Congress' Clueless Credit System

There they go again! The House and Senate have buried us in yet another bailout-stimulus heaping pile of fiscal dung -- a $789 billion loan that has been tacked onto our children's (and children's children's) already staggering $10-plus trillion deficit. Are you just going to sit there and take another one up the tailpipe?

Though President Obama emphatically declared that this 1100-page piece of legislation does not contain "a single pet project, not a single earmark," it's full of some type of financial fluff. Call it what you will, but few knew recessionary needs included $2 billion for battery companies, $2 billion for the National Parks Service, $2.3 billion for NASA and the National Science Foundation, $1.1 billion for airport improvements, $850 million for Amtrak, $800 million for federal prison construction, $300 million for additions to the federal fleet, $200 million for new Department of Agriculture buildings, $165 million for fish hatcheries, $100 million for the FBI, $100 million for shipyards, $50 million for an arts endowment, etc. (A detailed list of the stimulus package expenditures can be reviewed on the website of Patton Boggs legal firm at www.pattonboggs.com.)

Should I just shut up and be grateful that Republicans squashed the $200 million to re-sod the National Mall in Washington and purchase a new Coast Guard polar icebreaker? Sure tastes like the same ol' partisan and political punch to me. (Remember when, in 1988, President Reagan vetoed a bill because it had six earmarks in it?)

And what about you? The average hardworking American citizen? The middle-class blue-collar worker? You'll get a whopping $13 increase to your paycheck. Now there's change (as in coins) we can believe in. And we'll have to believe, because only faith and a miracle will turn that $13 increase into a catalyst to jump-start the economy. Is that the change you were hoping for?

How does one fight an administration and a Congress that believe "only government" is the answer? Is it really true that in the absence of government intervention and doling out another trillion dollars of debt our nation would certainly experience an economic holocaust? Former President G.W. Bush pushed the first trillion-dollar bailout upon America. Nothing happened. Obama now has pushed the second trillion-dollar bailout upon America. Why should we believe there won't be a third, fourth, fifth or sixth so-called government stimulus? What other recourse do they have?

We're in the tank for trillions. And Congress' only solution is to print more money and make more loans. The House is constantly telling the American people to spend, spend, spend, while saying nothing about living within their means. The Senate tries to save every financial institution, rather than allowing the reasonable death of some under a diminishing supply and demand.

Our presidents repeatedly attempt to jump-start the last and highest revolution of the credit merry-go-round by refilling the gas tanks of financial institutions for one more go-round. But why? To lend to those who are already maxed out on monthly payments? Or is it the unemployed who are now supposed to borrow the big bucks? We must quit bailing out what we've borrowed. As George Washington said, "To contract new debts is not the way to pay for old ones."

There are only two things that are going to get us out of this particular financial mess, and only Americans (not "only government") can implement those solutions. Both come down to one word: restraint.

We must restrain our government, and we must restrain ourselves. Feeding the money monster will not reduce its size -- it will perpetuate the problem. We must tame the money monster. We must return it to its cage. We must return to a time when we put a bridle on the spending of government and of our households. We've got to simplify our lives. We've got to learn to be happier with less. We've got to get out of debt.

The late financial guru Larry Burkett prophesied almost 20 years ago in his book "The Coming Economic Earthquake" that an economic calamity was coming upon the U.S. unless a drastic effort was made to curb massive federal spending and the soaring deficit. Burkett was right. And he gave one basic principle to avoid the future market meltdown: "Don't be a slave to debt! Get out of debt!" Burkett is still right today. That is why I devoted the entire economic chapter in my book "Black Belt Patriotism" to how to "Stop America's Nightmare of Debt," both nationally and personally.

In my wife, Gena, and my most recent interview, I explained that if we are going to reawaken America, we have to return to our Founders' principles, which include fiscal prudence. We must follow the advice of those like Thomas Jefferson, who warned long ago, "To preserve (the) independence (of the people), we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt." (Now read that again, then one more time.)

How do we do that? We cap our spending and allow the supply-and-demand levels to lower to points commensurate with our incomes (not credit lines). We must learn to downsize and live within our means, and not borrow excessive amounts, even for investment debt like a home or business. We must cut spending, reduce our budgets, pay down our debts, and stabilize our homes and nation.

As for that clueless Congress, we must demand our representatives seek a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution, which will keep the government living within its means. We must return to a pay-as-you-go government and nation. It's our last resort for an out-of-control economy. Thomas Jefferson once said, "The maxim of buying nothing but what we had money in our pockets to pay for (is) a maxim which, of all others, lays the broadest foundation for happiness."

If our country is to survive, we must elect only those who show proof of fiscal discipline, refuse under all circumstances to increase our national deficit, and commit to pass and live under a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget. And if our incumbents voted for the bailouts or bail on their fiscal frugality, then vote them out of office the next chance you get.

This is certainly not George Washington's America. Each party that takes power seems to want to outspend their predecessors and the Democrats are off to a fast start. And there is noone to stop them. More people than ever now expect the governemnt to help them in various ways and to save them from having to face the tough tasks that life presents. Those of us who know better and refuse to take handouts are dwindling in number. We will be fine as we will hunker down and do our own work for ourselves and our families. But there are now enough people who expect and look forward to Daddy Government doing their dirty work for them and relishing the next handout. In fact there are now enough that support gov't handouts that it may be too late to turn the country back to one of rugged individualism where most themselves wanted to take on the everyday challenges life brings.

Last night my wife showed me an article on AmericanThinker.com that she found very enlightening. It was "How Democracies Become Tyrannies" by Ed Kaitz.

Good diagnosis, wrong medicine

I'm afraid it will not.

Imagine that a balanced-budget amendment were to pass. Is it imaginable that it would contain NO escape clause for "war or national emergency?" And is it imaginable that Congress would refuse ITSELF the privilege of defining what constitutes a national emergency?

There is only one way out of this morass, and it doesn't involve elections, highly unlikely Constitutional amendments, or nattering on the Internet. The people of the United States must return to their original role as the defenders of their own rights and freedoms. That could mean passive noncompliance with federal edicts; the formation of alternative economies that use hard money rather than federal fiat currency; local militias dedicated to the defense of their communities and the businesses in them against intrusion by federal forces; and more proactive measures intended to impose Vince Flynn's conception of a "hard term limit" on legislators, executives, and judges who presume to rewrite the Constitution to suit their own purposes.

Never imagine that career politicians can't weasel their way around a barrier made of mere words.

just once before i leave this earth i want to see an organized march to Washington, telling those B&^t#$ds: to S-T-O-P this crap --because we are sick and tired of you SLUGS buying votes using OUR money.

Interesting, using TJ as a guide. While there was much to admire in his life, philosophy, and writings, citing Jefferson on fiscal restraint is like citing Clinton on self-control. The only reason the bankers didn't turn him out of Monticello was the he was Jefferson!

Is there an independent conservative
or uninformed voter who will admit to voting for any of these dims? I don't blame you for keeping quiet because you signed our death warrant. Even if you bought Oblaba's con at least you should have had enough sense to know to vote Republican on everthing else to check his power.

Thanks for being willing to confront the truth. It's not about economy, Republican, Democrat, "last eight years," "deficit left at White House door," corporate vs. mainstreet, blah, blah, blah, etc. It's about them and us spending too much! We're living way beyond our means in this country, and greed is perpetuating the whole thing. Thanks for being honest enough to repeat Jefferson's words, which are words we should all create into a poster and put in every house and every congressional hall.

TIME magazine agrees
Chuck is right and Time magazine agrees in the "Top 25" to blame for our financial crisis. Most of them pivot around Clinton administration (Clinton #13) and his cabinet financial moves to lend and spend. Consumers also to blame for taking the carrot. Constitutional Amendment? God Forbid!!!
Would you feel comfortable with this present pre tyranical form of governance calling a Constitutional Convention and "Changing/ adding to it"? Havent you seen enough of their trickery, hidden adjenda type of manipulation just in the "Stimulus" to worry you as to what they might "change" for their own attempt at a final power grab? Other than that I agree that we must first personally get our priorities straight concerning our individual fiscal house. Second we must melt the lines to demand the same from our elected represenitives,(Maybe they are more representitive of us than we would care to admit; financially that is). Let us control our own wastefull spending first; nesscessity only. I doubt that they will listen though, they have what they want; dominance of position and its power to do whatever they want. So finally, we must financally prove to them we are serious; grow our own gardens,quit using credit and ATM cards, Cash only; Barter services, and co-op food supplies with the neighbors. Finally, if our actions need to be a little louder, boycot sales taxes one day, pay only sticker price, give money for such without paying the additional sales tax; then just walk out; (Will only work if enough people have the B--ls guts enough to acctually do it). They cant arrest us all, what a nation wide protest that would be, so we could finally get OUR POINT across. Ponder the possibilities, then act, if you dare. Tyranny only works if people let it, while there is still time to stop it.

King Fed
Americans, take back your freedom! Tell King Fed he is out of line and demand all domestic Fed functions be returned to the states and the Feds take care of national security. No more income tax. The states will collect sales tax and be responsible for budgeting the revenues.
The states need to assert their position and tell the Fed where to put it. States recall your representives and stop collecting taxs for the King Fed.

Power to the People
Remember people of this nation, our Federal Government is only as powerful as We The People allow them to be. If we begin in unison to ignore the laws that they create to restrain us, then their laws are usless. If we the people revolt together as a single entity, we would overpower them, and remove their restraints on us. But to do this we must act as a single entity, anything less would be useless. If we were to take on our government they would call out the military, but our military is first and foremost ablidged to the people and our Constitution and not our government. Revolutionists are only strong if the people are committed to freedom, and fear can't become a factor. Yes we must demand a better government but the first step is removing the present incumbents that refuse to be financially responsible. If the people voted as a single unit no matter what their political affiliation was, then we would have a good chance of winning. People of this nation need to forget party lines and vote only financially responsible politicians. People of this nation need to research the voting history of each politician in their district, and find out which incumbent voted for the bailouts,and the stimulus package, then vote them out of office, irreguardless of your political affiliation.

I saw that pic of Pelosi and I'd like to add a fist print on her face. I still don't get why they actually believe this will work. Other countries have tried bailouts, extended their recession, and hurt their currency. This spending spree is the largest in our history. Obama really is a pure partisan idiot. Obama, you are a true failure.

Demand representatives?
We can demand all we want. These egotistical power hungry representatives do whatever they want (in your face). And as far as dumping our unqualified leaders, time and time again uninformed voters (the majority?) just keep re-electing the same incompetence. Term lomits would help. Think our reps would vote term limits???

CLUELESS CONGRESS
HISTORY IS ALL WRONG. The three liberals have all the right angles. There is a reason the stimulus package have never succeeded anywhere on the face of the earth, the three liberals have it figured out. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi will turn around every wayward economy in the world. It was all the Bush administration fault, but the Republicans in Congress kept voting no especially those non-believers in the House. They defeated Bush stimulus package twice and then Pelosi suspended rules and the senate actually passed the package first violating Congressional laws. Cornyn and his neocons in the senate voted for the first stimulus package.

Debt
The percentage of debt among average Americans and the Federal Government is so high that the collapse of the American dream as we have known it is upon us! Bush and Obama adding a Trillion each and now Obama planning another 2 1/2 Trillions will destroy the dollar , cause Staginflation and a collapse in bond prices. Americans need to save as the government needs to eliminate and cut back programs that don't enhance the creation of productive jobs. The simple fact is that the rest of the world is also in trouble and won't be buying our debt anymore as they need to finance their own debt.

Credit and Payment
I made the mistake of using credit cards about twenty five years ago. I am just now getting them finally paid off. I have a dislike to even buy a couple of hundred dollars worth of items on credit now. But I get dozens of offers, all of which want credit cards as payment. One even expressed disbelief about me refusing the pay with one, almost expressing his disbelief that I was an American. Too many people still believe it is okay. That is our trouble and our country's trouble.

One of our
"good" Senators(Evan Bayh) was on local news at noon today and said of the Stimulate the vote bill, "i think there is to much spending and not enough tax cuts....NO SH%T!!!

I must have missed his screaming and hollerin during his protest.

NEW SPENDING BULL
I just recently lost my house, iam 68 years old and i owed 76,000 on a house valued at 129,000 by a bank appraiser, you might think,no problem, but i had recently lost my job because of the economy and was forced to live on my social security which is 1,018 dollars a month and my morgage was 800 dollars a month and with a car payment added, no way. The Housing Industry in my area is in the dumper because the auto plants are closing. I am trying to sell on a short sale with the best offer being 40,000, 36,000 less than i owe. I cant find a job because of my age. The mortgage company has offered to tack the payments i am behind to the end of the mortgage which i tryed to explain was really no help but they couldnt understand why i didnt accept their generous offer. The stimulus bull as i understand it will be 250 dollars as a one time bonus on my social security check (whoopie), for this stimulus my grandkids will be paying for the rest of their lives. The reason for all the panic on getting this bull through congress is so no one will know or understand what they are voting on if they get the chance to read this bull no one would vote for it but Harry Reed and Nancy Pelousy, the two biggest crooks and creeps in congress they both should be put in jail on bread and water untill they die.

kids won't pay for it
Does any one think that our kids are going to live the rest of their lives working their butts off to pay down this debt. Don't you think they'll resent us for this mess. It's not their burden to bear. Our forefathers came here for a better future and our kids will leave for one.

I didn't vote for Bush either in 2000, or in 2004, however I didn't consider either Al Gore or John Kerry fiscally responsible so I didn't vote for them either.

That being the case, the Democrat's pork bill we laughingly refer to as "stimulus" is completely irresponsible. I didn't support Bush's spending, but that's no reason to fall in line with Obama's either. Perhaps we should consider that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have a good track record here.

My rule: Just because you don't like one party doesn't mean that you should automatically support the other one.

You hit the nail on the head. We need to quit voting party line. A couple years back one of my Senators was up for re-election, he hadn't bothered to answer any of my correspondence and any of his votes were always against what I was for, so I ignored all of his requests for support and refused to vote for him. I guess enough others felt the same way because he is no longer in office.
Then you have those like Tom from NY who do nothing but beat the same dead horse about Bush, Cheney, Haliburton ad nauseum. They never bother to check all of the "no bid" contracts that were given to Haliburton or other large companies through the Clinton and other administrations. Never mind that these large companies have the infrastructure to act immediately to address a need.
And you notice how they like to howl about the profits the oil companies make but never hear a peep about the outrageous sums of money paid to actors or sports figures. If your going to limit profits of a company, lets put a pay cap on how much an actor/musician, sports figure, media personality or CEO can make. No more multimillion dollar per year salaries. I'm sure they would appreciate it if they came up with a new product that was something that everyone wanted and needed, but were limited on how much profit they could make on its sale.

It is sad to see what we have become,we have let this happen,for the majority never stood up,as we needed to realize,now,WE ALL..PAY A PRICE.WE ARE IN..A SINKING SHIP,AND SOME OF US THAT HAVE ANSWERS-OUR KNOWLEDGE MIGHT NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY.Myself and 'Einstein' have been told by 'big boys'/(a big energy company)-"they would keep us from getting anywhere with our knowledge"..HOW SAD THIS IS...FOR THEY HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL-THUS FAR.I KEEP TRYING..I am a South Carolina girl,my family are yet,farmers,but probably not much longer-UNLESS..I CAN FIND-SOMONE TO LISTEN-AND TAKE A STAND WITH US.With the knowledge that Einstein and I have,such that would be able to -HELP- as did the 'fish and barley cakes'.After all,the Lord gave to us,Einstein and myself,the gift of such knowledge that would help so many people,and we need such help;times are SO DESPARATE!ENERGY ANSWERS...WE HAVE QUITE A FEW.
