare is part of the plan to force National Health Care and they have already told us so.

This WH is USING this for policy that has been in planning, National Health Care.
Watch and see.

Obama says he is 'PLEASED' about the 'PROGRESS" he has made in the last 100 days.

What progress has he made?
He has used the power of government to TAKE over private business and INCORPORATE all powers under his crooked little hands.

This man is crazy as they come, and he is being praised as brilliant.

He is a bonafide blue ribbon idiot, a total fraud and liar.

Threat
How would this country react and respond to a REAL threat? “Land of the free and home of the brave”…what a laugher. For the government (forget the MSM) and Americans not to view this issue pragmatically and in appropriate balance is foolishness on a monumental scale and is costing us dearly.

TS
I wonder how many people died of the Spanish Flu in its first few weeks and days. We do not know how bad this flu will be...it might be like the Swine Flu in 1976 or it may be like the Spanish Flu in 1918 or it may be like H1N1 and kill 80% of those it infects and infects 30% of the world's population and 1 billion people are dead.

Concern...not panic...but concern is justified.

Akagi
Since when has the flu not ever been a concern?

Its always a concern, but it is not worthy to use for politics.

This is what is happening from the fraud in the WH

Hundreds and thousands
Of people in Mexico are gunned down in the streets and it is not given the attention a few deaths from the flu.

If its about saving lives, then the worst of all is traffic and crime deaths.

More people die on the streets of Washington DC than die in Baghdad.

People are dying right now all over this globe, death is more sure than taxes.

Everyone is concerned about all the dangers in this world that cause timely or untimely death.

But it is only crazy people mad with power to use the flu for politics as will be done with this present circumstance.

WATCH AND SEE

This flu is being used
Its a "crisis" that will not go to waste by the demented power crazy people in Washington DC, and the world.

This is manipulation by governments to fear monger, to sound reasonable when they promote National Health Care.

Hilliary Klinton and Rohm Emanuel have already told us they will not allow any "crisis" to go UN-USED

Janet (Reno) Napilotano
Was Governor of Arizona, not because she was so smart or wise and loved Arizona and its citizens.

No, she was selected by the "progressives" and given tons of money to run her campaign of the political system that is fixed today by those who have the money to fix them.

Laying that aside and not worth time to debate, lets look at Janet herself.

When a genuine crisis came to her State of Arizona, she gave it lip service.

Hundreds died of the millions of citizens of a Foreign Government were invading America from the south, she called it a State Emergency herself, and then acted like it was not worthy of any effort to stop.

But she was between a rock and a hard place, and her politics of globalism led her through the Very Real Crisis.
An Invasion by citizens of other nations is exactly what she was hired to stop to protect the citizens of Arizona.
Who were also dying by gangs and drug wars all over the Southern Border.

And her deeds to stop all this murderous crime looked more like a treatment for a serious traffic accident.

Now this woman backs Mexico's struggle against this new "crisis" more than she backed her own citizens in Arizona in protecting them leaving the Border WIDE OPEN.

But she will not tell Mexico its no use to close down their schools, their public transportation etc. but she WILL keep to her politics of globalism to SAY..closing the border will not do any good.

Why is it good to close schools down and not the BORDER?

She is so much a political hack and tool she has gone insane just like the idiot in the WH has, and all of his followers.

Common sense has left the Building.
The WH, The Congress and the Senate.

We have genuine lying idiots running this country today

Just now heard
On the radio that San Antonio Texas has closed its schools.

Closing schools is good.
However, closing the border in "unhelpful".

How do you like being lied to so blatantly America?

Do you not know the mind and personality of intentional liars?

This is what we have in Washington DC today.

A liar has no respect for the person they lie to, and see you are stupid when you believe their lies.

This WH team is showing America how much they despise this countries laws and Constitution.

And anyone today who want Law and Order with Equality of Equal Protection of the Law has been listed as an extremist by Janet Napilotano.

All who support this WH and its army of trained socialists are full of the hate and danger they say is from others.

They are led by hate, it is their inspirational spirit, their guiding "light".

They worship each other like all are Priests and Lords.

Fawning words of praise for the moron in chief, a truly crazy man that has given himself over to the insanity of madness.

A madness that comes from a curse by the lust for power over others.

This Administration is seeking one thing, the control over all business and government to install a monopoly of power.

These are not empty words:

"Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely"

These people in the WH and his sheep, are DRIVEN by AMBITION FOR POWER.

Ambition is like any other emotion, it can be used for good or for evil, but when a Government becomes AMBITIOUS, it is the most dangerous force known to mankind.
And this is exactly what we have right now today in Washington DC

Obsessed with 'Better safe than sorry"

32,000 deaths is the average number of Americans that die during an ordinary flu season. And we're wringing our hands and cowering in the corner over this??

This country has gone from the land of the free and the home of the brave to the land obsessed with the notion of 'better safe than sorry'.

I'd rather live an exciting, abundant, fulfilled life without fear and die of something other than old age than tip toe through life.

We've turned into a nation of people taught and raised by females in a feminized, bow down to the altar of 'better safe than sorry' culture.

I'm glad that the people who crossed this country in covered wagons 170 yrs. ago didn't have our mindset that we have today. Missouri would still be on the edge of the Frontier!

Has it ever occurred to anyone else that maybe better safe than sorry isn't all that it's cracked up to be???

America, stop gazing down at your navels and GROW A PAIR!

Hey, Dan
This flu has already been explained by a deep thinking TH poster: Obama started it so he could get Sibelius approved.

Good going, guys.
