Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

A couple of weeks ago, Somali pirates hijacked a cargo ship with 20 American crew members on board. Thank God and the Navy SEALs that they all got out alive. But will Americans be as lucky next time?

During 2008 alone, these thugs raided more than 130 vessels, resulting in 50 successful hijackings and millions of dollars paid in ransoms. With at least five well-organized pirate gangs off the Horn of Africa -- including the al-Shabab militia, which is a group of Islamic extremists that some people compare to the Taliban -- all seeking and splitting the spoils of these sea traders, isn't it time America better protects our merchant mariners in volatile areas, such as off the Somali coast? Isn't it time they are armed with better deterrents than fire hoses, rubber bullets and sonic weapons? Isn't it time our Navy SEALs reach land and cut pirates off at the pass?

Ransoms only enable these hooligans. And negotiations never work with them. We need to cut them off so that no one else goes missing in action. For proof of that, we only need to look back and learn from our revolutionary predecessors. Our Founding Fathers not only demonstrated how we need to rescue our citizens but also instilled the notion within these pirates that America never will appease or tolerate captors and that we never will pay their ransoms again.

Some might not know that America has been dealing with African marauding mariners since our inception. Though it's not a direct parallel, I believe we need to do as Thomas Jefferson did during the Barbary Wars, in which Muslim extremists, or pirates, from the Barbary States (Tripoli, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, which were semi-independent provinces of Turkey) fought many countries, including the new United States, that they considered Christian nations.

While the United States was mopping up from the Revolutionary War, we also were squaring off against largely Muslim pirates in the Mediterranean Sea. These sea bandits cruised the coastlines stealing cargo, destroying villages, and enslaving millions of Africans and hundreds of thousands of Christian Europeans and Americans. Because America was a newborn nation, we had relatively little naval defense. Our rebellion against Britain severed our protection by the Royal Navy. And while France helped during the Revolutionary War, we were on our own as of about 1783. And so our merchant ships were exceptionally vulnerable to attack in and out of the Great Sea. As a result, our cargo and seamen were captured, and our country's leaders were forced to negotiate with the Barbary pirates.

In 1784, envoys were dispatched to secure peace and passage from the Barbary States. Treaties were made. Tributes and ransoms were paid. Our cargo and captives were freed. And our ships traveled safely. But over the next decade and a half, we gave millions of dollars to these radicals, including an estimated 20 percent of our federal budget in 1800! (Despite that, men such as Thomas Jefferson argued vehemently against paying ransoms and tribute; Jefferson believed the only road to resolution would be through the "medium of war.")

America's first four presidents (Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison) each dealt with this east-west conflict of powers to varying degrees. Though numerous negotiations and treaties were made, including the Treaty of Tripoli (1796-97), Tripoli (in present-day Libya) still declared war against the U.S. in 1801. It sometimes is called America's first official war. The Founders believed in a foreign policy of noninterventionism, but Jefferson realized that protecting America's borders also meant protecting American lives and property overseas.

He confessed to Congress in 1801 that he was "unauthorized by the Constitution, without the sanction of Congress, to go beyond the line of defense," but he still ordered a small fleet of warships to the Mediterranean to ward off attacks by the Barbary States. Marines and warships were deployed to the region. That eventually led to the 1805 surrender of Tripoli. It would take another decade, however, to defeat those pirates completely, or, should I say, cause them to retreat until a distant time when they would attack our country again.

America's victory back then over those sea radicals is commemorated today in "The Marines' Hymn," with the words "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, we fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea."

The voices of our forefathers cry out from the Barbary Wars in the hopes of imparting some wisdom to us. As the adage goes, we either will learn from history's mistakes or be doomed to repeat them.

Wishy washy President
I dont think Obama has what it takes to stand up to these thugs. He has no Idea what it means to be American since his fomative years were spent outside the U.S. and raised as a muslim.

Thomas Jefferson had the right approach. Another great president we should also think about...What would Reagan do?

Chuck Norris vs. Pirates
It was once believed that Chuck Norris actually lost a fight to a pirate, but that is a lie, created by Chuck Norris himself to lure more pirates to him. Pirates never were very smart.

(On a more serious note, "the Pirate Coast" by Richard Zacks is a good book on the pirate problem at the turn of the 19th century)

we may have a decatur
but no jefferson is in sight. the merchants better arm themselves. any action by the worlds navies will be unreliable at best in the age of the muslim mulatto and the european surrendercrats.

Get ready...
because the "friendship" campaign will further weaken our defenses. I tire of the rhetoric from "non-Right-Wing-Extremists" (remember that we, who want to defend our country and love it enough to allow our children and ourselves to go into war to protect it are the "RWE" people) that believe with all their hearts that just sitting down and REASONING with these pirates, or REASONING with the Muslim extremists, or REASONING with the drug dealers, will turn their hearts to the right and we will all live in peace and harmony, being happy ever after. In theory it works, but in reality it will not. Maybe we can just move these pirates, etc., into their (the reasoners) homes which will give them plenty of time to not only talk to them, and reason with them, but they can actually SHOW them how we live, how we work, how we defend ourselves...ummm...or maybe the pirates, Muslim extremissts and drug dealers already know!

Just as one cannot "reason" with a
rabid dog, one cannot reason with any of the people Rena so aptly named in #4.
The only way to deal with them is to destroy them utterly.

Thanks to the apologist in chief we will now have the spectacle of a trial in NY for the remaining brigand.
His mother has already contacted some somalia supporting org in THIS country, how she found them is anyone's guess and why do we have one anyway? She wants passage here to be with her son the pirate..it'll be on our dime of course.

When it's over, the entire family will be here while he writes his book, appears on oprah and generally cashes in on it....should have done to him what Maynard did to Blackbeard.

The only good pirate is a dead pirate.

Ron Paul Supports Letters of Marque
Congressman Ron Paul supports Letters of Marque and Reprisal, as Thomas Jefferson did and as Chuck Norris suggest.

By the way
Navy 3, Pirates 0

Trial
I see we have a captive pirate and will bring him here for trial. Will we grant him citizenship so he can be provided all the rights and privileges to be defended by a tax-paid lawyer?
In the 'good old days' pirates were tried on a ship and duly hanged from the yardarm.
Regards
Biil

Letters of marque is a good idea
Perhaps we old vets could get one and get an old Navy tin-can out of mothballs go hunting for pirates.

I have enough on my email list to provide the first watch.

Seawolf
Damn, I sure wish I had the power to make it happen. I’m sure a couple of dozen old salty dogs and a cruiser - hell, probably a PT boat – could quickly solve our pirate issue.

Bill
Since our commander-in-chief is a citizen of The New World Order, in his mind. And in which he is a major player, in his mind. All pirates and terrorists are citizens of this New World Order, in his mind, and therefore protected by our Bill of Rights. Does that make sense?

michael
You are right. How can a person raised without American values run our country? Our progressive media are the true pirates!!!!!

Pirates
Thankfully our Navy Seals took out those POS. Somalia should be bombed since there are no innocent people as far as I am concerned and the whole country is without any governmental rule.

Icedog and Seawolf
Go fight the pirates!!! You may be able to get underground backing from corporations that are loosing money. Then come back and make a movie. I'd like to see it. Since I am a mother of 4 and a wife I cannot go and fight the pirates too. God be with you.

Pirates
Arm the merchant ships. It worked in Jefferson's time. We do not need to send in the marines. B-52s with Napalm will be sufficient.

Obama and Pirates
The MSM is giving Obama a lot of good press about his handling this problem. However, from what the military is saying, he blew it. We were not to harm them? We were to let them go? Yeah, right! I expect some courtmartials soon for the officers who gave the command to the Seals to shoot the pirates.

AnnRKey:
Well, you may as well thank God. You certainly can't thank Obama for his failure.

Bill:
Lawyers are already lining up to defend the pirate. One even made the comment that the United States was wrong in capturing him since he was being a good boy at the time. And besides, the U.S. doesn't have jurisdiction there.

Pirate's Daddy:
The captive pirate's daddy has stated that his son is just a kid and that the pirates lied to his son. All they told the boy was that they were going to go get some money. Not a word about how he might get killed. And he's just a boy!

Somehow he forgot to mention that anyone fourteen or older is no longer a boy in Somalia. I wonder what MSM reporter reminded him that his son was just a boy?

Call to action/No internet
Shutting down the internet.........yes obama-nation wants to do this

letters to my senator: About S. 773 & S. 778

These senate bills will give obama the authority to shut down free speech on the internet, email and call your senators. Google S. 773 and S.778 and get the truth.

With the passage of the bills, S. 773 and S.778, will end free speech as we know it protected in the constitution.

Our constitution is under attack daily that makes an Obama dictatorship more likely.

Please stand-up for the citizens that believe in the truths set down by our founding fathers, that we are a nation founded under God, not a man to have this much control over her citizens.

Please stand up for us, that is why you were voted in.

Time to "Impeach" Usurper Obama
Obama will not show his REAL birth certificate because he then would NOT be eligible to run for President. Now, he's shown his weakness in decision making. Capt. Phillips could have been saved the FIRST time he jumped into the Indian Ocean waters if Obama had given "permission" to fire on the armed "killer pirates!" I wish we couldl import the Australian leader over here!

a call to arms?
While I commend the president for his allowing the SEALS to do what they are trained to do, I am afraid that this is an aberration rather than the norm. Obama seems more inclined to apologize to the world instead of saying we are not always right but at least we are always trying, which is more than anyone else is willing to do. Also there are too many other aspects of American life that he is altering and not for the better.

Rabid dogs
You can't "talk" a rabid dog off your leg when it's attacking you. It takes a stick or a gun. That's what the dog respects. Some situations allow pleasant diplomacy to solve problems. Other situations demand a stick, or a gun. And the guts to use them.

Our President's lack of experience in the real world is killing good people.

Plunder the infidile
Chuck, You left out of your article that Thomas Jefferson discovered that the Barbary coast pirates considered their work a "Holy War" --"to kill the infidile and plunder his goods where ever he is found." The atrocities in the Barbary days were horrendous--dismemberment, torture, disembowelment, even the cutting out of the child of live pregnant women. This is why it was so dangerous to travel (esp. for women).

Things are no different today--the Muslims still have the same holy book.

45 caliber

A lesson from several wars:
If the person is old enough and strong enough to pull the trigger, they are old enough to kill you.

If the pirates are smart,
they've figured out that they shouldn't attack US ships, but the American merchant marine is pretty small. The next time they capture a Greek-owned ship, flying the Liberian flag, with Polish officers and a Filipino crew are we going to send the navy to rescue them. Probably not. It's cheaper for the ship owners just to pay a ransom. Most of them don't want to arm their ships, because it costs more and creates all sorts of complications. My guess is they write the ransom off against their insurance anyway.

Also, the US gave the Barbary pirates a bloody nose, but it didn't stop them. That only came with the French conquest of Algeria. And the pirates are entitled to a fair trial, just like Captain Kidd.

Stop pussyfooting around
We need to have an old fashioned duck hunt or a re-creation of the Marianas Turkey Shoot and the pirates as the target.
Until we put the fear of God in them, these attacks will continue. Somalia is basically a lawless country and should be treated as such.
Also, if they are tied with Al-Queda then they should be treated as such.

Packrat:
Also a lesson from several wars: If they are old enough to kill you, they are also old enough to be killed. Too many people here seem to have forgotten that one.

You Don't Get It Still--
These pirates are Kenyan Kommie, B. HUSSEIN Obamas' "Brothers in Islam"!! The Captain of the hi-jacked vessle, would be in Mogadishu, now, if the Navy Commander hadn't DISOBEYED "Barky's" orders, and used the Standing Naval Rules of Engagement. "I will STAND with my Moslem Brothers--" Obama doesn't give a RATZ@$$ about the American People. He is in power, solely to Cripple the U.S.A., using the Constitution [or abusing it], [whichever suits his Nefarious Schemes at the time!!] to the point that the Moslem Brotherhood GANG, already HERE, can Take Over.

When asked...

When asked by FOX News what he intended to do with those Buccaneers, obambi replied, "tuck them under my 'buckin' hat."

Usurper in the Oval Office
A real American president would have taken care of this problem long ago with a few bombs. The enemy is in the White House and slowly dismantling our nation. So, when does the military drop by to hoist the thugs out of DC. or, do we the people need to step in?

.
I was against Iraq because I don't believe they posed a threat to us (argued that point in many Ron Paul related threads during the primaries). On this occasion I definitely side with military force. Military action in this case is completely justified as destroying the pirates directly protects the freedom of individuals. This is the kind of situation that the founders would have found as a justified use of military force.

We The People
We the people will have to step in because those in office don't have the stones to stand up and do the right thing. If this guy is old enough to take up a gun and hold people as hostages for ransom then he is old enough to get shot go jail and pay the price for whatever happens to him. But thanks to mis-informed people we are dealing with an organizer who knows squat about being President of the US. There is only one way to fight the Pirites and thats with the only thing they understand and thats with the use of force. I used to have to fly into Samulia and Mogadishu and there is no government control over anything there. They can't even control the War Lords. We would have to take over the country until they could handle it on their own and I don't see that happening.

Pirate Problem
A layered approach is best. There should first be a UN mandate that all aggression by Somalia and its citizens releases other countries' military to exterminate the pirates at will. A coordinated effort would be preferable, of course, but niceties must be set aside. Another mandate, more draconian, would be that ALL vessels from Somalia may not venture more than three miles from shore or risk being blown up (no searches and other time wasters). Somalia has an extensive coastline so blockading over a long period is probably not do-able. A one time sweep of the whole coastline to destroy all sea going vessels might be a tad easier but it would have to be repeated every six months or so. Privatizing the periodic hunt and destroy missions would be easier than send in expensive warships to do the job. All alleged atrocities from Somalia would be totally disregarded by the world (and maybe even applauded in some circles). That government has no moral standing whatsoever. Private security on targeted shipping is also desirable. Lastly, serious, smart, and sane Nation rebuilding needs to occur in that god forsaken country. Probably a 30 year plan directly tied to properly functioning government.

Pirate Problem II
Pirate Problem: The current state of affairs with piracy is to treat it as a business transaction. The worst of crimes are downgraded to petit acts of misconduct. And what will the pirates do with their ill-gained money besides bacchanalia? They will buy (another business transaction) more and better weapons and assault equipment so they can increase their plundering. The business transactions will continue to escalate until it becomes too onerous to the “victims” of this morally bankrupt methodology and will demand that force be used to remove the self-created threat, a now much greater threat. But wait! It means that another business transaction has to occur as the intervention by force requires specialized equipment and personnel. Never mind that loss of life will occur on the law-abiding side, just keep the business transactions going full bore. Purely disgusting and morally defunct! Solution: For every pirate hung, hang two lawyers with extreme prejudice!

Pirates
I wrote a little side story about the pirates on my unionpuke blog, if your interested, I say the only thing we are missing in this whole story, is a noose hanging off the yardarm, let them dance.

Chuck
Go in and take care of them!

Media: "Teenage Pirate in Custody"
Hearing this reported so many times, I'm starting to think of "teenage" as his first name. Gosh, I hope he's not going to miss this Friday’s sock hop in the school gym.

Seawolf and Icedog
Sounds like a plan..I've a rather beaten up old
Tin Can Sailor, radarman under my roof for ya.
: )

I'm confused
Someone on these topics mentioned Barney Frank was a pirate but I don't understand what she meant.

Get real
Expecting Obama to crack down on black muslims redistributing wealth seems a tad optimistic to me.

Jeff
Barney Frank is an a-- pirate.

Barney Frankless is a Butt Pirate
Cornholer, PeterPuffer

I'm in
I wasn't navy, I was an Army mortarman, but I can still shoot straight. Sign me up! And as far as Court Martials, I wouldn't count on it. What would they charge the officers with? Disobeying orders? According to Obama, they were following his orders. And seeing as how he's got that plastered all over the MSM, how is he now going to claim differently? Trust me, these guys are untouchable, and I love it.

Lewd remarks
Come on! All these despicible remarks show is the lack of real communication skills. Grow up!
