With unemployment at 10.2%, what will happen by the end of Obama's first term?

I suspect few readers will disagree when I say that not one of the presidential candidates, Republican or Democratic, has yet articulated a compelling campaign theme. All favor security. Not one opposes prosperity. Each promises to protect Social Security and improve health care. Voters can be forgiven if they are not overwhelmed.

Let me offer a different approach on the off-chance that some candidate might find it useful: Tell voters the hard truth – and challenge them.

In particular, tell them we are at a critical moment in our nation's history: A dangerous enemy is waging an unconventional war against us. We are just beginning to learn how to defend ourselves. Remind them that this enemy has been underestimated by presidents and lawmakers of both parties many times, over many years.

Tell them, too, that fighting this enemy is a burden that history is asking the current generation of Americans to bear. We must do this for future generations – as past generations fought for us.

Say frankly that if we don't have the stomach for a long and difficult war, we will be defeated by movements that are more determined than we are -- and more ruthless than we can ever imagine becoming.

It is rare for politicians to talk this way. But it is not unprecedented. In 1940, Hitler's armies were wiping off the map one European nation after another. In Britain, many people believed the wisest course was not to fight the Nazis but to negotiate a diplomatic settlement, to address the legitimate grievances of the German people.

On May 13, 1940 Winston Churchill entered the House of Commons for the first time as British Prime Minister. Next to him was Neville Chamberlain, the outgoing PM. Chamberlain was greeted with cheers. Churchill was not.

Churchill didn't tell the officials and the public what they wanted to hear. He told them what they needed to hear: that it would be both wrong and unproductive to attempt to appease tyrants.

He famously said: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering." Continued...

The Dragon-tongued Beast
“Unlike the Nazis or the Soviets eager to use its own military power, the Regime has been covertly waging “unrestricted warfare” of terror, economy and media by proxy to wear down the will of the last Christian power on earth, in preparation for the final conflict.

The Soviets were openly called “the Evil Empire” by the USA, but the Regime had its way to be named as “strategic partners” instead. The Soviets would be challenged directly for any trouble coming from its allies, but the Regime could get around and play the role of a “mediator” for crises caused by its proxies, once named as “the axis of evil” immediately after the worst attack on American soil.”

The Chinese Military Budget is assessed at $75 billion - 1/6 of ours. It has not invaded a foreign country for many centuries. If you'
re worried - perhaps its because the West invaded China, followed by Japan - yet China was no threat to any of those powers at the time. Are you suggesting payback? That $75 billion you claim we're financing is a pittance as compared to what the country is spending on internal developments - it's true focus and interest.

As far as Taiwan - Taiwan certainly isn't yours - but it did used to be in China's sphere of influence.

If you're worried that China will dominate within it's sphere of influence, then you're probably right.

But the fact that we've been hanging around for 60 years certainly doesn't make it ours. After all, they've been hanging around that neighborhood for 4500 years.

Is our trade deal badly written - absolutely. Are we being exploited - no question about it. But that's not the fault of the Chinese - that's the same leadership that wanders around with 12 million illegals (or is in 20 million) and explains why it can't, won't, doesn't, enforce the laws. Talk to them. They're the ones that talk out of both sides of their mouths on trade. As in - we give the other guy free trade access to our markets (you know - free trade)- while they protect their's against us - and we let them do it. And yes - I think the Chinese are the most formidable future competitor on the table. They compete - hard. My prediction is that in 30 years their economy will be larger than ours. In the same time, they will very likely overcome our lead in technology. After all - they're grinding out 5 engineers for every one we put out. They're lean and hungry. They want more than Americans do. That's what being hungry does to you.
