Environmentalists' Hold on Congress

Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?



Let's face it. The average individual American has little or no clout with Congress and can be safely ignored. But it's a different story with groups such as Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club and The Nature Conservancy. When they speak, Congress listens. Unlike the average American, they are well organized, loaded with cash and well positioned to be a disobedient congressman's worse nightmare. Their political and economic success has been a near disaster for our nation.

For several decades, environmentalists have managed to get Congress to keep most of our oil resources off-limits to exploration and drilling. They've managed to have the Congress enact onerous regulations that have made refinery construction impossible. Similarly, they've used the courts and Congress to completely stymie the construction of nuclear power plants. As a result, energy prices are at historical highs and threaten our economy and national security.

What's the political response to our energy problems? It's more congressional and White House kowtowing to environmentalists, farmers and multi-billion dollar corporations such as Archer Daniels Midland. Their "solution," rather than to solve our oil supply problem by permitting drilling for the billions upon billions of barrels of oil beneath the surface of our country, is to enact the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 that mandates that oil companies increase the amount of ethanol mixed with gasoline. Anyone with an ounce of brains would have realized that diverting crops from food to fuel use would raise the prices of corn-fed livestock, such as pork, beef, chicken and dairy products, and products made from corn, such as cereals. Ethanol production has led to increases in other grain prices, such as soybean and wheat. Since the U.S. is the world's largest grain producer and exporter, higher grain prices have had a huge impact on food prices worldwide.

Congress and the environmentalists aren't through with us. If you're bothered by skyrocketing food and energy prices, wait until Congress re-introduces its environmentalist-inspired Climate Security Act, so-called "Cap and Trade." Cap and Trade is deceptively peddled as a free-market solution to the yet-to-be-settled issue of manmade climate change. Under its provisions, companies would be able to emit greenhouse gases only if they had a government allowance. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that a 15 percent cut in emissions would raise the annual average household's energy costs by $1,300. Since energy is an input to everything we use, we can expect everything to become more costly, resulting in a reduction in economic growth.

There's a hateful side to Cap and Trade that's revealed by asking the question: How will it be decided who received how much allowance to emit greenhouse gases? Congress could sell the allowances and/or give them away to favorite constituents. You can bet the rent money that a new army of lobbyists, with special pleadings, will descend on Washington to lobby Congress. And you can be sure that campaign contributions and favoritism will play an important role in the decision of who received what amount of allowances.

Much worse than that is the massive control government would have over our economy and our lives. Congress might decide that since tobacco use is unhealthy, it might not issue allowances to tobacco companies. While many Americans might applaud that, how many would like Congress to refuse to issue allowances to companies that produce foods that some people deem unhealthy such as French fries, sodas, canned soups and potato chips. Congress might deny, or threaten to deny, allowances to companies that in their opinion didn't hire enough women and minorities. The possibilities for control over our lives would be endless and could include nuisance-type edicts such a requiring us to buy a permit to barbeque in our backyard.

The thirst to wield massive control over our economy helps explain the near religious belief in manmade global warming and the attacks on scientists and others who offer contradictory evidence.

As always, Mr. Williams is spot on but he makes my head explode when he points out the problems. It's so clear but the nonsense continues.

"The thirst to wield massive control over our economy" is no big deal. That socialists crave massive control TO BENEFIT THEMSELVES PERSONALLY is the huge deal.
All the political "isms" and "archies" are B.S. designed to camouflage the steal-and-redistribute socialistic practice of person or group A trying to use the police powers of the state, via taxation, under the form of "law", to steal the labor (money, property) of person or group B.
The main problem with "something-for-nothing" steal-and-redistribute socialism is that there is no such thing as "free". There is only that which was produced (made) by the "other guy's" labor. For every "victim" who gets something for nothing, some hard working person gets nothing for something.
The the very universe itself is PER SE a survival-of-the-fittest, cause-and-effect free market.
I don't mind greenies, per se. I try to be as green as possible in my own personal habits. I like free markets, so I'm happy the corn farmers can get a higher price selling to ethanol producers. I also have no objection to vigorous discussion about energy technology progressing beyond finite fossil fuel supplies.
I just can't stand v-e-r-m-i-n, green or otherwise, trying to use the inherently evil and inevitably corrupting One-Ring police powers of the state to benefit themselves financially over everybody else (aka the "other guy"). There should be no subsidies of any kind for anybody. Let The (free market) Force that Nature iteself INHERENTLY IS govern human behavior.

Look at the earmarks
Sen. Baucus of Montana got a 5 hundred million dollar earmark for environmental programs in Montana. Half of it, or a quarter of a billion dollars is going to underwrite The Nature Conservancy buying some Plum Creek Timber lands. TNC is arguably one of the richest enviro groups in the country with real estate assets in the billions. So why do they need taxpayer dollars?

A call-in on talk radio justified his support for Democrats because they will make the rich pay his taxes. I see voters looking to the Democrat Party to give them a free ride where someone else pays for health care, food, shelter, energy, security, cable TV, etc.

So I don't care what you covered earlier. Gore created so much hype over global warming that the market demanded more for ethanol less to feed cows. Beef and other food went up as a result of Al the bore Gore's hot air.

New contract required!
America needs to elect a new group of conservatives in both houses that will review,change, or repeal all environmental laws and institute tort reform. We need to curb the power of third parties to thwart the rightful power of the democratic process. America should not jump off a cliff by following road signs posted by groups such as Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club and The Nature Conservancy.

The entire strucure,
all civil institutions in this our country are corrupt absolutely and beyond repair. A military coup is the only rational, plausible solution. Why?

A peaceful re-forming of the structures is not possible because the ruling criminal class has at its disposal enormous force, and will use it if the masses revolt. More importantly, they have on their side all the special interest groups who would kill to keep their freebies. Which means you'd likely have a prolonged extremely bloody civil war rather than a Second American Revolution.

But there aren't enough of those willing to die for . . . for what really? We shake our heads, we vent, we go on fully aware that there are no acceptable solutions, that the slide into socialism, general poverty and third world status has gathered too much speed to be stopped - except by a hard collision. In my questioning of ethanol causing third world populations starving, I was merely looking for some facts as to how ethanol has a direct connection for the increased starvation. Some provided some insightful connections (chicaree) as well as outlining the multitude of events that have caused the increase in food prices. But as REALETY would have it, I guess questioning these statements is considered "ignorant".

I think it is appropriate to say that corn demand has gone up because of increased ethanol production. And yes, corn is currently a major feedstock for livestock. Corn based ethanol is obviously not a silver bullet but it does create bi-products in Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles (DDGS) that are currently used as a substitute to corn feeding cattle and poultry. Further research is being done to substitute it into diets of swine as well.

Furthermore, a look at the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estiates show that despite the rise in corn prices, most importing countries will hold steady on their demand if not slightly increase demand for corn in the 07/08 crop year.

Third world countries have long had starving masses. The increased food prices are felt by all especially those on the lower end. But the government policies in these countries are not helping the situation either.

Actually, most of the Western More-Capitalist countries are suffering a population SHRINKAGE, except for immigration from third-world countries.

Singapore, as one ridiculous example, actually has a government sponsored dating service trying to hook people up so they'll get married and make babies.

There are numerous explanations for all of these less-than-replacement reproduction rates, but one of the most prominent is the wealth created by capitalism. People seem less eager to reproduce in More-Capitalist systems than in Less-Capitalist ones.

So it would seem that, even in the realm of over-population problems and determining whatever level the planet can support, the socialists are STILL wrong.

The one message that must be sent this Nov is money will buy you nothing but a ticket home. If you don't vote for drilling-nuclear-refineries, fencing-rounding up-documenting illegals/employers and an end to this propaganda on global warming including stopping the ethynol scam, you're out. If they can use the internet/msm to get us Oblaba/McLame we can use it to run em out of Washington. Whose with me?

I don't know many left wing extremist environmentalists(and I doubt you do either) so I can't comment on their wishes for children to die.

But your comment does beg the question,

What level of population can the planet withstand while continuing to provide a high quality of life that we enjoy in this country?

Is it possible that the people you accuse of wanting children to die are actually more concerned with the pragmatism related to poverty-stricken societies encouraging families to have 8 to 10 children?

My Mormon friends and neighbors, famous for traditionally having 8 to 10 children, now have more like 4 or 5, for pragmatic reasons. In the past, when more children meant more in house workers on the farm, now it means more mouths to feed, more gas to buy for more soccer and Little League, more college expenses and, in some cases, more taxpayer money to help support huge families.

You may find that some of your fellow conservatives are concerned with an ever increasing global population. That doesn't necessarily translate into wanting children to die, depending on your level of cynicism.

First it was oil executives, who were hauled before congressional committees, just as they are every time prices go up. Could the loons try to enforce cap and trade on home heating? Anyone who uses anything except electric might find himself shivering in the near-dark and fighting family members over extra blankets.

The left wing extremist environmental groups you mention want children to die and the population of humans on earth to be reduced to a level they think will be OK. So it is no wonder they think it is OK to buy oil from countries that pollute so we can save the world from C02 global warming and species extinctions here in America.

Left side thinkers are not logical animals and suffer from a false sense of superiority. Obama come to mind.

Third world people starving
The high cost of gas has forced up their food prices like everyone else's. The poor of the third world countries live on one or two dollars a day. No flexibility in a budget like that. your diet is restricted if you can supplement what you grow with groceries.

Ethanol from corn has also played a role. Corn is used to feed cattle and pigs. China and India economies are growing and their people now can afford more protein in their diets. A shortage of corn and demand for more protein in their diets runs up the cost.

There is a worldwide shortage of rice. A big typhoon hit Bangladesh right at rice harvest time. It totally wiped out their crop. Australia is in the grips of a 9 year drought. They are a big exporter of Rice but none was exported this year. Mynamar was also hit by a typhoon recently that killed many people plus destroyed their food stores. Thailand the worlds largest exporter of rice saw the shortage coming and held on to their harvest to feed their own people.

The mid west has had wild weather this spring and summer with torrential down pours and flooding. Farmers could not get into the fields to plant their corn crop in Iowa, Missouri indiana and Illinois. I haven't read how much that will bring down their corn harvest but up until last week Iowa was still getting 6 inch down pours that pounded the corn down. If you have lived on a farm you know the success of your crops depends on the weather.

I suspect there will be a shortage of ethanol, corn and the rice crop isn't looking much better for this year. But our population continues to skyrocket with more mouths to feed every year. 80 million people per year is added,


Environmental facists
It pains me every time I hear how environmentalists can change the course of policy in this country. They're just as bad as the religious right that tries so hard to replace the constitution with the bible. They try and guilt everybody into paying for the nice lifestyle that oil and fossil fuels have given us the past century by using fearmongerin as their chief tactic.

These people have been saying the world is going to end for decades and it's still here. It's okay to love the environment, but to force people to pay for something that may not even help is just stupid.

Currently, it takes three barrels(minimum) to make one barrel of oil from shale, yet the cry to unleash wholesale oil shale production is considered by many on these forums to be a must for future energy needs.

Even discounting that water is a precious resource in the intermountain west, would you consider ethanol and Oil shale to be scams of equal value, given the proper information?

If you want to fight the liberals you need to address them on their turf but with a better offense.
I have every members of both houses in Congress E-mail Addresses and I e-mail those I want to get a message to, wether or not they are a Republican. I even sent one to D-Ried to tell him his ramroding of the Senate would not be acceptable to the people, who wanted the drilling legeslation discussed.
Now R-Congressman John Boehner of the 8th district tells me BOEHNER NEWS ALERT: House Votes to Take 5 Week Break, Sticking You With the Gas Bill, that what is romoured is infact true about Pelosi. Her plan is take 70 million barrels of SPR oil and replace it with foreign bought heavy crude after the elections.
Tell them they can count on the birds and frogs next election but not you or your neighbor. I don't care if you voted for them or not, they don't know, but fear of losing a vote scares them more.

Here's the problem the best grain source for ethanol is corn and farmers quite correctly are switching crops from other staple crops to corn. In doing so that corn is going to make ethanol which is great for the farmer as the farmer is getting top dollar for their crops. It's kind of hard on the consumer because the staples the world depends on (well 48% of the world anyway) a large portion of that production is being switch to crops for fuel production. This is driving the price of staple crops up as the availability of those crops shrink. Which gives us the food shortages in the 3rd world. It's not that food is actually scarce it just costs more which the 3rd world countries can't afford so they have less food.

While I haven't had any dealings with the Nature Conservancy I have had dealings with the Sierra Club.

Near as I can tell the Sierra Club is only marginally better than Al Qaeda. The facts are that the organizations membership has both committed terrorist acts such as fire bombings in Palos Verdes CA and booby trapping trails in the Mojave to injure or kill motorcyclists. That very personal experience with that organization has given me the impression that it's membership is more about violence against human beings than anything having to do with conservation.

Hey Matt, if you do some research, you will see that corn is used in everything you eat, including feeding the livestock. When you see how ignorant your post is, you might remember that "it's better to remain silent and be thught a fool, then to speak and remove all doubt." There is so much information available proving the link between the ethanol scam, (it takes 2 gallons of gas to make 1 gallon of ethanol, and the more ethanol you use, the less mileage you get, BTW), and higher prices throughout the economy. If you are a fan of Dr. Williams, I know you have more intelligence then your post suggests. I guess we all have bad days, dude.

In Mexico and other latin countries food prices have skyrocketed since their main food items rely heavily on corn: tortillas, chips, cereals, breads, etc.

I am failing to see how ethanol can be blamed for an increasing amount of people starving in third world countries. Are people eating corn over there? Drinking ethanol? Something that is attributing to raising food prices is the fact that countries with large populations (like China) are experiencing a rapid increase in socio-economic status. These people are putting an increased strain on food supplies with their demand.

I think term limits would solve a lot of problems. I think Nevada just passed term limits for their state...but I think it's being appealed.

I can't understand why amendment 22 to the constitution seems sensible, presidential term limits, but we allow senators and congressmen to park themselves in Washington for a lifetime. They shouldn't be allowed to be so comfortable with power.

One of the big problems Jim, is many enviromentalist relie on junk science. They have subverted our constitution on many issues. They keep new refineries from being built by tying up the court system for years. For the most part no conservatives want to destroy our earth for christ sake. We live here as well as our children and grandchildren. I have reduced, reused, and recycled for years. I don't use fertilizers. I don't use pesticides. I've recycled newspapers for 25 years. Many conservatives do these things. You could even say it goes back to Ben Franklin...waste not want not. But none of that is either here or there. There is a balance that must be met, and much has already been done to obtain it.

However, enviromentalism has become a ploy for power and money to the detriment and death of many. So go ahead and pat yourself on a genocidial job well done. God forbid we all become like that.

Ethanol is the blame for the rise in world food prices at least in part. And we or at least I didn't blame it on farmers. I blame the enviro-nut crowd as they pushed it so much in the beginning of the Gore the bore chicken little crisis.

There is a lot of fundamental truth and agreeable fact in this article. However, I do not agree with the implied pinning the blame on farmers and their ethanol as reasons for the raise in food prices. Has anyone thought that perhaps the recent 21 straight days of increasing crude oil prices and all time highs in energy prices across the board having significant effects on the price of processing your food, delivering your food and running heating and cooling systems in these facilities?? Dr. Williams makes mention of this later in the article and it is a fact that should not be taken lightly. In fact, recent reports I have seen cite from out of the consumer dollar spent on food, 38 cents goes toward labor costs, 24 cents goes to packaging, transportation, and energy, while 19 cents goes toward the actual food cost; grain, oilseeds, etc.

Additionally, subsidizing oil with ethanol has decreased the price of gasoline at the pump, it has decreased our dependence on foreign oil, and its being gives us an energy source that we can grow out in our fields. I agree, ethanol is not the final answer, but it is an essential piece of our movement toward becoming more energy independent as a nation along with more wind and solar energy, nuclear energy and increased drilling in known areas of oil supplies.

I am confident most of Dr. Williams readers will take this critique not as an insult but a call to do your research on this topic and not just believe everything the mass media spews out. KWill S responder # 78, I have no idea where your outlandish numbers come from on using thousands of gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of ethonal. The USDA reported in 2002 that even older ethanol plants produce a gallon of ethanol on 19 gallons of water. Most technilogically advanced plants today can produce a gallon of ethanol from one to 11 gallons, with the average of 4.7 gallons to one.

Problem Identified - Solution Obscure
Another brilliant analysis Dr Williams.
It explains so many things that "just didn't make sense", especially why Republicans are trying to be "Democrat light" rather than a distinctly different (ie conservative)party. That was driving me crazy.

That said, the other, more important part of the equation, is still lacking. What is the SOLUTION? What can be done to neutralize the hold of the environmentalists on our politicians? If you have any suggestions I'm all ears.

It is very simple to correct the unwarranted "rule" of politicians. Never vote for ANY incumbent at any level of government, regardless of party affiliation or actual performance while in office. If the Congressional majority is from one party, then the President MUST be of another. Once all "professional" politicians are gone, there simply isn't enough lobbyist cash to cover ALL the "new" ones serving the public. At that point, EVERY Congressman or Senator MUST consider their LOCAL constituencies, rather than those of the national organizations that have their own lust for power agendas. Our founders were of a mind that passage of law should be an act of careful deliberation, not that of agenda-driven "managers." Otherwise, "we the people" LOSE our liberties, and gain nothing for it other than inept economic management and oppressive social ills.

Something has to be done about the power that enviros have, but I jsut do not know what, they own too many courts, and too many politicians. Look at the all out war of destruction on Richard Pombo and his attempts were not nearly strong enough to rein these people in at all.
Their power is extending inot all areas of life, partly because they have certain judges and courts that can be relied on to rule in their favor and then award them money for their "expenses".
The wolf situation in the northern rockies is a case in point, the judge ruled that "the states are too protective of the personal property rights of indiviuals" over species. The fact that there are near 10 times the number originally agreed upon makes no difference, as he said before getting the case, "I don't want wolves killed".
Individual property loss to wolves over the last 13 years has been staggering.

Seawolf, I like your idea of filing suit against Pelosi and Reid for blatantly ignoring the will of the people. Pelosi is unwilling to put he drilling legislation to a vote. That is just blatantly thumbing her nose at the voters and taxpayers. She's afraid she will lose the vote, and she will if those representatives care about re-election. She is a classic example of a little power going to someone's head. I think an impeachment would be in order except she represents San Fran, so I would guess those voters would have to do the job and good luck on that! 10% ethanol = 166,400 gallons of water.
I've read in several articles that it takes 1600 gallons of water to make one gallon of ethanol. So every time I fill up my 20 gallon gas tank I've used 3200 gallons of water. If I fill up once a week that's 52 time 3200 or 166,400 gallons of water. Of course ethanol is only 85% or so as efficient as gasoline, so I actually have to use more of it. So I am one person and I use 166k gallons of water for 10% of my fuel bill? Don't we have a potable water crisis here? Let's accelerate global warming. We need that polar ice to melt so that we can burn ethanol. How else can we keep bribing farmers to grow corn? Or starve Mexicans who eat tortillas? Or poison the Gulf of Mexico with excessive fertilizer run-off?

I think it's rather stupid to think you can't be a conservative and have environmental concerns at the same time. I support off shore drilling, as long as the rigs can't be seen from the shore. I live in Florida and tourism is a multi million dollar economy .that must be protected.
I also strongly support nuclear energy.
I am getting tired of being bad mouthed by a group of "conservatives" who constantly criticize those of us who feel the environment is important to us and to our children. There must be common ground at some point.

Both of the Democratically controlled Houses of Congress still refused President Bush's call to open up off-shore drilling. Senator Reid and House Majority Leader Pelosi quipped, "The oil companies have plenty of licenses on land they already lease".

The US needs a comprehensive energy plan including all available sources: wind, solar, geothermal, coal, nuclear, oil, and natural gas. Carbon based fuel is an essential bridge to the future of alternative sustainable energy. A release of the offshore drilling ban by the Democrat majority Congress must be accomplished. An offshore drilling poll was released by Rasmussen at noon yesterday. Forty-two (42%) percent of those polled believe that offshore drilling is most important and forty-five (45%) believe that restricting speculators is most important. Please note that these are not opposites. To say they are, which Rasmussen does, is a false dichotomy. Both can be done, but Senator Reid will not allow a vote on the offshore drilling ban because he knows that many Democrats will be politically forced to vote for drilling. Reid and Pelosi are both in the pocket of the environmentalist lobby. Their most likely action will be to allow a little drilling here or there with obstructive restrictions that will allow no production of oil. Piece meal partial lifting of the ban is a political sham and must not be accepted.

Our nation needs a complete removal of the offshore drilling moratorium akin to the lead of President Bush 15 days ago, and we need it now. Senator Kit Bond (Rep: MO) has introduced three amendments to the speculation bill that will do just that. Every day of delay by the Democrat leadership will continue to damage our economy like a car wreck in slow motion. How many days will it take and how much damage is enough for Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. We are one day closer to the day when an American will not be able to pay his heating oil bill because of Democrat obstructionism. The little known secret is that nuke plants are the least disruptive of their immediate area. In fact I've seen birds nesting near the cooling towers in winter because the waste heat makes the air a few degrees warmer. Sort of like the spotted owls that are now nested in the big red "K" of a K-Mart near Seattle, much to the annoyance of the eco-freaks.

I'd rather have more nukes than increased acid levels in trout ponds in the Adirondacks or Catskills. High sulfur coal was the cause of that. We have a century's worth of very high grade LOW sulfur coal in Utah. Too bad Billy Jeff Clinton took so much cash from the Lippo Group to lock it up as a "national park".

Random Thoughts Part Deux
When we were members of the Sierra Club we were accepted. That ended when a whole new generation of holier than anyone else elitist snobs adopted backpacking and "eco-touring" as part of their "green lifestyle". Suddenly we became the enemy within it became clear we were no longer welcome.

That is how we became so balkanized and fragmented. The hikers and kayakers NEED to learn that they have a lot more in common with hunters, anglers and canoers than with the slime who can't wait to pave over the entire Adirondack State Park (almost 30% of NY State's area) and sell it piecemeal.

There is SOME sign of change. When I encounter suburban or urban folks with my longbow or flintlock in the woods they don't seem alarmed and even curious. Dressing head to toe in blaze orange when 200 sq. inches is enough makes you look like a modern Elmer Fudd. Ditto if you are camouflaged up to you hairline with "war paint" and everything you own in Mossy Oak Breakup. That's a good pattern but get out of the camo while still IN the woods OK guys?

Carrying a walnut-stocked rifle will not alarm sensible people but even a custom tuned hunting rifle with a black Kevlar stock and stainless barrel still looks like SWAT gear to the general public. God only knows what they think of high speed cam bows with mechanical broadheads!!!

Be sensitive and this goes for the bird watchers too. I'm one of them as well and feed more birds than the Bronx zoo.

How about this to thrush out how much the Pelosi's of the world believe in "Saving the planet"?

What's worse, drilling in a barren wasteland like ANWR or in the largest wetlands in the US where the country's largest fish hatcheries are located? That's right, South Louisiana, where the oil industry has for years has been finding and producing oil for this country's needs.

If these fatcats truly were concerned with the bad things oil does to areas, why aren't they introducing bills to shut down all oil and gas activity in these wetlands?

Answer: They do not really care. It is a complete scam for political purposes.


Random Thoughts
First I thank whoever sprayed the area with moonbat repellent. Second I have NO problem with marketing bison meat. I eat it when I can. I like the higher protein/fat ratio and the lack of growth hormones and antibiotics.

Bison evolved on our plains. They are well-suited to their environment. They need little care and can be raised on grass. Lost cost IF managed properly. They should NOT be grazed on the same land as cattle due to the risk of disease though.

I used to be a Sierra Club member. In the early to late Seventies a lot of my fellow hunters were also backpackers and PRACTICAL conservationists. We were not armchair saviors of the outdoors. We carried out our unburnable debris and that of others, often long-haired maggot-infested hippie types, which we found.

Hunters and anglers have a VESTED INTEREST in keeping large areas of open land open and undeveloped. Land developers have been known to donate heavily to animal "rights" groups. Why? Because these self-annointed saviours of wildife (who see themselves as St. Zorro of the Beasts) will fight hunters and anglers tooth and nail and leave the developers alone.

The bulldozer, when used carelessly, is the bane of wild places and wildlife NOT we whose license fees finance 99.9999% of all major conservation efforts.

The same animal "rights" freaks love to move into the outer suburbs to see Bambi and Thumper play and complain when their shrubs get eaten to the ground. They live on land that USED to be prime woodlots. Small woodlots are the best small game tracts going.

When small game goes so do the raptors who fly off in search of better feeding grounds. Deer on the other hand THRIVE in "edge areas" where the woods meet yards, farms and golf courses and breed like rats.

To end lobbying
When the Constitution was still being debated, the anti-federalists were concerned about too many people represented by too few legislators. At the time, the ratio of house reps to population was about 30,000 to 1. Right now, it is closer to 750,000 to 1. When one person represents so many people, that person becomes inaccessible to anyone that doesn't have an unusual amount of influence. To permanently end lobbying, the only way would be to amend the Constitution through a state convention so that congressional lines are drawn objectively and districts are automatically split when a population in a district becomes too high.

They Won't Debate
The problem is that the radical environmentalist movements know that in a face to face debate, they would lose. They therefore will not bring the debate into the open. If Algore and the other Green Meanies debated the experts we could bring to bear on them, they would be as a Red Ryder BB gun, against a smart bomb. Therefore they go to the weakest members of congress, House and Senate, paint a sad picture, and the rest of us pay through the nose. It is much the same as with "tax the wealthy", gun bans, entitlement programs, etc. And when your dealing with intellects such as Barabar Boxer, Patty Murray, Earl Blumenhauer, Ron Wyden, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, etc., they are winning.

Some points missing:
What the great Dr. Williams failed to tell us is that the main global warming scam benefactors will be oil companies, utilities, banks, energy commodities brokers, credit brokers and environmental lawyers.

They seek control of the markets, through environmental law, to maintain their wealth and power as markets evolve. And they're forcing the markets, by law, to go their way. That's why we have the ethanol mandate; that's why we have new, even stricter air quality standards; that's why emission credit trading was created.

Anyone who really believes that the greens really care about the environment may soon awaken to a VERY rude reality. It's all about money and power. Always has been. I've been telling Dr. Williams this for years (as if he didn't know).

Where is our lobby?
It's long been a mystery to me why the environmentalist organizations are so powerful. Is it really because they are "well organized, loaded with cash and well positioned"?

Doesn't capitalism have lobbies? Not sure how "organized" the oil industry is, but it should have access to plenty of cash. Seems like it should also be well positioned considering the demand for oil. Why isn't the oil lobby a match for the environmental lobby? And not just oil. Most industries have lobbies to promote their interests, and often those interests are contrary to the extreme positions of the environmentalists.

One possible explanation: Our elected representatives and government career employees are not capitalists and don't have capitalist mentalities. They find security in government and may even fear capitalism. Just a thought.

Not a Choice, But an Echo
Walter Williams has provided an excellent description of the consequences of "cap and trade" but there is no alternative offered to this lunacy by either major political party.

McCain and Obama march in lock-step on "cap and trade". Third party candidates also offer no refuge from the Carbon Tyrants as both Barr and Nader see CO2 as a threat and Gore as a prophet. The entire congress kneels at the alter of Global Warming, paid to keep their spines supple by those who would profit from an America in chains.

There is nothing that can be done anymore to stop total control of the economy through carbon trading. The game is over, the Second Great Depression looms on the horizon and is laced with a brutal totalitarianism that will make FDR's tyranny seem benevolent by comparison.

After reading some of the posts to this article, it is becoming clear that the people really are "mad as hell and they aren't going to take it anymore." The "revolution" thing is not my style but I wonder if those in congress are aware of the growing number of those for whom it is? If it ever comes down to us or them however, color me "us." Why do most all lobbyists lobby for the wrong things? Why can't we have lobbyists that lobby for the implementation of and protection of the things that are important to the "average individual American"?

Normally I agree with your well reasoned posts. But we have already tried to reason with the enviro-nuts. We have given away inches and they have taken miles.

How long should we hold the academic idea of "civil politics" when these lobbists and politicians clearly do not hold themselves to the same standard?

We have been civil and we are met with incivility (being labelled gun-toting-Bible-thumping thugs) and restrictions (no building around field mice, no cutting trees, no news damns for hydro-electric power)that chip away at our economy and restrict our basic freedoms of choice and pursuit of happiness.

We have been polite and in return are faced with indoctrination of our children and the silencing of our voices in the political arena.

I don't think anyone realized the control that enviros have gained over our lives. Ranchers in several Rocky Mountain states are forced to deal with thousands of wolves eating hundreds of privately owned livestock and pets. Why? Because enviros want biodiversity in the wolf population.
The push for massive herds of free roaming buffalo despite brucellosis infection being passed to cattle, is never ending.
If these people are not reined in soon, we will lose a tremendous amount of our perdonal right.

Environmentalist and lobbyist
Williams unwittingly hits the nail on the head. Environmental groups are lobbyist and represent a large body of people. Then in the next paragraph he speaks decry the lobbyist that will descend on congress to decide who would get cap and trade benefits. It is lobbyist and their special interest money that runs congress. Unfortunately the environmental groups don't have big enough clout to counter oil company money with their very well endowed lobbyist plus the bezillion other lobbyist walking the halls of congress. Didn't we just see this in full action when the Lieberman /Werner bill climate change bill was voted on and defeated by congress. Polls showed that 70% of Americans want legislation to address climate change. Their interests were ignored in favor of deep pocketed oil company lobbyists. The point is that Congress defeated that bill due to the special interest money and lobbyist that works congress.. It really does not matter what the people want. That is why there is such dissatisfaction with congress right now. They are not listening.

As for drilling I am a environmentalist. But I say let em drill. It will take so long to locate and extract that oil it will have no effect on gas prices. We will have to convert to renewable energy sources whether we want to or not. But if Congress votes to subsidize that drilling there should be rioting in the streets. With their big profits and then they want to dig into a treasury that is so far in the the red their sticky fingers would but us down even further that should concern us all.



Is there no end to this madness?
Mass media and the public education system have become the weapon of choice for the murdering marxist and their drive for power and money. How in the world can any thinking person believe that man controls climate? How have we done so far controlling tropical storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, snow storms, blizzards, low pressure systems, high pressure systems, winds, rain, cyclones, typhoons, droughts, floods...

The idea that man controls "mother nature" is beyond preposterous. Carbon alone is the 4th largest element on earth. Virtually all animals/humans that breath oxygen in breathe C02 out. Plants use CO2 for photosynthesis. In other words C02 is a normal gas found in earth's atmosphere.

Have you noticed in the last 6 months/year how just about every commercial, every newscast, every show...keeps saying green. BP is now green. Valero is green. Walmart is green. SC Johnson is green. There's even a green tv channel on cable now. If this isn't mass brainwashing propaganda, I don't know what is. I feel like if I hear green, one more time, I'm gonna turn purple...

AS PT Barnum once said..."there's a sucker born every minute." Well we've reached our saturation pont with suckers.

Two pronged attack
While I do recognize the influence that the "Green Lobby" has on Washington, if Congress isn't afraid to spit in the eye of the majority of its 300 million constituents, I suspect that the green lobby isn't as powerful as many might believe.

Given however, that they do act in concert with congress to do everything possible, to, as Dr. Williams points out, gain ultimate control over the population, we the people need to fight them both.

Ironically, fighting congress will be easier than taking on the greens. Members of Congress are elected and those 300 million folks stand between them and their re-election bid. That is a powerful tool.

To attack the greens will require fighting fire with fire. They need to find themselves on the defendant side of the lawsuit. A good place to start would be to file counter suits to every lawsuit they file against such inconsequential things like energy independence and the foods we choose to eat.

I know, I am talking big bucks here and J.Q. Citizen is certainly in no position to fund such a task. It would be nice to see some of those "evil corporations" that most of us support with the purchase of their products get on board.

Wishful thinking? Probably, but ideas seem to be the only thing we have right now to push back with.

One choice would be to form groups and storm washington and kill as many congress turds as possible before we are killed ourselves.

Most sane people understand that there needs to be reasonable environmental safeguards in a world where the population is approaching 7 billion and the encroachment of man into the most remote areas of the planet threatens to stress our natural resources beyond their limits.

The problem is that that the environmental movement has been kidnapped by radicals who oppose any balance between the needs and modern lifestyle of man, and the need to maintain precious eco-systems that are imperative to a healthy planet. The problem is further degraded with government beauracracies that complicate what could and should be routine exercises in commerce.

Of course there are many conservatives who can be considered environmentalists, but the term has been distorted so badly that it has come to represent the most radical and anti-industrial segments.

Conservatives would be better served, and better received by playing down their own radical elements, whose position is as reactionary as the radical environmentalists.

As we progress into this century, there will be environmental concerns that must be addressed with balance and moderation. It's too bad that currently the radicals on both sides are dominating the debate.

Eco education promoters Fschool closure
In Volusia County, Florida our school revenue are shrinking. dollar shortage. Certainly schools systems can improve their spending habits greatly and immediately. However, closing schools and firing teachers seems about as anti-education as we could get. Where is the money we paid in taxes to the county? For the past ten years I have seen a great increase in educational opportunities. At least that’s what they are advertised and promoted as.
Ask what education is. What am I paying for? At age 52 the answer is easy for me – reading, writing, science, arithmetic and history are education! Spending for education has never been higher than it has in the past decade. Plenty of money is still flying around. Why are the kids losing schools and good teachers?
I submit people and organizations proclaiming them selves to be teachers are stealing it. Most if not all of these folk carry environmental credentials. This educational dog-and-pony-show comes directly at the expense of real educators. People teaching reading and writing are losing resources to people who pet pelicans, study pottery shards and splash around in the water. Children suffer because of it.
I fervently hope School Boards, parents, teachers and others rise up. Stop stealing educational dollars from our teachers and school system. Let’s fund reading, writing and arithmetic before we build phony educational facilities dedicated to hugging trees . Let’s teach our kids to compete in the real world. Let’s keep our schools open.
Citizens must remove educational imposters from the feeding trough of tax revenue. Environmentalists should not be permitted to masquerade as teachers or schools. Schools need to reassert themselves as true sources of knowledge. Mother earth promotes minimum wage, good teachers and schools prevent it.

If Congress fails to address the petitions regarding the energy issues placed before them they may wind up in front of the Supreme Court individually for violating the 1st Amendment. They may also be subject to recall by their District Contitutents and removed from office.

I have never understood how cap and trade would reduce CO2 emissions. From the very beginning I have always believed this was a false premise. If the government was really fearful of global warming wouldn't they want to stop emissions completely. Wouldn't every aspect of our lives be regulated if global warming was the issue. In the beginning cap and trade was meant to be a world wide phenom. If Russia produced less carbon emissions the US could buy their reserves. this would truly be a transfer of wealth from rich countries to poorer countries. The main goal was never to decrease emissions but to transfer wealth.

Keep your eye on the schools
As one respondent has rightly stated, most of this foolishness has it's genesis in the public schools. They have been teaching social change for a long time. The change agents have been in charge of the curricula for a long time. Now there are millions of grown-up Manchurian Candidates that knee-jerk anytime the code-word "green" or "diversity" is mentioned. The compliant teachers were amply supplied by liberal universities' education schools.

They have enormous control over the food you eat and how it's produced - at least in this country; countries that import to the U.S. have no restrictions. Understand that only a few of the most pie-eyed amongst them actually give a rip about the environment. The leaders of these groups are rabidly anti-capitalist. One could argue that the greatest danger to the environment is the environmentalists.

For many of their most destructive impacts on society they don't even need to get Congress to go along. They get Congress to pass some vague law or institute some department that has authority over some area and they then "help" write the regulations. Congress doesn't even need to act. Take the EPA: Congress set this up and it sounded so good to have a group that was going to protect the environment. It was, after all, for the children. The EPA now acts almost autonomously, writing regulations and imposing them with no oversight by any elected official. They are not going to give up their power easily.

Yes the eco-idiots have hijacked about half of the country with the aid of the communists and socialists in the Lamocrat party who are using it as a tool to advance their agenda. They write the laws such that EVERY project of any size winds up in court where the scientific minds of lawyers and handpicked jurists who were not able to avoid jury duty decide the “science” advanced by lawyers.

A while back I was listening to Rush Limbaugh explain about an article in the NY Times that by taking corn and making ethanol it was creating in thier words an "unintened consequence" of higher food prices worldwide.
