What would you rather watch?

Barack Obama gave a speech that his disciples compared favorably to the Gettysburg Address and the Sermon on the Mount, but which I thought came a lot closer to Richard Nixon’s “Checkers” speech, a desperate attempt to keep himself from being relegated to the trash heap of history.

Coming in the wake, as it did, of all we had come to know about Rev. Jeremiah Wright, I thought Obama’s speech was far too little and much too late. Say, 20 years too late.

Frankly, I’m surprised that so many people, and not just liberals, were so willing to give Obama a pass. It’s one thing, after all, for this half-white fellow to join the Trinity United Church of (a Black) Christ in order to use it as a launching pad into Chicago’s scummy political scene. That’s just playing the game. But when one not only sticks around for two decades, but has the creep perform your wedding ceremony and baptize your daughters, and you then bring those children into church to listen to this demagogue damn our country and vilify white people, I really don’t understand why everyone isn’t as disgusted with Mr. Obama as I am.

The junior senator from Illinois first campaigned on the premise that he’s the one person who can put racial differences behind us, but when it’s discovered that he’s joined at the hip with Louis Farrakhan’s best friend, insists that he’s ready to engage in an honest dialogue on race. Well, I don’t believe he is, but I am. What’s more, I’m sure it’s not the dialogue he has in mind, which is just more of the same old dump-on-whitey bilge that Jesse Jackson, Charles Rangel, Maxine Waters and Al Sharpton, have been spewing out for so many long and profitable years.

It was back in 1964 that the Civil Rights Act was passed. In the intervening 44 years, this country has spent billions of dollars to compensate people who hadn’t suffered from Jim Crow laws for the simple reason that they hadn’t even been born yet. Be that as it may, the government continues to fund Operation Head Start; continues to use Affirmative Action as a means by which to leap-frog underachieving black students over, in most cases, better-qualified Asian students; and continues to favor black-owned businesses with low interest loans. But it’s never enough and God knows there’s no end in sight.

You’d like an honest dialogue about race relations, Sen. Obama? As Jack Nicholson’s Col. Jessep yelled at Tom Cruise’s Lt. Kaffee in “A Few Good Men”: “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!”

The truth is, in America, anyone with brains, grit and self-discipline, can rise to unimaginable heights. But of course, a guy with a racist agenda, a con man like Jeremiah Wright, won’t tell you that. No, instead he uses his bully pulpit to insist that we honkies cooked up the HIV virus as a means to exterminate black people. Believe me, if we had extermination in mind, we wouldn’t have come up with anything that fancy. Why would we invent a disease that would infect whites as well as blacks? And we surely wouldn’t be blowing our tax dollars to combat the disease in Africa.

If we were a racist society, Oprah Winfrey, your fairy godmother, certainly wouldn’t be a billionaire; she’d be fetching someone’s mint julep. And Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice wouldn’t grow up to be secretaries of state; they’d be sweeping out the stables. And Will Smith and Denzel Washington wouldn’t be movie stars; they’d be in the fields picking cotton .

I don’t claim to speak for all white Americans, only for myself. But, personally, I think it stinks that there’s even a single black American who has the gall to blame white Americans for the troubles that continue to plague black communities in 2008. I mean, how is a 70% illegitimacy rate the fault of white people? How is the fact that young black men are more likely to wind up with a rap sheet than with a college degree our fault? Too many blacks, in and out of politics, get away with claiming that whites are the only racists in America because only whites have political power. But how is it that we all agree that the Ku Klux Klan is a racist organization although, aside from Robert Byrd (D), no Klan member holds high elected office? And how is it that, in this allegedly racist society, there are any number of black congressmen, governors, mayors, police chiefs and even a black United States senator?

By the way, how is it that if whites are the racists, there is far more black on white crime than white on black? Far, far more. It’s not even close.

This isn’t to suggest that we whites are blameless. Some of us are innocent, but surely not the members of the Democratic party. You’ll never hear one of their politicians utter an unpleasant truth about black underachievement. They’re quite happy to pay off black ministers at election time to extend their blessings and their pulpits to any hack with a (D) after his name. Their favorite pastime, though, is tossing tax dollars away on black so-called entitlements, otherwise known as bribes. After all, it’s not their money and they wind up with 90% of the plantation votes in their pocket.

I, myself, wouldn’t mind at all voting for a black president. In fact, it wasn’t that long ago that I was quite prepared to vote for General Colin Powell when it appeared he might make a run for the White House. And, frankly, I think a cabinet filled with people such as Shelby Steele, Walter Williams, Ward Connerly and Thomas Sowell, would be as good as it gets.

The sad irony of Obama’s candidacy is that so many white Americans are convinced that by voting for a black racist they’re proving how wonderfully tolerant they are. All they really prove is how childish and naïve some people are, whatever their age.

By sitting in that pew for 20 long years, soaking up Rev. Wright’s poison, Obama convinced me he’s as big a race hustler as Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. The only real difference I see is that he doesn’t shout, try to sound like Algonquin J. Calhoun or insist on giving speeches that rhyme.

Oh, how I long for the good old days when the worst thing that anyone could say about Barack Hussein Obama is that, down deep, he might really be a Muslim!

Those lazy shiftless blacks
Burt really nailed it this time. If those lazy blacks had an ounce of grit and self discipline, we would never have had to have the civil rights act 100 years after they were supposedly freed and made citizens.

All the Jim Crow laws haven't kept any white american from succeeding. Its those lazy blacks. Segregation didn't keep white americans down. We just have more grit and determination.

Don Imus isn't a racist and neither is Burt: much.

I get tired of hearing about black victimization, but then some fool like Burt comes along.

You nailed it, Burt, with teeth
I long ago cast off my undeserved white guilt. It's amazing how that act improved my vision and cleared my head.

If we were to flip the Obama/Wright relationship and envision a Republican presidential candidate who had a 20 year relationship with Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church (the haters who protest at soldiers' funerals, can you imagine the justified social and media firestorm that would ensue?

Why should Obama get a pass when he adopts as a surrogate father, an America-hating racist?

Bleeding heart, get a transfusion
The blood flow to your atrophied brain is dwindling.
Get a clue. By allowing blacks to continue to blame their failures on whitey, you aid and abet their continued self-destructive behavior.

Bleeding Heart has a lot of nerve
Bleeding Heart Liberal concludes his ignorant post with: "...but then some fool like Burt comes along." He's got a lot of nerve calling someone else a fool.

BHL is emblematic of the modern Democratic Party; they are the Party of racists and bigots projecting their own character flaws on conservatives and Republicans.

Ann Coulter has a book entitled "If Democrats had any Brains They Would be Republicans". It has become painfully clear that "if African-Americans had any brains THEY would be Republicans".

Of course, the blacks with brains already are Republicans.

Until most of the liberals
can come to the logical way of thinking as Burt has done in this column there will be a divide. O'Vomit has been a member of the race hustler class since he went to school. Going to church where the pastor preached hate whitey was in perfect character for him, especially since he wished to be elected by the hate whitey class.

O'Vomit says that there needs to be a dialog about race and that whitey doesn't understand. No Mr. O'Vomit we understand perfectly. It is far easier to drop out of school and let government support you and your one parent household families. That is what the hate whitey class of blacks is all about.

As for "affirmative action" I think we can safely say that it is on the wane. Sandra Day O’Flipflop in her last address from the court said that it could not continue forever. The LAW says that there shall be no discrimination based on race. That is pretty easy to understand but, like the second amendment, the liberals were able to turn it around to mean that discrimination against whites was ok. The current court in its rulings have pretty much decided that “can not continue forever” is actually now. The rationale for violating the law was that it was needed to address past discrimination. As Burt said, there has been no government discrimination since 1964. We have had 44 years to address past discrimination.

I have no guilt period.---
Excellent as usual. My grandparents came here from Norway and Russia and had to work through all the tough times that the rest of the legal immigrants had to. The went through discrimination and got over it, raised large families on their own, never took any hand outs and worked like hell to make sure their kids did likewise. They had nothing to do with slavery.

To the whiners and takers out there, get over it, quit complaining, and do the best you can.
We don't owe you a thing.....

Being of Scots-Irish ancestry
and also being the keeper of the Family History I know that some of my ancestors and their progeny arrived here and did things that were less than honorable. Some, I'm fairly sure even owned slaves.

BUT THAT WAS THEM, and that was A LONG TIME AGO. I AM NOT in the least responsible for what they did, nor do I have ANY guilt about it.
There is nothing I can do to change the history of my family so why should I feel any guilt? THEY did these things, not me. Their sins are on them, and I'm sure that they have already, or will, pay for it.

All of that said. I am so damned sick of all of the whining and crying of race-baiting blacks that want us "evil whiteys" to pay forever for the sins of our fathers.

WELL THIS WHITE MAN WILL NOT DO IT.
ANYONE who calls me a racist for daring to point out that ALL people who are living in poverty due to their own fault, regardless of their skin color, but mostly blacks, is in for a fight.

I know that the race card is used as a weapon by Democrats and race hustlers like Al Sharpton and the Reverend JACKsssssssooonnn and others like them to silence those who don't go along with their agenda, but IT WILL NEVER work on me.

So don't try to tell me that Obama is any less a racist bigot and race baiter than Rev. Wright. You're only lying to yourself if you believe that crap.

OOooooh that Racism Bogeyman again
quoth Burt: "The truth is, in America, anyone with brains, grit and self-discipline, can rise to unimaginable heights."

Proven by Oprah Winfrey, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Jordon, Kenneth Chenault, George Johnson, Clarence Otis Jr., Sylvia Rhone, Colin Powell, Condaleeza Rice, Clarence Thomas,

etc. etc. etc.

And, yes, even Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Charles Rangel, Maxine Waters and Barack Obama; one of whom may well be our next president.

And let's not forget how blacks in America, taken apart as if a separate country, would be the 16th wealthiest country on the planet. Not too shabby for only 13% of the population.

I'm still trying to figure out how all this White Racism stuff is supposed to work in the 21st century. I know that, somehow, Whitey is Keeping the Black Man down. But, with all these black success stories, it appears Whitey isn't very good at it.

Don't join the middle class
This is the teaching of Mr. Wright that is the most telling of all. Like a cult leader, he limits the association and relationships of his followers, and here, even admits that anyone can join the middle class. But he forbids it. He is a segregationalist.

Let the voters decide. 5 for the Audacity of Burt.

Grand Slam
Thank you Burt. One reason I believe your articles are so utterly fantastic is you are able to put the thoughts of many to words. Unfortunately, what you said in your article is so politically charged that the liberals will just ignore it and keep their respective heads in the sand. (See Bleeding Heart Liberal above)

The irony here is that Obama's and Wright's actions promote racism and division rather than encourage either to end. The more I hear about Obama the less I like him. He is a race-baiter radical in sheeps clothing.

Middle Class?
Of course not, he is getting a 1.6 million dollar house as part of his retirement. That begs the question of what he was getting for salary. He was just like JJ and Sharpton. I guess race baiting hate whitey pays pretty good. Why settle for middlke class when you can be in the top 1%.

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/03/27/obamas-former-pasto r-builds-a-multimillion-dollar-retirement-home/

Hey, I'm not the only one!
And here I thought I was the only one who remembered Algonquin J. Calhoun. Just another reason I'm one of Burt's greatest fans. (Does anyone remember Mr. Martin Dooley either?) Anyway, I swear, every time I hear one of these black preachers layin' it on hot & heavy, like that clown Wright, all I see in my mind's eye is Algonquin J. Calhoun down at the police station or the courthouse, trying to extricate the Kingfish from his latest jam, as he so often did. Him or Andrew H. Brown. The resemblance to Calhoun is amazing.

It's the social pathology, stupid!
Here's what the demographic data show: Within 5 years of arriving in the U.S., black immigrants have average higher incomes than the average American. Black women with college degrees have higher average incomes than white women with college degrees. Black Ph.Ds of either sex have higher average incomes than white Ph.Ds.

Among 2-parent families where both parents: graduated high school, don't abuse drugs or alcohol, avoid criminal conviction, wait until they graduate high school to have children, and the primary breadwinner shows up consistently for work, there is no income difference between whites and blacks. The achievement bar is set pretty low.

Is it really difficult to figure out that anyone (white, black, you-pick-the-color) that is addicted to crack, in prison, or won't hold a job just might have a lower income? Social pathology, not racism, is the cause of black underachievement. As Britney Spears might say, it's not rocket surgery! :0)

To culpeperson
The only visceral hatred going on here is black on black and black on white. It has been many years since I marched with the blacks in their struggle for equality back in the 60's. I have long ago gotten wise to the Jesse Jacksssssssssons' of this world who have bastardized M. L. King Jr.'s message for their own personal gain. The last thing that King would have wanted (according to his own words) is that preferential treatment be given to anyone according to the color of their skin, rather they be judged by the content of their character and their abilities.

Any white person who still feel guilt over the treatement of black slaves over 200 years ago is trying to assuage his/her own guilt about their feeelings toward black people.

As a previous post by tweaky said so truthfully, any black with brains is doing well in this country and any black with brains is NOT a democrat.

GunnyG
It's good to see you back.

How was the vacation?

And 8 stars to Burt. What can you add to this?

And to Culpeperson:

"Other immigrants such as Mexicans, Indians as dark as coal,Jews, Russians don't get the hatred thrown at them as black folks yet we were the ones that were once enslaved."

Why is it that when the topic of slavery comes up there is never no mention of the fact that the slaves were sold by their own families? Why is it that there isn't any mention that the slave trade was thriving in Africa?

Why is JJ and Al not over in Africa trying to end slavery today as it still exists? Would it be because they can not shake down anyone in the government over there?

Would it because if they WERE to go and try to end slavery they just may end up as slaves themselves, never to be heard from again in the U.S.

Come to think of it. Maybe we can take up a "love" offering and help pay their airfare.

Culperson;
How old are you anyhow? That cr*p has been gone for a long time. Most, but not all of the racial strife thes days is stirred by the likes of Wright, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and God-knows how many more like them.That's how they make their living. And a fine living it is. They can't afford racial harmony. It's not my fault that young black girls can't keep their knees together. It's called personal responsibility, and it is sorely lacking in black America.

Can't we all just get along?
.

Funny .....
Keyes and Steele were too 'White'.
Fact is that most of us really don't care how much he hates us white folk. He can if he so desires. Can he do the job. In this election I'm looking for the guy who is the least 'Red' ..
and the differences at some points are marginal amongst these 'Notice Me Control Freaks'.
If he awoke every morning and announced he loathed white people but would honor the constitution .... I'd vote for him. T'ain't the case, even the White Guy is anti-American.

Get Along???
Get along??? Get ALONG???!!! Are you kidding??? We can't even have an HONEST DISCUSSION because we can't use HONEST WORDS like those written by Mr Prelutsky. For one side, the words "honest discussion" mean: "It is impossible for me to be a racist because I am a minority and you need to agree with me that you are a white racist pig."

I can
think of no other race in the world that embraces victimhood with the tenacity of the fortunate black citizens of the United States.

Burt, I congratulate you on your righteous anger, your amazing ability to wordsmith, and your willingness to put it all out there.

Obama's Cabinet, Ambassadors, etc
Jesse Jackson, Charles Rangel, Maxine Waters, Sharpton, Wright, Farrakahn, Schumer, Richardson, Oprah, Jefferson (money in freezer) etc.?

Culpeperson
And another thing:

Part I

I was born and raised in the south. My grandfather was one of the most successful farmers in the county where I live. Back in the 50's, yes the 50's, there was this black family that lived next to grandpa's farm. They worked for my grandfather (not as slaves) and were like extended family to my grandfather, grandmother and mother. This particular black family had a few children.

My mother was quite young then and was about the same age as their children. When it came time to "pick the crops" both families shared in the harvest. Both families canned vegetables together. My mother would often eat at their house with them as they would often eat at the grandparent's house too.

They were like one big family. And would be today if they were all still alive.

I never thought of them as "the black family" as I thought of them as [enter their names here]. They were hard working and they raised their children to grow up and work for a living. To work for what they had. And their kids turned out pretty good. None of them would have ever thought of going to the welfare office just because they could. They are productive members of society.

My family is not a "hate all blacks" family. And when my grandfather passed away back in 1981 the cemetary was about 15 miles from the chapel where his funeral was held. I will never forget the number of Black men that were stopped on the side of the road during the funeral procession, standing outside of their cars, with their hats or hands held over their hearts as the hurst passed by. A few were even dressed in coats and ties.

Culpeperson

Part II

Now 27 years later can you say that you would see JJ, Al or J Wright ( I refuse to put "Rev" in front of his name) doing the same for some honky?? I don't think so. I was born in the early 60's and all my life I have always heard of how the KKK was BAD.

But the democrats, black and white alike, continue to reelect Robert "Sheets" Byrd, (D) to office. Now why is that I ask you? Had David Duke had a (D) behind his name I suspect that even he would have been elected to office by the democrats.

Maybe if God had not been taken out of the public schools and taken out of the public domain as it has been we wouldn't have to have people such as JJ, Al and J Wright.

Playing the race card
In Obama's speech, he talked about a national dialogue concerning race. He's not interested in a national dialogue, all he did was move us away from door #1 - Rev. Wright, and have us focus on door #2 - Racism in America.

Look at us, we're all talking about race now, instead of Obama's judgement as well as his perspective.

Ironic isn't it. We're all talking about race, but where is Obama in the discussion? Not a peep about the race dialogue.

Truth is, Obama played the biggest race card of this election cycle and it worked.

Great article
Michael Brown wrote, "...Obama played the biggest race card of this election cycle and it worked."

Obama may have played it, like a "smooooooth" Neo-race hustler (i.e. without the fire-'n'-brimstone of earlier jerks), but THIS TIME AROUND, I am confident it will NOT work.

In upping the ante with religion, he suggested that whites' "Original Sin" could only be "absolved" through paying for "racial indulgences" (more social programs to benefit blacks only) from the self-appointed "Pope Obama I."

This divisive, arrogant approach, while not new, is NOT going to be overlooked this time.

Burt
being a "typical WHITE person", I also am totally disgusted with the racist that is running for the Whitehouse!
To add to the racism that abounds this swine, throw in the non-hand over the heart and the non-wearing lapel pin of the Flag of our country and you have not only a racist, but a very non-american one to boot.
1000 stars on this one Burt!
The truth is very painful sometimes!

Culpeperson
Please explain to me how I am responsible for keeping any blacks down. My father left me nothing except some tools so I sure didn't prosper from an inheritance from the days of slavery. I have worked all my life and EARNED everything I have. I stayed with my wife and children and never accepted welfare. If you want to talk about my ancestry I have people from my lineage that fought for the north and the south but what does that have to do with me? I have never told anyone they weren't welcome in my house or not welcome to my table because of race. Can you say the same? If so, we could probably be friends.

Jeez, Burt!!
As soon as I powered up this morning, I heard the sound of a "SLAP", and had to investigate. I found its origin within the words you typed this morning!!

I must agree with SSGT, this man's credo of "unity" does not fit the definition I find in my dictionary.

There are not enough stars in the heavens, Burt!!!

;-)

Culpepers[on
You are shamelessly ignorant of the past in this country in suggesting that Mexican, Indians or Jews were not persecuted for their ethnicity.
AAMOF, Americans Indians in the American Southwest were once called ni@@ers.

BTW you missed the Irish, Poles, Italians, and Germans and Japanese during WWII.

My Militant Leftist Parent's Opinion
My folks are finally speaking to me, their conservative daughter, again. I broached the subject very gingerly about Pastor Wright and their thoughts.

To my dismay, which I knew was coming anyway talking to them, was their rationalizations for Wright's sermons.

They were not shocked or bothered by what he said. In fact they quickly replied, "Oh, all Christians are like that..."

I said that is not Christianity, that is Black Radical Theology. They defended Wright by claiming all Christians and evangelicals spew all sorts of crazy things, as if they were telling me, "Meh...everyone spills milk once in awhile."

Then they went onto talk about the evil mormons and Christians...

I changed the subject and spoke about a vacation I'm taking to Door County, Wisconsin, I place I absolutely love and have been there over 10 times in my life, and if I could, I would live there.

My father, who has never been there, told me I as a Jew would not be welcomed there. I laughed and asked why he thought this. His reply, "How many churches do they have?! You can't go into those rural areas without being attacked by Christians!"

I told him I've been there nearly dozens of times, everyone is welcoming and fantastic (and I'm not speaking of the vendors but the locals) and I know for a fact they are nothing like what he says.

He said, "You don't know...you'll see."

They are truly idiots.

Geraldine Ferraro and Burt are both...
...right about Obama.

Without black victimization and white guilt Barack wouldn't even be considered for the highest office in the free world.

Burt says he reads responses
To his columns, I hope he reads this one. Today is the 40th anniversary of the King assassination. Despite the fact that column after column here fixates on race, there is not a single tribute, let alone mere mention of the milestone.

Burt, you and other columnists had an excellent opportunity to hi-lite the remarkable gains American blacks have made in a single generation, and yet you succumb to the rhetoric of black victimization.

The bias and dearth of perspective on the pages of TH is shameful.

Bman III
Correction re your 7:11 post.The Gunny that posted is not the infamous GunnyG.

Take up B.Obama's Gauntlet
This is another protected by the media Socialist/Communist! He is a stumbling speaker
when answering unrehearsed questions.
The United States is approximately 55% socialist
and he has been selected to change that to 80%
Socialist/Communist in 4 - 8 years!
This educated boob is required by fellow travelers to now do what Bill Clinton and George Bush (try as they may) did not accomplish because of their own character flaws. Naftya, cafta etc,The North american union is not 100% implemented. You have to ask yourself: Why has Geotge Bush signed a pact with Canada authorizing Canadian soldiers to come into the U.S. and vice versa, to put down insurrection etc.
GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Burt
Excellent column.Wheres Lilly?

bryce
First off, good morning to you.

Just want to let you know, I just watched a wonderful tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on our local station. He is still an inspiration to me, and my family.

Speaking for myself, I like to celebrate his LIFE, and his many accomplishments in its short span, than his death. I would hope others would do the same.

Hatred for Obama?
After reading Krauthammer, Juan Williams, and this fool, it's become plainly obvious that Republicans have a completely distorted view of who Obama is. Burt couldn't possibly have seen or read Obama's speech and write this astonishingly foolish column.

Did you see this part of the speech?

"But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. They weren't simply a religious leader's effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country - a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America..."

You must have missed that part, right Burt?

And how about this part:

"That has been my experience at Trinity. Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety - the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity's services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America."

Check out that line about "shocking ignorance". Might he be referring to the AIDS line?

Seems to me that Obama is practicing that great Christian ethic of love the sinner, hate the sin. maybe you haven't heard that one before? Or maybe you have, but are your heart and mind have grown too hard to understand such deep spirituality?

Phylo out

BHL
BHL can't handle the truth.

Then again, none of the sanctimonious class (aka "bleeding heart liberals") actually perceive reality, only grasping whatever makes them feel superior.

As Unca Alby wrote, given the success of the Oprahs, Powells, etc., apparently whites aren't very good at keepin' the black man down.

Interesting

Clarence Thomas, Condelezza Rice, Colin Powell, Michael Steele.. All success stories, in spite of rough times. How come they get so much grief from liberals and other blacks?

Wheres Obama?
McCain, Kennedy, And Clinton are in Memphis Tenn. paying their respects to Dr. King. Obama is in N. Dakota after votes. What's that tell you? Like Waldo people are asking Where's Obama?!!!

Who's more moral Burt, or Obama?
Question Burt: Is it possible to love and admire someone who occasionally says some outrageous things? I would suggest that, if it isn't, you need to disassociate yourself with about 80% of the Republican Party.

From Obama's speech:

"And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions - the good and the bad - of the community that he has served diligently for so many years."

Clearly it didn't explain anything for you Burt. So I assume that you believe he is lying when he says that in his private conversations, he has never heard Dr. Wright say derogatory things about white people. But that says more about you than it does about Obama. Obama has demonstrated that he is the kind of man who is inclined to take people at their word, and to bend over backwards to give people the benefit of the doubt. In this regard, Obama has proven himself to be a morally superior human being to you, Burt Prelutsky.

Phylo out

Man Thats bunk!!!If your wallet is stolen and someone tells you that I did it but I say I didn't, are you going to take me at my word? If you do you are such a mark!!!! If the man preaches it day in and day out, don't pull my shirt over my head and say he doesn't believe that way every other day of the week and hasn't talked like that to BO. I like a LOT of others are not that naieve.

Phylo Out of His Mind Writes:

In this regard, Obama has proven himself to be a morally superior human being to you, Burt Prelutsky.

Phylo out

I suspect that if a white pastor had made the same comments about blacks, you'd be screaming for his head on a silver platter.

Just because a person may treat a few individuals with respect, does not mean that person may not make racist generalizations about the entire ethnic group.

Phylo out of touch
Obama clearly honors the man that hates whites. In addition he uses his non-public grandmother as moral equivalence (typical lib tactic). What more do you need? A few bricks to fall on your head? You're surely short a few.

that Mountain top and asks, "Are we there yet"? ...all
we have to say is, "We've come a long way, but we

I'm guessing you missed this part of Obama's speech as well. he might as well have been speaking directly to you. You seem to believe that we should ignore race altogether "Hey, come on black people, get over it already!"

Obama: "But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America - to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality."

Isn't this what you're doing Burt? Simplifying and amplifying the negative to the point that it distorts reality? Are you really doing your part to bridge the racial divide in this country? Or are you just pretending there is no divide?

Phylo out.

And Burt, you seem to have a little difficulty understand why blacks in this country might still have some anger toward this country. You seem to believe that, once civil rights legislation passed, all should've been forgiven and forgotten the very next day.

Obama: We need to remind ourselves that so many of the disparities that exist in the African-American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow.

Segregated schools were, and are, inferior schools; we still haven't fixed them, fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, and the inferior education they provided, then and now, helps explain the pervasive achievement gap between today's black and white students.

Legalized discrimination - where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to African-American business owners, or black homeowners could not access FHA mortgages, or blacks were excluded from unions, or the police force, or fire departments - meant that black families could not amass any meaningful wealth to bequeath to future generations. That history helps explain the wealth and income gap between black and white, and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persists in so many of today's urban and rural communities."

to be continued

Looks like ...
... we're having a dialog on race.

To continue from Obama's speech:

A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one's family, contributed to the erosion of black families - a problem that welfare policies for many years may have worsened. And the lack of basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods - parks for kids to play in, police walking the beat, regular garbage pick-up and building code enforcement - all helped create a cycle of violence, blight and neglect that continue to haunt us.

This is the reality in which Reverend Wright and other African-Americans of his generation grew up. They came of age in the late fifties and early sixties, a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted. What's remarkable is not how many failed in the face of discrimination, but rather how many men and women overcame the odds; how many were able to make a way out of no way for those like me who would come after them.

not so black and white
I see mostly comments of, blacks have only themselves to blame. Or, there is nothing but racism. I work with a guy who is black, he's smarter than probably everyone there, including me, but he does not get promoted and will not. He can get above it, he's smart enough, but there is racism keeping him from rising where he is. He will have to move on to another company that rewards skill. He doesn't hate America. He doesn't blame anyone. Life isn't fair. That's the way it is, you work with it, or you whine about it.
Obama is the whine about it type.

Phylo
Why didn't he say Wright made a mistake lumping all whites in one group as racists? Maybe because he believes it himself?

it is all the fault of.....
continue to point fingers, keep the Rev. Wright issue front and center, because if the conservatives look in the mirror they will realize that for the first time in (5) five years the new applications for unemployment is at an all time high. Do not focus on the real issues, like jobs going overseas. OF course not the pundits, talking heads jobs, because then who would be left to divide the country. Who would be left to hide and distract the rest of the Americans from seeing the real damage this Administration has brought on this country.

Go ahead, talk about everyday until November, then maybe we won't see how much the conservatives lack in judgement to even choose a candidate that even Dems would cross over and vote for. Go Ahead, America.

to continue from Obama's speech

"But for all those who scratched and clawed their way to get a piece of the American Dream, there were many who didn't make it - those who were ultimately defeated, in one way or another, by discrimination. That legacy of defeat was passed on to future generations - those young men and increasingly young women who we see standing on street corners or languishing in our prisons, without hope or prospects for the future. Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their worldview in fundamental ways. For the men and women of Reverend Wright's generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years. That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or around the kitchen table. At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a politician's own failings."

That last line there... see that Burt? He's condemning people like Sharpton and Jackson. Don't you get that you fool?

to continue from Obama's speech:

"And occasionally it (the anger) finds voice in the church on Sunday morning, in the pulpit and in the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning. That anger is not always productive; indeed, all too often it distracts attention from solving real problems; it keeps us from squarely facing our own complicity in our condition, and prevents the African-American community from forging the alliances it needs to bring about real change. But the anger is real; it is powerful; and to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races."

Do you see the part where Obama says that the anger isn't productive because it distracts from our own complicity in our condition? Does that sound like a guy who is blaming whitey for all of the problems in the black community?

And how about that last part Burt. Isn't that precisely what you're doing Burt? Simply wishing it away without understanding it's roots? Aren't you, in this utterly foolish column, widening the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races?

Judging by the anger and vitriol I've seen towards Obama and black churches on this website, I'd say that that is exactly what you are doing.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself Burt. Playing to the fears and prejudices of the worst aspects of the Republican base may win you some friends, but are they really the types of friends you want?

Think about it.

Taking Up Obama's Gauntlet
Obama's own racism is barely below the surface. I think he hates his mother because he was boorn black and is hell bent on making all whites suffer for ever after. If you read his books you know this is true. He is the last person you can ever call a uniter. He brings up the race card regularily when ever he sees that it is to his advantage. He could possibly be the most dangerous person in America. And true to form all of our elected representativesa and the media are falling into line behind him as they do not want feel his imposed guilt on them for being white, or to challenge any of his BS or invented experiences, because he is black.

Clarence Thomas, Condelezza Rice, Colin Powell, Michael Steele.. All success stories, in spite of rough times. How come they get so much grief from liberals and other blacks?

Because you see since they try to play by the rules and integrate into society as Americans, and not take the stance of antiAmerican blame whitey for everything defeatists, then they are relegated to "Uncle Toms" or "Condescheeza" by the wrights, sharptons, jacksons, and apparently pflagers of this country

I suppose you would have said the same thing during Jim Crow and slavery. Geeze black people, quit you're whining. Life isn't fair, so deal with it.

And please explain to us all where you think Obama was whining about anything. I can guarantee that you will not be able to find a quote that supports your baseless assertion.

are you inferring that things said by Wright were by accident? That the preacher of his church for the past 20 years is ignorant beyond belief? Obama is a smooth speaker and actions speak louder than words my friend.

I'll try again. Where does he come out and say it's wrong???

Where's Obama????

Hmmm, well Hitler never said explicitly (at least that we know of) to put Jews in the gaschambers. Stop being an apologist for this obvious racist; you're just demostrating your agreement with his views (are you suing a white person now because obviously it's someone white who got you so hooked on drugs that you say the dumbest things?)

Phylo Se Fiser
I would not argue that blacks have suffered. I remember as a child asking my father why blacks had their own water fountain at Sears. I even took a drink to see what would happen.

My question to you "what is the virtue that has helped many blacks to overcome and be successful?"

How can that virtue be transmitted to ALL Americans?

Phylo -- The answer to your inquiry:

Who's more moral Burt or Obama?

Burt has my vote.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Burt:
Great column!
"By sitting in that pew for 20 long years, soaking up Rev. Wright’s poison, Obama convinced me he’s as big a race hustler as Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson."
Even if Obama never heard one sermon, the church bulletin was rife with racial invective and it's no wonder Michelle hasn't felt good about our nation for her entire adult life. One need look no further than the source of their spiritual 'enlightenment.'
Phylo
Phylo: this is in response to my statement that Obama has demonstrated that he is the kind of man who takes people at their word.
I should have added "unless he is given good reason to believe otherwise." Happy?
Now ask yourself this, If the man preaches this day in and day out, as you unquestioningly assume, why haven't we seen more examples of him saying such things? Why is it confined to these two or three? Don't you find that a little curious? Ask yourself, is it possible that what we've heard are not typical of the man's sermons? is it possible that you have formed an inaccurate image of the Pastor based on his worst moments? Then ask your self: Is it fair to make such sweeping and unyielding judgments of a man based on so little information? Would you like it if the whole world judged you based on you at your worst moments?
Bond slaves
Anyone who does genealogy knows that there were WHITE slaves in America at the beginnings of our country. They were called BOND SLAVES.
Why is it we don't hear about the descendants of those white bond slaves asking for reparations too?
Phylo ought to be ashamed of himself
Hey Phylo,
If Obama is the Change candidate, why couldn't he change his pastor's or his churches attitudes about whitey? He and his wife are perfect examples of what ANYONE in this country, regardless of color, can accomplish if they are willing to WORK for it.
Sadly, he chose to sit quietly for 20 years instead of confronting the tired blame whitey rhetoric that doesn't cut it in 2008. If blacks want to blame anyone, they need to blame their leaders (grifters) and look in the mirror. It's not a color problem, it's a culture problem and until blacks begin to look forward instead of the living in the past, this pathetic blame whitey cycle will never end. So again, in 20 years he couldn't even transcend race within his own church, how is he going to heal America?
Phylo
I'm surprised I have to answer that but did we have a half-black man who says he's black running for POTUS say two years ago? Again, why didn't BO say he was wrong in what he said instead of beating around the bush?
Where's Obama?
Great column!
The trouble is blacks don't want to be judged by the color of their skin unless it suits their purposes, but they do want to judge everyone by the color of their skin. The rules change daily depending on the time and circumstances. Liberals can scream we are racists but the reality is we are viewing Wright and Obama with the same standards applied across the board. No one should be allowed to get away with this behavior no matter what their skin color or political stripe.
I have been discriminated against by blacks. Does that mean I should hate all blacks? Nope, but I am not very happy with those that treated me badly. I hold the individual responsible, not the race, even when it is done in the name of race.
bryce
Why in the heck would we want to celebrate a murder?
Typical liberal melodrama.
soft bigotry of low expectations
By ignoring the societal ills in the black community, Democrats perpetuate the very poverty and violence they claim to be against. The DNC has become the worst of racist organizations by blaming all the (wrong) usual characters for black misery instead of trying to work on the real issues. Many blacks are trapped by the Rev Wright, Sharpton and Jacksons of the world into believing there is no way out except through government help. Talk about modern slavery.
Prelutski does not feign punches. He's a straight shooter and a great writer. "Talking up Obama's Gauntlet" was well done and is all true. There is no reason for Americans to have to listen to a man so far out of touch as Obama.
I did not see even a trace of Lincoln or my Savior in anything he said, and that's because he was duplicitous in his logic. In fact, I take it as an affront to all mankind to compare him in this way.
The Democrats know better, but they are no better than Barak. At this point they are merely carrying his water, hoping to get someone in office they can control. Boy, are they in for a surprise.
Obama's purpose was to answer legitimate questions about his own patriotism and he proceeded to gas us with nonsense rhetoric and take back-hand slaps at white people. He looks more like a traitor every time he speaks. When they do his DNA or genealogy they will find that he is more Saudi than African black...and what does that tell you? It tells me he is a black Muslim looking for a kingdom to rule not a patriotic American.
That is what Obama said.
Obama said that when he said in such a country
he wouldn't be able to run for president
"You’ll never hear one of their politicians [Dems] utter an unpleasant truth about black underachievement."
Obama does. It is in the speech you refer to.
It is usually a prerequisite to have a working
Phylo
Your post to pinto was quite the leap in logic. Your problem is you make too many assumptions and substitute it for facts.
My question to you is if Wright were a conservative saying all of those same things and supporting a conservative candidate would you still be making excuses for him? Liberals are pretty transparent on this issue.
You cannot combat racism with more racism and until this country learns that, no matter who is running for office, or what color their skin is, racism will continue it's existence.
yes we can dude
Your problem is that you have all sorts of false assumptions about that church. I read a story the other day, published in the Chicago Tribune, about a white man who has been a member of Trinity for 25 years. (Yes, they have white members) He was engaged to a black woman. The woman started having doubts about getting married because she was an up and coming leader in the black community. Dr. Wright took her aside and counseled her for four hours about marriage and about why race shouldn't be an issue. They ended up getting married just a few months later.
Does that sound like a guy who hates white people?
Now, if that doesn't fit with the image you have in your head about Dr. Wright, might I suggest that the image in your head might be wrong, or, at the very least, incomplete?
And why can't you take Obama at his word that, in all of his private conversations, he never heard Dr. Wright say anything against any race, and he never saw him mistreat any white people with whom he so frequently interacts? Why do you feel justified in assuming that Obama is lying about that? he has demonstrated that he is a man of honor, who does not lie and takes responsibility for his own actions.
Obama has demonstrated that he is the kind of man who takes people at their word until his given good reason not to. So I guess, in that regard, Obama is a morally superior human being to you.
Burt vs Obama
Gee I wonder which speech on race will be remembered by people fifty years from now. LOL.
It's amazing to contrast the tone and tenor of Burts speech on race, and Obama's:
Obama's speech is thoughtful, respectful, gentle and encourages each side of the divide to try and see things from the other's perspective.
Burt's is shallow, disrespectful (calling Dr. Wright a "creep", and saying Obama is "disgusting"), mean-spirited, and basically says that whites are right and blacks need to get over it already, those ungrateful bastards!
In a match of morality and intellect, Obama beats Burt hands down.
read the speech!
Here's Obama from the speech:
"The profound mistake of Reverend Wright’s sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made; as if this country – a country that has made it possible for one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black; Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old — is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past."
That is what Obama said.
I do have a problem with the esteemed Rev. Wright and his church. He's no better than Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, playing the blame game to benefit himself. I'm sure you know about his 1.6M retirement mansion right in the middle of a whitey community. You'd think he'd want to live near his church so he could continue to help his congregation and community. Nope. He got the money and he's GONE!
A bitter pill to swallow
Coming to the site today I genuinely expected to see a columnist take advantage of the 40th anniversary of King's death to reach out and try to bridge some of these divides instead of laying more landmines. I confess to being bitterly, bitterly disappointed at the lack of any tribute here.
So, since today's TH columnists won't do it it I will.
To conservatives, while my animus towards Bush is great, I appauld him for being more race neutral in his appointments than any president in recent history. On that score he has set a great example.
ps...Cal Thomas did write a great tribute the other day. I'd recommend checking it out.
More quotes from the speech for Joe
Here's Obama:
"Ironically, this quintessentially American – and yes, conservative – notion of self-help found frequent expression in Reverend Wright’s sermons. But what my former pastor too often failed to understand is that embarking on a program of self-help also requires a belief that society can change."
"But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality."
"But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam."
Confederate Memorial Day
I see Bryce is still complaining because Burt did not do a column about MLK. The question I have is why? MLK has a holiday and it is a full day. George Washington only has half a day shared with Lincoln. H*ll, the entire month of February is dedicated to black this and black that. Now you want to have another celebration in April?
I think since Feb has been taken over we need to have a new Federal Holiday on April 26 called Confederate memorial Day. We can make t5he month of April Confederate History Month and have a month long celebration of all things confederate.
Phylo: SPARE ME
“Question Burt: Is it possible to love and admire someone who occasionally says some outrageous things?”
Spare me. I think that you are pontificating to the wrong crowd. Speaking as a minimally franchised white male whose 1st career ended abruptly after being anonymously accused of making an “outrageous” racial remark I have very little sympathy for Mr. Obama & Rev. Wright. I was never allowed to face my accuser, nor was I told was it was that I said that so offensive to my unknown accuser. I was forced to resign because of an unsubstantiated accusation. My experience is actually quite common.
I am currently firmly established in my 2nd career, a world-class Subject matter Expert (SME) in a rather arcane scientific discipline & my previous experiences have forced me to minimize my interactions w/ various members of government sanctioned “victim groups” out of survival- much to their detriment in terms of professional development. That is the downside to this wonderful brave new world of “multi-culturalism” where certain minority/female “children” (e.g., Dr. Nancy Hopkins) have a constitutional right to be free from being OFFENDED by the big, bad white male.
It might dawn on Mr. Obama and Rev. Wright that they are experiencing just what its like to be a minimally-franchised white man in a anti-white, post-civil rights era. Apparently everyone should be held equally accountable for saying “outrageous things”. The education is good for them.
Additionally, like 80% of all principled “Progressives”, you’re probably fully ensconced in the “to each according to her needs” column of the great socialist equation. How does your overt entitlement mentality grant you moral superiority?
BHL: Really?
Don Imus isn't a racist and neither is Burt: much.
Really? The tender sensibilities of a group of “tattooed” young toughs would hardly be affected by an insensitive comment like the one made by Imus. Perhaps Imus was unconsciously commenting about the apparent LACK OF ETHNIC/RACIAL DIVERSITY in the Rutgers University women’s basketball program. This is ironic because Rutgers actively employs affirmative action/quotas IOT maintain the properly racial representation in its student. Unfortunately, like most college sports favored by hyphenated-Americans, quotas IOT maintain proper racial representation doesn’t apply. I doubt that there is one legitimate student (e.g., Engineering,) on that entire team. But let’s apply the same logic elsewhere:
What did the DUKE UNIVERSITY THREE (3) do to provoke CRYSTAL GAIL MANGUM into falsely accusing them of rape & assault? Their LIVES have nearly been RUINED. Oh, that’s different; they were WHITE, MALE & INTELLIGENT.
Unlike the Rutger’s women’s basketball team, the DUKE lacrosse team was unfairly slandered & libeled. Their coach had to resign in disgrace. Members of the “Black studies” (i.e., mental masturbation) profession characterized the actions of the DUKE 3 as being “racial terrorists.” Where are the public apologies from all the Female-Chauvinists who convicted the DUKE 3 in the forum of public opinion on TV ? Where are the apologies from the Women-children standing enmasse outside a "DUKE lacrosse house" and shouting profanity and making verbal threats in the interest of extorting confessions from the guilty evil males? Oh. I’m sorry, that’s different. Minimally franchise white males aren’t entitled to DIGNITY as individuals.
religiouslib classic straw man
define: straw man argument
"A straw man argument is a logical fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position."
religiouslib's straw man:
"are burt and conservatives claiming that there is no racism against blacks and the playing field is level?"
Really? where does Burt say this. Who Said there is no racism?
religiouslib's straw man continued:
"because that is just factually wrong."
Who is arguing this? Just you, stop wasting our time with stupid arguments. If you created this argument on purpose you are just playing politics and shouldn't be taken seriously. If you truly believe this then you need to re-analyze the paradigm you have created for yourself.
Obama Is Doing A Good Job
He has single handedly put racist, violent, redneck, black culture on parade. Whites are running from the racist Democratic party. There can be racial healing only when the Democratic party turns its back on the anti-white racist blacks and white liberals.
It doesn't appear this will happen anytime soon. No more breaks for reprobate blacks.
Everyones
That still only says that he made a mistake, not that he was wrong. that could mean anything including that he made a mistake saying it when he did. you guys try to make him seem like the second coming of MLK and he doesn't come up to his boot straps in fighting race disparity. As to that:
Where's Obama today? Where should he be?
religiouslib: Culturalism
Yes racism still exists. But it has been stigmatized in mainstream society (i.e., White) to the point of being the moral equivalent of pedophilia.
However, you are citing an example of “culturalism”, i.e., one could make that same argument that said names are indicative a certain self-destructive “sub-culture.”
Try going through life w/ a "bill of attainder" hanging over your head in the form of “institutionalized racism”, e.g., anti-white male Affirmative Action/quotas. Additionally, you might be interested to know that Caribbean/West-Indian (YES, of AFRICAN decent) immigrants, sharing the same cultural precepts of hard work, discipline and education as their Asian counterparts, do extremely well in our supposedly “racist” society. General Colin Powell is a fine example.
Reality: If you don’t understand that today’s Hyphenated-American’s are victims of their own stupid behavior (i.e., 70% illegitimacy rate, 70% urban school drop out rate, 25% prison incarceration rate , pro-violence subculture, etc.) more often than they are victims of overt “residual racism”, you don’t understand anything. If you don’t understand the reason why so many hyphenated-Americans would rather throw their whole energies at protesting isolated incidents of “injustice” (e.g., Rev Wright & his “Government invented AIDS” statement) you don’t know anything. Why do they do this? Because it conveniently distracts them from having to deal w/ the aforementioned pathologies that are actually destroying peoples lives.
yes we can .. overcome lib fascism
I think you nailed it. I am sure Wright is not a bad guy overall. He simply used certain rhetoric that he knew would work in marketing his product and now it is becoming a liability to one of his parishioners. That the parishioner in question has used the same marketing campaign in his field justifies the results.
SSGT
Good job of holding down the fort for Gray Ghost.
Born & Raised as a Visible Minority
and find the term repulsive, the civil rights movement passe and am damned sick and tired of pandering to this sorry whiner group, Whites included, who assail us with Martin Luther King every year on a non stop guilt trip......... and want a man mentored by the likes of Jeremiah Wright.
Enough Already!!!
Anyone who wants to be repulsed even more should read Michelle Robinson Obama's senior thesis, what a load of whining CRAP.
And there's people who want this woman as First Lady, you gotta be kidding. The epitome of ingratitude and she's just now PROUD?
But the crowd will roar.........YOU GO GIRL>>>>>>
To which I say, go to Liberia.
Phylo
I meant to ask you a question earlier! Are you proud of Mr Steele?
Part II
Affirmative action, the entitlement that sticks so thoroughly in cracker craws, is racist. How does it feel to be on the short end of entitlement? While you are jumping up and down gleefully screeching "he said it", I will save you the trouble. It is reverse racism. Now, why was it enacted?
History: Brown v Board, 1954. Separate but equal is not equal. In the 70s and maybe 80s, School districts were still being taken over administratively by judges who saw segregation. Why were judges taking over schools 25 and 30 years after desegregation was the law of the land?
If you "good conservatives" are correct, traditional racism stopped when it became illegal. It is no wonder you like disney films so much.
Do you want to end Affirmative action? Sue in federal court and come up with a better argument than liberals and blacks had to institute it.
Do you want to end entitlements based on race? Come up with better reasons to end them than were presented to institute them.
None of the knuckle dragging crackers I've read on this thread have the capacity to formulate a coherent argument against affirmative action other than its "reverse racism".
I know I can still pick out Willie Horton from a lineup. How many of you can pick out Wayne Dumond?
Joe and the guys
If you want Obama to make you a sandwich, he is
not going to do it.
Make your own sandwich.
What guys are you talking about?
My main argument is that Burt did not read the
speech. This is a p!ss poor column no matter which
side you are on, but especially if you're for
columnists who've done a little homework and are
not deliberately disingenuous.
bryce: MLK
“Coming to the site today I genuinely expected to see a columnist take advantage of the 40th anniversary of King's death to reach out and try to bridge some of these divides instead of laying more landmines.”
Dr. King was a man of principle & great physical courage (e.g., physical/emotional stress: despite being 39 at the time of his death, his autopsy revealed a heart of a 60 year old) who knew that because the US was fundamentally a “moral country”, he could apply the principles of Gandhi’s peaceful “civil disobedience” to right a tremendous social injustice & establish a “colorblind” society. Any other culture would have put a bullet in his head outright, e.g., Tibetans protesting the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Unfortunately, the inheritors of his legacy have taken it to the other extreme & the Rev. Wright controversy has shed light on that festering sore (e.g., black liberation theology) and sunlight is of course the best disinfectant.
Bulsh!tting Loudmouth Lib Scrawls:
None of the knuckle dragging crackers I've read on this thread have the capacity to formulate a coherent argument against affirmative action other than its "reverse racism".
Real tolerance there for people who don't think the way you do. I guess Walter Williams, J.C. Watts, Michael Steel, Star Parker and Thomas Sowell are all knuckle dragging crackers in your book. Since they have all made that argument.
Burt
A 5 star article!! Thank you for your truth!!
Obama's whereabouts
Obama will be in Pittsburgh tonight.
It seems like it will relate to the efforts of
MLK in that it aims to get out the vote and it
includes some reverends.
Joe and others, if you plan on attending it asks
that you register first.
Here's the site:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/fundraising/4rs gm
This seems like an appropriate place for Obama to be.
nanna
I loved this line to Burt:
"Thank you for your truth!"
As long as you don't say thank you for "your
facts", because everyone is entitled to their own
opinion but not their own facts. And it seems that
Burt has entitled himself to a speech by Barack on
race that no one else was entitled to.
At least, not the one I linked to earlier.
AIDS, Racism, Sexism
UnHoly Wright says that the Govt. started AIDS. Well, I don’t believe that, but even if they did, who spread AIDs to the millions of Black people? I would think the person who caught AIDS knew who the one is who gave it to them, and I bet he/she wasn’t wearing a high-hat decorated in Red, White, and Blue.
Did anyone ever make the case that the millions of Blacks with AIDS and ones with the millions of bast*rd children, and for the large part, the same people.
The old crap that a Black, can not be a racist, and woman can not be a sexist, just ain’t true. Well just read the definition of those two terms, and tell me how a Black voting for a Black just because he is Black is not racism. And how is a woman voting for a women just because she is a women is not sexism.
Yes I know, according to the liberals, they just need to remember to mention one other reason - the shape of an ear, the length fingernails that they like- when they are voting that way to excuse them from either term.
All of you ignorent liberals are just
digging the hole deeper trying to rationalize Wright and O'Vomit's actions. If you had any brains at all you would just admit that they are both race baiting facists and move on. The whole tyhing would die out if you did that.
And BHL, you and your pathetic arguments are both stupid as they can be. If we go with your logic then the civil rights act of 1964 should be repealed and we can go back to "it's ok to discriminate based on race".
Why don't you do the world a favor and get a can of gasoline, some matches, and a road to play in.
Retired geek, 11:29 AM post.
Hey, friend... how do you like the sound of crickets chirping? That is, whenever you ask a leftist a really tough question?
Do you really think that Phylo, or any other leftist poster for that matter, will ever address your questions without evasions, straw dogs, changing the subject, moral equivalences, name calling or basic childish tantrums?
And do you really think that any of these leftists would ever be willing to admit that you could indeed have a point about something?
The main reason I seldom get involved with leftists; is that the emotional component that drives their world view tragically also makes them unwilling or unable to admit that what they believe in could ever be wrong... yes, even when it causes real suffering in real people.
You may want to read that last sentence again.
But, hey... I thoroughly enjoy your insights and your posts. Happy sparring.
BHL: Name calling
"None of the knuckle dragging crackers I've read on this thread have the capacity to formulate a coherent argument against affirmative action other than its "reverse racism"."
Yes, much to the chagrin of Libertarians, Conservatives, et al, liberal fascist judges have successfully “legislated from the bench” for the past 40 years. We’re waiting for them to expire and/or retire- they’re like dinosaurs waiting for an asteroid to put them out of their misery. So what? But did you have to resort to employing a racial epithet to attack those individuals who disagree w/ you out of principle? Do you often employ name-calling invalidation techniques as a replacement for rational discourse?
Reality: I’m a Service-Academy educated Scientist & Reserve Officer who deals with subjects you could scarcely conceive of in you pathetic, myopic existence. My wife, an MD, thinks that I wasting my time debating pathology like you rather than focusing on writing a book or getting another advanced degree.
Speaking as technocratic snob, unlike most of the apolitical members of my discipline, I consistently force myself to communicate w/ marginally intelligent anthropoids like you IOT maintain some connection to the “unwashed masses” by reminding me that we somehow share a common humanity. This is where our common ground ends. For the record, I never met an intelligent, ostensible leftist in the “Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics” (STEM) disciplines. You smug, self-satisfied progressive “humanities” types can hopefully find contentment in your vast intellectual wasteland- there is nothing nuanced or original about applying the same old Marxist canard to the question of racial entitlements in perpetuity. You have my sympathy.
Past Racism Affects Today
Past racism still affects blacks today. A company in downtown Cleveland [OH] had no black men, but my [2nd income]mother quit there in 1964 to have a child. I can't believe that her income wasn't sorely envied by local black heads-of-households.
The effect of decreased buying power for these families and their offspring, while we had two incomes must certainly still be having consequences.
We MUST ADMIT THIS LINGERING EFFECT OF RACISM. However, to understand it is one thing, the use it as an excuse for lack of production today is self defeating.
I would like to see the source of the stats
• BLACK WOMEN W/COLLEGE DEGREES HAVE HIGHER AVERAGE INCOMES THAN WHITE WOMEN W/COLLEGE DEGREES.
• Black Ph.Ds of either sex have higher average incomes than white Ph.Ds.
scottK-Lolo--Ssgt-YLG-Vic-GT
My beautiful bride of 42 years usually sets me straight! She is out of town helping our younger daughter grade papers so that her and grandkids can visit us.
She admonished me before she left "When are going to understand that even though you are tolerant of others views - liberals cannot see what you are viewing - they can only see their reality - you just don't get it do you?"
I guess I need to call her and get a "fix".
BHL
The biggest argument against affirmative action is it does nothing for the persons feeling of accomplishment. Instead of a feeling of "look at what I've earned". It gives them a feeling of look at what I've been given. Not only is this the feeling that the person gets, it's the feeling that fellow workers get and even you know it!
PS Where was Obama this morning? Where should he have been? He sure wasn't in memphis honoring the man who went before him and truly championed against Racial disparity!!!!! Martin Luther King!
Bleeding Heart Liberal
I guess the fact that affirmative action/quotas promote exactly what everyone wishes to end and institutionalizes really means nothing to you?
Heck what am I saying?
The fact that the war on poverty in an utter failure that hurts the poor more then helps. most likely doesn't mean anything to you either. As long as libs can maintain their economic leash on the poor to gain votes.
The "CRINGE"
You are correct Burt! Obama is twenty years too late. His grandmother made him "cringe" when she said she was afraid of black strangers so he threw her under the bus in his speech, but nothing his Racist preacher said ever made him "cringe".
BTW, his speech was nothing more than Rev. Wright warmed over diatribe. The words were brilliantly polished and delivered with eloquence to make victimhood sound pleasing to the guilt ridden liberals.
If Obama had "cringed" at Rev. Wright's first racist sermon 20 years ago he might have stood a good chance of being president in January 2009.
Phylo
One thing you keep missing Phylo are Obama's three little words he said off the cuff which pishes on your Obama Love Letter:
"Typical White Person" quoted by Barak Hussein Obama, 2008
Swish that between your cheek and gum and tell me how that tastes? As a typical white person myself, it tastes like racist talk to me...Yummy.
Lolo1
You're right. At least we were able to approach certain subjects without them disowning me again.
At now I know based on their response that they are ObamaPods. Pretty pathetic.
Shells
"Typical White Person" quoted by Barak Hussein Obama, 2008
This simple statement, "Typical White Person", made inversed, "Typical Black Person", would automatically condemn the white person who said it as a raving racist.
This fact just bounces off lib craniums.
BHO's other famous words, "I Love White People", if said by a white person bout blacks would also automatically condemn the white person who said it as a raving racist.
BOUNCE!!!
Modmark
I think with each passing year they have gotten more narrow minded, they almost have this seething paranoia. I can't believe have the stuff that comes out of their mouths. It's sad.
We went out to dinner with my boyfriend and his mother, they are Catholic, and over dinner, my parents are spewing on and on about how the Church plans on taking over this country. They are so caught up in their propaganda, they ASSUME anyone who dines with them has to agree as well. Anyone but their daughter...
Door County. Fabulous place. If you want to get away, relax, and walk amongst a community of really sweet people and great food, that is the place. Wonderful fish boils, cherry pies, and the best malts in the world. Remember the movie Pleasantville? That is the place.
Black on Black Crime
Local Black Pastor on Black on Black Crime:
"He makes it look like I said it's the black community doing it. What I said is it's making the black community more vulnerable and they need more support and funding..."
Story from London, United Kingdom
Knight Who Say...NI!!
Love the handle, I know that movie by heart, I swear.
You are correct, and I have belabored that point over and over for each ObamaPod that suckles his speech for dear life.
If anyone said Typical Black Person, Al Sharpton and Jesse would be marching and hollering for blood, our jobs, and our heads.
DANG!
This is one of the best and energetic rebuttals to Barack Obama's Philly speech that I have yet heard. Senator Obama's speech was geared to 1968 America, during a period when many whites gladly subjugated their black brothers and sisters. But today? In 2008? With the great strides blacks have made to enter into the highest professions and the loftiest levels of government, we're still supposed to believe that the system is rigged to keep the "colored folks" in their place? Please, this just strains credulity. I think Burt has tapped into what a lot of whites are thinking and feeling when they're made to feel shame about our past of nearly two centuries ago and about our alleged present-day role in discriminating and mistreating blacks. We're tired of it, it's not true and it's wrong. Obama could have defused this whole thing by taking responsibility for his poor pastor/church choices, but he didn't he forgave his preacher and he indicted white Americans...I'm quite sure HE thinks he made the right decision.
Barack Obama on crime
"Of the country's 14,860 homicide victims in 2005, 7,125 were black, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. And of the 3,289 cases that year in which a single black was killed by a single assailant, the FBI says, 91% of the killers were black." USA Today
-------------------------------------------------
CREATING EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL
"Barack Obama believes that it’s not enough to be “tough on crime” – we have to be tough and
smart.
African Americans make up approximately 50 percent of the nation’s homicide victims.
Barack Obama will work to improve the quality of our nation’s public defenders by creating loan-forgiveness programs for law students who enter this field."
Obama -Just Another Typical Liberal Hack
For political gain, Obama joined Wright's church to give him the credibility and buoyancy for Illinois power and office. For 20 years, that association served him well: He is a powerful US Senator from Illinois!
Now, he has a problem. In order to become a viable candidate for president, he has to make a choice: 1. TRUTH -- Admitting that he used Wright's name, friendship, influence, church and parishioners for political gain; 2. Or,LIE -- pretending to be a dunce and did not know Wright's darker side.
He chose the lie, knowing that Democrats prefer the lie over truth. It will work with them, all right - heck, they drink Kool Aide for breakfast, such as the political slogans of "Bush Lied People Died", "Impeach Bush", "Bring Troops Home, Now", all promised by the new Congress for votes. They got the votes, but forgot the disengenuous promises.
However, I doubt Obama's disengenuous lie will work so well with the election tilting "undecideds" that nearly always float Right in presidential elections. Thank goodness!
obama's schedule
elj,
you must not know how to use a search engine.
Obama was in Fort Wayne this morning:
"While his campaign schedule took him away from Memphis for ceremonies honoring Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama paid tribute today to the slain civil rights leader.
After asking voters in Fort Wayne, Ind., for a moment of silence to mark what he called "a tragic anniversary," Obama said that Americans today should remember that when he was killed, King was in Memphis to stand up for struggling sanitation workers.
In the civil rights movement, where King, "a modern-day Moses," pointed the way for ordinary people, the struggle for racial justice and economic justice were intertwined, Obama said.
"Each was part of a larger struggle for freedom," he said."
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2 008/04/obama_pays_trib.html
lemme see if i got this right
1) rev. wright spends 20 years or so giving racist "sermons" to his enraptured followers, including.
2) one of his followers runs for president
3) film or whatever of the rev. doing his 'hate America' dance suddenly appears on you-tube or whatever it's called
4) serious damage is possible to the campaign of the rev's follower
5) the follower goes on the tube and gives a speech about race
Q: Could there be a connection between items 1-4 and item 5?
A: I AM SO INSENSITIVE!!
oh poor cynical me!!!
a sign of hope?
Over the last few months or so here and at other TH sites I have been proclaiming that 'white liberal guilt' is the gift that keeps on giving.
I still believe that, but I think that it is dying off quicker than I dared hope.
Grace a Dieu
