Lincoln's View of Obama's Inauguration

With the 20-foot statue of Abraham Lincoln gazing from the Lincoln Memorial across the National Mall, I wondered, what would the Civil War president think about Barack Obama being sworn in as America's 44th president? Lincoln is obviously Obama's favorite president. But would America's 16th president return the same sentiment?

There's no doubt these two presidents from Illinois share some similarities. As Australia's Herald Sun noted, "Both were derided as too young and inexperienced to be President; both wrote best-selling books before running for the White House; both were lawyers and extraordinarily gifted orators; both came to power during a national crisis; and both were tall, lanky, self-made men determined to maintain contact with the citizens they served."

But some retort by saying every president since the 16th president has felt some sense of his legacy. Lincoln scholar and historian Harold Holzer, who has written 31 books on the Great Emancipator, said: "They all feel it. Everyone finds something in him." And, I would add, everyone finds their contrasts, too. "I think it is time to claim Lincoln as one of our own," Franklin Roosevelt said in the spring of 1929. "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln," Gerald Ford once said. Obama even recently confessed, "There's a genius to Lincoln that is not going to be matched."

Obama and Lincoln, however, do share one gigantic thing in common above all others: a rare and historic symmetry. One served as a catalyst to end slavery, and the other demonstrates just how far that freedom has advanced in almost 150 years. There cannot be enough said about the historical magnitude of this presidential moment -- a true fulfillment of the American experiment, spirit and dream (an achievement embedded long ago in the equality clauses of the Declaration of Independence).

In the end, our 16th and 44th presidents have not only some positives but also some negatives in common. The latter includes:

--They both believe imposing more taxes is the way to economic recovery. (Lincoln was dependent upon Southern taxes and initiated the first income taxes, which eventually would become law, in 1913, through our 16th Amendment.)

--They both believe in regarding the Constitution as a living document (allowing them more flexibility and power for preferred political decisions and presidential autonomy).

--They both believe in big government solutions. Lincoln once said, "The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all or cannot so well do for themselves, in their separate and individual capacities."

So where do these similarities and contrasts leave us in considering what Lincoln's view of Obama's inauguration might have been? About this we can be absolutely certain: Lincoln and his contemporaries couldn't even have imagined a day when America would elect a black man as president. Such an elevated position was simply out of sight from the social paradigm of their time.

Case in point: On the one hand, in August 1858, Abraham Lincoln affirmed the equality in humanity of blacks: "I have never said anything to the contrary, but I hold that notwithstanding all this, there is no reason in the world why the Negro is not entitled to all the natural rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I hold that he is as much entitled to these as the white man. I agree with Judge Douglas; he is not my equal in many respects -- certainly not in color, perhaps not in moral or intellectual endowment. But in the right to eat the bread, without leave of anybody else, which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas and the equal of every living man."

On the other hand, just one month later, Lincoln questioned blacks' social and political equality: "I will say then that I am not nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races -- that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes nor of qualifying them to hold office nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races, which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together, there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the Negro should be denied everything."

Of course, as some propose, Lincoln could have had a change of heart over the next seven years, after experiencing the Civil War and his presidency. Others say, however, that the Emancipation Proclamation was merely a wartime measure and political document with no personal reflection.

No matter what the final verdict of Lincoln's degree of prejudicial blood, blacks were freed. And 144 years later, Obama is president. And those bookends in social history happened despite the fact that Abraham Lincoln, like many of us, retained some biases and still had room to grow.

What's most important now is not how Obama's and Lincoln's lives connect but how all of ours do. Any way you look at it, triumph or travesty, Obama's presidency is a colossal and culminating event according to any historical criteria. And all Americans would do well momentarily to drop our partisan politics and rigor and follow the advice given by Lincoln in his second inaugural address, which also is etched on his memorial:

"With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

If Lincoln can be forgiven his racism...
...then we should be forgiven our Obamamaia. We always project onto our leaders what we hope for the future.

Obama is seen as our first black president even though he's not really black since he's half black and half white. As Andrew Young recently put it, "he has the label without the scars."

So, he is what we think he is and what we expect him to be...until or unless he fails to live up to that whatever it may be. Millions attending his inauguration expect him to succeed. Many on this blog expect him to fail. Either way, he will preside over events to come and perhaps influence them to some degree.

I predict he will leave office in eight years with about a 50% approval rating, or at least a little bit higher than Bush.

Obama is no Lincoln. Lincoln was honest(that's how he got the nickname,"Honest Abe") and Obama is both dishonest and phony.

The Obama Media is also dishonest, and they will pay the price along with the rest of us.

16th Amendment
Chuck, Fact check...--They both believe imposing more taxes is the way to economic recovery. Supreme Court stated that the 16th did not give any new powers to tax!!!

LD35-IN, Chuck isn't calling Obama a Lincoln. Did you not read the last quote from Lincoln and Chuck's word that Lincoln was prejudice??

Everyone has a prejudice "streak", but some control over that can be exercised the way we sometimes hide discrimination against things we don't like.

Lincoln didn't say one thing to one group and say something different to another group.

I applaud your effort to come across fair and balanced. You acknowledged some similarities and particularly symmetry between Lincoln and Obama, but clearly showed with 3 negatives that commonality between the two was not always good (big taxes, big government solution). In particular, I never knew about the 1958 quote from his run for election (see reference per RickyLS comments). WOW! I doubt very much that Lincoln would have endorsed Obama's election. Consider again Lincoln's words, "I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes nor of qualifying them to hold office..."

years after the RevolutionaryWar in 186239 as the Bureau of Internal40 Revenue. Its creation coincided with the creation of the income tax, which it was designed to collect. Both were the work of President Lincoln and Congress, which saw them as necessary to pay for Civil War expenses.41 It is interesting to note, however,
that the income tax law was revoked ten years later, revived in 1894, and then ruled by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional in 1895. Yet in 1913 it became law through the Sixteenth Amendment. Marxism
There is a connection between Lincoln and Obama: Marxism. Lincoln may not have been a proponent of Karl Marx himself, but many of his political allies in forming the new Republican Party were refugees from the failed European Marxist Revolutions of 1848 in Europe. They were radical Marxists, and became prominent in the Republican Party. Many served as General Officers in the Union Army. The Republican Party of that era was bent on centralizing power in the national government, taking power away from the States who originally formed the Federal Republic. The War Between the States accomplished that end.

Lincoln and his new GOP introduced Marxism to this country. Obama may oversee the accendancy and final takeover of socialism/Marxism.

Self Made Man?
Obama? How so? I don't think he has ever worked a private sector job -- perhaps as a junior lawyer for a year. What a joke. But a good piece overall.

Chuck Should do a Fact Check
Ricky LS - while generally correct, Chuck missed one biggie. According to your quote, he wrote: "We must remember the Democratic Party was once the southern pro-slavery party. It would be decades later before Democrats became the party of racial equality, fighting for civil rights."

I realize Chuck isn't as old as I, but he is old enough to remember the politics of the 70s (though he may not have been paying attention). Decades? How about more than a century? The Civil Rights Act of 1974 was passed, not by Democrats voting "Aye", but by Republicans voting "Aye" and many Democrats voting "Nay". If the bill had to depend primarily on Democrat votes, it would not have passed at all. I will allow that the Democrats of the 1970s, unlike the Democrats of the late 1860s, did not favor a return of slavery. Hardly a party "fighting for racial equality and civil rights".

I hope Obama isn't as destructive to
America as the worst POTUS of all time (Lincoln) was.

Chuck's point (and RickyLS) wasn't to defend Democrats' civil rights record, but to say those who tritely oppose Obama/Lincoln similarities with "Lincoln was Republican and Obama is a Democrat" rationale, do so on a superficial level, since Republicans were the party of racial change back then, not Democrats. Chuck is a staunch Independent now(with Republican leanings), but would not defend Democrats--so you have nothing to fear.

TRUE GREATNESS IMITATES NO ONE
Authentically great men have no need for the symbols, imagery, style and legacies of other great men.True greatness is original, innovative, genuine and real and needs no models to imitate. Who did Lincoln imitate in his presidential campaign, or in the period leading up to his inauguration? Whose Bible did he use to swear him in as President? Who did the Roosevelts imitate and ape? Who was Kennedy's model? Who did Reagan emulate? Answer: No one. These men were among the great ones of history and walked in no one's shoes. Even George Bush as he rose to power drew strength from his principles, convictions and ideals, not from any of his predecessors (save some good advice from his dad). But not Barack Obama. Never in the history of presidential politics, never in a campaign or in the pre-inaugural stage, has a candidate or President-elect leaned so heavily on the great men of the past. Why has Obama been doing this? Is it simply out of reverence for these men? Is he paying homage to them? Is that the reason? Or is it because he's just a conventional politician with no exceptional qualities? A mediocre man with no real greatness in him who wants to seem great?

Could it be that Obama suffers from an inferiority complex much like his wife? That like Michelle he has a poor self-image which he tries to overcome by echoing the great Presidents of the past, and especially the greatest of them all, Abraham Lincoln? I believe that's the truth. From the start of his campaign in Springfield Illinois, Lincoln's hometown, to his swearing in on Lincoln's Bible. From his gigantic rally in West Berlin where JFK gave his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech to is acceptenace speech at Denver the anniversary of Dr. King's I Have a Dream Speech Obama uses these men and their legacies to sustain the charade and show of greatness as the substance and reality are lacking in him.

Now as far as deeds go, what the **** has Obama ever done?

This man has taken advantage of what other men have done is all he has ever done.
He has never built a single thing, he has never led a single person anywhere but into the same old tripe and rotgut politics of the twisted democrat party.

Christians need to pray for our new leader:

If he were there he would be distressed beyond composure; he would probably upchuck a pool of vomit in disgust. Lincoln was a humble man with a vision grounded by the Fore Fathers' precepts. B.O. is a ridiculous, self-promoting pretender to greatness and our country will come to regret electing him even with all the smoke and mirrors, MSM bias, and a huge supporting bureaucracy.

Wake up
Conservatisim does not lie -- show us one country that is socialist / communist that works? Who can argue that America, with all of her imperfections, is the greatest nation the world has ever seen. All you liberals who think you want what BHO is selling are going to be sorry when the 'government' is dictating to you how to spend you money, what kind of car you can drive, 'free' -wait in line- healthcare. Racial Equality is not a threat
The real threat is the emergence of a failed philosophical theory without moral foundation that has historically been the antithesis of the American heritage given to us by our forefathers. I thought Americans treasured their freedoms and would never so willingly surrender them to the powers of evil.

Now I get it
This is what Obama was referring to when he cited bitter clingers in SF.

Face it folks, with even the Fox News poll showing a 76% favorable rating for Obama, you folks are now officially on the fringe of American sentiment.

But who knows, perhaps if your party begins to focus less on Obama, and more on putting your own house in order you won't see your new voter registration numbers decline by 1 million votes as it did between the last two elections.

Let's talk equal
How about in the 1960's in a bar in Kansas, a black man was allowed in and a native American was told to leave. Yes, slavery was and is wrong, but while we strive to celebrate the equality of blacks to whites let us not forget there are other races in America who are not treated as equals. Hispanic, Native Americans, Orientals, and those who are persecuted for their religion, economics, political,or linguistic deferences.
We are all subject to our own vices and prejudices.Thank God we can also be subject to our own virtues and tolerances. I will pray for President Obama because I pray for all our presidents, not because of my race, his race, my political party, his political party or any other reason than the Bible says we should be respectful and pray for those in power. It also says that those who are in power are in power because God has placed them there.
Now let's get back to making America Great! That includes respecting one another no matter our differences.

Lincoln wanted America's best
Everything Lincoln done was in the best interest of the United States of America. Abortion is not in the best interest of the country, niether is black genocide, nor infantcide, nor non of the stimulus projects being sought by President Obama. Outside of being lawyers from the same state they have very little incommon. Lincoln purpose was unity not division. The first black senators were Republicans, prior to the original Jim Crow Democrats. Obama team revived the Jim Crow democrats only to include a diverse agenda of hatred attacking the teachings of Jesus Christ. Obama team have outlined the players of the new Jim Crow Democrats: minorities, the gay coalition, illegal aliens, illegal prescription drug users, union members, law enforcement agents, and elected public officials of both political parties.

BHO not black?

Let me BEG to differ... he looks black, therefore he likely suffered just as much from prejudice as any other black man - and I say that as someone who did not vote for him and holds no particular affection for him other than the same I held for Bush, Clinton, etc as our POTUS and CIC.

I guarantee you any racist groups out there see him as fully black... I can also guarantee you that what passes for prejudice done to a black man today, in other words what you would hear them complain about, would have been seen by blacks of the 1800s and before as tender loving care compared to what THEY had to live through. The activists back then would look at today and go "Mission Accomplished" were they to witness BHO's inauguration... and they would be correct.

On Obama's self definition as black
I was very amused this morning when I went to Horowitz's column on how conservatives 'should' react to the inaugural.

What tickled me what the juxtaposition of poster screming bloody murder that Horowitz or anyone should tell them how to feel or act regarding the inaugural, several posts making the argument you see here about Obama being black.

Think about it.

History will see BO as the first black President and a failure. Regardless how much the brainless left loonies love him.

Wrong President to look to
President Obama is trying to claim association with President Lincoln (#16). Based on a recent History Channel story of the Presidents, it seems that President van Buren (#8) would be more appropriate. He had a financial crisis left to him by the previous President; he didn't know what to do about it; and he did not like to make decisions.

With all due respect, I'm not at all sure U "get it"..I don't pay much attention to or participate in Polls, Fox News, Power Point or anybody else..That's primarily because polls tend to elicit whatever position they look for..I suspect the Favorable position U cite may
have been phrased as a desire to succeed, but maybe not.. I say that because although I generally view our new President as having been a lot less than forthright on various subjects, I have and do wish him AND the US well..CHEERS
