Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama has garnered praise from center to right -- and has highly irritated the left -- with the centrism of his major appointments. Because Obama's own beliefs remain largely opaque, his appointments have led to the conclusion that he intends to govern from the center.

Obama the centrist? I'm not so sure.

Take the foreign policy team: Hillary Clinton, James Jones, and Bush holdover Robert Gates. As centrist as you can get. But the choice was far less ideological than practical. Obama has no intention of being a foreign policy president. Unlike, say, Nixon or Reagan, he does not have aspirations abroad. He simply wants quiet on his eastern and western fronts so that he can proceed with what he really cares about -- his domestic agenda.

Similarly his senior economic team, the brilliant trio of Tim Geithner, Larry Summers and Paul Volcker: centrist, experienced and mainstream. But their principal task is to stabilize the financial system, a highly pragmatic task in which Obama has no particular ideological stake.

A functioning financial system is a necessary condition for a successful Obama presidency. As in foreign policy, Obama wants experts and veterans to manage and pacify universes in which he has little experience and less personal commitment. Their job is to keep credit flowing and the world at bay so that Obama can address his real ambition: to effect a domestic transformation as grand and ambitious as Franklin Roosevelt's.

As Obama revealingly said just last week, "this painful crisis also provides us with an opportunity to transform our economy to improve the lives of ordinary people." Transformation is his mission. Crisis provides the opportunity. The election provides him the power.

The deepening recession creates the opportunity for federal intervention and government experimentation on a scale unseen since the New Deal. A Republican administration has already done the ideological groundwork with its unprecedented intervention, culminating in the forced partial nationalization of nine of the largest banks, the kind of stuff that happens in Peronist Argentina with a gun on the table.

Additionally, Henry Paulson's invention of the number $700 billion forever altered our perception of imaginable government expenditure. Another $20 billion for Citigroup? Lunch money.

Moreover, no one in Congress even pretends that spending should be pay as you go (i.e., new expenditures balanced by higher taxes or lower spending), as the Democrats disingenuously promised when they took over Congress last year. Even some conservative economists are urging stimulus (although structured far differently from Democratic proposals). And public opinion, demanding action, will buy any stimulus package of any size. The result: undreamed amounts of money at Obama's disposal. Continued...

Life
Kiss your freedoms goodbye, your guns and affordable electric bills say see ya. yep they too are gone with the wind. Excuse me, I mean Obama. You wanted change you got it, now reap
the thorns that came with Obama.

Precedent
Obama also has the gift of the precedent Bush set with Treasury. Small step for other Departments to begin taking over the country by fiat, by rule, by funding and unfunding. Congress will be irrelevant. The EPA has already ruled much of America for years. The coup d'etat is almost complete., Republicans complicit. Conservatives complicit. Religious leaders complicit.Freedom-loving (supposedly) academics complicit. Since business went complicit, it's all over.

Obama is just another politician.
Obama is void of any ideals, let alone any new ideals.

Obama will say and do anything, just like any other politician desperate to hold on to power and stay in the spot light.

Obama is a one-term president. It is already time for change from him to anybody else, and he has not even taken office yet.

Good new is, that he is putting Republicans in his cabinet, making it that much easier for the Republican 2012 transition team to take back the White House.

Either way, American people are choked
Obama is far from a Centrist, along with the majority of his Cabinet picks. I personally didn't think Centrism even existed in the Democrat Party. If Obama decides to keep the Bush Tax cuts, or even slash taxes, we get Government growth. If Obama decides to print and spend, we get Government growth. Either way, we will get Government growth that will be out of control. Only way to stop this is for Congressional true Conservatives on both sides to stand up and draw a line in the sand.

re: Jaymay
quote: "I wish folks would think twice before blithely saying "You cannot legislate morality." ALL legislation is BASED on morality...what is right and fair, and what is wrong, that is morality. What you cannot legislate is the mind of man...are we going to behave morally, or immorally, legally or illegally, all personal decisions."

Actually, just laws are not based on morality, but rather protection of individual liberty and property. Murder violates a person's right to life; theft takes the property of another. Thus, it is not only immoral to murder or steal; however, it is not illegal to covet your neighbors wife or lie to your kids.

You have no right to force your own moral code on me, nor I on you. Government should ensure that each person is equal before the law, and protect each individual's life, liberty, property, and pursuit of happiness, enforce contracts, and protect against fraud and coercion. If you want me to follow a particular moral code, you should attempt to persuade me rather than using the government to force me.

Latest on Obama's Unlawful "presidency"
Still so much talk about Obama, as if he's qualified for the presidency. He is not a natural U.S. born citizen.

curmudgeon (AR)
Curmudgeon wrote, "remember what centrist means to a leftist."

Exactly! It depends on what part of the elephant you are touching. The liberals feel that liberalism is a centrist ideology. Ask any lib who they consider a "leftist" and they can't answer the question.

To libs, the right-wing is comprised of radical extremist religious nuts who want to openly carry assault rifles.

Watch Obama and his crew feed and nurture the liberals' perceptions of the right as part of the "NEW New Deal".

Nobama will concentrate
on destroying our great country and values with his domestic agenda. He will appoint radical left judges that will infect every mile of the USA and then he will bankrupt our country with his new deal..allowing illegals to take over and get all these jobs..their agenda is to allow illegals to come in groves because they will vote Democrat ..he wants to turn American into Europe 2.0! His deception will be realized as the months unfold..just watch! You like Chicago's crime and corruption?..Then you just wait

What Does This Mean?
In this column Krauthammer says: "With the country clamoring for action and with all psychological barriers to government intervention obliterated (by the conservative party, no less), the stage is set....."

What does he mean "by the conservative party, no less"? First off, what is the conservative party? If it exists, I want to join. Kidding aside, what does he mean by that statement?

That was then, now Obama's President
Would you call Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid centrist. Does anyone remember the names Pelosi was called after she became the first Woman Speaker of the House and didn't withdraw the troops from Iraq. Both Pelosi and Reid were attacked because our troops were still in Iraq and were still being funded. The Left didn't abandon them, because of who and what they were before they got their new positions. Before Obama won the Presidency. He voted as liberal as they come. He had to. Now that Obama is President elect he must govern as President and his Presidency covers both the Republican voters as well as the Democrat voters. Does that make Obama a centrist.

of course he is a centrist
but remember what centrist means to a leftist. it means he will appropriate most of your property, not all of it. he will confiscate the firearms of some of the citizens, but not from those citizens who are privileged to be police or government agency. he will provide welfare for some citizens, but not those likely to harbor conservative views. he will bail out unions, but not workers that must compete with illegal aliens. of course he is a centrist. center extreme left.

Summers - LA

Subject: Jo,
According to the WH press secretary, Bush will throw money at the Big 3 to keep from delivering a bankrupt car industry to Obama. Bush needs to stay at the ranch and stop giving us the benefit of his thoughts. He will throw money at what will still be bankrupt. Paulson needs to be thrown off the nearest (very high) bridge. Summers
==============

I agree 100%.

No bailouts. The government over steps their constitutional right. Government owning business in any market is bad news. It's not their job to spend our money this way. Vote whoever was for a bailout OUT of government 2010/2012.

Bush is putting a cork in the Hoover damn so he can exit before she blows. Waste of money -- but then again what is the value of rapidly printed treasury dollars these days anyhow?

A New and Interesting Plan of Attack
Wow, Mr. Krauthammer, just when I was beginning to think that Obama might actually work out okay(even though I didn't vote for him) you've given me a whole new angle to see this.

I was thinking he'd run a conservative agenda in his first four years, just to suck everyone in to giving him a second term, and then go all lefty on us in the second term.

If it's as you suggest, maybe a second term won't be as sure a thing?

Silver Lion
I am so weary of BDS and claims that the Dems have all of the answers, I am looking forward to seeing what these mini-brains will concoct. There is no way that BO will not be at cross purposes with Nancy and Harry. From the day he was elected, his re-election campaign started.

Jo,
According to the WH press secretary, Bush will throw money at the Big 3 to keep from delivering a bankrupt car industry to Obama. Bush needs to stay at the ranch and stop giving us the benefit of his thoughts. He will throw money at what will still be bankrupt. Paulson needs to be thrown off the nearest (very high) bridge.

How can we print trillions of dollars, without destroying the purchasing power of our dollar? It can't be done, but our gov't is trying...

==================

To get control of the mass's you must first get control of their freedoms. What better way to do so then to control the private sector? And they are working on it.

Can't wait to see the results....
of Barry's works.......lmao....we must give the people what they demand......lol.....you want change?.....You Obama supporters are going to get exactly what you voted for......lmao

"He intends to transform America."

lol......

Money will be the problem
for Obama and the American people. We seem to forget that the gov't doesn't have any more money. The trillions needed for the bailouts etc. will have to be borrowed or printed.

Governments can go bankrupt too, and that is where the US gov't is headed. How can we print trillions of dollars, without destroying the purchasing power of our dollar? It can't be done, but our gov't is trying...

Jim - VA
Question is, will it be Chapter 11 bankruptcy, or Chapter 7 bankruptcy? --- Jim

Through our history we've had large changes. We went from Horse and buggy to the automobile. If they don't survive bankruptcy, they will be sold off and other industry will emerge from the ashes. It won't be pain free. And it certainly will be dark days for the average worker.

Unions ties to greedy politicians cost workers jobs. Workers ought to be livid at the Union and government for this mess.

Don't be fooled this isn't a bailout for the big 3 - it's a bailout for the American Autoworker union and corrupt government officials who support them.

jerabaub
"slightly"?

You seen to be unaware of just how dramatic a shift in paradigms the Obama ascendancy represents. Nor how improbable a shift in the opposite direction is.

Jim
Your analogy is appropriate.

Bankruptcy
The Big Three might not be the only entity to have to declare bankruptcy, if the govnerment spends more and more and more - as it appears willing to do.

Question is, will it be Chapter 11 bankruptcy, or Chapter 7 bankruptcy?

If it's the latter, we might be looking like ancient Israel, captured by the Assyrians or Babylonians.

thr worm has turned.
I think there is some truth to the notion expressed by many here that our nation is moving slightly to the "left".

And in that regard, Bush is only mirroring the nation on spending.

On the nation's move to the left, just look at the health care issue.

Now, AARP, AMA, the insurance industry interest group that created the television advertisements that attacked "Hillarycare" in the 1990s, are now all onboard, to varying degrees, on more government intervention on health care.

The worm has turned.

Just how much remains to be seen.

I agree with created soul
Obama WILL govern from the far left, but he will put on a show of centrism. This is going to make him very dangerous.

Leopards don't change their spots
Obama "spit" is exactly who conservatives know he is. A dirty politican who operated in the political Chicago shadows or as he called it "community organizing". He's arrogant and as dirty as they come. He's going to govern from the far left. All we are being treated to right now are the first days of the 2012 campaign. Don't be fooled. Obama "spit" collects fools for a hobby.

U say U live in "a multimillion $ house 2 miles from the Pacific". What's the name of the Institution/Facility?? I have to go to Pasadena next week and might drop in!! CHEERS
By the way I meant no disrespect of Ob when I referred to him as a "Young Man" ..When Ur "old as dirt" as I am, EVERYBODY is a young man..Well, almost allSOME might be classified as "PUNKS""

Jamesbondi says:
"the economy will again be strong "

Wanna bet, James?

Wrong On All Counts
If the economy is strong, it will be because of people who actually work to support those who dont. That wont last very wrong. Gitmo aint never gonna close, because no one, not Europe, not Africa, not the US is willing to provide a place to house these prisoners. And your comment about where is Bush now -- false. Bush is pushing to give the auto industry a bail out.

Respect our President???
You mean like the leaders in Iran who are mocking him and telling him to stick his "carrot package."???

OBAMA'S LEADERSHIP
What has Obama lead? He has been a JUNIOR Senator both in Illinois and D.C.

For anyone familiar with the process, a JUNIOR Senator is a benchwarmer.

Now that he will have power, time will tell if he will lead or be led.

I suspect he will be led by the special interests to whom he is beholden to the tune of 4 trillion dollars promised in new spending. And he will most likely be led by those with leadership experience like Pelosi, Reid, and some of his handlers.

I hope that I am wrong, but his background with the corrupt Chicago Democrat Machine doesn't smack of leadership, it smacks of government by committee.

Obama's success
the economy will again be strong, we'll be out of Iraq, hopefully we'll get Bin Laden and close Gitmo, and yes, the world will respect our president.

it isn't a matter of smooth talking. It is having someone who is smart, articulate, who knows how to lead. Where's the leader right now from the WH while the car crisis goes on? He's nowhere. He's the worst president ever.

Buyer beware.
Charles is right on point. Obama has been handed the keys to the largest casino in the world. U.S. Treasury. Unlimited money at his disposal,Democratic congress and senate. He has own personal financial harem. What a future four years, and possibly eight.

In Defense of C. Krauthammer
I think many of you writers out there are harshing his cool. This man is a thinker and I would take him seriously if I were you. You sit there at your desks when you should be working. Tilt a Coca-Cola back and throw an opinion down on this page.

Regarding Obama- Never underestimate the power of a weak minded man in the hands of Satan nor the judgement of a God who is being asked to leave.

jamesbondi
writes, "My friends all over the world are so thrilled to finally have an educated president who can speak well!"

You and your friends appear to have incredibly low standards. It seems to have been a common refrain amongst the libs for the last eight years. Give me a good speaker. Give us a guy that talks smooth. That is what we want. And, that is what we now have. Thanks guys.

That skill is worthless in deciding the proper course of action but, very important in selling whatever action is chosen and defending it. George made the right choice and communicated it poorly. Obama will most likely make bad choices but, he will sound really good talking about it. It just proves something conservatives have known all along. Liberals prefer rhetoric and conservatives prefer substance.

Obama's Job

President-Elect is just doing fine now, of course he is a True centrist and realist. He will withdraw our troops from Iraq within a month after Jan 22, 09. According to obama Adminstration senior adviser, ALL U S TROOPS WILL BE OUT WITHIN 3 MONTHS. Thnks Mr president-elect, we must stop this Genocide against Iraqi people, we are already killed more than 5 million IRAQIS, enough is enough. Former President Bush is a war criminal and he is responsible for the massacre of more than 5 million iraqi women and children.

"Obama... is going to be an amazing, successful president"

Depends on your definition of "successful".

schmobama
give me the bucket!

Is it something in the water
in the backward parts of our country that you get delusional like this, Mel? "Dictatorial ambitions'? Stalinesque? SDP? Did your mothers shoot moonshine intravenously while they were pregnant with you?

God is not an American, why would she help Americans? And where the heck do you get your information?

I live in a multimillion house 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean. What's your problem with this country?

But first...
Obama will try to silence the opposition by implementing the "Fairness" doctrine, or local content regulations. Then he will try to bankrupt gun manufacturers (without a bailout) in order to begin the process of disarming the public.

This man has dictatorial ambitions, and there is a dense Stalinesque stench that envelopes the SDP (Socialist Democratic Party) controlled Congress that will not only do his bidding, but will initiate its own, but Obama compatable, agenda.

We are in the final stages of the destruction of the United States as a free enterprise country, and entering a new age of government control over the day-to-day lives of all Americans. It is not inconceivable that the U.S. will approach the status of a third world country, especially in health care and manufacturing. Almost 50% of the American people are already wards of the state. A nation can survive with approximately one-third of its people being non productive.
But when that figure approaches or exceeds one-half, survival is questionable.

It is too late to ask for God's help!

He isn't a 'young man'
he is almost 50 years old. He is going to be an incredible president from 1/20/09 up to the inauguration on 1/20/17. Yup, 2017. And people like you, Roy, are going to be so upset for each day of each year. That alone makes electing 'that one' fabulous! My friends all over the world are so thrilled to finally have an educated president who can speak well!

Desert Rat I hear U!!!!
As I've posted several times on this Thread, I'm takin a page from Santa: I'm makin a list!!
Starting 6 months from Jan 20th I'm gonna start "Bad-Mouthin" some of the Obama Cheerleaders and, Like U, I'm not gonna let up!!
This young man Mr O doesn't have a clue what he needs to do (sometimes referred to around here as S&*T OR GO BLIND) and it's gonna be cute to see how his Disciples respond to that..Itruly do wish him Luck--My kids and Grandkids deserve that..OB does NOT!!!CHEERS

the Illinois governor
made it clear that Obama was not playing ball with him. He called him a m-therf--ker.

Obama is going to be the greatest president since FDR.

It's just Embarrassing...

"Change" ... all a big lie
"Hope" ... for a select few (with money)

Obama and his Governor buddy are just making America look pathetic.

Has Obama no shame?

He should just pull out now and forget this Presidency - Saving the American people from repetitive disgrace.

Interesting...
That leftist such as Conason at Salon are already trying to use the Clinton administration's numerous scandals to defend Obama and to pin the blame on Republicans? And Obama is not even sworn it.

I am still trying to give Obama a chance but already, it isn't looking good. I fear the country is going to be drug through another eight years of constant, hideous scandals with the liberal, nut-bar media trying to blame it all on the Republicans for having the audacity to call him on out on it.

TruthHurts? and Jamesbondi
If Obama performs even half as well as you expect him to, I will be satisfied. I hope someone is taking down the screen names of all these truthers so we can have fun saying 'told you so' in a year or two. It might be the only fun available.

stupid is as stupid does
people are fed up with the Bush bashing, and will not put up with the Obama bashing with all the problems Bush has left us. So, get used to banging your head against the wall for quite some time. No one is listening to the right anymore. Colin Powell called out Limbaugh. About time.

It doesn't matter what NOBAMA does
because I'm gonna be around to be sure I have fun berating him as a do-nothing political hack of a president for the next 4 years (eight if necessary, but we can always hope for the best).

EIGHT years of lefties slamming Bush, no matter what he did or said, and regardless of the idiocy on the left, all we heard was NO BUSH.

Well, now it's my turn. After 8 long years of lefty cr@p, I'm gonna be all over NOBAMA. Can't wait.

oh, please
obama had nothing to do with any of that. Keep up the criticism. I love the fact that the GOP will remain in the minority for many years to come.

What a fool, you are Arby!

Why do the killer terrorists want BHO as our Commander in Chief? He's a coward and wants to talk w those who will kill if they get any chance to do so Why can't you see this You idiot

Jamesbondi
As an Illinois resident very near Chicago, I think I might have more of a handle on the city's politics than a resident of the left coast. The blog posted is precisely correct in every detail.

The Chicago Democrat Machine's (Some "illustrious" members: Boss Daley, Ayers, Rezko, Blago, Farrakhan, Wright, ACORN etc. ad nauseum) "legacy" in this state is the highest state sales taxes and gas prices of the "58" states, crumbling highways, rampant gang war in Chicago, an unemployment rate 20% higher than the national average, resident flight to other states, and a new title: Murder Capitol of the U.S.

Is there a right anymore?
Obama remains a liberal to be sure -- but as a lifelong conservative and Republican, I have had to ask myself again and again over the last 3 months, is that so bad? Is he so bad?

Having voted for Bush twice, I increasingly have nothing but disdain for him and his administration. I like what he has done in terms of military power and national security, but beyond that, Mr. Bush is a spendthrift of the highest order, a big government guy of the highest order, and increasingly with support for never-ending bailouts, he looks pretty much like a socialist too.

Where oh where is Ron Paul anyway???

Obama, no matter what you right wing
nutters thinks, is going to be an amazing, successful president.

Aiming High...REALLY High..

His critics would point out that the US Economy is small potatoes compared to the impact that Obama THINKS that he can have in the world. His critics would be correct.

He has not and he will not.

Robert, it's not Bush who veered left
The country has been tacking towards the left, that is, towards more government and less individual freedom, ever since the original Progressive movement of the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century. Its first President was Wilson, but it manifested itself in both parties.

Hoover was an engineer by trade, and a firm believer in the power of the federal government and its application.

Bush is who he is precisely because intellectuals, educators and politicians have been pulling the country in that direction for over a century. They have produced more and more people who, even if they consider themselves conservative, would answer as "yes" when asked if the federal government, rather than individuals and the free market, should resolve any given issue. And it is those people who are comfortable with a Bush (Sr or Jr), and many who are comfortable with an Obama.

It will take a cataclysm to undo what has been done in that century.

Well said and, unfortunately, most likely true.

Dr Doug the dolt blathered:

"Republicans will go out of their way to block every decent proposal, especially those that favor the little guys (e.g., autoworkers). This kind of obstructionism is of course exactly the goal of Krauthammer's fear mongering. "

There will be no decent proposals you gasbag. I only pray that the Consevatives stick it to the GOP and stand up for the minoritys rights against the absolute tyranny of the majority.

Re:Centerist???
I don't think so, this guy is left and always will be thanks to GW bush and his left wing policies and crap he has pulled this nation has been moved to the left and anyone who does'nt think this is so just look at what GW Bush has done as president and I think you will agree!!!

Nothing to be unsure of
bh0 is "centrist"--so long as you use as political "centre" a point waaaaaaaaaay to the left of Stalin!

Do the conditions sound familiar?
Krauthammer writes:

"...Obama was quite serious when he said he was going to change the world. And now he has a national crisis, a personal mandate, a pliant Congress, a desperate public..."

Sounds like 1933, and another starry-eyed popular orator, who promised everyone what they wanted and said he would change the world.

He led his country and the world to disaster.

And I don't mean Roosevelt.

Americans Should Be Unsure
Americans don't know who the real Obama is because they didn't bother to ask that he follow Article II of the U.S. Constitution
and leave millions unsure.

Americans are now unsure about his saying Never and No about meeting or speaking with the Illinois governor and now they're unsure about Axelrod stating that "I know the president-elect met with him," and now says he made a "mistake."

A newspaper wrote an article stating that Obama was meeting with the Illinois governor back in November 2008, but now says that they don't know anything about that meeting leaving the American unsure about that story.

The American people should remain unsure about Obama's connections with Rezko; Ayres; Wright: Pflager; Blogajevic; Axelrod's statements; Rham's quiet on the meeting with Blogavejic; and the unprecedented campaign funds; corrupt Acorn; his birth; his Harvard records; his and Michelle's connections to other anti-American groups; and on and on - yet, more Muslims with anti-American ties to Islamic terrorists groups are moving into positions of power in our country and providing funding to some banking institutions who are also asking for billions from the American people who are living in tents in Ontario, California, and wearing color coded bracelets. Some thing wrong with this picture my fellow citizens!

"Undreamed amounts of money"?
Where do you think the money comes from to run the government, Charles? Mainly, it comes from all of us poor suckers out here who keep sending in our tax dollars on a regular basis. Did it ever come to mind that there may be a limit to what we can and will pay? Right now, much of the national economy is near being in the tank, Charles. I'm sure you've noticed. Do you think that Obama the Magnificent and his gang of socialists in the congress have a magic wand to wave to make the economy better any time soon? If they don't, where are all these massive amounts of money from taxes going to come from? Or, is it just more deficit-spending dead ahead?

Good for Obama
As an Obama supporting Liberal (and proud of it), I hope Krauthammer's is right--I am proudly looking forward to Obama's transformation after Bush's efforts to destroy everything good about America!

What can we do?
yep... it's coming.

http://thenewliberal.org/2008/11/10/the-‘big-bang’-up/

obama the centrist
i first heard c krauthammer talk about this (when he was a guest commentator) on fox news sunday. and i was like "yes! that's it!" finally someone who makes sense of this - for me. why all these seemingly centrist appointmens? everyone else seemed to be giddy about them, but not of it seemed right to me.

FOCA and Obama
No way is this man in the center! I think if Obama pushes this bill to pass it will be the beginning of the end for him. I have asked many people who voted for Obama what they think for FOCA and not one person knows anything about it and when I tell them what it is they are shocked and mortified and say that is not someone who is in the center? Put this together with a really bad economy and we may see what happen in Athens happen here!I think people will protest like we have never seen before

Charles Krauthammer
writes, "Obama was quite serious when he said he was going to change the world. And now he has a national crisis, a personal mandate, a pliant Congress, a desperate public -- and, at his disposal, the greatest pot of money in galactic history. (I include here the extrasolar planets.)"

The perfect storm. The parallels are eerie to 1932. While FDR's pot of money would seem small compared to today, at the time it was also the largest pot of money in galactic history. The pot also has no bottom except our imagination because it is a collective pot based on the future tax burden and earning power of the proletariat. I am depressed. Btw, good column.

Did you notice his energy dept pick is also a greenie? Between the Energy Dept, EPA, Commerce, etc he can wreak enough havoc with environmental regulations that economic growth would become impossible.

Bush the Enabler
And can anyone tell me why Bush insists upon enabling all this? Is he truly so weak that he can stand for nothing on the domestic front? I had hoped he was not like his father, but my hopes have been regularly dashed. Now, again, he has shown that his need for elite approval trumps any good sense he might have. Can our next candidate actually believe in something other than what the newspapers tell him he should? Despite the gloom, though, we must never surrender.

Centrist?
The day Obama becomes a centrist, I will probably be pushed off the right side of the planet. There is now way he can move that far to the right.

We'll see where he is on Jan. 21st and I'll bet it's not in the center.

President Obama
1/20/09--1/20/17. Imagine how much money the Rushs and Lauras and Annies and Kruathammers will make from those years of trying to tell you what they think you need to know instead of what reality is. Face facts folks: Obama won in a landslide compared to either Bush or Clinton. Obama won votes from every demographic group, every one. People are losing their jobs and hope. We need someone who does not really have strong ideological positions on many issues to get beyond the crisis caused by Republican leadership. And let's be clear about that--GOP was in charge of Congress from 1994 through the end of 2006. They had Congress and the presidency from 2001 through 2006. This is their mess.

With the in-the-tank for foreign car companies GOP 'conservatives' assuring maybe another million unemployed workers, the GOP will be a minority party for a long, long time. National healthcare, New Deal fixes for the infrastructure that the GOP opposes, plus trying to put unions out of business as well as outsourcing as many jobs as possible, double assure the GOP as a minority for a long time. When you add in the fundy right's impact on many of us who believe in freedom of religion so long as you keep it out of our laws, buh bye GOP.

It's ALL conjecture!
No one knows the future, unless you are a Prophet of God! They guy has NO experience other than the Chicago cesspool he comes from. He's surrounded himself with Clintonites and centrists, he's voted the most liberal Senator and he escapes any and all scrutiny by the MSM. His books give us an idea of where he's going with his racial vitriol and liberal agenda, but can he accomplish this? I don't think the man has a clue. He's a true narcissist - he's enamored with himself and with being POTUS for HIS glory, not for ours.

If you have debt, pay it off and get your money overseas! Ride out the wave of horror about to face our nation for the next four years and if he accomplishes his will, America, the home of the free and the brave has ended.

Interesting
The thesis is that Obama appoints highly regarded people to areas he isn't interested in, adding to his credibility. Then he slips in people he really wants to work with in areas that he intends to change. This would explain the more controversial appointments of Holder and Browner.

Republican is not equal to conservative
I think we have seen enough of the liberal Democrat George Bush to realize that neo-cons are not conservatives, so let's give credit where credit is due. George's preoccupation with saving the UAW and the liberal left Democrats just elected is not out of character. Remember is angst about giving amnesty and free housing, medical care and college educations to anyone who could sneak into the country? It hasn't been that long ago people, get real. Obama a centrist? Not in his worst nightmare. What does a socialist, nationalize everything, throw out the Constitution liberal have to do to get recognized for his efforts?

On money, mandade and moxie
Of the three, I only recognize moxie. Obama will forever be linked with the word "audacity." It is an understatement when it comes to this icon of egotism.

As for money, there is no real money; it exists in the minds of politicians backed by the same logic that it is prudent to give huge mortgages to people who can't even prove their employment.

In terms of mandate, this too is suspect. What appears to be a mandate is nothing more than an illusion created by the mainstream media that fooled a disturbing number of people.

As the saying goes, one out of three ain't good.

Obama a centurist.
This is only superfisicial. He does not intend
to carry out but a socialistic agenda.

Repub/Cons Have NO Ideas...
you know it's ironic sitting hear reading all this sniveling, whining and complaining from a bunch or right wing repub/cons sore losers who had their arses handed to them in the last prez/congressional election by Prez-elect Obama and the Dems because was it not the GOP with the the Bush-Cheney administration and the former GOP led congress that was in control of the federal government for the last eight years with full control for 6 of the last eight.

Exactly what did the GOP do with this opportunity? They failed at governance and ran the country into the ground in the process with unrepetent divisiveness and sheer incompetence.
The majority of americans got fed up with it and completed the job they started at midterms by giving the dems complete control the federal government in repudiation of the last 8 years of failed GOP control..

So we have fresh new DEM POTUS in Obama along with a Dem controlled Congress with a mandate for "change" from whatever it was the GOP was doing the last 8 years and repubs/cons are expecting them to govern as they did? that is too hillarious to comtemplate...

Thats reason repubs/cons are in the predicament they are in..they have absolutely no ideas on how to solve the nations problems. they are static, stuck in the past, adverse to change.
They represent the status quo, cant think on their feet and adjust to events and situation as they occur. All they offer is negativity.

It is the reason they are the minority and look to stay that way as obama and dems work on successfully putting the usa back on the right course and cleaning up the mess bush and the repubs have left behind, thru fresh thinking and innovative proposals, something sorely lacking from the gop.

Tony Texas
Great article--organized, understandable, and scary.

The power in our new President's hand is awesome and can be exerted positively or negatively. Which will it be??--it is my feeling P/E Obama is no better known today than prior to his election. His team choices are at best are no indication of "change" but the Man will be in command with political backing at a very fragile time in our history. I fear for my grandchildren and my great granchildren and cannot visualize "The World as seen by Obama, Reed, Pelosi, Frank, and Shumer".

Thank you
Dear Mr. Krauthammer,

I believe you are an honest man who always seeks to be fair in your analysis. I have wanted to tell you that because that is getting rairer these days.

MAL, Missouri

As ususual you are right
Like you, I felt sure that an ideologue like Barak Obama would still be looking for a way to implement his agenda. I just thought that his appointments were meant to fool the American public into thinking that he was a centrist. I figured he realized that Joe the Plumber's question and his own answer had startled the American public and moving too quickly might not start a firestorm.

You analysis is really enlightening and as unusual is probably right on the money.

Centrist , my foot
AJ, Kansas

Hold on there. Krauthammer is not agreeing with what Obama is likely to do. He is just simply stating that we should not listen to all this puff about Obama being a centrist. Obama is an extreme leftist and that is going to be his focus as president. Krauthammer is warning us to be on guard of our rights and our wealth because Obama has his sights set on them.

Politicians: All Thieves!
I wrote this over a month ago: Questions, rhetorical questions: Will the taxpayer, who is being saddled so far with a trillion dollar bailout, ever get reimbursed? If so, how? The way I understand it so far is that money is being showered on these greedy incompetents/crooks on Wall Street with little assurance that we’ll recoup anything. I bet government can’t even track and account, accurately if at all, where the moneys are going and for what. Even if moneys will be repaid, it will be to the U.S. Treasury and, to my knowledge, no provisions in the bailout legislation addresses how the moneys returned to the treasury will be repatriated back to the taxpayer. What I strongly suspect will happen is that if by a miracle any moneys flows back into government coffers the temptation by the politico thieves will be to use the moneys to fund their programs or as a sludge fund to bail out some other government caused disaster without any of it ever returned to the originator, the taxpayer. I feel the shackles being clapped on my ankles and wrists already!

Obambi will make us long for "W"...
The arrogrant, pontificting, chain-smoking, skinny "community organizer" is a joke.

As disappointing as Bush has been to conservatives, Obambi will make not only conservatives with Bush were still in office.

This cocky, ego-driven, left-wing lawyer is the textbook example of a government subsidized, college professor - Rodan's Thinker.

He is soooo careful when he speaks because he's thinking two steps down the road, worry who not to insult and worrying how to prevent painting himself into a corner. He's a wimp. Unsuited to be president.

The luster is already fading off of The Messiah. Buyer's remorse down the road.

duckhunter, mi
you funny! and correct, too.

Not surprised
Geez, Krauthammer, are you in the same 'tingle up my leg' boat as Chris Matthews? You unabashedly are a proponent of socialism... the crux of the Obama 'plan'. Redistribute the wealth. Big gub'ment gonna save the peoples. I challenge you to name ONE government plan or program that was efficient, that created wealth, or that saved taxpayers money vs what could have been done in the private sector. I challenge you to list me ONE socialist country that has succeeded in their goals of providing a utopia for anyone except the ones running it. You just can't. So before you sell us down then road, you should go live in a Marxist society and see how the masses live. Then see if that Chris Matthews 'tingle' is still creeping up your leg...

Who is Obama?
Once again, the key issue is that NONE of us really knows who Obama is. He's too new on the national scene, has a tiny voting record, and we just don't know what his primary goals are. I give him credit for building a Centrist administration and believe this shows he's a pragmatist with respect to methods. But...what are his true ends?

IMO, Obama's #1 issue is redistributive economics. He wants to significantly raise the standard of living for the underclass and lower middle class and is willing to accept lower GDP growth, greater inefficienies (an inefficient govt program that achieves his ends is much preferred to an efficient private one that doesn't), and eventual loss of superpower status.

I don't think he cares a fig about foreign policy, most social issues (e.g. abortion, gay rights), or many other popular causes on the Left.

But, of course, I don't really know. And neither does anyone else.

Take off your tinfoil hat, Betty
Or do you not understand how your own government works? I am a federal employee. I pay into FICA.. and pay... and pay... and pay. With no small children to take as deductions, I also pay every April 15, even though I have the maximum deductions taken out each two weeks from my paycheck.

We also can lose our jobs just like "normal people".

And you can feel safe in the knowledge that when I got up at 4am to complete a 45 hour work week this morning, I hadn't raped or robbed anyone.

Chuck
You make the point well. Centrist today is what Leftist/Liberal was 20 years ago. Center-Right is what moder/liberal was. The goal posts move - and public opinion moves. And the government sidles leftward as well.

Moving the goal posts
Obama knows exactly what he is doing in appointing Clinton retreads.

By now most people in the opposition are calling "centrists" what they would have been calling "leftists" in 1992.

Score another one for the Left.

Michelle Obama
Michelle talks to him like he is a little kid and he listens. She wants this country humiliated and he will obey or she will drag him by his big ears and whup his butt. She was educated by the likes of Sual Alinsky and William Ayers and will stop at nothing to make her puppet husband do as she tells him.
He will soon go to an Islamic country, hat in hand, to apologize to the Muslim world and he will be welcomed as one of their own.

OBAMA'S DIVINITY
Am I the only one in this country that noticed Barak's use of the word "ascendancy" this week. Sort of like Jesus or Mary. IMPRESSIVE!!! He has not lost it and, talk about Blago's narcissism. It must be these corn and bean fields.

I recall George W Bush stating he would be a domestic, not international, President, as Obama is gearing up for. This should be interesting. Seems like any Government leader who denies the PRIMARY importance of a global society is naive and should be recognized as such. I am still remembering Barak stating he is not in any way thinking about or ready for the Presidency, when asked by our Press after just becoming our Junior Senator...only about four years ago. He did not even know his way around the Capitol Building at that point. He was and still is, correct.

He is President only thanks to the stupidity of the voting Public. Paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson: "democracy cannot survive without an educated, informed Public."

He is right and if we survive this, it is only because of what Jefferson et al provided us, not cause of what Barak Hussein has capitulated to.

Yes, but...
I think Obama has the energy to keep a very activist eye on the "back burner" issues, especially our relations with others. He's planning or writing a major speech to a Muslim country and the world. If so, this is good. Foreign and domestic are so intertwined nowadays. Obama is nothing if not a good linstener, and he will stay up late listening, being, as I said--and as the article argues--an activist par excellence, perhaps especially, to challenge even Lincoln, on foreign policy reform. (He wants to make a difference in the world, as many of us do, for the better, for the ages. And his bully pulpit, given his character and bacground, is arguably the most influential ever.)

How Can Obama Be a "Transformer"?
I'm more than curious to understand how people who voted for Obama believe he is capable of transforming anything? He's never held a leadership position, doesn't understand (like most of our Congress - Hello!) the business world, finance, banking, investments, savings, trade, manufacturing, healthcare, energy exploration, or I would venture, the Constitution. Doesn't the ability to foster change rest on a thorough understanding of the thing to be changed? I guess people ignore that fact while they are swept up in the historicness of the historic victory of this historic Black man's history. :)

I posit true racial equality will come when Americans understand a Black man can screw up just as well as anyone else who has occupied the White House. Naturally being too difficult a truth to accept, weak Americans will just deny it.

Charles is Right, Again!
Mr. K, once again, thank you for your totally on target commentary. After reading thru the other comments, I do believe Roy from WV should be on the next Presidential ballot. THEN this economy would be turned around and POSITIVE CHANGE would take place in this country.

Scare tehe heck out of me ...
Mr. Krauthammer. Your article / analysis scares the heck out of me. If near factual, the USA is in for terrible financial times and future generations will be bankrupt trying to pay for Obama's and the liberal Democrats plans! I am 67 and probably will not ever see & feel the impact of this. HOwever, what about my children and grandchildren, etc.?

Bring it on!
When times are tight, the common sense thing to do is reduce spending.

If BO and the Dem Congress want to govern contrary to common sense, I say let them. A good general doesn't prevent the enemy from injuring themselves.

Will it be painful to most Americans? Yep. But it is through pain that the most profound lessons are learned.

Signed,
John Galt

No delusions.
For 60 years, Conservatives have been fighting a war, but their battles are limited to slowing down, not ending or reversing, the tide of secular social democracy.

For 60 years, the Federal Government has grown in scope and in size, assuming ever more financial and administrative power at the expense of the states. Social conservatives have watched the country transform itself. Women are now fully integrated into the work place. Contraception is an accepted practice. Those of Europeon descent have embraced it, as they no longer have enough children to replace themselves. Instead, they leave that up to immigrants and illegals to have the number of children necessary to expand the population. They win three "Gay Marraige" initiatives, but lose 3 ballot resolutions to ban abortion save in cases of rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is threatened. They win the small battle, yet lose the larger one.

The tide has carried both fiscal and social conservatives with it. They have no hope of returning to a world of strong and viable marraiges, reducing the size and scope of the central government nor returning to the principals of a Republican form of government.

I routinely read how the American people were "fooled" by Obama.

I disagree. They got exactly what they wanted. They wanted increased health care, a foreign policy that is less aggressive than Bush's, and someone that would not change the trajectory on woman's rights, contraception, and abortion. And that is what they got.

Even if we should return the GOP to power, it will only serve to fine tune the excesses of whatever Obama does. If he takes three steps to the left, then they will move us one step back to the right. But we will be two steps further to the left than we were before he took office. That is what we've seen for 60 years.

Small correction for Michael, AR
Is wasn't the commies who gave us Realpolitik, although they practiced it. It was Bismarck, the Iron Duke. Kissinger, another German, was a proponent of Realpolitik (which is a german term)as well. The USA should try realpolitik (acting in one's own interests) for a while, and bring our troops home from some of the 242 countries they are now in. BTW, I don't include Iraq and Afghanistan because I think we are advancing our interests there. Darfur, Rwanda, Sudan....no.

TRANSFORM ORDINARY AMERICANS?
Ordinary Americans are the only citizens that actually 'work' for a living and pay taxes. We get 'transformed' and NOBODY will be working. Or else, barrys grand plan of 'Change' will have EVERBODY 'working' for the government.
Sound familiar? Didn't the Soviet Union try that? Testing their youth to determine their 'careers of service' to their government.
And didn't this Soviet Union 'mindset' of domestic policy 'fail'? Even with it's competitive motivation to be the Worlds 'Super Power'. Looks like, Russia will get another go around to be the Worlds 'Super Power', for our American government no longer has that competitive motivation. But, China does!
And TIME is on both their sides.

Where To?
I wonder how many of you that voted for President elect Obama have paid attention to what is going on in Europe. You really should take a look and see what an "Obama like" vision has done to blur culture and Nationalism. The EU is showing signs of economic collapse and they don't spend anywhere near what we do for our first responsibility (Military). They depend on us to keep the bad boys at bay (albeit not an easy job).

The GOP is Not Change nor Conservative
As Charle's point out, Obama's policies are an extension of the policies of the current president. Federal spending increased by 80% over the last 8 years, and the deficits expanded by over $4 trillion - and almost doubled. Then, a bill passed with the number $700 billion, and we also watched the Federal Reserve Board pump $100's of billions more into the financial system. So much money, in fact, that none of can even keep track. And all of this was done under the leadership of a GOP president, and for six years, under the leadership of a GOP Congress. The conservative premise of fiscal responsibility and small government was completely undermined.

When we've quickly run up well over $4 trillion in new debt, what's another $1 trillion - or $2 trillion? The numbers are meaningless.

Conservatives can bitterly denounce plans to create some form of universal health care. Yet, it has been coming for decades. First Medicare, then Medicaid, then the Drug Entitlement Act, and now - we'll cover whoever is left out. Three steps down - one to go.

And we'll do it, because all the political stars are aligning. The business community and their lobbyists, the AMA, and the Insurance Industry are now routinely meeting to support - not to undermine, such a plan. Combine that with solid majority public support - and it's only a matter of time.

Those that believe that the GOP will recover it's senses are deluding themselves. Since when, after all, has any party gotten rid of programs once they were enacted? Answer - they don't.

The GOP moved left over the last decade. If they should recover some of their power - it will not be because they move the government back to the left, it will only be because they propose to make more "efficient" whatever the Democrats do. But the programs will stay.

jaymay
Legislation may be based on morality but apparently our politicians and the heads of failing companies don't understand the meaning of the word. The saddest and most dangerous aspect of America's deterioration is the amount and severity of criminals in high places. Just because they hook their pinkie when they hoist a tea cup doesn't cleanse them of what they are...2 bit hoodlums who live in the uppers echelons of America and find new and better ways to rake in the dough, illegally.

Dancing Bear
Bush is the reason we have NOT had an attack like Mumbai in this country since 9/11. You may hate him, but your a** is intact because of him.

Too much, and nothing at stake
Government workers, elected officials, are absent from risk. The have not vested interest in Social Security or Medicare. Most, if not all, have plans different than the common citizen, who they rape and rob to pay for their mistakes. Put everybody into the Social Security program and Medicare. Term limits and limit appointments. When everyone has a stake in this country, they will care about the tomorrows.

Dr. Douglas
You'd better start reading the newspaper a bit more carefully. We are so far past one trillion dollars, we could almost walk to Mars on its paper trail.

I hope your right.
I sincerely hope your correct. I hope he uses all those centrist to cover the hard left turn this country truly needs. It would be a dream to live in a country that invest in its citizens and not transnational corporations.

IS LIBERAL CALIFORNIA THE TIP OF THE ICE
BERG...The Historian

Have you looked at the list of pork included in the money to be spent? Bike paths...etc? We are already on our way to lacking only the Pacific at our state lines.

Legislating morality
I wish folks would think twice before blithely saying "You cannot legislate morality." ALL legislation is BASED on morality...what is right and fair, and what is wrong, that is morality. What you cannot legislate is the mind of man...are we going to behave morally, or immorally, legally or illegally, all personal decisions.

Cat - tent cities?
Maybe, if Obummer, Peelousy, & Reed pass all the commie, nanny state baloney they've been talking about. But that'll give them an excuse to fund tent makers.

I don't think you can rightly say Bush drove us into the ground, as the seven previous years have been quite excellent for me personally (Thank you, tax cuts) and all of my friends. Lay off the BDS koolaid a little and try to be somewhat objective. Congress appropriates the money and where to spend it. The Pres simply signs the bills, which more or less put W in the same situation as Reagan - accept the bad to get the good.

Ron Paul? He sounds great until he gets to national security, where he runs right off the cliff. I don't care how constitutional or economically sound he is on everything else; if he can't embrace the primary and most important duty of the C in C - protect and defend the USA - he isn't worth a second look.

Great column, Charles. Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or whatever.

Saul Alinsky boy will be in for a shock.
Barry "Blago" Hussein, will be in for quite a shock. The right of center backlash hasn't even begun to kick into gear. It will and Barry will feel it.

True Americans are not gonna let this skinny, social agitator with a huge ego transform our country.

Backlash a brewin'........

"W" had his daddy's
entire administration. "W" failed in ALL his ventures. I knew he'd drive America into the ground just like all of his previous businesses. Obambi isn't going to 'change' anything, he's part of the problem. Americans always get exactly what they vote for and appoint, I don't know why we get upset. How come we never step out on the limb and vote for real 'change?' Like Ron Paul? No one even takes people with conservative ideas seriously, it's all about the suit and shoes. You thought "W" was an empty suit? Wait a few months when you start to see that Obambi can't make snap decisions, he has to ruminate over a simple question, that's a great approach for a professor but not a leader of a country. Notice how it takes him a couple of days to address any concerns. He's a lightweight playing in heavyweight competition. It's not going to be fun, welcome back to tent cities.

good for goose is good for gander
Krauthammer adored Bush administration's foreign policy commitment to "change the world".

He gorged at the neocon trough.

Halfbaked, illconceived neocon meddling in mideast societies, invasions of nations in grotesque experiments designed to see if Islam and democracy were compatible, certainly embody a "change the world" mindset.

But when Obama wants to "change the world" in a direction on domestic policy that Krauthammer finds objectionable, why, the whole concept of changing the world suddenly becomes recklessly radical.

Even Krauthammer is forced to concede on domestic spending and government intrusion on the markeplace, the "Emperor has no clothes", that Bush can "out-liberal" almost any liberal.

Which really should come as no surprise, inasmuch as neocon meddling on foreign affairs(hallmark of Bush administration)is nothing more than nanny-state liberal meddling on domestic affairs, applied abroad.

Two sides of the same coin.

Thank you CK: Here's your next topic!!
To Dancing Bear: Bush is not a traitor. Pelosi and Reid decided 2 years ago to make Bush irrelevant for domestic policy, and they have as their power permits. Congress has done nothing to improve anything with respect to taxation, spending, anything!
TO Chas Krauthammer: Thank you again. You're again just about dead-on. How about if you follow up to point out something extremely frightening that essentially no one realizes? Obama's economic platform including the issues you mentioned and a half dozen others, are EXACTLY the platform of the Communist Party USA. See cpusa.org for proof. They are Capitalism-haters, and apparently Obama's action credo fits their desires perfedtly. Read for yourself. I was uttterly amazed but not at all surprised, because I've known for the entire year starting with the debates that Obama and the Democrats will do nothing to help our Capitalism prosper and strengthen. They'll do the opposite. Liberal Democrats have become, perhaps unaware of it, Communist Party USA adherents.

Man the barracades

We need to triage and fight every Bailout and every "investment". He will take over the economy and the malaise will deepen.

I for one will fight both the Fairness Doctrine and other permanent damage BUT also this fiscal insanity.

The emporor has no clothes and I'm committed to revealing that.

Bush is a traitor
A Republican administration set this up for him, as CR reports. Bush is one of the worst fiends to have occupied the White House. He has further confused the public re the meaning of conservatism.

And he did this for his OWN aggrandizement, just as his father raised taxes.

But we the Republicans are so blinded by abortion ideology that we lost our minds and nominated him.

Deserving justly what we got, once we forgot you cannot legislate morality.

Good luck surviving Lord Obama (at least financially). And thanks so much, George. May you rest in state in the Kremlin. Give me Clinton back any day.

Excellent Analysis
Excellent analysis by Charles Krauthammer. I had been pondering the appointments because as I read Obama, he does not intend to govern from the center but from the Left. What Charles Krauthammer provides is an analysis of how the centrist appearing appointments work to serve Obama's leftist intentions.

Obama Might Have Gotten Away With It....
Were it not for the huge promises already made. There is a mountain of debt, trillions in unfunded liabilities and the government is quickly moving to borrow even more trillions from the future to fund public works and green jobs that will not pay back the investment.

All of this flows from a complete misunderstanding of the way the world really works. They think they can direct it all with a top down, command economy structure. When unemployment rises and the dollar drops through the floor what will they be left with? We have given away our freedom and the result will be years of misery.

Krauthammer is right
The domestic agenda...is Obama's agenda.

And former Soviets, Eastern Europeans, Cubans, Chinese and the North Koreans...are living testaments to where that agenda will inevitably wind up.

No matter how many times it is tried and fails, the masses will latch-on to collectivist ideas with eyes wide shut. Even in the most prosperous nation in the history of the world, where our Welfare recipients have a better lifestyle than 75% of the world's population and where our average Joe; with no special skills, talents or abilities, are afforded a way of life that is unimaginable to most others around the world.

And now we want "change". And we're definitely going to get it. We're going to throw it all away to follow a fairy tale...led by a fake Rolex.

We're damned amazing people.

Krauthammer's fearmongering

Krauthammer tries to claim that Obama will exploit the financial situation to push his non-centrist (i.e., liberal) agenda. Krauthammer's proposed one-trillion dollar stimulus package is sheer speculation and runs far beyond most estimates. The idea that Obama has a compliant congress is absurd. Republicans will go out of their way to block every decent proposal, especially those that favor the little guys (e.g., autoworkers). This kind of obstructionism is of course exactly the goal of Krauthammer's fear mongering.

Things Are Looking Up.
Here at Townhall, things are looking up. Brian ID, Jack NC, even pb WA and jono64a FL, excellent comments; while Beau CA forgets we always have, "The Night of the Generals" to keep things from getting too out of hand.

The article by Krauthammer? A little not to subtle fear-mongering, I think.

There is one thing the commies gave the world: realpolitic, and that is pretty much what Brian and Jack are saying.

Krauthammer is using the other thing the commies gave the world: agitprop.

In fact, the Krauthammers of TH keep this up, and we can do without them.

FDR kept on getting re-elected ...
although his constant intervention prolongued the Depression. But he could blame everything on Hoover years after Hoover was history. We are now seeing the last days of another Hoover-like big-spending tariff-signing RINO president.

After FDR won, the GOP all became Dem-lite, and were in the minority in Congress for decades. Count on the current crop of Republicans to do the same thing, unfortunately--they are not called the Stupid Party for nothing.

He's in over his head.
But they all are.
I suspect that within months of taking office he'll look more like Clinton than FDR -- winging it; doing fund-raisers; and delighting the press with gas-bag speeches. If the country is to be fixed, it'll do so itself. With even half a brain, he'll know to just get out of the way. That is, if he wants to be re-elected -- and I'm sure he is already contemplating 2012.

Rest Assure, Obama Is Not Centrist
This article is right on. Obama will buffer his agenda from any disruptions from outside the US borders. He is a community organizer and will concentrate on changing the face of America. The real Obama will surcafe with his second tier appointments of mid-level implementers, and judges. Most people do not understand the principles of radicals because this is the first time one has been president. Second tier "soldiers" is where policy gets implemented, and look out!! This is articulated in Saul Alinsky's book and in everyone of Obama's books. Second, manufactures crisis are "smoke screens" and diversions from what's really going on. Be afraid my friends. American voters made a big, big mistake. Obama must cut spending some where to pay for all of his social programs or he is faced with three undesirable options. (1) raise taxes, (2) print money, (3) borrow (from whom?.

Changing America--Go Slow!!!
I'm older than dirt, retired, don't owe anybody a dime and I'm not sure I want to see Obama's grandiose scheme of "change"!!
If advocating getting a job, sometimes two jobs, minding ur own business and expecting very little help from anyone is Mr O's idea of Change--RIGHT ON!!
But I said I was Old not STUPID and I'm pretty sure that is NOT the plan..I won't surrender that EASILY so this shud be interesting!!CHEERS!!

Obama's Presidency
Well Charles, I'm not so sure your reading our boy Barry correctly. He's a pragmatist to be sure, and this could explain all of the centrist appointments, but he is also very new to all of this and very unsure of himself in many key areas. He absolutely needs these people to get the job done. The country's economic problems go very deep, and I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. The next two years will be very difficult for Obama and he will be simply trying to keep one step ahead of things. In short, his plate will be full, leaving little time for his grand schemes. His election mandate will fade quickly under these conditions. He has two years before a smarter, stronger Republican party emerges, which could stop him in his tracks.

Obama is a radical
(1) Obama had no people of his own to bring to Washington (at least any that would not be under indictment), so he HAD to select Clinton people. So this is not an indication that he is moderating.

(2) Obama's chosen associations and his own words reveal his radicalism. A far left liberal ideologue is what he is.

I personally think that he will as quietly as possible do some serious liberal damage to the Constitution in regards to health care, abortion, etc.

Obama's dreams
I have read quite a bit on both sides of the argument about how Obama is going to govern, and I am not totally convinced even he knows. From the time he sprang onto the national stage two years ago, he has been the epitome of pragmatism. Nothing has been too large, or sacred, to "throw under the bus" if it seemed to imperil his chances to gain the Presidency. Does that mean he has no guiding star other than power, or that he is truly an astute politician, one of the most stellar practitioners of rhetorical chicanery in modern history? By the way, I do not mean the forgoing in a positive light. Obama is not a typical liberal, in that he is not wedded to any one tenet of the liberal cause, except abortion, and even then there was no real challenge to call him on it(the partial birth fiasco ran more on whether he lied, not the substance of what he was espousing). Facd with an enraged electorate, I think he would have thrown his opposition to the "born-alive" bill under the bus too. So what does this have the do with Charles' column? Just that Obama has dreams, but when they meet reality, as his "withdraw from Iraq immediately!" met the NSA daily briefings, the dreams change to pragmatism. His vision of America is probably not that shared by most TH readers, but his ability to effectively Change what he Hoped to...? Pragmatically, it's not gonna happen.

Obama's Job
I think this is the ultimate job for a community organizer...the ultimate community to organize...the entire United States. I think Limbaugh is right, Obama wants to BE President, not Do President. Similar ideas didn't work for FDR,I do not think they will work for BHO!
