Advice for a Presidential Candidate: What would Winston Churchill Do?

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I suspect few readers will disagree when I say that not one of the presidential candidates, Republican or Democratic, has yet articulated a compelling campaign theme. All favor security. Not one opposes prosperity. Each promises to protect Social Security and improve health care. Voters can be forgiven if they are not overwhelmed.

Let me offer a different approach on the off-chance that some candidate might find it useful: Tell voters the hard truth – and challenge them.

In particular, tell them we are at a critical moment in our nation's history: A dangerous enemy is waging an unconventional war against us. We are just beginning to learn how to defend ourselves. Remind them that this enemy has been underestimated by presidents and lawmakers of both parties many times, over many years.

Tell them, too, that fighting this enemy is a burden that history is asking the current generation of Americans to bear. We must do this for future generations – as past generations fought for us.

Say frankly that if we don't have the stomach for a long and difficult war, we will be defeated by movements that are more determined than we are -- and more ruthless than we can ever imagine becoming.

It is rare for politicians to talk this way. But it is not unprecedented. In 1940, Hitler's armies were wiping off the map one European nation after another. In Britain, many people believed the wisest course was not to fight the Nazis but to negotiate a diplomatic settlement, to address the legitimate grievances of the German people.

On May 13, 1940 Winston Churchill entered the House of Commons for the first time as British Prime Minister. Next to him was Neville Chamberlain, the outgoing PM. Chamberlain was greeted with cheers. Churchill was not.

Churchill didn't tell the officials and the public what they wanted to hear. He told them what they needed to hear: that it would be both wrong and unproductive to attempt to appease tyrants.

He famously said: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering."

It is possible the current conflict will be less lethal than World War II. But it will last longer -- it already has. What policy would a Churchillian presidential candidate adopt? Churchill said: "You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea, and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy."

Any candidate supporting this approach would have only disdain for such groups as MoveOn.org which this week accused General David Petraeus of "betrayal" for refusing to accept defeat in the Battle of Iraq

After Gen. Petraeus' initial testimony, both the Washington Post and the Washington Times headlined his support for troop reductions next year. But, by definition, a "surge" subsides. Petraeus has always intended to transfer responsibility for security to Iraqis – he just wants to decide when and where, based on conditions on the ground, not legislation passed in Washington.

The New York Times, whose editorial page views are hardly distinguishable from those of MoveOn.org, was closer to identifying the news in Petraeus' report. Its top story: "Petraeus Warns Against Quick Pullback in Iraq." It should not require a Churchill to see that if American forces leave Iraq precipitously, America's enemies will fill the vacuum. And Iraqis who have been fighting with us will be slaughtered. People around the world will get the joke: To be America's friend is more perilous than to be America's enemy.

The real news in Petraeus' testimony: Americans troops have been beating al-Qaeda in Iraq and, as that job gets done, it is Iranian-backed militias that are becoming the main problem that needs to be eliminated. The regime in Tehran wants Iraq as its colony. It doesn't want Iraq to be an America ally in the war with Militant Islamism.

On several occasions over the past three decades, Tehran has sent murderers to kill Americans. On none of those occasion has the United States responded forcefully. The mullahs are betting there will be no break with that precedent – not by the current occupant of the Oval Office and not by whoever replaces him in 2009.

I suspect more than a few Americans would vote for a candidate who tells us the mullahs are dead wrong.

The Dragon-tongued Beast
“Unlike the Nazis or the Soviets eager to use its own military power, the Regime has been covertly waging “unrestricted warfare” of terror, economy and media by proxy to wear down the will of the last Christian power on earth, in preparation for the final conflict.

The Soviets were openly called “the Evil Empire” by the USA, but the Regime had its way to be named as “strategic partners” instead. The Soviets would be challenged directly for any trouble coming from its allies, but the Regime could get around and play the role of a “mediator” for crises caused by its proxies, once named as “the axis of evil” immediately after the worst attack on American soil.”

The Chinese Military Budget is assessed at $75 billion - 1/6 of ours. It has not invaded a foreign country for many centuries. If you'
re worried - perhaps its because the West invaded China, followed by Japan - yet China was no threat to any of those powers at the time. Are you suggesting payback? That $75 billion you claim we're financing is a pittance as compared to what the country is spending on internal developments - it's true focus and interest.

As far as Taiwan - Taiwan certainly isn't yours - but it did used to be in China's sphere of influence.

If you're worried that China will dominate within it's sphere of influence, then you're probably right.

But the fact that we've been hanging around for 60 years certainly doesn't make it ours. After all, they've been hanging around that neighborhood for 4500 years.

Is our trade deal badly written - absolutely. Are we being exploited - no question about it. But that's not the fault of the Chinese - that's the same leadership that wanders around with 12 million illegals (or is in 20 million) and explains why it can't, won't, doesn't, enforce the laws. Talk to them. They're the ones that talk out of both sides of their mouths on trade. As in - we give the other guy free trade access to our markets (you know - free trade)- while they protect their's against us - and we let them do it. And yes - I think the Chinese are the most formidable future competitor on the table. They compete - hard. My prediction is that in 30 years their economy will be larger than ours. In the same time, they will very likely overcome our lead in technology. After all - they're grinding out 5 engineers for every one we put out. They're lean and hungry. They want more than Americans do. That's what being hungry does to you.

China, Iran
I think people are sometimes too paranoid about the likely trajectory of China. What's the reason they allowed the country to go so radically (compared to the state control of the past and the expectations of observers) in the direction of a free economy? Survival.

I hypothesize that the leaders of China will "lead" in whatever direction looks most likey to secure their power. They don't hold all the cards. They have to negotiate with their people, their elites, their neighbors and enemies.

They allowed the country to swing to private property and enterprise not because they believe in the Chinese Dream, but because they are trying to avoid the political meltdown that would occur if they tried to keep the lid on all the poplulations aspirations in the age of Japan, South Korea and the Internet. This is also the reason they will not invade Taiwan. They need global trade so they need global good will.

Iran. It is unacceptable that the the mullahs attack US soldiers with impunity. But a new war is not the solution. Unless that great leader that Cliff is talking about wants to be tossed out on his ear.

Wise Wars?
Whose to say if we had unleashed Patton or MacArthur what the World would look like today. However, China according to above comments looks like another success story with Democracy - It ain't that at all. America is financing the largest Military build up since who knows when. The Chinese have already decided to invade Taiwan and will be the World's greatest threat to peace in the future, with Islamic Extremism being a close second. When they Invade Taiwan is the only question. The Chinese Military have already plans for taking and controlling the natural resources they lack, which are needed to maintain their Power base, including Oil. The Chinese Communist Leaders still yearn for Global Domination, and not once have I seen anything to make me feel less worried regarding China and the Future Oppression to Freedom & Liberty that they represent to the World. The Difference of today, is that the U.S.A., and the world, is financing this military buildup and unstable future with this Tolitarian Government. Whose to say that if Patton & MacArthur had annihilated our Enemies of the Past, we wouldn't be better off today. Can World Peace be achieved with a bunch of Tyrants and with the Weapons available with today's technology, or will World Peace only exists when one has eliminated all other Military Threats and eliminated access to these types of Weapons? Care to review Bacterial Warfare?

Cont.
Frankly, I suspect that letting the Chinese solve Chinese problems may be turning out better than we at one time believed. Granted, it's an oligarchy, but economic freedom has expanded at at breathtaking speed. Every government corporation has now been sold. Capital Markets are operating. 200 million people have been moved into cities off farms in the last 10 years - and they've been housed and fed. And they say they'll move another 300 million in the next 10-15 years. They have built a freeway system (60,000 miles)in barely a decade that mirrors our own, just as they've put an amazing power and communications grid on line to fuel their country. Young people have only a vague idea of Mao. We still try to understand just what is left of "Communism" other than an Oligarchy with a faint patina. After all, communism is primarily an economic theory that the Chinese have thoroughly trashed.

We have no conceptual basis for a central planning system that unleashes the full range of capitalism through-out a society of this size, and then pulls back and out and lets the system run with little or no interference. Large companies once owned by the government have no members of that government left in any position - whether directors or officers.

And I can only imagine the debate in this country that would have transpired as we tried to control a population of that size whose culture is based on family - knowing full well that if we didn't starvation would have been substantial and inevitable.

Could we have done better? Would Chang have done better?

Who knows. What I do know is it cost little more than patience and a firm resolve.

Looking at Iraq these days - that's cheap.

Wise Wars
Select your wars wisely is generally good advice. Yes, we could have tried a land war with the Russian Army after we entered Berlin, but we chose containment. And in the end, that particular government fell because it was a corrupt oligarchy wrapped around a failed economic system. Eisenhower and Truman decided against a land war with China in Asia. Today, we see a country undergoing an amazing capitalistic transformation that is staggering by Western Standards. In turn, it has decided to screw North Korea down as it finally decided that allowing them to have nuclear weapons was decidedly more dangersous to them, than to anyone else, and it is donwsizing it's army by 1/2 million men this year alone. In most cases, it is not the first war you fight, it's the second one. Iraq being a classic example. I've often wondered what anyone would have done with China - if they had it. Very few societies are as culturally cohesive as the Chinese, and installing a fundamentally corrput dictator (Chang) in what was then a principally illiterate and agrarian society would not have led to any great democratic movement. It could, never-the-less, have led to a long term civil war. Going to Beijing would have defeated nothing as Mao demonstrated when he took that 6000 mile walk called the long March. If you think Iraq is a head-ache, just how many forces would you have put into China to secure China? And if trying to establish some form of a democratic set of institutions in a country of 26 million, how would we have done so in a country of 1 billion?

And if we couldn't get them fed, what would we have done?

Duncan Hunter
Duncan Hunter has clearly articulated his views and more than that, he has effectively WORKED to correct wrongs, even those encouraged by so-called GOP 'leadership'. Mr. May may like to do an in-depth study of this man. A few Churchillian similarities occur. Combat veteran (Airborne/Ranger in Vietnam). Member of The House (Since 1981. Serves on the House Armed Services Committee as Ranking Minority Member).
Unafraid to challenge party heavyweights.( Opposed the 1986 Amnesty Act and has done all he could to stop the flow of illegal since then. Hardly Bush's lapdog on current Immigration and Trade Issues.) EXCEPTIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE, like Churchill, like Reagan. Duncan Hunter is the EXCEPTIONAL REPUBLICAN we can turn to in America's perilous hour.

What Would Winston Churchill Do?
Switch political parties to further his own political career, support economy killing policies because they were politically popular, become a depressed alcoholic who was a master at hitching a ride on the political tide?

We are not there yet
When Sir Winston was heard by the people of the United Kingdom the war, World War, was a reality few could deny. It didn't have to be. When Hilter refused to abide by the treaty ending the Great War, nothing was done. When he invaded land lost that was no longer Germany nothing was done. Yet France's and the UK's military far exceed Germany's.

Yet the British people had cheered through almost the identical, bizarre and nasty rhetoric that we here have suffered since not going into Iraq but since going into Afghanistan. Few seemed to remember how the Democrats and national media had the Afghan war already a quagmire and just like Vietnam as we were putting boots on the ground. They depend on you to forget.

The Democrats see NO reason EVER for war. You think they would fight to defend our borders, nope. Have you heard any Democrat speak of stopping the invasion going on today across our southern borders?

Did you pay attention to the truck load of dynamite just south of the border that blew up right after the crowd and emergency vehicles arrived to clean up the bus it had hit?

Did you pay attention to the PEMEX pipelines blown up by anti-government guerillas south of Mexico City?

I don't care about Mexican coming here legally to work. Yet I still believe we are a republic, something that apparently is lost on most politicians.

Duncan vs. Ron
They both strike me as honest and sincere.

Either is a better choice than the Rudy, Mitt, or Fred.

Both are pro-life. However, individually they approach the issue very differently. Ron wants to follow The Constitution. Duncan wants to amend The Constitution to reflect his personal beliefs. That makes Duncan a threat to everyone who sees the issue differently than he does.

Ron wants to use the power of the Presidency to reduce the size and cost of the federal government. His record in Congress supports the conclusion that he will do just that.

Duncan wants to use the power of the Presidency to enforce his will on his fellow citizens. He says he does, and I believe him.

Those who want to use the coercive force of government to achieve their social and political goals scare me. Therefore, I choose Ron over Duncan.

BS
By your 'living in the past' standards there are no heroes to honor. Instead we should find creative ways to denigrate all of history's revered ones, perhaps low enough to reach equivalence with Millard Fillmore or Jimmy Carter.

Heroes are human, with associated human flaws. They stood tall and led at pivotal times. You will never be successful at tarnishing their records, no matter how uncomfortable you are with their accomplishments.

It does not help...
Mountain Rose writes:
'No Ron Paul though!
Huckabee, I like too, but no Ron Paul.

He is a shill for the Shrillster, trying to steal votes to help her slip in the door.'

to slap a label on a person. Ron Paul is on the opposite end of a very long table from Hillary. You should know that if you know anything about Ron and Hillary.

You asked earlier how to choose from so many good candidates. Don't look at their labels, look at their performance over the last 10 years. Sound bites and talk shows are not the best tools to use in choosing a President. Their past perform is the true predictor of future action. Using that critera the field of candidates shrinks rapidly.

Rose do some home work. Your children and grand children etc. are worth the effort.

Elong:
"We'd have beat the Russians back to Moscow at the end of WWII and the Chinese back to Peking back in '51."

in 1945 America had been at war for 3+ years and had suffered 400K dead. The Soviets were our allies in that fight. If you think for one minute that Truman could've convinced the country to turn on the Soviets and start a new war, I've got a bridge to sell you.
As for getting into a land war with China in 1951, well that kinda speaks for itself.
Sometimes the nation needs leaders with more brains than balls. Now is one of those times.

name calling
I certainly hope that the posts from supporters on both sides of the issue are not representative of the ability of the electorate to intelligently espouse their views. Seems that most are only capable of name calling and using trite old expressions.

There are honest people whose motives are pure on both sides of any issue, be they democrat or republican, conservative or liberal and there are extremes on both sides.

How can we be bring peace to any country when we wage verbal terrorism on those who, in our own country disagree with us

acceptreality
Oh stop living in the past and in the state of denial. Churchill is long dead and he's not coming back to inspire anyone. And I'm sure during his lifetime Churchill got his share of abuse from his critics too. There are no saints and leaders during their lifetime are usually unappreciated.

BS
Of course you do not want to be reminded of WW2, Churchill or any other triumph over tyranny. In your pampered world of self-indulgence there is no room for discomfort and no appreciation for leaders who know the price of freedom. Surrender is so much easier for you people as long as you can call it a negotiated peace.

I take it from your smug comment that you are pleased that Churchill was removed from office after the heavy lifting was complete. The war-weary people of England wanted to look beyond their interminable sacrifices as the war ended. What is your excuse?

No Ron Paul though!
Huckabee, I like too, but no Ron Paul.

He is a shill for the Shrillster, trying to steal votes to help her slip in the door.

I predict that Ron Paul is going to run under a third party when he loses.

Don't trust him: he is just trying to help Shrillary win.

Go Rudy! Go Rudy!
I just heard Rudy Guiliani on the Hugh Hewitt show, and was really impressed.

He came out swinging against the nastiness of the Democrat(ick) Party's rhetoric, and pointed out the lack of experience as leaders among all of their front runnners.

I have never in my life been this happy with a field of Republican Candidates, and realized today how hard it is going to be to choose in the Primary.

Today, I hear Rudy, and I want him to be President. The other day, I heard Fred Thompson and wanted him. I have also been a supporter of Mister Mitt.

How is a gal to choose?

They all have great qualities, and I think that each one would be a great President in a different way.

Wishful thinking.
I wish conservative reactionary sheeple would stop looking to World War II and Winston Churchill whenever things go wrong. Churchill sold out the Jews by cutting off immigration to Palestine just before World War II. He did this to appease the Arabs in exchange for unfettered access to the Suez Canal and unlimited access to oil in the upcoming war. Oh, and 5 minutes after World war II ended, Churchill was kicked out of office by a non-entity named Clement Atlee.

Dave Stone
If Patton (or MacArthur for that matter) had gotten his way, we wouldn't have been in the past 4 or 5 messes we found ourselves in.

We'd have beat the Russians back to Moscow at the end of WWII and the Chinese back to Peking back in '51.

We have such men...
The problem we face is that the MSM think they run the country. The politicians dangle from their strings, which brings the image of the "Godfather" logo.

Any politician who says what they think are immidiately critized by the MSM and labled a lunatic. A perfect example of this is when Tancredo suggested that we should suspend all immigration. Immediately, all the other candidates distanced themselves from the idea. Personally, I think that's an excellent idea. Why do we need more foreigners in this country anyway?

Another example is Newt. Anytime his name is mentioned, we immediately hear about the "baggage" he carries. Well, I don't give a damn what baggage he carries. I want someone who can identify and solve problems, lead the military and tell the MSM to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Tancredo, Hunter and Gingrich are the ONLY candidates that would say what we need to hear. The others are all talking points driven and power hungry. Sadly, neither of the three have much of a chance of getting elected. Why? Because the MSM runs the country.

My How the West has Fallen
Consider Churchill's quote: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering."

Contrast that with today's backbenching, child-like, liberal mindset of waging war: Are we there yet? Are we there yet? What about now... are we there yet?

The diff
I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. Sir Winston Churchill:

In a January interview with Jim Lehrer, Bush was asked why he hadn’t called for more Americans to “sacrifice something.” He said: “Well, you know, I think a lot of people are in this fight. I mean, they sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible images of violence on TV every night.” George W. Bush

Va Patriot
I think you've said it all. I'm sick of the
"top tier" baloney. Did you notice, Hunter got all of maybe two questions..and by Fox in that silly dog and pony show euphemistically called a "debate." I've admired Duncan Hunter ever since he appeared in Congress and was on special orders. He's not a big talker but when he does speak, it's the truth and you can take it to the bank he means it. I want a man as President that I can trust to protect this country not just overseas but domestically by
securing the borders. President Bush lost me when he referred to minutemen as "vigilantes", echoed by his buddy Vincente Foxx from Mexico.
His promise to his Mexican constituents to push amnesty; the jailing of Ramos, Campeon and Hernandez and his failure to live up to his promise to "look at it." Did I mention his
remark about our patriotism? I support his efforts in Iraq but not the rules of engagement,
if we are going to war then lets go to war..polical correctness has gotten too many of our kids killed or wounded. No quarter should be given the enemy, and NO sitting Senator/Congresscritter should be allowed to meet with our enemies and trash this country
while meeting with the creeps, a la Pelosi and
Kucinich.

What must we do in this Fight
Everyone knows what must be done to fight and win against Terrorism. Cut-off the Heads. Eliminate Iran & Syria's ability to provide Arms, Finances, and Personnel in this struggle in Iraq and against Israel. Eliminate those threats and the Iraqi's will be able to stable and maintain a cohesive attempts at Government.
What we must do here in the U.S.A. is to fight the fight that is inside our Borders. We must defeat the MSM & Demonrats in every race within the U.S.A. We must force Unions Members to redefine what Union Bosses can and can't do with Union funds in regards to Political Contributions. We must insure Recall capabilities to get rid of Legislatures who violate America's will, immediately. But most important we must boycott all Advertisers and financial supporters for CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, LA Times, NY Times, & other Political Bias Forums. At least 49% of the Country is Conservative based upon the last few elections( I expect that it is alot higher). If these Conservatives united and boycotted Companies Product & Services who advertise with these news outlets, all those mentiioned above would be bankrupt and out of business within a year. We might be able and expect News & Info that actually is Fair & Balanced, in lieu of Distorted and Outright Lies.

Hunter Wins Texas Straw Poll

If we wish to keep our representative Republic, we must elect a President who will secure the borders and enforce the laws. The actions of the next President will determine the fate of this great nation. Texans have been on the front line of this inundation and understand its consequences. They know that Duncan Hunter is the one man who can be trusted to do what needs to be done.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.
