Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Sending nude photos and sexual videos via cell phone (called "sexting") is a fast-growing and dangerous trend among youths. And with spring breaks upon us, YouTube won't be the only one streaming videos during these juvenile siestas.

Sexting is not new, but it is on the rise. Cases are bubbling up all over the country. Just this past week in Virginia, at least two Spotsylvania County students were facing child pornography charges in a sexting case. The naked images of three girls (including an elementary-school student) were discovered on seven phones and traced back to the two accused students.

Last month, high-school girls in Greensburg, Pa., also were charged with child pornography after they sent semi-nude photos of themselves to male classmates.

Other similar incidents have resulted in charges in Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida. Law enforcement has been called out recently to investigate sexting-related crimes by dozens of teens in many states across the nation.

And sexting is not just a male-dominant problem. A new national survey says that at least one-fifth of all youths have sent nude or explicit photos or videos of themselves via cell phone or have posted such images online.

Most astonishing, sexting is becoming a normative part of the dating scene and protocol among youngsters. Marian Merritt, who is Symantec's Internet safety advocate, writes and speaks about issues impacting the online security and safety of kids and families. She writes:

"Teens believe taking and sharing the sexy photo of themselves is a natural progression point in a romantic relationship. It's not just 'step 1, hold hands; step 2, kiss'. Now it's 'step 1. Friend on social network; step 2. Chat on IM or text; 3. Send sexy photos.' Crazy!"

So who's responsible? That's easy. First, there's the juvenile committing the crime. But there are two other culprits, as well -- accomplices to these acts. Who's providing the electronic devices? Who pays the phone bills? Whose names are on the plans? And what examples are these guardians setting as those who frown upon pornography? And thirdly, there's a culture that is moving away from moral absolutes, and that includes calling pornography wrong and even a sin.

So are your kids or grandkids involved in or at risk of sexting? Are they practicing safe cell phoning? Merritt advises parents and guardians to ask their kids these five questions to protect them from this latest strain of cyberporn:

"1. Give me a tour of your cell phone. Any cool features or tricks you can do with your cell phone?

"2. Show me how you take a photo with the phone. How do you send it to another email or phone?

"3. Where do you save the photos? Show me what you've got saved. …

"4. Has anyone ever sent or shown you a sexy photo of themselves or someone else?

"5. Anyone ever asked for your photo? If yes, how did you handle it? If no, what would you do and why?"

How can we stop a sexting proliferation? First, parents no longer should pass out cell phones like pancakes to their families, and parents should monitor how the phones are used. Guardians need to reconsider purchasing cell phones for communication and security when children are using them for seduction and porn. Teens need to be educated about sexual illegalities and immoralities and reminded that if convicted of child pornography crimes, they could face felony consequences and see the words "sex offender" on their juvenile records.

We might live in a technological wonderland, but that doesn't mean it's good to eat from all of its fruits. Most especially, we never should throw up our hands in surrender to marketing and peer pressure to give our kids everything the Joneses have, especially when those things expose them to others' exposing themselves. As a wise man said many centuries ago (well, sort of), "If your cell phone causes you to stumble, cut it off from your family's communication plan."

It's time not only to answer the question "do you know where your kids are this spring break?" but also to know what they're doing with their cell phones.

This is moronic
Let's lock the kids up in prison for their entire lives, or tattoo "SEX OFFENDER" on their foreheads, for doing something that any other kid their age would have done throughout all of human history.

God, I can't wait for these puritan conservatives to die off and leave the world in the hands of the sane.

If thine eyes offend thee ;
Pluck them out! Not remotely likely.

Today; if thine eyes ears, or sensibilities offend thee - force your fellow into submission to your beliefs.

I find it sad, all the way around. The lives that are ruined by unnecessary application of laws irrelevant to the issue upon those who don't yet understand and stranger still - the way blame is being accorded.
Quite the example we are at this end, too.

Don't talk about what you don't know. The student did do exactly what I said - and so did the government. I don't think the government was able to get a conviction but there was the code. And the government admitted publically on television and in newspapers that the code existed. Their argument was that they needed to be able to break codes to see what the enemy was doing. By him releasing it on internet, he was in fact providing it to American enemies. And I'm sure they use it today. But his real intention was to insure the government couldn't read internet transmissions from one American to another.

"sexting"
This is a ridiculous law. All through the years kids have been doing this sort of thing, only the technology has changed. It is incredibly stupid to allow the government to determine and legislate morality and it is disingenuous to call this dangerous. This is a matter for families to deal with, plains and simple. If two kids want to show their parts to each other, they are going to do it and making it a crime is the real criminal act here. Why can we Republicans not see the error of our ways. I agree with Chuck on a lot of things, but he is wrong here, asking for the government to intervene is fiscally liberal, we should not be going on these witch hunts. It's the same as it's always been only the technology has changed, we must open our eyes.

Culture Icons
Kids do this kind of thing because, 1) it's something they can do without their parents knowing and, 2) because they and their peers take their cues in life from what young celebrities are doing.

Few "family friendly" film series have been so well received as Disney's "High School Musical" productions. Yet, the actress in the leading role, Vanessa Hudgens (the same kid whose picture is still plastered over half the school accessories that many schoolchildren own) set off shock waves when she sent off a self-made nude picture of herself to a boyfriend via her cell phone when she was sixteen. Not surprisingly, that picture made its way to the internet. But from Disney, the "first name in family entertainment" came only a carefully worded response... and no consequences.

That young celebrities will do stupid things like this (especially in the immoral climate of today) is only to be expected. (After all, look at the movies child stars are being put in, especially since 2006's "Hounddog" child porn movie.) But when these things are granted legitimacy- either by profit-motivated noninvolvement by studios or actual support by them- kids notice... and emulate. It's their nature to do so.

They can't fully appreciate the moral and physical dangers they subject themselves to by this. That's why they have parents. But parents can't always be there and the youth culture is now all-pervasive. The Industry has become their second parents. Thus, Hollywood inherits a grave moral responsibility that transcends their often degrading practices for profit. They must be held to account and a firm code of conduct re-established. Children must no longer be their financial tools of exploitation.

Look to the Leaders For Bad Role Models
The American people have voted a man into office who won't produce a birth certificate for their review in a court of law or government in violation of Article II, but does the White House care? Heck, no! They voted in a man who used fear mongering to push forward his (or someone else's) stimuls package that gave AIG a pass on bonuses which is written into his own stimulus package and he and Rahm are now blaming and pointing fingers at everyone else because the word got out to the public. He overturned and supports massive abortions and infanticide and stem cell research. Former President Clinton on the other hand was a womanizer and verbally attacked a U.S. military high ranking officer for stating he was a skirt chaser and he used the oval office for more than protecting the American people if you recall the name - Monica - and the others who came out of the woodwork - and Geithner didn't pay his taxes four times - and some of Obama's appointees support pornography - and so on and on and on - judges exposed for porno on their computers - look at the offensive and disgusting cartoons at family hour on TV - and people wonder why kids are having sex and abortions without parental consent or acting out their sexual fantasies and getting themselves in trouble in more than one way? Take a look at the Texas jail where the Chief was having sex with the inmates - good grief, if the leaders have no morals, common sense, integrity, principles, and aren't God-fearing men or are game players who say one thing and do another without conscience or concern for the country's traditions and constitutional laws and Judeo-Christian morals then guess what happens to the rest of the country who are led down the dark path into a black hole. It is what it is because they do what they do without accountability.

Akagi, Post #57
The Japanese weren't smart enought to break the Navajo code talkers during the Second World War. The Japs never did crack that one. You're wrong again Akagi. But,the issue you bring up hasn't got a thing to do with sexting, seduction and spring breaks.

CALLING ALL PATRIOTS
Yesterday I sent - vis certified / registered mail - a copy of Dr. Orly Taitz's law suit demanding that a special prosecutor be appointed to investigate Obama's BC issue as well as the many illegal and criminal activiites engaged in by his thug supporters.

Today I called the Office of the Attorney Genreal - Eric Holder - and left a voice message demanding the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Am I a little scared? Yes. Why? Because Obaman and his minions are ruthless thugs who kill fetuses, harvest brain-cell stems from fetuses, attack private citizens like Joe the Plumber and Rush Limbaugh to name just two... and they LIE.

But the above reasons - among others - is why I want to take on Obama ...

I do not want to live in a nation where the POTUS - especially a fake one - can declare open hunting season on American citizens any time for any reason.

I beleive Obama is NOT a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN of the United States, and is therefore NOT qualified to be POTUS - he is a usurper and an imposter.

If you would like to get in the fight to Preserve, Protect, and Defend the Constittion of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic ...

Then go to Dr. Orly Taitz's website ...

and click on the following link in the upper right hand corner under HOT TOPICS:

About protecting the internet:

Some years ago, a student created a program that could not be decoded except by using a special password set up when it was first run.

========

That is not possible. If you do a binary readout an expert can follow the program where ever it goes.

It is very time consuming and difficult, but I have seen people do it years ago. Of course today when memories in your home computer is equal to all the computer memory in the world back in the '50s and'60s there can be a lot of misleading routines, but the computer can not do anything that is not in it's memory.

And that includes the ability to change the program, while the program is running.

An easy solution
If this kind of hysteria bothers you there's comfort in the fact that a cell phone is not required to get you through those teen years. My generation managed to grow up without them. Imagine that.

I cannot believe this...
Blaming inanimate objects; Television, the internet, cell-phones. Good grief.
You sound like the gun grabbers, "Ban guns and stop crime."
Fools!

"Do not be decieved, Bad company corrupts good morals."

Keep sending your children into the cesspools of public education and you will continue to reap exactly what you are sowing.

Corruption!
Socialist ideology!
Immorality, sloth, selfishness, pride, lust, coveteousness and hatred.
You are getting exactly what you are paying for.

Fools!

I know, I know, the schools in your town aren't bad.

Where in the name of sanity do you think this is going on?

Happy now?

years ago
Kids "played doctor" with each other and "showed each other" their "private parts." While I don't think that such activity is the greatest thing in the world, it was not some dangerous epidemic. The idea that "conservatives" would push these issues to the forefont is pathetic. Why is this such a big deal? Didn't many states allow 12 year olds to marry 100 years ago? Don't some countries allow that now? Why should the state get involved with this. How old was Chuck Norris when his current wife was born -- about 30? Some people would think that is a form of perversion (plus divorcing your wife). Why don't we ask Saudi Arabia how to have a big anti-sex state?

Apologies & Correction
I copied/pasted/posted without reading the entire sentence correctly and did not process the "will get in legal trouble if I stop" caveat.

Re: Mother of 4
"If I, as a parent, am still responsible for feeding, clothing, and housing them and will get in legal trouble if I stop doing so then they are NOT adults."

---

Sure they are. They're just not INDEPENDENT adults.

(Tell me, if you've lived long enough that your offspring are taking care of you -- feeding, clothing, & housing you -- would you cease to be an adult?)

Surely, as intelligent as you are, you understand, however, that "NOT adult" does not equal "child". Childhood ends with adolescence. Developmentally, adolescents are NOT children.

Adolescents playing high tech "show me yours & I'll show you mine" is NOT child pornography.

By all means, let's debate about the impropriety of it, but lets do it with the correct terms INSTEAD of couching it in emotionally charged hyperbole.

Nonsense, Akagi,
See my previous post.

"If teens are adult enough for sex then they are adult enough to get jobs, enter the military, sign binding contracts, drink, smoke, gamble, drive, and provide their own living completely independent of their parents.

If they aren't adult enough for any one of those other marks of adulthood then they aren't old enough for sex."

Only a person who has a vested interest in teen sex could dispute the fact that sex is for adults, not kid.

If I, as a parent, am still responsible for feeding, clothing, and housing them and will get in legal trouble if I stop doing so then they are NOT adults.

There's no having it both ways at once.

Children
"there are too may people posting on here that are defending the act of children having sex and getting into sexual situations..."

Care to define the term "children." 150 years ago these "children" would be married and having real children. Sorry people that drive deadly machines down the roads aren't children.

45
I'd love to see a source on your claims.

You can get pretty strong encrpytion like PGP. The agents of the f'ing government will still probably be able to crack it. Sorry, but military level encrpytion that could stop law enforcement or at least NSA/CIA is probably beyond non-State actors ability.

You might stop some idiots in a local police department, but I bet the State crime lab can break almost any encryption not produced by say a state agency. Get in tight with say the Russian intelligence service or Chinese intelligence, they probably could give you something that would be very difficult for the US to break--but all codes can be broken. Ask the Japanese about that one.

About protecting the internet:

Some years ago, a student created a program that could not be decoded except by using a special password set up when it was first run. It was designed to pass information across the internet that no one else could read. It was also to be used to prevent people from getting onto web sites (like porn) who didn't have the authority to be there (like kids). The government ruled that the program was top secret and that the writer of the program had released it without permission - even though he released it without cost prior to the government knowing it existed. The last I heard was that they were planning to prosecute him for it. The reason? They wanted nothing to go aross internet that they could not look at themselves.

So don't expect to see any preventions installed on internet for any reason.

Head in sand syndrome
It is rampant in our society today. Parents do not know where their children are or what they are doing, they want to believe they are always telling them the truth. They are CHILDREN, they live with their parents until they are 18 for a REASON, they cannot make rational, informed decisions, that is the parents job.

My 13 year old daughter has a no frills 'pay as you go' phone, and must do chores and work at our business to earn minutes. We homeschool, so teaching values and morality is a part of her education. Unlike the government schools where smoking, drinking, drugs and sex is blatant and accepted. A drive by our local Middle school shows me 13 and 14 year old girls standing on the side walk dressed like hookers, smoking cigarettes and 'making' out with boys, it is a disgusting display.

Being a parent means making sacrifices, something many parents don't seem aware of. If you want to be a good parent, if you want your kids to be safe and get a good, moral education, HOMESCHOOL! At the very least shell out the cash for private education. Your kids need you, don't let them down.

Influence of Parents
For those of you who thing a parent can't have as much or more affect thant the schools and peer pressure, well too bad your children will be lost.

My parents taught my brothers and sister and I that abstinence before marriage and fidelity in marriage were God's commandments. All six of us have lived that.

Give kids a little more credit. Lots of them respect themselves and others enough to be chaste.

Being unchaste is so wrong because it destroys your soul. Sex is a very emotional and intimate act. It is also a powerful manipualtive tool. Teens are the most vulnerable age and this time of life is confusing and tough enough without throwing sex in.

Parents talk to your kids before they are old enough to be in a bad situation. Monitor their lives. They'll know you care.

Blame the programmer #2

The Internet was designed by a programmer, and those fingerprints can be seen everywhere. Of course no one could guess what was going to happen to the Net, and no one was expected to use the net, except a programmer. There was absolutely no provisions made to protect the data on the net, or to capture the criminal.

I can and have gone on about this for 50 years, and I see no sign of anyone solving the problem.

We must protect the internet, we must punish the criminal minded who are knowledgeable about computers. This is serious.

And by the way, who is responsible for all those things a cell phone can do, who makes your car horn blow when you lock the door? A powerful programmer, who will brag about his power.

I once suggested to a computer game company president that he include some educational activity on his game, and I thought he would hit me with his tennis racket. He was in the game business, not in a good business.

If you read the stories of what they hope to do in the coming years with computers, it is criminal, and must be stopped.

The other day I stopped to see one of the computer pioneers I knew 50 years ago at RAND Corp. When I looked up his address on Google, I saw photos of his house. Doesn't that make you feel safe!

Blame the programmer #1

I discovered and complained about this problem in about 1956. At that time there were maybe a dozen or so computers in the world, and as I taught people what a computer was and how to use it, I could, in just a few short months, see the gleam in the eye of the now powerful person using the computer.

Remember, those days no computer could send or receive data from any other computer, so it was just the power of the program they were working on that mattered.

We had hundreds of psychologists working at the RAND Corp., and some of them became addicted early in the game, and when I complained, I got laughed out of the room.

And one of the things we have learned since, is that a programmer will do nothing to make sure another programmer can not change what has been done.

A plumber in Romania could not use his pipe wrench to mess up the plumbing in the Pentagon, but a couple of kids in the Romanian mountains got into the Pentagon’s computer.

No time in history has anyone had the power over the world, as a computer person, sitting in the mountains somewhere, with a computer attached to the Internet.

Once in a while we hear of a hacker who has been captured, tried, and sent to jail. But that is all we hear.

It is like a bank that has been robbed over and over, and once in a while they find the robber. But never does anyone think about going to the Vault and see if the door locks.

What libs. don't get is the futures
of these kids could be ruined forever. A charge of child pornography is a felony and a killer of future plans and aspirations. You can't live in huge numbers of places, will be monitored by parole officers, and won't be loved by your neighbors.

All medical, legal, and educational, let alone a uncountable private business, careers require deep background checks and criminal histories. Their contracts all also involve morals clauses.

If you show up on a background search fondling your 13-year-old breasts 15 years later when you are 28 and looking to be second grade teacher, you aren't going to get the joh.

You may not get into the college of your choice, as admissions people are now often searching MySpace and FaceBook pages looking for stupid postings of unacceptable images.

You aren't even going to be able to drive a school bus or be a crossing guard.

NYC cops cannot pose in Playboy. High school volley ball coaches cannot have naked pix of their jr.-high selves posted on websites.

All life has consquences and the consequences down the road can be you can't get a job as a greeter at a courthouse becaue floating around in the ether are your own pictures stripping for your 14-yr-old idiot boyfriend 10 years ago.

And for those who think this activity is really ok, you need a frontal lobotomy--oh, excuse me. You already had one.

John
We all did things our folks didn't want us doing. As a school child of the 50's & 60's we did our share of No, No's. But not to the extent of the kids now days.

Sex education was a thing your parents talked to you about, not the schools in second grade. Not Al Gore telling our kids that your parents are wrong and don't know what you do.
This is just the tip of a very big iceberg as parents have lost most control over their children's education. Some parents have higher
expections of their children then the education system.

Retired art teacher, know what I speak of....

Glass Bead Maker
Neither you nor your friend have any idea what your friend's kid is up to. I know it all sounds good and wholesome, but you really can not be certain all these precautions are having any effect at all.

The nation is filled with parents who thogut their kids were at the library doing homework.

Taft, Taft, Taft.
Why not take your hate-filled postings to your hero websites, Daily Krap, Moveleft, etc. I ask that my fellow right-thinkers please not give legitimacy to this "person" by responding. Maybe it will go away.

skyrere
there are too may people posting on here that are defending the act of children having sex and getting into sexual situations, and sending sexy nude pictures of themselves to people.
We aren't going to convince them that they are wrong. They will just continue to think we are stupid for trying to teach our children to behave better and have respect for themselves.
I didn't have respect for myself. In fact, I hated myself. I am working on getting over that. :)
It does not matter if they want to do it or that teens have been wanting to do it since the dawn of time. It is our job as parents to steer them and guid them and do our best to help them reach adulthood without destroying themselves before they get there.

Internet Access for Children
I agree with the last poster. Additionally, there ought to be a way to control what children are allowed to view on the web. Aren't there parental controls for the Internet similar to what they have for TV? I would put the computer in the family room AND install software that limits where they can go online.

If they *must* carry a cell phone, I would give them one that does what phones are supposed to do. Call.

Porn and Pedophilia is in the heart of .
Technically it's not illegal in the U.S.A., just highly controversial. Children modeling nude can be seen in the works of Jock Sturges, David Hamilton, and Sally Mann just to name three photographers. The photo books of these photographers can be purchased through out the country.

The controversy over children modeling nude stems from a dispute over what constitutes pornography. To some people any form of nudity or even a suggestive pose while fully clothed is pornographic. To others anything short of intercourse is considered erotic art and not pornography.

A general rule of thumb is if the subject of the art is not involved in any form of sexual act either with another person or on their own. Is not in a pose that causes the eye to be drawn directly to the buttocks, genitals or breasts, then it can pass as art and not pornography.

Jim 6:38 and 39...
but is it right? Is it smart? Is it responsible? Do the parents/guardians have a right to know? Maybe you need to grow up a tad.

So what's new?
Why is everyone so surprised at the rise in sexuallly explicit photo's of teens being passed around? Hell, in New Jersey our oldest daughter's child comes home and tells her mother that some of the girl students are giving free *&*&*& jobs inthe back lot. Teen girls today do not consider oral sex, SEX. A losing battle folks, until parents start taking control.

Parental supervision required!
I agree with Mr. Norris 100%.
And while we're at it—how about NOT allowing your child to have a television in their bedroom!
Children do NOT need free unedited access to the much of what is on TV—most notably garbage like those reality shows on MTV.
Secondly, children don't NEED cell phones.
They need parents with morals & strong convictions & the ability to say NO! There are phones at school that children can use if they need to call a parent. The cell phones in classrooms are a distraction.
Thirdly, put the computer in the family room where you, the parent, can see it.
If you don't agree—try googling the word porn & millions of sites will become immediately available at the click of a mouse.
You would not knowingly allow your child in the same room with a pedophile—would you?
If you're not adequately supervising them—you are!

Good Article Chuck
It is called personal reasonability! I am so proud of my daughter-in-law. My 14 year old grand daughter has a phone that dials 911 and home only. She is not allowed on social sites till she is 16. Her camera is in her MP3 player and can not be text-ed anywhere.

Where are the parents responsibility here? Obama plays right into these non-involved parents, with cradle to college care of the children. Parents will find out they will have no control over what their kids do, say and study.......radicals on the horizon, indoctrinated children by 2020.

Child Pornography
Incidently, there are several girls and boys being charged as child porn makers for sending pictures of themselves to others. I know of it happening in three states now. Do you want your kids to be listed as sexual preditors the rest of their lives? Make it plain to them. Too many are saying, "that isn't child porn! It is only a picture of me." But if the child is below 18, it is child porn.

TAKE YOUR KIDS BACK
Moral topics are just as or more important than financial topics. This topic needs more coverage & parents need more help in this area. Thank you, Chuck, for writing this article. Parents: Get the new DVD, called "The Kinsey Syndrome" created by Dr. Judith Reisman. Get your kids to watch it so they will understand how unbearably uncool & disgusting the current sexual behavior is. No one will ever be the same after watching this DVD. You have very little to lose by just following this suggestion.

And The Difference
between this and "I'll show you mine if you will show me yours" is what?

Your argument is not with technology, hollywood, TV, liberals, or cell phones. Your argument is with human nature. Good luck winning that one.

ADLoggy - Post #20
My sentiments exactly!

RE I don't use cell phones
Absolutely! Whatever happened to a phone being just a phone. No pictures, games, internet, chat, texting, etc. If kids absolutely need to make calls to their parents, etc., they can use the phone the old fashion way -- to call.

Taft:
You could boycott Fox and start to learn about the real world ONLY if you shut your television completely off. None of the stations tell about the real world. They only tell you their version of it. To learn what the real world is like, you need to get out into it. You should try it. There is a lot of real nice world out there no one is really using. They are all inside watching television.

I don't use cell phones
I had one for a couple of years and used it perhaps five or six times. I don't particularly like for people to call me all the time. I think one of the main reasons that people have cell phones is because they believe they are so important that people are waiting in line to talk to them. That is particularly true of teens and even pre-teens. I know of kindergarteners who are given cell phones by their parents. Why?

What we need in cell phones is one that simply makes phone calls. No pictures, no games, no texting. But, then, I'm a trouble maker.

To Taft
Yes, and it seems that the Red states have more pornography-based business and consume more pornography than the Blue States. Google "red state pornography" for many hits on this topic. This raises an interesting point to consider. Some on this thread think that secularism and political liberalism lead to sexting. By that logic, evangelistic Christianity and political conservatism must lead to love of pornography.

Taft
Have you seen the cable news ratings lately. Go to the Drudge Report today he has them posted. Your hero Olberman isn't faring too well.

Boycott FOX
" And thirdly, there's a culture that is moving away from moral absolutes, and that includes calling pornography wrong and even a sin."

Try telling that to Fox New's Rupert Murdoch, who makes money on porn.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55 616

We could boycott Fox News and start to learn about the real world.

Palin
"Teens believe taking and sharing the sexy photo of themselves is a natural progression point in a romantic relationship."

No wonder Bristol says her mom's abstinence only charade is so foolish.

Moral deccline
Since the sexual revolution of the 1960's, the "left" has encouraged moral relativism so as to achieve their political agenda. Now, we are seeing how the devaluing of morals in society that has started with adults, now has extended to the children in our society. If adults think porn is acceptable, and that perception is relayed to kids, then the kids won't think sexting is wrong. Sex and nudity are widely accepted as apart of television and movies today, and until society sets higher standards for these industries, then our citizens including the youth will continue being demoralized.

jim, jim, jim
You wrote: "You will never convince me that a young girl willingly sending a nude photo to a friend is porn. "

Do you really think that the boyfriend who gets the nude pics won't get sexually aroused or at least titillated looking at them? If so, then those pics are porn. Pornography is any form of picture or literature that causes sexual titillation by violating society's standards of modesty. In case you haven't figured it out, the nude pics do just that.

Sexting
Here is my advice (from someone who might have considered doing this when I was young): 1) Mothers make sure you are dressing in a modest way (young girls will notice if you reveal your body; showing cleavage may seem "innocent" to you but it provides an excuse for girls to use their bodies as well to gain attention or look sexy 2)Fathers, make sure you give your daughters affection; let them know they do not have to behave in such a way in order to gain "love" or acceptance by boys 3)For Christian parents: Teach your children by example and word that they are responsible to a Higher Authority than you, their parent. (This is the only thing that kept me from many "vices." Live the truth before them continually and consistently. And single parents, you can be successful too; (my mother raised 5 children without the help of her husband who was never around and who divorced her when I was 13.) The rewards of teaching your children to be pure are far superior to all the things you can give them!

Great Column
Yeah right! It's the cell phones that are causing people to sin, and if we take away the cell phones, then the character of our children will improve. Yeah, right :(

Where's John Stossil when you need him? I need someoene to say, "Give me a break."

Mother of 4
I agree with you. Unfortunately, culture today inundates kids with sex and sexuality. I have seen PG-13 movies that would have been R when we were younger. Family channels' afterschool shows are venues for teenage sexuality. M-TV is a sex fest and its entertainment value is worthless except for watching scantly dressed or semi-nude dancing by shapely women/men who can't really sing well.

BTW, before Dr Douglas corrects you... pedophilia is concerned with pre-pubescent children and pederasty is concerned with post-pubescent children. Both are illegal for adults to engage in though. Like you said, "a measure of depravity."

Great comments.

I have a good friend whose "Daddy" taught her to NEVER put onto paper (or photo paper) anything she wouldn't want to see on the front page of the NY Times.

It was good advice then (the 70's), and it is still good advice today.

Everything you have described can be directly attributed to secularism, moral reletivism, academia, psychology, modern feminism, statism, socialism, political correctness and materialism.

Or in one word...Liberalism. What a wonderful concept they have bestowed upon America.

A Measure of Depravity,
It is a measure of the complete depravity of our culture that within 16 posts in response to this column two different people have responded to defend the practice of children being sexually active and sending nude pictures to each other.

Setting aside all religious and ethical arguments about marital sex vs. adultery, ...

Is it not possible for everyone who isn't a pedophile to agree that sex is an activity for ADULTS?

If teens are adult enough for sex then they are adult enough to get jobs, enter the military, sign binding contracts, drink, smoke, gamble, drive, and provide their own living completely independent of their parents.

If they aren't adult enough for any one of those other marks of adulthood then they aren't old enough for sex.

And a person doesn't have to agree with social conservatives and religious attitudes about abstinence until marriage to grasp that basic idea.

Easy Fix
Buy a basic phone with pre-paid minutes and no camera or internet service installed. Then they can call you and you them.

Make sure you are the password protected administrator to their computer. You can then check the history and files they have saved. Your house...your rules.

Finally be a parent not a friend.

Ummm...excuse me
When Newsweek magazine writers, (see Hagelin today) suggest the schools begin teaching more about the, "...pleasurable side of sex," and to roll back on the, "...eww factor regarding graphic photos of STD's" then I seriously doubt parents can be an effective deterrent to this in any ultimate sense.
Legislators demand the establishment of compulsory attendance. School Boards demand curriculum content. Law enforcement looks for every imaginable way to generate revenue for the legislature and the local community.
Of course, "Teaching abstinence just, doesn't work."
So the 'state' and the 'lawmakers' establish the rules. Then when hormone infested teens are shown every aspect of sexual activity, encouraged by the 'authority' of the teacher, the schools, the state and pummeled by peer pressure, all while being told their parents are, "out of touch," we then want to act shocked. Shocked that sexually-mature, young adults are seeking the pleasures of sex from the teacher or the minister or their circle of friends.
So we are then told, we need more and better education; we need more laws; We need bigger prisons. Naturally, more money to fund this garbage.
Yet at the same time, the parents are to blame.
If you ask me, the parents are to blame for sending their children into these cesspools called public education. I know, I know, your schools aren't bad. It's those other ones. It's the phones. It's the computers. It's Hollywood.
We have a society gone berserk.
Happy now?

Also, to the naysayers out there
Perhaps a girl sending a pic to her boyfriend may not offend your conscience, but be very assured that the recipient will not keep it to himself. It will be shown to multiple friends and will likely find its way onto the Internet as an electronic file that will never disappear. After it is e-mailed around a few times, it can very easily find its way onto a listserv that specializes in "amateur porn" and now your sweet underage daughter is now immortalized electronically as a porn queen and an object for self-pleasure of viewers worldwide. Or she tries to get a scholarship or a job and her pic pops up and blows her chances. Or she goes to the beach for Spring Break and because she is in the habit of revealing herself for folks, she pulls her top up for someone with a video camera and she is a video star making money for someone else (ala Girls Gone Wild).

But that's not such a big deal right?

Here's a crazy idea...
How about parents take responsibility for their kids and not pay for texting at all? It is replete with all sorts of problems, most of which involve immature choices by teens. No text messaging, no sending inappropriate pictures, no texting during class or while driving, and no sitting around all afternoon wasting the day pecking away on the phone. Call me old-fashioned (I'm only 33), but parents need to quit treating their kids like fellow grown-ups and place some restrictions on what they do.

Jack
It's not hurting anybody?

Tell that to the teenagers charged with child pornography. If convicted, they face jail time or at least time in a juvenile detention center, as well as possibly being labelled as sex offenders, a stigma that will follow them for a long time.

Sure, sounds pretty harmless to me.

Never Going to Stop
News flash, teenagers and the young have been sexual since the beginning of our species. It's as hardwired into them as eating, sleeping, and breathing. Sexting as it is called is just another medium for which teens express themselves and while many find it abhorrent, it is only as harmful as people make it. Nobody is putting a gun to these kids' heads and telling them to do this. They're doing it on their own free will. And it's not hurting anybody. It can be embarrassing and get misconstrued, but so can any rumor. I'm not saying kids should do this, but screaming at them that this is evil or something isn't the way to go about it. So long as kids are taught to think before they act they can avoid the consequences, but that doesn't mean they deserved to be condemned as deviants when what they're doing now is far more tame than what other youths have done in the past. Just look at the late 1960s for some real deviance.

Sexting
Hollywood is the main culprit.

Jim,
If no one here is able to convince you of that, there stands a legal system quite willing to assume that burden.
Bob

Child porn
Becky,
ANYONE involved with the distribution of photos or video depicting minor age children in nude, and/or sexually suggestive poses is a CHILD PORNOGRAPHER by definition.
That the perpetrator is also a minor only modifies the penalty, not the crime.
Any way you slice it, it's just a bad idea.
Bob

porn
You will never convince me that a young girl willingly sending a nude photo to a friend is porn.

Permanent Record
Something that *the kids* cannot grasp is that these photos travel the world and they never go away.

Some day Little Jasmine will want to run for President, and when she does, people who think she ought to turn in her shoes and stay home with her children are going to find those photos and splatter them all over her campaign.

Some day Little AntJuan will spend all day preparing for the most important interview of his life, and when he walks into the corner office for his final interview before the hiring decision is made, there on the big screen on the desk will be a blow-up photo of his nekkid, hairy butt.

Or even worse, little Cathy will grow up to regret her past and join a religious order, and as she enters the classroom full of shining faces, the kids are passing semi-nude photos of her at their age from phone to phone.

Sister used to remind us when we were sent to her office that *This will go on your permanent record.* These days more than ever it is true.

Please
Why do elementary and middle school kids have cell phones in the first place? My children (now 18 & 22) got phones when they started driving, because that's when they (arguably, at least) needed them. They also didn't have plans that allowed for the sending of photos until they could pay their own bills because that cost extra.

Parents need to step up and be parents. On the other hand, I don't really see a 16 year old sending a picture of herself to her 17 year old boyfriends as 'child pornography.' Get a grip.

Sexting
Someone look at U.S.C. 2257 and COPA regulations and get a grasp on the theory that nudity, in and of itself, is not pornographic; nor is it sexual.
If there is sexual suggestion or even if it is insinuated then the "children" passing these pictures around should be dealt with for the offenses connected; but should be treated as "children" also.
We've forgotten the theological concept about a child reaching the age of accountability.
We were threatened with jail time if we remember "... spare the rod and spoil the child ..."
They don't go to school the parents are levied with threats and charges, yet the DSS's and court systems, new laws - do not allow a parent to do anything but let them run.
Only choice that today's society has left us, is to talk them to death; ; ; that will NOT work. I have wonderful children. They did not receive spankings beyond 3 each in their lifetimes. I was blessed with a patient, understanding and unrelenting ability to deal with children.
Not every parent possesses such. Let them correct their children, in a civil - yet acceptable manner - and you will be giving them a means to deal with these problems; hopefully before they happen.
(Footnote) My grandmother used a switch and the blood running down my legs and whelps would have landed her in prison for life.
I have never agreed - nor have I used anything similar as a parent. Gifted with a knack to deal with kids, I found other ways. To house-train my dog I used time-outs in the guest bathroom. IT WORKED. What works for one will not work for all.
Teach the children, do not punish them.

One Click of a Button

One click of a button on the internet and porn appears of the kind that I was never exposed until well into adulthood, and then it still took some deliberative efforts. An accidental viewing is certainly possible, say nothing of intentions. Some of my colleagues met a couple 'ladies' in a restaurant that actually sent pictures to their blackberries while they were sitting there, with more arriving later.
So, it isn't just the teens, but certainly this behavior is illustrative of our pathetic and ungrateful society. Willpower and good sense are becoming rare commodities, and the question of how bad it's going to get is left to the parents, faith, and the kids themselves.
Excellent column.

How do children learn?
I believe sex is taught at an earlier age today, and kids see nothing wrong with it.

How many parents hold their little baby on their lap while watching a sexy movie, soap opera or just about any show?
And so called singers, most can't sing worth a damn, but they can look sexy and that seems to be good enough.

It seems to me that kids need to be "un-programed", but how to do that?

Children Are NOT Adults!
This is another reminder that parents and society have utterly failed to realize that children are NOT likely to make responsible sexual choices.

The drive for abstinence-based education is not a hysterical delusion that teenage hormones can be erased, but rather a fight against a culture that refuses to address the moral and ethical issues of teenage sexuality. I'm not one of the most aggressively anti-porn guys out there, but I know better than to saturate the minds of children with a pornographic culture.

I fear "sexting" is the tip of the iceberg.
