Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

It's a good thing Larry Whitten isn't in charge of the editorial page of this publication; otherwise, I might be forced to write under the name Pretty Keys -- which is how Linda Chavez roughly translates from (old) Spanish to English. Mr. Whitten is the owner of a Taos, N.M., hotel who decided one way to promote business in his new enterprise was to make hotel employees Anglicize their Spanish names. The story hit the newswires this week when angry former employees and their families set up picket lines across the street from the hotel.

Arguing with Idiots By Glenn Beck

Predictably, charges of racism ensued, followed by countercharges that Hispanics simply refuse to assimilate. In fact, Whitten may have had a right to do what he did -- so long as he'd make the same requirements of an employee named, say, Hermione or Ethelrod. But just because you have a legal right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

My parents weren't thinking of passing on any ethnic heritage when they named me Linda. It was simply the most popular girl's name in 1947 and ranked in the top 10 from 1940-1965. But the popularity of babies' names does sometimes reflect changing demographics. In 1998, José moved to the top of the list of most common boys' names for the state of California, for example. But names also reflect a changing culture and the acceptance of what might, at one time, have seemed foreign.

In 2009, names like Aiden and Liam were among the most popular boys' names in the United States, as were Isabella, Chloe, and Sophia among girls. At an earlier point in American history, those names might have raised eyebrows, but not today. And the parents giving their babies those names may well be the descendants of Irish, Spanish, and Greek immigrants who didn't feel free to do the same for their own offspring.

A hundred years ago, it was not uncommon for immigrants to want their children to be recognizably American by giving them names more common in the U.S. than in the country of their ancestors. Antonio became Anthony and Giuseppe, Joseph. And sometimes the change took place in school, not on the birth certificate, and the choice was the child's, not the parents. Nor was it just immigrants who made the decision. My father, Rudy, whose family had lived in New Mexico for nearly 400 years, always gave his full name as Rudolph Frank Chavez. But his birth certificate clearly reads Rodolfo Enrique -- which means Henry, not Frank as he apparently preferred.

We've become a very tolerant society, in which we don't judge people by their names any more than by the color of their skin. Assimilation still requires some accommodation by the newcomers -- learning English, first and foremost -- as it should. But it doesn't mean entirely giving up some attachment and affection for one's origins, even distant ones.

It's one thing for an employer to insist his staff speak English on the job (which Whitten did as well) and quite another for him to require a Marcos to become Mark or tell a Martìn (Mahr-TEEN) to pronounce his name with the accent on the first syllable or else. The former represents an obvious business advantage; it allows customers to understand what is being said in their presence and supervisors to know that employees are not being insubordinate. But the latter just seems insulting, to both employees and customers, who are presumed be too bigoted to accept Spanish names.

And the irony couldn't be more acute, given the venue. Whitten's hotel is located on Paseo del Pueblo in Taos at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I suppose if Whitten had his way, he'd Anglicize all those names as well -- though no doubt the separation-of-church-and-state fanatics would have a field day if New Mexico chose the Blood of Christ as the new name for its spectacular mountain range.

Whitten has a record of turning around distressed hotel properties in several states, so he must be a savvy businessman. But in the state of New Mexico - -where Chavezes outnumber Whittens or Smiths, for that matter, and have been there a lot longer -- he'd be wise to turn around his attitude if he hopes to make money.

What's in a name?
What's in a name? Linda Chavez queried as a response to -now infamous, Whitten Inn owner Larry Whitten quest to force his employees in Taos, New Mexico, to leave behind their Latin, Hispanic, Mexican, or native heritage, and anglicize their names.
According to Whitten, his employees should change their names because for tourists is easier to understand words that sound "English". Too bad for the Archuletas, Martinez, Montoyas, and Tafoyas that have inhabited New Mexico for the past 400 years (way before anybody spoke English around there).

Bigotry is never good. It doesn't matter if one tries to disguise it as a marketing tool to revamp and boost a newly acquired business. These employees were not undocumented or illegal aliens, they happen to be U.S. Citizens.

As a former resident of Taos, I can say, I took pride of the diversity of the place. Taos is a wonderful land where different cultures converge. As a tourist town, its economy heavily relies on people from around the world (not only English speakers). Will Mr. Whitten oblige his patrons to speak English when booking a room at his Inn?

I could go on and on, on the topic, but I rather listen another track of my favorite singer July Churches, formerly known as Julio Iglesias.

Larry Whitten is a liar
Mr. Larry Whitten allegedly has been in the Marines. There is a question of that now because people in the world over who are in the Marines are never asked to change their name, either first or last names. With this as his own background of experience, how and where is Larry saying that people can't say names suddenly? Not in the American Military. Larry suddenly has jumped from his past work experience of the his largest employer, the American government, and says that he has had been in an America that isn't aware of Spanish words, Spanish names, or Spanish anything. Can a man claim to be more stupid than this and try and knave his way out of the hole he's dug for himself? Bigotry is based on lies, and when those lies become so clear as in this case that even the government is going to take a role in your affairs then I think that says it all. Larry is like what is typical of too many others that surround him and are loyal to his brand of hate. Like a pack of wolfs seeing their pack leader snared while on the hunt to bring his style of bigotry to another region, the co-horts shout and say unbelievable bigotry and hate at the people who are critical of what Larry Whitten has done to himself.

Larry Whitten is a liar
Has Larry Whitten ever heard of, seen, or read the novel or movie ROOTS, a novel by Alex Haley? Kunta Kinte is a small 10 or 11 year old African boy named by his parents on the African continent in American Slavery time. Kunta is one day captured and sold in to slavery here in the USA where he is put to the whip by a slave driver who nearly beats the young boy to death unless he submits right then and there to accept and say his new name Tobby. Sadly, before he passes out from the many lashes the slave driver has given Kunta Kinte, the boy cries out the the name the slave driver wants him to go by, Tobby, an acceptable Anglicized name for a slave in the South. I'd like to know if Larry were employing an African with a name like Kunta Kinte would he Anglicize his employees name to Tobby, or any other name he feels more Angllcized than Kunta Kinte? Would Larry Whitten consider changing President Barack Obama's name? His name changing actions are so egregious that I shall be at his trial.

"Spare us the artful attempts to embrace diversity, Linda! No gracias!"

I've noticed that those who encourage "embracing of diversity" oft seem to use Canada's officious-multiculturalism policy (and more recently Britain's, a carbon-copy of Canada's), an absolute disaster, as the model.

a funny thing about Linda...
I have been blasted here by Linda's defenders who suggest that she is an enlightened conservative about ILLEGAL aliens... I see her simply as a quisling open border vamp profiting from hiring ILLEGALS just like Nancy Pelosi, and shrugging off the myriad devastating social pathologies which go with ILLEGALS like white on rice-- crimes, gangs, drugs, barrio blight, illegitimacy's, dropouts, bilingual dysfunction, and willful cultural disparateness.

But Linda's occasional apologists NEVER really counter the points I make in my post just below about the two boards she serves on of companies shamelessly breaking our laws in willfully hiring ignorant ILLEGAL aliens. Again, such miscreant corporate users profit while taxpayers and citizens get hosed and milked.

One needs read only a few columns in her archive to see that Linda would have us thank the ILLEGAL aliens for the net good they do us... why then these pernicious effects per the highly respected Heritage Foundation:

Oh, those inconvenient facts and truths, Linda!

actually, Linda makes $ on ILLEGALS

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Inconvenient truths about Linda Chavez profiting from ILLEGAL aliens...

Linda Chavez is a director of the largest chicken producer in America, Pilgrim's Pride Corp.-- which is now in bankruptcy:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27999537/

Care to guess whether Pilgrim's Pride has hired and profited from (or at least hoped to profit from) ILLEGAL aliens-- at taxpayer and citizen expense?!

The more one learns about Linda, the more her pro-ILLEGAL alien posture causes stomach turning.

From the cited article:
Pilgrim’s Pride controls about 23 percent of the U.S. market, and is a large chicken producer in Mexico. It has 48,000 employees and operates 35 chicken processing plants and 11 prepared-foods facilities

Here is the janitorial services co. on whose Board Linda Chavez also serves... they willfully hire ILLEGAL aliens... that would seem to compromise any semblance of journalistic integrity when she does not mention this when braying here about the benefits of these fine, upstanding ILLEGALS, "just doing jobs Americans won't do."

http://www.abm.com/Services/janitorial/Pages/Janitorial-Ser vices.aspx

Spare us the artful attempts to embrace diversity, Linda! No gracias!

If that is true
DontBRude

I agree then, he done nothing wrong.

I should have known to dig deeper for details Linda Chavez is known for leaving out when it comes to her beloved Mexico or Mexicans.

She never talks about the law concerning immigration through Mexico.

Ms. Chavez does not have the facts
Mr. Whitten was not asking employees to change their names. What Mr. Whitten was asking for was to "anglacize" their names by taking out the accent, ie Mar(roll of the R)teen
to Martin while the employees were on the phones booking reservations in order to make it easier for the customer to understand on the phone. This was not an unreasonable request in running a business and had NOTHING to do with prejudice or ethnicity. It had everything to do with hearing acuity on the phone. Has anyone ever tried to run through a very difficult technical question on the phone with someone with a thick accent? I have had to actually had to call back so I could get a different person because I couldn't understand someone's accent and I am actually pretty good with accents. To turn this into anything other than a business request is ridiculous!

thanx for the kind words-- I try

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning last November's Presidential election:

* Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29

* Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000

* Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million

* Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years!

If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message.

If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

Another tidbit
Many Indians (myself included) "unofficially Anglicise" their names by shortening them as nick-names (common examples: "Krishnamurthy" or "Sivaramakrishnan" become "Kris"; "Chandrashekhar" becomes "Chandy"; "Chakradhar" becomes "Chuck"; "Srinivas" becomes "Sri" or "Srini"...).

Some other immigrants (heavy percentage of them Muslims) officially Anglicise at naturalisation (when it can be done as packet-deal, without additional fees) as Pakistani Islamist Daoud Gilani (recently arrested LeT sleeper of Chicago) did becoming "David Coleman Headley". (admittedly, this does involve some more headaches such to change name on Social Security, Driver's Licence, and all plastic-moneys--and headaches will be multiplied if the newly-naturalised is also dual-citizen of another country....).

Really?
I thought Hillary and Bill went to a "Pass, Fail"
institution.

"Much Ado about Nothing?"
When my Wife of 40 years was *Naturalized* in Florida many years ago, she was offered the option of Anglicizing her given names..She was very quick in asserting "the names my Mother gave me will be on my Grave Marker".

The Elderly Lady next door, however, insisted on calling her *Sue* and that's the way it's been since then.. Her SS $$ goes to the bank in the name her Mom gave her..Wish the Name deal was the biggest hurdle we've had to overcome!!

Do you have a solid source for the data about Obama's underwhelming academic creds?

Frankly, I have wondered why he never published such data, whereas Dubya, the Windsurfer Cohen-Kerry (real surname was Cohen), Shrillary, AlGore and others all have.

I can remember in 1994
working in an office (dominated by Philipinos with smaller number of African-Americans, and one Burmese lady) with a Chennai-born Tamil colleague (initially we were contractors--I got absorbed due to being on TN-1, while the HR lady would not absorb my colleague who was on H1-b due to that). A few times when I spoke to him in Tamil, he warned me to do so only in private, as our then-boss (also Tamil, but Mumbai-born) feared complaints by his clients (irony: the Philipinos in the office oft spoke openly in Tagalog).

Due to having lived in Canada, I believe US should for immigration purposes favour those who display fluency in English as Canada does for those who speak EITHER of its two official languages--and that those planning to immigrate to (or even work temporarily in) US should take the pains to learn English.

OBAMA'S & THEIR ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS
THOUGH YOU MAY BE SHOCKED TO LEARN

Barack achieved but a 2.7 GPA in high school (SAT's = 1027) followed by a 2.6GPA at Columbia and after (somehow) getting into Harvard, then affirmatively achieved little in their Law School.

Michelle did even worse on all counts...

Both are at near the level of Michael Moore...

All three are major con-artists who have conned America for years...

Linda is Right
Employees DO need to speak English, so that the customers can understand and conduct business. If immigrants come here, they DO need to learn English to survive and to become a part of our society. However, asking them to Anglicize their names at their place of employmet is too much. Sure, its the owner's business, yet employees deserve to keep their dignity. I know I would be pi$$ed off if my employer didn't like my name and wanted me to change it. Your name is the central core to who you are. Someone asking you to change your very identity is insulting and very unecessary.

Linda you missed the point
If you worked for the guy, you could still be Linda. He didn't ask them to translate their names, dear. Just to anglicize them.

You should refer to what CNN reporter Rick Sanchez said when HE was asked about this, and take a page out of his book.

If an employer (apparently successful for 40 years) wants Robert instead of Roberto on his answering desk, he has that right.
If I were him, maybe I'd consider not hiring these folks anymore. He has that right too.

Quite right
Mr. Whitten is being silly. His former employees are doing a good thing in picketing to highlight the silliness. Peopl who agree Whitten's behavior is insulting and stupid probably will refrain from patronizing his establishment.

That is the way things should work in a free society, invidous discrimination by government prohibited, private business people and their employees left alone either to contract or to refrain from contracting with one another, with the government keeping its nose out of these mutually consensual private relationships and transactions.

AMERICA LAYS A GOLDEN EGG (FERGUSON)

For those wanting to review a thorough analysis of America's recent financial meltdown and its causes... read AMERICA LAYS A GOLDEN EGG written a few months ago by Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson. Go to Harvard's website and look up his name.

Professor Ferguson has written many papers over the past months and years which are cataloged on his website. They are on a broad range of social, economic and world subjects.

I encourage everyone blogging on TH to first read Ferguson's learned papers before making a fool of themselves.

Professor Ferguson teaches history and also economics at the Harvard Business School. His views are well researched.

Another professor (this time of Yale) whose writings are also well worth reading are those of AMY CHUA. She recently wrote on the subject of America being an Ultra-Power... that is fading fast.

Heres what we do know.

This is just another issue liberals use to divide us.

One thing he gains
From this
Now he and his hotels are known across the US.

Its free advertising too.

I used to live 30 miles above Taos up in the mountains and know the town well enough to understand the reaction to his silly demand.

That area was settled by such people as
Mahr-TEEN.

I lived on an what had been formerly the Pickaree Apache Reservation, still there but reduced in size.

Its an extremely sensitive to its Mexican and Indian culture, and there are some really dangerous people who live there is you have white skin.

Just stating the facts, although most are extremely gentile and kind to anyone, he best watch his back.

There was a time when I lived down there, I had to be armed, on occasion, not always.

I know he has made some enemies all through that area from Santa Fe to Taos, let alone the racists of La Raza etc. , by appearing racist himself with this ignorant move

Excellent--
Oracle 1 always pens good posts that are right on the money. We see everything he is writing about right here in this area. These illegals expect everything and offer nothing. It is our librat politicians that pander to them, i.e. sanctuary cities, food stamps, free ed. meds. etc. When my wife and are out in a store and some of them are around speaking loudly in spanish, we (my wife and I are of Skandinavian and Russian background, and we speak a little of our grandparents languages) are tired of hearing the loud illegals, so we start loudly speaking in Russian or Norsk. The illegals that hear us become very quiet and almost scared. However, I had one ask me once why I speak like that, and I loudly told him that it was our culture. He shut the he** up.
Maybe the next time some legal citizen is ill, he or she should go to the ER and demand the same deals that the illegals receive. HMMMMM

WHO
CARES

Anglicizing Names or Vice Versa
Some time ago I was in a Spanish immersion class required by my employer and the "enlightened" instructor insisted on addressing students, where possible, in the Spanish form of their name, in my case Juan. She was somewhat bewildered when, after addressing me half a dozen times, I still had not responded. She then addressed me as Senor and my last name and I responded appropriately. When asked why I had not answered I told her frankly, I was named after my grandfather, and his name was John.

It is stupid to insist on altering another persons name for any external reason. A person may choose to change how he is addressed in general or, perhaps his name is too difficult for people of other cultures to pronounce acceptably, and he provides them with an acceptable alternative. In either case, it's his decision to make. As for speaking English in a U.S. workplace, the requirement does have all the benefits to the employer as mentioned plus the fact that increased proficiency in English pays dividends to the employee in increased economic and educational opportunities.

Idiotic if not illegal
I don't know if it's illegal for an employer to tell his employees to change their names for their time at work, but the guys an outright idiot for doing it. That's the way to improve employee morale ---try to make them surrender their identity.

re:

the ILLEGAL alien health care shell game

(slight edit of a recent post)

Dr. Y

The Left's healthcare bills only exclude PAYMENT for ILLEGAL aliens!!

The bills state money will not be spent on health care for ILLEGAL aliens. That's how they already get their free health care today-- ER's are required by federal law to treat ILLEGALS, BUT there is no means for these ER's to get paid.

The same type of Catch-22 will be included in ObamaCare-- the requirement to treat people, without getting paid for the treatments. That way they can pretend to satisfy both sides BEFORE the bill is approved.

In the end, they have every intention of finding someone else to pay for health care for ILLEGALS (probably out of those evil profits some hospitals make), without any attempt to reduce the number of ILLEGALS streaming into this country.

Yet another shell game scam perpetrated on the backs of the producers.

inconvenient truths about ILLEGALS

The simple truth is that whether people are poor and ignorant natives, or arrive here poor and ignorant, they become net takers. It has little to do directly with ethnicity, although Hispanics are especially prone not to escape meager beginnings.

Each poor and uneducated family will use $1.4 million in guvment services beyond what it EVER pays in any form of taxes for those services over a lifetime per Heritage:

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/bg1936.cfm
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/SR14es.cfm

Ergo, poor ILLEGALS are automatically huge net takers when they arrive, made worse still by the language issue.

There is also empirical and inferential evidence that ILLEGAL aliens are NOT rapidly learning English as their legal Hispanic predecessors did, partly because the PC ilk thinks that bilingualism and multiculturalism are just OK.

Among all immigrants, ONLY Hispanics trail the native born even by the third generation in soci0-economic achievements.

Furthermore, the fertility rates of the poor and uneducated are very high, snowballing their concomitant pathologies.

Finally, the social pathologies among Hispanic ILLEGALS are horrendous-- crimes, gangs, illegitimacy's, drugs, barrio blight, school decimation and dropouts, diseases and health maintenance habits.

You are not the only one who has passed along that message. Many Latino groups openly promote the same message.

And you're right. Latinos do think Liberals are dumb for the hand-outs and freebies, but are willing to exploit them as it furthers their goal of retaking the southwest.

From a philosophical point of view, it has been unrealistic for anyone to believe the United States, as we know it, would last forever. We are now over 200 year old. We have had a good run. Much to be proud of... some we preferred never happened. No nation on Earth has ever accomplished so much and done so much good for humanity as the United States.

However, we are living in a time when we will witness the beginnings of the decline of the United States.

We are no longer a nation of laws, no longer a nation of equal justice under the law. As such our confidence and support of this form of government will now begin its decline. At some point in the future, we will look and say this government does not deserve to survive.

This is the path on which Liberals have taken us.

America is different today

Today's immigrants (legal and ILLEGAL) are similar to those of a century ago, but they are coming to a very different America, one where changes in the economy, society, and government create fundamentally different incentives for newcomers. In other words, the America that some of our grandparents came to no longer exists. This simple fact must become the starting point for the explosive debate about immigration policy.

Although mass immigration once served our national interests, in today's America it weakens our common national identity, limits opportunities for upward mobility, threatens our security and sovereignty, strains resources for social programs, and disrupts middle-class norms of behavior. ILLEGALS particularly pervade pernicious social pathologies like a cancer.

So as the politicians argue about border fences and amnesty, they are missing the bigger picture: the harmful impact of large-scale settlement of all kinds of immigrants, whether legal or illegal, skilled or unskilled, temporary or permanent, European or Latin or Asian or African.

Modern America has simply outgrown wholesale immigration, and we must limit it before it cripples us, and carefully monitor the changes it forces.

The Conspiracy of Evil

The biggest challenge to stopping ILLEGAL aliens is that the money and organization (hence power) is mainly on the pro-ILLEGAL side. The pro-ILLEGAL forces include an unlikely, strange bedfellow alliance between groups which want to USE them in different ways--> the Conspiracy Of Evil.

Miscreant employers obviously simply want to exploit their labor-- never mind the myriad, egregious socio-economic problems they foist on America... hence, their all-in costs to society are immense and snowballing. Furthermore, the "savings" to miscreant employers are pocketed by them --> your hotel room or head of lettuce is NO cheaper to YOU.

The PC left wants to get ILLEGALS voting and seize permanent control for leftist "elites" via yet more inexorable big entitlement government... power flows to statist 'Crats/the left when YOUR tax $ flows to Washington. Try to find a liberal who does not really favor scamnesty, while feigning talk about enforcement first.

The scandal-plagued Catholic Church needs replacement bodies for the pews; and ILLEGALS can put more in the collection plates in America than in Mexico... the Church still has mega-millions to pay out for priest perversion (after deciding to forgive each priest one act of perversion-- Jesus!):

http://articles.latimes.com/2007/jul/15/local/me-priests15

Ethnocentric Hispanic groups really do want an effective Reconquista, so they hide behind claims of racism and pleas for PC multiculturalism and one world, NWO kumbaya.

http://www.libertygunrights.com/NAUFactSheet.pdf

Finally, the remote elites, including the liberal MSM, do not see what all the fuss is about. Besides, they LIKE their cheap ILLEGAL maids and yard-workers, and THEIR children will not have to go to schools enervated by "those people."

ILLEGAL Immigration= Discrimination

All three of my adult children are in the construction business. They are in danger of losing their jobs to lower paid ILLEGALS. You see the ILLEGALS are not on the books; therefore, the employer does not have to do payroll taxes or provide workman's comp insurance.

In my community a good number of businesses will hire only ILLEGAL aliens, and they will tell you that up front. I have one relative WHO when they found out he was only half Mexican and born in the U.S. they fired him summarily.

Now we have the statists want to accommodate Hispanic culture by not requiring English. This will also keep them dependent on the system and their ILLEGAL alien support groups.

(comment: support groups include welfare services after they push out anchor babies, churches, ACORN, LULAC and La Raza, etc.)

My Spanish-speaking co-workers
who pronounce their names like they're back in
what my grandparents called the "old country" (but they call "my country") do not pronounce our Russian-born co-worker's names with Russian accents, our Greek-born co-worker's names with Greek accents, our Indian-born etc., etc. But they do sneer at people who don't understand which co-worker they mean when they talk about "Hay-Soos".

And I have never had my name pronounced American-style in a non-English speaking country. Never thought to complain about it either.

*Why immigrants have become unwelcome *

... by Rosemary LaBonte.

In 1900 European immigrants flooded into the US. They stood in long lines at Ellis Island to be documented. They pledged to uphold the laws and support their new country. They made learning English and securing employment a
priority. Some even changed names to better assimilate.

They said good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and helped them assimilate. Nothing was handed to them: No free lunches, no welfare, and no labor laws to protect them. All they had were their skills to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age during World War II. My father fought with men whose parents were immigrants. None of these 1st generation Americans cared where their parents came from. They were defending America as one people.

When we liberated France, no one there looked for the French, German or Irish-American. The French saw only AMERICANS. We carried one flag, representing one country.

None of those immigrant sons waved another country's flag to show their identity. It would have disgraced their parents who sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants knew what it meant to be
an AMERICAN.

Now we have a new kind of immigrant wanting the same rights and privileges, BUT with different rules which include entitlement and foreign allegiances. That's not what being an American is about. Many don't bother with rules and enter ILLEGALLY.

Immigrants of the early 1900's deserve better for all the hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those Legally searching for a better life and willing to assimilate. They would be appalled that they are being used as examples by those waving foreign flags.

At least, they are Christian, and are from the same Continent!-- I Know,-- we have a bunch of Brazilians, Argentinians, Peruvians, etc, but They are not usually Problematic, the Columbians and Venezuelans, are Another Matter!!

The problem with the Hispanics, is that when they are faced with Embracing Islam. or Dying, they Embrace it. [Historically, they did.] I, "Gentle Readers", dealt with Hispanic and Islamic Youth, in a Correctional setting for 16+ years, so I KNOW-- What and How--, They Think. Sooo---, NO Help there, with the Islamic Invasion!

I think the New World Order Govt. of B.H. Obama is dying to water down the population of the U.S., with Illegals of ANY type and make it Easier to Control!! Those people are used to Govt. Oppression. There is a plan, Folks, as Roosevelt, another leftist said--"Nothing in politics happens by Accident."

Invasion
Immigration, THE LEGAL KIND, can have some long-term positive effects if carefully managed with quotas for specialized skills and careful background checks of each and every individual, including the "chain migration" problem.

ILLEGAL immigration is almost totally negative and detrimental for all the reasons that opponents have rightly detailed. The self-satisfied and insulated intellectuals in the "think tanks" around the Nation often try to inject spin like "we need more people to replace our declining population". Balderdash!

Without eliminating special quotas, we need to actually down-size our population while making every individual more productive by education and training and through innovation and technology. An interdependent world economy is NOT a good idea if it means we are sacrificing our independence to maintain the values of our Constitution which is grounded not only on noble principles but also on our ability to sustain ourselves regardless of the insanity outside our borders.

This is not how we are postured at this time. China “could eat our lunch” at any time. The Islamic threat is real and must be countered. Our borders MUST BE SECURED and ILLEGAL ALIEN immigration stopped dead in its tracks, NOW!

Rick Sanchez' comments
were interesting: Americanizing a name is generally helpful to someone wishing to work in the U. S.

I notice Linda doesn't call herself "Leendah Chah-vayth"

African-American school kids harass their brothers and sisters who "talk white," or who, by making good grades, "act white;" and yet it's usually those who make a better way for themselves in this white-talk-understanding business world that prefers smart to dumb employees.

Suggesting a name change would be preferable to demanding it, but as our new Administration would say, "It's for your own good. We know best."

Racism

Isn't it ironic how the main stream media(msm) sees race and ethnicity as several giant voting blocks? Blacks voted overwhelmingly for a black presidential candidate(over 95%), but of course race played no part in their voting patterns. Yeah, right!

Now they tell us Latinos will vote as a block for liberals, putting aside their Catholic faith's opposition to abortion, homosexual activism, and other social conservative issues. Why? Because they were offended at conservative opposition to Sotomayor.

For the main stream media(msm), the only race that seems capable of voting along political ideological lines seems to be the white vote, divided between liberal and conservative. And now, the main stream media is busy labeling the white voters that oppose liberal policy, not as ideological opposition to liberalism, but as (you guessed it) angry white racists.

Now I am not suggesting for a moment that whites should vote along racial lines. What I am saying is from this American's point of view, it seems the msm's failure to address the fact that blacks and Latinos voting patterns are following racial/ethnic lines and not political ideology, suggests that it is in collusion with the liberal political wing of this country and they are being played for fools and pawns by divisive racial political hustlers.

In the long run, these liberal social engineering policies and racial politics will fail not only blacks and Latinos but all Americans as well. I only hope it is not too late before my black and Latino brothers and sisters see through the msm and liberal political strategies and join with the social conservatives to restore America to the promise and greatness it once held.

Is it any wonder I am angry?!

Europe
Europe must be full of bigots, then. They never once even attempted to pronounce my very simple first (or even last) name according to the American pronunciation. They pronounced it the way the name is used in their own country.

but what is also true...
re:
"What cannot be overemphasized is that an obsession with form over substance, as seems to be the norm of late, especially in the age of Obama, produces unintended consequences. One of them is a de facto appearance of bigotry."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

...is that it need NOT be racism or bigotry to expect, indeed demand, that people emigrate to America LEGALLY and then follow our other laws as well.

Most other advanced countries (N.Z., Canada, Australia-- even Mexico!) think that we are CRAZY for tolerating ILLEGAL aliens. Canada demands that new arrivals be able to contribute positively by bringing education and skill sets with them. N.Z. and others expect assets/financial wherewithal also.

Any nation which fails to defend its borders, its culture, and its sovereignty will soon cease to be a nation. Many in Europe now PROFOUNDLY regret having imported Islamics to do their mean labor tasks for them... parts of Europe will soon be majority Islamic, and they are inimical toward their native hosts.

South of the Border
I have traveled extensively in Spanish-speaking countries and have many friends there. They all call me Roberto. Not one of them calls me by my English name. And they do it immediately, without asking, and assuming I'll be honored by the Spanish appellation. Doesn't bother me a bit.

This isn't about racism or disrespect. It's about the custom of most countries in the world. It's certainly the custom in every Hispanic country. Odd, isn't it, that what is always done in Mexico or Cuba is suddenly racist if the same thing is done in the United States?

Michigander: NOT 'Off the Subject'
It is a matter of good business practice. You leave a voice menu to communicate. If your assessment is a good portion of your market communicates better in Spanish, and it does not break the store to put the Spanish version of your message, then it is a good investment to cater to that segment of your market.

Profit, after all, is the motive of going into business.

a recent post about assimilation
(about specious Mexican claims to the American Southwest-- and assimilation)

sparcboy

Location: TX

A little history-- Mexico offered whites land grants if they would move into what is now Texas. Not to be nice, but so they could be fodder for arrows, spears and tomahawks of the Indians making raids into what is now Northern Mexico. These whites were then Mexican citizens. Mexico changed it's constitution which started a civil war that became a war of succession creating the nation of Texas.

Texas was annexed by the U.S. Mexico started a war with the U.S. over the disputed border and ended up losing what is now the Southwest U.S. Go read a lot of history books and you will learn that when you start a war and end up losing, you don't get say where the new borders will be.

Also, this isn't about race...it's about culture. American culture isn't perfect, but it's order's of magnitude better than the politically corrupt, drug-lord infested culture of Mexico and most other primarily Hispanic dominated countries. ILLEGALS from Mexico are coming in such great numbers, they're creating an almost entirely separate culture within the U.S.

Assimilation Overkill Begets Bigotry
Roughly a quarter of a century ago, when the manager hired me to a much coveted job in the lowest echelons of management in a reputable corporation, I believed it was on the merits of my resume and real time presentation. It was the easiest conclusion to make, having been endowed with a healthy dose of self-esteem by my farm boy upbringing, and a series of scholarships thru college.
Then picking an “Americanized” name was one of the top three issues he addressed in the job orientation. He opined that most people would find saying all three syllables of my first name, Constancio, as a project by itself, or in his words, “more than a mouthful.”
I was utterly flabbergasted. Only the fact that I already resigned from my previous job, where I was affectionately called “Mr. C” by my manager, constrained me from kissing the new job goodbye.
Again my farm boy instinct for adaptation kicked in and I settled for a compromise. During the first few years on the job I adopted the moniker “C.S.” This was conveniently consistent with the name on my driver’s license and the American Express card I carried at the time.

I did not bring this up to suggest that the manager was a bigot by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, he was one of the finest human beings I was privileged to have encountered in my career meanderings.

What cannot be overemphasized is that an obsession with form over substance, as seems to be the norm of late, especially in the age of Obama, produces unintended consequences. One of them is a de facto appearance of bigotry.

Slightly off the subject,
but has anyone on here ever been given an adequate explanation as to why we have to contend with the "press 2 for Spanish" preamble whenever we make a commercial call? Is it a law, or simply businesses covering their a$$ with the PC police?

SOMETIMES SPANISH IS BETTER
Some foreign words or phrases are more meaningful when used instead of English. One example is "deja vu". Another example is a toast to our legialative body in D.C. expressed as "Coca Cola, Congress". It would be much more meaningful, truthful and reflect the feelings of most Americans if the toast was adapted to Spanish and shouted as "Coma Caca, Congress".

Over the Top, but, ...
The name change stuff was over the top, but Mr. Whitten has the right to run his business as he sees fit and those who don't agree with him have the right to seek more congenial employment.

I would suspect that in his previous experience he's found that its damaging to have a perception that he hires illegals and that Americanized names and a strict English-only rule create the perception among his customers that his employees are all citizens.

Many people do, and more people should, refuse to patronize businesses that hire illegal alien job and identity thieves.

Perhaps he should have better educated himself about local history and culture, but I have a question to ask about that, ...

If these employees with the heavily ethnic names REALLY ARE legal citizens with hundreds of years of family history as US citizens then what are they doing speaking Spanish as their primary language?

I grew up in the mill towns around Pittsburgh, a VERY heavily ethnic area -- to the point that an Italian accent can make me homesick. One of my classmates, a third generation citizen, was given the traditional name Serafino -- which no one knew until legal names were read out at graduation practice because he had always been "Sam" and wouldn't have been caught dead speaking Italian in public.

None of the 3rd generation kids did -- not the Italians, not the Greeks, not the Polish, no one. They were AMERICANS.

And Sam's grandma, whose English was as limited as my Italian would be if I, like her, immigrated to a foreign country in middle age, did her shopping and any interactions she had outside her family and ethnic community in English without expecting "press 2 for Italian" on anything.

This isn't new....
.....and it isn't about Hispanics, either.
Ever call customer service for help with your computer....and wound up talking to someone who was obviously in India?
Did you REALLY think his name was Chip? or Larry? or Dennis?
Please.

Names
I have a lot of fun learning what names mean. I learned this from my father. Driving through a small town once, he looked at a grocery store and began laughing. When I asked, he said, "The name on that store translates as Garbage collector's grocery." It is fun to know what names mean. Smith, Baker and Farmer are easy, but others aren't. An ancestor of mine was "Jacobsmeyer" which means that sometime in the past I had an ancestor who was a peasant belonging to "Jacob." I worked, for a short unhappy period for a "Pittman." I told a friend, he must have had an ancestor digging coal in one of the coal pits in England, and that is where he belongs. Anyway forget the nonsense, enjoy the diversity "legal" diversity. help stop the REAL threat to...

...America--> the ILLEGAL alien incursion

Even as Mexican drug cartels are spreading their virulent violence over here, and ILLEGAL alien labor continues pirating jobs that Americans will DEFINITELY do, and decimating American social services (schools, hospitals, anchor baby welfare), the ObaMessiah and the left have stopped construction of the border fence. Guess why?!

Because those are future big entitlement government 'Çrat voters crashing the border!

While America needs SOME educated, skilled LEGAL immigrant labor, the so-called "cheap" labor (the largely ignorant, indigent ILLEGAL aliens) are REALLY egregiously expensive all-in to America.

Your hotel room, produce and Tyson Chicken are no cheaper to YOU, but YOU get stuck with the tab for the myriad social services they will prey upon and the pandemic social pathologies (crimes, barrio blight, drugs, gangs, illegitimacy's, dropouts, cultural disparateness) they pervade like a scourge of locusts.

why the Left wants amnesty

"Spreading the Wealth = Buying Votes"

Those who study carefully know that when the ObaMessiah says that the new health care will not cover ILLEGAL aliens that this is a moot point... the Left intends to give them amnesty anyway so they can all vote for yet more big entitlement guvment, thus assuring the hegemony of the Left.

When you hear braying that "öur immigration system is broken" and "we need comprehensive immigration reform," you can presume that the speaker has an angle for favoring amnesty-- and the personal $, self-aggrandizement, and power it brings that speaker-- such as Linda Chavez, who personally profits from ILLEGAL aliens, just like Nancy Pelosi (employs them in her vineyards) and others.

the insidious harms caused by ILLEGALS

...are even worse than most perceive or imagine.

It is truly STUNNING how ILLEGAL aliens are enervating/decimating America.

A common myth is to suggest that they are no different from the waves of poor Irish, etc., who came here 100 years ago... it is artfully suggested that they will do well and assimilate over time.

But America itself is VERY different today... we left behind our agrarian-based economy decades ago (where the ignorant poor could get along and sometimes hope to advance).

Today, we have an advanced service economy-- there is little way a largely ignorant, poor Mexican clinging to Spanish can hope to advance. Soft skills (education, language, savoir-faire) are required for most jobs, especially for upward mobility socio-economically.

Hispanics ALONE among immigrants still trail the native born even by the 3rd generation-- all OTHER immigrants (Asian, European, etc.) EXCEED the average American in socio-economic status by that point.

Each ILLEGAL alien family of 4 will drain $1.4 MILLION more in services used than any form of taxes paid in over a lifetime per Heritage... and amnesty for 12 million will cost at least $2.6 TRILLION in direct costs alone...does that sound like "cheap" labor, amigos?!?!

ILLEGALS go HOME!!!!

I'm fed up with paying taxes to take care of ILLEGALS here stealing our services from American LEGAL Citizens!!!!

It is disgusting that our government continues to allow it to happen. It is wrong!!! Someone needs to wake up and STOP ILLEGALS by STOPPING all their free services. Emergency health care ONLY!!!! Nothing more!!!!

When are we as a country going to wake up and put a stop to this insanity.
I have a friend whose girlfriend has had to sell everything she owns to pay for medical bills due to cancer... she should be an ILLEGAL alien...maybe they would treat her for free... this is just wrong!!!

I will NOT learn Spanish to accommodate them!!! They came to MY country, they need to learn OUR language if they want to live and work here and they MUST work here legally!!!!!

Texas was NOT stolen from Mexico and they should accept that fact. The Republic of Texas declared its independence from the corrupt government of Mexico about nine years before it became part of the United States of America. The United States of America did NOT steal Texas from Mexico!!!

ILLEGALS are nothing but thieves coming here to steal our resources while the money our sorry employers pay them goes back to their countries. We need to start enforcing our laws already on the books and SECURE the border!!!!

Linda Chavez and ILLEGAL aliens

No gracias!

ILLEGAL al8iens and health care

ILLEGALS displace Americans for a lower wage, and no benefits, in construction, food service, and hospitality services. The ONLY TRUE beneficiaries are the LAWBREAKING, miscreant employers and the ILLEGAL aliens themselves-- ALL Americans then suffer the myriad concomitant socio-economic costs.

Is an armed robber excused because he wants?

We cannot excuse ILLEGAL aliens because THEIR guvments are corrupt and THEIR guvments/economies are plutocratic and despotic.

Our unemployment now officially approaches 10%, and underemployment is about 16%-- a swell time to have 15-20 million ILLEGALS in many jobs that the young and lower-skilled would gladly take.

Now comes health care... the Left intends to treat ILLEGALS at YOUR expense one way or the other, BUT DOES NOT INTEND for their new big guvment voters to pay for it... such a deal for YOU, Middle America!

Basic translation rule...
is to never translate proper nouns. If the owner of a name wants to "Americanize" it, that is his or her choice. Otherwise, respect the given name and, in this increasingly multi-cultural world, learn to pronounce it correctly.

Below was a recent post here about how ILLEGAL aliens view their incursion into America, which has been aided and abetted by open border NAU quislings like Presidente Jorge Bush, Amnesty John McCain and the Chamber lobbies-- and by the big entitlement guvment voter-seeking left like the ObaMessiah:

(slight editing below for clarity)

(post from a Mexifornia resident)

My Take-->

I have many Hispanic friends, and I speak enough Spanish to understand practically all of what I hear. This is what I have found:

Mexicans truly believe that California and much of the U.S. western states were wrongly taken from Mexico. This is THEIR land-- their ancestors were here first, and some can trace their ancestry back to before their land was taken away. Hence, the Reconquista (re-taking, or re-conquering) agenda.

Mexican ILLEGALS truly believe that the U.S. liberals stupidly passed the laws that give them all the freebies: free health care, zero will to enforce immigration laws (cannot ask a Hispanic person for immigration status), and others... and all those laws are there for them. If not for them, then why were they passed?!

They also know that their rate of having children is far greater than that of Anglos. They understand that it is only a matter of time before they become the majority of the voting populace because they are willing to have children.

lori, the hall
I agree, what a non-issue.

On the other hand, with all that's going on these days, it's nice to fall back on trivialities once in a while.

My own pet peeves re. names:

--yuppie parents who use non-gender specific last names as first names, as in "Oh Taylor (or Madison or Richmond), come get your scones."

--parents exposed as illiterates when it came time to fill out the birth certificate (like they really meant to name their kid "Antwan" or "Andray").

--feminist hyphenated names: ok, Ms. Smith-Anderson, what happens when your family gets down to the next generations and your great-great-grandkid's name resembles that of a Spanish nobleman?

Middle America's views...

...on the ILLEGAL invasion, pervasion, and dissolution of America...

Several recent polls indicate that independents now rank ILLEGAL immigration as their GREATEST CONCERN for America. It is an arrant disingenuous farce when the PC ilk, MSM, and Hispanic apologists posit that Middle America is divided about what to do about ILLEGAL aliens, or suggests that it is a serious concern only among "fringe conservatives." Consider these (also mainstream) poll results:

The general public overwhelmingly favors REAL immigration reform (BUT not Scamnesty posing as "C.I.R."). Poll after poll shows that Americans want well-enforced, sensible, and sustainable immigration laws.

* 89% of Americans think ILLEGAL immigration into the U.S. is a problem (30% "extremely serious," 33% "very serious," and 26% "somewhat serious."

(Time Magazine)

* 82% think that not enough is being done along the borders to keep ILLEGAL aliens from crossing into the country.

(New York Times/CBS)

* 68% feel that the number of immigrants who cross the border, whether legal or ILLEGAL is "too high".

(Polling Company)

* 62% oppose making it easier for ILLEGAL aliens to become citizens of America.

(Quinnipiac Univ.)

*71% believe that ILLEGAL aliens should not qualify for in-state tuition rates at colleges and universities.

*77 % oppose making drivers' licenses available to ILLEGAL aliens.

*71% favor requiring foreign visitors to carry universal I.D. card

*77% say that employers can require English-only on the job

per the Dallas Federal Reserve study

https://www.dallasfed.org/research/indepth/2004/id0401a.htm l

excerpt (2006):

Immigrant Assimilation: Why Worry?

A confluence of factors has generated concerns about the assimilation of low-skilled immigrants and their children. First, immigration has reached record levels. The United States has surpassed the previous record inflows of immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, and the foreign-born now number more than 33 million. Twenty percent of schoolchildren today are the children of immigrants.

These children face a knowledge-based economy where the premium on education has been rising steadily. Human capital—more than ever before—drives wages and investment and determines future growth. U.S. workers also count on the next generations to pay for their retirement through programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

And lastly, while many first-generation immigrants are not citizens and are ineligible for most welfare programs, their citizen children are eligible. As a result, from a fiscal perspective, the economic success of immigrant children is even more important than that of their parents.

Conclusion:

Worrying about immigrant assimilation boils down to worrying about Mexican immigration. Non-Hispanic immigrants consistently outperform natives, even after three generations.

Meanwhile, Mexican immigrants make up the largest and least educated immigrant group. While they make the biggest gains (coming from such a mean base) after coming to the United States, they still lag behind in education and wage outcomes even after three generations.

YOU can help save America!
But time is VERY short! And the ObaMessiah and the Left want to embrace ILLEGAL aliens as voters-- almost all would vote for big entitlement guvment.

Keep rattling the cages in Congress so that money flowing from the special interests trying to sell out America for cheap labor or power will seem less "special" to them. It is easy to reach them at numbersusa.com with prepared, targeted e-mails, OR you can send direct e-mails or call them at their official contact sites and offices just below.

BOOKMARK these sites and contact legislators OFTEN and with vigor. Remember your state and local level pols also-- do you live in a "sanctuary city" which is openly violating federal and state laws, but still receiving federal tax $?

Tell Congress that you support the SAVE Act, and let them know you are monitoring their votes and will not accept "paths to citizenship" for those who broke the law to come here, work here, and tap into/drain benefits they were not entitled to (medicaid, free schooling and lunches, welfare) and did not pay for.

For now, it is STILL YOUR COUNTRY... but NOW is the time for all good Americans to come to the aid of THEIR country.

Mr. Whitten didn't do his homework
Taos ain't Texas and people there are likely to have Spanish names because many residents are descendants of the Conquistadores who arrived long before any Anglo set foot on American soil.

Tourists in New Mexico expect to encounter folks with Spanish sounding names. Imagine if the networks asked Juan Williams to become John or Geraldo Rivera to become Gerald.

Ms. Chavez, FJ and Sandy are all right on the money.

Let people have their names even if they want to change it to Ochocinco as did some NFL player whose number is 85. And, he didn't even get it right. It should have been Ochenta y Cinco.

He bought the business, he owns it and you are correct- he has a legal right this. If he wants to call every employee Fred, he can do that. The question is, why is this national news, and why does Linda Chavez feel the need to get involved. There is not one employee of the motel bound by law to work there. If the customers feel this wrong, they won't be spending the night. And the situation will work itself out. Why bring in LaRaza and every other Hispanic rights organization to protest? Because there is a culture of entitlement emerging, and thats the real problem.
