Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

George Orwell wrote his famous novel "1984" in 1949 but it is coming true in 2009.

Last week President Obama announced that we would no longer call enemy combatants "Enemy Combatants."

Yesterday the Office of Management and Budget sent a memo instructing people who are fighting the Global War on Terror that it was no longer Global, nor a War, nor had anything to do with Terror.

The new phrase is to be, "Overseas Contingency Operation."

Although the OMB denied it was ordering a change in phraseology, Washington Post writers Scott Wilson and Al Kamen reported,

"Senior administration officials had been publicly using the phrase 'overseas contingency operations' in a war context for roughly a month before the e-mail was sent."

The non-memo went on to strongly suggest that senior Pentagon officials should "pass this onto your speechwriters and try to catch this change before statements make it to OMB."

In an editorial, "Investors Business Daily" added,

We give tax "cuts" to people who don't pay taxes, spending is "investing."

This Obamian move to change the language to suit its policies has its roots in Orwell's 1984. In that novel this was called "Newspeak." That is not pronounced newz-peak; but new-speak.

As an example, the word "joycamp" was used to describe a forced labor camp. A "memory hole" was actually a series of pipes into which papers were placed to be shredded.

Words take on new meanings all the time. The word "gay" used to be defined as "excited and merry; manifesting or inclined to joyous exhibition of content or pleasure"

I'm pretty sure a remake of the 1934 Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie would not, today, be titled "The Gay Divorcee." It might be, but the plot line would probably be different as would the marketing campaign.

When the Hormel Meat Company introduced its Spiced Ham product in 1937 they couldn't have guessed that it would come to mean "unwanted e-mail."

Plenty of others:
Hot didn't used to mean attractive
Bomb - really attractive
Bread - money
Dough - more money
Cool - hot.

Some words take on a different meaning depending upon their usage. A slider at a Major League Baseball game has a far different meaning than it does at a curling match.

Let's join in the fun and invent new words and phrases for the Obamian Newspeak dictionary.

Deficit. Can't have a deficit. Let's change it to "Suspended Surplus." That's good.

Veto. Too negative. Henceforth it will be known as a "Legislative Facilitation."

Unemployment. Oh, no. We'll be calling that "Occupational Realignment."

Foreclosure. Nah. "Strategic Housing Stockpile."

Recession. That's easy. "Bush's Burden."

Feel free to send in your own.

The big question is: Where is the Office of Redefinition and how do I get a job there?

Name calling
Reading these posts I realize what a hateful bunch of bastards Conservatives are. Magic Negro, Hafrican, Traitor, Communist, Negro Village Idiot, White House Trash and more...Just a few of the names called here.

And of course looking elsewhere we see Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and hundreds of others who preach hate and division. Some Conservative in Maine even posted a lottery in his store saying " Pick the date Obama will be assinated.. Here's hoping there is a winner!" (rough quote)

Yes some liberals have engaged in hate speech but they have not been embraced by the party as these hatemongers have with charges of treason, socialism, Marxism and more. I even saw a car with the sign " Obama! Marxist Thug" on it..

Conservatives are hateful bastards who even attacked a triple amputee of the Vietnam War, Max Cleland.

I served in the USAF from 1969 -72 and my father was a wounded vet of WW2.. We love this country but you bastards are destroying it.

My real question is why do I even waste my time posting here...?? Well there are some who see the truth and I want to support them.

Joao
Hey Joao you call someone who told the truth about Bush lies "despicable?!! A man praised by Bush Sr and given a handwritten letter of praise? WHERE ARE THE WMD'S YOU INSISTED WERE THERE, JOAO??
And it does not occur to you that a President who takes powers to arrest enemy combatants without cause and then HIMSELF defines what is an enemy combatant is a not a dangerous thing??!!

What do you say to the children and widows of the soldiers who died thinking there were WMDs in Iraq? Opps? Sorry?

God how I wish Texas, a slave state, had been lost to the Mexicans..

Charlie
Vietnam Era Vet

Not that it matters to you Charles RI
"1984 arrived when G Bush misled this country into a war for WMDs that were not there."
Indeed 550 metric tons of yellow cake were found in Iraqui in 2003, and transferred to Canada in 2008. (S. for instance http://mwcnews.net/content/view/23792/0/) the same yellow cake that the despicable Josef Wilson said Saddam Hussein was not procuring.

"It arrived when Bush claimed the power to arrest anyone and hold them without charges and called it defending freedom and that was ok with you." Not anyone, but enemy combatants.

"It arrived when he ignored the Geneva Conventions." The Geneva Convention deals with the rights of regular soldiers. Enemy combatants, precisely because they are not regular soldiers, fall outside of the scope of the Geneva Convention.

Lon
Whoa whoa everybody Lon just laid a big one on us with that wonderful link. One problem: study was done by the legal counsel of six of the detainees. Yea really going to believe that whopper you little troll. Why don't you go troll around the NYTimes website if you are looking for some more politically correct diction that fits your pleasure. Meantime those of us that live in reality and are terribly tired of your mindless crap you keep posting on this site will take solace in the fact that we who read the articles on this website are not full of unending crap. Go away, no away. No one wants you here.

PS: did you really think we wouldn't notice who wrote your touted "study"?

1984
1984 arrived when G Bush misled this country into a war for WMDs that were not there and the right wing denounced anyone that questioned his actions calling that "supporting the troops" and you bought into that.

It arrived when Bush claimed the power to arrest anyone and hold them without charges and called it defending freedom and that was ok with you.

It arrived when he ignored the Geneva Conventions and used torture and denied torture was torture and you said "This is America"

1984 arrived when Conservatives who always claimed they were for small government and limited powers deserted those principles for political expedience and turned over the party to the Rush Limbaughs and Ann Coultiers of the world.

So if 1984 has arrived you have no one to blame but yourselves but that never seems to dawn on you because its all "double ungood!!"

Marty
True enough. Shurely libs will tire of the old "liberal" term & feel the need to progress. Perhaps to "neolib", working toward a "neomerica".

Fuzzy
"Could there ever be a lamer argument
about the national debt than George Bush started it? I'd really like to know. Seriously. Can something less rational than that ever be stated? Is "George Bush started it" really the worst reasoning for excusing Obama for outspending GW massively?

What is the new term for this mental incapacity to understand simple facts & their relationship to the dynamics of the reality in which we exist?

A new term for the sickness that inspires this irrationality needs to be made because we have used up all the usual ones, such as idiocy, lunacy, mentally challenged, sick, delusional, insane, retarded, and mentally ill."

Fuzzy, there is a new term. Well, it isn't really new - it's quite old, but like other words it has gone the way of such morphing as to render its original meaning completely lost to those who wield it.

Ready?

"Liberal."

Hey! Another Bit of Orwell
I really like these postings! I grew up reading the classics (and still prefer them to what passes for "literature" today). More of us need to dig into Orwell.

Here's my submission for entry into any "Newspeak" dictionary: Progressive. It used to mean someone who works for progress, especially politically. You could have called Upton Sinclair a Progressive (has anyone ever read "The Jungle"?). Thanks to current-day liberals, it now means a return to barbarism and a regression towards baseness and vulgarity.

But in all this, let's not forget "Brave New World". Thanks to Obama's policies, we should also include "Huxleyian".

Heads up - massive income opportunity
Here's something you can cash in big on. For real.

You know its coming. This is no gamble. Its as close to a sure thing as ever existed.

Every corporation on the globe is going to mandate that its employees take a "going green" training class. You need to set yourself up as a trainer & start soliciting corporations in your area.

Like all the other useless social training, the outfit that provides Going Green classes will charge millions for providing this vital service to humanity.

Retire in the next 10 years a very wealthy citizen - then move to New Zealand.

Your welcome.

Could there ever be a lamer argument
about the national debt than George Bush started it? I'd really like to know. Seriously. Can something less rational than that ever be stated? Is "George Bush started it" really the worst reasoning for excusing Obama for outspending GW massively?

What is the new term for this mental incapacity to understand simple facts & their relationship to the dynamics of the reality in which we exist?

A new term for the sickness that inspires this irrationality needs to be made because we have used up all the usual ones, such as idiocy, lunacy, mentally challenged, sick, delusional, insane, retarded, and mentally ill.

"George Orwell wrote his famous novel "1984" in 1949 but it is coming true in 2009."

Really? In 1984, the state was ruled by a one-party state with informants everywhere and those sent to re-education camps, the State outlawing words so "thought crime" was impossible and of course the two-way TVS so the government could keep track on everyone. That is happening now? I must have missed that.

It was also a state in a constant war with either Eastasia or Eurasia--who is the US in constant war with?

What a waste of a response. Yeah...you got it. Since not every single premise of 1984 is happening right this moment then the author has no argument. Well let's see we're manipulating language to ridiculous extremes, we're attempting to take over the auto industry and banking industry, and we're making villains out of executives even though we purposely left in language that would insure they got their bonuses. But hold on...there's no EastAsis we're fighting....so there's no comparison! I'd go on providing examples of big brother type things Obama is gunning for, but I doubt you really even mean what you say. You just "root" for the Dems and Obama. Think of the hysterical rants Dems went on about Bush shredding the constitution. Obama is making Bush's power grabs look like child's play, but there's hardly a peep. What bothers me most about libs isn't so much what they believe. In fact, I think most leftists don't have strong convictions about anything. All they care about is accumulating power. I mean really people. If you really held the courage of your stated convictions I can't see how you can't defend the man you elected. He is pissing on the Constition. Why doesn't that bother and scare you? What is in it for you? Your freedoms will be limited just like our's will.

I MUST HAVE MISREAD THE "Study"
I THOUGHT I read somewhere in the Link posted Re. the Gitmo Detainees that the Authors (* so indicated) were Attorneys for the Defendents. But, surely, that can't be true.. If so Credibility seems to be an issue with the SetonHall Univ Law School "Study"..Heavens to Mergatroid!!

There is one word Obama...
and his fellow Communists will understand since the meaning hasn't changed.

Go F&%$ yourselves!

No More White House

Obviously, for various reasons, "The White House" will be changed to "The Little House on the Prairie."

Lon,
Lets be sensible. Isn't it best to be safe than sorry. Especially when being sorry means that Our soldiers and yes maybe you could get blown up. Dont you think we owe it to our young soldiers to do all we can to keep them from being blown up by a terrorist, enemy combatant or whatever we call them now. These terrorist are not innocent civilians minding their own business and randomly scooped up by bounty hunters. I'm sure our government and military know a little more about what is going on than You and liberals who read one article and think they know everything. It's sad that you feel sorry for our enemies and treat our country and the soldiers who fight to keep us safe as the criminals.

Earmarks aplenty
After saying he would go over budget line by line and veto any earmarks,he turns around and passes a new budget with over 9,000 earmarks in it ,then labels it the Orwellian -"A New Era of Responsibility"

All together, Sheeple ..

Jabberwockies= our current politicians

The Media Is Aiding And Abetting.
The redefinition of words in the modern political culture. Reagan used to call political correctness fascism with a smiling face. Now there's no more smiling face. It's either your conform or else.
Employee Free Choice Act: What's free about having the right to a secret ballot removed?
Stimulus Bill: Nothing to stimulate the economy, just a party payoff to the unions and every liberal constituency who gave you campaign contributions.
President Obama saying we must stop borrowing and spending while doubling down on both. The eralier post writers are correct. This could go on and on all day.
Remember: Misdirection. Obama and company making sure we're mad at AIG execs when he and his cohorts: Dodd and Geithner made sure the language of the spending bill included language protecting AIG bonuses, but you're not supposed to remember that. http://theclosetconservative.com

(9/12 Project)

good is evil
Isaiah 5:
20Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

21Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

22Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

23Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

24Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

The right place to blame
"while defending the theft of my money to give to incompetent AIG execs because they have contracts."

Put down the Koolaid for a sec. Congress gave your money (assuming you pay taxes) to AIG with no strings attached--on purpose. Couldn't have been bothered to read the bill. Schumer couldn't remember how the AIG exclusion got in there....

And nobody ever raised the issue of whether these people were incompetent or not.

Yes, many are saying that union contracts are ruining America, but I don't see Congress trying to void those contracts by passing unconstitutional bills of attainder or ex post facto laws.

What a bunch of hypocritical garbage
Republicans howling with outrage that union contracts are ruining America, while defending the theft of my money to give to incompetent
AIG execs because they have contracts.

I guess some contracts are more equal than others.

Terms redefined
The left survives on the redefinition of words.

"Liberal" used to describe people who loved individual liberty and freedom. For example they were adamant about "free speech" which used to mean you could speak your mind without fear. Now "liberal" describes a political system that wants to take away individual liberty and give it to the state. And free speech means politically acceptable speech.

"Freedom" has been redefined. It no longer means you get to make your own decisions. Now freedom means you get to do what the government tells you. We used to call that slavery, or lack of freedom.

"Free market" and "capitalism" have been redefined. Those terms used to refer to an economic system that operated unfettered by excessive government regulation. The left has redefined the terms to mean centrally planned and government controlled industry. When the centrally planned and government controlled economy fails, as it always will, we are told capitalism and the free market have failed.

"Choice" has been redefined. Murder of infants is no longer murder. Now it's "choice."

"Family" has been redefined. They are trying to redefine "marriage." The Constitution has been redefined. The Second Amendment, the First Amendment, the Ninth and Tenth Amendments...

We could be here all day.

New-speak
New-speakSorry - "gimbol"

New-speak
"Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and bimbol in the wabe!

1984?
And why is the question mark there?

Here's the best New-speak...
...of all:

"colored people" (now deemed inarguably racist)

is now

"people of color" (now deemed inarguably acceptable)

And the sheeple fall for such drivel!

Black people wake up! DemocRATs do not love you! They are not on your side, and seek to enslave you (Brown, Yellow, and White people need to know that too.)

Recyclables
will include any books on conservative ideas, the Bible, the constitution. Of course they won't be burned--not good for the environment.

The criminals known as . . .
environMENTALists have been doing this for years. They change "jungle" to "rainforest". As we all know, jungles are nasty places. They change "swamp" to "wetlands". Swamps are equally nasty places. When they take the position that "animals" are more important than humans, it is time to feed "them" to the animals.
Since "environMENTALists" put animals on an equal plane with humans, they should go and live with the animals. They would find that animals are not benevolent and kind.
environMENTALists suffer from the syndrome known as the "disneyfication" of animals. This syndrome expresses itself in the "environMENTALists" attaching human characteristics to animals just like disney cartoon characters. This syndrome cannot be cured; only managed by close contact with REAL animals.

oBUMa
The Supreme Huckster knows exactly what he is doing - softening the terms in contemporary usage bit by bit until he gets to the point where the millions of libtards who now hang on his every vacuous utterance will believe him when he says Socialism is, and always has been, the goal of any real and viable Republic.

He seeks to turn your world upside down and inside out and he is beginning, has begun, his campaign with words, by redefining terms so that he becomes the sole source of meaning for all political speech.

There has been an unfortunate, and perhaps fatal, confluence of events in this country - the dumbing down of the American electorate to its lowest point ever, coincided with the candidacy of one of the nation's premier charlatans, Barack Hussein oBUMa.

The Perfidious Montebank of the White House is, inarguably, Public Enemy # 1. Hold on America, much worse is on the horizon than a war of words, the Grand Pretender has only just opened his bag of evil...

Language Is a Weapon of Control
Changing labels doesn't change reality. Calling a legal union of two people of the same sex a marriage is an atrocity. Calling trillions of dollars of spending an investment in the future turns economics upside down to include inflation, unemployment, and misery as an investment. When we destroy the very meaning of our words and language we undermine civilization and begin the slow descent to barbarism. Saul Alinsky would be overjoyed to see his disciples in the White House using language to obscure the actions of his totalitarian disciples. The barbarians are here and they are bent are on creating their utopia, which rational people really know is dystopia.

"The big question is:
Where is the Office of Redefinition and how do I get a job there?"

Members of the MSM and socialist lefty rag papers and internet are auditioning for these jobs as we speak.

Part of the test will be a kool aid drinking and retention competition directed by fellow loons.

Myth and Delusions
I pay attention, and I haven't seen real evidence of torture. Since the GW hypothesis has been well falsified, could we use that cap and trade idea for the terrorists. Did you hear that the Africanized bees are so keen on CO2 that they will go up the nose of a mamal to get it? They would not be for sequestering it.

Steve
It is a difficult question what to do with innocent people who have been locked up under inhumane conditions for more than 6 years now. That will turn even the most American loving person into someone who hates America.

The idea that we should continue to lock up people because our inhumane treatment of them has made them a threat is pretty repugnant. But then the people who thought it was ok to torture people on the off chance that they were guilty are pretty repugnant people.

retired geek
Here is a link to the study (or at least one that a found without too much trouble by looking). http://law.shu.edu/news/guantanamo_report_final_2_08_06.pd f

Somehow I suspect that you will continue to insist on your lack of facts. But if you really were making an honest attempt to get the facts, then I hope you will respond based on the information, which is somehow new to you.

Hey I got one...
Lonny the Liberal troll is now Lon. Brilliant.

Oh Those Progressives
I see there are some progressives here who protest the Patriot Act, the War on Terror, and other security measures since 9/11. Their supposed fears of our government over reaching are synical and hypocritical.

These same people will be the most fervent supporters of our government's use of power to surveil, arrest and tyrannize us in the name of Obama and his socialist allies in our congress.

They protest the supposed mistreatment of foreign combatants captured on the battlefield, and discovered in the act of crimes here in America. But they will cheer the decisions of our new government to blatantly abolish constitutional rights and target those of us who dare to speak against the New Order.

Did anyone catch Missouri's directive to its state police on the methods of detecting domestic terrorists? One of the indicators was the existence of John Paul and other third party bumper stickers on cars. Missouri state police were instructed to follow and observe the owners and consider them as possible militia members.

But there were no protests from the left, or the ACLU. They were strangely quiet.

The left's objections to our government's expanded powers were only that they were not in the hands of their side.

This is why we must be armed. Those who mock the notion that we must be vigilant against our government are naive. We want guns so we don't end up in the Superdome the next time.

orwellian?
How about "Healthy Forests Initiative", "Clean Air Act"---both of which reduced controls. Things like that went on for years under George W. Bush. The Orwellian angle was identified long before Mr. Galen pulled it out of his nether regions.

The Witch in the Ditch hates O'Vomit!!!!
Cindy Sheehan has turned on "the Messiah" for not waving a magic wand and bringing all the soldiers home from everywhere overnight. She probably thought Casey would rise from the dead once the "evil Bush" was out of office.

While I am certain she'd benefit from long-term psychiatric care, I also find this turnaround full of delicious schadenfreude!!!

Newspeak
I have some of that too--"Patriot" Act, "War on Terror (first time war has be declared on a tactic), among others. I suppose if you are against the Patriot Act, you are unpatriotic?

1984
"George Orwell wrote his famous novel "1984" in 1949 but it is coming true in 2009."

Really? In 1984, the state was ruled by a one-party state with informants everywhere and those sent to re-education camps, the State outlawing words so "thought crime" was impossible and of course the two-way TVS so the government could keep track on everyone. Nice Words
The point of changing some words is to soften their meaning; some words are changed to make them "nice" words.

For example, manic-depressive was changed to bi-polar because it doesn't sound as insane.

Terrorist was changed to enemy combatant because calling someone a terrorist is kind of mean.

Here are a few of my own ideas:

Ms. Kelly #8: "Zombie" shall heretofore be called "Living Impaired" (not to be confused with Vampire, which is now Heartbeat Impaired).

The War on Terror shall be called "The Effort to Stabilize Stateless Freedom Seekers" (the word "fighter" is negative and must therefore be omitted).

Stimulus Package will be called "Recession Management Proclamation"

Bail Out Funds = "Chronic Governmental Financial Support and Recovery Infusion"

Bipartisanship = "Unipartisanship"

Illegal alien = "Non-citizen Undocumented Worker"

I have more...

I can't resist
Accountability: A predisposition to add unimaginable sums of nothing to something.

Oversight: Disregarding the consequences of accountabiltiy.

This speak is not new
So I suppose we can also blame Obama for terms like "collateral damage" (civilian deaths), "Non-operative personnel" (Dead soldiers), and "pre-hostility" (peace)? No, those euphemisms have existed for years and they're all just as idiotic as any example you've given.

By the way, while it might be unfair to call the recession "Bush's Burden" (well, SOMEWHAT unfair), you can certainly thank him for the "suspended surplus", although to read Townhall you'd think Bush left a budget surplus and Obama is to blame for all the debt.

Code Pink after Barack Obama

"WASHINGTON — At a time of sky-high unemployment, rising cost of living and lower wages, and outrageous corporate bail-outs and bonuses, CODEPINK Women for Peace condemns President Obama’s announced plan today on Afghanistan, which will continue to drain billions from on our economy, further destabilize the Middle East and Central Asia, and threaten worldwide security. CODEPINK calls for a reallocation of war funds into the needs of the American people: health care, education and infrastructure, a rapid withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the closing of bases, and tireless diplomatic engagement with Afghan and Pakistan governments."

Don't fall for cap and trade
You'll be paying $1200 more for electricity a year and $10 a gal. for gas.

Meanwhile, the fed. gov't will steal billions from private citizens and businesses.

The goal is to perpetuate recession/depression so the gov't an *save* more and more while acquiring more and more power and destroying parts of the private market.

O doesn't care about the stock market, as he isn't invested in it according to the WSJ. Where his gadzillions are from his campaign seems not to be on anyone's mind.

O is a fraud, a narcisstic shill, and unskilled anything except politician. Soon, he'll recommend bailouts for failing newspapers like the NYSlimes and Wash Toast as he needs t
heir approval and cheerleading. Of course, the rags arae failing because no one want to read their krap and pay for ads in their lib. pages.

Send tea bags and go to tea parties. Somehow let the powers in DC know you hate what they are doing.

Agh!
The last sentence in the first paragraph of my previous post should've read, "The Global Warming BRAND is becoming as disreputable as Delorean and Bon Vivant." Sorry.

Another entry
_Climate change_. The weaknesses of the case for anthropogenic global warming have finally slipped through the press embargo, skepticism is rising much faster than sea level, and the scientific unanimity that Al Gore announced turns out to have been a mirage or a lie. The Global Warming is becoming as disreputable as Delorean and Bon Vivant.

The obvious solution: rebranding. Climate change is new, improved, and broad enough to encompass global warming, global cooling, solar wind, and cheap toupees. At worst, it's meaningless. At best, it's not news -- change is about the only thing that climate does in the long term. As means of maintaining hysteria, shouting that the climate is in flux is roughly comparable to the revelation that water is wet.

Lon question for you

How about posting a link to that study?

You are entitled to your own opinion, but NOT your own facts.

Lon
"Enemy combatant is not a well defined term, and was used by the Bush administration to include innocent people who were bought from bounty hunters nowhere near a battlefield."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Well Lon, when Obama releases these "innocent" people on American Soil I hope it is in your neighborhood.

p
There have been studies of the prisoner population at Gitmo, and the great majority were turned in by people for cash rewards (that is by bounty hunters). That alone does not guarantee they are innocents. Obviously the bounty hunters claimed they were guilty and we believed them. So I would understand it if you were defending the practice of gathering prisoners through bounty hunters. But you seem to just be parading your ignorance on the subject as if it is meaningful.

Same sex marriage...
Legally acknowledging a man and and a woman, as a couple, physically mating less. Also known as equality.

Barack 'Teleprompter' Obama

"The man with the strident voice was still talking remorselessly away...
It was just a noise, a quack-quack-quacking...
This was not a real human being but some kind of dummy.
It was not the man's brain that was speaking, it was his larynx.
The stuff that was coming out of him consisted of words,
but it was not speech in the true sense:
it was noise uttered in unconsciousness,
like the quacking of a duck."
George Orwell 1984

When Barack Obama says 'Change' the doublespeak means Marxist/Socialism.

When Barack Obama says 'Hope' the doublespeak means redistribution of wealth.

Newspeak
Political reality. Halve the deficit by spending double. Liberal thinker. Invest (as in waste money on another "social" program). I could go on and on.

11th Edition soon to be in print.

Lon
Enemy combatant is a far more preferable term than what? Where's your proof for the contention that these people were bought from bounty hunters? Huffingtonpost.com? DailKos.com? Do you have names of the bounty hunters? It's funny, I actually fought in this Overseas Contingency Operation, and didn't see much bounty hunting going on here. Maybe you can tell me, though since you seem to have inside information.

Let's examine Global War on Terror. There are multiple groups of stateless people who have sworn to our destruction or complete subjugation who wear neither uniforms or abide by accepted rules of warfare. Now, let's see- they don't want to negotiate, so we must fight to preserve our way of life. Sounds like a war to me! Just because we don't have clear battle lines drawn or one side doesn't like uniforms doesn't mean the term 'war' doesn't apply. Ever hear of a guerilla war? Language always has some inherent ambiguity that anyone clever enough can pick apart (what does 'is' mean???). Yet, I think the Bush terms come far closer to the mark of describing what we're actually doing than Obamanewspeak.

A new word for
infanticide.

I read some years ago that one day killing young children would be allowed under the term postnatal abortion.

Certainly is not a stretch of the imagination.

A Font of Inspiration
Earmark Free Legislation - A bill that has come under public scrutiny and therefore had all earmarks moved to another bill.

Transparent Government - The invisible hand that rewards and punishes individual and corporate behavior at its discretion.

Social Justice - Taking something from those who don't typically vote for you, and giving it to those who typically do.

Social Security - A congressional slush fund used to promote Social Justice.

Private Property - Property that has not yet drawn the attention of a desirous government entity or special interest group.

Uphold the Constitution - To make policy and law in direct conflict with the wording of the Constitution in order to uphold the "more perfect understanding" of the document you have achieved as a president, congressman, or justice.

There are so many more, but alas I must get back to work so that I might pay my lazy neighbor's mortgage.

Some words are fun
but some are much more serious, and if you don't like the pressure to redefine the American language, there is a recourse.

Refuse to be politically correct.

I have never (to my memory) used the term “African American.” I think it is detrimental to the country in general to hyphenate our population based on skin color or country of origin.

I also think the term is derogatory. It implies that black people are somehow not quite as American as white people. Most of the blacks that I know have no more in common with Africa than I do. I’m sure a lot of black high school students today couldn’t show you Africa on a map, and if you set them down in the middle of Africa, they most certainly would not feel at home.

When speaking of intrauterine human beings, I never refer to them as “unborn”. I hate that term. It infers upon the developing child a sense of permanent “unness”. It puts me in mind of the term for zombies; you know the “undead”. An intrauterine child is in the process of development. To say they are unborn makes it sound like they are stuck in limbo.

We don’t call kindergartners “uneducated” because they are at the beginning of their education. When you hear the term uneducated, you think of someone who has dropped out, given up, never to be educated. By the same token, a developing child is PREBORN. They are at the beginning of their development and will, without any interference, be born on schedule.

So, rebel. Use appropriate language and refuse to allow yourself to be indoctrinated.

strange column
The first two examples which are supposed to show that 1984 has just arrived are the abandonment of phrases that were invented by the last administration for Orwellian purposes.

Enemy combatant is not a well defined term, and was used by the Bush administration to include innocent people who were bought from bounty hunters nowhere near a battlefield.

The Global War on Terror is not an actual war, and it is not actually on terror. It has included two wars one of which was based on terrorist acts having emerged from there. But we were never at war with the terrorist Tamil Tigers although they are on the globe and commit terrorist acts.

So the column becomes something akin to complaining that the Obama people are being Orwellian back.

Later in the column, Galen suddenly becomes bothered by slang, and the fact that word meanings evolve. But that has nothing to do with Orwellian doublespeak. Language is fluid, and it is going to change. One should object to the use of language to obscure rather than clarify. But of the Obama examples, the first seems designed to remove term of obfuscation. The latter attempts to remove one term of obfuscation by substituting another that is unclear. Although the real push there seems to be the removing of the unclear term. It is doubtful we will be seeing much of the replacement unclear term.

Location of OoR location
The Office of Redefinition currently uses space on the 3rd floor of the Department of Redundancy Department building's 3rd floor.

Once construction is complete on the BACKUP DoRD building (identical in every way), they will remain in place, as the "infrastructure improvement workers" tear the backup building down, then rebuild it again until it meets it's projected 34 trillion dollar budget.

new speak
that's like telling people who are blind that they are sight challenged.

If only they can overcome the challenge they will again be able to see.

This notion that redefining words somehow removes the problem is a great comfort to trolls who went from being ignorant to mentally challenged

Some "Duh!" examples
Stimulus Bill - rampant deficit spending doing little or nothing to stimulate the economy

Employees Freedom of Choice Act - removes the freedom of employees to choose to have anonymous ballots when deciding whether or not to unionize.

More obvious ones...

More? Worker's Choice,
Life Protection Act to allow more abortions, Worker's Paradise where everyone is equal (equally poor that is, except for those more equal than others), transparent government where everything is done behind closed doors with no input allowed from the opposition party and multiple law firms are hired to prevent any leakage of any document not approved for release by the One. "Press conferences" where the "journalists" are preselected and told what to ask.

If I had the time, this could go on forever!

A New Acronym
Euthenasia of the old, infirm, etc will be described as Distributing Exit Assets Deliberately
