Opting for Failure?

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

This week, the White House sent around a memo titled: “Senator Harry Reid, Then & Now.” It quoted Reid back in November saying: "We're not going to do anything to limit funding or cut off funds" for Iraq. It then quoted Reid a few days ago saying he would co-sponsor a bill to cut off exactly such funding.

The White House’s evident goal here was to highlight Reid’s inconsistency and perhaps even suggest he has broken a solemn promise. But that misses the more salient point: Why has Reid, now Senate majority leader, shifted positions on this key issue?

The likely answer can be found in a press release by Senator Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat and a co-sponsor of the same bill. “Congress,” he said, “has a responsibility to end a war that is opposed by the American people …” Other opponents of the mission in Iraq have been echoing this talking point as well.

We like to think of our politicians as leaders but most are followers: They do what they think the voters want them to do (that’s the smoothest path to political power), and they divine the will of those voters by reading polls.

Back in November, even after the Democrats bested Republicans in the elections, it was assumed that most Americans would be furious over any attempt to de-fund troops engaged in combat. But recent polls, taken by such organizations as Pew, CNN and the Washington Post suggest that a substantial number of voters no longer see it that way: Confidence in the possibility of salvaging a successful outcome in Iraq is running low; support for Congress legislating a specific date when American troops will come home is running high.

Should politicians come to believe there is less political risk in voting to cut off funds to soldiers on the battlefield than in supporting a war effort led by a low-polling president, many – from both parties – will cast their votes on Capitol Hill to reflect that calculation.

Few will dwell on the likely consequences of such a decision. Among them: The United States – not just President Bush -- will be seen as having been defeated. That will mean more radicalized Muslims, more volunteers for the War on the Free World. Victorious general have no trouble attracting recruits.

Iraq will undoubtedly suffer much more carnage. Those who eventually take power will not be America’s friends. Terrorist groups will make Iraq a base. What will the U.S. do to stop them?

The tactics used to defeat the U.S. in Iraq will be employed in Afghanistan as well. How many bombs will explode in how many markets, schools and police stations before the polls show most Americans ready to leave that corner of the world as well?

And then? The liberal Egyptian writer Tarek Heggy predicts that if the U.S. abandons Iraq to those now dispatching suicide bombers, by 2015 “Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan & Pakistan (at least) will be in the hands of radical Islamists with at least two nuclear powers among these countries.”

Unimaginable? Sure – just as President Clinton could not imagine that the terrorists who bombed the World Trade Center in 1993 would, within less than a decade, acquire the skills to turn both buildings into rubble; just as President Bush, when he unveiled that “Mission Accomplished” banner four years ago, could not imagine that the Iraq war was only just beginning.

When the U.S. went into Iraq, it was said that failure was not an option. The consequences would be too dire. Today more and more people believe failure is the only option. The consequences be damned.

If we have met our match on the mean streets of Baghdad, there is no reason to delay the inevitable. But there is now a new U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus. He is pursuing a new and different strategy. It is not just a “surge.”

Retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey, a frequent critic of the Bush administration, recently returned from Iraq. He calls the situation there “grim” but concludes there is a “basis for hope” – indications that Petraeus and his troops may be learning to fight and win a 21st century war.

Because defeat in Iraq would, McCaffrey writes, “imperil U.S. interests for a decade or more,” he urges support “for this one last effort to succeed,” adding that it will take only till the end of summer to determine whether that is possible.

Members of Congress should consider his argument – whatever the polls show.

Get with it, already...
Is it anything like,"I voted for the war, before I voted against it?" Harry Reid and the left only performed lip sevice to get where they are and their supporters will not say that, in fact, they were lied to. And it was that darn Bush's fault. Will any thinking liberal say that Feinstein was wrong and ask her to resign from the senate not just that committe where her hubby was raking in the $$$(gasp!) he was capitalizing-where is the outrage you hypcrites???But, no- you haven't even seen it in the MSM. Will anyone say that Red Nancy shouldn't be over in Syria as a foreign policy expert? No, they'll drool at her feet for the treason she commits and shite all over GWB. But, they'll read the MSM crap where Syria says it will have peace talks and She becomes glorified...until they sit down and accomplish nothing and add some appeasement to the list. It makes me physically sick. But I still beleive even with these people our troops can do it...

Commiekoolaid
Put down the crack pipe. If we had OBL's head on a pikestaff, how much do you think it would deter the Jihadists- they'd try to make him a marytr. BTWAH OBL was emboldened by our cuntlike exit from Somalia. There's a thing called the real world. I suggest you experience it before commenting on events that occur there.

Terrorism, the will of the people
Every time a Democrat opens their mouth, we hear the will of the people. Resolutions and timetables, will of the people. Hate your country, will of the people. Hate President Bush, will of the people. Undermind the troops mission in Iraq, will of the people. Nancy Pelosi going to Syria, will of the people. Pelosi acting like she's not only Speaker of the House, but President as well, will of the people. Patrick Fitzgerald uses politics over law in the Scooter Libby trial, will of the people. Gonzales must resign, shouts Chuck Schumer, will of the people. The November elections was about the war in Iraq. How is it, the Democrats are using the win in November to mean, all Americans are now as unpatriotic as the Democrats, and all Americans now want to see defeat in Iraq, and hate President Bush. Where does it end with the Democrats in defining the win in November and it's true meaning to American's. The November elections proved only one thing, terrorism is the will of the people. Killing Americans is the will of the people. Cutting funds is the will of the people. Undermining President Bush on National Security and the war in Iraq, is the will of the people. Weakening this nation is the will of the people. Hating your country is the will of the people. Never standing and protecting your country against terrorism is the will of the poeple. If it was the will of the people to get out of Iraq, get out and please those who have made hating this country, President Bush, and our troops, the happiest people in the world. After all no one matters to the Democrats, but those who hate this country, President Bush, and our troops.

Red State
I was in the Military, thanks and is against my nature to say it's the President's fault in a time of war.
And need I say that the lefties are the ones emboldening the enemy, get your stuff straight. GWB has stood his ground, period. The Army Times is fine...But, I personally feel there are many other places to get my news. Like the soldiers on the ground that I know and not just the MSM. Have you tried other sources? Have you tried looking at things more positively? Probably not, from what I see. My fault in life is I choose to see the glass as half full rather than empty...What other choice do I have, unless I want to put forth a defeatist, negative attitude. People are not generally attracted to negativity if you get my drift.

Karen
Let's see, I am guessing you are about 12 in your adult body...and what of your party? They have made promises they do not keep which continues to embolden the enemy...not to mention that would like us in Darfur for what? For f-ing what? "The Human Decency". I know, we are showing none of that at all in Iraq or Afghanistan, are we? We just have to keep fighting the liberal enemy from within. Get lost or you'll become my newest Monkey girl...go drop your guano and do your screeching on Daily Kos, Huffpo and Dem Underground. You can roll around in all the brain excrement that you don't seem to possess inside your head. Ba-bye.

Embedding with the enemies
It is not Bush's fault, it is the fault of the Democrats not supporting our President on every turn.
President fought the Democrats to give us tax breaks which gave us more money in our pockets, more home owners, more jobs. record high stock market........

karennkc, you need to watch and listen to more then just liberial medias. Look at what the Dems are doing, fishing for anything to make Bush look bad. Keeping the Republicans busy fighting false charges instead of getting things done in DC. What about the Dems that got just a slap on the wrist for their crimes? Flip-flopping on issues, was for the war before they wereagainst it, was for supporting the troops before they are not.........

We are one America, it is about time we act like it!

karennkc
Being this stupid oughta HURT!

Just who in the world do you think EVERY perident puts into powerful positions when he is elected, the dog catcher from Buzzard Breath, Oklahoma?

If being so ignorant doesn't hurt, it ought to at least be illegal! At the very least, you shouldn't be able to post on a web site with educated people.

What an idiot! Go back and play with KOS Kids. At least you can share your IQ's and perhaps get 10 of you together that would add up to 100!

karennkc
You are 100% correct.

Bush's biggest failure
coolaid- What does As a person who grew up in the military mean? You were an Army Brat? Also, the Army Times is a subsidiary of Gannett which also owns USA Today. In other words, it's just another paper who's targeted audience is soldiers.

Karenkc- Class envy of the rich, that great liberal standby. How many examples are needed to show you that Socialism and Communism are failures?

Apparently Bush's biggest failure was the No Child Left Behind Act. The above are only a couple examples of those that obviously got left behind.

Bush's WORST mistake?
Trying to appease Liberals.
Bush was elected to CHANGE the way our Nation was being trashed by Liberals, not help them trash it.
It is not possible to compromise with a Liberal and Republicans were not elected to office to let Liberals continue business as usual.

Relocate troops to Okinawa?
I think Abscam Jack Murtha is too cowardly to bring them home where they can vote in person and he can't throw their ballots away.

Retreat from Iraq would be a grave military blunder.
Iraq is the main battlefield of the war against Radical Islam.
A U.S. Retreat would be a major victory to the enemy and the same ground would eventually need to be retaken at a much greater loss of both American and Iraqi lives.

Gotta go with Lynne here
The only time the words "Thinking" and "Liberal" should go together is when you're describing someone who's stuck in the drivethru because they can't decide if they want fries with their order!!!!

Failure
Vote GOP in 2008

Scary Harry
If you have any doubts about the need for term limits just observe Scary Harry Reid. This guy is a disgrace to Nevada, with any luck he will be on the outside looking in after the 2010 election. This guy has the brains of a squirrel and the personality of a house plant, how he ever made it in politics remains a mystery.

polls
Whenever poll results are published the wording of the questions should be published. You can ask a question in such a way as to get the answer you want, and it is done all the time, especially concerning the war

Poll questions
Here's one. Do you think it's possible for a frightened, greeedy president who thinks he's on a mission from God be anything but an incompetent kool-aid server.

Failure, and Loss, promoted for Gain.
The Dems are speculating they won the majority because America was against the war. Unreliable poll results tell them so. Polls that do not question the total electorate, only chosen areas. They do not take into account the votes they received by scare tactics. The votes from factions in our society who cast their vote for Dems because they were afraid of loss. There were many patriotic Americans among that voting block who understand we need to fight this fight. These people voted to fight loss of, or for a greater amount of, personal benefit. The left used the American public to gain status, and power, as they caused turbulance among those of limited power. This article shows the speculative actions of theoretic politicians. The Dems are not in office because the U.S. voted to end this war. Their in office because of their speculative scare tactics.

Ever hear the word "brevity"
Shut your pie-hole already, Karen. You aren't getting paid by the word.

Afghanistan
I find it annoying that you continue to conflate Iraq (secular Government overthrown, religious conflict unleashed) with Afghanistan (Religious government overthrown, tribal violence simmering)

You suggest that a withdrawal from Iraq would embolden the bad elements elsewhere but the fact remains that the resources being slowly ground down in Iraq would have been put to much better use in fighting the actual war on terror instead.

The shallow claims that all we need is another Freedman unit of time in order to complete the mission ring hollower with every passing month. The support for the Iraqi mission isn't wavering because Americans aren't serious about the war on terror. It's wavering because they ARE.

INSANITY -- Let's arm the Saudis!
First we armed the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, and now we're going to arm Saudi Arabai's radical Wahhabis!?!?

Is anyone still at their desk in Washington D.C.?

Report: Israel Tries to Scuttle Deal
by Laurie Copans
AP, April 5, 2007

Israel has pressed the United States not to offer a major weapons deal to its Gulf Arab allies for fear it would DAMAGE ISRAEL'S MILITARY DETERRENT in the Middle East, Israeli government officials said Thursday...

U.S. officials told The New York Times that the Israelis are concerned about the possible transfer of PRECISION-GUIDED WEAPONS that would vastly upgrade the striking ability of Saudi warplanes...

The deal with the Gulf countries is slated to reach between $5 billion and $10 billion, if all the TANKS, WARSHIPS, & ADVANCED AIR DEFENSE SYSTEMS being discussed are included, The Times said.

My,oh my, what a bile-ridden old hag you must be. Obviously you don't have any friends, so you can devote all your time to writing the drivel that you do. Do us all a favour - get a life!

THE CHOIR AND REPETITION
I BEG TO APOLOGIZE AND I KNOW THAT I PREACH TO THE CHOIR. THE FRUSTRATION FELT BY SO MANY ABOUT EMBARRASSMENT, INCONVENIENCE, DESTRUCTION AND DELAY THAT HAS BEEN CAUSED BY SO FEW FOR SO MANY IS INCREDIBLY HARD TO BEAR. IT TEST THE PATIENCE OF OUR FORM OF GOVERNMENT TO THE VERY LIMITS, IT CAUSES HEART ACHE TO THOSE WHO ARE WILLING DEFEND THIS NATION THAT WILL PAY WITH THE ULTIMATE PRICE, YET WE ARE SWORN TO DEFEND THIS IGNORANCE AND SPEECH.

WE ARE AT PRESENT SADDLED WITH GREAT OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME BUT WHEN HAS THIS NATION NOT HAD ADVERSITY AND WHEN HAVE WE EVER BACKED DOWN AND ACCEPTED DEFEAT? THIS NOW IS ANOTHER OF THOSE TIMES WHEN WE ARE BEING PUT TO THE TEST OF WHETHER OR NOT WE ARE WILLING TO AGAIN PLACE OURSELVES IN THE LINE OF FIRE. SO WE SHALL.

THE PRESENT LEADERSHIP IS WEAK AND STRAINED, THE ELECTED OFFICIALS THAT HAVE REAL STONES ARE FEW AND THE ONES THAT FLY AGAINST ALL REASON ARE EVIDENT AND PORTRAYED BY THE MEDIA AS HERO FOR THE SELLING OF NEWSPRINT AND THE SELL OUT OF THIS COUNTRY. IT'S TIME TO PURGE A NUMBER OF THESE WHO PREACH A FORM OF SICK DISSENSION VERGING ON TREASON, THAT AIDS OUR SWORN ENEMIES. IT'S TIME FOR A MAJOR POLITICAL ENEMA AND TO WASH THE MOUTHS OF THOSE WHO ARE DISENGAGED FROM THE TRUTH AND LAW WITH HARSH SOAP.

THE ISSUES OF THE WAR ON TERRORISM, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, CORRUPT JUDICIARY, OVER BEARING TAXATION, LOSS OF MORAL, ETHICAL DIRECTION, BRAINWASHING OF OUR CHILDREN TO ACCEPT SOME FORM OF TYRRANY OR THER THAN THE INCENTIVES OF FREEDOM, ARE ALL IN THE MIX OF FRUSTRATIONS TO BE NAMED.

I AM SURE THRE ARE MANY OF YOU WHO CAN THINK OF MORE INSULTS TO ADD TO THIS GROWING LIST.

Anybody Who Actually THINKS:
Cicero was a smart man. Too bad there aren't any on the left who are smart enough to read him.

POI: Not that I'd want to be here, but I'd just LOOOOVVVVE to see what the left-lunatics do when they succeed and we are defeated by the Islamofascists and the SOROS AND DAILY KOS run-of-the-mill fascists among us. Do "they" think they are going to escape with their heads? Fools. Fools. Fools. If you don't want to fight for your country or even stand up for your country, FIND ANOTHER COUNTRY WHERE YOU'LL BE COMFORTABLE and go there!!!! Get your treasonous, dishonorable, stupid arses out of America and take all your friends with you!

TSK, TSK, TSK
Obviously, when fact can't be found, karen will substitute outrage, illogic and truth twisting, and cowboy backs her up. BTW, cowboy, I don't believe you're a real cowboy. A REAL cowboy doesn't talk much and when he does, it's usually in SUPPORT of his country. Were you an extra in Brokeback Mountain, maybe?

Anyway, I digress. The point I would like to make here is that for all of your pseudo "research" (the Times - gimme a break) you exhibit a total ignorance for the groundwork for our current situation

Let's take, for example, Jimmy-the-Peanut Carter. Wasn't it he who originally emboldened the Islamofascists we now have to fight because his spine was like jello when the first hostages were taken in Iran. Americans they were! They languished for 444 DAYS while the gutless Demoncrap President sat shaking in his Oval Office chair.

Then there was our guy, Clinton. What a piece of work. It was HE who sat by while our embassies, the first WTC bombing, the Cole, etc., etc., and DID NOTHING! He WAS OFFERED BIN LADEN ON A SILVER PLATTER THREE TIMES! But, he "didn't know what to do with him". That spineless jellyfish! Typical Demoncrap.

So, don't shoot off your vituperous rantings about Mr. Bush (who INHERITED this god-awful mess) and expect him to pull a miracle out of his backsides. IT AIN'T POSSIBLE. No matter who he is. He has to work with the cards dealt him by the last idiot in office!

The current crop of Demoncraps are so pissed off because they lost the last two elections that they have decided they would do anything and everything to pull this President down. Talk about "cooperation" and "working together" - name one incident where they have not totally name-called, made fun of, voted against anything he wanted, hauled anybody with an "R" behind their name into court on trumped up, exhaustive, EXPENSIVE TO TAXPAYERS litigation and investigations for NOTHING while defending the crooks in their own closets. Does Sen. Cold Cash Jefferson ring a bell (to just name one for brevity's sake here). Have the Demoncraps been doing ANYTHING to secure our borders except to hamper and interfere? Have the Demoncraps done ANYTHING about Social Security? Have the Demoncraps done ANYTHING about ANYTHING, except total interference and sabotage of everything the President has tried to accomplish? He's trying to save our lives and the Demoncraps want to lay down with the Islamofascist dogs and lick their backsides in the hopes they will leave us alone. You're pathetic. Why don't you garner some concern about the way this world is going to end up if we lose in Iraq - which your Demoncrap brethen are doing their damndest to see we do.

Nope, it's people like you and cowboy who would rather watch America go down in flames than to stand up and defend her. I'm sure you would defend your mother, father, sister or brother if someone attacked them. IT'S NO DIFFERENT - THIS IS YOUR COUNTRY. GET OFF YOUR USELESS, GUTLESS, LYING PAPER-READING FANNY and defend your country. People like you and cowboy make me sick. I'd just as soon see y'all leave for somewhere else if you think it's gonna be any better. Maybe you better start getting fitted for that Burkha you'll be wearing if we don't win! And I hope you can take 5 times out of your busy day to bow to the East, because THAT'S what you're rooting for!
